What a weekend for the Metro Volleyball Club out of Washington D.C. Playing in their hometown tournament, the Capitol Hill Classic, Metro teams won the 18 Open, 17 Open, 16 Open, and 14 Open divisions and finished second in 13 Open and third in 15 Open.

Metro VBC 18 Travel , the top-ranked team in 18 Open, claimed the tournament title, despite an unexpected loss to Sureshots 18N on Day 2. That 27-25, 27-25 loss turned out to be the only blemish on 18 Travel’s record over President’s Day weekend. The squad capped its Capitol Hill Classic performance with a three-set victory over VA Elite 18s (25-20, 21-25, 15-11) in the 18 Open finale. 

Metro 18 Travel libero Milan Gomillion, a Maryland recruit, earned MVP of the division, while her teammates Olivia Womble and Sydney Reed were named Best Attacker and Best Server, respectively. 

Renaissance 18-1 and Revolution PGH 18 White lost in the semifinals to take third-place finishes. 

Metro 17 Travel went undefeated, not even dropping a single set, on its way to the 17 Open crown. Rachel Richardson, a 5-9 outside hitter and the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year for the District of Columbia, claimed MVP honors, while Michelle Bennett earned the title of Best Passer. The D.C.-based squad faced Canadian team Defensa 17 Purple in the final.

Samiha Foster led Metro 16 Travel to victory in 16 Open and was awarded MVP for her efforts. Her teammates Julia Gladhill (Best Passer) and Laila Ivey (Best Attacker) played big roles in helping 16 Travel go undefeated across three days of competition and take down Puerto Rican team Borinquen Coqui 16-1 for first place.

In 15 Open, top-seeded Metro 15 Travel lost to eventual champion Elite Volleyball Training Center (EVTC) 15 Black in the semis. Paramount VBC 15-1 defeated Beach Elite 15 Adidas Black to earn its spot in the final, but EVTC 15 Black claimed the crown 25-16, 25-17. EVTC went undefeated on the weekend.

Another Metro victory in 14 Open — 14 Travel went 10-0, 20-2 in sets, to win the division, defeating ECJVC 14 National in a close three-set final (21-25, 25-22, 15-11). Emerson Sellman was named MVP, while her Metro teammate Lilah Stevens claimed the Best Attacker award.

NYC Juniors 13 National won the 13 Open Division, handing Metro 13 Travel its first loss of the tournament in the final (25-20, 25-21).

Division i women's lacrosse committee announces 2024 championship field.

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Committee has selected the 29 teams to compete in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship.

Northwestern was selected as the overall No. 1 seed after finishing 15-2 and winning their fourth Big Ten title in program history.

Atlantic Coast Conference champion Boston College earned the No. 2 seed in the field, while Syracuse enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed with a 14-5 record. Maryland rounds out the top four seeds with their Division I-leading 39th tournament appearance.

The tournament begins with first-round games May 10. Eight sites will host first- and second-round competition Friday, May 10, and Sunday, May 12; four quarterfinal games will be played Thursday, May 6. First- and second-round games will be played on the campuses of the competing institutions and will be shown live on ESPN+. The quarterfinals will be shown live on ESPNU.

The winner of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the national semifinals hosted by University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. 

The semifinal games will be shown live on ESPNU at 3 and 5:30 p.m. Eastern time Friday, May 24.  The championship game will air live on ESPN Sunday, May 26 at noon. Tickets for the semifinals and national championship game can be purchased online at  www.ncaa.com/tickets . 

Fifteen conferences, including the American Athletic Conference, America East Conference, Atlantic 10 Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference, ASUN Conference, Big East Conference, Big South Conference, Big Ten Conference, Coastal Athletic Association, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Mid-American Conference, Northeast Conference, Pac-12 Conference, Patriot League and Southern Conference, had conference champions awarded automatic qualification for the 2024 championship. The ACC leads the field with six teams followed by the Big Ten with five.

The remaining 14 teams were selected on an at-large basis. A complete bracket with teams, dates and sites is available at  NCAA.com .

Four teams will be making their NCAA tournament debut in Binghamton, Coastal Carolina, LIU and Niagara. Maryland leads the field with 39 appearances while Yale is making their first appearance since 2007.  The 2024 field includes 20 teams that competed in the 2023 tournament.  The field also comprises of eight teams that have combined for 35 national titles led by Maryland with 14 and Northwestern with eight.

In the 2023 championship, Northwestern defeated Boston College 18-6 at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, to win its eighth women’s lacrosse national championship.
