Lake Skadar Adventure Tours

Undiscovered Montenegro – Lake Skadar Adventure Tours

Notice – full day tours program no longer available.

Dear Everyone – although our day tours gathered hundreds of five-star reviews since we started offering them at lake Skadar in 2012, high demand for our hosted holidays via Undiscovered Montenegro has meant we that these packages have now become the focus of our business. In summer 2022/2023 every single one of our responsible, sustainable multi-activity adventures in Montenegro sold out, so we began to offer similar packages in our neighbouring countries as well!

lake skadar tour

As our wonderful team of guides is fully committed to delivering these adventure holidays – we also have packages in Croatia and Kosovo – we have found we simply don’t have the resources to also commit to a full program of day tours at Lake Skadar as we did in the past.

Outside of peak season, we can occasionally allow shorter stays at our activity base, Villa Miela Lake Retreat, which now has seven rooms available. If you’d like to experience a taste of Lake Skadar, 3-4 night/2 activity stays are sometimes possible from £295pp. Please visit our holiday pages for details, and get in touch if this is of interest – but please note that pure day tours are sadly no longer on offer.

Skadar Lake National park- through the seasons

During this excursion, we will visit the Visitor Center on Lake Skadar , where the contents of all five national parks of Montenegro, which make up about 10% of the territory of the smallest country in the Balkans, are presented in an authentic way. National parks are areas of special beauty, significant and rare natural phenomena.

The differences and contrasts of protected areas of Montenegro will satisfy different tastes – Lovćen massif descends to the sea shore, across the swampy shores of Skadar Lake, north we reach the rainforest of Biogradska Gora, Durmitor lakes and deep canyons, all the way to the heights of Prokletije.

Lake Skadar National Park has been protected as a Ramsar site since December 25, 1995, when it was inscribed on the Wetland List of International Importance, especially as waterfowl habitat.

Greetings =) 1)My question is, if u can walk/hike a bit through the national park or overall area at the lake. 2)There also kayaks/paddle boards offered there. Is it possible to take a ride?

Or are you generell bound?

Irja

Me and my friend went to this tour today and it was very nice! We had a long tour on the boat including snacks and wine and afterwards, time to swim in the lake and some local food directly at the lake. Very nice guide! I can totally recommend 🙂

AVE Tours team

Thanks for the comment. Lake Skadar is a National Park that enchants both tourists and the AVE Tours team with its beauty and facilities, so every trip there is a great pleasure. 🙂

Tanja Muzik

Thank you AVE Tours for an unforgettable day discovering so much more than Lake Skadar. Emil our guide was great, knowlegeable, with a great sense of humour. He picked us up near our hotel and we were lucky to be the only 2 guests in the tour, so we had him as a private guide and learnt so much from him about the politics, economy, history and geography of Montenegro. The boat trip was very pleasant and we received some local specialities on board to eat. Sadly we did not see any pelicans, as this depends on the time of the day, so Emil told us. The fish lunch was an experience – a whole fish grilled in a salt crust, it was delicious! Everywhere people knew Emil so we got to meet locals at every stop. I can recommend this tour which was well organised.

Dear Tanja,

Thank you very much for your positive feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed the beauty of the Skadar Lake National Park and that you had a great time with Emil. We hope to see you again on a new trip.

Ryan Ramey

We enjoyed our Skadar Lake tour! The tour started with a journey through the museum where we had a wonderful guide who explained all the National Parks of Montenegro–it was very informative! Next, we boarded a boat and spent a couple of hours cruising around the lake seeing the beautiful birds and plants. Duško and Ivana told us if we were lucky we might see Pelicans. And we were lucky! We saw many Pelicans and were able to watch them swim and fly. Beautiful! After that we went to a restaurant and beach only accessible by boat where we relaxed, swam, and were able to eat the wonderful fish meal prepared there.

Thank you AVE Tours for a wonderful trip!

Dear Mr. Ramey, we try to organize a holiday for our guests that will be remembered for the best impressions🍀 for that AVE tours agency has been working for 14 years … we think about every detail.

Tetiana and Mykhaylo

We would like to thank the organizers of the tour, everything went great. We liked everything, We had a great day at the lakes. Special thanks to our transfers and escorted guide Duško, he is a wonderful person.

AVE Tours Team

Dear Tetiana and Mykhaylo,

Thank you on behalf of the organizers and Dusko’s name. We are expecting you again in Montenegro and we are ready to show you many more beautiful places.

Anna

Thank you for the great day with wonderful views of Skadar lake! Perfect organisation, everything was like in the schedule!

Dear Anna, Thank you for being our guests. We try to discover and present the beauties of Montenegro and the gastronomic offer to tourists.

Anna

I was picked up at the place agreed in right time. We visited the interesting visitor center at Skadar lake and after that we had a wonderful boat tour. There was much more to see and experience than I had ever tought there would be and we even saw pelicans! During the tour we had delicious priganice with honey and cheese, wine and juice. After the tour we went to a restaurant by the lake where we could swim, relax or have some wine or beer before the really delicious fishmeal. The tour was overall great and the driver/guide was really nice and cared about everybody in the group. A wonderful day to remember 😊

Dear Anna, Thank you for the kind words. We are glad you enjoyed it. A cruise on Lake Skadar is a place where you can really relax and enjoy the beautiful nature of the National Park. We hope to see you on a new trip.

In recent years, the allure of Albania and Montenegro as tourist destinations has surged , with these Balkan nations emerging from the shadows of their more frequented European neighbours.

Albania, with its untouched landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, offers an authentic slice of Mediterranean life, from the sun-drenched beaches of the Albanian Riviera to the historical enclaves of Berat and Gjirokastër. Montenegro, meanwhile, boasts the cinematic splendour of the Bay of Kotor and the wild beauty of Durmitor National Park , captivating those in search of both medieval charm and outdoor adventure.

This rising popularity is fuelled by the countries’ relatively undiscovered status, providing a haven for travellers seeking destinations unspoiled by mass tourism. As word of their stunning scenery, hospitable locals, and affordability spreads, Albania and Montenegro are fast becoming the darlings of the new European travel scene, offering a fresh and exciting experience for the intrepid explorer.

Nestled between the verdant landscapes of Montenegro and Albania , Lake Skadar remains one of the most enchanting yet under-the-radar destinations in Europe. As the largest lake in Southern Europe and a national park, it is a haven for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and those seeking tranquillity away from the bustling tourist spots. If you’re planning a visit to this Balkan gem, our comprehensive guide will ensure you make the most of your trip to Lake Skadar.

Lake Skadar is accessible from various points in Montenegro and Albania, but the most common route is from the Montenegrin capital, Podgorica. The lake is a mere 30-minute drive from the city, making it an easy day trip. Car hire is widely available and offers the most flexibility for exploring the lake’s many hidden corners. Alternatively, regular buses run from Podgorica to the lakeside town of Virpazar, which is the primary gateway to the national park.

For those coming from Albania, the town of Shkodër serves as a convenient base, with organised tours and public transport options available to reach the lake.

The lake’s shores are dotted with historical treasures, from the remains of ancient Illyrian fortresses to Ottoman-era villages. Lake Skadar, Montenegro: The Perfect Day Trip (2024)

Last Updated on March 13, 2024 by Nicole

Montenegro is a tiny European country found in central Europe. It is a country that is jammed pack with coastline, rivers, lakes and mountains. Most Europeans go in the summer to sit on the beach and enjoy its natural beauty and delicious fresh food. This is certainly as good a reason as any to visit Montenegro. However, when myself, husband and two daughters (21 and 13 years old) were there, we couldn’t sit still. We spent 4 days exploring as much of Montenegro as we could. This included a spectacular day trip from Kotor to Lake Skadar National Park. The sights we saw and the experiences we had were well worth giving up a day lounging by the Adriatic Sea.

Other Articles About Our Experiences In Montenegro

We spent four days heading north, south, east and west of Kotor, where our hotel was located, fully enthralled by the stunning beauty, architecture and history of this country.

Our home base for our 4 day stay was Kotor found on the Bay of Kotor in the Adriatic Sea. It is an ancient town that was first mentioned in 168 BC.

Kotor was originally settled by the Ancient Romans and was fortified in 535 AD. However, from 1420 to 1797, Kotor was under Venetian control and transformed into how it looks today.

The architecture is distinctly Venetian and it’s one of the most well-preserved medieval old towns on the Adriatic. In addition, it is a World Unesco site.

Kotor old town

We stayed at the Hotel Vardar in Kotor Old Town. We loved spending our nights exploring the winding cobblestone paths, eating at many wonderful restaurants, and of course, people watching while sipping cocktails on outdoor patios.

Moreover, it was a great location for our other day trips – going to Lake Skadar, exploring the Bay of Kotor by boat and our full day road trip to northern Montenegro .

Journey to Lake Skadar

It is only 40 miles (65 km) from Kotor to Virpazar, a small fisherman’s town on the shores of Lake Skadar. This would suggest an easy and quick drive from one to the other. However, this is not the case. It is relatively easy but not necessarily quick.

The route between Kotor and Budva (a very popular coastal town along the way) is a two lane road, almost always with heavy traffic. Although it is only 13 miles (22 km) between the two, in the summer, it can take up to 1 1/2 hours to travel just between the towns depending on the time of day.

Fortunately, there is far less traffic once you pass through Budva. Overall, it took a little over 2 hours the morning that we travelled between Kotor and Virpazar.

Self Driving or Do A Private Tour to Lake Skadar?

We decided to hire a car and driver/guide to take us rather than rent a car ourself. Why?

  • We only had one day and wanted to make sure that we saw everything that we should.
  • We also wanted to enjoy the drive. The scenery is remarkable and sometimes its hard to appreciate it when you are driving or navigating.
  • The tour was also going to include other towns such as Cetinje and Njegusi that I also wanted to see but knew that the driving in the mountains would be far more challenging.

For tour options from Kotor (or other starting points such as Budva or Podogorica), please click here .

Having said that, there is nothing that I saw that should deter you from self driving between Kotor and Lake Skadar. For sure, there was lots of traffic between Kotor and Budva and it was a bit slow. However, the roads were well maintained, relatively straight and the driving felt safe.

If you wish to drive to Lake Skadar National Park and then, book private or group boat tours of Lake Skadar with lunch or hikes to monasteries, or to watch the sunset, please click here .

The Scenery Enroute To Lake Skadar National Park

Like every other hour that we spent in Montenegro, we spent the whole drive with our eyes glued to the scenery. It was simply breathtaking. Most of the drive hugged the side of a mountain with panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea, beach towns or endless valleys. I had to stop myself from asking Andreas to pull over for yet another photo at least a dozen times.

I absolutely loved our time at Lake Skadar, but quite frankly, it could have been massively disappointing and I would still recommend the drive!

Lake Skadar

Lake Skadar National Park

At Virpazar, we picked up our private boat and captain. We spent one hour touring Lake Skadar and it was spectacularly beautiful. I could have spent hours there.

Lake Skadar is a lake shared by Montenegro and Albania. It is the largest lake in Southern Europe with the largest bird reserve in Europe. Lake Skadar and the area around it in Montenegro are within a national park – Lake Skadar National Park.

Lake Skadar and Lake Skadar National Park are stunning. On our one hour cruise, we glided through thousands of lily pads by islands and strips of land that were largely untouched, barely seeing another soul. Occasionally, we spotted ruins and once, we saw a monastery amongst the trees. Apparently, there are 20 such buildings – monasteries, churches, villages, fortresses and sacred monuments all around Lake Skadar, some of which are over a thousand years old.

Lake Skadar

Lunch was included as part of our cruise package. Once we returned to Virapazar, we walked 3 minutes to a local restaurant.

We were served platters and platters of delicious food – different kinds of fish caught in the lake, salads, fries, boiled potatoes, and baskets of crusty bread. The servings were huge and the food was amazing. I’m kicking myself for forgetting to take a photo of the platters of food before we dove in and ate. They were simply extraordinary. Our leftovers likely could have fed us for a couple days more had we had a kitchen in our hotel room!

Recommendations For Lake Skadar National Park

If you have the time, I would highly recommend allotting more than a half day at Lake Skadar. While we cruised, I was dying to get off the boat and go for a hike on one of the pretty islands that we saw around the lake.

You can rent kayaks and other boats, bike and swim in countless spots. It was definitely a place that, without time constraints, I would have spent at least a full day, if not a couple, exploring.

Having said that, I am thrilled that we made the journey and loved our time there.

Download my personally crafted 4 day Montenegro travel guide with my hotel and restaurant recommendations, tours and activities that I enjoyed.

Lake Skadar To Cetinje

After lunch, we drove to Cetinje , a city about an hour away from Lake Skadar.

Cetinje is the Old Royal Capital of Montenegro. In addition, it is the historic and secondary capital of Montenegro, and where the official residence of the President of Montenegro is located.

Cetinje is located inland around 671 m (2200 ft) above sea level on a plain surrounded by limestone mountains, including Mount Lovćen. It was much cooler than Lake Skadar and Kotor, which made for a lovely hour of walking and exploring.

Cetinje was a beautiful quiet city with lots of pretty parks, children playgrounds and an appealing walking zone with restaurants and local shops.

Scattered throughout were beautiful buildings built in the 19th Century that were reminiscence of old world charm like Paris, but on a much smaller scale. The architecture and layout of the city was much more sophisticated than any other spot that we visited over our 4 days in Montenegro.

Lake Skadar

Cetinje boasts numerous political and historical sights like the King Nikola Museum, the Cetinje Monastery, and Court Church which is nestled on the ruins of the Old Monastery.

There are also several former European embassies that currently host libraries and other artistic institutions.

Cetinje is sometimes called an “open-air museum’, as you can just walk the streets and see historical buildings or cultural institutions at almost every corner.

The Crazy Drive Back To Kotor From Cetinje

Cetinje to njegusi.

The drive back to Kotor from Cetinje was pretty much unlike any drive that I have done before, and that is saying a lot!

We drove from Cetinje into the mountains for around 30 minutes to a gorgeous little town called Njegusi .  Njegusi is known for the birthplace of the Petrovic dynasty which ruled Montenegro for over 200 years. It is also well known for its folk architecture, cheese and prosciutto.

This part of the drive was breathtakingly beautiful and calm. The roads were either switchbacks or curvy with pretty views of deep green valleys, little settlements, and majestic mountains. The roads were not particularly wide but felt safe as most of them were either against the mountain or next to a gentle slope.

Lake Skadar

Njegusi to Bay of Kotor

It was after we left Njegusi and headed back to Kotor that the drive became absolutely nuts. It was only 15 miles (24 km) to Kotor, but we had to descend from the top of the mountain back to the coast. That translated into a drive along a serpentine road with 25 switchbacks, a death drop over the side, and barely a guardrail in site.

The road was hardly larger than a one lane road but with two way traffic. Several times, we had to pull over and/or reverse to allow larger vehicles (even buses) coming in the opposite direction to pass.

But, what views!!!! Oh my gosh, they were awe inspiring. We also had the good fortune of driving down while the sun was setting. It was remarkable.

Lake Skadar

If you have any fear of heights, mountain roads, twisty turns or danger, this is not the drive for you. We absolutely loved it and would tell anyone that this is a “must do” activity in Montenegro. However, it is pretty scary in parts.

I would absolutely NOT recommend self driving this road!

I loved this day trip. All day long, the views were simply astonishing. Our time at Lake Skadar National Park was incredible. I only wish that we could have spent more time exploring other parts of Lake Skadar or hiking on one of the pristine trails around it.

Cetinje was a very interesting place to visit . The “old world” architecture and layout of the town were completely different from any other place that we visited in Montenegro.

Finally, the drive from Njegusi back to the Bay of Kotor was completely insane. However, the views of the Bay of Kotor and the sunset made it the perfect ending to our day.

I know where to go on my next holidays in Europe – Montenegro! Loved reading about your day trip from Kotor to Lake Skadar National Park. The national park sounds like the perfect place for nature and the fresh outdoors. I’m always looking for new opportunities to hike to cycle around. The views are simply stunning.

I’m glad that my blog has inspired your next European trip! I’d love to go back. Hopefully, you will have time to visit Lake Skadar or at least drive along the coast and admire the beautiful scenery.

I liked the itinerary. It takes you almost everywhere in Montenegro. Lake Skadar seems so interesting and so is Kotor but the hotel in Kotor caught most of my attention. It looks like an old palace. You seem to have a great day in Montenegro.

We did have a great day. The buildings in Kotor Old Town are all like this. You feel like you have travelled back in time to medieval times. It was lovely.

This is a great itinerary and very informative post about Montenegro. I really hope I get to visit there one day. The photos you shared are stunning… beautiful coast lines!!

What a fabulous day trip in Montenegro. It was the right decision to hire the guide/driver since he took you to some beautiful spots. I’d rather enjoy the scenery too! Plus I love visiting UNESCO heritage sites! I’ll have to look at Montenegro.

I think there are few World Unesco Sites in Montenegro, so you should enjoy yourself the next time you get there.

Such a beautiful area! I’ve never been, but I’ve had family members who visited and have raved about it. I wonder how easy it is to hop between the different countries in the Balkans on one trip.

I think that it is fairly easy by car or by bus. It would also be very inexpensive right now, so I think it is a good idea to plan that soon. I’m thinking of doing the same. I loved Montenegro and now I am so curious to see Albania and Bulgaria.

I loved Budva, Kotor and Perast when I visited Montenegro. I hope to see them again soon 🙂 As for Lake Skadar, I saw it from the Albanian side. It was a lovely sight as well

I hope to go to Albania soon. I am keen to see Lake Skadar from their side as well.

So glad to have stumbled upon your Montenegro post. I am planning a 1 week road trip around the country beginning from Kotor. Lake Skadar looks gorgeous. I had not thought of including it in my itinerary but it looks totally worth going to. Thanks for the helpful tips!

Hi Medha, Lake Skadar is totally worth it. You will have a wonderful week!

I’ve heard fantastic things about Montenegro and I can easily understand why. Your photos of the Bay of Kotor are stunning! Your itinerary would make for a great road trip!

Sounds amazing. Do you by any chance have Andrea´s number ?

Yes, it is +38268621624. Enjoy your time!

Wow, What an amazing day trip to Montenegro. I feel you spend a great moment there. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Thank you. I know we did a lot but I loved seeing as much of this beautiful country as possible.

Visitor's Guide to Lake Skadar Kayaking: Beauty, Tranquility, Fun!

Sarah profile pic

BY SARAH PAVLOVIC

Lake Skadar kayak tour

Lake Skadar kayaking is a fantastic way to explore one of the most beautiful places in a country that's bursting with natural beauty.

Skadar Lake is one of Europe's most important sanctuaries for birds, especially migratory birds. And this is just one of the reasons the national park has become a major attraction for tourists to Montenegro.

Of course when you visit, getting out on the lake is must-do . You can do this on a boat trip  or by kayak.  There's nothing like gliding across the calm waters, spying on rare birds as they go about their business. The tranquil lake is like another world where time stops.

Lake Skadar is home to hundreds of bird species, many of them rare and endangered. Kayaking on the lake allows you to explore tiny lily pad lined alleys and watch the native wildlife without scaring it away.

Along the way you'll be able to jump out and swim, enjoy freshwater beaches and discover the history of the lake.

Where to Find Lake Skadar Kayaking

The best place to go kayaking on Lake Skadar is from the lakeside town of Virpazar, which lies around 20 minutes from Montenegro's capital, Podgorica.

Virpazar is a small, atmospheric township on the shore of Lake Skadar which dates back to the 13 th century. From Virpazar you can kayak to an island prison, ruined fortresses, freshwater beaches, picnic areas and island monasteries. You can also see a plethora of wildlife like turtles, frogs, cormorants, pelicans, kingfishers and more.

In the township itself you'll find some excellent restaurants serving local cuisine, including the lake's specialty, marinated carp. Nearby you'll find Besac Fortress, several good wineries and a visitor center.

When to Kayak on Skadar Lake

The best time for Lake Skadar kayaking is between April and November. This is when the weather will be warmest and the lake most active.

May and September are ideal times to do some bird-watching. Spring is breeding season and you'll see lots of activity and mating rituals out on the lake.

High summer (July and August) is when the water temperatures are warmest. The lake gets very warm in summer (and through September) and hovers around 26°C (79°F) .

Local's Tip: Whenever you enter Skadar Lake National Park ie. go out on the water, you'll need to pay a  €5 per person national park entrance fee at the booth in Virpazar.

Lake Skadar Kayaking Guided Tours

These Lake Skadar kayaking tours will take you to see some of Montenegro's most spectacular natural and cultural sights. The lake is the biggest in the Balkans and the tours take you to places you would never find on your own. I recommend booking a tour if you're interested in seeing any of these sights.

Island Prison Kayaking Tour

Lake Skadar Island Prison Kayak Tour

This tour is a return paddle from the lily pads and rushes of Virpazar to the old island prison of Grmožur and then to a secluded freshwater beach called Pješačac. Along the way you stop at the tiny lakeside settlement of Raduš for a lunch of fresh lake fish and other traditional specialities.

With a bit of R&R at nearby Murić i freshwater beach and several great swimming spots on the way, the tour is perfect for all abilities.

Virpazar to Grmožur Island and Lesendro Fort

Lake Skadar kayak tour to Grmozur island and Lesendro fort

This tour takes you to two of Lake Skadar's landmarks - Grmožur island and Lesendro fort.  Grmožur island was a notorious island prison and Lesendro fortress was built in 1843 to help defend against Ottoman Turk invasion . It finishes with swimming and drinks on nearby Pelinovo beach.

There's a choice of double and single kayaks available, so they're ideal for families with children who are too small to paddle on their own. All rentals come with safety equipment like life vests, instructions and advice on the best places to see based on the current conditions and wildlife to see.
