Nepal Trekking Tours & Nepal Hiking Tours Reviews

I have already done the review sent from g adventures - another one is duplication.
I had a fantastic time with the trekking guide Dika Rai. He is a very pleasant and humorous guy and we made a good team. I didn't have to worry about anything other than hiking ?. Alpine Ramble, run by Dil Gurung, is a very professional company that still provides very personal support. I was personally welcomed by Dil at the start of my tour and he took a lot of time to explain everything to me and again at the end to say goodbye and hand over a certificate. I felt safe and well looked after at all times on the mountain. We weren't always lucky with the weather, which led to delays in the flights between Kathmandu and Lukla. But thanks to the good support, this wasn't a problem. Dika and Dil took care of booking or rebooking the appropriate flights in the background, which was particularly convenient for me because I returned to Lukla with Dika a day earlier than originally planned. Acclimatization to the altitude of over 5000m was also no problem. The 11-day program allows enough time and special acclimatization days to get used to the altitude.  I really enjoyed the trip and took tons of wonderful photos. Highly recommended ??

Travel Tips for Nepal Treks

  • Plan your trekking holiday in Nepal during the peak seasons of spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) to enjoy clear skies, moderate temperatures, and favorable trekking conditions.
  • Prioritize physical fitness and allow ample time to acclimatize to the high altitudes. Start with shorter treks before attempting more challenging routes.
  • Pack essentials like sturdy hiking boots, waterproof jackets, loose-fit trousers, layers for varying temperatures, a good-quality backpack, sunscreen, a headlamp with extra batteries, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.
  • Enhance your trekking experience and safety by hiring a certified guide or joining a reputable trekking agency. They provide valuable insights, ensure safety, and navigate the trails efficiently.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and opt for nutritious meals to maintain energy levels during a Nepal trekking tour.
  • Respect local customs, traditions, and religious sites. Practice responsible tourism by leaving no trace, disposing of waste properly, and supporting local communities.
  • Obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking activities. Familiarize yourself with the necessary permits, such as the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) and national park permits. You will also need an aerial permit from CAAN if you want to operate a camera-fitted drone.
  • Research and plan your budget accordingly, factoring in accommodation, meals, permits, and additional expenses such as optional activities, tips for guides and porters, and souvenirs.

Exploring the remote trails of western Nepal | Lachlan Gardiner

A trek in Nepal is an unforgettable travel experience. Join us to explore the many fertile valleys, peaceful villages, winding mountain trails dotted with prayer flags and wildflowers, gigantic glaciers and of course the famous snowcapped peaks of the world's highest mountains on a high quality, all inclusive trekking style that we've refined since 1975.

It's the combination of awe-inspiring wilderness, vibrant culture and gentle pace that captures the hearts of those who visit, luring people back and confirming Nepal's official tourism slogan: Once is Not Enough.

Visit the Annapurna region on our self sufficient treks through lush foothills, Hindu villages and spectacular mountain scenery; or trek through remote Sherpa villages and alongside iconic peaks as you make your way through the life-changing landscapes of the Everest Region, supported by our cheerful team of cooks and porters.

Stay at our private eco-camps when you tackle the once-in-a-lifetime trek to Everest Base Camp; add on a climb to the top of Kala Pattar or Gokyo Ri for incredible views of Everest; or join one of our challenging mountaineering expeditions to peaks such as Mera Peak, Island Peak or Lobuche with our experienced leaders.

Head east and trek to the base of Kanchenjunga; or cross high passes and remote trails as you traverse the country on the Great Himalayan Trail, arguably the world's most epic trek. Whichever trek you choose, you'll encounter breathtaking landscapes, rich local cultures and generous hospitality in the villages you pass through.

Our all inclusive approach

On top of all meals while on trek, highly trained local guides and an experienced trekking and cooking crew, we also provide you with the use of a trek pack, which includes a quality sleeping bag, down or fibre fill jacket and insulated mat (valued at over US$500).

Unrivalled experience in Nepal

We've been organising treks, climbs and tours in Nepal for over four decades. Our firsthand knowledge of the region is unmatched, and we continue to push the envelope each year by innovating new programs while also finessing our classics.

Stay at our exclusive Eco-Comfort Camps

Four decades of feedback and experience has proven that camping provides the most authentic trekking experience. Across the Annapurna and Everest regions you’ll enjoy the extra comfort of our exclusive camps, which feature standing height tents, clean beds with mattresses and pillows, a heated dining room, composting sit down toilets and more. Do yourself and the environment a favour by choosing our minimal impact accommodations.

All meals on trek included

Did you know that meals on a 2 week tea-house based trek in Nepal could cost you in excess of US$800pp?! Value for money, peace of mind, looking after your health as well as the local landscapes are just some of the reasons why we believe it’s a wise decision to choose a Nepal trek with all meals included. Watch our ‘7 Reasons Why We Include Meals On Our Nepal Treks’ video on every Nepal trip page to learn even more.

Experienced guides

From Tim Macartney-Snape, who with Greg Mortimer completed the first Australian summit of Mount Everest, to Bir Singh, one of Nepal's most experienced local guides, our leaders are the key to our success as they strive to make your experience exceptional.

Widest range of adventures

From a trek around the Annapurna Circuit and crossing the high passes of the Everest region to a challenging mountaineering expedition, we offer the widest range of Nepal adventures on the market with a trip to suit every level and interest.

Pioneering the GHT and other world firsts

World Expeditions operated the first commercially guided and fully supported expedition along the entire length of the Nepal section of the Great Himalaya Trail, a representation of exploratory trekking at its finest. Our ability to pioneer this challenging trek underscores our superb logistics and crew in Nepal and embodies the essence of World Expeditions' travel philosophy.

Leaders in responsible travel

Responsible travel is at the heart of every program that we offer in Nepal. World Expeditions is a founding member of the International Porter Protection Group and has pioneered many sustainable tourism initiatives that benefit our staff, the local community and the environment such as our 10 Pieces Litter Collection initiative, our Community Project Travel program and our exclusive eco-campsites in the Everest, Gokyo and Annapurna regions.

Litter collection

The 10 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 10 pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our Nepal treks. This simple yet effective initative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal and the Labor Union of Nepal, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Nepal to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and blankets. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency helicopter evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, woolen socks and gloves, leather or canvas shoes, sunglasses and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 30kgs.

Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites in the Everest and Annapurna regions contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimise our environmental footprint by using yak or cow dung to fuel heaters, kerosene to cook meals and boil water, rainwater tanks, composting and septic toilets and incinerators to burn paper and non-toxic plastic waste.

Private eco-campsites

Comfort and adventure are combined in our private eco-campsites. The campsites are exclusive to World Expeditions, featuring raised beds and high ceiling tents as well as dining and toilet structures. The campsites were designed with the environment in mind, minimising the impact of our presence and providing employment opportunities to local communities.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy fully supported camping in remote locations with our outstanding crew of sherpas, porters and kitchen staff. While the campsite locations have been handpicked for their location, our commitment to responsible travel ensures our footprint is kept to a minimum.

Select locations involve lodges on a twin share basis that provide a comfortable and hygienic environment to relax at the end of the day.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in good quality properties that are centrally located, atmospheric and reliable.

Remote trekking in far western Nepal&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Tim Macartney-Snape</i>

Our trekking season in Nepal extends from mid-September to May. However within this period there are clear seasons in the weather.

Trekking in Nepal during winter, from December to February, offers cool to mild and clear days with often very cold nights. Occasionally winter storms can bring snow as low as 2500m.

In March the cold, dry winter season begins to give way to warmer, spring conditions. Mornings are usually clear with cloud build-up occasionally bringing afternoon rain.

Late spring conditions, in May, are generally hot at low elevations and as the clouds build up to the next monsoon, which generally begins in June, daily afternoon rainstorms are common. This is a period that generally has clear weather at the higher altitudes and is traditionally a time when mountaineering expeditions commence their ascents.

The monsoon creates a rainy season in Nepal, which lasts from mid-June to mid-September. During this time the Nepal Himalaya is unsuitable for trekking, with the exception of a few remote valleys.

During the monsoon in Nepal it is possible to trek in Tibet, the Indian Himalayan regions of Kulu, Garhwal & Ladakh, Central Asia and Pakistan, places that are at their best during this time.

The post-monsoon period - From early September the monsoon rain starts to decrease. By mid-October through to mid-December the weather is usually stable with mild to warm days, cold nights and clear views. Daytime temperatures can reach 25 - 30 degrees Celsius at lower altitudes and decrease as you gain height. Over 3000 meters the daytime temperatures can vary as much as 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, and may be hotter or colder, depending on whether it is sunny or windy etc. At night at lower altitudes, temperatures do not normally drop much, although as you approach November it does get colder and the days shorter. Up high it can drop sharply at night, from 0 to minus 10 or 15 and more when camped on the ice or snow.

The pre-monsoon period - In March the cold, dry winter season begins to give way to warmer, wetter spring conditions. Mornings are usually clear with cloud build-up bringing occasional afternoon rainstorms. Views of the mountains in the middle of the day and afternoon may often be obscured. Daytime temperatures increase quickly in March with temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius and mild nights. At higher altitudes it is similar to the conditions of the post-monsoon period, however there is usually more snow, which has accumulated over the winter period. There are spectacular displays of rhododendrons and wildflowers at this time of year. Late spring conditions ie April and May, are generally hot at low elevations and as the clouds build up to the next monsoon, daily afternoon rainstorms are common.

Time in Nepal

Nepal is +5:45 ahead of UTC/ GMT

Nepal is a country of high linguistic diversity. 123 different primary languages were reported in Nepal’s 2011 national census—including Nepali (official) 44.6%, Maithali 11.7%, Bhojpuri 6%, Tharu 5.8%, Tamang 5.1%, Newar 3.2%, Magar 3%, Bajjika 3%, Urdu 2.6%, Avadhi 1.9%, Limbu 1.3%, Gurung 1.2%, other 10.4%, unspecified 0.2%

Nepali is Nepal’s official language and also its lingua franca, understood by most in Nepal, and spoken by many living in Bhutan, India and further abroad

Newar (aka Nepal Bhasa; not to be confused with Nepali) is the native language of the Newar people and was Nepal’s official administrative language from the 14th to late 18th centuries, but is now considered by UNESCO to be an endangered language.

English is spoken by many in government, business and tourism sectors, and is part of the core curriculum of Nepal’s education system

Nepalese Rupee fix

In Nepali the local currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). The Nepalese Rupee is different to the Indian Rupee, and the Government of Nepal has banned the import, export and use of 500 and 1000 Indian Rupees notes in Nepal.

It is difficult to convert your NPR back to foreign currency, and you will not be able to exchange NPR once back in your own country. There are many money change shops in Thamel and around Kathmandu where you will also be able to change money, however, note that many places will not allow you to change currency back.

There are also ATM’s available for use in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Nepalese traders do not like TORN notes. Most people will not accept them so ensure you check your notes when exchanging and refuse to accept any torn notes

International Dialing Code

Nepal Electricity Plug

Electricity in Nepal is 230 Volts, at 50 hertz. The most common pin type is C (two round prong).

Electricity is becoming more widely available throughout Nepal though generally speaking the further you venture from the trailhead the less reliable it becomes. More populous areas are serviced by the grid or small scale hydro-electric projects. In more remote areas solar energy is harnessed for electricity production and as such can be unreliable and in short supply.

Many of our camps and eco-lodges provide charging facilities for small electronic devices such as phones, cameras and battery packs. In some cases this is provided free of charge however in most cases there is a fee associated with the use of such amenities. This can range from NPR100 – NPR500 (US$1 - $5) per device charged, depending on how far you are from the power grid.

We recommend you consider purchasing portable power banks or solar chargers for phone charging and at least one spare camera battery.

All nationalities require a visa for Nepal. For nationals of most countries, multiple entry Nepal tourist visas can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), however, to speed up arrival processes, it is easier to obtain your visa prior to departure. The details for the various options available to you are outlined below:

Visa issued by a Nepalese Diplomatic Mission prior to your departure from home -

Queues are common during peak tourist arrival times, especially at the visa application counters. In order to skip the bulk of the queues you are able in many cases to apply for your visa at your nearest Nepalese diplomatic mission. The location and contact details of your nearest mission can be found at https://nepalembassy.gov.np. Visa fees are often comparable to that paid on arrival though you will need to consider the courier costs associated in sending your passport to and from the appropriate mission. Please note that THE VISA IS ONLY VALID FOR 6 MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF ISSUE, ie. you must enter and depart Nepal within six months of the date of issue of the visa. There is an online form for completion which is then printed and presented with your passport and payment to the relevant mission for visa issuance. The online form can be sourced at https://nepaliport.immigration.gov.np/onlinevisa-mission/application and there is a handy user manual which can be downloaded from the site to guide you through the process.

Visa Application submitted Pre-arrival, with visa issued on arrival -

There is an official online application portal (https://nepaliport.immigration.gov.np/) that allows you to submit and print your application prior to arrival (note this can only be completed a maximum 15 days prior) which removes the need to carry passport photographs as the electronic versions of your image are supplied as part of the process. Once you’ve applied, the form can be printed for use on arrival and payment made as outlined below.

Visa Application submitted on arrival -

If you opt to obtain your visa on arrival and have not prefilled the online form as noted above, join the queues to a row of computers and fill out the online form. Unfortunately, at time of writing, there are no printers attached to the computers so make sure to take screenshot of your final application, then join the queue to pay for your visa (officials will need to sight the screenshot of your application). You will need to pay the application fee for which cash is recommended and will be issued with a receipt. The preferred payment is USD however AUD, CAD and GBP will also be accepted at the exchange rate of the day.

Visa costs are:

US$30 – 15 days

US$50 – 30 days

US$125 – 90 days

Proceed to the immigration desk with your screenshot of the online application, receipt, two passport sized photographs if you are applying on arrival (note when using the pre-arrival service, e-versions are used however carrying a few passport photos is always advisable) and passport for processing and visa issuance.

The company Nepal highland trek really organised everything so well. They looked after us from the moment I sent the first email. The trip itself is really well organised and you see a great variety of different aspects of Nepalese village life. Balmiki our guide was fantastic. He looked after us from the moment we met to the moment we departed. I’d highly recommend this company.

Hiking Annapurna

Trekking in nepal himalayas with hiking annapurna.

With eight of the top ten highest summits in the world and some of the most beautiful landscapes which are only reachable on foot, trekking in Nepal is one of the unique experiences of Asia.

Trekking is the most popular activity in Nepal, and travellers will be bombarded on the streets of Kathmandu and the trekking hub, Pokhara, with guides, organised tours and gear for sale or rent. The huge variety of options allows for people of many ages and capabilities to attempt a trek in the country. While you could spend a year planning an expedition to wild and lofty places that few would dare attempt, you could also arrive in Kathmandu with no plans and be on the trail in a matter of days.

Despite what many may perceive, trekking in Nepal is not necessarily wandering alone through an uncharted wilderness. As they walk along the well-marked trekking paths, travellers will often discover quite the opposite; hundreds of locals passing through each day as they haul food, water and other odd necessities back to their tiny villages, along with dozens of fellow trekkers. The regularly-spaced villages and teahouses allow trekkers good opportunities to rest and recover, either for a few minutes or the night. The strong culture and unreserved friendliness of the Nepalese people can also be witnessed as one traverses the hill tracks.

Loved skiing in Kalinchowk

Apart from the view of Dhaulagiri, Langtang, Gauri Shankar, Mount Ganesh, and other tall mountains, I loved skiing in the region. The experience of Skiing was fantastic and it is very close to Kathmandu. At the same time, I can have some trekking to refresh myself. I would like to recommend my friends to visit this place to get the experience of trekking and other adventurous activities with Hiking Annapurna

Great company offering very fair value

Hiking Annapurna made our trip unforgettable and experience.  We booked in March 2019 and have been helped by Manish and begin asking the question he replied patiently.  We were picked up at the airport by a friendly guide on 18th January 2020.  The great arrangement of the resort and accommodation was perfectly managed, and each day filled with religious and humbling experience, obtained from helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable guides and porters.  They were truly amazing. Ramesh was an excellent organizer.  He had it figured out, like clockwork, nothing was left to chance.  Great support in putting together a full itinerary on short notice.  Each of the trip was enjoyable and well planned.  I also highly recommend Hiking Annapurna Trekking and Tours and always give the very best match and exceed your expectations

Stunning View and Spiritually Rich - EVEREST

This past year, I had done trekking into Nepal for the Thrill experience with all the Hiking Annapurna trekking and tours team and the provider reacts to our question very quickly with great response and clear detail.  It is hard to write this review without getting hyperbole following hyperbole.  They provided the best Hotel rooms, standard lodges with quality dinner and foods.  Our guide created a plan to perform the short Everest Base Camp and this trip easily finished with a humble guide.  The trek was about a stunning view of snowcapped mountains and glacier-fed river and landscape which grows increasingly and also the weather was bright - clear blue sky with no rain and otherworldly scenery.  Climbing into the top hill behind Namche Bazaar you are rewarded with the very first view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse to the north. This area is truly rich by diversity, ethnic groups, and civilization. I heard so much about hiking and Nepali culture during the trek and 100% recommend Hiking Annapurna trekking and tours Nepal.

Indra's warm and friendly personality made the trek even more enjoyable, as he shared stories and engaged us in cultural exchanges with the locals we encountered along the way. Travers Nepal's organization was flawless, with well-planned accommodations and delicious local cuisine. I can't recommend Travers Nepal and Indra enough for anyone looking to explore the stunning Himalayas. This trek was a life-changing experience, and I'm grateful to have had such a knowledgeable and friendly guide to lead the way.

The trek (Annapurna Sanctuary) was 52km total, and Sherpa Trekking mapped it out perfectly in the itinerary. The weather was a bit severe in some parts, but thanks to the help of the guides, porters, and other support, I made it through safely. I was able to see the great Annapurna I, and it was breathtaking. The guides were very knowledgeable and gentle, and the accommodations and transportation were easy and convenient. Family trip around Manaslu circuit

Actually, we planned the Manaslu circuit trek right before the Covid outbreak in 2020 and had to cancel back then. After two years, as the entry policies in Nepal relaxed, we started looking for a tour operator to organize our journey. Since we were traveling during school holidays for our son (2 weeks in total), we had a limited amount of time and wanted to find a company, which could take over all the paperwork on one hand, and provide us with an intensive itinerary on the other. Nepal Mother House Treks fulfilled both demands, remaining very competitive in price, and accepting credit cards for a prepayment to guarantee the booking. We were met at the airport arrival gate, accompanied and supported throughout our stay in Kathmandu, and brought to the airport departure gate. And of course, the mountain trekking became an unforgettable experience. For those who want to experience the natural beauty and traditional lifestyle of mountain inhabitants of Nepal, surrounded by Tibetan Buddhism sights, rivers and springs, jungle flowers, and the highest mountains on our planet, the Manaslu circuit should be a perfect fit. Our guide Jayaram planned our route at its best, was always ready to accommodate for any ad-hoc changes and provided us with great historical and cultural background during our trip. Nikita & Family

Langtang/Gosainkund/Helambu trek and carpet buying

Tom Beavers, Seattle, WA (USA) Karna, thank you so much for another wonderful trek. This is my 3rd trek with you - the first being the Annapurna Circuit and then a tour of the Everest region, starting at Jiri and then trekking up to Gokyo, going over Cho La, up to Kala Pattar, and then up the Chukhung valley. I continue to learn so much about Nepal from you, even on my 3rd trip! On the Langtang Helambu trek, I appreciated the stories about the bee hives on the cliffs and the trail that was closed because of the black bear. And thank you for translating the stories from our Nepali friends that we met along the way. Those cured Nepalese lepers, that were training to climb Everest, were incredible and so interesting to talk with. When I got sick for a couple of days at Kyanjin Gompa, you did a great job of caring for me, bringing me soup and tea, and encouraging me to eat when I felt nauseous. You were so patient on the trail until I recovered my strength. Above Thulo Syabru, I really like the local trails that you took Chris and me on, away from the main trail. It was fun walking through the local farmer's fields and visiting with the locals, but it was sure tiring climbing all their fences! At Gosainkund, you did such a great job telling stories about the lakes, the gods, and the Hindus that pilgrimage there each August. On top of Laurebina La, the awesome view of the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and the Annapurnas will be etched in my mind forever. I wish we could have spent more time lying on the grass taking in that incredible view. The whole trip was perfect. And those orchids were so beautiful, as we descended toward Sundarijal. After arriving in Kathmandu, celebrating Tihar Tika with your family was very special for me. I will never forget it. And finally, thank you for your wonderful tour of the Kathmandu valley, including a cherished trip back to Jawalakhel to purchase a wonderful carpet for my wife. You helped me pick out a great one, and my wife loves it! Anyone who books a trip with Nepal Mother House Treks is in for a real treat!

Manaslu -Tsum Valley trip 21 day with Reliable Agency

We did the 21-day Manaslu -Tsum Valley trip with Nepal Mother House at the end of October. Very friendly and reliable agency in Kathmandu. Owner Karna Rana gave us very helpful advice and kindly answered all our questions. Special thanks to our guide Jayram and porter Umesh, who did a great job! Very good service!

Seasonal clothes and stuff

Absolutely! Advising clients on appropriate clothing and gear according to the season ensures they are prepared for the varied weather conditions they may encounter during their Nepal Package tour. Here’s a general guideline for clothing and gear based on each season:

Summer (June to August):

Lightweight, breathable clothing such as cotton shirts and shorts for daytime excursions.

Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect against strong sunlight.

Light rain jacket or umbrella for occasional showers, especially in higher elevations.

Autumn (September to November):

Layered clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a light jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.

Comfortable hiking pants or trousers for outdoor activities.

Sturdy hiking boots or shoes for trekking and exploring.

Winter (December to February):

Warm, insulated clothing such as wool sweaters, fleece jackets, and thermal underwear.

Waterproof and windproof outer layers to protect against cold temperatures and occasional snowfall.

Insulated gloves, scarves, and hats to keep extremities warm.

Spring (March to May):

Similar to autumn, layered clothing is advisable, including long-sleeved shirts, lightweight sweaters, and a light jacket.

Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots for exploring.

Rain gear or waterproof jackets for sporadic showers during the transition from winter to summer.

Additionally, regardless of the season, it’s essential to pack essentials such as comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small backpack for day trips. Travel Insurance for Your 12-Day Nepal Package Tour

Travel insurance is highly recommended, if not mandatory, for a 12-day package tour to Nepal, especially if your itinerary involves any adventurous activities. Here’s why:

Peace of mind: Unexpected situations can arise during travel. Insurance provides a financial safety net in case of medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, or even political unrest.

Medical Coverage:   Medical care in Nepal, particularly in remote areas, can be expensive.  Emergency medical evacuation by helicopter from mountainous regions can cost tens of thousands of dollars.  Ensure your plan covers a minimum of $100,000 in medical expenses.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption:   If you have to cancel your trip due to a covered reason (illness, natural disaster), travel insurance will reimburse your prepaid expenses.  It can also help cover costs if your trip is interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances.

What to Consider When Choosing Travel Insurance for Nepal:

Altitude:   Nepal has varying altitudes.  If your itinerary includes high-altitude trekking (above 3,000 meters), opt for a policy that specifically covers medical issues at high altitudes.

Activities:   Choose a plan that covers the activities you plan to do in Nepal.  This could include trekking, white-water rafting, paragliding, or bungee jumping.  Not all plans cover adventurous activities.

Trip Cost:   Generally, travel insurance cost is a percentage (4-10%) of your total trip cost.

ATM and Money Exchange Facility for Nepal Package Tour

Staying Financially Informed on Your Nepal Trip

  • ATMs and Cash: Major cities and tourist hubs in Nepal have ATMs that accept international credit and debit cards, allowing you to withdraw Nepalese Rupees (NPR).
  • Money Exchange: Money exchange services are also available, so you can convert your foreign currency to NPR.
  • Cash is King in Remote Areas: It’s wise to carry a mix of cash and cards. Banking facilities can be limited in some remote areas.

Tip: Always inform your bank that you’ll be traveling abroad to avoid any issues with using your cards overseas.

Electricity, Wi-Fi and Internet Services in Nepal Package Tour

You will get the wifi and electricity facilities in the hotels/ lodges you are staying at. The internet is reliable and you can also charge your electronic devices. You will be able to enjoy 24 hrs Wi-Fi services in the hotel.

Silhouettes of four climbers in front of Everest at sunset on a clear day, Nepal

Sitting on the spine of the world, sandwiched between the superpowers of China and India, you’ll find humble Nepal.

We’re not meant to play favourites, but when you’ve been running Nepal tours for three decades, the country kind of gets under your skin. Picture a tiny Himalayan country where sherpas trudge the mountain paths and prayer flags crisscross the sky, their fluttering Buddhist mantras waving in the breeze. Follow our leaders up to Everest Base Camp, trek the rhododendron forests of the Annapurna, track rhinos through Chitwan National Park or stuff your face with momos in the warren-like streets of Kathmandu's Thamel. Whichever type of  Nepal trip  you choose, we promise you one thing: you’ve never been anywhere like this.

Best time to visit nepal.

Nepal's climate is primarily temperate, with some tropical and alpine regions. From June until August, the monsoon hits, making it too wet and humid for trekking.

The post-monsoon period from September to November is rice-harvesting season and is characterised by lush vegetation, clean air and excellent mountain views. Days are warm and sunny, although nights become increasingly cool. This is the start of the trekking season, which runs until May.

Winter (December to February) is dry and clear, with temperatures dropping below freezing at high altitudes, although in Kathmandu, it can still sometimes reach a pleasant 25 º C.

Spring (March to May) is warmer and is a particularly beautiful time to visit as the rhododendrons and the orchids are in flower.

Culture and customs

With more than 30 different ethnic groups and a wide range of religions and language dialects, Nepalese society is rich in diversity. With Indian, Tibetan, Chinese and Mongolian influences, Nepalese food, clothing, customs and music vary, depending on what area you're travelling in and what ethnicity people belong to or identify with.

Learn more about regional culture on a 15 day Tamang Heritage & Langtang Valley Trek.

Hinduism is the dominant religion, followed by Buddhism. Standing alongside these religions, there are also small populations of people who follow Islam and Christianity. Simultaneously, animist beliefs and belief in spirits is common throughout Nepal, particularly within rural communities.

Like India, the caste system exists in Nepal, as does the custom of arranged marriage. As one of the least urbanised countries in the world, life differs greatly between the rural and city-dwelling populations, with rural people largely living a very simple, traditional life - slow-paced, village-based, in connection to their family and local community. Nepalese people are generally very friendly and welcoming of travellers.

Experience Nepal from a new perspective on our culturally-centred 13 day Nepal Women's Expedition.

Eating and drinking

With Tibetan, Chinese and Indian influences, Nepalese food is flavoursome without being too spicy, filling without being rich and reasonably priced for travellers on a budget.

Things to try in Nepal

These fried or steamed dumplings are usually filled with meat or cheese. Comparable to Tibetan momos, kothey are flavoursome snacks that can usually be bought cheaply from street stalls or markets.

Popular with vegetarians and vegans, this lentil soup is usually served with rice and found almost everywhere in Nepal. A safe yet tasty choice for everyone.

This spiced meat curry will usually consist of chicken, buffalo or mutton, as beef hardly features on the menu in Nepal for religious reasons.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Nepal shares borders with   China   and   India   and is home to a wide range of landscapes and habitats. As much as 75% of Nepal's land is dominated by hills and mountain ranges, including the world's highest mountain, but there's so much more to this region than Everest.

A lot of the country is known as the Terai region, characterised by forests, plains, marshes and scrub and w ithin these varied landscapes are the many impressive animal species that inhabit this region. Chitwan National Park is perhaps one of the best places in all of Asia to see its incredible wildlife. Home to a variety of common and protected species, you may be able to spot some exciting house names like the single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros, leopard and the Bengal Tiger.

Experience the beauty of wild Nepal on our 11 day Family Holiday with Teenagers.

History and government

Early history.

Nepal has been inhabited by people for more than 2,500 years, with evidence suggesting tribes of mountain-dwelling people moved to the area from China and other Central Asian regions. Due to a lack of archaeological evidence, little is known about the early periods of history in Nepal, with legend and folklore providing the backdrop to this kingdom of mystery. Ruled early on by the Kirati Dynasty, Nepal continued to be ruled by a succession of dynasties until the Malla Dynasty emerged in the 12th century. During this time, the kingdom expanded rapidly and widely before evolving into small communities with local rule. By the 15th century, many temples and palaces had been built in Nepal, some of which are still in existence either as functioning temples or UNESCO World Heritage sites. The kingdom of Nepal was unified by King Shah in 1768 and went on to sign commercial treaties with Britain in 1792 and 1816 after hostilities with the British East India Company.

Visit a relic of Nepal's royal power on our One Week in Nepal Tour.

Recent history

Nepal held its first elections in 1959, but with the king dissolving parliament and banning political parties soon after, Nepal's monarchy retained power. After decades of pro-democracy movements, Nepal was finally declared a democratic republic in 2008, with Nepal's monarchy being removed from power after ruling for more than 240 years. Nepal celebrated its Year of Tourism in 2011, with arrivals increasing year upon year since 2006 due to increased infrastructure, expansion of air travel and the enduring popularity of the Himalayas and mighty Mount Everest. Learn about Nepal's climbing history at the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara during a Nepal trekking tour.

With Tibetan rice wine flowing and an amazing array of festive food on offer - this is a great time to be in Kathmandu.

Indra Jatra

This eight-day festival held in Kathmandu features ceremonies, dancing and displays of spirituality, but none of these events compares to the spectacle of the third day when Kumari (the living goddess) tours the city streets aboard a chariot. Mani Rimdu Festival

Offering a rare chance to observe the Sherpa culture of the Everest region, this festival held at Tengboche Monastery features days of meditation cycles, religious ceremonies, masked dances and parades. This holy time for Buddhists sees locals travel by foot to receive blessings en masse against a stunning Himalayan backdrop.

Do I need a visa to travel to Nepal?

All foreign nationals (except Indian passport holders) require a visa to enter Nepal. Visas are obtainable from embassies abroad, land borders (including borders with India & Tibet) and on arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan Airport.

Getting a visa at the airport or land borders can sometimes take time due to long queues. There have been instances when travellers are asked to show proof of exit from the country, i.e. flight tickets. You may also need to provide two passport photos and the following fees in US dollars (subject to change, cash only). Other currencies are also accepted, although rates may differ.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Nepal?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Nepal, it's considered polite to leave service workers in restaurants and cafes a 10% tip if a service charge hasn't already been included in the bill.

What is the internet access like in Nepal?

Travellers will be able to access the internet in large cities like Kathmandu. Smaller towns, isolated areas and rural villages may have limited to no access, so prepare to disconnect when leaving the city.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Nepal?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in urban areas, but can be patchy and less reliable in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated on your phone before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in Nepal?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in Nepal. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitiser, as they aren't usually provided.

Can I drink the water in Nepal?

It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Nepal. Filtered water is a better option, try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Nepal?

Credit cards are usually accepted by modern hotels, restaurants and medium-large shops in tourist areas. Smaller shops, cafes, market stalls and places in remote areas probably won’t have facilities that support credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover expenses while in rural areas or when visiting smaller vendors and bazaars.

What is ATM access like in Nepal?

ATMs can be found in Nepal's large cities. Smaller towns and isolated areas will have very few, or none at all, so have enough cash to cover purchases, as ATM access may not be available.

Is Nepal accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely   accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Airports are not yet equipped to international accessibility standards and there are few (if any) adapted vehicles available for hire. Only a few high-end hotels have custom built bathrooms ie. with safety rails or roll in showers. Getting around can be challenging for travellers with disabilities as pedestrians often share the road with vehicles, cities and towns are crowded and streets winding and chaotic. Rickshaws and taxis can be hired easily in Kathmandu, although traffic congestion can be severe. Porters and assistants are readily available for trekking trips. The country is keen to make headway in the accessibility space, with an annual conference on Accessible Tourism being held since 2014 and a shift towards more positive attitudes in the way people with disabilities are perceived in the region. The first “accessible trekking trail” in the country was opened near Pokhara in 2018. Travel companies have arranged custom treks and adventures in Nepal for travellers with disabilities, including on the popular Everest Base Camp route.

Is Nepal a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

Everyone should feel comfortable when they travel with Intrepid and we know that many of our travellers are part of the LGBTQI community. It’s important for our travellers to be aware of the local laws and customs in the destinations we visit as some countries have laws that discriminate against LGBTQI people. We recommend you visit  Equaldex  and/or  Smartraveller  before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQIA+ related laws.

Nepal legalised homosexuality in 2007 and implemented protection by law on the basis of sexual orientation the same year. The new constitution of 2015 also contained a number of provisions for the LGBTQI community, including the right to have preferred gender on ID cards and allowance of some gender neutral terms. It is expected that future ratifications of the constitution may include legalisation of same-sex marriage. Nepal recognises a third gender (meti). Nepal Pride is an annual event held in Kathmandu since 2001 and the Nepal Tourism Board is keen to promote the country as an LGBTQI-friendly destination. Despite the openness of the laws, many LGBTQIA+ Nepalis face discrimination and societal pressure for heterosexual marriage, with harassment and violence, particularly for transgender people, not uncommon. For the LGBTQI visitor to Nepal it’s unlikely you will experience any difficulties or hostility. Holding hands with your partner is socially acceptable, but public intimacy is generally frowned upon as Nepal is still quite conservative in this regard.

For more information about LGBTQIA+ culture in Nepal, please visit:

Does my trip to Nepal support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Nepal directly support our foundation partners, Sagarmatha Next and Seven Women.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Find out more or make a donation.

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip.
