The Witcher 3: How To Get To Kaer Morhen

Kaer Morhen is a legendary location in the Witcher 3 universe, home to the School of the Wolf, and the place where Geralt of Rivia became a Witcher.

The Witcher 3 , the critically-acclaimed RPG from CD Projekt Red, is often praised for its inventive storytelling. The game follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, monster-hunter and mutant, as he searches for his adopted daughter Ciri. This tale takes players across the entire Continent of Witcher 3 , from islands to forests, cities to castles.

One of the most important locations in the Witcher lore is Kaer Morhen , a crumbling castle far in the north that serves as the home of the School of the Wolf. This particular Witcher school is the one that trained Geralt of Rivia, and remains central to the game's plot.

How To Get To Kaer Morhen In Witcher 3

Like several of the most important locations in Witcher 3 , players will only be able to access Kaer Morhen when they've progressed enough in the story. This is despite the game actually beginning at Kaer Morhen, in an introductory sequence which is quickly revealed to be a memory/dream of Geralt's.

In order to explore the castle and its surroundings fully, players will need to reach the Ugly Baby quest , which marks the beginning of Act 2 and the end of the In Ciri's Footsteps quest. In Ciri's Footsteps will have taken players all over Velen, Novigrad, and Skellige, so Kaer Morhen is actually one of the last locations in the game to unlock.

Players will journey to Kaer Morhen as part of the Ugly Baby quest, after which the location will unlock for the rest of the game. Players will then be able to fast travel to the Kaer Morhen signpost from anywhere on the map, as well as any additional signposts they unlock in the area.

What To Do In Kaer Morhen

As well as a crucial story location in Witcher 3 , one that players will return to many times in the following Acts, Kaer Morhen is also a moderately-sized explorable area with its own secrets and treasures to discover. There are five fast-travel signposts, several caves and ruins to explore, and a set of Wolven equipment Diagrams .

There are two items within the Kaer Morhen Keep itself that players should try and collect as soon as possible. The first is Triss' Earring, which can be found on the broken bed in the north-east corner, under the main tower. The Earring can be kept or returned to Triss after the Blindingly Obvious quest, after which she'll start wearing it.

Additionally, players should make sure to grab Berengar's notes from a ruined room near the western wall. Reading these notes will begin the Berengar's Blade quest, which must be advanced by speaking to Vesemir before players set off for the Isle of Mists quest.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for the PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. A PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version is expected to release in December 2022.

How to get to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3

In this guide, we show you how to find and fast travel to the Witcher headquarters at Kaer Morhen.

Few places in Witcher 3 are as celebrated and as famous as Kaer Morhen , the stone keep where Witchers were made and trained for centuries. With numerous quests, treasures and mysteries surrounding Kaer Morhen and the kingdom of Kaedwen, it's understandable why you'd want to get there as soon as possible. We'll show you how, as well as how you can fast travel there afterwards.

How to fast travel to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3

The earliest point you'll get to Kaer Morhen is actually the very start of The Witcher 3, where Geralt is cheerfully bathing and spending time with Yennefer and Ciri. However, this only constitutes the tutorial, whereas afterwards you'll be sent to White Orchard as part of the main plot.

Kaer Morhen doesn't actually become available for proper exploration until a certain point in the main story, namely until Geralt finishes the branching main plotlines in Velen, Skellige and Novigrad. This will take a while, especially if you're inclined to do side quests, so it may be wise to accept that Kaer Morhen is only really approachable in the mid-to-late game.

More specifically, if you'd prefer an ETA for when you'll finally get to explore the area, you'll reach Kaer Morhen towards the beginning of Act 2 of The Witcher 3.

Fortunately, once Kaer Morhen is unlocked, you can go back to it and the surrounding region as much as you like in The Witcher 3.

Being its own region, you can't just travel there on a horse or foot, and you'll have to fast travel there. You can do that the same way you'd fast travel anywhere, by going to the nearest signpost (marked green on your map), then going into the world map from there and selecting Kaer Morhen in the top-right. Then choose any of the signposts in that area to fast travel there.

Of course, there's a lot of other places to see besides Kaer Morhen. If you're enjoying the soft fragrances and rich wines of Toussaint, why not see our guide to romance in the Blood and Wine DLC? Alternatively, you might want to learn how to bring down some of the game's most powerful villains, such as Dettlaff the Elder Vampire.

The witcher 3: how to get to kaer morhen.

To revisit Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3, players must follow all the trails regarding Ciri, after which they will return to the Witchers' keep.

Kaer Morhen is one of the most iconic and well-known locations in the Witcher franchise and also serves as the tutorial area at the start of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . Nevertheless, at the start of Geralt's journey, players do not spend much time in the Witchers' citadel, as they are hurried outside to meet with Ciri and practice combat with Vesemir. Most fans likely think little of the location and are excited to see where the story leads after the appearance of the Wild Hunt in Geralt's dream. However, there will naturally be some who wish to revisit the home of the Witchers and explore the areas blocked off during the tutorial segment.

Fortunately, returning to Kaer Morhen is indeed possible during the main story of The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt . In fact, the Witchers' keep is connected to an entire miniature region where players can explore landmarks, engage in side quests, and collect exclusive loot, such as the Wolven Armor Set. However, Kaer Morhen is not accessible during the early portions of the story. Instead, players are only able to return to this citadel during the main story quest, " Ugly Baby ."

Unlocking Access to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3

To begin " Ugly Baby " and get to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , players must first complete the prerequisite of following all of Ciri's trails in Novigrad, Skellige, and Velen. According to the community-run Witcher Wiki , players must complete the quests: " Disturbance ," " To Bait a Forktail.. .," " The Final Trial ," " No Place Like Home ," and " Va Fail, Elaine ." These six quests in The Witcher 3 must be completed for access to Kaer Morhen to be unlocked for Geralt. Depending on how much side content players engage with during their playthrough, this quest chain can take a few hours to much longer.

After completing " Va Fail, Elaine ," players must speak with the baron's sergeant to let him know that Geralt will be taking Uma, the "ugly baby," back to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . According to gameplay by YouTuber Al Valentyn , players will not return to Kaer Morhen immediately after collecting Uma.

Instead, a long cutscene will play out of Geralt meeting with Emhyr at the capital and then speaking with Yennefer. Eventually, players will arrive in Kaer Morhen, only to be greeted by a forktail monster in The Witcher 3 . After a close call with the beast, fans will enter the fort and leave Uma with Vesemir. Players must then continue onward to complete " Ugly Baby ," after which they can freely travel to and from Kaer Morhen in The Witcher 3 .

Kaer Morhen (Quest) is a M ain Quest  in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt . Main Quests  are the main storyline of the game that can have a major effect towards the endings . Some of these quests may have dialogue choices that will alter the ending of the game.

Kaer Morhen (Quest) introduces some of the Main Characters and serves as the movement and fighting tutorial level.

Every story starts somewhere. This one starts in the guest room at Kaer Morhen, the stronghold of the witchers in the Blue Montains. It starts with Geralt taking a bath, disproving the theory that witchers neglect personal hygiene. But as he's bathing, he is brusauely interrupted by Yennefer - does she ever interrupt in any other way? She reminds him that he was supposed to train with Ciri. What could our hero do but bid the sorceress farewell and descend into the courtyard of the fortress. Litlle did he know this would mark the start of a great adventure. As it turned out, all that happened at Kaer Morhen was but a dream... The kind that wakes even witchers, screaming, a cold sweat on their brow. Geralt crouched by the fire and surveyed the land, a land ravaged by war, signs of battle stretching to the horizon. But he had not chosen this campsite for its view - Yennefer's trail had brought him there...

Rewards for Kaer Morhen (Quest) in The Witcher 3

Walkthrough for the witcher 3 kaer morhen (quest).

After Geralt gets dressed, the player is now given limited control. New players should familiarize themselves with the control scheme and review the tutorials and database. You will find that some menu items have been disabled. If you wish, you may speak to Yennefer, but she unfortunately rejects any of your advances. Don't worry, you will have plenty more opportunities in the future. Walking to the balcony gives you a nice mountain view of Kaer Morhen .

Using your Witcher Senses, a quick peek around the room highlights a key laying on a table. The red color shows unobserved objects and the blue dots show an item than can be picked up or looted. (There is also an option that shows Witcher Sensed objects on your minimap.) The locked doors to your left can now be unlocked with this new key, and you may leave when ready.

Your answers to Vesemir or Ciri have no real consequence, so pick any options to your liking. Ciri will ask if you will join her in a race to the courtyard. Players may skip this option. You are given a chance to train your movement skills with Ciri. The on-screen tutorials will walk you through the short obstacle course. Falling damage is a real danger in this game, so practice caution with falls before you skip ladders. Vesemir will meet you at the bottom.

After some more Dialogue options, again with no real consequence, Vesemir will propose combat training with Geralt . Players may skip this tutorial as well. Vesemir will direct you in each step of combat training. The tutorial covers all basic combat commands (e.g. Attacks, Dodges, and Signs). As the game progresses, combat will require a great deal of variety. Study the movements of your enemies and maintain sharp reflexes. Sheathe your sword to end the training.

Kaer Morhen Interior

  • View history

Inside Kaer Morhen , Geralt recovers his strength and with his friends' help recalls the basics of battle and casting signs . As a young boy, Geralt was transformed into a witcher in the fortress laboratory . Years later, he returns to Kaer Morhen to begin life anew.

For a while now, Kaer Morhen has been an occasional home to a handful of witchers, none of whom bother with the fortress interior. They occupy only a few rooms — the wind occupies the rest. The kitchen is the most important chamber at Kaer Morhen. It is there that the witchers prepare their meals and gather in the evenings to warm their bones by the fire. On especially dreary winter nights, they might also indulge in drinking White Gull , a mildly hallucinogenic potion.

The witchers hardly fret about Kaer Morhen's declining condition. The few left know all too well that they are members of a disappearing caste and rebuilding the fortress would make little sense. Holes and rubble litter the interior — signs of the riot and the passage of time. In the game's Prologue , Geralt can move about Kaer Morhen relatively freely, finding signs of the past glory of the witchers' stronghold and home. Its vast size is revealed as one ventures through its labyrinth of stairwells, corridors and levels.

Kaer Morhen's residents occupy few of its chambers and care little for comfort. This is a witcher's domain. Most of the furniture is rotting while animal hides and weapons are the only decorative accents. Several other chambers are located on the level the witchers still use, and each is furnished differently. These spaces include an evening hall , library and armoury . The names are outdated as the rooms no longer fulfil their functions. The sorceress Triss Merigold occupies by far the most lavish chamber , the only one to contain a solid bed and a few comforts.

The space above Kaer Morhen's gate was designed for its defenders, thus the presence of siege cauldrons and oriels with cruciform openings. Barrels that once contained provisions and ammunition for the garrison now lie smashed, littering the floor. A catapult projectile has knocked a large hole in the chamber wall.
