Homburg is a city in Saarland in Germany. It's midway between Kaiserlautern and Saarbrücken, and 20 km from the border with France. Its main attraction is the huge system of sandstone caves, tunnelled out since the 17th century as raw material for glass-making.
This town isn't the birthplace of the Homburg hat, that's Bad Homburg in Hesse.

See Homburg in Saarland
Homburg is a small town in south-west Germany, and not to be confused with Bad Homberg in Hesse (where the hat of the same name comes from). It is around 25 miles west of Kaiserslautern and 16 miles west of Landstuhl. Homburg lies on the banks of the River Erbach, and it is an ancient market town, having received its first charter in 1330.
What to do in Homburg
The market square is picturesque, surrounded by fine examples of 17 th century buildings. It’s a wonderful starting point from which to explore the town by foot.
Fairly close to this you can find the ruins of the 12 th century Hohenburg Fortress , from which the name of the town is derived. The fortress sits like a crown atop the Schlossberg and it’s ruins have been slightly restored and partially open to the public since 1981.
Close to these ruins you will also find the ruins of the Karlsberg Castle which was destroyed in 1793 (having been built between 1778 and 1785). It was acquired and slightly restored by the Karlsberg Brewery in 1975.

After visiting the castle you might wish to venture into the Schlossberg Caves , which were originally opened in the 17 th century to mine quartz. Children love these caves as they get to wear helmets (adults have to as well of course, for safety reasons). There is a small entry fee (€5 for adults and €3 for children). Call to reserve spaces on the guided tour and to book an English-speaking guide if you need one.
The Karlsberg Brewery is in Homburg, and it’s highly recommended to book a tour to sample the beers produced there. Not to be confused with the Danish brewer Carlsberg, Karlsberg is one of the largest breweries in Germany. The brewery has been handed down through generations in which the current owner is the great-grandson of the brewery’s original founder.

The Homburg Flea and Antiques Market (open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) is one of the biggest in Germany and the biggest in the south-western part of the country. It usually takes place on the first Saturday of each month except in December, which is when the Christmas Market takes place. It too is definitely worth the visit.
The Römermuseum Schwarzenacker , (Roman museum) is an open-air exhibition place where you can see scenes from life in Roman times (closed during December and January). Homburg-Schwarzenacker is a perfect location for such a museum, as Schwarzenacker was at a crossroads of two military and trade routes in the Roman era. These were the routes from Metz to Mainz and from Trier to Strasbourg. Some buildings, such as the optician’s house, have been reconstructed. There is also a beautiful Baroque garden to enjoy, weather permitting. The museum is housed in the Edelhaus, built in the early 18 th century. The museum is closed in December and January, and the entry fee is €5 for adults and €3 for children.
If you enjoy walking and hiking, then the countryside around Homburg is a perfect day out with its beautiful, green valleys and hills.
Where to Eat and Drink
There are wine bars aplenty in Homburg. And if you want to try French, rather than German food for a change, why not go to Petite Chateau which is arguably the best restaurant in Homburg. This popular restaurant serves both French and German food.
If it’s beer you drink with your meals, then you really should head to the Homburger Brauhaus where you can sit outside or inside (depending on the weather) and enjoy the views. Try the dish of the day which is usually delicious and cheap.
Homburg by Night
Why not try Akif’s Nargile Café for a night out? You can try smoking shisha in a traditional Turkish water pipe (nargile) and sample a few cocktails from the extensive range there. Naturally the coffee (with some delicious biscuits) served at Akif’s is worth trying too!
How to get to Homburg
Living in Germany, you know that arguably the best way to travel is by train. For train details, simply click on DB Bahn . To reach by car, it is only about thirty minutes from Kaiserslautern , an hour and a half from Wiesbaden , and two and half hours from Stuttgart .

Ruins of the castle, palace and fortress of Homburg
In the 12th century, the Hohenburg was the seat of the Counts of Homburg, who received city rights for their town at the foot of the castle hill in 1330. After the death of the last Count of Homburg in 1449, the castle and the city fell to the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken. They expanded and fortified the castle with bastions. The French King Louis XIV commissioned Sébastien Prestre de Vauban, his famous master fortress builder, to transform it into a modern citadel.
Der Schlossberg Festung Homburg © Susanne Niklas
The city itself received a city wall for the first time. The street layout of the old town dates from this period (1679-1697). The fortress had to be finally razed in 1697 and 1714.
Since 1981 the ruins on the castle hill have been uncovered and secured. Most of them date back to the fortress period.
The Römermuseum
The Roman Museum Homburg is one of the most famous destinations of the Saarpfalz district & surroundings. The museum stands on a part of the Roman quarter built from the time of Christ. a trading city of ancient Rome. The Römermuseum is open from April to October daily 09.00 – 17.00 except Sundays – 15.00 and in March daily 10.00 – 16.00, closed November thru February .
The Homburger Schlossberg Caves
Europe’s largest red sandstone caves are located below the ruins of the Homburg Fortress on the Schlossberg. Mysterious passages, created by man, lead visitors into imposing domed halls, which have a special charm due to the yellow and red coloring of the sandstone.

3 Bodies Found in Baja California Are Identified as Missing Tourists’
Mexican officials said the identities of two Australians and an American had been confirmed by relatives. The men went missing during a surfing and camping trip.

Reporting from Mexico City
Three bodies that were found in the Mexican state of Baja California last week have been identified as those of three tourists from Australia and the United States who had disappeared days earlier, the Mexican authorities said on Sunday.
The bodies were confirmed to be those of Callum and Jake Robinson, two brothers from Perth, Australia, and Jack Carter Rhoad of San Diego, the Baja California attorney general’s office said in a statement. “The confirmation comes after the victims’ families were able to identify them, without the need for genetic testing,” the statement read.
The Robinsons and Mr. Rhoad had been on vacation, surfing and camping along the coast near the Mexican city of Ensenada, when they disappeared on April 27. The Robinsons’ mother said in a social media post on Wednesday that they had never showed up at an Airbnb they had booked in another coastal town.
Early on Friday, the Mexican authorities recovered the three bodies from a 50-foot-deep water hole near La Bocana beach. A fourth, yet unidentified male body, which prosecutors said had no relation to the case, was also found at the bottom of the hole.
Each of the bodies later identified as those of the tourists had a gunshot wound to the head, said María Elena Andrade Ramírez, the state’s attorney general.
Three suspects have been detained in connection with the killings. One has been charged with forced disappearance. Ms. Andrade Ramírez said he tried to rob the Robinson brothers and Mr. Carter of the pickup truck in which they were traveling. When they resisted, she said, he shot them and later disposed of their bodies.
“Unfortunately, they stayed in an inhospitable place where there was no way to call for help,” Ms. Andrade Ramírez said at a news conference on Sunday.
The other two people being detained have been charged with possession of methamphetamine, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said. She said that there might be more arrests, but that there was no indication that any of Mexico’s organized crime gangs had been involved in the killings.
“The hypothesis so far is that they approached with the intent to seize the pickup truck and attacked the victims,” she said.
Ms. Andrade Ramírez said a burned campsite had been discovered in a remote, isolated area south of Ensenada, about four miles from where the bodies were found. A single shell casing and blood stains were found at the site, and the tourists’ pickup truck, also burned, had been abandoned nearby, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said.
