Celebrity Edge

Debuted in December 2018, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across Europe, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Edge Series ships, park yourself at the Sunset Bar with a spicy margarita every evening – it’s the best spot on the ship to watch for the fabled green flash. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. 10 Scenic Ports You Can Visit on a Canada and New England Cruise

10 Scenic Ports You Can Visit on a Canada and New England Cruise

A Canada and New England cruise is the perfect way to get a taste of the picturesque and historic northeastern US and Canada’s Maritime provinces. Find out about the best ports you can see when you take a cruise to New England and Canada.

The Canada and New England cruise season runs from May until October, though the busy season is between August and October. The window for leaf-peeping in the region is fairly short—from late September into early October when fall foliage is at its peak.

Families with kids generally choose the summer months for a Canada and New England cruise, so take this into consideration when booking. Fall sailings will bring chillier temps, but ships will generally be kid-free.

Canada and New England cruises embark from several East Coast cities, with New York and Boston being the most popular. Some cruise lines also offer sailings from Baltimore, Norfolk, or Fort Lauderdale.

Or start your cruise in Canada—many sail from Montr éal or Qu ébec City.

Most Canada and New England cruises are one-way journeys (though you can always book a back-to-back to turn your voyage into a round-trip sailing).

Various cruise lines stop at different ports in the region, but of course the length of your cruise is a factor in how many ports are on the itinerary.

I’ve highlighted the ten best cruise ports you can visit on a cruise to New England and the Maritimes. Use this guide (written by a native New Englander!) to choose the ports you most want to see. You might be surprised at what you’ll be able to experience in these gorgeous cities!

I’ve also included my favorite shore excursion in each port to help with your planning. Be sure to read to the end to find a short list of must-pack items for your Canada and New England cruise.

Newport, Rhode Island is famous for its Gilded Age mansions, massive summer homes that the ultra-wealthy actually called “cottages”! You can see many of them from the Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) path along the breathtaking Atlantic coast.

You can even take a tour inside some of the majestic estates— The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House, and Rosecliff are all open to the public for tours.

Newport Harbor was home to the America’s Cup international yacht race from 1930 until 1983. Fans of sailing will want to check out the exhibits at the Newport Museum of Yachting. Or, take a sailing lesson at the Newport Yacht Club.

Summertime is festival season in Newport, and it’s not just about the legendary Jazz Festival! Newport is also well-known for its folk and classical music festivals, as well as annual events showcasing flowers, food, wine, beer, and more. Check out Newport’s event calendar for a complete list.

In the mood for a beach day? First Beach, King Park Beach, and Fort Adams State Beach are all free and open to the public.

Boston, Massachusetts

Historic Boston is a very walkable city, and exploring the Freedom Trail on foot is the perfect way to sample its charm. Follow the trail from Boston Common to Charlestown, stopping at fascinating Revolutionary War-era sites. Be sure to take time to try some of Boston’s iconic food along the way!

Shopping fanatics will want to visit Newbury Street, the Back Bay neighborhood’s home to quirky independent boutiques, high-end fashion houses, and everything in between. Start at the Mass Ave end and walk east to reach the Public Garden and Boston Common, a pair of scenic public green spaces.

Whether you’re a Red Sox fan or not, visitors to Boston need to experience a behind-the-scenes tour of historic Fenway Park. Home to the Sox since 1912, Fenway is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball—and it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Get up close to iconic sites around the park including Pesky’s Pole and the Green Monster.

Not a fan of bustling big cities? Take a day trip to nearby Salem , the home of the infamous 17th-century witch trials. The seasonal round-trip ferry will get you to the Witch City in under an hour.

Portland, Maine

Image of Portland Head Light in Maine

Your stop in Portland, Maine takes you to one of the state’s coolest cities for foodies. Downtown Portland alone has over 300 dining venues for you to try, including world-class restaurants with James Beard award-winning chefs. Bon Appétit named Portland its 2018 Restaurant City of the Year !

Discover the beauty of Maine’s coastline by visiting one of the numerous nearby beaches. South Portland’s Willard Beach is perfect for anyone wanting to escape the crowds. Stroll from there to Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, the only caisson-style lighthouse in the US that visitors can walk to.

Or visit Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth’s Fort Williams Park. Just ten minutes from Portland is Maine’s oldest lighthouse, dating to 1791 (its construction was ordered by George Washington!) Then spend the day exploring the park where you can hike, tour the arboretum, and enjoy a casual lunch.

Take a side trip to nearby Freeport for outstanding outlet shopping. Just a 20-minute drive from Portland, you’ll find New England’s favorite bargain shopping destination! Check out hundreds of brand-name outlets and indie boutiques, some housed in lovely brick buildings from the 18th century.

Bar Harbor, Maine

image of Acadia National Park on a Canada and New England cruise

Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, an almost 50,000-acre slice of paradise on and around Mount Desert Island. From spring through autumn, visitors can enjoy coach tours around the park’s paved loop road, or get out and enjoy the scenery on foot, bicycle, or horseback.

Park rangers are on hand to lead group activities (check the ranger program schedule for details), or go off on your own adventure rock climbing, kayaking, or just relaxing by the shore at Sand Beach or Echo Lake.

Or explore Bar Harbor’s charming downtown, full of quaint shops and local restaurants serving up Maine favorites like lobster rolls, clam chowder, and the area’s best craft beers.

Much like Newport, RI, Bar Harbor was also a favorite summer home of the uber-wealthy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tour the waterfront Georgian Revival mansion “La Rochelle” to get a glimpse of turn-of-the-century elegance, just a short walk from the cruise port.

Saint John, New Brunswick

image of Carleton Martello Tower in St. John NB

Don’t be fooled by Saint John’s gritty, industrial appearance when you first sail into port. Past the shipping terminals and oil tanks lie a wealth of cultural and historical sites.

The  Saint John City Market , built in the late 19th century, offers a unique shopping experience with vendors hawking handmade Maritime crafts, art pieces, apparel, and imported goods. Enjoy a meal from one of the numerous on-site restaurants, featuring both local and international cuisine. Or buy some picnic fixings and head over to Kings Square for an alfresco lunch.

Explore the New Brunswick Museum to get a feel for the area’s history, then explore some of the local sites firsthand. The Carleton Martello Tower , a round fortification perched on a rocky cliff, dates to the War of 1812 and was part of the city’s defense strategy until 1944.

Follow the Loyalist Trail through downtown to find historic sites that tell the story of the city’s early settlers. You’ll find the Old Burial Ground at Sydney Street, the Stone Church, The Loyalist House, and Barbour’s General Store, where you’ll learn more about the Loyalists, British subjects who escaped persecution during the American Revolution.

But for many visitors to Saint John, the main attraction is access to the beautiful Bay of Fundy. The bay separates New Brunswick from Nova Scotia and is a stunning backdrop for a range of outdoor activities.

Hike or kayak at Fundy National Park where you’ll find cool, mossy forests, dramatic waterfalls, and breathtaking waterfront cliffs.

If you don’t want to make the 70-mile (112km) ride out to the national park, instead visit the Reversing Falls, just two miles from downtown. This series of rapids on the Saint John River actually changes course twice a day, caused by the bay’s strong tides.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

image of Peggy's Cove Lighthouse in Nova Scotia

Halifax, Nova Scotia was built around the waterfront, and the sea is just as relevant to the city today as it was when it was founded in 1749. With one of the busiest ports on the east coast, the waterfront is certainly a happening place.

Sample the food vendors and restaurants (you’ll find tons of the freshest seafood here!), and be sure to explore the Halifax Seaport Market for local crafts, artisan food products, handmade jewelry, and more. Each September the waterfront hosts the Halifax Oyster Festival , the largest of its kind in Canada.

Canada’s oldest and largest maritime museum, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is also in the waterfront district. Learn about events that affected the city with exhibits about the Halifax Explosion of 1917 and the sinking of the Titanic (cable ships based in Halifax recovered the bodies of over 200 Titanic victims, and many are buried in Halifax). Ship lovers won’t want to miss their exhibit of over 300 ship portraits, the most extensive collection in Canada.

If you’re into military history, tour the star-shaped Citadel (it’s officially named Fort George) to learn about the important part Halifax played in the American Revolutionary War, WWI, and WWII. From May to October, you can even be part of their popular Soldier for a Day program. Get fitted for your uniform, march to the parade square, and learn how to fire a rifle!

Or escape the city to tour the lovely Annapolis Valley. Don’t miss the picturesque fishing village of Peggy’s Cove and its iconic lighthouse. Visit nearby Lunenburg where a replica of its famed racing ship Bluenose is often in port welcoming visitors (the original two-masted schooner was wrecked in 1946).

St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

image of a puffin in St. John's Newfoundland

Not to be confused with the similarly named cruise port in New Brunswick, NL’s capital is the easternmost city in North America, and one of the oldest, too! Appearing on maps as early as 1519, St. John’s is a historic city with lots of small-town charm.

For the best views of St. John’s, head to the top of Signal Hill where Marconi received the very first transatlantic wireless message back in 1901. Tour Cabot Tower, built in 1898 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of explorer John Cabot’s discovery of Newfoundland.

Close by Signal Hill is The Battery, a neighborhood that’s well-known for its colorful “Jellybean Row” houses. These houses, painted in striking shades of blue, red, pink, and yellow, aren’t just on one street—you’ll see their cheerful facades all around the area. The Battery is also home to Anderson House, thought to be the oldest structure in the city.

Looking for an introduction to the local culture and history of St. John’s? The Rooms , a public cultural space that houses the Provincial Museum, the Provincial Archives, and the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, is the place to go. You’ll find an extensive collection of art and artifacts, and an observation deck with some seriously stunning views of the entire harbor.

T he Ocean Sciences Centre , just a short drive from downtown, is the perfect way to learn about Newfoundland’s variety of sea creatures. Reach into the saltwater touch tank to pet a starfish, and see the facility’s resident harp seals from the outdoor viewing platform.

If you visit St. John’s in the warmer months, don’t miss the opportunity to take a whale and puffin-spotting cruise! Humpback and Minke whales are in the area from mid-May through September (peak season is mid-June to mid-August). You can also spot adorable puffins during their nesting season, which coincides with peak whale watching.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Image of Green Gables, Cavendish PEI

The smallest provincial capital in Canada, charming Charlottetown is home to only 36,000 people. But despite its small size, it’s a vibrant seaside city with artisan shops, world-class seafood, a thriving arts and culture scene, and plenty of historic places to explore.

Charlottetown loves nothing more than a festival, and there always seems to be an event going on! The city has a festival for everyone’s taste, from jazz music lovers to fans of blueberries. October visitors won’t want to miss the annual Scarecrow Festival—you’ll see hundreds of scarecrow installations all around town. Check the events calendar to see what’s going on during your visit.

PEI is famous for its picture-perfect beaches, and there are several just minutes from Charlottetown. Brackley Beach, Blooming Point, and Kinlock Beach are among the locals’ faves.

But for many visitors to Prince Edward Island, a visit to Green Gables is an absolute must. The quaint green-and-white clapboard house was the setting for L.M. Montgomery’s 1908 classic Anne of Green Gables , and it’s just a 45-minute drive from the cruise port. Tour the homestead, then head to Avonlea Village, a cute shopping area featuring replica shops and homes from the book series.

Qu ébec City, Qu ébec

Vieux Québec (Old Quebec City in English) is the only North American city north of Mexico City to retain its city walls. Visit Upper Town in this UNESCO World Heritage Site to see the 17th-century ramparts, cobblestone streets, and historic churches. Quartier Petit-Champlain is the place to go for boutique shopping and people watching from one of its streetside cafés.

Stop by the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica, one of the oldest cathedrals in North America, to gaze at its Baroque interior and French colonial-era paintings. Architecture fans will also love a stop at Maison de la littérature, the library housed in the former Wesley Church. Its Gothic windows and old-meets-new style make it a top spot for Insta pics.

Don’t miss the world’s most photographed hotel—Le Ch âteau Frontenac dates to 1893 and looks just like a fairytale castle. Visitors can take a guided tour to learn about its fascinating history.

Québec City is home to several acclaimed museums, including the Musée de la Civilisation . The most-visited museum in the city, here you can find interactive cultural and historical exhibits that encourage discovery. Or, spend the day at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec , home to over 25,000 local works of art.

Want to escape the city for the day and see a stunning waterfall that’s taller than Niagara? Just nine miles northeast of Old Québec is Parc de la Chute-Montmorency. You can climb the winding wooden staircase (or take the cable car) to gaze at the 272-foot (83m) falls from the suspension bridge.

Montréal, Qu ébec

The second-largest city in Canada, cosmopolitan Montréal is a dynamic city with historic sites, a vibrant arts and culture scene, fantastic food, and trendy bars.

Spend some time in Old Montréal, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time with its cobblestone streets and Parisian-style architecture. Check out this area’s Place d’Armes, a public square surrounded by many impressive buildings, including the Notre-Dame Basilica with its stunning vaulted ceiling. Discover the history of the city at Chateau Ramezay Historic Site and Museum, housed in a 1705 building that was once home to one of Montréal’s early governors.

Montréal is a shopper’s paradise, with over 1200 boutiques, department stores, and upscale chains along Rue Sainte-Catherine, the city’s main shopping street. Those looking for a more offbeat shopping experience should head to Boulevard Saint-Laurent for its mix of quirky vintage shops. Or explore the Underground City, a 20-mile (32km) labyrinth of shops, restaurants, and hotels. And yes, the complex is underground, making it a perfect rainy-day destination.

Museum fans will love Montréal’s impressive art, history, science, and culture spaces. The  Montr éal Museum of Fine Arts  features art, archaeology, and antiquities from around the world. Contemporary art lovers will enjoy Musée d’Art Contemporain , and if you’re into science the Biosphere, Planetarium, and Insectarium is the place to be.

Montréal has more restaurants per capita than any other city in North America, and the cuisine is diverse—but you’ll find lots of influences from French, Irish, and Canadian aboriginal cookery. Local faves include poutine (try the many variations at 24-hour spot La Banquise ), the smoked meat sandwich, and the Montréal-style bagel.

Getting around Montréal is easy by the M étro or on a rental bike, or take a walking or bicycle tour to see the best of the city.

What to Do in Seven of My Favorite Canada Cruise Ports

Cruises to Canada rank really high on my list of favorite cruise itineraries. Maybe it’s the scenery or the ever-changing weather or just a particular port. Canada cruise ports offer so much to do, eat and see that you’ll probably forget you’re still in North America.

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse near Halifax, Nova Scotia

Seven Must-See Canada Cruise Ports

There’s a season for cruises to Canada that runs from April through October. Lengths of these cruises generally range from four to 14 nights and may begin or end in Quebec City, Montreal, New York or Boston. If you’re looking for fall foliage cruises, it’s time to start planning. These time-sensitive itineraries sell out well in advance, especially for balcony staterooms.

A handful of Canada cruise ports seem to get more cruise traffic than other smaller Canada cruise ports. I’ll attest that they are all wonderful to visit.

If you’re lucky enough to cruise to really smaller ports, you’ll meet  some of the most friendly people to greet you upon arrival. But since this article is about the top seven Canada cruise ports that are most likely to be on your cruise itinerary, let’s start at the beginning.

What to Do in These Popular Canada Cruise Ports

I’ve put together a list of what I suggest to do at the most visited Canada cruise ports. You can choose to purchase a ship shore excursion or in some cases, simply walk from your ship into town.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

  • A stroll through Sydney right from the cruise terminal. Chocolate lovers: be sure to visit the Cape Breton Fudge Company on Prince Street.
  • Take a drive along the winding Cabot Trail for awesome views of the rugged coastline and through Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
  • To visit the two of the oldest homes in Sydney; the Cosset House Museum and the Jost Heritage House. Both are on Charlotte Street, not far from the Cruise Terminal.

St. John’s, Newfoundland

  • Meander through the narrow streets of The Battery, a quaint neighborhood which still resembles a 17th century fishing village.
  • When the urge to splurge strikes, head up the hill one block from the pier Water Street. Here you’ll find the main shopping area and lots of down-home handicrafts.
  • Check out the panoramic view from Cabot Tower on Signal Hill. You can see out over the water all the way to Cape Spear as well as the city and harbor.

Saint John, New Brunswick

  • Follow the yellow brick road. Actually, it’s a white painted strip called the Harbour Passage that goes from the cruise port all the way to the Reversing Falls Rapids. Not to be missed!
  • Not for the faint of heart is the zipline across the Reversing Falls Rapids, 50 feet above the water. Definitely a white-water rush!
  • Covered bridge fans, (remember, Bridges of Madison County?) should check out the 15-mile covered bridges bicycle tour through the tranquil New Brunswick countryside.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

  • One of the most popular Canada cruise ports, Halifax has great food, easy walking paths and of course, friendly people!
  • Take a bus ride out to Peggy’s Cove to walk through their quaint and colorful fishing village and venture out to one of the most photographed lighthouses in North America.
  • Stroll along the 2.5 mile Harbourwalk, a dedicated waterfront path that takes you through downtown Halifax , past Victorian homes, warehouses. Stop for lunch at a café and enjoy the views.
  • Walk through town to the Citadel and climb to the top for a spectacular view of the harbor. Completed by the British in 1749, the pointed star-shaped fort was a major defense post. There’s a daily canon firing plus you (or your kids) can dress up in period military garb. Tours are available.

Quebec City, Quebec

  • This Canada cruise port is almost like being in France! Tune up your high school French, sit at a café and celebrate the joie de vivre!
  • Head on up to the Haute-Ville (the old section) either on foot (au pied!) or ride the vintage funicular up to the top ($3.50 Canadian). Explore, dine, drink and shop along narrow streets overlooking the harbor.
  • Sign up for Afternoon Tea at the famous castle-like Chateau Frontenac, perched high atop the cliff. Can’t miss it…just look up!
  • With a little pre-cruise planning, you can catch a couple of buses from the port to take you directly to roaring Montmorency Falls. Ships tours go there, too.

  • Have the lunch buffet at the celebrated Queen Elizabeth Hotel on René Lévesque Avenue. Then check out subterranean life beneath the hotel where you’ll find one of the largest underground complexes in the world, nicknamed the Underground City. It’s also home to ViaRail and Amtrak train stations.
  • A great walking city, hoof it from the port over to Old Montreal. Be sure to check out the ornate Basilique Notre Dame de Montreal. China Town is nearby, with interesting shops and of course, lunch!
  • Have a craving for a mile-high juicy corned beef sandwich or a world-renown bagel? Hop a taxi to Schwartz’s Deli on St. Laurent Blvd. Napkins included. From there, take a ride to Montréal’s famous farmer’s market , Jean Talon Market, located in Little Italy. This is FoodieTown.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

  • Anne of Green Gables anything! The story of the orphan girl, adopted and growing up on Prince Edward Island, put Charlottetown on the tourist map. Walk from the cruise port to downtown and browse the “Anne” shops and candy stores.
  • Enjoy a tour out to Prince Edward Island National Park. It’s a wildlife and birder’s paradise. Plus gorgeous coastline, beaches and sand dunes.
  • Foodies take note: Head over to Queen St. or Victoria St. for lunch. Savor local cuisine with regional ingredients. Suggestion: the island fish chowder and lobster cheese casserole are fabulous!

If I had to choose a season to cruise to Canada, it would have to be late fall. While you can never pinpoint when the best week for leaf-peeping will occur, your chances greatly increase from late September through the last cruise of October. Be prepared for abrupt weather changes and dress in layers. If you don’t feel like a ship’s shore excursion, keep in mind that so much of the charm of cruising to Canada can be experienced on a walk from the cruise port.

The best new cruises in the world: 2024 Hot List

By CNT Editors

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Cruise Ship and Ship

It’s inevitable: every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of travelling the globe – to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage – it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali . We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List cruise winners for 2024.

Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity is a premium big-ship cruise brand, focusing on exquisite dining, cutting-edge amenities, Instagram-worthy public spaces chock-full of bespoke art pieces, and avant-garde onboard entertainment. The ship makes passengers feel, in a word, glamorous. Celebrity Ascent’s sumptuously designed interiors are flooded with natural light and evoke an air of playful sophistication that makes a week on board an escape worth cherishing. Passengers may find themselves longing to return for just one more succulent crab claw at Raw on 5, one more martini poured by bottle-spinning bartenders in the Martini Bar, or one more dazzling, acrobatic stage show, in the days following their farewells to this beautiful ship. From around £574 per person for a seven-night sailing. Scott Laird

Emerald Sakara, Emerald Cruises

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August , the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles . Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. (Note that a third ship, the Kaia, has just been announced by the cruise line; it debuts in April 2026, and, for all the early birds, it is now open for bookings.) From around £3,112. Explora I, Explora Journeys

With a showpiece lobby bar, upscale restaurants, and a sultry infinity pool, Explora Journeys' relaxed luxury-resort-at-sea vibe strikes the perfect balance on Explora I. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. From Emporium Marketplace, with its decadent raw bar, to pan-Asian restaurant Sakura, the dining on Explora I is sensational. Marble & Co. Grill is an intimate steakhouse where ageing meats hang in temperature-controlled cabinets. At Anthology, the ship's only supplementary restaurant, guest chefs – such as Claude Le Tohic of San Francisco's O' by Claude Le Tohic – curate sublime tasting menus. There's more: The only Rolex boutique at sea, huge hot tubs, and a shore program that sees some land experiences developed in partnership with revered explorer Mike Horn. From around £564 per person per night. Kerry Spencer

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with a capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map – forgetting your sunscreen , for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the speciality seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crewmembers dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From around £1,818 . Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the Italian cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details – this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevvy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Itineraries from around £420. Stefanie Waldek

A cruise ship in sea.

Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima. There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over-the-top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Breezy class all around. From around £791. Charlie Hobbs

Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilisers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience – Vista’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley , and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. This year, Vista is splitting time between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean; next year, it will venture farther into Europe with ports of call like Istanbul , Stockholm, and Klaipeda, Lithuania. Its sister ship, Allura, sets sail in 2025. From around £2,182. Madison Flager

Scenic Eclipse II, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse. Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs – and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Capable of sailing all over the world, including the polar regions, Scenic Eclipse II has itineraries for every type of traveller. From around £6,025. Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Pursuit, Seabourn Cruise Line

Pursuit is a small, “yacht-like” expedition ship with a distinct green exterior whose destinations range from Antarctica to warmer climes like the Kimberley in Australia. The decadent cabins, bigger than some standard hotel rooms, feel spacious and relaxing, complete with all the subtle touches that make you feel immediately at home. You can hang your evening attire in the walk-in closet and dry your wet swimwear – or damp Arctic expedition gear – in the built-in warming compartment; have sunrise breakfasts or sunset cocktails mixed at the in-room wet bar on your private balcony; and sleep in a plush, queen-sized bed. But what truly sets this cruise apart is the attentive and personable staff who quickly learn your name and personal preferences, providing VIP treatment throughout the journey. From around £8,729. Taylor Eisenhauer

Seven Seas Grandeur, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ports in the Caribbean, the Greek islands , and the Riviera might be the draw, but the all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises produces ships that have travellers looking forward to those days at sea, as its sixth offering, Grandeur, further proves. All of the 372 suites, which start at a roomy 307 square feet, are decorated in calming neutral blues and beige, and feature furnished balconies; most have L'Occitane bubbles for the marble tub. Quiet comfort can also be had in the Serene Spa & Wellness outdoor lounge area, following a massage on a quartz crystal bed that mimics the feel of warm sand. Cravings for a porterhouse or a vegetarian Salisbury steak can be sated by Prime 7, with other venues serving speciality pan-Asian cuisine, French fare, ample buffets, and Italian offerings. Mainstay Compass Rose has been reimagined as a light, airy space where diners breakfast under playfully elegant pillars that resemble crystal trees. Grandeur's whimsy extends to its reception area, where guests can check out Journey in Jewels, the Fabergé egg made specifically for the vessel, where it will remain for the rest of its jewelled ovoid days. The maximum number of 744 guests ensures unhurried service and uncrowded environs as you recover from a sunny day of swimming with Caribbean pigs. From around £3798. Alexandra Sanidad

Silver Nova, Silversea Cruises

A voyage on Silversea’s latest ship, Silver Nova, is one of taste and style. With expansive glass features throughout each of the 11 decks, and an ocean-facing saltwater swimming pool , the ship’s unique asymmetrical design leaves room for adults to run and play (with swank, of course). The Nova’s reimagined culinary experience, SALT (Sea and Land Taste), is the first large-scale, regional restaurant at sea, and acts as an invitation to guests to experience more than an excursion. While initially introduced on Silver Moon, the Nova’s SALT program includes SALT Lab by day: an intimate cooking class with highly acclaimed chefs and regional cuisine recipes inspired by the next destination. With one nightly seating, SALT Chef's Table offers an exclusive and creatively interactive dining experience. It’s all very intimate – as chefs showcase the art of their crafts firsthand, guests peek into a new culture and place before even disembarking. From around £2465. Jessica Chapel

An aerial of a cruise ship in a river.

Viking Aton, Viking River Cruises

In the style of all Viking ships, the Rottet Studio – designed Aton is intended for comfortable and thought-provoking exploration – just look to the book-filled shelves in the cabins, curated by London’s Heywood Hill library, and the revolving door of on-board lecturers (on my trip, an English curator spoke about the evolving depictions of Egypt in 1900s popular art). It should be no surprise that in a destination as rich and storied as Egypt ’s Nile, where the Aton is permanently based, the guides set apart what may read as a quintessential itinerary. On the Pharaohs & Pyramids journey, which takes travellers from the Valley of the Kings, where King Tut lies, to the Great Pyramid of Giza and well beyond over 12 days, esteemed Egyptologists oscillate from translating hieroglyphics on temple walls in real-time to shepherding travellers through modern night markets with endless fervour. On this ship it isn’t just what you see but how much you listen – and the team here, predominantly Egyptian, has much to say. These days, travellers crave perspective-altering experiences more than ever; get on the Aton, and you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime access (until that is, your next Aton sailing). From around £4849. Megan Spurrell

Resilient Lady, Virgin Voyages

Stepping onto Resilient Lady feels a bit like heading to summer camp. The massive vessel is like a giant playground for adults, which is why it draws a fun-loving crowd. Theme night parties, a nostalgic arcade room, plenty of board games, and basketball courts are just a few of the seemingly limitless onboard activities. Compared with its sister ships, the newest Virgin Voyages addition includes upgraded onboard entertainment and exciting new ports of call like the Greek Islands, Bali, and Mumbai . Most of the shows on this specific ship are new to the line, such as Persephone, an interactive performance developed in collaboration with famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes, and Another Rose, an immersive dinner experience. Dining options are abundant on the ship – 20-plus to be exact – and all of them are included with every passenger ticket. Plus, you can’t miss out on a visit to the several different sauna experiences in the Thermal Suite inside the Redemption Spa. From around £1616 . Rachel Dube

World Voyager, Atlas Ocean Voyages

There are superbly comfortable spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows aplenty on World Voyager, the latest vessel from Atlas Ocean Voyages. On an Antarctica expedition, you might watch turquoise icebergs float by from the sauna or the spa’s relaxation room, with its heated loungers perfectly positioned in front of a wall of glass. Back in your cosy stateroom, Champagne and strawberries await, as do the views from a Juliet or walkout balcony. The look throughout the 100 cabins and public spaces is Scandinavian modern, thanks to blond woods, marble floors, plush carpets in geometric patterns, and curvaceous furniture draped in velvety fabrics. In the elegant dining room, the focus is on international cuisine with a farm-to-table slant – think mushroom risotto and smoked duck with chargrilled vegetables. Meanwhile, the multipage cocktail menu beckons guests to a pair of spacious lounges. Blending yacht-style elegance and boutique-resort intimacy, this is a ship where you can make new friends easily but also retreat to a favourite spot to enjoy high tea in peaceful solitude while awaiting details from the crew on the adventures that lie ahead. From around £1495. Celeste Moure
