An included excursion takes you to the famous Gornergrat, traveling on board Europe’s highest rack railway. The views of the Matterhorn from its summit are nothing short of spectacular. Take the Bernina Express train (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to Tirano and back for one of Europe’s most spectacular and breathtaking train rides. Travel across the lofty Bernina Pass via the Swiss Poschiavo area to Tirano in the Italian Valtellina, witnessing an array of beautiful mountain streams, glaciers, and alpine scenery along the way. This tour is a decent trip for the value. The hotels were mediocre - not bad but not great , as were the breakfasts. The main thing that people should know is that there is a lot of walking and changing of trains. Our tour guide did a good job of getting everyone off and on the trains and no one got lost but we all anticipated that we would board a train every morning, go to a city, leave our stuff at a hotel and then tour the city.

Every day there were several trains - which provided beautiful views of the country and the trains were very nice. But if you had things like a lap top of a tablet that you did not want to put in your luggage - which was taken to the next hotel - you had to lug it. This was not great when we stopped at cities during the day. There was only one city where we had a bus from the train station to the hotel. In the rest we walked and a few times it was a bit of a hike. So be prepared to walk. The guide did get a cab for a couple of people who were struggling but the amount of walking should have been explained.

Food in Switzerland is very expensive. You will spend $30 for an average dinner - nothing special. I had an $18 tuna sandwich. Cokes and soft drinks are around $5.00 and tee shirts and hats are also very expensive. (None of my friends got gifts.)

We had a couple of included dinners - once again not bad but nothing great.

My friend ordered a bowl of soup on the train. They brought the soup and some bread but charged her 90 cents for some butter.

So if you take this trip, travel extremely light, bring a lot of money for food and remember if you can't put it in your bag you have to lug it all day.

The optional excursions were ok but I'm not sure they were worth the money.

We paid extra for a air port transfer and at the last hotel you could have gotten the hotel shuttle for three francs. The hotel transfer from Cosmos was nothing special - like they didn't take you to the desk or anything - just dropped you off. So I'm sure the hotel shuttle would have been the same.

My major point is that while this was a decent tour for the money, Cosmos should have given a better explanation. Once you got to the city, there were no tours of the city to give you an overview. The guide did a decent job, but a city tour by bus would have been nice.

Hi cellenc, if you came to this forum before paying for Cosmos tour, you would be selecting your preferred hotels ,meals and excursions at your own time, and meet your budget too. You may not need hotel shuttles even.

As for city bus tours, very few Swiss city would be big or expansive enough to warren a bus tour. Most city are on gradients which means steps, narrow and winding streets, and cobble stones. Old town worth a tour are mainly pedestrian precincts. One might be better buying a city zonal pass for a day, and all transports are hop-on-hop-off anyway.

In many hotels the in-room safe deposit box has plug for your laptop.

And be aware that in Europe , air-conditioning may be illegal in some localities.

My problem is that Cosmos didn't tell us about the walking and lack of air conditioning.

Well, walking is to be expected. So is changing trains. For us this is obvious.

Regarding the AC: we are experiencing unusual hot weather. That said, people usually cope just fine without. Just keep windows closed during the day, and open at night.

We visit Vineyards for wine tastings, farms for cooking lessons and lunches and dinners in authentic Italian restaurants. All assisted by a friendly, informative tour director. First class holiday

Excellent in every respect

I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again

A wonderrful experience

WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.

Old South &Florida tour

Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can

The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. Munich, Germany to Salzburg, Austria

Bavaria is known as the most beautiful region in Germany and Austria, and if you spend even just a few minutes there, it’s easy to see why. This part of Europe is a true fairytale, with snowy mountain peaks, charming alpine cabins, and rushing rivers. And while road trips here are fun, the train ride between the two major cities, Munich and Salzburg, lasts about two hours and provides some of the best views of the Bavarian Alps and surrounding villages.

Sarajevo to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

The Balkans aren’t known to have an amazing rail system. However, one train ride that is a must on any visit to the area is the two-hour journey between Sarajevo and Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Oslo to Bergen, Norway

Athens to Meteora, Greece

When you picture Greece, sandy island beaches and vibrantly blue water probably come to mind. But that’s not all there is to the country. It has epic mountains as well. The four-hour ride (but budget longer, Greek trains are notoriously slow and late) from Athens to Meteora takes you through the heart of the peaks and ends in the perfect spot for a walking adventure. You can hike from the main towns of Kalambak or Kastraki to the various monasteries that dot the mountains.

Luxembourg, Luxembourg to Cologne, Germany

No, the tiny country of Luxembourg isn’t part of Germany, but it is right next door and ideally located for terrific train rides across Europe. The one from the capital city, also called Luxembourg, to Cologne takes approximately three and a half hours and usually requires a change in Koblenz. But it will take you along the Moselle River, dotted with vineyards, castles, and adorable towns that make the ride fly by.

Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland

The West Highland Line is the most picturesque in all of the United Kingdom. You’ll follow the Clyde River into the country and through Trossachs National Park and Rannoch Moor. The five-and-a-half-hour journey is perfect for those looking to see a bit of Scotland in a short amount of time.

Kristinehamn to Gällivare, Sweden

The most fantastic train ride in all of Sweden (and that’s saying something in this country) is this just-over 800-mile journey through the interior. The summer-only route operates between mid-June and late August annually. You’ll see the verdant forests of Sweden and the breathtaking backcountry dotted with wildflowers.

Jesenice, Slovenia to Trieste, Italy

The Bohinj Nostalgia Train is a three-and-a-half to four-hour ride through some of the prettiest parts of Slovenia. Visit the breathtaking Vintgar Gorge and the imposing Julian Alps before crossing into Italy. It’s the perfect way to see the area without a car!

Zermatt to St. Moritz, Switzerland’s Glacier Express

Switzerland is known for top-notch public transportation, which is efficient and charming. It is not cheap, but the smooth ride and out-of-this-world window views are absolutely worth it. The all-day, eight-hour Glacier Express will take you through the heart of Europe’s most famous Alps, the Rhine Gorge, and multiple tunnels.

French Riviera Regional Line

The Cote d’Azur was legendary long before Emily in Paris  visited the coast. And while cruising around in a convertible might be stylish, it’s not exactly realistic for most visitors. Plus, one of the best ways to see the South of France is by a regional RER train. Sure, it’s not the super quick TGV, but that just means you’ll see more of the lovely area. Lucerne to Interlaken, Switzerland
