When is the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica?

Cahuita National Park Wildlife, Cahuita, Costa Rica

Hermit crabs in Cahuita , Costa Rica

The best time to visit Costa Rica depends on your preferences and the experience you’re seeking. Generally, most people visit Costa Rica during the dry season, which is from December to April. This is when the weather is sunny and perfect for enjoying the rainforests and beaches. It’s a busy time for tourism, so book your accommodations in advance.

The rainy season lasts from May to November when you can find more budget-friendly options. Even though it’s known as the rainy season, it doesn’t rain all the time, and the temperatures are still warm. In June and July, the rain becomes lighter, and the rainforests become alive.

If you’re heading to the Northern Plains and the Caribbean coast, it’s humid all year round, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 °C (70-80°F). The North Pacific is less humid, but it can get even hotter during the dry season. Whether you prefer the sunny, dry season or the more budget-friendly rainy season, Costa Rica has something to offer year-round.

Is Costa Rica Vegan-friendly?

Costa Rica is a perfect vegan destination. You can find several vegan-friendly resorts across the country, particularly in popular destinations such as Manuel Antonio, San José, Puerto Viejo, and Santa Teresa.

Is Costa Rica Vegan Friendly?

Costa Rica is known to be a vegan-friendly paradise and a top plant-based destination. The country offers a wide range of all-inclusive vegan resorts in Costa Rica, particularly in popular tourist areas and larger cities like San José, Puerto Viejo, Manuel Antonio, and Santa Teresa.

Moreover, Costa Rica’s cuisine is heavily influenced by fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, beans, and rice, which are all staples of a vegan diet.

When it comes to vegan food in Costa Rica, traditional dishes like gallo pinto (rice and beans), casado (a plate with rice, beans, plantains, and salad), and ceviche (made with vegetables or heart of palm) can be easily adapted to be vegan-friendly.

However, it’s always a good idea to communicate your dietary preferences and requirements clearly when dining out to ensure that your meal is prepared vegan-friendly.

Some smaller, more traditional restaurants may have limited vegan options; but overall, eating vegan in Costa Rica shouldn’t be too hard.

Vegan Guide to Costa Rica: Pineapples, Plantains, and More!

Looking for some travel inspiration? Costa Rica should be top of your list. The small Central American country is home to stunning beaches, volcanoes, and diverse wildlife. Jungle makes up roughly one-quarter of the country.

Worried about the environmental impact of traveling abroad? Costa Rica could help ease your guilt, the country is extremely environmentally-friendly. Since 2014, all of Costa Rica’s energy has come from 99 percent renewable sources. In 2017, it set the goal of becoming completely plastic-free by 2021—if it achieves this, it will be the first country in the world to do so. In summer 2018, it laid out its goal of becoming completely carbon-neutral by 2021.

Still concerned? Offset your carbon footprint and eat vegan food on your journey.

The celebrity chef—who owns a string of vegan restaurants and businesses around the world—will oversee all aspects of food preparation in the restaurant. Kenney said in a statement, “Costa Rica is abundant with fresh aromatic fruits and vegetables year-round, and aligns perfectly with my roots and values. “

If you end up staying at the IGLOO Beach Lodge Hotel, you’ll be in the perfect spot to explore Manuel Antonio National Park. The area is renowned for its beauty and biodiversity; it’s home a wide range of tropical plants and endangered wildlife, including white-faced capuchin monkeys. To find out more about the sanctuary’s work, tourists can see it on the Netflix documentary “Dogs.”

3. Puerta De Jade Vegetarian and Vegan B&B

Puerta de Jade B&B is situated near the Poas Volcano, an active volcano—which has erupted 40 times since 1828, most recently in 2017—in Poas National Park. The park is home to hiking trails with panoramic views. It’s one of the easiest spots to view the cloud forest that surrounds Costa Rica’s capital city of San José.

Puerta de Jade—a small, quiet B&B with only four bedrooms—serves purely vegetarian and vegan food for breakfast, dinner, and lunch. It’s ideal for nature lovers, says Vegan Travel, thanks to its large garden. The website says, “you wake up with bird songs and feel the fresh air at 1700 meters altitude, with the Poas volcano view.”

The guesthouse also offers guided meditation classes and vegan and vegetarian cooking lessons.

It offers them a safe and comfortable environment to live out the rest of their lives in.

The sanctuary relies on donations and volunteers to survive and is also funded by its daily tours of the sanctuary.

Veganism In Costa Rica

La « Pura Vida » is Costa Rica’s unofficial national motto. You can say “la Pura Vida” to say hello, goodbye, or even thank you. This shows you just how important the clean, good life is to Costa Ricans. Fitness as well as a healthy lifestyle have become central to many. As a consequence, the vegan community has also been growing by leaps and bounds in the last 5 years.

Vegan Food in Costa Rica

Costa rica vegan food

You might think that you’d get bored of rice and beans after a while but the magic thing is that not one of these medleys tastes the same and different veggies will be served with it, for a nice variety. Make sure you try the avocados, among some of the best in Central America.

Bananas available in costa rica markets

Don’t forget to go to the open markets, usually open all week except Sundays. Though as far as proteins are concerned, you should be eating enough rice and beans to fulfill your daily quota. Enjoy La Vida Pura! As a vegan you should have it easy here.

Enriched with culture and biodiversity, Costa Rica is more than just your average country. This Central American country is a land of rugged terrains, rich mountains, and a huge rainforest that spans roughly across a quarter of the country, teeming with wildlife. But when a country is so diverse and in touch with nature, nothing matters more than keeping its relationship with mother nature intact. And you’ll find that a lot of Costa Rican accommodations are going eco-friendly.

Costa Rica is home to 20 beautiful birds that will catch your eye with their bright colors and sweet songs. This peaceful place is great for anyone who loves watching birds and enjoying nature.

While not as well known as the parrots or brightly colored birds of the list the Jabiru stork is one worth seeing. Standing nearly 4 feet tall with a black featherless head the Jibaru is an unmistakable bird. These birds are well known for building nests up to 6 feet in diameter. Sadly it is estimated there are less than 100 individuals in costa Rica, seeing one should be cherished. With hard work and conservation, we can all hope their numbers rebound.

Slutty Vegan Founder Blessing Atlanta High School With Sponsored Prom

Pinky Cole Hayes is covering prom for Atlanta's Benjamin E. Mays High School.

Slutty vegan founder Pinky Cole Hayes is giving the gift of prom to one lucky high school in Atlanta.

The Pinky Cole Foundation is blessing students at Atlanta’s Benjamin E. Mays High School with a fully covered prom that includes prom attire, catering, decorations, a DJ, and souvenirs, WSB-TV reported. Cole Hayes was present at the school on April 22 to announce the donation just ahead of the prom on April 27.

“I was the prom queen at my high school, and I cherish the memories I created at my prom,” she said. “It is important for me to support my community by helping people have experiences that will impact them for the rest of their lives, and I hope that my contribution does just that.”

A staff member from the public school, named after the renowned educator, author, and civil rights activist, Benjamin Mays, expressed their appreciation for Cole Hayes’ act of kindness.

“Gratitude is the fairest blossom that springs from the soul. We extend our deepest appreciation to The Pinky Cole Foundation and Slutty Vegan for their generous sponsorship of the Benjamin Elijah Mays 2024 prom,” Dr. Lizzette Kenly, ELA Department chairperson and Prom Coordinator at Mays High School said.

Based in Atlanta, The Pinky Cole Foundation frequently gives back to the Black community through financial support to help amplify entrepreneurial pursuits and fight poverty. Cole Hayes launched the foundation in 2019 to empower young people of color through grassroots and local initiatives that equip them with the skills needed for successful risk-taking, innovation, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Her philanthropy efforts and activism include launching PETA’s Push for Food Justice, providing life insurance policies to 25,000 Black men, paying rent for local businesses in need, and covering the full tuition of 30 Clark Atlanta students.

COSTA RICA'S LEADING ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEWSPAPER

Costa Rica, UAE Sign Economic Partnership Agreement

Why costa rica farmers are going out of business, netflix spends $1.2m on security for costa rica filming, costa rica denies receiving asylum seekers from the uk, costa rica among nations targeted for uk’s asylum seeker deportation plan, birds of costa rica: meet the gray-headed kite.

Vincent Losasso

What do you get when you combine the broad wings and big body of a raptor with a little curved beak on a small dove-like head? You get the gray-headed kite.

The gray-headed kite (Leptodon cayanensis) is known as the gavilán cabecigris in Spanish. It’s one of the 205 members of the Accipitridae (pronunciation here ) family which is a diverse group of birds of prey characterized by keen vision, sharp talons, and hooked beaks.

Adult gray-headed kites don’t really resemble any other bird in Costa Rica. Three characteristics make it stand out. First, its coloration. It has its namesake gray head, a white chest, and black wings. All solid colors without any overlap. Second, it has a little bean head that, to me, looks like it belongs on a dove, not a bird of prey. Third, it has short legs which often make it look like its belly is sitting on the branch while perching.

Juvenile gray-headed kites are not nearly as easy to identify. That’s because they come in three different color phases that all look very different. There’s a pale morph, an intermediate/rufous morph, and a dark morph. It turns out that the reason for this variety is pretty fascinating.

The juveniles are exhibiting mimicry, which isn’t very common in birds of prey. Each color form resembles a different, larger, scarier bird of prey. For example, the pale morph resembles a black-and-white hawk-eagle and the dark morph looks like a black hawk-eagle. They gain some level of protection from predation by imitating these larger species.

Gray-headed kites are another species with a large range but tend to be uncommon within that large range. Their territory stretches from Mexico to northern Argentina. In Costa Rica, they’re found along the forested lowlands and foothills on both the Pacific and Caribbean slopes.

These birds prefer more mature forests where they perch in the canopy or on the forest edge looking for prey. They eat a variety of prey including reptiles like snakes and lizards, other birds, taking eggs and nestlings of small bird species, and insects, especially the brood of wasps and ants.

I haven’t had the good fortune of spotting a gray-headed kite yet, but I have recorded them a few times with my camera traps. Within the last two months I recorded one in Pérez Zeledón where it settled onto a log above a stream and another investigating a waterhole in northern Guanacaste. A few years ago I had some cameras in Osa where I recorded a gray-headed kite frequently bathing in a wallow made by collared peccaries . Take a look at a few of those clips in the video below and get to know the gray-headed kite.

Costa Rica News

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

costa rica vegan tour

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

costa rica vegan tour

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

costa rica vegan tour

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

costa rica vegan tour

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

costa rica vegan tour

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

costa rica vegan tour

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

costa rica vegan tour

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.
