A guide to Horseshoe Bay Bermuda for Cruisers

Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermuda may be the the most beautiful beach you’ll ever see. With its pale pink sand, stunning clear blue water and striking rock formations lining the beach, it’s understandable why this free public beach, is so popular with tourists and cruisers visiting Bermuda.

We love Bermuda, and have been here 6 times, so I’ll be going through the questions that many people ask and want to know about Horseshoe Bay Beach.

Horseshoe Bay Bermuda Tips

How to get to horseshoe bay from dockyard.

If you’re coming to Bermuda by cruise ship , you’ll most likely be docked at the large cruise port, King’s Wharf, also known as Dockyard. Over the years, Bermuda’s cruise port has built up and it’s pretty easy to get from here to many sights and beautiful beaches in Bermuda.

Bermuda Currency Tip

Many people ask about the local currency. The good news is that Bermuda dollars and US dollars are 1:1 and pretty much taken interchangeably. No need to get any Bermudian dollars, unless you want to, as it is pretty.

Transportation options from Dockyard to Horseshoe Bay Beach

There are several ways you can get to Horseshoe Bay Beach, including public bus (which is safe and a great way to travel), scooters and mini electric cars, mini-buses or shuttles or taxis.

The easiest way, in my opinion, is to use the mini-bus/shuttle to get to Horseshoe Beach, or even one of the other, perhaps quieter, beautiful Bermuda beaches that are close by.

Bermuda Dockyard King's Wharf Norwegian Escape

Bus: Bus #7 will drop you off at the road just above the beach. Buses run about every 30 minutes, but do verify the current bus schedule .

Something to keep in mind is that Horseshoe Bay Beach is located at the bottom of a fairly steep hill. We’ve gone by bus several years ago and it was fine for us. However, for some with mobility issues, or anyone who is tired at the end of the day (us!!), other options may just be more convenient.

One way fares/tokens are $4.50.

Tip: Bus and ferry passes are available right in dockyard. If you’re there for 2 or 3 days, consider a multi-day pass.

Mini-buses/shuttle

I recommend heading over to Horseshoe Bay by mini-bus. These are actually van style shuttles that fit about 15 people per ride. There will be several right in Dockyard close by to your cruise ship.

Something to keep in mind is that they will wait and fill up the shuttle. In our case, we’ve always gone when it’s been busy, so we’ve only waited 5-10 minutes. However, if you go on a less busy day, a taxi might be a better option if you’re pressed for time.

These shuttles will bring you all the way down the road to the beach. There will be several vans lined up to take you back to the cruise port, so no need to worry.

Fare is 7$ per way.

Tip: If you like some Bermuda commentary, sit up close to the front near the driver. We’ve been lucky at times where we’ve had almost a mini tour with tons of great local Bermuda information.

Other transportation options  include renting a scooter or electric car.

Renting an electric car is something new this year, as far as I can see, so I welcome any information if you’ve done it. Unfortunately almost every time we’ve been to Bermuda, we’ve heard of a horrific scooter accident often involving cruisers. For that reason, I would stay away from this.

Facilities at Horseshoe Beach

There are ladies and men’s washrooms to the right when you enter the beach. They are clean but not fancy (it is a public beach). There are some “foot” showers on the outside and the shuttle drivers will appreciate you getting the sand off your feet before you get in.

What can you eat or drink Horseshoe Bay Beach?

There is a very casual restaurant on your right as you enter the beach area. It has American style foods such as burgers and hot dogs made on a grill, and chicken nuggets. They also had some jerk chicken.

There’s a bit of seating inside and some picnic tables nearby, as well as a little patio area right in back where you can sit and eat.

Rum Bum Beach Bar

If you’ve been wondering, “Where I can get a Rum Swizzle?” , you can get one here.

Although it was 10$ and served in a large plastic cup, it was SO GOOD! I’m a fan of Rum Swizzles and in Bermuda, why not?

If you’re feeling like a beer or frozen cocktail, they have these too. People were pretty happy with the margaritas too.

Do you know what was really nice about the Rum Bum Beach Bar? They had live musical entertainment. There was a very talented local steel band player that provided just the right atmosphere. I suggest you take a short beach break and check it out.

Horseshoe Beach Chair Rentals

We’ve actually never rented chairs while at Horseshoe Bay, as the sand is very soft and clean, however loungers and umbrellas are available to rent.

The price for rentals was $22 per lounger an $15 for an umbrella when we went . A set of 2 loungers and an umbrella is $50.

The people who work on the beach are very courteous and will set them up for you where you’d like to sit.

Other Beach Rentals

Other beach rentals include a tent, boogie board and snorkel equipment.

Tip: Consider bringing your own snorkel gear from home.

About Horseshoe Beach

When you arrive at Horseshoe Bay Beach, if you’re there with a cruise ship, you may find that it’s quite crowded. However, there are spots and hideaways where you can get away from the crowds if you want to.

The main part of the beach, to your left as you enter, will be a good stretch of sand, in sort of a horseshoe shape. The water can be a bit wavy in this area, but usually not overly so. Most people will sit within this area.

Hidden gem: Our preference is to walk all the way to the left, past the first couple of rock formations. It can be a good idea to bring mesh water shoes if you have them, as you may be walking into a foot or two of water to get around to the best spots.

There are a couple more secluded beaches just after the first set of two of rocks. There are even some small caves and large rocks you can climb. It’s truly stunning.

Tip: If you want gorgeous, “Instagrammable”photos, this is where you need to go!

horseshoe bay beach pink sand

Horseshoe Bay Cove or Baby Beach

Rather than heading left, if you like much calmer water, you’ll probably enjoy Baby Beach or Horseshoe Bay Cove, to the right when you get to the beach.

This is a great area if you have children, if you want to snorkel, or if you prefer shallower and calmer waters. This part of Horseshoe Beach is shielded from the rest of the beach and by several rocks lining the cove.

We’ve seen small fish swim around us and little crabs climbing on the rocks. It’s a really nice spot to do some snorkeling.

Bermuda Horseshoe Baby Beach

Is there a lifeguard at Horseshoe Beach?

Yes, Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the only public beaches in Bermuda that has a lifeguard, at least during high season.

Is the Bermuda sand really pink?

I wondered this myself when we first visited Bermuda a few years ago. Let me tell you, all photos in this post are mine and unfiltered.

Yes, the sand is pink.

However, it is a a hue between blush pink and peachy pink and it’s subtle. I’ve noticed it’s more apparent on sunnier days rather than overcast, which seems true of all colors (they appear brighter with sunlight).

My understanding as to why Bermuda’s beaches have pink sand is that there are tiny organisms called red foraminidera that live under coral reefs. When they die, their shells get washed to the shoreline and mix with the sand and tiny and all together it creates that gorgeous pale pink color Bermuda is famous for!

Horseshoe Bay and Warwick Long Bay are said to have the “pinkest” beaches in Bermuda.

This looks like such a great place to visit! I’ve only been on one cruise, but the thing I really liked about it was how relaxing it was. I’m definitely hoping to do another cruise again someday, and when we get to Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay Beach will definitely be top on my list. I need to see that pink sand on a sunny day so I can really appreciate it!

' src=

If you enjoyed cruising, Bermuda is a bit special. You can often stay on the island for 3 days, so its a nice time to explore, while still enjoying that relaxing cruise ship life.

I hope you get to Horseshoe Bay sometime, it definitely is a super pretty beach.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!

We leave today for our 28th visit to Bermuda. While horseshoe is crowded and there are other equally beautiful beaches, it is the place we seem to always go to because of the facilities and restaurant. Besides, the reason that we go to Bermuda is the water, so we don’t spend much time on the beach.

I might add that if you want to go to Horseshoe bay on the last day and are nervous about making it back to the ship on time, there are usually excursions to horseshoe Bay on the last day on most cruise lines. At least you don’t have to worry about making it back on time if you’re on a ship sponsored excursion. Costs a little more, but removes the “dock runner” anxiety.

Nice article!

That’s fabulous!28 times!! Wow! I get that Bermuda love.

That’s actually such a good tip for cruisers. I really appreciate you mentioning it – very smart to make use of that short last day by booking a ship excursion!

Thanks for your kind words and enjoy your time in Bermuda!

For anyone wanting to rent a chair and umbrella, keep in mind that they have a limited quantity. If you arrive later on a busy day they may have none to rent. That was the experience that my husband and I had. We are in our 70’s and we have to have shade. My husband produced a five to the beach attendant and said if you can get us an umbrella it will be worth your while. He came back in less than a minute with an umbrella and received a twenty.

That’s a good point. It does get busy there, so going early is best

Take a Ride on the Magical Flying Chair in Roatan

Mahogany bay cruise center and the flying chair in roatan..

I don’t fly. Ever. When the opportunity to “fly” from Mahogany Bay Cruise Center at the port in Roatan, Honduras to the beach presented itself, I was determined to sally forth. Come along with me in this short video as I take a ride on the flying chair. The view is spectacular!

Unique to the Caribbean, the Magical Flying Chair in Roatan is the first chair lift to transport riders from a cruise ship terminal directly to the beach. The beach chair lift is only one of the many features of Carnival Cruise Lines’ $62 million Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, which welcomed its first cruise ship, Carnival Cruise Lines’ 2,124-passenger Carnival Legend, on November 20, 2009.

Magical Flying Chair at Mahogany Bay Roatan Honduras

The “Magical Flying Chair”in Roatan takes cruise ship guests on an exhilarating 10 minute ride suspended sixty-seven feet above lush treetops, grassy flats and crystal clear water. To board the new beach chair lift system, look for the pink kiosk at the Welcome Center.

The chair lifts let guests off directly on the sand at Mahogany Beach. You can easily spend the day there with the complimentary lounge chairs, floats, a beach volleyball court and myriad watersports opportunities. There are also eight exclusive cabanas for rent offering private beach access.

Mahogany Beach Roatan Honduras

The galvanized steel lift chairs can accommodate up to four adult riders at a fee of $14 each for unlimited use throughout the stay in port. The fee for children ages 4-12 years old is $8 for unlimited use, under 3 years is free. If you get thirsty or hungry, there’s a 17,000 sq. ft restaurant and beverage center with live music and open seating.

Back at the cruise port, officially named, “The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center” there are over a dozen shops (Del Sol, Diamonds International are there of course,) a few local shops, a gelateria, a coffee stand featuring (what else?) Honduran coffee and a few restaurants.

Ships from other cruise lines that are owned by Carnival Corporation also visit Roatan Mahogany Bay. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships, too, include Roatan on a handful of sailings.

To the best of my knowledge, you can also purchase a one-way or roundtrip ride from the kiosk at the boarding area, right off the dock. Otherwise, I would suggest contacting your travel agent or Carnival to clear up any questions you may have.

How do you book this? We see it is $49 through Carnival but only $14 on the website. But the website says book throughout carnival!

Visiting a cruise line’s private island? Don’t make these 11 mistakes

Fran Golden

Private islands operated by cruise lines are beautiful patches of vacation paradise with white-sand beaches, lounge chairs for everyone, refreshing tropical drinks that come to you and activities like water sports and zip lines. Don't create trouble in paradise by making an epic vacation blunder that will leave you with beach-day regrets.

These 11 common mistakes trip up both newbies and experienced cruisers when visiting popular private islands on Caribbean and Bahamas cruises . Be forewarned so you can live out your island fantasies without a single travel nightmare.

Staying on board

cruise ship beach chair

Some vacationers new to cruising do not consider themselves "beach people" and assume there is no reason to go ashore at a private island. In reality, island days are not only about sitting on the beach; you're missing out if you stay on board.

Tours on the water abound, whether you want to explore via kayak, glass-bottom boat or personal watercraft. You can wade with stingrays or go fishing. In some locations, you can even take tours to nearby islands.

For example, on Carnival Corporation 's Half Moon Cay, horseback riding in the surf is a popular attraction. Tours of the island's farm include learning about local plants and agriculture. Nature hikes bring travelers to ruins of limestone fishing huts from the late 18th century and spots to view the island's nesting seabird population.

On Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay , you will find over-the-top attractions, such as the tallest waterslide in North America and the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, plus zip lines and balloon rides.

For all tours, advance bookings are required.

Walking to the beach

Your cruise line's private island might be bigger than you think. It can be a long trek on boardwalks or sandy roads to the beach from where you disembarked the ship or tender. Don't make the mistake of walking to the far end of the beach with all your gear when some cruise lines will provide open-air trams to take you where you want to go.

If you want to stretch your legs on purpose, check the island map for suggested hikes, or rent bikes to explore on two wheels. (You'll likely need to make reservations for bikes in advance.)

Grabbing the first beach chair you find

It's human nature to grab the first empty beach chair you see, but if you pick a lounge chair close to the pier, you'll be in the noisiest, most crowded part of the island. Remember that more than one ship can visit a private island simultaneously, so those empty spots near you will fill quickly. Walk away from the ship (and the music-blaring bars), and you'll be rewarded with more peaceful surroundings.

Additionally, some islands have more than one beach, so don't settle for the first one you find. Disney Cruise Line 's Castaway Cay , for instance, has beaches earmarked for families and teens; Serenity Bay, a heavenly mile-long stretch on the island's north side, is reserved for adults.

Tip: If you're planning to snorkel from the beach, you also will want to get away from the crowds for a more undisturbed look at marine life.

Delaying your cabana or villa reservation

Cruise lines rent private open-air beach (or pool) cabanas for hundreds of dollars per day and private air-conditioned beach villas for more than $1,000. These exclusive retreats get you VIP treatment and extra perks on your private island visit. Despite the high price tag, they are highly sought after and sell out fast.

Since cabanas sell out so quickly, the key is to reserve them as soon as you can book excursions for your cruise. Priority is sometimes given to suite guests. If you procrastinate, your dreams of relaxing on an uncrowded beach or enjoying lunch served by a butler will likely be dashed.

Waiting to reserve water sports equipment

cruise ship beach chair

On your cruise line's private island, you'll find shacks stocked with a limited number of floating beach mats, snorkels and fins, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and other water toys. To ensure you get what you want, reserve the equipment before your sailing or while you're still on the ship. You don't want to be that parent who has to tell your kid there are no more floats available.

Assuming there's free shade

Cruise lines promise free lounge chairs on their private islands but don't guarantee fee-free shade. If your cruise line's beaches offer beach umbrellas, they might not be free. Clamshell covers for lounge chairs always cost extra and are best reserved in advance because they often sell out.

A free option is pulling your beach chair over to the shade of palm trees, where you might also find hammocks. However, these shady spots could already be claimed by clamshell rentals or only be accessible if you trek all the way down the beach. That said, you can escape the sun in shaded bar and buffet areas — though they're not necessarily the most scenic spots for lounging.

Not staying for the barbecue

Some people head off the ship in the morning, find themselves bored by noon and go back to the ship for lunch. These folks miss the fun of having lunch at picnic tables or taking their meals to their beach chairs. (Yes, we know sand could be involved, but it's still an experience.)

If you've never sampled the fare at a private island barbecue, skipping this alfresco dining opportunity is a mistake. Depending on the cruise line, you'll find grilled burgers, hot dogs, jerk chicken, ribs, steaks, corn and an assortment of salads, desserts and fresh fruit — all served buffet-style from an open-air pavilion.

Also, don't make the mistake of assuming lunch on a private island is always the same. Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America both send ships to Half Moon Cay, but the sister cruise lines offer different beach barbecue menus. Both are worth a taste.

Related: Cruise ship restaurant nirvana: The 10 best meals you can have at sea

Missing the alternative lunch options

cruise ship beach chair

While the island barbecue is a staple of the private island experience, some destinations offer alternative lunch options that you shouldn't ignore. Make sure you know about all your food choices before digging in because you might miss out on a special meal.

For instance, Holland America has a venue serving up grilled lobster and conch stew for a fee. Norwegian appeals to gourmands with complimentary food trucks serving tacos, ceviche and pulled pork sandwiches. On MSC Cruises ' Ocean Cay , you can buy a lobster roll and indulge in ice cream served in a fish-shaped cone (also for a fee).

In addition to its two complimentary barbecue venues, Royal Caribbean 's Perfect Day at CocoCay offers three Snack Shack outlets, an a la carte menu at Captain Jack's bar and restaurants exclusive to cruisers who pay for access to the Coco Beach Club and Hideaway Beach.

Wandering into private staff areas

To maintain the beaches and other facilities, your cruise company employs dozens of staff who might live on the island. (Other island workers are usually locals who come over for the day.) Their village area, which includes a kitchen, power generator, water and sewage plants, recreation hall and other facilities, will be marked as private. Treat this area like someone's home, and stay out.

Not bringing your own snorkels and beach toys

Don't spend tons of money on rentals when you're allowed to bring your snorkel gear to a private island's beach. A family of four could save $120 or more in rental equipment fees with a BYO approach. Plus, you can ensure that your masks fit properly and not have to worry about the cleanliness of shared equipment.

If you have room in your luggage, you might also want to pack the kids' buckets, shovels, sand toys and beach balls so they don't whine about having nothing to play with or beg you to buy beach toys at the island's shops. Inflatable balls and floats pack down flat for easy transport and keep the kids entertained while you relax.

Forgetting beach necessities

If you hastily toss a few things in a beach bag five minutes before heading off the ship, you're bound to forget something important. Pack all the beach necessities the night before so you're not stuck paying inflated prices at the island's straw market.

Sunscreen, sun hats and sunglasses are a must. You might also want a cover-up for the lunch barbecue and either closed-toe or water shoes for specific excursions. On some lines, you must bring a pool towel from the ship to use on the island; don't assume towels will be provided.

You might also want to have a few dollars on hand to purchase souvenirs at the straw market or tip island staff (especially if you've rented a cabana with an attendant).

10 Cruise Private Island Mistakes You'll Regret Making

I must confess going to the cruise line’s private island is hands down my favorite part of a Caribbean cruise. I am one of those people who enjoy the private island cruise more than the other ports. However, there are some mistakes that can ruin your day on the private island. To avoid this, let’s take a look at some common mistakes you should steer clear of.

Mistakes to Avoid at the Cruise Private Island

1. not renting umbrellas in advance.

It’s important to remember that when you’re on a cruise private island, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is not to rent umbrellas or lounge chair covers. Don’t assume that you can easily get an umbrella or clamshell cover on the island because sometimes they sell out.

Although you can try to find free shade by moving your lounge chair under palm trees, there’s no guarantee that you’ll find shade. It’s important to remember that the Caribbean sun can be intense, and you don’t want to regret not having any shade at all.

The last thing you want to do is waste time at the beach looking for shade. If you pre-book your umbrella, you can simply show up at the rental huts and pick up your reserved umbrella—it’s that easy!

Suburbs 101 participates in affiliate programs including Amazon Associates Program and may earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

2. Not Realizing the Cruise Beverage Package is Not Included

It’s important for cruisers to check in advance what’s included in their beverage package before heading to the private island. Assuming that the drinks that you order at the private island are part of your drinks package can be a major mistake because sometimes they aren’t.

Different cruise lines have different policies, which may vary depending on the island. For example, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Unlimited Open Bar Package and Premium Plus Beverage Package allow you to order drinks at their private island Great Stirrup Cay but not at Harvest Caye. So, do your research beforehand to avoid any confusion and unexpected expenses.

3. Missing the Private Island BBQ Lunch

Make sure not to miss out on the private island BBQ buffet lunch when you visit. It’s one of the best parts of the cruise private island experience and beats heading back to the ship for lunch any day.

The open-air buffet usually features local dishes, BBQ items, and island music that will make you feel like you’re on a Caribbean vacation. It’s a more laid-back atmosphere that you definitely don’t want to miss.

4. Not Bringing Your Own Snorkel and Beach Toys

I always bring my own snorkeling gear and beach toys whenever I visit a cruise private island. It doesn’t make sense to spend money renting snorkeling equipment when I can easily bring my own. I also always bring a bag of beach toys for my kids. I like this sand toy set that comes with collapsible buckets to minimize luggage space.

5. Skipping the Private Island

Don’t make the mistake of skipping the cruise private island. Believe me, it’s one of the best stops on a Caribbean cruise! Sure you can avoid the crowd if you stay on the ship while everyone else goes to the private island, but you’ll be missing out on an amazing day at the beach.

There’s so much to do from the white sand beach and snorkeling in the turquoise water to the BBQ buffet. Plus, every cruise line’s private island will have attractions like zip lines, water slides, and horseback riding on the beach that you won’t want to miss.

6. Settling for the First Lounge Chair Closest to the Ship

It can be tempting to grab the first available lounge chairs close to the ship and relax. However, that spot is likely to be the busiest and most crowded since many people coming off the ship will have the same idea. I suggest you take your time and explore a bit further before settling down. By doing so, you can find a more peaceful spot on the beach to relax and spend your day.

7. Not Reserving the Water Equipment

It’s important to plan ahead if you’re heading to a private island. If you have your heart set on kayaking, it’s a good idea to reserve your kayak in advance.

These cruise private islands have a limited supply of kayaks, beach mats, snorkeling gear, and stand-up paddleboards, which can sell out quickly. To avoid disappointment, it’s best to book your equipment in advance.

8. Not Book Shore Excursions

Many of these cruise line’s private islands have shore excursions that do sell out. If you want to do a particular shore excursion, make sure you book it in advance that way you reserve your spot and won’t be scrambling trying to find an available shore excursion at the last minute!

9. Not Bringing Water Shoes

A common mistake that people make when they go on the cruise line’s private island is they don’t bring water shoes. Trust me, you’ll be more comfortable in water shoes when you get in the water because it will protect your feet.

Flip flops won’t work because they float so you’ll end up chasing after them half the time or worse, losing them. If you’re cruising with kids, it’s smart to bring water shoes to protect their little feet. You don’t want to have to buy water shoes at the island shops. Save your money and pack water shoes!  I personally don’t like the look of water shoes, so I always bring these water shoes that look like loafers!

10. Forgetting to Pack Essentials

It’s common for people to forget to pack essentials like sunblock, hat, sunglasses, etc. when going on a cruise private island. As a result, they either have to trek back to the ship or end up buying these things at the island shop.

To avoid this hassle, I have a cruise private island packing list to help make sure I pack everything I need for the day. I’m sharing my cruise private island beach bag packing list as a free printable so that you can make the most of your private island visit without worrying about forgetting something. Check it out!

Breaking News: Towel Clips have been replaced by Towel Bands as the new and best way to protect your towel from flying off of your pool, lounge, or beach chairs!

What makes our bands so much better than clips or clamps or other machinery? Here are just a few reasons!

  • Durability: Clips are typically made of metal, plastic and or other intricate components. These easily break. Our natural latex bands will never give you problems.

Cruise Center Beach

Grand Turk,GT - Turks And Caicos Islands

Cruise Center Beach fronts Grand Turk’s cruise port, and is a beautiful and sheltered beach. The ocean at the Cruise Center Beach is almost always calm and clear, and the majority of the coastline is clean soft sand. This beach can get crowded, especially when a cruise ship is in town. Reserve your beach chairs and umbrellas to secure your spot in tranquility!

Bringing a foldable Beach Chair onboard?

Cool Cruiser

Ok- I know this may sound crazy but has anyone brought a portable beach chair with them on board? We have all beach stops and are driving to the port. Plus we will already have our beach chairs in the car becuase we are staying in South Beach after the cruise.

I always take a chair. I tag it with room tag and give to porter at curbside.

NEWORLEANSCRUISER1

On my last cruise someone had a big beach umbrella with them. Carnival let them bring it onboard, and we saw it at all the stops during the cruise.

frito58

Well this is new one LOL

Rena921

LOL, oh mywow:rolleyes:

I sure wouldn't want to carry around all that junk. Cheap enough to rent.

yes, you can bring beach chairs. there have been many times i wish i'd brought ones that i KNEW were comfortable.

Crazy4Koko

OMG..were you on the Liberty with me?? We had an umbrella carrier, too!! :)

Heirloom

It's probably a good way to combat the chair hogs. Just push aside their reserved-for-all-day lounge chair....and take the spot you deserve !

Hmm.....think we'll try it ourselves !!!!

Haha

Guest LoveMyBoxer

We do that for the private islands. Hate the clamshells - too stuffy! And you can plant it right by the water.

We brought cheap blow-up floats.

We used them in Belize to snorkel.

Boy was it nice not to have to swim.

Just plant your head in the water, kick, and enjoy!

Then we gave them to local kids.

Well to each his own .;)

Experienced cruiser here and I have seriously thought of bringing them. But we live in Tampa so usually drive to ports and don't have to worry about flying and luggage restrictions. If I was flying, I wouldn't bother. My main motivation would be to use them on the ship, not in ports. It would be nice to plop a chair down on deck somewhere and to be able to leave for 5 minutes to get a drink and be able to come back and still have a seat and not be called a chair hog. And I have a beach umbrella that comes apart and would fit in my chair bag that would be good for ports too.. I may bring that too..

richfret

Since you asked ............................. "No! That is a bad idea!

nealstuber

I'm sorry but if I see you dragging that chair around - I'm just going to laugh. For all the hassle of storage, etc. you want to bring a folding chair? What about a folding table to go with it and the umbrella? Spend the $5.00 and rent one - jeez.

Family of 4... 4 backpackers chairs for 3 ports. Even if it is just 5 bucks a chair...50.bucks. But having them also allows us to stop at a lot of places like the back side of cozumel or cemetary reef in grand cayman or a half dozen beaches in Bermuda. Also if the chair hogs get too bad on sea days...

picomullet

Good Thread!! I was wondering this same thing as we have an inside cabin and there are no chairs. We drive to port so I am defineately considering taking one for our cabin. We could even take it out on the secret deck!!

TrinaLC

We are getting a non-balcony room for our upcoming cruise.

Since I normally spend almost every waking hour on the balcony, I was also thinking of bringing a folding chair (not a beach chair, but the collapsible type that many bring to e.g. kids soccer games) to use on the promenade deck - since inexplicably there really aren't places to sit there ...

I would put it in a duffel bag.

My mother in law bought collapsible chaises for us specifically to bring on our cruises. Back in those days we always booked an inside stateroom and enjoyed relaxing (Fantasy-class) on the deck below the lifeboats where, back then, there were no chairs. We'd bring our own and enjoy reading, shade and peace and quiet. Then they added chairs, but not enough. No problem, we had our own.

In 2007 I sailed NCL's Panama Canal by myself in an inside stateroom. I wanted a seat by the railing so I could enjoy my day watching our canal transit. So I brought it with me. This one was a small collapsible chair that fit into a little bag. I parked it in front of the "Corona booth" and you wouldn't believe how many people walked by (because there were no chairs to sit in!) commenting on what a great idea that was.

Now we always book a balcony and it is much less of an issue. No cruise line and no guest has ever given me a hard time about it. It is a simple way to resolve a chronic issue.

That settles it! Bringing my collapsible chair. DH will think I'm nuts. (But when he has a chance to reflect, he'll probably bring one too!)

stjohnbeachlover

I think you will be glad you did too. I have never taken one on a cruise, but we have gone to St. John for two weeks at a time. I used to always take a cheap chair with me and then just leave it behind after the two weeks. Not all beaches even have chair rentals and sometimes when they do, it is $10 or $15 per day.

Have been on 15 cruises and you learn you always bring too much and yet forget some thing any way. We bring 3 suit cases (One for the wife, one for me and one for the goodies we buy, like liquor and ship store stuff, for instance). In addition, we bring 2 wheeled carry ons.

Could we put a collapsible chair in the suit case or carry on? Sure! I just wouldn't do it, but that's me. But what the heck, I am a cruise-a-holic and if some one wants to bring a chair. Go for it. That's the fun of cruising.

So when I am on the Lido Deck and I see some one at the pool siting on a collapsible chair, I will smile and wink.

jmcancruise

jmcancruise

We actually considered bringing a collapsible chair on our last cruise to use in our inside room. Never got a chance to buy one once in florida, but maybe next time.

You will probably be told to remove them if you try to use them in a public area on the ship....I wouldn't want the hassle of schlepping them through the cruise terminal when going out to the beach, so it isn't something I would do....

Anthomaniac

too much hassle for me, even if we didnt fly to port...

Is that a guess or something you have observed?
