About Disney Cruise Line Port Galveston Terminal

Disney Cruise Line offers cruises from several ports in the United States, including Port of Miami and Port Canaveral in Florida . Passengers setting sail on Disney cruises out of these Florida locations have historically made up the bulk of Disney’s business. However, Disney also provides cruises from the Port of New York and other ports like the Port of New Orleans and Galveston.

Despite a lower cruise volume than Disney cruises from Florida , the Port of Galveston remains popular with families and couples seeking Western Caribbean getaways. The Port of Galveston is a multi-purpose port, handling cruises, cargo and commercial ventures. Also known as Galveston Wharves , it has operated since 1825.

What Is the Address of Disney Cruise Line at Port Galveston?

Disney Cruise Line operates out of Terminal 2 (also called Terminal 28) at the Port of Galveston.

Phone: (409) 766-6100

Continue for five minutes to Terminal 1 or about 10 minutes to Terminal 2. Follow the signs for each terminal entrance.

Cost of Parking at Port Galveston for Disney Cruises

When planning a Disney cruise out of the Port of Galveston, TX, it’s essential to factor in the parking costs. The length of the cruise will determine how much parking will be required and the fee associated with it. You can choose to park at the port’s official parking lots or at a third-party parking facility.

Official Galveston Cruise Parking Lots and Garage

The Port of Galveston offers two official parking options: a nearby Economy Lot that provides a complimentary park-and-ride shuttle to your departure terminal, and the Express Lot and Parking Garage which are within walking distance of the terminal (no shuttle provided).

Port Galveston’s Disney cruise parking rates for 2024 range from $18-$22 per day, plus taxes and fees. We suggest reserving parking in advance .

It’s also important to note that rates are subject to change without prior notice by the Port Authority at Galveston. Double-check for any updates before making your parking plans.

Unofficial Galveston Cruise Parking Lots and Garages

There are several third-party parking lots and garages in the Galveston port area.

The largest indoor parking facility in Galveston is operated by Port Parking . It’s located about about a mile from the Disney Cruise Line terminal and provides customers with a complimentary shuttle. There is ample space to accommodate large vehicles, such as SUVs. The company takes its security seriously, too. Their indoor parking facility is completely enclosed; all access doors are locked at the end of the day, while motion detector alarms, laser beams, and surveillance system ensure your vehicle remains safe. Outdoor parking is just as secure, protected by 15.5 ft. razor wire fencing and timed gates that only the facility owners can open.

Prices for this facility vary, with rates anywhere from $10-$26 per day being common (subject to change — be sure to re-check prices before your cruise).

Space is limited; reservations may be made in advance , but are subject to cancellation fees.

Parking at Nearby Hotels

Some hotels located very close to the port offer their registered guests the option of leaving their car parked at the hotel during their cruise. Check directly with your travel agent or hotel to determine if this option is available and how much it will cost.

Restaurants Near Port Galveston

Passengers embarking or disembarking at Port Galveston will find various dining opportunities in the area. The historic Strand District features dozens of restaurants and bars within walking distance of Terminal 2.

There are also plenty of eating options just off the beach in the hotel district along Galveston Seawall, such as chain restaurants, family-oriented attractions, convenience stores, and grocery shops.

Whether seeking souvenirs or sustenance before embarking on their journey, passengers can rest assured that convenient dining options abound near Port Galveston.

Weather Impacts on Disney Cruises from Galveston

While Galveston Disney Cruises aren’t scheduled during hurricane season , weather can still impact your sailing. You might be surprised to learn that early morning fog often delays cruise departures and arrivals in Galveston . While this is rarely a significant issue, it might throw the ship’s schedule off by a few hours as you wait for the port to reopen. To minimize the risk of this causing a problem:

  • On the first day of your Galveston cruise : Be flexible with your schedule; heavy fog might mean you’re asked to delay your arrival at the terminal until the prior cruise can disembark and the terminal/parking lots can empty.
  • On the last day of your Galveston cruise : Don’t book your flight back home too early; give yourself an extended buffer of a few hours in case your ship is delayed from docking due to fog. Better yet, plan to explore the city on your return day, spend the night at a hotel, then fly home the next day.

Airports for Galveston Cruises

Image of a jet parked at an airport terminal, with service vehicles and luggage bins nearby

The best way to get to the Port of Galveston is by plane (unless you’re close enough to drive).

Which Airport Should I Fly Into for a Galveston Cruise?

The two closest airports to the Port of Galveston are both located in Houston, Texas:

  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) — 72 miles from the Cruise Terminal
  • William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) — 42 miles from the Cruise Terminal

What is the Best Way to Get from the Airport to Port Galveston?

Once at the airport, you’ll need a taxi, shuttle, or rideshare to reach the port. While you can rent a car at the airport, that is often more expensive than other options.

To ensure cost-effectiveness and convenience, travelers should plan their trips ahead of time. Those arriving at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) should allow at least 90 minutes to get to the cruise terminal. Those traveling from William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) should dedicate at least 60 minutes to their drive. Shuttles may take longer.

How Much does an Uber Cost from the Houston Airport to Port Galveston?

The cost of an Uber varies greatly depending on the vehicle you choose and how far you travel. Here is an estimate of how much an Uber ride will cost from either George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) or William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) to the Disney Cruise Line terminal at the Port of Galveston.

Estimated cost of an Uber from IAH to Port of Galveston:

  • Uber X: $75
  • Uber XL: $143
  • Uber Black: $265

Estimated Cost of an Uber from HOU to Port of Galveston:

  • Uber X: $47
  • Uber XL: $88
  • Uber Black: $163

How Much are Taxis from the Houston Airport to Port Galveston?

Despite the convenience of Uber, taxis are an equally viable option to connect you to the Port of Galveston. The downside to taxis is that they can be slightly more expensive than comparable ridesharing options.

  • The estimated cost of a taxi from IAH to the Port of Galveston is $170.
  • The estimated cost of a taxi from HOU to the Port of Galveston is $103.

How Much are Shuttles from the Airport to the Port of Galveston and Galveston Hotels?

Shuttle service is a popular option to reach the port and its nearby hotels; shared shuttles can be a more cost-effective option than dedicated vehicles such as Uber, Lyft, or taxi. But they’re usually priced per-person, so larger groups might find it better to seek another option.

Official Disney Shuttles

Disney offers an official ground transportation service for $45 per person (one-way). This service should be reserved in advance with Disney Cruise Line or your Travel Agent.

The official Disney shuttles service these routes:

  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to/from Port of Galveston Cruise Terminal
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to/from San Luis Resort (when hotel is booked as part of cruise reservation)
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to/from Hilton Galveston Island (when hotel is booked as part of cruise reservation)

Houston Hobby Airport (HOU) is not served by the official Disney shuttles.

Unofficial Airport Shuttles

Galveston Express offers a third-party option which serves IAH and HOU airports, along with hotels on Galveston Island. Shuttle transportation from Houston to Galveston is available seven days a week between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. This shared shuttle transportation starts at $30 per person (one-way), with senior and child discounts available.

The Disney Wonder sailed out of Galveston Texas for a number of years.

However, it is her sister ship the Magic which is sailing out of Galveston in 2023 and 2024.

Disney Magic sails out of Galveston in early 2023 on 4, 5, 6, and 7-night Western Caribbean cruises.

The Magic then returns to the port in late December after a repositioning Panama Canal cruise from San Diego.

For 2024 Disney Magic has 6 cruises sailing from the port of Galveston.

There may well be more but right now, only the early 2024 Disney cruises are released for booking.

They are all Western Caribbean itineraries and have either 4, 5, or 6-night cruises.

Disappointingly there are no port stops at Castaway Cay.

This has happened in the past on 7-night cruises from Galveston but unfortunately, there aren’t any port stops at Disney’s Private Island for the 2023 and 2024 sailings.

Disney Magic Ship Overview

disney cruise from galveston

If you sail from Galveston you will be sailing on the Disney Magic. She was the first ship to be added to the Disney Cruise fleet and she is the sister ship to the Disney Wonder.

They are known as the Classic Disney Ships.

The Classic Ships are 954 feet long – so not huge by present-day cruise ship standards.

The Disney Magic is a good first cruise ship to sail on as she is of a manageable size so you quickly learn your way around.

But she is large enough to offer plenty of things to do!

Disney Cruise Out of Galveston

There are 877 staterooms on Disney Magic.

You can choose from Inside, Outside, Verandah, and Concierge Staterooms.

Your choice of a stateroom is one of the most important things to think about so we have written this comprehensive guide to Choosing a Disney Cruise Stateroom.

All Disney Cruise ships have 3 main dining restaurants and you will visit them all during your vacation.

You will be in a different restaurant each night and your serving team will come with you.

This is unique to Disney and is known and Rotational Dining.

Here are the main dining restaurants on Disney Magic:

  • Animator’s Palate
  • Lumiere’s
  • Rapunzel’s Royal Table

disney wonder waldisneytheater

Adults have plenty to keep them entertained including the Broadway-style shows which are staged in the Walt Disney Theater.

There is also an adult-exclusive area that includes a spa, the Cove Cafe, and the Quiet Cove Pool area.

As you would expect from Disney, there is plenty to keep the kids occupied as well.

Disney Cruise Galveston Prices

What does a Disney Cruise from Galveston cost?

There are a lot of factors to consider here.

The date and the type of stateroom you choose will determine the price.

Also, it is usually best to book a Disney cruise as far ahead as possible as usually, the prices go up.

It is rare that there are any last-minute discounts on Disney cruises. However, they do happen.

In the past, the Disney Cruises from Galveston have sometimes been offered at a last-minute discount.

Here is a sample of some Disney Cruise Galveston prices.

Remember that although the price of this cruise seems high it is over Christmas so will always be a higher cost time of year.

Review for a Caribbean - Western Cruise on Disney Magic

We chose this cruise because I experienced a Disney cruise as a teenager and had a great time, so I thought my 4 yr old would enjoy it. It turns out he is not really into Disney movies or characters, and that was about 25-35% of the onboard activities (meeting characters). The kids clubs for the under 10 crowd were also crowded and did not have a great kid to counselor ratio (I think the teen and ... Read More

7 day cruise left us feeling left out and shorted for our money. Captain said winds were too high to port in Jamaica.... never tried again. 4 other cruises were able to port on the same day. So we literally were at sea for no reason missing out on what was promised. If he was able to dock in San Juan (terrible storm) he could have dock in Jamaica. Disappointed with not docking... ... Our family and friends choose this cruise out of our nearby port of Galveston. We Grandparents are experienced cruisers (52x). Our family are huge Disney Cruise fans as we've been on both the Disney Dream & Fantasy. For the holiday, we've decided to book a 4 nights cruise on the Disney Wonder from Galveston...and we're sad to say it was a huge disappointment. This is a quick summary of our great Disney cruise. Getting to the ship in Galveston was easier than I remember from previous cruises. Could be that the smaller Disney Wonder was the only ship there. This was my 11th cruise and my first time with Disney. I thought the ship was smooth, I hardly felt it moving. I did not feel as if we were over crowded with children and I enjoyed the characters and shows. I loved the fact that there was no a casino on the ship and I did not have to smell the awful smoke. I loved the decor and it seemed the staff was not over worked or cranky. Since my family ... Read More

Mom Approved Travel Agents tour the Disney Magic in Galveston, Texas

It’s no secret we are BIG fans of Disney Cruise Line around Mom Approved Travel. Disney Cruise Line is one of our top choices for cruising with children. Several of the Texas-area Mom Approved Travel Advisors had the opportunity to tour the Disney Magic earlier this month when she was in port in Galveston, Texas.

The Disney Magic was the very first ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, so she has a special place in our hearts!

The Disney Magic fast facts

The Disney Magic is 84,000 gross metric tons and 984 feet long. First time cruisers may have a hard time visualizing her size, but we feel she is not too small, and not too large. The Disney Magic is a great option for a first time cruiser or someone who enjoys the classic ship layout! With 875 staterooms, and a capacity for 2,713 passengers it’s comfy enough to move around without feeling like you are on a floating city.

The Disney Magic’s 11 deck layout allows for everything to have a really nice flow to the ship, which makes find where you want to go a little easier! There are plenty of places to be with other Disney Cruise passengers and plenty of spots to chill and relax, so you don’t have to people unless you want to.

The Disney Cruise Line experience

We can’t really talk about the Disney Magic without talking about the 950 Cast Member crew who really make a difference onboard. There is a distinctly Disney difference when it comes to sailing on a Disney Cruise. You can see what planning a Disney Cruise looks like HERE .

If you have experienced the magic of Disney Cast Members in the theme parks, Disney Cruise Line Cast Members take service to a different level. Some families find it hard to sail any another cruise line once they have experienced a Disney Cruise. So, you can’t say we didn’t warn you!

Entertainment on the Disney Magic

Disney knows a few things about entertaining families, as they have done do for over 100 years! On a Disney Cruise ship, you can expect Broadway-caliber shows to keep you dancing in you seat and feeling all the feelings from some of your favorite stories, and a few new ones!

There are 3 stage shows currently on the Disney Magic: Disney Dreams, Twice Charmed and Tangled the Musical. Tangled is an incredible show exclusive to the Disney Magic centered around the story of Rapunzel you love! Check out a preview of Tangled below:

As you can see, Disney Cruise stage productions offer incredible sets, talented performers, some of your favorite songs (and a few new ones too) with the magic of storytelling in a way only Disney can do. Chances are you’ll find a few surprises in the production and it offers such a fun experience that you simply can’t get from your living room!

Dining onboard the Disney Magic

Disney Cruise Line is a little different from other cruise lines, as it utilizes a Rotational Dining experience. There are 3 beautiful and delicious dining main dining restaurants: Rapunzel’s Royal Table, Animator’s Palate, and Lumiere’s. You will rotate to a different restaurant each evening, but your Serving team will stay with you, so they get to know your family very quickly. If your kiddo asks for ketchup on night one, chances are it will be waiting for you on night two. Disney Cruise Server Teams really are incredible! There are quick grab options and adult exclusive dining opportunities at Palo as well!

Everyone's favorite part - Disney Cruise Line Kids Clubs!

An absolute favorite of Moms, Dads and kids, are Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab. Here your kids will engage in immersive themed activities and make new friends under the supervision of trained Disney youth counselors. From making cookies, to sketching Disney characters, doing crafts, playing games, meeting some of their favorite characters, dressup and SO MUCH more, you may have to drag them out.

Tweens and Teens have great options to chill, play games, participate in activities and hang with new friends at Edge and Vibe. They even have a few (supervised) areas that are exclusive to their age group, so they can chill, play and hang out.

Adults only areas on the Disney Magic - no kids allowed!

While the kids are playing in the incredibly themed kids clubs, you can find peaceful adult exclusive areas on the Disney Magic to relax, knowing your kids are being taken care of. A Mom Approved favorite? The SPA! The Senses Spa has a lot of ways to relax, but the rainforest room is a must do!

Disney cruise line – cruises from galveston, texas.

A Disney Cruise from Galveston is the perfect cruise for the whole family! Imagine sailing around the Gulf of Mexico with Captain Mickey. It will be a vacation your entire family will remember for a lifetime.

Galveston, Texas

Galveston, Texas, is a fascinating coastal resort city with a rich history and a vibrant culture, located on Galveston Island and Pelican Island off the Southeast Texas coast. The city was named after Bernardo de Gálvez, a Spanish military and political leader, and has a storied past that includes its role as a major historic port, temporary capital of the Republic of Texas, and the center of the impact of the devastating 1900 hurricane, the deadliest in U.S. history .

Galveston is celebrated for its 32 miles of beaches, making it the perfect place for those looking to enjoy the Gulf Coast. Beyond the beach, it’s a place full of art, historic architecture, chic boutiques, and ghost legends. The city has been a hub for various industries throughout its history, with current economic focuses on tourism, healthcare, shipping, and finance. It’s also known for the University of Texas Medical Branch, which is a significant economic force in the city .

The city’s historical significance is reflected in its six historic districts and over 60 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcasing one of the largest collections of 19th-century buildings in the U.S . Galveston’s early settlement began with the Galveston City Company in 1834, and it played critical roles during the Texas revolution against Mexico and the American Civil War. The Galveston hurricane of 1900 is a pivotal moment in its history, leading to significant city planning and protection measures against future storms .

Today, Galveston continues to thrive as a tourist destination, offering a blend of historical experiences, cultural activities, and recreational opportunities that attract visitors year-round. From its unique museums and architecture to the vibrant arts scene and beachfront attractions, Galveston embodies a distinctive mix of Texas history and coastal charm.

The Port of Galveston is located near Downtown Galveston, with convenient parking lot nearby. The Disney Cruise Line terminal is currently Terminal 28, located at 2702 Harborside Drive. If you have been to the Port Canaveral cruise terminal, you will notice the Galveston version is not Disney themed, it is a shared cruise terminal with other cruise lines that sail from Galveston. However, on your day of departure, Disney will be the only cruise line using the terminal that day.

The Port of Galveston is a significant cruise hub, ranked as the 4th busiest cruise port in the USA by annual cruise shipping traffic, with about 1 million embarking passengers. In addition to Disney, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess and Norwegian Cruise Lines sail from Galveston each year.

Galveston is a natural cruise departure port, with proximity to many major cities (50 miles to Houston, 215 miles to Austin, 250 miles to San Antonio, 290 miles to Dallas and 330 miles to New Orleans). About 35 million people live within a 4-hour drive of Galveston!

Getting to the Port of Galveston

Depending on your location, there are a few ways to get to Galveston for your Disney Cruise.

For travelers flying in, the closest commercial airports are in Houston:

  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) , located about 70 miles north of Galveston. It’s one of the nation’s busiest airports, serving many domestic and international flights.
  • William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) , about 40 miles north of Galveston and closer than IAH, primarily serves domestic flights and some international connections.

From either airport, you can reach Galveston by rental car, Uber/LYFT, shuttle service, or taxi. Shuttle services like Galveston Express offer direct transportation to Galveston. Disney also offers shuttle service directly from IAH to the cruise terminals (for a cost).

We strongly suggest that you fly into Houston the day before your cruise. If your flight is late, Mickey will not wait for you. Flying after the cruise, plan your flight for noon or later.

If you’re driving to Galveston:

  • From the North or West : Take Interstate 45 South directly to Galveston Island. I-45 ends in Galveston, turning into Broadway Avenue once you cross the causeway onto the island.
  • From the East : If you’re coming from areas east of Galveston and the Louisiana border, you might use State Highway 87 and the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry to reach the island.

If you are driving to Galveston, you will need somewhere to park your car during your cruise.

  • Find a hotel that offers cruise parking. There are several hotels that offer both cruise parking and a shuttle to the terminals. Please check with each hotel directly to confirm pricing and availability.
  • There are several dedicated parking lots and parking garages near the terminal. Considering using EZ Cruise Parking Galveston or Cruise Park , both conveniently located within walking distance of the cruise terminal. Parking at either lot should be in the range of about $80 to $100 for a 7-night cruise.

Disney Cruise Ships in Galveston

While the schedule changes from time to time, the Disney Magic has been the ship seen in Galveston over the last few years, and for the foreseeable future. The Magic is one of Disney’s smallest ships, but no less magical than the newer ones. In the past, the Disney Wonder has sailed out of Galveston as well.

Launched in 1998, the Disney Magic was the first ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, marking the entertainment giant’s entry into the cruise industry. The ship is designed with families in mind, featuring the distinctive Disney-themed entertainment, dining, and amenities that the brand is known for. Here are some key features and aspects of the Disney Magic:

Disney Magic Design and Specifications

  • Tonnage : Approximately 84,000 gross tons.
  • Length : About 964 feet.
  • Passenger Capacity : The Disney Magic can accommodate approximately 2,700 passengers in around 875 staterooms.
  • Crew : Approximately 950 members.

  • Family Entertainment : The ship offers a variety of live shows, movies, and character meet-and-greets featuring beloved Disney characters. Broadway caliber entertainment can be found in the Walt Disney Theater.
  • Dining : There are multiple dining options onboard, including themed restaurants that offer unique experiences, such as Animator’s Palate, where the dining room comes to life with Disney animation and Rapunzel’s Table, where you will enjoy a feast fit for royalty.
  • Pools and Recreation : The ship features family pools, an adults-only pool, and Aquaduck Water Coaster.
  • Youth Clubs : There are clubs and lounges for different age groups, from toddlers to teens, offering activities and entertainment tailored to each age range.
  • Adults-Only Areas : The Disney Magic includes spaces exclusively for adults, such as bars, nightclubs, and an adults-only pool area, ensuring that adult passengers can find their own spaces for relaxation and entertainment.

Notable Features

  • Innovations : The Disney Magic introduced several cruise industry firsts, including the first ship to have an almost entire deck dedicated to children’s activities and the first to offer rotational dining, where guests rotate through a series of themed restaurants with their service staff following them.

Disney Cruise Line has expanded its fleet since the launch of the Disney Magic, but the Magic remains a beloved ship for its charm, family-friendly atmosphere, and the quality of its amenities and services. It is considered one of Disney’s classic ships. Whether you’re a Disney fan or just looking for a family-oriented cruise experience, the Disney Magic offers a memorable and magical journey on the high seas.

Currently, the Disney Ships include the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder (Disney Magic’s sister ship), Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream and Disney Wish. Disney Cruise Line has announced two new Disney Cruise line ships, the Disney Treasure will launch in late 2024, and the Disney Adventure will launch in 2025, which will be based in Singapore. Be carful of hidden fees. There are no convenience stores on board. You want a Gatorade in the middle of the night, oh well. Want a bag of chips, oh well. You tip your server extra from the 18% already added... they will give you another tip fee on the last day worth hundreds of dollars. Want to go to a theatre for a show other than a Disney movie, oh well. Want to stay a little late at a bar/grill, oh well. The one amazing thing is that every single solitary person I came across on board was delightful. I'd never do Disney again, but they have certainly selected great workers.

We set sail from Galveston on a 4-night Disney cruise in January 2024- No regret at all! As Disney Cruise Line's first vessel, the Magic is small and feels kinda old, but small and old doesn't mean bad! We indeed had a wonderful time on the Magic! Food was great. All crew members were happy, friendly and accommodating. Our Verandah stateroom was on the 7th floor, within walking distance to the Cabanas buffet and the pool deck where the free self-service beverage bars and other fast food places were located on the 9th floor. The elevators were slow and small- people would just walk up and down the flights of stairs. All 3 of the main dining rooms on board- Lumiere's, Rapunzel's Royal Table, and Animator's Palate were very nice, and our server, Kamel, and his helper, Angelia, who rotated with us were amazing and the best! The personalized service made us feel like being treated like family! Lots of onboard activities and entertainment for kids- the kids clubs, the Broadway-style shows, character greetings, the swimming pools and water play areas, etc. My four- and seven-year-old girls sure did have a busy schedule every day while aboard. We are soooooo looking forward to our next Disney cruise vacation- the Wish or the Treasure would be awesome!

We had an amazing time on the Disney Magic!! Make sure you arrive to the port terminal at your boarding time or you will have to wait. Porters are available to take your luggage to your stateroom for you. Download the DCL navigator app ahead of time and bring your online check-in form and boarding documents for security. Don't forget that adults can carry on 2 bottles of wine or a 6 pack of beer. As soon as we boarded the ship we went to guest services to load money on to our stateroom account (we buy gift cards ahead of time) - highly recommend buying them at a discount from Sam's club or target to help with cost. Each days activities and dining info will be listed in the app. Remember that room service is available 24/7! Highlights from this cruise were palo brunch, the art of the theme walking tour, bingo, hot stone massage at senses spa, dinner at animator's palate, the anyone can cook culinary series, and the Disney dreams show. My partner also enjoyed the alcohol tastings on board. Luckily we were still able to have fireworks for the pirate party even though it was windy out. One of the biggest contributors to our positive experience on the ship were the staff! We loved our stateroom host, Made, from Indonesia who provided us with turndown service twice a day, and made us beautiful towel animals every night. Our server team, Romy from India and Juviani from Brazil, were incredibly efficient and made sure we had everything we needed for dinner. We had a few issues with our room and guest services addressed it right away and were very helpful. The Disney Magic is the original ship and is still so beautiful and well maintained! The art deco theme throughout is stunning and you really get the feel that you are on a classic ship. The trip was truly so wonderful! The only con was that we couldn't dock in Progreso due to the weather and high waves, however, the priority of safety was much appreciated and we still had a fun day at sea. With the stormy sea, we did experience some rocking the last two nights. If you are prone to motion sickness I recommend getting a room midship and with a verandah so you can get fresh air. If you're a Disney fan or just want the best when it comes to service, try Disney cruise line!

We just had an incredible four night adventure on the Disney Wonder! I was blown away by how amazing this entire experience was and highly recommend DCL to anyone who loves Disney that is looking to be pampered and treated like royalty. The experience starts with you being greeted warmly in the terminal at Galveston and as soon as you walk on the ship your family name is announced! You don't even need to take your luggage in by yourself! Disney delivers it straight to your stateroom for you! On embarkation day you are free to explore the ship which is like a horizontal skyscraper with multiple restaurants, a sports deck, movie theater, bars and lounges, shopping and of course your stateroom! We opted for an ocean view with private verandah room on deck 6 midship. We loved our stateroom! It was wonderful to watch the sunrise/sunset from our own balcony. The bed was so soft and comfortable and I love that they have a separated shower/sink and toilet/sink set up for the restroom. The room has so much storage space and even comes with a mini fridge and a TV with Disney movies on demand! Our stateroom host was excellent! He went above and beyond normal housekeeping by folding and hanging up our clothes, organizing our belongings, making towel animals for us and even leaving chocolate surprises on our pillows before bed. Each night on DCL you are assigned a different themed restaurant to eat in and your server team rotates with you. We enjoyed all three restaurants: Animator's palate, Tiana's place and Triton's. My personal favorite was Triton's which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day! The menus each night were varied, inventive and yummy! I enjoyed something from every meal and our thoughtful servers made sure we had everything we needed for an excellent meal each time. Highlights for me were the beef satay skewers and king salmon at Triton's, and the caramel macadamia nut cheesecake from Tiana's on pirate night! You definitely don't want to miss Animator's palate and Tiana's which have live entertainment while you eat. And if the three restaurants weren't enough they also had a buffet and fast casual food like hamburgers, pizza, and French fries on deck 9 near the pool. Don't forget the unlimited soft serve at Eye Scream and the free room service! We ordered room service several times and each time our food came quickly as requested. Pro tip - it's not on the menu but you can ask for Mickey bars! On the ship there are so many activities to keep everyone busy. There are programs for everyone from kids, adults and families to enjoy. Each days activities are featured in the daily navigator available on the cruise line app, in paper format at guest services and on your stateroom TV. The captain and cruise director also make announcements to keep everyone in the loop. Highlights for me were the Art of the theme walking tour, bingo, watching Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker in the movie theater, officer pin trading and the Pirates in the Caribbean deck party complete with fireworks! We also greatly enjoyed the live theater shows that they have every night! Our favorites were Frozen and the Golden Mickeys. Everything from the music, costumes and elaborate sets makes you feel like you are watching a play on broadway! In true Disney fashion every staff member we encountered was courteous, helpful and welcoming! We were greeted throughout the day while walking around the ship and the atmosphere is so full of joy! You might think that a Disney Cruise is just for kids, but it's not! Yes there are a lot of kids. However there are also several adult only areas including quiet cove swimming pool and hot tubs, the spa and fitness center, as well as a cafe and bar that are exclusive to adults. If you want to get even more exclusive you can elect to dine in the 18+ restaurant Palo that serves an Italian Thebes brunch and dinner (at an extra charge). There are also activities just for adults including trivia and even dance parties. As you can tell, I had a phenomenal experience on Disney Cruise Line. Bottom line if you are a Disney fan you need to do it. You will love it! Last tip: book your cruise through Small World Vacations for on board credit! We were able to get $100 just for booking with them!

My family just returned from our 1st cruise & we set the bar high by choosing Disney Cruise Line (DCL), which leaves from Galveston for a few months each year. Spoiler-alert: we had a great time & will be on another DCL trip as soon as we can afford it. Living in Austin, we either need to make a long drive or take on the added expense of flying to a coastal port. Galveston was the obvious choice, and of the 3 outfits sailing from there, only DCL met our needs. While we're not extreme Disney fans, we're pros at doing the theme park routine & there is no comparison when it comes to Disney's idea of hospitality. We knew if we ever overcame our aversion to the potential perils of cruising, it would be DCL that won our cash. Going with DCL means that you'll pay more than with other lines but you'll deal with less people, fewer service snafus, & a pristine environment at all times. We found all of this during our week-long Caribbean cruise in January 2020 & were satisfied enough to put down a deposit on our next one before we left the ship. Before departure, there is much to decide. After reserving a guaranteed verandah stateroom (a lower cost option in which DCL picks our final room, but it will have a private outdoor space), we could join the online groups for our dates, start to meet people, & gain intel from pro DCL cruisers on how everything works. Just as in planning a Disney Parks vacay, insider tips help with understanding the flow, what activities are good for which family members, & how to minimize frustration. We had to decide whether we'd do a "fish extender" group (a kind of "secret Santa;" we instead did a relaxed version called "pixie dusting"), whether to decorate our door (we did, w/ a low-effort array from teacher supplies), & whether to reserve extras like adult-only dining or DCL excursions at ports-of-call. We found that senior cruisers ("Castaway Club" members) and those with Concierge-level rooms had filled up any of the extras we wanted before we even bought our cruise. This was a bummer, but we found alternatives. For dining at Palo (the only extra cost dining on the Wonder, one of the smaller ships), we had to go to the listed location as soon as we boarded the ship to request our brunch reservation, obtained without issue. It seems that DCL holds a few slots back, in addition to those released when the senior cruisers cancel. For excursions, since we're familiar w/ both ports of call from past trips (Cozumel & Grand Cayman), we opted to do our own thing, visiting lesser known snorkeling beaches where we expected few cruisers to venture. Onboard, adults found enjoyment in pursuits like enjoying free room service on our verandah, running laps on the 1 third of a mile oceanview track, using the gym & locker room at the spa, chilling in the adults-only Quiet Cove whirlpool & deck areas, & visiting some of the lounges for a cocktail-of-the-day. Our son loved the teen & tween clubs (Vibe & Edge) where he made several new friends, played video games, & joined group activities. Together, we took in a few first-run films in the theaters, watched one of the Broadway-style shows, laughed at a few live game shows, & attended a couple deck parties featuring most of the classic Disney faces. Speaking of characters, if you really love Disney, you will have ample opportunity (scheduled almost every hour, 8:30a - 10:30p daily) to meet & have a pic taken with your favorites. We saw almost every princess, all the OG mouse-dog-duck-chipmunk guys, Captain Hook & Smee, & a few newer ones like Stitch, Vampirina, Fancy Nancy, & Captain Jack Sparrow. We never waited in line at any of the scheduled photo ops, but I still managed to get a pic with Goofy when he appeared on Deck 4 during one of my A.M. runs. Would this even be a Yelp review if I didn't talk about food? DCL has a system in which you rotate through the 3 family-dining spots, assigned to either 1st (5:45p) or 2nd (8:15p) seatings at a reserved table (which may be shared with another group). Service was great & food was fine, but we didn't like 2nd seating. By that hour, we're too tired to really enjoy the drawn out pace of a 4-course meal & themed show that kept going until almost 10p. Next time, we'll reserve early enough to get the 1st seating; if not, we'll go to guest services upon boarding to request a switch. BTW, rotational dining is included in the cost of your cruise & you can ask for as much of the menu as you wish, so if you wanna try one of everything, go for it! Just know that the portions are often large. I always felt stuffed & worried about all the waste. We preferred the excellent buffet at Cabanas (available before 5p, except for one late night buffet on Pirate Night). With that & the 4-5 other walk-up options, we had freedom to come & go, adding food we wanted to our plates. All of these are also included in the base cost. Next time, we'll opt-out of some of the repeated rotational dinings for the walk-ups.

11 Reason To Sail on Cruises From Galveston

I n no uncertain terms, a cruise port makes all the difference regarding your entire vacation. After all, the location of your departure sets the tone for your trip moving forward, determining which destinations you’ll reach once you’re on the high seas.

While specific destinations like Miami or Canaveral boast unique strengths, something might also be said for the Port of Galveston, Texas. A smaller port overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston may not be the largest or busiest destination from which to depart. Yet, there are plenty of amicable reasons to look into this idyllic Texan island for your next cruise-going experience.

1. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Offer Cruises From Galveston

Looking at it plainly, Galveston has three cruise terminals making up its port. In contrast, far larger alternatives, like the Port of Miami, have eleven terminals. Because of this, Galveston unfortunately cannot house many of the industry’s prestigious cruise lines. However, the port’s terminals support several large-scale cruise corporations, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, and Disney Cruises departing from Galveston regularly.

2. The Nearby Cruise Destinations Are Well Worth It

Admittedly, inevitable drawbacks are attached to cruises from Galveston. Considering how much farther west it is than ports in Florida or along the East Coast, most cruise lines out of Galveston cannot travel to their company’s private islands as many are in the Eastern Caribbean. However, Galveston’s location along the Gulf of Mexico has its distinct perks, including ready access to the Western Caribbean and parts of South and Central America. Though some guests might regret losing a chance at CocoCay, it’s hard to be upset when trekking along the shores of Mexico, Honduras, or Belize.

3. It’s Easier To Navigate Than Larger Ports

There’s no simple answer when it comes to determining the total cost of cruises from Galveston over any other port in the U.S. Like most ports, the final cost of the cruise depends on numerous factors, including the time of year you’re sailing, the location of your cabin, and the cruise line you plan on traveling with. However, the convenience of navigating the port itself makes Galveston a perfect option for anyone new to cruise vacations. Avoiding the large-scale crowds and tedious boarding lines as other major ports, Galveston remains a hassle-free destination for most novice travelers out there.

Baby, It's Cold Outside! 12 Warm Destinations to Escape to This Winter

4. galveston is conveniently located in the central u.s..

Given Galveston’s distinct location in eastern Texas , it’s one of the most readily accessible ports for travelers across the U.S. Located in the heart of America, travelers from the Western U.S. will have just as easy time reaching it as vacationers from the Midwest or East Coast. After all, who wants to sit on a lengthy plane ride to reach their port of call? Also, Galveston lacks the same high value of traffic as Miami or other popular ports, making it relatively hassle-free to reach.

5. The Port Terminal Is Reasonably Close to the Airport

Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport is the closest airport to Galveston. Roughly 41 miles northwest of the port, travelers can easily navigate from the airport to their cruise terminal in under an hour. Galveston is also close to several major cities, making it an option, albeit a farther one, for anyone flying into Austin or Dallas. However, given Houston’s short driving distance to Galveston, William P. Hobby Airport is your best bet for air travel.

6. The Boarding Process Is Quick and Seamless

As mentioned above, Galveston doesn’t have the same volume of passengers flooding through its port as Miami, Canaveral, or Port Everglades. As a result, boarding a ship is comparatively tamer—especially since the port opened up its third and latest terminal in 2022. Having been constructed in the past two decades and carefully refurbished, these terminals are in fantastic shape, making the onboarding process much more efficient for vacationers. The terminals also come equipped with innovative new features, with Terminal 3 offering mobile check-in and state-of-the-art facial recognition devices.

7. There Are Plenty of Hotels Nearby

Another notable feature of Galveston is the number of hotels near the port. (Because let’s face it: what’s more accessible than simply waking up, hopping in your car, and practically walking onto the ship without worrying about losing track of time?) What’s more, many of the hotels in the Galveston area have special offers for anyone traveling onboard a cruise ship. These offers include free or discounted parking rates and a helpful shuttle that ferry passengers back and forth from the hotel to the ship. While several hotels in Galveston have these amenities, some of the best include the Hilton Galveston Island Resort and the San Luis Resort .

8. Parking Is Easy

Don’t let Galveston’s size fool you—the port itself has plenty of options when it comes to parking. As previously suggested, anyone staying at a nearby hotel might want to consider leaving their car parked there and taking a shuttle, taxi, or Uber over to their terminal. Additionally, travelers can reserve a space in the port’s parking lot ahead of their trip. These parking spaces are safe and secure, and port employees will assist with any luggage brought aboard on cruises from Galveston.

9. Galveston Itself Is a Beautiful Place To Visit

The main reason we believe you should depart from Galveston on your next cruise is the opportunity you’ll have to see what it has to offer. Like most major cities, there’s plenty to do and see around town, with every prospective sight catering to travelers’ interests. For those interested in shopping, the Strand Historical District has plenty of independently owned stores that feature everything from odd tchotchkes to essential beach items. Galveston’s famous Moody Gardens is an educational park built around natural wonders such as exotic sea life, immaculate flowers, roaming monkeys, and sloths.

10. You’re Bound To Find Some Great Last-Minute Deals

As previously mentioned, Galveston is a more scaled-down port than Miami or Port Canaveral, but its three terminals still receive cruise ships constantly. Because of this constantly moving schedule, most travelers will find it incredibly easy to find last-minute deals on select cruises from Galveston—often days before the ship is booked to leave. Sure, it may not be practical for those traveling from longer distances to book something last-minute. Yet these last-minute deals are well worth it for anyone within a short distance of Galveston.

11. Galveston Is Steeped in Rich Maritime History

Galveston is a city rich in history, having first been settled by Indigenous Natives of the Akokisa and Karankawa tribes before the Europeans arrived in the 1600s. Over the next several centuries, Galveston became a hub for maritime trade, eventually attracting such notable figures as French buccaneer Jean Lafitte. All that being said, history buffs will delight at the chance to visit Galveston, taking in some of the numerous historical sights around town—like Lafitte’s personal hideaway at Maison Rouge or the Michael B. Menard House, named after one of Galveston’s original American settlers. Even those who don’t care for history will find these areas fascinating.

I only book a Disney cruise if it's going to the company's private island, Castaway Cay

  • I've taken eight Disney cruises, and I always book a sailing that stops at  Castaway Cay .
  • Castaway Cay is the company's private island and I love its adults-only beach area.
  • You can buy exclusive merch on the island and see Disney characters in special themed costumes.

Insider Today

Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line.

Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call.

Here's why you might want to do the same.

I love that the ship docks right at the island, so there are no tender ships involved

One of the biggest perks of Castaway Cay is that the ship docks right at the island.

Some other cruise line's private islands, like Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, don't have a dock, so cruisers must take tender ships (small boats) from the cruise ship to the island.

I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me.

Getting around the island is easy with the complimentary tram

Castaway Cay is about 1,000 acres — though not all of it's developed — so it can take a while to talk to and from the ship to different spots on the island.

Fortunately, the island has a complimentary tram that I always use to get around the island.

The tram takes cruisers from a station near the ship to two other tram stops for the family beaches, and one tram stop at the adults-only beach .

This makes getting around the island with all of my beach gear easy.

Related stories

Speaking of gear, at Castaway Cay, cruisegoers can borrow free towels as soon as they get off of the ship. There are plenty of towel-return stations around the island, so I also never have to carry wet, sandy towels back on the ship.

I always stop to see the Disney characters in their cute beachwear

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay.

Characters usually meet in the morning from around 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., but exact times can always be found on the Disney Cruise Line app.

The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes. That would never happen in a Disney park.

And if you're a fellow character hunter like me, Mickey and the gang all have Castaway Cay exclusive outfits, which are adorable and make for great family photos.

I always take advantage of every chance to hang out at the adults-only beach

One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. On the island, that spot is Serenity Bay Beach.

This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me.

Plus, just off Serenity Bay Beach is a fun beachside bar serving up drinks and snacks.

There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. My favorite things on the lunch menu are the ribs and macaroni salad .

Before returning to the ship, I send a postcard from the island and check out the special merchandise

I always make a point to stop in at the various shops near the family beach to see the Castaway Cay merchandise. On a recent trip, the shops had everything from spirit jerseys and T-shirts to Christmas ornaments and swimsuits.

And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home.

The postcards I use can be found in the desk drawer of Disney Cruise Line staterooms, and are free to take. If you don't want to send the cute postcards off, you can also keep them as souvenirs.
