Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is “devastated” following the death of a fan at her Eras Tour concert in Brazil on Friday (Nov. 17).

The pop superstar shared a handwritten note on social media after the show at Rio de Janeiro’s Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos to express her sorrow over the loss.

Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer Honors Taylor Swift: ‘Welcome to Brasil’

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” Swift wrote on her Instagram Story . “I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”

Trending on Billboard

The concert’s organizer, T4F, wrote on Instagram that paramedics attended to the woman after she reported feeling unwell. She was first taken to a first aid area and then to a hospital, where she passed away shortly after, according to the Brazilian promoter.

Some concert-goers complained that they were not allowed to bring in water bottles to the stadium despite a record-breaking heat wave in Rio, the Associated Press reports . Temperatures reached 102.4 degrees Fahrenheit in the city on Friday.

During the show, her first of three at the venue, Swift paused her performance to request water for a group of fans who indicated they needed it.

“There’s people that need water right here, maybe 30, 35, 40 feet back,” the singer said, as seen in fan-captured footage on X. “So whoever is in charge of giving them that, just make sure that happens. Can I get a signal that you know where they are?”

On Saturday morning (Nov. 18), T4F shared a statement on Instagram noting that free water will be distributed at designated areas of Swift’s concert and that a limited number of sealed water containers will be allowed into the stadium.

Swift is scheduled to continue her Eras Tour at Rio’s Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos on Saturday and Sunday.

Taylor Swift Eras Tour Tragedy: Cause of Death Revealed for Brazilian Fan Who Passed Out During Show

Ana clara benevides, 23, was pronounced dead at a local hospital just hours after falling ill two songs into taylor swift's nov. 17 eras tour stop in rio de janeiro..

Heat exhaustion caused the death of the Brazilian fan who died hours after  she passed out during a Taylor Swift  concert in Rio de Janeiro last month, according to a forensics report obtained Dec. 27 by the Associated Press .

Ana Clara Benevides Machado  was pronounced dead at Salgado Filho Hospital on Nov. 17 after falling ill at Nilton Santos Stadium as Swift launched into the second song of her Eras Tour playlist, "Cruel Summer." Videos and photos posted to social media showed that fans had been lined up for hours before heading into the venue.

The report stated that she suffered cardiorespiratory arrest due to heat exposure and neither preexisting conditions or substance use factored into her death.

Authorities guessed at the time that heat—the reported high in Rio that day was 105 degrees—played a role in the young woman's death. An initial police report, per NBC News , stated that there were no traces of drugs or alcohol in her system and heat exhaustion caused cardiovascular and respiratory issues. She was treated at an on-site medical station before being transported to the hospital.

Swift ended up postponing the following night's show , citing the sweltering conditions.

"I can't even tell you how devastated I am by this," Swift wrote on her Instagram Stories  after the Nov. 17 show. "There's very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young. I'm not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it."

She concluded, "I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil."

When Swift returned to the stage Nov. 20, she didn't expressly mention the tragedy, but she did add "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" as one of her surprise songs—which fans around the world quickly took to be a tribute to Benevides .

The 34-year-old also met with Benevides' family , who were spotted in a VIP area at her Nov. 26 show.

"I lost my only daughter, a happy and intelligent girl," Benevides' father, Weiny Machado , told  Folha de São Paulo  (per a translation from Portuguese into English) the day after she died. " She was about to graduate in psychology next April, saving money. I have no words to express my pain. She left home to fulfill a dream and came back dead."

After the tragedy, event organizer Time 4 Fun announced plans to distribute free water at all future shows in Rio (Swift fans had noted online that, on the day Benevides died, they hadn't been allowed to bring their own water bottles into the venue) and said multiple medical stations and mobile ICUs would be set up around the stadium.

In announcing that the show would  not go on Nov. 18, citing "extreme temperatures" in Rio, Swifted noted in a statement, "The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first."

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Taylor Swift postponed an Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro Saturday after a 23-year-old fan died during her Friday night show, according to a message posted on the singer’s Instagram.

“I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio,” the singer said in a handwritten note on Instagram. “The safety and well being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first.”

The cause of death for Ana Clara Benevides Machado, the young woman who sought medical attention at Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium during Friday’s show, has not yet been announced. The office of Rio’s public prosecutor opened a criminal investigation and said Benevides’ body was being examined.

Benevides’ death shook many people in Brazil. She had taken her first flight ever to travel from the country’s center-west region to Rio to see her favorite musician. She also created a WhatsApp group to keep her family updated, sending photos and videos every step of the way, family members told online news site G1.

Fans and politicians reacted to her death with outrage, speculating it was linked to extreme heat.

Concertgoers complained they were not allowed to take water into the stadium despite the stifling weather. As temperatures continued to rise Saturday and with two more shows to go at the time, federal authorities announced that free water would now be made available at concerts and other large events.

One of Benevides’ friends, who also went to the concert, told local outlets they had both been given water while waiting to enter the stadium.

In a previous statement shared on her social media Saturday morning, Swift said she had a “shattered heart.”

“There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young,” the singer wrote of the young woman.

The show’s organizer, Time4Fun, said on Instagram that paramedics attended to Benevides after she reported feeling unwell. She was taken to a first-aid center and then to a hospital, where she died an hour later, the statement from the Brazilian live entertainment company said.

Fans who attended the Friday show said they were not allowed to bring water bottles into the stadium even though Rio and most of Brazil have had record-breaking temperatures this week amid a dangerous and lasting heat wave . The daytime high in Rio on Friday was 39.1 degrees Celsius (102.4 degrees Fahrenheit), but it felt much hotter.

Apparent temperature — a combination of temperature and humidity — hit 59 C (138 F) Friday morning in Rio, the highest index ever recorded there.

Elizabeth Morin, 26, who recently moved to Rio from Los Angeles, described “sauna-like” conditions inside the stadium.

“It was extremely hot. My hair got so wet from sweat as soon as I came in,” she said. “There was a point at which I had to check my breathing to make sure I wasn’t going to pass out.”

Morin said she drank plenty of water but saw “a good amount of people looking distressed” and others “yelling for water.” She said she was able to get water from the sidelines of the area she was standing in, but that water was a lot harder to access from other parts of the stadium, “especially if you were concerned about losing your specific position.”

During the show, Swift paused her performance and asked from the stage for water to be brought to a group of people who had successfully caught the singer’s attention, according to Morin.

“They were holding up their phones saying ‘We need water,’” she recalled.

Two other concertgoers interviewed by The Associated Press said they witnessed people feeling unwell from the heat during the show.

On her way to Rio, Benevides sent a video to family members that was broadcast by TV channel Globo News, telling them: “Mom, look at the plane, it’s moving. Mom, I’m on the plane. My God in heaven! I’m happy!”

Then before the concert, she posted a video of herself on Instagram wearing a Taylor Swift T-shirt and friendship bracelets, seeking shade under an umbrella while waiting in line to enter the stadium.

Like her, thousands of fans waited hours in the sun before being allowed inside.

She told her followers while fanning her face that she’d arrived at 11 a.m. — the show began around 7:30 p.m. — and was “still in the mess.”

Benevides’ friend, Daniele Menin, who attended the concert with her, told online news site G1 that her friend passed out at the beginning of the concert, as Swift performed her second song, “Cruel Summer.”

“We always said that when (Taylor Swift) came to Brazil we would find a way to go. The ticket was very expensive, but we still found a way,” Menin told G1.

Justice Minister Flávio Dino said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that going forward in Brazil, “water bottles for personal use, in suitable material, will be allowed” at concerts and festivals and that show producers must provide free and easily accessible drinking water.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes wrote on X that the “loss of a young woman’s life ... is unacceptable” and demanded more brigades and ambulances at future shows.

Still, the concert was postponed.

“We are on the train. And everyone is so disappointed,” said Hely Olivares, a 41 year-old Venezuelan who had traveled from Panama to see the artist.

Before postponing the concert, Swift wrote on Instagram that she would not address the death from stage “because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it.”

“I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends,” she said.

A group launched an online petition Saturday morning calling for a “Benevides Law” to “make water in events mandatory.”

The petition garnered more than 150,000 signatures in just a few hours. Federal authorities announced that free water would be made available at all future concerts.

In a handwritten note shared on her social media, Swift said she had a “shattered heart."

“There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young,” the singer wrote of the young woman.

He later announced that "water bottles for personal use, in suitable material, will be allowed" at concerts and other events and that show producers must provide free and easily accessible drinking water.

Before the show, Benevides posted a video of herself on Instgram wearing a Taylor Swift T-shirt and waiting in line to enter the stadium while seeking shade under an umbrella. Like her, thousands of fans waited hours in the sun before being allowed inside.

“I Feel Overwhelmed by Grief”: Taylor Swift Gives Emotional Tribute to Fallen Fan

By Eve Batey

Taylor Swift fans at a concert in Rio de Janeiro

After a Taylor Swift fan died Friday during a sweltering Rio de Janeiro stop in her Eras Tour, the singer took to Instagram to express her grief. But Rio's mayor is demanding more than platitudes, and is seeking changes to how concerts are run in the Brazilian city.

The concert was the first of three Swift shows planned for Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos, a 16-year-old, 70,000-seat venue in Rio. The region is experiencing a record-breaking heat wave, according to the Weather Channel , with a daily high of around 103 degrees Fahrenheit, but with a heat index that makes it feel like 125. As Estádio Nilton Santos is an open-air stadium, that means fans are unprotected from the evening heat, which typically drops from daytime by only 15 degrees.

Those are the circumstances faced by 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado, a Swift fan who collapsed at Friday's show, event organizers Time for Fun announced via an Instagram post written in Portuguese.

“Last night, Ana Clara felt unwell and was promptly attended to by the team of firefighters and paramedics, being taken to the medical center at the Nilton Santos Stadium for first aid protocol,” the post reads.

"Given the situation, the medical team chose to transfer her to Salgado Filho Hospital, where, after almost an hour of emergency care, she unfortunately died. To the family and friends of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, our sincere condolences."

Taylor Swift performs onstage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos on November 17, 2023 in Rio de Janeiro.

Even before Machado's name was known, Swift had announced her passing, in an Instagram story set to expire on Saturday evening. “I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show," Swift wrote.

“I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young." (Vanity Fair contacted a Swift representative for comment, but has not received a response as of publication time.)

Brazil's mayor, Eduardo Paes , called Machado's death “unacceptable” in a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter). Writing in Portuguese, he said that he has “ordered the municipality's Executive Chief of Operations to demand action with the production of the show,” including plans to keep early-arriving fans out of the sun's glare, water distribution points throughout the stadium, and additional ambulances at the stadium.

Flávio Dino , Brazil’s justice minister, announced emergency rules for tonight's show on X that also include increased access to water for fans. In addition, his “team is heading to the location of today's event" to monitor safety and conditions, a spokesperson said via statement.

Time for Fun says that they're hustling to comply with the new rules, announcing through Instagram that free water will be available at all stadium access points, and that rules against outside food and water will be lifted given the heat wave. (Those items must be sealed; metal, aluminum, and Thermos bottles are prohibited.)

One thing concert attendees won't see is an acknowledgment by Swift of Machado's death. “I’m not going to be able to speak about this from the stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it,” Swift said via Instagram.

"I want to say now I feel this loss deeply, and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil.”

Swift's last Rio show is on Sunday, Nov. 19. She returns to the Brazilian stage on Friday, Nov. 24, for a three-day stint at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, where the weather is currently expected to be stormy with a high of 75.

Taylor Swift posted a note on Instagram Stories honoring a fan who died at the singer-songwriter’s Eras Tour concert Friday night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young,” Swift wrote.

According to the show’s organizer, Time4Fun (T4F), Machado was attended to by paramedics before being rushed to a first-aid center and then a hospital, where she died an hour later. Machado’s friend, Daniele Menin, told Brazilian news site G1 that Benevides passed out during Swift’s second song of the concert, “Cruel Summer.”

During the concert, Swift made sure to keep her fans hydrated by pausing the show and asking staff to bring concertgoers water.

After Machado’s death, Brazil’s Justice Minister Flávio Dino announced via X that water bottles for personal use would now be allowed in the stadium.

Swift is scheduled to perform two more shows in Rio this weekend.

After woman’s death at Taylor Swift concert, a search for accountability

Concertgoers waited for hours in temperatures that reached a heat index of 138 degrees to see Taylor Swift’s first show of the year in Brazil. Many of them were anticipating the concert experience of their dreams: Swift’s Eras Tour had finally come to their country after crashing ticket servers in the United States and inspiring its own movie .

They didn’t expect to leave feeling as if they’d survived a nightmare.

The Style section

Nilton Santos stadium felt to many like an oven. Some said event staff made them ditch their water bottles, fans and umbrellas at the gates. Inside, metal sheets covered part of the ground in the $400 VIP section, burning some people who tried to sit on them. Stifling air and growing throngs made it hard to breathe. Some had to pay $2 for a small cup of water, while others found themselves stuck in crowds too dense for vendors to reach.

Dehydrated fans chanted for water and held up signs pleading for help, hoping Swift would see them as she sang under colorful stage lights. The singer did, pausing her performance to tell staff to help distressed people, and once tossing a bottle out to the crowd herself.

Amid the chaos, an early-entry VIP ticket holder named Ana Clara Benevides Machado tried to enjoy herself. A friend remembered how the 23-year-old jumped, sang and cried when she saw Swift — then fainted in the middle of “Cruel Summer,” and died of cardiorespiratory arrest at a hospital. She was the only reported death from the show, but firefighters said more than 1,000 others had passed out by the end of the night.

A week later, the international Eras Tour appears to be back on track. Swift has performed more shows in Brazil, including two in the same stadium — even as the country has sought accountability in the wake of the Nov. 17 show, and the Brazilian company that organized the show, Time4Fun, is the subject of government and police investigations.

Serafim Abreu, the chief executive of Time4Fun, appeared to take some share of blame in a statement that also offered condolences and assistance to Benevides’s family.

“We recognize that we could have taken some additional alternative actions to all the others we did, such as creating shaded areas out of the stadium, changing the time initially scheduled for the shows [and] placing greater emphasis on allowing people to bring disposable water cups,” Abreu said in a video posted to the company’s Instagram page Thursday.

S wift’s team, meanwhile, has continued to work with Time4Fun on subsequent concerts in Brazil, according to promotional posts on the company’s social media accounts. The star was back at Nilton Santos stadium on Sunday, where she performed a piano version of the emotional ballad “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” for the first time on her tour, a gesture some fans saw as a way to honor Benevides.

No one in the Brazilian government or among Swift’s fan base that The Washington Post spoke to blamed the singer or her management team for the disaster. But some have criticized the megastar for not doing more to acknowledge the tragedy, beyond posting an Instagram message on the night of Benevides’s death — “it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show” — and postponing the next night’s performance because of the extreme temperatures.

In fan group chats and on social media, Swifties debated whether to protest with a moment of silence and “Justice for Ana” signs at Monday’s concert in Rio de Janeiro, but decided against it.

“ It is not Taylor’s fault. It is 100 percent the company’s fault, the company that organized the event,” said Maria Hortênsia Villasboas, a 29-year-old attendee. “But I think she should have helped the family. I know Taylor is devastated, but so is Ana’s family. Nothing will bring Ana Clara back, but some help from Taylor would be meaningful.”

In a statement, Benevides’s family said all the costs of their trip to Rio de Janeiro and the transfer of her body “were paid only with help of family, friends and a crowdfunding raised on the internet, without any collaboration of the event organizer, T4F, nor municipal and state public bodies in Rio de Janeiro.”

A person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak freely said Swift and her team have communicated with and donated to Benevides’s parents, and the family was invited to meet the pop singer at a show this weekend.

It’s unclear what safety precautions, if any, the Eras Tour staff implemented before the deadly show began, or how Time4Fun was selected to organize Swift’s shows in the country. A person with knowledge of the situation, however, said Swift’s team did not directly hire the company. Rodrigo Pinotti, a spokesperson for Time4Fun, said the company’s contract prohibits it from discussing who hired the event organizers and how.

Brazil’s National Consumer Secretariat launched an investigation after the concert to determine which party, or parties, needed to be fined for violating fans’ rights as consumers. Based on the evidence so far, National Consumer Secretary Wadih Damous said Time4Fun is a subject in the case.

The agency is specifically investigating how the company distributed water at the concert and its use of metal sheet flooring, which could have increased the heat index inside the stadium. (Pinotti said metal sheets are commonly used for concert flooring to support the weight of the stage, lighting and speakers and to withstand the weight of the cranes and forklifts used for setup.) Depending on “the severity of the facts, the failure itself and the damage caused,” Damous said, the responsible party could face up to a $2.6 million fine.

Police also opened an investigation this week into whether Time4Fun’s actions could be considered a crime that endangered attendees’ lives or health, police in Rio de Janeiro said.

Time4Fun is a well-known entertainment company in Latin America, and was once considered one of the top concert promoters by Billboard magazine . It offers services for event promotion; box office operation; food, beverage and merchandise sales; and the operation of the venue at live concerts, art exhibitions and sporting events, according to its website .

In a statement posted to Instagram, Time4Fun argued that “the ban on entry of water bottles into stadiums is a requirement made by public bodies.”

That’s technically true. The country’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security prohibits venue entry with items that can be thrown and injure a concertgoer, such as capped water bottles. The rule serves as a common safety measure at venues in Brazil and around the world. But some Brazilian music festivals, including Rock in Rio and the Town, have let fans in with less hazardous capless water bottles.

“In developing markets, both local and international content providers do not have the scale and/or physical structure to promote their own content and therefore seek to form partnerships with local event promoters, who have proven execution capacity and financial capacity, in order to enable quality events on a viable economic scale,” the Time4Fun investor website states.

To prevent another disaster, government officials announced Nov. 18 emergency measures including increased medical presence and expanded access to drinking water at subsequent Eras Tour shows, which Time4Fun agreed to comply with. A government-issued ordinance published Wednesday enshrined many of the new practices, allowing people to enter events with bottled water for personal use and requiring the provision of easily accessible hydration stations free inside venues.

B enevides’s death has sparked increased awareness of concert casualties, including a woman who died after injuring herself at Robbie Williams ’s Australia concert on Nov. 16, a day before Swift’s first concert in Brazil. The woman had tried to step over a row of seats at the end of the show and lost her footing, a spokesperson for the venue said.

In 2021, Travis Scott’s Astroworld concert in Houston became one of the deadliest concerts in U.S. history after 10 people died and hundreds more were injured in a crowd surge.

In the case of the Nov. 17 concert — linked to an extreme heat wave that was widely known of in Brazil — it’s possible that better preparation could have prevented tragedy.

Kristie L. Ebi, a professor at the University of Washington’s Center for Health and the Global Environment, emphasized that heat-related illnesses and deaths are preventable. But doing so requires coordination among community leaders, event organizers and emergency personnel to monitor attendees and let them know how they can protect themselves.

Many major cities such as Miami, Phoenix and Los Angeles have hired heat officers, personnel who are dedicated to preparing for extreme heat events and ensuring information reaches everyone who will be affected, Ebi said. Early warning and response systems, which alert to extreme weather, can also be a proactive way to inform communities.

With climate change, she said, combating heat illness and death is increasingly necessary.

“According to climatologists, more of these heat waves are already occurring. Heat waves have increased in frequency, intensity and duration,” she said. “And the projections all indicate that this will continue.”

Meanwhile, in Brazil, many who attended the Nov. 17 concert say they’re wrestling with trauma.

“I cried a lot after the show,” said Mariana Luz Dantas, a 22-year-old veterinary student. “There was a feeling of disrespect toward us, anger and also fear that Taylor would never want to return to Brazil again.”

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has spoken out about a fan who died before her Eras Tour show started in Brazil on Friday.

The singer-songwriter took to her Instagram Story to share a statement, which read, “I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”

Swift just kicked off the international leg of her Eras Tour last week in Latin America, beginning with stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She then headed to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, for night one of three on Friday.

Though few details have been released surrounding what led to the fan’s death, Swift’s statement follows videos circulating on social media of the singer tossing water bottles to fans from the stage during the concert in Brazil. People on social media are also claiming the stadium where the show was held banned fans from bringing in water bottles amid temperatures rising to nearly 100 degrees Friday.

Swift could also be seen in a video at one point, pausing the show to make sure fans get water. “There’s people that need water right here, maybe 30, 35, 40 feet back,” she said to the crowd. “So whoever is in charge of giving them that, just make sure that happens. Can I get a signal that you know where they are?”

Due to the extreme temperatures in Brazil, Swift posted to her Instagram Story on Saturday ahead of her second show, that “the decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show.” The Grammy winner didn’t when it would be rescheduled for. “The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first,” she concluded.

Taylor Swift postponed an Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro Saturday after a 23-year-old fan died during her Friday night show, according to a message posted on the singer's Instagram.

"I'm writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight's show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio," the singer said in a handwritten note posted on her Instagram account.

"The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers and crew has to and always will come first."

The cause of death for Ana Clara Benevides Machado, the young woman who sought medical attention at Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium during Friday's show, has not yet been announced. The office of Rio's public prosecutor opened a criminal investigation and said Benevides' body was being examined.

Benevides' death shook Brazil, with fans and politicians speculating it was linked to extreme heat.

The young woman had taken her first flight ever to travel to Rio from the country's centre-west region. She also created a WhatsApp group to keep her family updated, sending photos and videos every step of the way, family members told online news site G1.

Concertgoers complained they were not allowed to take water into the stadium on Friday, the first of Swift's three planned shows in Rio, despite the stifling weather.

As temperatures continued to rise Saturday, federal authorities announced that free water would now be made available at concerts and other large events.

A crowd of people sit and stand underneath umbrellas, shielding themselves from the sun and heat.

One of Benevides' friends, who also went to the concert, told local outlets they had both been given water while waiting to enter the stadium.

In a handwritten note shared on her social media, Swift said she had a "shattered heart."

"There's very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young," the singer wrote of the young woman.

Fans say water bottles not allowed into venue

The show's organizer, Time4Fun, said on Instagram that paramedics attended to Benevides after she reported feeling unwell.

She was taken to a first-aid centre and then to a hospital, where she died an hour later, the statement from the Brazilian live entertainment company said.

Fans who attended the Friday show said they were not allowed to bring water bottles into the stadium even though most of Brazil, including Rio, have had record-breaking temperatures this week amid a dangerous and lasting heat wave.

A woman holds up a large bottle of water above her head, pouring it over her face.

The daytime high in Rio on Friday was 39.1 C, but it felt much hotter.

Apparent temperature — a combination of temperature and humidity — hit 59 C Friday morning in Rio, the highest index ever recorded there.

Elizabeth Morin who recently moved to Rio from Los Angeles, described "sauna-like" conditions inside the stadium.

"It was extremely hot. My hair got so wet from sweat as soon as I came in," said the 26-year-old.

"There was a point at which I had to check my breathing to make sure I wasn't going to pass out."

People in the background hold umbrellas to shield themselves from the heat and sun. A poster of a woman licking a cone of ice cream is in the foreground.

Morin said she drank plenty of water but saw "a good amount of people looking distressed" and others yelling for water.

She said she was able to get water from the sidelines of the area she was standing in, but that water was a lot harder to access from other parts of the stadium, "especially if you were concerned about losing your specific position."

During the show, Swift paused her performance and asked from the stage for water to be brought to a group of people who had successfully caught the singer's attention, according to Morin.

"They were holding up their phones saying 'We need water,'" she recalled.

Brazilian authorities investigate

Two other concertgoers interviewed by The Associated Press said they witnessed people feeling unwell from the heat during the show.

Justice Minister Flávio Dino said Saturday on X, formerly known as Twitter, that "water bottles for personal use, in suitable material, will be allowed" at concerts and festivals and that show producers must provide free and easily accessible drinking water.

State prosecutors said in a statement they would "monitor measures that seek to avoid new problems and guarantee the protection of the health of the public."

In a video Benevides sent to family members and broadcast by TV channel Globo News, she told them: "Mom, look at the plane, it's moving. Mom, I'm on the plane. My God in heaven! I'm happy!"

Before the show, Benevides posted a video of herself on Instagram wearing a Taylor Swift T-shirt and friendship bracelets, seeking shade under an umbrella while waiting in line to enter the stadium.

Like her, thousands of fans waited hours in the sun before being allowed inside.

She told her followers while fanning her face that she'd arrived at 11 a.m. — the show began around 7:30 p.m. — and was "still in the mess."

Benevides' friend, Daniele Menin, who attended the concert with her, told online news site G1 that her friend passed out as Swift performed "Cruel Summer," the second song of the show.

"We always said that when [Taylor Swift] came to Brazil we would find a way to go. The ticket was very expensive, but we still found a way," Menin told G1.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes said on X that the "loss of a young woman's life ... is unacceptable."

While authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death, Paes wrote the municipality will demand Saturday that the show's production company provide new water distribution points, more brigades and ambulances, and advance entrance to the show by one hour.

Swift, in her messages on social media, said she wouldn't be able to speak about this from the stage.

"I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it," Swift wrote. "I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends."

Fan Dies at Taylor Swift Concert in Rio’s Extreme Heat

Many fans fell sick at the show, where temperatures broke records and concertgoers complained of a lack of water. The pop star postponed Saturday’s show.

Jack Nicas reported from Buenos Aires, and Leonardo Coelho and Flávia Milhorance from Rio de Janeiro.

One fan died and many others fainted at Taylor Swift’s concert on Friday in Rio de Janeiro, where temperatures felt like nearly 140 degrees Fahrenheit, a record for the city, and fans said they struggled to get water.

Ana Clara Benevides, 23, lost consciousness at the concert and later was pronounced dead of cardiac arrest after being taken to the hospital, according to city officials and the Brazilian company organizing the show, Time for Fun.

There were widespread complaints about the extreme heat and lack of water from fans inside the open-air soccer stadium, where Ms. Swift was performing for more than 60,000 people on Friday in the first of three sold-out shows in Rio this weekend as part of the South American stretch of her record-breaking Eras Tour.

Hours before she was set to take the stage on Saturday night, Ms. Swift announced on social media that the show was being postponed because of the extreme temperatures in Rio.

“The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers and crew has to and always will come first,” she wrote.

Ms. Swift’s fans said on social media that they were prohibited from bringing water into the stadium on Friday, while other fans said vendors struggled to reach the people near the stage. Videos showed Ms. Swift throwing a water bottle to one fan and instructing stadium staff to get water to others as people in the crowd chanted for water.

The tragedy paired two of the year’s major story lines: rising temperatures and the hysteria for Ms. Swift’s global tour.

In Argentina, where Ms. Swift played last week, some fans camped out for more than five months to try to get a spot closer to the stage. In Brazil, a day after Ms. Benevides’s death, fans lined up early for entry to Saturday’s show even as temperatures continued to soar. It is the second show Ms. Swift has had to postpone because of extreme weather in the past week — her Nov. 10 show in Buenos Aires was moved to Nov. 12.

In an online post, Ms. Swift said she was “devastated” by her fan’s death. “I’m not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it,” she said.

Wadih Damous, the head of Brazil’s consumer protection agency, said his agency had ordered the concert’s organizers to provide free water at various locations at Ms. Swift’s shows on Saturday and Sunday.

“The decision to prevent thousands of people from drinking water in 60-degree Celsius heat is insane and irresponsible,” Mr. Damous said. He said the government would investigate Time for Fun.

The company said on Saturday that it would add staff, provide free water and allow fans to enter the stadium with water and food.

By the time Saturday’s show was canceled, thousands of fans had shown up at the stadium in Rio anyway, and as the crowds left the area, unrest linked to gang activity erupted, a representative for the military police said on Saturday night.

Video footage on social media showed panicked fans running and officers with guns nearby. Another vide o published online by a local news outlet showed some people hunkering down near the cash register of a Burger King restaurant. The crowd is “completely psychologically unstable,” the police spokesman said, but stressed that no injuries, arrests or robberies had been reported so far.

Parts of Brazil have been suffering under a sweltering heat wave this week, with temperatures breaking records and the national meteorological institute issuing safety alerts to 15 states. In Rio, temperatures surpassed 106 degrees Fahrenheit, or 41 degrees Celsius, on Friday. The heat index, a measure of how hot the air feels because of humidity, hit 139 degrees Fahrenheit, a record for the city.

It appears almost certain that 2023 will be Earth’s hottest year on record , with global temperatures hitting record highs in each of the past five months, from June through October. Scientists have said that the year’s record heat has been driven by the continued emissions of heat-trapping gases, mostly from the burning of oil, gas and coal, as well as the return of El Niño, a cyclical weather pattern.

Brazilian government institutions have said that since June, El Niño has changed the region’s weather patterns, increasing temperatures in the Pacific Ocean near South America by three degrees Celsius, while bringing more rain to the south and droughts to the north.

Felipe Galvão, 28, a systems analyst, was on the field level near the stage on Friday when people started getting sick from the heat even before the concert started. By the time the show began, so many people had gotten sick and left their places that he was able to reach the railing along the stage.

“I’ve been going to concerts since 2011, but I’ve never experienced anything like this,” he said. “There was little staff and unfortunately they couldn’t do much for the fans. You could tell that even they were a little lost.”

Taylor Swift mourns death of fan before concert in Brazil: 'I feel overwhelmed by grief'

"I can't even tell you how devastated I am by this," the singer wrote.

She joined EW in August 2022.

Taylor Swift is mourning a fan who died before her Eras Tour concert at the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Friday.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” Swift said in a handwritten letter published on her Instagram Story. “I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this."

A statement from the concert’s organizers, Time4Fun, posted on social media identified the fan as 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado. In their post, which was written in Portuguese, the organizers said Benevides Machado had begun feeling unwell and that first responders at the stadium had attended to her before she was transferred to Hospital Salgado Filho where she died.

Swift, who played the first of three shows she'll perform at the venue on Friday, acknowledged that she had “very little information” about the incident other than Benevides Machado was “so incredibly beautiful and far too young.” She added that she would not be speaking about the tragedy at the concert “because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it.”

“I want to say now that I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends,” the singer concluded. “This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil.”

Swift followed her initial remarks with another handwritten letter posted on her Instagram Story on Saturday afternoon, announcing that she would cancel her concert that evening: "I'm writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight's show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio. The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first."

While Benevides Machado’s cause of death has not been revealed, fans were reportedly not allowed to bring water into the venue despite an ongoing heat wave, the Associated Press reported , citing local media outlets. Footage taken at the event and shared on social media showed Swift pausing her show to ask that water be distributed to fans who were signaling for assistance by raising their phones in the air.

"There's people that need water, right here," Swift can be heard saying as she stands and points at a section of the audience. “So whoever is in charge of giving them that, please come and make sure that that happens. Can I get a signal that you know where they are? Do you see the phones?”

An additional clip from another concert attendee that seems to have been taken around the same time shows Swift pointing out the fans again. “Sorry, it's just it's very hot,” she said, “So if somebody says they need water when it's this hot, they really need it.”

As fans began to chant “water,” Swift told the crowd, “We don’t need to chant. It’s totally fine. But we just need to get water to them.” She then seemed to have a conversation with someone in the crowd who confirmed that water was being delivered.

Justice Minister Flávio Dino  announced on social media that his administration would be adopting "emergency rules" that address access to water "at shows and other public events" following the incident. He published the full ordinance online on Saturday.

The same day, Time4Fun announced in an Instagram statement , written in Portuguese, that sealed water and food would be allowed in the venue and that they would be providing free water in the queues and increasing the number of free water distribution points during the concerts. They added that they have increased the number of service staff members and medical stations at the event.

Taylor Swift fan dies before 'The Eras Tour' concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ana Clara Benevides Machado was helped by paramedics before dying in a hospital.

A 23-year-old Taylor Swift fan died at her Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, according to the show's organizers in Brazil.

The show's organizers, Time4Fun, confirmed the death of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, in a post on social media.

Benevides Machado felt unwell and was attended to by firefighters and paramedics at the concert. She was taken to the medical station at the Nilton Santos Stadium for first aid. Swift announced on social media that Saturday's show would be postponed "due to the extreme temperatures in Rio." Expressing that "the safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and will always come first."

Temperatures reached a high of 105 degrees on Friday, with a heat index of 123 degrees, according to Radar Meteorológico do Sumaré. Brazil has been experiencing a heat wave unusual for the spring, according to the National Meteorological Institute.

In a handwritten note shared on her social media Friday evening, Swift said she had a "shattered heart."

"I can't believe I'm writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can't even tell you how devastated I am by this. There's very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young," Swift said.

"I'm not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it. I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil," Swift added.

Taylor Swift Says She Is 'Devastated' After Fan Dies Shortly Before Brazil Eras Tour Show

"I feel this loss deeply and my heart goes out to her family and friends," the singer said

Taylor Swift is speaking out after a tragedy took place at her latest Eras Tour show.

The singer, 33, shared a handwritten note on her Instagram Story Friday, in which she said that her heart was “shattered” by the death of a fan ahead of her concert at Estadio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

One of the event organizers, Time for Fun, announced in a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, that the fan who died was 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado. In the post, written in Portuguese, they said that Benevides Machado had felt unwell at the venue and was attended to by first responders, before being transferred to Salagdo Filho Hospital, where she died.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but it’s with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” Swift began her social media statement.

“I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this," she continued. "There’s very little information I have other than the fact she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”

Swift, who played the first of three shows at Estadio Nilton Santos on Friday, added that she would not be able to speak about the fan’s death during her performances because of the “grief” she felt.

“I’m not going to be able to speak about this from the stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it," she wrote. "I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my heart goes out to her family and friends."

“This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” Swift concluded her heartfelt message.

Thiago Fernandes, a friend of Benevides, told local news outlet Fohla De S. Paulo , "I want Ana to appear on the screens at Taylor's show."

He also posted a tribute to his friend on Instagram Friday. A translation of his post, which was written in Portuguese, said, in part, “I just can't believe your [sic] gone I can't accept that. We talked about this show so many times, and how I wish I was with you."

Fan footage captured and shared on X earlier in the night from the show showed Swift pausing her performance to ask that water be brought to fans.

"There's people that need water, right here," Swift said as she stood and pointed at a section of the crowd where fans appeared to be waving empty water bottles in the air. "So whoever is in charge of giving them that, please come and make sure that that happens."

Another video posted by a concertgoer from around the same moment showed Swift again pointing out where the fans in the crowd who needed water were.

"Sorry, it's just it's very hot, so if somebody says they need water when it's this hot, they really need it," she said from the stage.

"We don't need to chant, it's totally fine. But, we just need to get water to them," Swift told the crowd, before appearing to speak to someone in the audience and confirming that water was being brought to those who needed it.

Swift's latest concert took place after she received a warm welcome to Brazil for the latest leg of her Eras Tour.

Following recent shows in Buenos Aires — where she was supported by boyfriend Travis Kelce — the singer arrived in Sao Paulo on Thursday to a projection on the city's famous Christ the Redeemer statue.

A photo posted on X showed the impressive projection — a white shirt that featured symbols found in Swift's songs, including a scarf, which seemed to reference her Red hit "All Too Well" and a bow and arrow, which appeared to reference her Lover track "The Archer." The projection also included the names of Brazil's states.

In a video posted to X , which has been translated from Portuguese to English, Mayor Eduardo Paes said that on Thursday, a projection would be shown on the well-known statue and compared the singer's presence in Brazil to that of Madonna and Michael Jackson.

"We will properly honor Taylor Swift and her arrival to Carioca territory tonight," he said in the video, adding, "Welcome, Taylor Swift."

Taylor Swift meets family of fan who died after falling ill at Brazil Eras Tour concert

At taylor swift's nov. 26 show, the singer appeared to meet the family of ana clara benevides machado — a fan who died at the hospital after falling ill at an eras tour concert earlier this month, by elyse dupre | e online • published november 27, 2023.

Taylor Swift had a moving moment off the stage at her show in São Paulo, Brazil.

As seen in a photo shared on social media, the singer appeared to meet the family of Ana Clara Benevides Machado , a 23-year-old fan who passed away after falling ill at an Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro earlier this month.

The image seemed to show Ana Clara's loved ones wearing T-shirts with her face on it and gathering around Swift as they posed for a picture. A video posted online also appeared to show the family members standing in a VIP section at the Nov. 26 event.

Their attendance comes nine days after Ana Clara attended Swift's concert at Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Nov. 17. In a statement translated from Portuguese to English, organizer T4F (Time for Fun) said Ana Clara "felt unwell and was promptly attended to" by first responders, with her "being taken to the medical center at the Nilton Saltos Stadium for first aid protocol."

"Given the situation," the statement continued, "the medical team chose to transfer her to Salgado Filho Hospital, where, after almost an hour of emergency care, she unfortunately died. To the family and friends of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, our sincere condolences."

According to local outlet G1 , the Rio Municipal Health Department shared that Ana Clara suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and that her cause of death—which has yet to be revealed—will be certified by the Instituto Médico Legal (IML).

After learning of Ana Clara's death, Swift expressed her heartbreak .

"I can't believe I'm writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show," the Grammy winner wrote on Instagram Stories Nov. 17. "I can't even tell you how devastated I am by this. There's very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young."

"I'm not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it," she added. "I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil."

According to NBC News , a spokesperson for the Civil Police Department of Rio de Janeiro announced on Nov. 22 that its consumer delegations department launched an investigation into T4F in regards to "the crime of endangering the life and health" of concert attendees.

The concert took place amid a heat wave in Rio de Janeiro. According to NBC News, T4F CEO Serafim Abreu acknowledged in a Nov. 23 Instagram video that there were "alternative" steps the organizer could have taken amid the heat and apologized to "all who did not have the best possible experience."

"We know the enormous responsibility we have to organize an event of this scale," he said in part, per the outlet's translation, "which is why we did not economize in our efforts or resources to follow the best global practices in our industry to guarantee the comfort and safety of all."

And Ana Clara's father Weiny Machado has called for answers — including over whether attendees were allowed to bring in water bottles.

T4F stated in a Nov. 18 Instagram post that "the ban on entry of water bottles into stadiums is a requirement made by public bodies and that we do not carry out the marketing of drinks and food," while National Consumer Secretary Wadih Damous tweeted that same day an order for T4F to ensure water access at all of Swift's shows in Brazil.

"I want it to be determined whether they were in fact prohibited from bringing water, whether there was negligence in providing assistance. I know that the singer was handing out water to her fans, and that is absurd for an event of this size," he said in a Nov. 18 interview with local outlet Folha de S.Paulo , appearing to reference videos of Swift directing crews to provide water to concertgoers.

"Nothing will bring my daughter back, but I hope that, if negligence is confirmed, someone will be punished, so that this doesn't happen to anyone else."

Swift had also postponed her Nov. 18 show — explaining on Instagram Stories this was "due to the extreme temperatures in Rio" and noting, "The safety and well being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first."

Taylor Swift said she was “overwhelmed by grief” after a 23-year-old fan died ahead of her “Eras Tour” concert in Brazil Friday night.

The “Anti-Hero” hitmaker, 33, revealed the tragedy and mourned her fan’s death after she performed the first of three nights at Rio de Janeiro’s Estádio Nilton Santos.

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” the 12-time Grammy winner wrote on her Instagram Story .

“I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”

The fan was identified as Ana Clara Benevides, 23, according to Brazilian newspaper Fohla de S Paulo

The outlet noted that Benevides sat near the stage railing and suffered a cardiac arrest after fainting as a result of the sweltering heat.

The concertgoer’s friend, Thiago Fernandes, 22, said Benevides was revived for 40 minutes before suffering another cardiac arrest on the way to a nearby hospital.

Taylor Swift's statement on her Instagram Story.

Swift said she will not be speaking about the tragic news when she takes the stage Saturday night as she feels “overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it.”

“I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends,” she went on. “This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil.”

The news comes just hours after temperatures in Rio de Janeiro reached heights of 100 degrees across the country, prompting the singer to make sure her fans had access to water during her 3-hour performance.

Swift often paused her show several times Friday night to ask security to provide struggling fans with water bottles amid an excessive heat warning.

In a social media video , Swift can be seen waving down staffers as fans chanted, “Water, water, water.”

“There’s people that need water right here, maybe 30, 35, 40 feet back,” she says in one clip . “So whoever is in charge of giving them that, just make sure that happens. Can I get a signal that you know where they are?”

Swiftie who received Taylor Swift's hat at Cincinnati Eras Tour show dies at 16

eras tour death

Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of this story had an incorrect middle name for Allyson Anderson .

A 16-year-old Taylor Swift super fan who received a gift from the pop star during Swift's Eras Tour stop in Cincinnati this summer has died after five years of battling cancer.

Ally Anderson was diagnosed with stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer , in 2018. She died Nov. 13, according to People Magazine .

The Sunbury, Ohio, native attended the July 1 show at Paycor Stadium , where Swift danced down to the front of the stage and handed her the black hat that's part of the singer's "22" outfit.

The brief moment changed Ally's life, her mother, Patty Garner Anderson, told People.

"I hadn’t seen Ally smile and laugh like that in a very long time," her mom said.

The day after the concert, Ally posted her mom's video of the special exchange on TikTok.

"No words to describe what it felt like to be pulled from my seats to the floor. I knew immediately. Taylor was my first concert so many years ago. Honestly such a full circle moment," she wrote in the TikTok's caption.

Ally was a longtime Swift fan, her mother told People. The teenager's first concert was the singer's 1989 World Tour in 2015, when she was 8 years old.

Patty, who describes her daughter as "kind, loving, fierce," told People that Swift's music "brought light to Ally’s life" during her daughter's years-long battle with cancer. She added that Swift's songs were all her daughter listened to, "when she was still able to shower, when she was organizing her room, when we drove anywhere."

Ally even had a tattoo on her left forearm that read "And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow," lyrics from Swift's song, "The 1."

The teen also made connections with other Swifties battling childhood cancer, which gave her "an escape and a sense of belonging," according to her mom.

After the Eras Tour concert, Ally and her mom met Swift's mother, Andrea. Patty hopes she can one day thank Taylor and Andrea for granting her daughter such a special moment.

Ally died on Nov. 13, and her mother believes there is something special in the timing, she told People.

"As you know Taylor Swift’s favorite number is 13. Ally died on 11/13/23 at 13:40. The 13th day during the 13th hour.”
