'Rare opportunity' to travel on high speed train no longer known for carrying passengers

The Severn Valley Railway has confirmed a classic High Speed Train (HST) will be appear at its forthcoming Spring Diesel Festival.

Watch more of our videos on Shots! and live on Freeview channel 276

The event will bring a range of modern and heritage locomotives to the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) for four days of diesel traction from Thursday, May 16 to Sunday, May 19.

Now, organisers have announced that railfreight firm Colas has agreed to the use of an HST set for the festival in what is described as a "pretty much unheard of" opportunity for railway enthusiasts.

While the train used to power express trains, almost all have been withdrawn from frontline passenger services.

The set will comprise of two power cars, 43301 and 43303, and three coaches, and it will be used for local services during the four-day event.

gp star travel fest

The SVR has confirmed that a further pair of Class 20s, owned by Michael Owen, will now appear at the event, to complement the already-announced pair and single locomotive from the same class. The locomotives concerned are 20205, 20007, 20048, 20189 and 20142.

“Right now, we’re in a period when enthusiast interest in these vehicles is at an all-time high,” said Jonathan ‘Gus’ Dunster, the SVR’s managing director.

“It’s fair to say that the Colas set has particular rarity value for diesel enthusiasts, as it’s generally used for test train duties on the main line and it’s pretty much unheard of for it to carry passengers. It’s a real privilege to have this at our event and we’re very grateful to Colas for agreeing to its appearance.

“We’re delighted too that Michael Owen has agreed to a further pair of Class 20s appearing at the Spring Diesel Festival, bringing the total of this class to five across the event. We’ll have two pairs of Class 20s hauling full-line services and one single locomotive rostered on local services.”

The Colas Class 70 that was due to appear at the event can no longer attend, but the organisers hope another member of the Colas fleet will be made available.

Also appearing at the event will be two Rail Adventure Class 43 power cars, 43468 and 43480, a Freightliner Class 70, a fleet member from Colas, 73119 ‘Paul Taylor’ and 69009 ‘Western Consort’ from GB Railfreight, a Freightliner Class 59, 37409 ‘Loch Awe’ and Class 46 D182, and as well as members of the SVR’s home fleet.

Sports | miami grand prix delivers on star power and race drama, and, shockingly, not in that order, in non-race news, dolphins confirm team is not for sale.

In a F1 shocker, Lando Norris, the 24-year-old British-Belgian driver for McLaren, won Miami Grand Prix 2024 at the International Miami Autodrome (Hard Rock Stadium) for his first-ever title.

“What a race,” Norris said. “Finally, I managed to do it; I did for my whole team.”

And in showing there’s something for everyone at this Miami event, there was even some pre-race news for Miami Dolphins fans.

It was presumed that Max Verstappen, t he Belgian-Dutch driver who is the dominant F1 driver, would win in his third consecutive Miami Grand Prix on Sunday.

Verstappen, the 26-year-old three-time defending world champion, won 19 of 21 races last year, and had won four of this year’s five races.

Ferarri’s Carlos Sainz was the only other driver to win a race this year, winning in Australia.

But Verstappen, who won the pole position for the Miami Grand Prix, lost his lead due to a crash between Logan Sageant and Kevin Magnussen and never recovered.

With 10 laps to go, Norris had a 10-second lead on Verstappen, the second-place finisher who found himself holding off a hard-charging third-place Charles LeClerc.

Norris won by 7.6 seconds.

“You win, you lose,” Verstappen said. “I think we’re all used to that in racing.”

Sargeant, the 23-year-old Fort Lauderdale native and the only American F1 driver, collided with Magnussen on Lap 28 and was out of his hometown race, in which he finished last a year ago.

Sargeant was the only driver who didn’t finish the race.

Magnussen was judged to be at fault in the collision.

But that doesn’t help Sargeant, in his second year as a F1 driver, is rumored to be in jeopardy of losing his spot on the Williams Racing team.

It made for a tough weekend for Sargeant.

But the winners this weekend — aside from Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross and Dolphins CEO and president Tom Garfinkel, the hosts of Grand Prix Miami, and FIA, the governing body of Formula One – might have been South Florida residents, who, according to reports, could have nearly $1 billion pumped into its economy.

Grand Prix Miami, with all of its high-profile celebrities and the publicity that goes along with their appearances, is almost a two-day commercial for South Florida.

There was a diverse group of Who’s Whos.

Former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump was in attendance.

So was musician/entertainer will.i.am. And movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

International soccer star Zinedine Zidane was there. So was reality TV star and media personality Kendall Jenner.

New Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. took a photo with driver Lewis Hamilton right after Marc Anthony sang the national anthem.

For hardcore, homegrown South Florida sports fans, perhaps no sports star at Grand Prix Miami was bigger than ex-Miami Heat star Udonis Haslem.

Speaking of local sports, Garfinkel, president and CEO of the Dolphins, and managing partner for Grand Prix Miami, reiterated Sunday the team isn’t for sale.

There’s been chatter that Ross wants to sell a piece of the Dolphins so he can use the money to finance other business ventures.

A USA Today report last week said Ross was approached about controlling interest in the Dolphins, Hard Rock Stadium and the F1 race for $10 billion.

Garfinkel said he “can’t talk about discussions that took place on that topic.”

But he said controlling interest in the Dolphins isn’t for sale.

“What I can say is that I know, unequivocally, that the team is not for sale, the control piece of the team,” he said.

“I think the price could be much higher than $10 million, the team wouldn’t sell. So the team’s not for sale, the control, the team’s not for sale.”

Garfinkel said Ross still plans on handing the team to his daughters, Jennifer and Kimberly.

As for the race weekend, Grand Prix Miami was a sellout even though there were midweek concerns.

“We’ll be over 275,000 for the three days,” said Garfinkel, whose racing background includes time with Chip Ganassi Racing.

There are still wrinkles that must be ironed out every year.

After the inaugural Miami Grand Prix in 2022, it was the track, which was considered inferior.

After fixing issues such as smoothing out the corner between turns 15 and 16, the track seems to be up to F1 standards.

One of next year’s issues to be improved upon is opening the gates sooner on Saturday. There was a logjam of fans for the Sprint Race.

“We should have opened the gates earlier with the Sprint Race starting at noon,” Garfinkel said.

Regardless, business owners were happy.

Troy Tingling, a classically trained chef and Jamaican American owner of Soulfly Chicken, which is located in Miami’s Wynwood area, is making his third Miami Grand Prix appearance. It’s opened doors that he’s kicked in.

Through the Miami Grand Prix, Tingling, a former private chef for ex-NBA and Miami Heat player Amar’e Stoudemire, got to work events at Hard Rock Stadium. He said Dolphins players ask for him.

More importantly, word of his food is spreading.

“Formula One has been a blessing for me,” Tingling said. “This year it’s been great because now people know us and they’re coming to us. They’re saying they see us all over social media. They never had it. They come to try it, they love it. So it helps. It just makes me know that business is growing organically,”

Fans were happy, too.

Andrew Hardwick came over from England to attend the Miami Grand Prix. It’s his second F1 race. He attended the Italian Grand Prix last year.

He said it was more traditional, more classic.

“We thought we’d go a bit more crazy and do Miami,” he said.

Hardwick said it was a “sporting spectacle,” and he meant it in a good way.

“You could come and enjoy the experience even if you didn’t like sport,” he said.

Garfinkel likes to hear that.

It fits his criteria for a successful Miami Grand Prix.

“What we’re trying to do is bring people together to experience life and have great moments and bring the greatest talent in the world here to Hard Rock Stadium into this campus, and whether that’s (tennis stars) Roger Federer and Serena Williams, whether that’s (soccer stars) Messi and Neymar, whether that’s (entertainers) Jay Z and Beyonce’ and Taylor Swift, or whether that’s the Super Bowls, college football championships, the World Cup, Formula One’s no exception,” he said.

“So if we can bring that kind of talent here, if we have a great race today, we’re sold out, and everybody has a great time, I would say that’s success.”

What to expect when visiting Disneyland in May

Ways to save money at disneyland, beware of crowds.

For a brief period this month, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, is bringing together a trifecta of entertainment across both of its theme parks.

Disneyland regularly hosts special festivals at the park for Halloween and other holidays, but this is one of the rare times of the year when visitors can experience two festivals at once.

This year’s Pixar Fest and Seasons of the Force feature two beloved franchises — Pixar and Star Wars — through over-the-top food and meet-and-greets with characters never seen before in the parks. Unique entertainment options include a fireworks show that depending on where you view it is either Pixar- or Star Wars-themed with two separate soundtracks.

And that’s not all. One of Disney’s most iconic nighttime shows, “Fantasmic!,” returns in May.

Plus, there’s a ticket offer for Southern California residents that could make experiencing this somewhat affordable — at least by Disney standards.

Video preview image

Pixar Fest kicks off

From now through Aug. 4, Disneyland Resort is sporting a new makeover for Pixar Fest, a festival devoted to films made by the company’s computer-animation subsidiary, Pixar Animation Studios. NerdWallet got an inside look during a press event for the festival's kickoff.

As part of Pixar Fest, there’s an abundance of Pixar-themed entertainment, including a dance party and a new daytime parade. Character meet-and-greets will include Pixar characters such as Wade and Ember from “Elemental" for the first time at the Disneyland Resort.

You’ll also see decorations throughout both theme parks, including a 25-foot tall sculpture of the iconic Pixar Ball outside Disneyland’s main gate.

One of the big draws of Disney festivals is the food. For example, you might see Mr. Potato Head-inspired churros, which top the iconic snack with, yes, potato chips.

On May 10, a series of marketplace stands will open at Disney California Adventure Park with even more limited-time food offerings based on some of Pixar’s newer films, including Hanger Management inspired by “Inside Out.”

Then, there are the fireworks. Tinker Bell is the usual star of Disney fireworks shows, but during Pixar Fest, Buzz takes the torch and flies across the sky between Matterhorn Bobsleds and Sleeping Beauty Castle. Later, Carl and Ellie’s house featured in “Up” floats above the castle.

Season of the Force continues

For fans who prefer Chewbacca over Sulley as their hairy creature of choice, May also features a Star Wars-themed festival called Season of the Force. Season of the Force runs through June 2, providing about a month where both festivals overlap.

“The two festivals aren’t actually intended to interact with each other,” says Tracy Halas, creative director at Disney Live Entertainment. “It’s really just an opportunity to share everything and have something for everybody at the parks.”

And there are plenty of Star Wars fans, indeed. After all, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still holds the title of highest-grossing film of all time in the domestic market, according to Box Office Mojo.

Among the festival's star attractions is a temporary retheming of the Space Mountain ride to Hyperspace Mountain, where the soundtrack now includes the films’ iconic theme song. There’s also Star Wars-themed food, including a bantha burger based on the furry, horned mammals that roam the fictional planet of Tatooine.

While those Disneyland special events spotlight two of Disney’s biggest franchises, that’s still not the only reason why May could be the best month for Disneyland fans.

Fantasmic! returns

“Fantasmic!”, a nighttime show at Disneyland involving costumed characters, stunts and pyrotechnics, went dark after a massive, fire-breathing dragon prop fell victim to its own flames during a live performance in April 2023. That performance was cut short, marking the last show for more than a year. That changes on May 24, when the show returns.

Southern California resident tickets

Disney uses variable pricing on its theme park tickets , where higher-demand days command higher prices. Disneyland prices its one-day admission tickets across seven tiers, ranging from Tier 0 (least expensive) to Tier 6 (most expensive).

The average single-day ticket price in May is $162, about 7.4% cheaper than July’s average of $175, according to a NerdWallet analysis of Disney ticket prices.

For locals, a limited-time ticket option offers even lower prices. Southern California residents can purchase a three-day ticket package that costs $225 for weekday tickets ($75 per day) or $275 ($92 per day) for the version that offers weekend access, too.

The last day to use tickets sold through that promotion is June 2.

Hotel discounts

Then, there's another offer available to anyone — not just local residents — that could make trips more affordable. Hotel stays on Sunday through Thursday nights are as much as 15% off for trips booked via Disney's website through June 3 and completed by June 7.

Hotel prices can be the biggest cost in a Disneyland trip — more so than other expenses like food and theme park tickets. The weeknight hotel deal could make them more affordable. Plus, weekday theme park tickets tend to be cheaper than weekends, adding to the savings.

But for all the goodness set for May, you might have to contend with crowds. The ticket prices of Fantasmic!'s reopening weekend falls into the highest pricing tier, suggesting Disney is bracing for big crowds on that weekend.

High school students also descend upon Disney California Adventure on certain nights in May and June for Grad Nite. There may be bigger daytime crowds if students arrive early, and the park will close earlier than usual. This year’s Grad Nites are set for May 10, 14, 15, 17, 19, 22, 23, 28 and 31, as well as June 2, 5, 7, 9, 12 and 14.

Plus, with Southern California resident tickets expiring on June 2 and the summer blackout dates starting May 31 for certain annual pass holders, many people might squeeze in a visit in May.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Janet Jackson will make her fourth appearance at the 2024 Essence Festival of Culture this summer in New Orleans.

Jackson was originally scheduled to headline the Smoothie King Center on July 23 as part of her Together Again Summer 2024 tour, but her plans have changed. The appearance was canceled and now she’s a scheduled headliner for one of the three nights of concerts as part of the annual festival, which this year runs from July 5 through July 7 in the Superdome, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported.

Essence has not said on which date Jackson will perform.

Jackson previously performed at the event in 2010, 2018 and 2022. The last show sold out all 48,500 seats and was reportedly the highest grossing night in the festival’s 30-year history.

Last week, Essence revealed that a reunion of the Cash Money Millionaires collective of rappers affiliated with the New Orleans label would take place during the festival. However, no artists have been specified beyond Cash Money co-founder Bryan “Baby” Williams, aka Birdman.

Festival producers have been rolling out the roster for the event piecemeal. Some Essence fans have taken to social media to express frustration with the late start and unusual one-at-a-time reveal, the newspaper reported.

In addition to the nightly concerts inside the Superdome, the festival will include programming on networking, finance, careers, wellness, fashion, beauty and more at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and other venues citywide.

Launched in 1995 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine, the festival has evolved into the world’s largest celebration of Black women, culture and communities, convening more than 530,000 people annually over the July Fourth weekend in New Orleans, Essence Communications Inc. has said.

Great Moscow State Circus

3 reviews of Great Moscow State Circus

Russian circus.

This building houses the world's largest fixed circus which has an outstanding reputation. I couldn't personally attend the show "Around the World", which is the most famous, but was able to see the new year's show and it was amazing.Part of the purest Russian tradition, the circus really can't disappoint. However, unlike the Circus Nikutin which smaller, modest and not as well-known, but in a better condition this circus shows signs of wear. When I was there, in midwinter, the water was dripping from the ceiling. However, the show is really succesful, and I had to buy tickets in November for January 1st, and Regular show tickets were not available before February.

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
