“He’s been called an old soul as much as his given name. His talent has been described with such phrases as “once in a lifetime” and “lightning in a bottle.” Jake Kohn appears to be your average 16-year-old boy, but when his voice fills the room, it becomes clear why these descriptors have become second nature to fans and music journalists alike.
It’s not surprising fans draw comparisons to artists like Joe Cocker and Janis Joplin when they hear that rich, raspy baritone, but perhaps the more inexplicable characteristic of Jake’s music is his songwriting. If you didn’t know better, you would swear Jake has experienced all the trials and tribulations of a full life. His songwriting may not be autobiographical, but it paints an accurate picture of the struggles and hardships many Americans face, particularly those in Appalachia.
Born in Winchester, Virginia, home of Patsy Cline, Jake is no stranger to country music. While Jake doesn’t come from a musical background, he grew up listening to legends like Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash with his father, Erick. At 11-years-old, Jake was gifted a guitar from his great grandmother. He taught himself to play chords from a poster on his wall. His mentor, Buddy Dunlap, would allow Jake to come and play at his barn, teaching him some tricks of the trade along the way. It was this same year, Jake discovered one of his biggest songwriting influences, Justin Townes Earle. Jake continues to draw inspiration from his music and guitar style.
Jake will tell you he penned his first “good” song at 12-years-old. With the support of his mother, Maria, he began playing live shows locally, often at places he otherwise isn’t old enough to get into. Jake began receiving encouragement from local artists such as Logan Moore from Low Water Bridge Band. Though he hasn’t released music on streaming platforms, you can find Jake’s music on YouTube. It was there his manager, Ashley Wells, found a performance of that first “good” song he ever wrote, “Fraterville, TN.” With her help, Jake began traveling outside of Virginia for shows. Earlier this year, Jake’s video for “Frostbite” went viral. He has been on an upward trajectory since. At 15, he had already developed a following and was being approached by industry professionals.”

From Stephens City, Virginia, Jake Kohn is a singer/songwriter on a clear path to stardom. At only 16 years old, Jake's unusually deep voice and songwriting ability have garnered the attention of some of his favorite artists. He was tapped to open a 2-night residency at The Caverns for The Steeldrivers in Pelham, TN, in December. He recently supported Red Clay Strays on a 3-night run in the Southeast. Drayton Farley requested Jake as support for his Virginia show. Festivals dominate the rest of his year, recently playing Laurel Cove with artists like Cole Chaney, 49 Winchester, Adeem the Artist, and S.G. Goodman. This Fall, you can find him at Americanafest, the biggest alternative country music festival in Nashville, TN.
It is not lost on Jake that he is playing shows beyond his years. In fact, he is still awestruck when people recognize him. In February, he was invited to play W.B. Walker's Old Soul Radio Show, perhaps a rite of passage for some of the greatest touring acts today, such as Tyler Childers and Colter Wall. Whether it is signing a poster for a fan or being invited to see Tommy Prine's release show, Jake is consistently surprised and grateful to be at this point in his 3-year career.
Jake picked up a guitar, gifted from his great-grandmother, at 11 years old, and taught himself to play chords from a poster on his wall. His mentor, Buddy Dunlap, would let Jake come play at his barn, teaching Jake some tricks of the trade along the way. He grew up listening to music his dad, Erick, enjoyed, like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. His family has no musical background, but Jake has been singing along since they can remember. It was Youtuber, Grady Smith, who introduced him to the world of alternative country. Jake credits Justin Townes Earle with being his favorite songwriter of all time. He continues to draw inspiration from his music and guitar style. Like Justin Townes Earle, Jake can also be found playing so hard he pops strings during his set.
Jake will tell you he penned his first "good" song at 12-years-old. The song, "Fraterville, TN," tells the story of the Fraterville Coal mining disaster of 1902. If you are fortunate enough to get this song in your set, Jake will always tell the story that devastated the town. While his own life experience hasn't influenced the majority of his songs, Jake tells stories of real American people. His songs speak to the experience of many in Appalachia, and you will find yourself wondering how an artist so young can capture the emotion that comes with living a full, often burdensome, and complex life.
The local music scene in his home of Winchester, Virginia is no stranger to talent. Jake had the support of Logan Moore from Low Water Bridge Band early on. He began playing local bars at age 13, uploading new music via YouTube in his time away from school and gigs. Jake caught the attention of his now manager, Ashley Wells, with a cover of a Jason Isbell tune, posted in a Facebook group. She would later bring Jake to Kentucky to play Master Musicians Festival with artists such as John R. Miller and Marty Stuart. It was his video for "Hard as Stone," filmed for Radio West Virginia, that fueled Jake's widespread notoriety. His video for "Frostbite," a gut-wrenching and jaw-dropping showcase of his songwriting and vocal ability, continues to make its way across all platforms bolstering millions of views. His career has been on an upward trajectory since, leading Jake to hit the road, alongside his supportive mom, Maria. Jake will spend his summer touring and recording, before heading back to begin his junior year of high school.

16-Year-Old Jake Kohn Releases Debut Single, “Frostbite”
Jake Kohn is a name you’re going to want to remember over the next few years.
Listening to his music, he sounds like the next Colter Wall, with unprecedentedly deep and raspy vocals that mysteriously sound like they could only be the product of someone who’s endured years of emotional wear and tear. The emotion and experience in Kohn’s voice is palpable, and you can feel it in your bones with each verse he sings. But when you put a face to the voice, and see a relatively baby-faced kid belting those wise-beyond-his-years lyrics, it just adds to the insanity that is Jake Kohn.
At only sixteen years old, his unique vocals are turning heads, and he’s got more than enough songwriting ability to back it up.
Kohn, who recently signed with Atlantic Records, has blown up on YouTube this year as a semi-viral sensation, with a video of him singing a stripped-back, acoustic version of his song “Frostbite” in the woods this past March amassing well over a million views to date. Posted to the RadioWV account, which has a real knack for unearthing some of Appalachia’s best kept secrets such as Cole Chaney, Logan Halstead, Nolan Taylor, and most famously, Oliver Anthony, Kohn is already in impressive company.
And now, eight months after it was posted to YouTube, Kohn has finally released “Frostbite” to streaming platforms everywhere as his debut single. The first of what I can only expect will be many to come from one of Appalachia’s youngest artists and next big things, “Frostbite” is a well-written tune with descriptive lyricism that paints an ominously vivid image of an emotionless life on the move.
Heavy stuff coming from someone who couldn’t even get their driver’s license when he wrote it.
“Frostbite”
“Frostbite (From The Field)”
A native of Winchester, Virginia, Kohn is steeped in the classic country of yesteryear, and has also found influence in some of the modern songwriting legends like the late Justin Townes Earle. Despite his young age, he has already been writing original music for several years, much of which deals with the experiences of those around him growing up in Western Virginia.
And with one of the more unique voices in the industry, which adds an element to his music that transcends age, Kohn makes you feel as if his music is completely autobiographical. Whatever you do, though, appreciate his vocals, but don’t get too caught up in them.
Because the most impressive thing about Kohn’s music is the lyricism, and that’s what this whole songwriting thing is about at the end of the day.
Jake Kohn Tour Dates
And while he is not undertaking a full time touring schedule at the moment given his age and the nascency of his career, there are still a handful of shows at which you can hear these songs live. If Kohn is coming to a city near you, then I highly recommend you check him out, because it’ll be pretty cool to say you saw him killing it in the smaller venues as a teenager before he blows up.
Fresh off of his Grand Ole Opry debut earlier this fall, here is where you can catch Jake Kohn before the year comes to a close, and a few bonus shows already announced for 2024.

Born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Zac Townsend has blended himself with every ingredient in the melting pot of genres and artists in the Shenandoah Valley and beyond since he began playing shows at age 14.
With earlier roots playing in rock and metal bands, there's an undeniable rasp to his voice and aggression in his delivery, reminiscent of Alice in Chains and his personal home state favorites, Lamb of God. Townsend has found a way to blend that intensity into the smoother Americana and Country Blues sound that is at the forefront of his songs, giving listeners and those in the crowd a little taste of everything.

Luke Combs Proves That, Yes, He Can Sing Inside a Tornado, Thank You, in New Video
By Kory Grow
It is possible to be “scared of nothin’ and … scared to death” at the same, at least so says Luke Combs , who holds his own bellowing about the virtues of the Sooner State over a torrent of wind and rain in the video for his new song, “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma.” The song comes off the upcoming soundtrack to Twisters , the 28-years-late sequel to Twister (and grammarians will note that Combs’ double-negative suggests there is love in Oklahoma, even if it’s a North Carolinian turned Nashvillian singing his heart out.)
“Ain’t no love in Oklahoma, just the whistle of a long black train,” Combs sings. You’ll know when it’s comin’ for ya, ridin’ in on the wind and rain.” The video makes it seem as if Combs is the only thing riding in on wind and rain — his breakout country hit was titled “Hurricane” after all. NASCAR driver John Hunter Nemechek makes a special appearance in the clip, too. Combs posted a series of behind-the-scenes pics to his Instagram .
