Jordan - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Holidays to Jordan will be incomplete without a visit to Petra

Located at the crossroads of Asia , Africa , and Europe , Jordan is a representation of all of the intersections that occur in that crossroads. Once home to Romans and Ottomans, holidays to Jordan will bring you its rich history and culture filled with color, heart, and vibrancy. Bordered by Iraq, Iran , Saudi Arabia, and Israel , a trip to Jordan has something for all travel bugs.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, and go back in time to when things were a little simpler; if that’s not enough, it’s a modern Wonder of the World.
  • Experience the viciously natural cycle of Wadi Rum, a desert that is a day away from Aqaba and Petra.
  • Swim with the fishes in the Red Sea.
  • See wildlife and scenery that is ancient while remaining timeless at the Dana Biosphere Reserve.
  • Live in the dichotomy of the city of Amman ; urbane and modern in the West, and earthy and ancient in the East.

Travel Tips

  • Other than covering yourself appropriately — men with legs covered and women with arms, legs, and hair covered —there aren’t many customs that you need to worry about.
  • It is a very safe place to be; none of the revolts or riots have spilled over from its neighbors. However, being a tourist, one needs to follow the usual safety precautions.
  • Bring good walking shoes and breathable clothing; it’s hot and you’re going to be doing a lot of walking.
  • Water is safe to drink, although it is heavily chlorinated so it might taste bad; just to be safe, stick with bottled water and pasteurized milk.
  • Be aware of your sun limits; the sun is brutal and you could get badly sunburnt, or worse, pass out from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
  • If you need it, healthcare in Jordan is generally good, and there are hospitals in big cities and clinics in smaller villages.

Jordan has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Jordan before planning your tour. If you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Jordan, do check out our Jordan Travel Guide for more information.

On a wet hike, visit the ruins of Mukawir and explore the Wadi Mujib canyon. Visit Lot's Cave Monastery and Sodom and Gomorrah on the way to the Lisan Peninsula. And do not forget to take a dip in the Hammamat Ma'in Thermal Springs and sit on a ridge to admire the expansive Dead Sea panorama.

Jordan Tours

group of travellers outside the gates of petra in jordan

Land of eternal mystery

Visiting Jordan is the kind of trip you plan around the sights and return talking about the people. There's no shortage of sights: even in a region full of must-sees, Petra – an entire city carved from reddish sandstone cliffs – is one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites in the world. Jordan's desert landscape and strangely familiar names evoke romantic images in the West; here, you can literally walk in the footsteps of Jesus or Lawrence of Arabia (or Indiana Jones, if you prefer). But whatever you tastes, be they the world-class diving in the Red Sea or the healing mud treatments of Dead Sea spas, Jordan's most lasting impression always seems to be its warm, welcoming people.

Very happy with the tour and a special tribute to our tour guide, Mohammed who gave us a very interesting history of the places we went to. He also went out of his way to take us out to experience the local culture in Downtown Amman on our last night. On the downside is we were not told of the exact time to meet on the first day of arrival at the hotel which made us nervous about missing out on the briefing. It will be helpful to place a note on the wall in advance

Perseids Meteor Shower - 8 days Tour

Perseids Meteor Shower - 8 days

Jordan had been on my bucket list for a while, so I decided what better time to go than for the Perseids Meteor Shower! The welcome transfer at the airport was great as the rep helped us through the visa process, which really helped make the whole arrival stress-free. The tour certainly was 'on the go', with lots of sights and cultural experiences packed into the 8 day trip. The highlights for me were definitely seeing the Treasury in Petra (and a walk up the Monastery is worth the climb!), star gazing in Dana Nature Reserve (unfortunately the road leading to Wadi Rum was closed while we were there), canyoning in Wadi Mujib and floating in the Dead Sea. All the hotels were clean, conveniently-located and had nice restaurants. The transportation was mostly modern air-conditioned vehicles, though on the drive to Dana we did have some older bumpy vehicles, but it was all part of the adventure. As a solo female traveller I felt completely safe and well-looked after the whole trip. I'll definitely be going on another On The Go tour soon!

Caitlin Clark's Latest Basketball Achievement Hasn't Been Done Since Michael Jordan

Caitlin clark has signed a multiyear dear with wilson, the first female player to do so, and the first player to sign such a deal since michael jordan's debut season in 1984..

Caitlin Clark  continues to make history.

The Indiana Fever guard has signed a multiyear deal with Wilson to release a line of signature basketballs, making her the first female athlete to sign such a deal, according to a May 21 press release . That's not all: No player in NBA or WNBA history has received a deal like this since  Michael Jordan  signed one with Wilson back in 1984 during his debut season. And obviously, Caitlin is thrilled.

"Wilson has been with me across some of the most pivotal moments in my career so far," she said in a statement, "and I couldn't be more excited to continue driving basketball forward alongside them."

She added, "It feels surreal to have my own basketball collection, and to affect what that means for future generations of athletes."

With her new deal, Caitlin will partner with Wilson on releasing three limited-edition basketball designs to commemorate her first season, each inspired by Caitlin's incredible sports journey. The gold and white basketballs will be available for purchase starting May 28—although fans  do have to enter a contest  for their chance to purchase.

And despite  a bumpy start to her first WNBA season —the Indiana Fever have yet to win a game this year—the 22-year-old  continues to dominate , leading her team in points scored across their past four games with an average of 17 points per game, including making 100% of her free throws.

And it's no wonder, as Caitlin was the  No. 1 overall pick for the WNBA  and made history as NCAA Division I basketball's overall top scorer (for men and women) in March. And to hear the University of Iowa alum tell it, she could not be happier to be part of the Indiana Fever.

"This is a dream come true,"  she said in her first press conference  with the team last month. "I can't think of a better place for myself to start my career, a place that loves basketball, supports women's basketball and an organization that really does things the right way and has a championship pedigree."

Horses for Courses: Colonial pedigree puts spotlight on Jordan Spieth in Texas

The 78 th edition of the Charles Schwab Challenge reinforces Colonial Country Club as the longest-serving host venue on the PGA TOUR. Designed by John Bredemus and Perry Maxwell, Colonial opened in 1936 and hosted the U.S. Open in 1941. The PGA TOUR arrived for the 1946 season and has returned annually since.

After the 2023 event, Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner worked their magic in restoring the proud club to the glory days of the early years. Now playing 80 yards longer and tipping out at 7,289 yards, every facet of the par-70 layout was modified.

Emiliano Grillo, winner last year in a playoff over Adam Schenk, leads the invitational field of 132 players to Fort Worth.

Players listed are in the field this week; 2024 season stats.

TifTuf Bermudagrass sod was laid from tee to the approaches of the 007XL Bentgrass greens and all points in between. Colonial requires moving the golf ball both ways off the tee. Ben Hogan’s famous quote reminds us that a straight ball brings nothing but trouble on this layout. The famous breezes that always blow in this part of the world will push poorly-struck tee balls and irons into the rough and tree lines. Controlling the golf ball from less-than-ideal lies to find greens only 5,000 square feet on average will help keep the momentum going. Don’t forget there are four difficult par-3 holes, all ranging 194 yards or longer on the scorecard. Eight of the last 10 winners have ranked in the top 10 gaining shots tee to green. Former champions Grillo (20 th ) and Chris Kirk (30 th ; 2015) relied on red-hot putters instead.

While not the outright tournament favorite, Jordan Spieth (+2200) , the third choice at the BetMGM Sportsbook, is the horse for the course this week. Making his 12 th visit across town from his Dallas home, the 2016 champion also has finished second on three occasions and has racked up nine paydays of T14 or better. Last year provided the only blemish from his previous 11 starts (72-72; MC) and halted his run of 10 consecutive weekends. From 42 career rounds, the native Texan has posted just seven loops above 70 and carries a stroke average of 67.95.

Putting: Birdie or Better Conversion Percentage

Colonial is notoriously stingy for allowing birdies and eagles to pile up on the scorecards. The par-70 track has ranked in the top eight of the most difficult courses to convert birdie chances over the last three seasons. The two par-5 holes play 585 yards and 639 yards and do not score well annually. The quartet of par-3 holes also ranked inside the top 10 the last two seasons. The brand-new 007XL Bentgrass putting surfaces, running between 12 and 13 feet on the Stimpmeter, will add an extra challenge this week. Over the last decade, only one winner finished outside the top 11 in converting birdie chances.

Scottie Scheffler (+275) positioned as the clear betting favorite this week (or any week) is hardly surprising since he sits at the top of the pile in most of the important categories on TOUR. Defeated in a playoff by his friend Sam Burns in 2022, the Dallas resident returned last year, closed with 67, and missed the extra holes by a shot. Over the last two events in Fort Worth, only three players have beaten him.

Bogey Avoidance

Last year, the winning score was 8-under 272, the highest winning total this century. The 2022 edition required 9-under 271, the joint second-highest winning total. There will be bogeys, especially with the new changes for 2024. Holes have been shifted, lengthened and tilted, greens were resurfaced and trees removed. Navigation and shot-making trumps brute strength. Players trying to overpower the course will learn this lesson more quickly than others.

A new baseline will begin with this year’s edition, but history tells us the last three winners have squared eight or more bogeys for 72 holes. Putting squares on the card is survivable when birdies are on offer. That’s not the case this week, or most, at Colonial.

The only time Grillo (+12500) did not play the final 36 holes in eight visits to Fort Worth was the June 2020 edition. The winner in a playoff last year over Schenk, the Argentine survived a double-bogey six on No. 18 but found redemption on the second extra hole. Cashing solo third in 2018 and T8 in 2021, he has five top-25 paydays from seven weekends.

Oddsmaker’s extras

  • Chris Kirk (+6000): The 2015 winner missed the cut for the first-time last year. With seven top-25 paydays from 12 weekends, including T15 in 2022, there’s a reason he has played every event since 2011.
  • Justin Rose (+6000): Posting 20-under 260 in 2018, the Englishman missed tying Zach Johnson’s tournament scoring record by a shot. After T58 in defense in 2019, he’s painted the top 20 in three of the last four seasons, including T3 in 2020.
  • Daniel Berger (+6600): The 2020 champion defeated Collin Morikawa (+1400) in a playoff to win on his third visit. Cashing T20 in defense and T23 in 2022, the man from Florida has played four consecutive weekends when entered.
  • Harris English (+3300): Only Sergio Garcia (not entered) has won this event on debut. The former Georgia Bulldog signed for T5 on his first visit in 2012 and has cashed T30 or better in six weekends from eight attempts.
  • Tony Finau (+2800): Joining Kirk and Spieth, the big hitter snapped a run of seven straight weekends at Colonial last year. The runner-up in 2019 ran T4 in 2022 and has never cashed outside T34.
  • Brendon Todd (+10000): Making his ninth start here, the fairway finder has produced three T8 or better paydays in the last decade.
  • Zach Johnson (+20000): Making his 19 th start, the only two-time winner in the field set the tournament scoring record in 2010. From 2010 thru 2013, he never finished worse than solo fourth and won his second title in 2012.

Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth React to Jimmy Dunne’s Resignation From PGA Tour Policy Board

Bob harig | may 14, 2024.

Woods at his Tuesday press conference at Valhalla.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jordan Spieth pushed back on the idea that the player directors on the PGA Tour Policy Board now have too much power as the leaders try to shape what the new PGA Tour Enterprises will look like and how it might be impacted by investment from the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

Jimmy Dunne, prominent in the golf world and an independent director on the policy board, resigned on Monday in frustration over a lack of progress on a deal . Dunne had been one of the select few who secretly negotiated with the PIF and put in place the “framework agreement’’ that was announced nearly a year ago.

In his resignation letter, Dunne said that his role was now “superfluous” and that “players now outnumber the independent directors on the board.”

In the aftermath of last year’s secret agreement, players pushed back against PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and the lack of information surrounding the agreement. Tiger Woods was added to the board, meaning six player directors, including Spieth, Adam Scott, Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson.

“That’s a false narrative that the players are determining all these things,” said Spieth during a news conference at Valhalla, site of the PGA Championship. “That’s not even what Jimmy was saying. Jimmy was saying more of the balance of things, and I think that balance is being restored on C-6 (referring to PGA Tour Inc., the non-profit 501c-6) to kind of maybe a place where it probably should be on the C-6.

“And now that things have split up, they’re two very different boards. But I hope and feel like everyone’s trying to row the boat the same direction and get it to where they’re both in a very sound place and that stuff like what’s been happening just doesn’t keep happening.”

Dunne, along with chairman Ed Herlihy was on the policy board of PGA Tour Inc.—not PGA Tour Enterprises—and that board was expanded to 14 members, six of whom are independent.

The PGA Tour Enterprises board has 13 members that includes the six player directors and former player Joe Ogilvie, who serves as a liaison. Four members of the Strategic Sports Group, which has entered into a private equity deal with the PGA Tour Enterprises, are also part of that board.

Dunne, who is a member of several prominent clubs including Augusta National, Seminole and Cypress Point, heads a firm in New York that lost numerous employees during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. His benevolence to those families has been well-chronicled and he was said to be vehemently against any deal with Saudi Arabia due to its alleged ties to 9/11.

But it was Dunne who first reached out to Yasir Al-Rumayyan last year, setting in motion the plan to end the lawsuits between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour as well as setting up a plan to bring the game back together in some form. Al-Rumayyan is the governor of the PIF, which backs LIV Golf.

Under terms of that original agreement, Al-Rumayyan was to become the chairman of the board of the new PGA Tour Enterprises. But with no deal, that has not occurred and the Tour subsequently made its deal with SSG.

“I think Jimmy Dunne not being involved when he was involved is a loss,” Spieth said. “I've spoken with him just he and I quite a few times over the last few months and had really good conversations, and when he explains kind of how everything went about since he came on the board, it makes a lot of sense to me. So I was a bit surprised, for sure.”

Last week, Rory McIlroy said he would not be rejoining the board due to opposition from some of the existing board members, believed to be player directors. He admitted to having differences of opinion on the future of golf with Woods, for example.

But Adam Scott in an interview Sunday also pushed back on any kind of board disagreement and Woods acknowledged that his views and McIlroy’s are not necessarily the same.

“It's good to see it differently, but collectively as a whole we want to see whatever's best for all the players, the fans, and the state of golf,” Woods said at his press conference here Tuesday. “How we get there, that's to be determined, but the fact that we're in this together and in this fight together to make golf better is what it's all about.”

Asked if he was personally open to a deal with the PIF, Woods said: “I’m personally involved in the process.”

As for Dunne’s resignation, Woods said: “Jimmy and the amount of work and dedication that he put into the board and to the PGA Tour, it's been incredible. It was a bit surprising that he resigned yesterday and just how it all came about, but, no, his role and his help, then what he's been able to do for the PGA Tour has been great.”

Inaugural Jordan Awards showcase excellence in veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences

Student award winners at the inaugural Winfred A. Jordan Awards.

Faculty, staff, and students in the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine were recognized earlier this month at the Dr. Winfred A. Jordan Awards for their contributions to the fields of veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences.

The inaugural event, organized by the college’s director of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Maurice Cottman, was inspired as part of the college’s 125th anniversary and is named after the college’s first Black graduate, who graduated in 1920 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Cottman said the awards recognize the hurdles those in underserved communities face in veterinary medicine, but also provide a space to recognize students for their academic prowess.

“Dr. Jordan did something that is special. He graduated from our college in the 1920s, more than 40 years before he could even legally vote in the United States. His story deserves to be told to remember our Cougs of the past while also using his triumph as a guiding light for the Cougs of the future,” said Cottman. “Our college is in our 125 th  year of existing — that isn’t just a number to me. The people who were the foundation for our current success are important and an event like what we created helps to prove this.”

Maurice Cottman talking with a veterinary student.

The night’s honors included the Stewardship and Servant Leadership award, the Legacy of Equity award, the Student Organization of the Year award, and distinguished awards for faculty, staff, and students, as well as the college’s Top Seniors, adopted from the university’s Top Ten Seniors model.

Associate Professor Dr. John Wenz was recognized with the Stewardship and Servant Leadership award. The award honors a college affiliate whose stewardship and servant leadership efforts have measurably and significantly improved the lives of animals through engagement with industry or other elements of institutional advancement.

Retired longtime college photographer Henry Moore Jr. was recognized with the Legacy of Equity award, which is presented to a college staff or faculty member who, in retirement, continues to make outstanding contributions to academia, the college, and the community.

The Veterinary Business Medical Association received the college’s first Student Organization of the Year award that recognizes a club or organization at the college for excellent service in administration, community engagement, professional development, and collaboration.

Distinguished faculty, staff, and students were also honored for advancements in diversity and equity.

Anita Peralta, manager of WSU’s Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences program, and Cassondra Yarlott, veterinary student academic coordinator, received Distinguished Staff awards.

Regina Meeks, a third-year veterinary student, and Mustika Rahmawati, a graduate student in WSU’s PhD in Molecular Biosciences program, received Distinguished Student awards.

Professors Emily Qualls-Creekmore, the late Gary Haldorson, and Anthony Nicola earned Distinguished Faculty awards.

Top seniors recognized for outstanding dedication to academic excellence and service to the college and their communities included: veterinary students Julia Bagshaw, Nadine Encarnacion, Georgiana Kostov, Liza Sperry, Janelle Thomas, and Tanya Weber, as well as graduate students Brianne Jones, Mustika Rahmawati, and Jalene Velazquez.

Scottie Scheffler arrested by police before second round

World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler was charged with assaulting a police officer outside Valhalla Golf Club hours before starting his second round at the 2024 PGA Championship.

Scheffler — who was also charged with third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic — was released by police just in time to take to the course for his tee-off time of 10:08am ET. He impressed with a five-under round of 66 that moved him into third, at nine-under for the tournament.

The Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections, who posted a mugshot of the 27-year-old, said he was booked in at 7.28am local time and released at 8.40am. Scheffler later described the incident as “a big misunderstanding”.

The start of Friday’s second round was delayed by 80 minutes because of an unrelated crash near the course . Louisville police said a shuttle bus had struck and killed a pedestrian outside the golf club. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg later named him as local man John Mills.

Xander Schauffele stepped onto the first tee Friday at Valhalla Golf Club after a historic first round at the PGA Championship. He shot a 9-under 62, giving him the 18-hole lead. It tied the men’s major scoring record, the lowest round in PGA Championship history.

Friday’s round for Schauffele didn’t smash records or set career-scoring bests. But it kept the 30-year-old atop the PGA Championship leaderboard heading into the weekend.

Schauffele shot a second-round 68, giving him the 36-hole lead. It’s the second consecutive week Schauffele led a tournament after 36 holes. Last week, Schauffele couldn’t secure the win, thanks to a dominant performance from Rory McIlroy.

The seven-time PGA Tour winner is looking for a different outcome this week, attempting to capture his first major championship.

Watch out for Bryson

This is the second time Bryson DeChambeau has started a major with back-to-back rounds in the 60s.

The other was his win at the 2020 U.S. Open.

Koepka records 8 birdies in second round

It was a roller coaster second round for Brooks Koepka.

He shot a 3-under 68, which consisted of eight birdies.

But it also included three bogeys and a double.

Koepka sits at 7-under-par, five off the lead held by Xander Schauffele.

Tiger Woods finished the 2024 PGA Championship at 7-over-par.

He shot a 6-over 77 in his second round.

But Tiger finished the PGA at Valhalla, where he won this event in 2000, with a birdie on 18.

Woods hasn't made a cut at the PGA since 2020.

Brooks Koepka had a double bogey on the par-5 10th.

He's rallied with three birdies since, including one on the par-4 15th.

Koepka has seven birdies on the day and is four off the lead at 8-under-par.

What's at stake for Robert MacIntyre

Robert MacIntyre has never previously been in the top 20 entering the third round of a major.

Where PGA champions need to be after 36 holes

31 of the last 34 winners of the PGA Championship have been in the top 10 through 36 holes.

Over the last 30 years, 91 percent of men's major winners have been in the top 10 entering the third round.

McIlroy going in the wrong direction

Rory McIlroy, who won the PGA the last time it was staged at Valhalla, is going in the wrong direction.

After being 1-under-par through 11 holes, McIlroy records a double-bogey 6 on the par-4 12th.

He is 4-under-par for the tournament, eight back of the lead.

Needs a strong finish coming in to get back in the mix.

Inside the most bizarre day in major golf with the arrest of Scottie Scheffler

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The most shocking day in golf major championship history began with a tragedy, and saw Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 male player in the world, arrested, booked into a local jail and released in time to tee off.

It was just after 5 a.m. on a rainy Friday morning that police were called to the street outside of Valhalla Golf Club. A shuttle bus traveling down Shelbyville Road struck and killed John Mills, a local man working the PGA Championship for a tournament vendor.

The fatal wreck caused traffic to be shut down in both directions outside of Valhalla, which is hosting the major championship for the first time in a decade. Scheffler arrived at the scene an hour later, amid a steady rain and flashing police lights, seeking to enter the property and begin preparation for an 8:48 a.m. tee time for Round 2 of the PGA Championship. A police and security presence outside of a major championship routine is typical, even common. “I drive by cops like that probably 10 times a year,” one PGA Tour swing coach said, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter.

What happened next was anything but common. When Scheffler, traveling eastbound, attempted to move his vehicle into the westbound lane, according to the Louisville Police Department arrest report, detective Bryan Gillis attempted to stop the vehicle. The police report said Scheffler continued forward, “dragging Detective Gillis to the ground,” and noted that he suffered injuries that required medical treatment, as well as irreparable damage to his $80 uniform pants. Jeff Darlington, an ESPN NFL reporter assigned to cover the second golf major of the year, happened to be on the scene and watched it unfold, reporting that Scheffler’s vehicle moved 10 to 20 yards before coming to a final stop.

Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, said Scheffler was originally instructed to go in and that the officer directing traffic was not part of the event traffic detail. “So that’s where the miscommunication arose and that’s why we’re here,” Romines said Friday morning.

When Scheffler did stop, he lowered his window and the officer reached in, grabbed Scheffler’s arm and pulled the door open, Darlington reported. The officer then put Scheffler in handcuffs and pushed him against the car. As Scheffler was escorted toward a police car in the rainy dark, a video filmed by Darlington showed Scheffler turning to say, “Can you help?”

“You need to get out of the way,” another officer told Darlington. “Right now, he’s going to jail, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Schauffele drops a shot, lead is 1

Xander Schauffele makes his first bogey of the week.

The last player to go the first 36 holes of a PGA Championship without a single bogey is Hale Irwin in 1993.

Schauffele falls to 12-under-par, one ahead of Collin Morikawa.

Schauffele improves to 13-under-par

Xander Schauffele is now 13-under.

The lowest 36-hole score to par in men's major championship history is 14 under by Jordan Spieth at the 2015 Masters.

Will Zalatoris: Players discussed delaying, canceling PGA Championship second round

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A small group of players discussed not playing the second round of the PGA Championship as scheduled following the death of a pedestrian outside of Valhalla Golf Club, as well as the arrest of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Will Zalatoris detailed the 20-30 minute conversation, which took place in the Valhalla locker room, to a small group of reporters after his round Friday afternoon. The group of unnamed players considered approaching the PGA of America about the cancellation or delay of Friday’s play, he said.

“Some of the guys were talking about, wondering if we should even play today,” Zalatoris said. “At one point there were a group of guys in the locker room talking about going to the PGA of America about it, but I think it was dead in the water in the locker room. It was bizarre. We just didn’t know … when Scottie was going to get out, any of the details.”

Tee times were delayed by one hour and 20 minutes on Friday after a shuttle bus struck and killed John Mills, who was working for a tournament vendor. The PGA moved the first tee times from 7:15 a.m. ET to 8:35.

During his Friday post-round news conference, Scottie Scheffler said that he was "going to go back to his normal routine." That includes having a meal, practicing in the afternoon, going to the gym before heading home and getting some rest before the weekend.

Well, the broadcast showed Scheffler practicing bunker shots and signing autographs for fans.

Scottie Scheffler climbs PGA Championship leaderboard hours after arrest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Scottie Scheffler, the world’s most dominant golfer, rose up the leaderboard of the PGA Championship on Friday, hours after he was arrested while trying to navigate a traffic backup caused by a crash that killed a pedestrian outside Valhalla Golf Club.

In an extraordinary sequence of events over about three hours, Scheffler was handcuffed while arriving at the course before sunrise, booked while wearing an orange jumpsuit in downtown Louisville and driven back to the course with stunned crowds following his every move as his newly hired local lawyer told reporters that he would comply with an investigation into his interaction with a police officer who was directing traffic. Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler’s day on the course finally began at 10:08 a.m. ET, when he teed off nearly four hours after his arrest. He went on to shoot a 5-under-par 66, climbing into a tie for third on the leaderboard. Scheffler, who said he began stretching in a jail cell Friday in hopes of returning to Valhalla in time for his tee time, said after the round his head was “spinning.”

“It was a chaotic situation and a big misunderstanding,” Scheffler said.

Following his second-round 66, Scottie Scheffler high-fived fans as he walked off the course to sign his scorecard.

Two spectators had T-shirts with Scheffler's face. One of the tees showed Scheffler's mugshot that the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections posted Friday morning when the World No. 1 was booked in downtown Louisville.

Scottie Scheffler said he feels his head is “still spinning” after the sequence of events he experienced on Friday. He was arrested and handcuffed Friday morning while arriving at the course before sunrise, booked in an orange jumpsuit in downtown Louisville, then returned to Valhalla Golf Club and shot a second-round 66 at the PGA Championship.

Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m., according to online court records, two days after the PGA Championship is scheduled to end.

Asked to encapsulate what transpired, Scheffler described his pre-round routine, which took place in jail.

“I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell that was a first for me,” Scheffler said after his second round.

Scheffler said his “main focus after getting arrested” was whether he could continue playing in the PGA Championship. He said that he was in “shock” when he got arrested and that he was “shaking for an hour,” trying to calm down.

While getting fingerprinted in jail, Scheffler said a police officer offered him a sandwich.

“Sure, I’ll take a sandwich, I didn’t eat breakfast yet,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler teed off at 10:08 a.m., nearly four hours after his arrest. He described Friday's round as “pretty good.”

“It was nice to be able to put together a solid round today for sure,” Scheffler said.

This isn’t pleasant to watch: Tiger Woods, a 15-time major winner, has carded his second triple-bogey seven in the space of three holes.

This time his game deserts him on the fourth, having also bogeyed the third. He’s now eight over — seven over for the round — and his hopes of making it to the weekend are long gone.

Culture and customs.

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Western influences (particularly in Amman and other large cities) have infiltrated Jordanian society so Jordan now possesses a mix of Arabian customs amid modern ways of life. Due to immigration, Jordan now has a significant Palestinian and Iraqi population, adding to the cultural diversity of the country.

Despite the outside influences, Islamic traditions are strong in Jordan with spectacular mosques signalling the call to prayer five times a day, Ramadan being observed each year and some segregation of the sexes occurring.

The desert-dwelling Bedouin have a distinct culture of their own, drawing on traditions that have been passed down for centuries. Living a largely nomadic lifestyle, the Bedouin rely on the herding of animals and the creation of handicrafts in the absence of a fertile environment to farm. With a strong musical heritage, traditional instruments are played and time-honored traditions are continued.

Hospitality is a crucial element of Jordanian culture. Most visitors will be humbled by the kindness, sincerity and genuine care showed by Jordanians. Being welcomed into peoples’ homes is common, and can probably be attributed to the custom of welcoming strangers and sharing food when travelling in the unforgiving desert.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Featuring typical Middle Eastern ingredients like lamb, chickpeas, garlic and a range of aromatic herbs and spices, Jordanian cuisine is delicious.

Things to try in Jordan

Like many other Middle Eastern countries, a plate of shared breads and dips is a great way to begin a feast.

This traditional Bedouin dish of lamb and yoghurt is usually served with rice and bread. This is the national dish of Jordan, so definitely try it before you leave.

These small, sweet pastries made with honey and nuts will have you going back for more.

The coffee in Jordan is strong. Often spiced with a hint of cardamom, coffee is strongly linked to the famed Jordanian hospitality, so drink up – it would be rude not to!

Geography and environment

Jordan is made up of a staggeringly diverse range of natural environments. From stark deserts to towering mountains, fertile wetlands, coastal reefs and urban cities, journeying through Jordan provides changing scenery and varying conditions.

Sharing borders with Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Jordan mixes modern architecture with heritage-filled buildings, well-manicured streets with historic alleyways and impressive mansions with simple homes.

Modern, developed cities like Amman and Aqaba feature unique architecture, spectacular mosques, five-star hotels and resorts. Small villages with rustic housing populate the less-built-up rural areas and Bedouin tents made of goat hair can be found in desert areas.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Jordan was originally inhabited by the Nabataeans thousands of years ago. Over the centuries, Jordan has been a place conquered and inhabited by many different people including the Romans, Greeks, Assyrians, Ottoman Turks, Egyptians and Mamluks (people of Kurdish origins). All these influences can still be seen today in Jordan's ancient ruins, architecture, crafts and arts. Many battles were fought in Ancient Jordan, including the Christian crusaders who clashed with Islamic Forces in Jordan during the 11th and 12th centuries. The first Muslim Dynasty began with the Umayyad Empire in 661.

Recent history

In 1950, Jordan was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and in 1951, King Abdullah I was assassinated while visiting a mosque. His eldest son became king but was removed from his duties in 1952 due to mental illness. In 1953, his teenage son Hussein Ibn Talal became king, and continued to rule for over 40 years. In the 1960s, Jordan saw many immigrants arrive and settle – mainly Palestinians escaping the conflict in their homeland.

In 1999, King Abdullah II succeeded his father King Hussein and continues to rule Jordan now. His reign has been characterised by liberal policies, economic reforms and technological advances. His wife, Queen Rania of Jordan, has a visible public profile, is active in many social causes and is regarded internationally as a highly influential woman.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa for Jordan?

Visas are required by all visitors entering Jordan.

Single entry visas valid for 14 days and can be obtained by most nationalities on arrival at the airport in Amman or at the Jordanian border for approximately JOD40.

It can be significantly more expensive to acquire your visa from the embassy in your home country.

If you require a stay longer than 14 days, visas obtained from the embassy in your home country will be valid for two months.

When is the best time to visit Jordan?

The weather in Jordan can get quite extreme. Overall, it tends to be hot during the day and cold at night (in desert areas, expect it to be extremely hot during the day and freezing at night). Yet during winter it can get bitterly cold, with snowfall occurring in some parts of the country.

Travelling during the summer months (June, July and August) can be challenging for those not accustomed to the heat, so visiting Jordan during spring and autumn is recommended for those who wish to escape the hotter temperatures.

Is tipping customary in Jordan?

Tipping is up to the individual in Jordan. Hotels and up-market restaurants typically add a surcharge that is included in bills, which is usually 10%. Rounding up bills and leaving spare change is a good idea when dining in smaller restaurants and when using taxis.

What is the internet access like in Jordan?

Internet access is growing rapidly in Jordan. Internet can usually be accessed from hotels and internet cafes in major cities. Expect little to no access in small towns, villages and other rural areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Jordan?

Mobile phone coverage is good in Jordan’s major cities and built-up areas like Amman and Aqaba. Expect limited to no phone coverage in more isolated areas like the desert. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Jordan?

Western-style toilets are common in modern hotels, malls and at popular tourist areas. Squat toilets are the standard throughout the rest of the country. Sometimes, you may need to pay and bring your own toilet paper when visiting public rest rooms.

Can I drink the water in Jordan?

Drinking water from taps in Jordan can be safe, depending on where you are. It's considered safe to drink water from modern hotels that have filtered water but perhaps not so from smaller establishments and in rural areas. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Peel fruit before eating and avoid ice in drinks.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Jordan?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in Jordan. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in Jordan?

ATMs are common in Jordan’s main cities so finding one won't be a problem. Rural and remote areas typically will have less ATMs so be sure to carry enough cash for purchases when away from the city.

Is Jordan LGBTQIA+ friendly?

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Homosexuality has been decriminalised in Jordan since 1951, and while Jordanians who identify as having an LGBTQIA+ identity will not be criminalised, many people continue to hide their sexuality or identity from their families and there is still a deep social stigma. As long as LGBTQIA+ travellers display some discretion and respect for local culture, particularly when visiting places outside of the major cities and tourist areas, they will have no problem visiting Jordan.
