High stakes at this year's MS Bike Tour for Winnipeg cyclist

'the diagnosis, of course, throws you into a tailspin,' says karen tweed.

Social Sharing

The first time Karen Tweed signed up for the MS Society of Canada's 170 kilometre bike tour, it was to reach a new fitness goal. Little did she know one month later she would be diagnosed with the same disease she raced for.

Now it's time to race again.

"The diagnosis, of course, throws you into a tailspin and trying to figure out life, and 11 years later I made a return," said Tweed.

Tweed's comeback to the bike race took some time. Her first symptoms came one month after her first race when an attack left her legally blind in her left eye. She received a probable diagnosis for multiple sclerosis, but it took a year and a half before it was confirmed.

It then took years to recover from the relapses and learn how to live with the symptoms of the disease.

Finding the right treatment also took time.

"I felt like I was Humpty Dumpty and all the pieces of my life were smashed and scattered all over the floor, and I have to try and put them all back together," said Tweed.

Tweed needed to learn about her rights in the workplace—an employer's duty to accommodate her new reality and her right to privacy. She had questions about driving, staying fit and coping emotionally with the diagnosis.

"There's a ton of information missing from the medical system and that's what the MS Society provides," said Tweed.

In 2014 Tweed's health had stabilized enough that she could get back on her bicycle and complete the MS Society's Biking to the Viking, the 170 kilometre trek from Stonewall to Gimli, Man.

This will be Tweed's third tour after the 11 year hiatus.

"There's more at stake now. The first time it was more about fitness and cycling but now I understand the importance of the research and finding better treatments. My future's at stake now," said Tweed.

The MS Society's Biking to the Viking takes place Aug. 20 to 21.

MS Bike, Canadian Society’s Annual Fundraiser, Returns to Live Rides

The word

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada  has opened  MS Bike , an annual cycling event to raise awareness and funds for research and services that make the difference for the more than 90,000 Canadians living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Conducted in an entirely virtual format due to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, this year marks the return of in-person cycling events, with virtual options also available.

“After two years apart, we’re thrilled to be coming together as a community in locations across the country for the MS Bike, raising awareness and important funds for those affected by MS,” Kyla Arsenault, senior director of community fundraising at MS Society of Canada, said in the group’s  press release .

“The MS Bike is a testament to the resilience of the MS community who have faced tremendous uncertainty, on top of an already uncertain disease, throughout this pandemic. Regardless of where or how they cycle, MS Bike participants are taking collective action to diminish that uncertainty and move us closer to a world free of MS,” Arsenault added.

To participate, cyclists are invited to register for any of 11 in-person bike rides across Canada or sign up to ride virtually in their own neighborhood. Individuals wishing to participate as a group can join an existing team or start their own.

The fundraiser, which runs over four months, kicked-off with the 24th annual Fraser Valley MS Bike in British Columbia on June 18 and 19. In-person events will run until the final ride — the 22nd annual Waskesiu MS Bike Ride  — on Sept. 17.

While COVID-19 restrictions may differ across in-person sites, the MS Society says it will monitor the situation and take all necessary safety precautions.

People choosing to take part in a virtual ride will have access to the same fundraising tools, resources, and rewards as those participating in in-person events, the society said.

After choosing their own date and distance, virtual riders can log their cycling progress and will receive an exclusive finisher medal upon showing that they biked for at least 90 km (about 56 miles).

Other fundraising rewards include MS Bike jerseys and shorts, with an MS Bike jacket available to those who raise CA$5,000 (about $3,850) or more.

Mary MacGregor has biked in the Leduc to Camrose ride in Alberta for almost 20 years, participating in her first ride the year she was diagnosed with MS.

“When you’re first diagnosed with MS, it’s easy to feel scared and isolated,” MacGregor said. “Being a part of the MS Bike that first year after my diagnosis was an emotional experience that allowed me to see that I wasn’t alone. There’s a lot of hope and optimism at the ride, which we continue to see year after year.”

With more than 2,100 registered participants and 382 teams, MS Bike has so far raised about CA$1.4 million toward its goal of CA$4.5 million.

Here are links to a full list of in-person events  and to register to ride virtually . Individuals wishing to make a contribution to MS Bike can donate on the event webpage.

MS Bike brings real community to 2021 event

Ride ambassadors across canada are bringing big spirit and support of the ms community to this year’s ms bike.

MS Bike is riding on for 2021, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is getting creative with how they’re helping riders train for, ride and get rewarded for their effort.

MS Bike is offering exclusive finisher medals to anyone who finishes their 90-km ride, in one day or over multiple rides, between September 12 and 18. There are also MS Bike ambassadors working across Canada to make sure this year’s event is just as fulfilling for riders as any other year.

We talked to two MS Bike ambassadors about what they’re doing to make 2021 MS Bike the most exciting year for new and returning riders, and why this year’s event is more important than ever.

RELATED: The MS Bike training plan: Week 1-3

MS BIKE VIRTUAL

Zena’s Warriors – Fighting for 28 years

Wanda Bouchard-Barry is one of MS Bike’s most committed ambassadors. When she brings her ride to the streets of Regina, Saskatchewan this summer it will be her 28th year of MS Bike .

For Bouchard-Barry, there was never a question whether or not she would participate in MS Bike this year. Since her first ride, it’s been an incredibly important part of her year.

“MS is my life. Participating in MS Bike for many years has become a part of my life. Nothing gets in the way of MS Bike – birthdays, anniversaries, even weddings! One year my niece had to ask when MS Bike was taking place – she was planning her wedding and didn’t want to book it on the MS Bike weekend. She really understood how important this was to me.”

Bouchard-Barry’s connection to the event started with her MS diagnosis in the early 90s.

“The information about MS Bike was shared with me by my pharmacists. They said that they were going to participate because of me. Neither of them were cyclists at the time. They raised over the fundraising minimum and took part, so I decided that if they were going to ride for me, I would volunteer!”

From volunteer to dedicated rider

Bouchard-Barry volunteered at MS Bike in 1992, driving a support vehicle. What she saw that year inspired her to change how she was involved.

“I watched all of those people, of all shapes, sizes and athletic ability riding, riding for me. That was it, the next year I was one of those people riding for myself, and riding for the many others who could not.”

After three decades, the tireless cyclist and fundraiser is as dedicated as ever. She still remembers the early years, before she was an experienced rider and fundraiser.

“I found it hard to do, hard to raise the minimum at the time, which was $195. But, over time, all of those $5 donations have grown into so much more. I have a wonderful group of friends who continue to support me over all of these years, they believe in the cause and in me.”

Now, Zena’s Warriors have raised thousands of dollars over nearly three decades. Since the event is so close to home, Bouchard-Barry and Zena’s Warriors are bringing that spirit to the online community event.

“Although we can’t ride together, we have a route mapped out and we’ll be sure to mark the occasion safely afterwards in celebration of yet another MS Bike gone by.””

ms bike tour manitoba

Riding to make a difference

For the 28th year, the smaller celebration keeps a personal touch when the usual crowd of riders are absent. It suits the continued role the MS Society of Canada has in Bouchard-Barry’s life, and the daily lives of so many Canadians living with MS.

“The MS Society was my lifeline. They were there when I needed help to understand my diagnosis, I cannot thank them enough. They were a source of information and support. If I had questions, they had answers.”

MS Bike opens an opportunity to give back after those early years, but also look forward. For Bouchard-Barry, the motivation lies in the opportunity to make a real difference.

“I want to know that in my lifetime I have done something. I want to raise as much as I can for as long as I can, to help make a difference. To help fund research, without research we would have no medication for MS (we have many different kinds now). Back when I was diagnosed, there were no medications. We have come a long way since then.”

“We are all hoping that someday soon there will be a cure found. It is my hope that no one would have to go through what I had to, to get diagnosed, to get help, to get medication.”

For Bouchard-Barry, that hope is all the motivation needed for another year of riding.

“I need to make sure that while I am still able to, that I do my part to end MS!”

MS BIke virtual

Team Canada

Not every MS Bike story starts with a personal connection.

“I originally just wanted to get involved in physical activity outside of biking to and from work and wanted to meet other cyclists,” says Jonathan Bragdon. 15 years later, he’s still coming back.

“I always speak highly of this event and have missed the in person atmosphere that it creates. After you’ve participated once, you really just can’t wait until the next event. “

With the event going virtual, Bragdon’s leading Team Canada to help others get through the added challenges of a virtual event.

“You really have to just get on the bike on your own motivation because there is not that physical in-person event you have to show up for,” says Bragdon. “There is not that, ‘I can’t let anyone see me give up because I didn’t train hard enough’ feeling.”

ms bike tour manitoba

Riders from coast-to-coast can register to be part of Team Canada through the msbike.ca website. Signing up with the group gives you access to training tips and a virtual meet and greet before the big ride day on September 18. For Bragdon, the extra effort to keep an in-person atmosphere at a virtual event is worth the effort.

“The pandemic had made fundraising difficult for the MS Society of Canada in 2020 and 2021. Fewer donations have come in but Canada’s rate of MS per capita still remains high,” says Bragdon. MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada.

“We need them more than ever so we can one day see an end to MS!”

So, whether you create your own team for a virtual ride between September 12-18, or join a nationwide team for your 90km, all MS Bike cyclists are riding together. In this cause, all roads lead to a shared finish line: A world free of MS.

MS Bike is an experience-driven event that brings the community together in exciting ways to help create a world free of MS. Achieving a world free of MS takes more than one person, and by participating in MS Bike our cyclists join thousands of participants across Canada all working toward this singular goal.

How Your Donation Helps

Money Raised Goes to…

People living with MS across Canada are at the heart of everything we do. The current health crisis has impacted all Canadians, and the need for information, resources and support programs for people affected by MS is as urgent and critical as ever. The money you raise ensures that people affected by MS receive quality access and support that they need in whichever community they live in. It is our priority to ensure we support programs and services that people can access across the country – regardless of where they live. Some examples of this programming include virtual wellness,  1:1 Peer Support , and our  MS Knowledge Network .

You can also check out   the MS Society 2020 Impact Report here .

It takes a Village….

Anyone can ride in these events across Canada. There is a minimum fundraising amount you have to meet to be eligible but that’s easy compared to what those who deal with MS have to endure.

In his words… “I hadn’t ridden a bicycle since the 70’s. Didn’t know how sore you could get from riding that distance.”

Last year I raised 52,056.00, and finally, let everyone know that I am close to the goal of 1 million dollars. I had kept this mostly to myself as extra motivation.

What Supporters Are Saying…

Barry’s passion for eliminating M.S. comes shining through with his dedication to the cause. Patrons can take pride in knowing they have helped Canada’s top fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis raise funds to find a cure that will eventually eliminate the disease. With just shy of $600K from one pub, imagine what several venues could do.

– George K

MS is an insidious disease that can strike and cause lives and families tremendous pain and suffering. Barry has dedicated himself, in remembrance of his sister Lynne, by raising hundreds of thousands of dollars and putting in the hours of training and dedication that it takes to fight this disease. He and all who participate in MS Rides are the heroes who deserve support for their efforts and desire to make a difference. Please find it in your hearts to support this worthy cause and help us find a cure.

– John L

Yes, Barry’s my uncle but aside from that, anyone that dedicates this much time and effort to helping others has huge respect in my books. Love to see how, as a result, people band together toward this great goal!

Riding Mountain Challenge- MS Ride

September 11, 2015 - september 13, 2015.

Be part of an unforgettable journey; a two day adventure that will challenge, motivate, and inspire you, the MS BIKE tour will make a difference in your own life and the lives of everyone touched by MS.

Gear up on September 12 & 13, 2014 for the Riding Mountain Challenge MS BIKE tour. Hundreds of cyclists will begin the tour on Day 1 in Dauphin, cycling 75 km through scenic Riding Mountain National Park. Once there, treat your sore muscles to a massage, tour around the town of Clear Lake, and enjoy a hearty meal at MS Bike Village catered by Irving’s Catering.

Get a good night’s rest and then start all over again on Day 2, cycling another 75 km from Clear Lake back to Dauphin. Once you arrive and catch your breath, grab a quick lunch at our wrap-up BBQ and then head home to share your photos, stories, and memories with friends and family.

Whether you’re a hard-core cyclist or a novice rider, gear up to end MS and join us on a journey you won’t soon forget!
