The volcano inside the 360 experience at Journey

I had dinner inside a ‘volcano’ at this new immersive restaurant and bar

This new spot near Madison Square Park brings theatricality to your dinner plate.

Shaye Weaver

On Monday, my dinner table began smoking and my dish emerged from a glass cover filled with even more smoke. The room glowed with the amber-red hue of lava and the sound of crackling fire filled the space.

I was at Journey , a new restaurant, bar and lounge that is bringing “theatrical gastronomy” to New York City with immersive video installations paired with fine dining and mixology.

On its surface, it may sound like a gimmick, but a deeper dive—actually experiencing it—yields a fun night out with actually good drinks and food.

RECOMMENDED: You must solve a cipher to enter this speakeasy-styled restaurant and bar

Journey, which had a soft opening this week at its Madison Square Park location at 27 West 24th Street, is a celebration of travel and the connections we make with people on our…well, journeys.

The playfully-decorated space shows off a massive collection of globes from thrift shops and antique stores, 3D sculptures of the world’s most famous landmarks and buildings above its bar, a display of replica antiquities, and a wall of moving classical art a-la Harry Potter.

Journey salon art

Each area within the space—the bar, the salon, and the café—has a theatrical element.

At the bar, the cocktails you order (Legends of the Fall, Bloody Sunset, Apocalypto and Adordable Ruby) have accompanying comedic skits via augmented reality projected right in front of you on the bar top, including whiskey professor Ben Vereen.

In the “Epic Café,” where you can order a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dishware has hidden 3D designs that you can unlock through an app on your phone.

In the beautiful and boothed Salon, which contains the collection of replica antiquities, projections bring sculptures to life and a hostess bedecked in stunning “FashionTech” couture tells you the stories behind them, adding a layer of live performance to your experience.

Journey Experience Bar

The bar, Salon and Epic Café each have their own menus from chef Edward Hong.

Two additional experiences are available at Journey: Journey Odyssey and Journey 360.

Opening on Friday, the 50-seat, ticketed experience Journey Odyssey creates a multisensory dinner experience at tables for two and four. Some of Broadway’s most talented performers— Cady Huffman and Judy Kaye —have filmed a series of amusing vignettes that introduce each of the five courses, which hail from different locales: an appetizer in Tokyo, the first course in Venice, and the entrée in Buenos Aires.

Journey Experience Bar

Perhaps the most impressive and immersive of all the experiences at Journey is Journey 360, which is where the firey table inside a volcano exists.

The ticketed culinary adventure, which fits 20 people at a time around a long, communal table, features 360 projection mapping that transports diners to four different locations across the world.

On Monday, I did the 360 experience and was whisked away (on a virtual airship named Celestine) from the top of the Empire State Building to the Amazonian rainforest to the artic, from a shipwreck under the sea to the inside of a volcano and finally to outer space. Throughout the entire five-course prix-fixe meal, the visuals and soundscape surrounding us were entertaining and were made even more exciting by an actor wearing a techie dress who led us through the trip.

Each dish corresponded to a setting—Amazonian greens (a salad made with Yuca, tocacho, hearts of palm, Cupaucu vinaigrette) in the rainforest; gin-cured arctic salmon (with cucumber, horseradish, apple and dill) at the Artic; black cod (with miyoga, bok choy and yuzu dashi glaze) under the sea; braised veal cheek (with forbidden rice risotto, harissa and marscapone); and raspberry mousse with chocolate gelato (almond texture, cardamom foam and Grand Marnier) in space.

Journey Experience Bar

While in the volcano, waiters placed dry ice on the table to make it smoke, then they brought out the veal, covered with glass domes. In one synchronous movement, the waiters lifted the domes and vapor poured out across the dish and our place settings. It was the crescendo, the high point, of the entire meal and it was indeed theatrical.

And yes, the visuals were fun, but the best part of the whole experience was seeing this all unfold with the people (strangers) around me. I ended up grabbing cocktails with a couple sitting across the way afterward in the salon, which is not a typical thing for me to do.

If you want to take your own journey in the middle of midtown, tickets for the shows Journey 360 and Journey Odyssey ($175pp) are available on the Tock app and at exploretock.com . Reservations for the Café or the Salon can be made through Open Table.

Think of it as a fine dining experience that’s been elevated by video installations, FashionTech, and theatre.

Helmed by Chef Edward Hong, the menu features New American cuisine with Korean influence that’s sure to satisfy. The entirely original concept takes interactive digital entertainment to the next level.

Journey Odyssey

Diners can have their pick from four various experiences —each unique in their own exploration and flavor profile. They range from ticketed to non-ticketed events. Every show lasts for a duration of about 90 minutes. Guests are expected to arrive 20 minutes before their experience begins.

Journey 360

Journey 360

This culinary voyage is a ticketed event that consists of transformative, floor-to-ceiling and tabletop 360 projection mappings. You’ll take your seat at a communal table fit for 20 and travel to five exotic destinations while you dine. Every course will take you on a new adventure, whether it’s a raging waterfall in the rainforest, the  side of a volcano, or an underwater shipwreck.

In total, Journey 360 is a five-course prix fixe meal, but insider tip, wait until you see the out-of-this-world (wink, wink) location you’ll be whisked away to at dessert. The experience truly brings you world-class dishes alongside a trip around the world, all without having to leave the table.

Journey Odyssey

Journey Odyssey

Another ticketed event, Journey Odyssey is most similar to Journey 360 except much more intimate. Instead of sitting at a communal table of 20, you’re at tables of 2-4 people.

Throughout five courses, Broadway’s world-class performers will introduce you to a series of comic vignettes. Your appetizer will begin in Tokyo , but before you know it you’ll be jet setting to Venice for your first course and Buenos Aires for the entrĂŠe.

Journey Lounge

Journey Lounge

This non-ticketed event will seat you at a lavish bar filled with paintings and objects that come to life! 3D animations will surround and entertain you as hostesses in FashionTech couture supply you with cocktail flights with integrated video directly projected on the top of the bar.

This salon is the perfect before and after dinner drinks stop or place to impress your friends on a night out.

Location and contact.

Came w high expectations and willing to pay for exquisite cuisine. Having enjoyed immersive dining before my point of reference was high , but also paid dearly for the privilege including 20 percent tip. Wine pairing was sparkling wine , Sauvignon blanc, Pinot gris ,... Shiraz and an intended moscato which I believe was exchanged in error for a 2nd round of pinot Gris Reasonable tasting pours for all whites , tiny Shiraz pour. Food was decent starting w a salad overpured w vinegar , then an appetizer tuna tartar bite followed by a very tasty octopus dish. The favorite by far followed by halibut w edamame purre and subsequently short ribs w grapes and a small garnish on the side. Too easy , too little on the sides. Desert was insignificant and served in a non descript shell that took up more space than the 3 small bites of dessert inside the shell. The Service was ok, staff did good and engaging job but were supposed to be the garnish on a fabulous dining experience. The themed story line was ok however multiple Graphics are poor definition Disappointed to consider how much I paid for this considering quality. Visit Frenessi and see the type of execution to be expected at this price. More

Amazing drinks, atmosphere, and waitstaff! The interior design offers many surprises. For dinner, the 360 and Odyssey rooms require reservations which I did not have, but they looked amazing. I can’t wait to come back!

Grand Opening of Immersive Theatrical Restaurant “Journey”

Feb 21, 2023

Grand Opening of Immersive Theatrical Restaurant “Journey”

By Melissa Griegel . . .

The stars came out on February 16 to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of New York’s most unique new restaurant. Journey, located at 27 West 24th Street, offers four diverse dining experiences under one roof. The restaurant, bar and lounge combines the latest in immersive video installments with fine dining and entertainment. Video projections abound on the walls, on your table, and on the bar top, with the actors in the videos talking to you and bringing you into their world.

journey restaurant nyc 24th street

Tony Award-winning producer Marc Routh ( The Producers , Hairspray ) teamed up with fellow producer Simone Genatt , restaurateur Alex Cesaria , Tony Award-winning scenic designer David Gallo , Executive Chef Edward Hong , and a whole team of people from the worlds of theater and dining to create a restaurant offering “theatrical gastronomy” to its patrons.

The expansive restaurant has four separate dining options. Journey Odyssey takes place in a separate dining room where live and filmed performances bring the diners’ tabletops to life with comic adventures led by an award-winning Broadway cast. Journey 360, also in its own room, has a communal dining table and transports the diners to five exotic locations for each of the courses of the prix fixe meal. This room also has 360º projections that surround the room, bringing the guests into a volcano and other locales. The main section of the restaurant, the Journey Salon, consists of a large lounge filled with couches, 3D sculptures on the walls, moving paintings that are projected along one wall, and filmed and live entertainment in the lounge and on the bar top. On the other side of the massive bar, on the street side with large windows, is the Journey Epic Café which offers a more casual dining experience and also includes augmented reality, bringing the dinner plates to life.

NYC Council Member for District 3, Erik Bottcher , was instrumental in helping the owners get the restaurant off the ground and was happy to be part of the ribbon cutting. Routh, Cesaria, and Genatt, all welcomed the guests, which included Broadway actors, directors, and producers J elani Remy , Richard Maltby Jr. , Jamie deRoy , Amanda LaMotte , Travis Waldschmidtt , Matt Lenz , Anthony C. Daniel , and Joshua Shakeshaft . The hostesses donned high-tech light up dresses by Journey partner FashionTech. The guests were introduced to the restaurant with an open bar and delectable canapes.

' src=

The first theater awards show of the season was held on Sunday night May 5 th at the NYU Skirball Hall. The Lucille Lortel Awards handed out 16 statuettes to the Off Broadway shows that played during the 2023-2024 season. While Broadway had 39 openings during the season Off Broadway premiered 75 shows throughout New York. The season was a diverse one with revivals of musicals and classic plays as well as fresh productions that have already landed on Broadway stages.

Marla Mindelle channels Celine Dion in Titanique – the opening number

The audience awaiting for the outcomes of the various competitions was excited and vocal in their enthusiasm as nominees were announced and recipients came to the stage. The diversity of those cheering reflected the mix of nominated shows being honored.

Presenter Jenn Colella

The evening opened with the prior year’s winner of Lead Actor in a Musical Marla Mindelle performed “I’m Alive” from Titanique, which only that day had its 750 th performance. Presenters Jenn Colella and Nikki M James, both currently starring on Broadway in Suffs , after the successful run at The Public last year. Their witty banter kept this early part of the evening fresh and energized and the credited script writers, David Beach and Laura Jordan could put scribes of the Oscars to shame. The pair handed out five awards including Featured Performer Musical, Kecia Lewis ( Hell’s Kitchen ); Featured Performer Play, Eli Gelb ( Stereophonic ); Outstanding Scenic Design, Kate Noll ( Wet Brain ); Outstanding Projection Design Nick Hussong ( Wet Brain ) and a category that the Tony Committee should include in their ceremony Outstanding Ensemble for (pray) . With five awards given out to four different shows it was clear that no show would be a sweep which was quite refreshing.

Eden Espinoza and Michael Esper, running downtown from their matinees of Lempicka and Appropriate , respectively handed out the next six awards including Outstanding Sound, Lighting and Costume as well as Choreographer, Director and Solo Show.

Presenter BD Wong

Ars Nova received the award for Outstanding Body of Work. Anne Kaufman presented the award noting that the company has fostered new talent since 2002 and has eleven different programs developing such artists as playwrights, actors, magicians, and comedians.

Interspersed in the awards a recreation of one of the dances from the Tony award winning Contact was presented with choreographer Susan Stroman introducing it to celebrate the show’s 25 th anniversary of its Off Broadway premiere.

Ruben Santiago-Hudson was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award

Ruben Santiago-Hudson was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Phylicia Rashad, who recalled her time acting with and being directed by this “exacting, open, demanding” professional. Humbled by the honor, he gave thanks to all the people who have inspired and helped him in his nearly four decade career.

Rosalind Chao and BD Wong were the final pair of presenters with the biggest awards of the night and, despite the excellent writing of the evening’s scripts, an improvised line by BD was definitely the funniest line of the night. (Ask anyone there to tell you what it was. I’m keeping mum).

Ten different shows were presented with at least one reward which shows the diversity of the winners is a good indication of what was produced Off Broadway this season. As was stated a number of times by the recipients and presenters, it was a difficult year for theater as New York slowly recovers from the pandemic but an evening like this gives one hope that live theater will endure with new and fresh voices and themes.

NICK NICKED? — Investigation Discovery’s  5-part series Quiet On The Set  has caused quite the commotion on the Left Coast. The series purports to tell the true story behind-the-scenes of Nickelodeon’s  many kid-oriented shows ( iCarly; All That; Zoey 101; Kenan & Kel; Drake and Josh; Sam and Cat; The Amanda Show;  and more) from 1994-2019. Supposed abuse from the creators and writers and the main target is Dan Schneider who ran the whole shebang for the network.

journey restaurant nyc 24th street

Questionable sketches and jokes all come into play and certainly take on a whole different light now than they did back then. Schneider was in the TV show  Head of the Class  from 1986-1991, along with Brian Robbins and Howard Hessman and the show was a major hit for ABC.

Robbins now is the head of Paramount.

Schneider’s former Nickelodeon  assistant called him a “ psychological tormenter.”

Schneider been accused of sexual impropriety and has just sued the producers of the show. Schneider is married to one Lisa Lillien who ran one of the most popular teen-magazines back then called Tutti Fruitti;  the other was BOP run by Julie Laufer.

I watched many of the shows back then and thought they were fun and well written. But now, with # MeToo , it’s a whole different ballgame. Read Page Six’s  take on the suit:

BON JOVI GOODNIGHT —  I have to say right from the start, Jon Bon Jovi’s Thank You, Goodnight  is a pretty terrific doc. Sure, it’s a tad downcast as he ponders over and over his legacy and if he has to quit … as he faces vocal issues. On the other hand, what he’s gone through is definitely worth telling. Perseverance really is where it’s at and this kid from Sayreville, Jersey certainly had it.

Funnily enough, the two bands that Jon wanted to open for, if it could happen, were The Cars and Bryan Adams.

I was close to several members of the Bon Jovi-inner sanctum in the 80’s and I can tell you first-hand it was a high time in every sense. Once they became stadium headliners, anything and everything they wanted, or thought they wanted, they could get.

Bon Jovi’s wife Dorothea isn’t mentioned at all until episode three, which I found somewhat odd and a brief foray into Jon starting a management arm is needless as well. Original manager Doc McGee is mentioned too … very quickly in fact.

Richie Sambora is included and though he doesn’t come off as well as one might expected, he does finally offer an apology for leaving the band as a tour was about to begin. Still, he seems somehow haggard and still at a loss to explain what his motivation really was.

It could have been three episodes as opposed to four in the Gotham Chopra-directed series, and yes, there are tell-tale signs of it being a VH1  expose story. But I did enjoy it, being very involved in that side of developing a band,  and it is worth a view.

BTW: Jon’s new single “Legendary” is pretty fantastic and he sounds great. Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g83Y19JezCM

SHORT TAKES — Legendary Guitarist Duane Eddy passed away on April 30. He was 86 years old. From Kent Kotal’sForgotten Hits: Between 1958 and 1963, Eddy placed sixteen songs in The National Top 40, including The Top Ten Hits “Rebel Rouser” (#6, 1958), “Forty Miles Of Bad Road” (#5, 1959), “Because They’re Young” (#3, 1960) and “Dance With The Guitar Man” (#9, 1962.)  He was inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994. His song “Because They’re Young” was the theme song to the film of the same name … Eddy also acted in the picture, as he did in “A Thunder Of Drums” and “The Wild Westeners.” Although his version of “Peter Gunn” wasn’t the highest charting version (it peaked at #23 in 1960), it was a song long-associated with his career.  Eddy recorded a new version with British rockers The Art Of Noise in 1986 that went to #50. His style was very distinctive … and he influenced countless wanna-be guitarists thru the decades.  (When BJ Thomas recorded his 1972 hit “Rock And Roll Lullaby,” producers said that they need to find somebody who could “sound like Duane Eddy” for the guitar solo break … to which someone ELSE said, “Why don’t we just get Duane Eddy?” … which is exactly what they did … “Can’t Say No To You” is the new single from Daryl Hall. Seems Hall & Oates is officially gone.

VIOSO Takes Diners on Immersive Journey in New York Restaurant

Billed as “theatrical gastronomy,” Journey , at 27 West 24th Street, offers a multitude of ways to dine and be immersed in entertainment. An offering from the brains behind some of the biggest Broadway shows, utilising the most advanced technology, Journey takes dining to the next level, pairing food by acclaimed chef Eddie Hong with projection-mapped visuals, audio and live actors.

The Journey restaurant is divided into four experiences: Journey Lounge, Journey Epic CafĂŠ, Journey Odyssey, and Journey 360. Thirty-seven ultra-high-definition video projectors, along with 12 OLED screens, fill the restaurant, totalling 250 million pixels.

One of the main challenges involved hiding from view the 37 projectors needed to create the experience. “We didn’t want this to look like a mess of AV equipment – the restaurant was designed by award-winning Broadway designers and has a unique aesthetic in itself, so I was dead-set in hiding the projectors in light shades and in the ceiling as much as I possibly could,” explains Jason McFerran of integrator Illuminating Magic. The star of the Journey experience is Journey 360, a private room that offers communal seating for up to 20 guests. Upon entering, diners are surrounded on every wall with seamless projection, even contiguous along the 24-foot table (12,288 pixels), while 12 projectors fill the chamber but hide neatly within the ceiling. Using a VIOSO camera calibration system, all projectors are kept in perfect warp and blend for the life of the establishment.

Illuminating Magic  has previously worked on other immersive dining experiences, including Le Petit Chef at New York rooftop restaurant The View, whose combination of four-course dining with 3D visual storytelling (guests’ meals are ‘cooked’ by the eponymous chef, who stands 6cm tall) has garnered millions of views on social media. Journey, however, is the first to incorporate several different dining experiences with varying levels: wall animations, bar-top, tabletop and full 360°.

The combination of a “cutting-edge video presentation with four channels of spatial audio to accompany your gastronomic adventure is what true immersion looks like – an unforgettable dining experience that caters to all five senses,” says Kevin Zevchik, US director of VIOSO. Further immersion is provided by enabling guests to interact with the environment around them – for example, by writing graffiti on the walls or creating unique snowflakes in the Arctic, all by using their smartphone.

Produced and developed by Zanim8tion, the Journey 360 video content – which includes journeys to the banks of the Amazon, the Atlantic Ocean floor and the inside of an active volcano – was created completely in Unreal Engine with a custom-made four-camera rig that renders the immersive 360° views. This, explains McFerran, came with additional “inherent risks, including camera intrinsics, parallaxes, Z-fighting, and quadrupled render errors”.

“Sustaining the 360° visuals is not only a feat from the content creation, but also a requirement from the VIOSO auto-calibration,” adds Zevchik. “Given the nature of the buildings in New York City, it is nearly impossible to guarantee a perfect blend every day without auto-cal.”

Playback is also handled by VIOSO hardware, with an Anystation Media server, powered by IOversal Vertex, delivering the ultra-high-resolution visuals key to providing Journey 360’s sense of immersion.

Since launching, the restaurant – and in particular Journey 360 – has garnered rave reviews from critics and customers alike, with positive reviews in Time Out and the New York Times and being named one of the top-four dining experiences in New York City by Forbes.

“We are delighted to have played our part in the creation of Journey, which has deservedly taken the New York dining scene by storm,” says Zevchik. “As a showcase for how immersive video, properly calibrated, can elevate the gastronomic experience, Journey has well and truly earned its place among the greatest dining experiences in the city that never sleeps.”

ThisBowl, a Sydney bowl spot, has opened in Noho.

Spring has sprung which means openings are on the horizon. Consider this your guide to all the new restaurants, bars, and cafes, that have opened recently. Here’s a roundup of the restaurants and bars that opened in May 2024. This list will be updated weekly. If there’s an opening in your neighborhood that we’ve missed, let us know at [email protected].

Bed-Stuy: The all-green Frog, a natural wine bar with a pool table, has expanded next door with Tadpole , a red-clad bar with live music. 356 Marcus Garvey Boulevard, near Jefferson Avenue

Bushwick: Bushwick has a new izakaya called Tora . 242 Himrod Street, at Knickerbocker Avenue

Chinatown : A new banh mi shop has planted its flag steps from bustling Canal Street . Tènten sells traditional and modern banh mi — they come topped with cold cuts, scallion omelets, char siu pork, and five-spice chicken. One version, called the New Yorker, is a chopped cheese sandwich with pickled daikon, carrots, and cilantro. Owners Lam Tran, Anh Phan, and Dylan Le are childhood friends from Hanoi, Vietnam. They previously ran the business out of a Nimbus cloud kitchen in Downtown Brooklyn; the Baxter Street storefront, which opened last month, is their first brick-and-mortar restaurant. 119 Baxter Street, near Canal Street

Crown Heights: Island Rib House , a new Caribbean spot, does a two-hour bottomless brunch for $55 per person. 611 Nostrand Avenue, at Bergen Street

Crown Heights: Whoopsie Daisy opened on May 1, in Crown Heights. It comes from a trio of owners who run Fiasco! wine shop nearby, Ivy Mix (also known for Leyenda), Piper Kristensen (Oxalis, Laurel Bakery ), and Conor McKee. There will be some snacky items on offer, and in the back, there’s a seasonal patio. 225 Rogers Avenue, near President Street

East Village: As Blank Street’s empire starts to fracture, Hidden Grounds Chai & Coffee House , which also has locations in New Brunswick, Jersey City, Hoboken, and Williamsburg, replaces the former coffee shop. 36 Third Avenue, between Ninth and 10th streets

East Village: Rodrigo Nogueira, who worked at Manhattan restaurants, Burke and Wills and Blacktail, has opened No More Café . Inspired by the cafes of Paris and his “personal journey towards a sober lifestyle,” the new spot will serve alcohol-free cocktails and small plates. No More Café reflects an increasing trend over the past five years, that hopes to create third spaces for people looking to lessen their drinking, with cocktails that are just as mature in flavor, sans booze. 352 E. 13th Street, near First Avenue

Flushing: After Chinese chain Hey Tea made land with its first New York cheese tea location, in Midtown, now the team has expanded to Queens. 36-56 Main Street, near 37th Avenue

Gramercy: Wild Ivy, a tavern-style bar, only opened this past October, but the team has already rebranded it to now be called Seven Sins , per a spokesperson. 293 Third Avenue, near East 23rd Street

Hell’s Kitchen: Nan Xiang Express , a fast-casual offshoot of the famed soup dumpling restaurant of the same name in Flushing, has opened its fifth takeout location. 654 Ninth Avenue, at West 46th Street

Hell’s Kitchen: Saint Resto-Lounge is a new area cocktail lounge, according to Resy. 626b 10th Avenue, at West 45th Street

Long Island City: Building off success in Midtown, the Greats of Craft has opened a location of its craft beer and wine bar in Long Island City. 10-15 43rd Avenue, at 11th Street

Noho: FishBowl, first established in Sydney, Australia’s Bondi neighborhood back in 2016, quickly grew to more than 40 locations. Now, the team has opened its first New York outpost, under its new name , ThisBowl , hoping to break through Manhattan’s crowded salad bowl options. According to the New York Times , the result is “a cardboard bowl of shredded cabbage and poached chicken with miso dressing that actually may surprise and delight you.” That’s no small potatoes given the banality of most salad chains these days. 65 Bleecker Street, near Lafayette Street

Nolita: Butcher’s Daughter , a vegetarian-friendly restaurant of Kenmare popular with the brunch set, has expanded on the block to take over what was a Bluestone Lane coffee shop, now with a stone pizza oven. 19 Kenmare Street, at Elizabeth Street

Rockefeller Center: Luke’s Lobster , known for its lobster rolls, has opened a ninth location, the latest to join the rink-level fray, also home to Jupiter, from the King team. 30 Rockefeller Center, Rink Level

South Williamsburg: The new coffee shop Ants , which plans to host pop-ups, is now open, according to the team. One of the partners is a beverage director at bar Public Records. 102 Broadway, at Berry Street

Times Square: After closing Charlie Palmer Steak , Charlie Palmer Steak IV has opened with a fancy dining room that includes velvet, antiqued leather, printed hides, and pebbled leather. The menu includes oysters, caviar, and seafood towers; seasonal fresh pastas made in-house; fish and seafood dishes; as well as steak and vegetables. 6 Times Square, at West 42nd Street and Broadway

Tribeca: New bakery Brooklyn Bread Cafe , which has outposts in Park Slope and Carroll Gardens, has opened in Lower Manhattan. 111 Murray Street, near West Street

Upper East Side : Burp Bowl Cafe , a Chinese restaurant in Kips Bay, has opened another outpost further uptown. 1812 Second Avenue, at East 94th Street

Upper East Side: Gazette from co-owners and siblings, Madalina Iavarone and Bogdan Dinu has opened, a bistro in Yorkville named for a love of newspapers; the cooking comes from Dinu, turning out dishes like a spring soup, seared scallops, and chicken Milanese. 1582 York Avenue, between East 83rd and 84th streets

West Village: Lower Manhattan’s last remaining gas station is now home to Smacking Burger , an actually good burger stand , according to Eater critic Robert Sietsema. 51-63 Eighth Avenue, at West 13th Street

Williamsburg: Esse Taco is a Mexico City-style taqueria that opens today, May 2, from acclaimed chef Enrique Olvera, most known for his Mexican fine dining spot Pujol. 219 Bedford Avenue, near North Fifth Street

Williamsburg: Kolkata Chai Co. , which began in the East Village in 2019 , later expanding to Nolita, has opened its first location in Brooklyn on April 30, according to its Instagram. 658 Driggs Avenue, at Metropolitan Avenue

College sports | um basketball coach jim larraĂąaga to be honored with joe lapchick character award.

journey restaurant nyc 24th street

NEW YORK — Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga is one of four recipients of this year’s Joe Lapchick Character Award.

Larrañaga has spent the last 53 years coaching in college since he got his start as an assistant at Davidson College in 1971. Larrañaga had stops at American International and Bowling Green before coming to George Mason in 1997. It’s at that school he burst onto the national scene as he guided the Patriots to the Final Four in 2006. The school upset top-seeded and defending champion Connecticut, rallying from a 12-point deficit in the first half. Their run ended with a loss to eventual champion Florida in the national semifinals.

From George Mason, Larrañaga went to Miami where he has coached from 2011 until now. He has won 740 games in his career.

Lon Kruger, another of the recipients, built the reputation for fixing struggling programs as he had success wherever he coached. He became the first Division I coach to lead five different programs to the NCAA Tournament, doing so with Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV and Oklahoma.

He took four of them to the Sweet 16 and Florida and Oklahoma each reached the Final Four. He won 674 games in his career before retiring after the 2021 season.

“His track record of successfully rebuilding programs everywhere he coached is made even more impressive when considering how he did it,” Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said at the time of Kruger’s retirement. “He won with integrity, humility, class and grace. He did it with superior leadership skills and a genuine kindness that included his constant encouragement of everyone around him.”

Fran Dunphy is the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history. He has won over 600 games in his 31 years as a head coach. He has coached at Penn, Temple and his alma mater La Salle.

At Penn, Dunphy shined coaching from 1989-2006 where he won 10 Ivy League titles and a record 48 straight conference games from 1992-96. His 1993-94 team went 25-3 and was ranked 24th in the nation. The Quakers defeated Nebraska in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Dunphy’s career continued at Temple, when he took over for Naismith Hall of Famer John Chaney in 2006. The Owls advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times in his 13 years, including a run of seven consecutive seasons from 2007-13.

He then came home to La Salle in 2022 as its coach for the past two seasons.

Dianne  Nolan spent four decades in athletics, including leading Fairfield as its women’s head coach for 28 years. She helped lead the Stags in their transition into a Division I program in 1981. She won a program-record 456 games at the school and led the Stags to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including one as an at-large team in 2001.

After coaching at Fairfield, she spent some time at Yale and finished out her coaching career in charge of Lafayette. In her 38 years of coaching, every senior player graduated with a degree.

This is the 16th year the award will be presented to those who have shown the character traits of Lapchick, who coached at St. John’s and with the New York Knicks. The quartet will be honored at a luncheon on Sept. 24 in New York.
