Sea Kayak Europe

Surrounded on three sides by seas, and with hundreds of rivers and lakes, Europe is a paddling paradise. We’ve chosen a few beautiful destinations that offer a superb European kayak adventure ! Our lodge-based kayak tours in the warm waters of the Mediterranean are idyllic.  Scotland’s Whisky Trail blends scenic paddles with cultural immersion.  The mix of paddling by day with comfortable, authentic local accommodations at night, makes for the perfect recipe for a life-enriching journey.  Imagine paddling along the dramatic and mountainous coast of Corsica just south of mainland France. Or in the turquoise waters of the Adriatic off the coast of Croatia; the deep-blue of the Ionian Sea along the coast of Albania and Greek island of Corfu or; the lapping waters of Scotland’s Atlantic.  The paddling is generally moderate on these trips, although we can lengthen distances and options for more enthusiastic and experienced kayakers.

For nature-lovers, the mountainous island of Corsica, birthplace of Napoleon, is like nowhere else in Europe.  Unlike Sardinia to the south, which has developed much of its coastline, Corsica remains wild and sparsely populated. Our French kayaking tour, Compelling Corsica, features a mix of hiking and sea kayaking.  The trip is planned to allow for maximum flexibility so we can hike or kayak on various days, depending on the weather.  A highlight is paddling in the UNESCO World Heritage area of Gulf of Girolata and the Scandola Reserve.  Pink sandstone cliffs, mountains that jut abruptly from the sea, warm, welcoming water and delicious French cuisine make this trip a winner!  In fact, it was chosen by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of their 2015 Tours of a Lifetime!

Three-Country Kayaking Tour

Further east we offer a couple of kayaking options in the Adriatic and Ionian seas.  Our signature Three-Country European kayak tour features paddling in Croatia, Montenegro and Albania!  No one other than Sea Kayak Adventures offers this incredible combination of culture and kayaking.  Starting in the legendary walled-city of Dubrovnik, we paddle a few days in the Elafiti Islands where cobble-stone beaches, centuries-old stone houses and magical azure waters await.  Lodging is in a local bed and breakfast with delectable Croatian meals each day.  We paddle to and from our base island each day, exploring the beauty and intrigue of the area.

From here we head south to Montenegro for a kayak tour of Kotor Bay, another Renaissance-era town with narrow streets and warm architecture.  We continue south to overnight in the coastal town of Budva.  Our next morning takes us to Albania, the once-forbidden country that only opened to tourism in the 1990’s.  Here we have a marvelous mix of kayaking the Ionian sea and experiencing the unusual mix of Ottoman-era architecture and culture influenced in the past century by close ties to Italy.  The local cuisine expresses this mixed pedigree in scrumptious meals that are the best of what is today considered Turkish cuisine, with a splash of Italian influence.  We meet and interact with many locals along the way as we learn about the fascinating and complex history of this corner of Europe.

Albania Kayaking Tour

We also offer a sea kayak and walking tour set entirely within Albania.  Our Kayaking the Ionian Sea trip offers a more complete introduction of the country and explores more of the interior.  Albania is a tapestry of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture and history.  The coast of white-sand beaches and rocky coves leads to a mountainous interior with spectacular peaks, pastoral valleys and wild river canyons.

Scotland Kayaking, Walking & Whisky

For those seeking a to explore the north of Europe, our Kayaking, Walking & Whisky – Scotland’s Highlands & Coast is an excellent choice with some of the best sea kayaking in Europe combined with hikes to explore sites and culture of the Scottish Highlands.  On this kayaking tour of Scotland, dramatic scenery of rugged coastline and verdant landscape join with castle ruins for a deep dive into history.

The trip explores Cairngorms National Park as well as the Scottish Sea Kayak trail, among many other highlights.  We stay in quaint country inns and small hotels, and visit several whisky distilleries as we journey.  A perfect blend of activity with culture, this is a trip to love.

Kayaking The Caria Coast of Turkey

The turquoise waters of Turkey are steeped in history and magic!  Join us to explore ancient Greek and Roman ruins, paddle between villages set among olive groves and swim in warm, transparent waters.  While this is a new trip for 2021, we've been going to Turkey since 1984 and know the country and its coastline well.  Superbly friendly people, one of the greatest cuisines in the world , and charming hotels and inns for comfortable overnights,  make this a marvelous trip.  Add time in Istanbul before or after your paddle,  where Byzantine and Ottoman architecture graces one of the most dramatic cityscapes you'll ever find.  For those with a bit more time,  also consider visiting other-worldly Cappadocia.

If you combine the infrastructure and people’s culture, and history, you can derive the perfect combination for more exceptional kayak holidays.

Kayakers find diversity is not just the type of kayaking , but also the style of holiday. An attractive tour everyone could imagine could be a cultural tour of Venice by kayak.

Alternatively, how about exploring the Arctic wilderness of Norway’s eye-catching Lofoten Islands?

Likewise, floating downstream through the French wine region of Bordeaux attracts many adrenaline junkies throughout the year. Kayaking with basking sharks in Ireland is a fun activity as well.

In order to narrow down your choice for the type of trip, the best European kayaking destinations are divided down into rivers, lakes, and sea sections. We’ve tried to incorporate a range that could include as many styles of European kayak holidays as possible.

If you are an experienced kayaker, you can expect some well-known destinations you’ve heard of, and hopefully some you will listen to for the first time.

So, are you ready to shake your paddle?

Best European Kayaking Destinations: Rivers

Kayaking in rivers often includes whitewater , but that is not the case always. Rapids are categorized from Class I to Class V. This category is compliant with the International Scale of River Difficulty . Class I and II are graded as the easiest and most suitable for novices, and V is the most difficult and is for veterans and experts only.

Our experts rate the following destinations as the best river for a Europe kayak holiday. Please note the list contains not only the whitewater spots but also options available for relaxing river breaks suitable for beginners and families.

Let’s get started!

Ardeche, France

This kayaking destination consists of the 30km Ardeche gorge in southeast France. It offers one of the most popular kayaking experiences in Europe. The canyon is no doubt strikingly beautiful. Kayakers find passing under the infamous Pont D’Arc is adventurous. The Port D’Arc is a massive natural stone bridge.

Complete beginners favor this spot very much. Rapids here are graded as class I to III rapids (dependent on water level). Therefore, kayaking adventure holidays in Ardeche Rapids and relaxation are suitable for beginners.

Beginners can kayak through the rapids most of the time easily. In the summer, the waters get warm. Moreover, families looking for lazy, sunny days on the river frequent Ardeche Rapids.

Several spots are good for a lunch break. You can have a swim around the places and enjoy the scenery. In the spring, water flow becomes even faster. If you are really up for the challenge, you can take on the full 60 km descent.

The descent smoothly crosses dams on fun canoe toboggans. There are lots of outfitters, allowing kayak renting and guided tours . This is a river exquisitely geared up for kayaking.

The guiding family here has 25 years of experience. Also, individual kayaking adventures absolutely favor Adventure Ardeche. So we propose it too. They also run kayaking clinics, catering for all levels of the kayaker (from beginner to advanced), and offer different kinds of activity breaks including kayaking as part of a more important holiday. They are a United Kingdom-based company formulated in France, providing excellent service.

Southern French Alps, France

While visiting France, you will encounter some of the best white water on the continent. It is in the Southern French Alps where you will get to see the most outstanding white water. Rivers such as the Bonne, Guil, Durance, Toulouse, and Ubaye all offer precisely challenging kayaking that is in the right conditions is appropriate for experts only.

The rivers are all quite close to each other and could be dominated on a single trip. This destination is perfect for European kayak holidays if you are an experienced kayaker. Many kayakers want to switch to different rivers while paddling. Moreover, this offers an excellent opportunity.

You can discover more on our guide to kayaking in the French Alps.

This is one of the best family canoeing holidays destination in France if you are more into canoeing than kayaking. 🙂

Bordeaux, France

Bordeaux is another of the major European kayaking destinations in France. Paddling in Bordeaux involves kayaking from vineyard to vineyard. Kayakers get to explore the beautiful wine region. You will like the wine-tasting kayak style along the Dordogne, Gironde, or Garonne.

These rivers are mostly calm, so you can often avoid what rapids there are. Outfitters can organize wine-tasting kayaking tours . Or, you can hire shops if you prefer to organize it yourself. This is the perfect way to travel to the Aquitaine region of France, an area of exceptional beauty and impressive wines.

Normandy, France

The final area in France we’ll be discussing…. The major kayaking in Normandy envelops the stunning Parc Naturel de Normandie-Maine. This is located on the Sarthe and Varenne rivers. There are one-day and multi-day kayaking tours offered, the rapids are graded class I to III, so more appropriate for beginners and families.

Soca Valley, Slovenia

The Soca is a 140-kilometer-long river that flows through western Slovenia and northern Italy, with its source emanating from the Julian Alps. This is particularly an Alpine river with an elevation of around 1,100 meters, smoothly passing by Slovenia’s highest peak, Triglav at 2,864 meters.

The dazzling bright green waters are prominent for kayaking. There are a variety of rapid grades, including some very tough class IV and V sections. With a selection of day and multi-day tours, this is easily one of the best European kayaking destinations. It is perfect for those looking for something with a bit of a bite.

Noce, Italy

Noce is world-renowned for European and World Championship events. The Noce is situated in the Brenta Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy. Supplied by melting glacial ice it floods wildly through the heart of the Val di Sole (Valley of the Sun). Conditions remain favorable in the spring.

In the upper reaches, you’ll be able to enjoy some delicious class III to IV rapids. However, as the river flows past the villages of Ossana to Caldes, you will encounter difficult class V white water. The Noce is definitely one of the best European kayaking destinations if you are looking for challenging rapids.

Aosta Valley, Italy

The Dora Baltea river that flows through the Aosta Valley has the finest whitewater in the Italian Alps. With rapids graded classes III to IV, they are difficult and require previous experience. Although there are some easier sections that beginners will find favorable.

Tara Canyon, Bosnia

Tara Canyon is the largest canyon in Europe. And, it is one of the 10 biggest in the world per se. It is unexpected that more people have not heard of Tara Canyon. Tara Canyon is recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Tara Canyon not only looks beautiful but also feels very clean – apparently, travelers drink the water straight from the river.

The rapids are graded from class III to V, so this keeps the kayaking experience enjoyable along the 25 km gorge. Tara Canyon is one of the best European kayaking spots if you want to kayak somewhere incredible that most people have not heard of.

Zrmanja And Krupa Rivers, Croatia

The warm, clear waters of the beautiful Zrmanja and Krupa rivers in Croatia offer an excellent opportunity for exploration. Undoubtedly, the rivers are one of the best European kayaking destinations. There are some light rapids that beginners can negotiate, but the main challenge is the stunning waterfalls and concealed pools that make for great kayaking .

Zrmanja Kayaking

To kayak the Zrmanja and Krupa, you can try Huck Finn Adventure Travel. Opportunities are available for both day trips and multi-day kayaking tours – you can also complement the adventure with some sea-kayaking.

Danube, Central Europe

Paddling through the course of the Danube is one of the most attractive European kayak holidays. It is the second-longest river in Europe! It passes through, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

No river in the world flows through these many countries!

Amazing, right?

As a way of exploring Europe, kayaking down the Danube offers a marvelous experience. Kayaking down the Danube River allows you to explore amazing cities such as Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, and Belgrade. Moreover, you will get to see many places of historical and cultural significance.

Outside of the urban areas, it goes through the stunning countryside including the famous Danube Delta.

Best European Kayaking Destinations: Lakes

If kayaking in freshwater doesn’t interest you, then check out the lakes below.

Kayaking in lakes is particularly favorable for beginners. It is because lakes are often safer than rivers or the sea, so it is a grand place for beginners to give it a try. In our opinion, these are the top lakes for Europe’s kayak holidays.

Lakelands, Ireland

You can’t but explore one of the most kayak-friendly countries in the world. Ireland is undoubtedly a treasure trove for kayakers. So, Ireland should be an excellent choice as one of the best European kayaking destinations.

The Lakelands of Co. Fermanagh present a marvelous amount of inland kayaking variety, with Lough Erne it’s an ultimate jewel.

Besides, there is an all-embracing system of canals running the length of Ireland connecting diverse waterways to the River Shannon.

Ireland, in reality, is a paddler’s glory; the hard thing with Ireland is thinning down where to go. So rent a car and drive to all the best spots.

Lake Garda, Italy

Well-known as a beautiful spot with homes for the affluent and famous Lake Garda is an exciting destination to kayak in Europe. It’s situated in northern Italy not too far from Milan.

Propel out onto the water first thing in the morning, before the lake is all alive, and you’ll realize the significance of pure tranquility. As the sun looms behind the mountains and the water softly laps around you, it’s difficult to picture a better spot for kayaking than this.

Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como is picturesque enough to attract Hollywood. Parts of the lake were used in Star Wars Attack of Clones. Jinx, as I am writing this on May the Fourth – Star Wars fan remember this day Star Wars day! It is roughly half the size of Lake Garda, but much quieter. The two lakes are beautiful.

You’ll be cruising enveloped by mountains, with charming towns and villages scattered around the edge. Heaven!

Loch Ness ‘Coast To Coast, Scotland

This lake offers an excellent opportunity to spot the Loch Ness Monster. But, you can go after the Caledonian Canal across Scotland. Recognized as one of the most significant waterways in the world, it connects Fort William in the southwest of Scotland with Inverness in the east.

On route, it flows through the Great Glen geological fault that comprises four lochs and continual dazzling scenery. The route stretches 60 miles long and takes about five days for complete exploration.

Is Kayaking Popular In Europe?

It’s becoming increasingly popular in Europe due to the increased number of rivers, lakes, and seas within its borders as well as its low-impact nature that reduces injuries compared with other sports like swimming or canoeing which are also very popular in the region.

There is evidence to suggest that kayaking is only popular in the US, Canada, and some European countries. In Europe, kayaking has not taken off in the same way as it has in North America.

Do I Need A License To Kayak In the UK?

In the UK, kayaking requires a license. There are certain types of kayaks and paddles that you need to be licensed for.

The most recent legislation to change the law is in 2004. Kayaking has been made a lot easier since then but some people still choose to get their license because they like the tradition of it and they are proud of their abilities.

Kayaking has long been a popular activity in the UK, especially with outdoor enthusiasts, who often choose to go out on open water when they want to cool off or enjoy nature. However, it is not easy to escape from the shoreline without a license or without knowing how to swim at all!

Can I Kayak In The Thames?

Yes! There are a few conditions that need to be met before you can go out and try this though such as safety precautions, regulations, etcetera.

There are many different situations where you might want to kayak in London. You may want to kayak down the Thames or visit the nearby river, for example.

In general, there is no law or regulation that prohibits you from kayaking in the Thames. However, your safety and well-being come first. If you’re not sure about what you’re doing, it’s best to avoid it and contact your local police force for advice first.

Where Can I Kayak In Milton Keynes?

Milton Keynes is a great place to kayak due to its many waterways. It also has good access to the River Great Ouse which flows through the city.

There are two places you can kayak in Milton Keynes: in the Grand Union Canal and on the River Great Ouse.

The Grand Union Canal is a popular place for kayaking in Milton Keynes, as it passes by some of the most picturesque parts of town and takes you under bridges, round bends, and along a valley before ending at The Latchmere Basin.

It’s only a five-minute walk from the town center and is surrounded by public parks and waterways.

It should be noted that also be careful of some of the larger water bodies such as the Grand Union Canal, which has a significant number of locks. These locks can sometimes create large waves or currents as they are raised or lowered.

Can You Kayak On Loch Lomond?

The answer: Yes, you can kayak on Loch Lomond!

Loch Lomond is the largest freshwater loch in Scotland, measuring approximately 20 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide.

Bottom Line

Traditionally Europe may not be one of the world’s most popular kayaking destinations. But, Europe has plenty to offer for those who take the time to explore the continent. We discussed the top destinations for kayak lovers in this article.

Day 2 (Vis town - Okljucna bay)

Say your farewells to the mainland as you embark on a ferry journey to Vis, a captivating island with a history dating back to the 4th century BC when it was founded by the Ancient Greeks. Upon arriving in the ancient town of Vis after a scenic two-and-a-half-hour ferry ride, take advantage of some free time to explore the rich historical tapestry of the town while our team prepares kayaks for the tour start. Once geared up, venture onto the water to explore the renowned Vis Bay, the site of historical naval battles between the English and the French in 1811. This clash resulted in the English taking control of the island and establishing it as a stronghold. As you exit the bay, pass by Host Island, named after the British general who led the navy to victory during the battle mentioned above. The next stop on our journey is a mysterious navy tunnel constructed by the Yugoslav army during the Cold War.

Transitioning from fortifications to nature, paddle along the breathtaking north side of Vis Island. Revel in the sights of dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches scattered along the route. The day concludes at the picturesque Okljucna Bay, where the kayaks are left for the night. A short hike and van transfer takes you to Komiza village, your base for the next four nights.

Komiza, an authentic fishing village, embodies the “take it easy” life philosophy known as “pomalo.” Indulge in the enchanting ambiance of this charming village which offers numerous gastronomical options with traditional delicacies and local wines, crafting the perfect conclusion to each exhilarating day of kayaking.

  • Highlights:  Town of Vis, Navy tunnels, Okljucna bay
  • Distance: 7Nm (12km)
  • Meals: Picnic Lunch

Day 3 (Okljucna bay - Komiža town)

Your day starts with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a captivating 2-hour hike to Okljucna Bay. Traverse through lush, scenic nature, where your kayaks await, marking the continuation of our sea adventure. A van transfer back to Okljucna Bay is available for those opting out of the hike.

Embark on today’s kayaking adventure, navigating a route that unfolds along a dramatic coastline adorned with towering cliffs, intriguing stone formations, secluded beaches, and a sprinkling of small islets. As we paddle along the coast, take in the beauty of charming beaches, including the renowned Barjoska Beach, famous for its role in the film “Mama Mia- Here We Go Again.” Beyond its cinematic allure, this beach boasts beautifully preserved nature and perfectly round pebbles. The awe-inspiring natural scenery persists as we enter Komiza Bay, adorned with equally mesmerizing beaches, some featuring freshwater springs breaking through greenish volcanic rocks.

Today’s paddle concludes in front of our accommodation in the idyllic Komiza village, providing a serene end to the day’s sea exploration.

  • Distance: Hiking: 8km; Kayaking 7Nm (12km)

Day 4 ( Island Bisevo visit )

Today we rest from kayaking and spend a day exploring the stunning Biševo island. A short boat transfer will take us to the island of Biševo. This island is famous for its amazing caves, sandy beaches, and red wine sort Plavac Moli but mostly for its Blue cave phenomenon.

After passing the channel between Vis and Biševo, we will enter the magical Blue Cave. This cave is 18 meters long, 6 meters deep, and 6 meters high and is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Croatia. Morning sunbeams that penetrate through the submarine opening reflect off the white bottom floor, coloring the cave blue and giving the objects in the water a silver shimmer. It’s surely a jaw-dropping experience. After the Blue Cave visit, we will hike to the heavenly sandy Porat beach, one of the rare white sand beaches on the Croatian coast. During the day you’ll hopefully get the chance to bump into a few of only 19 inhabitants still living on the island.

  • Highlights: Blue Cave, Porat sandy beach
  • Distance: /

Day 5 (Komiža town – Rukavac bay)

Embark on a mesmerizing journey as we paddle along the renowned south side of Island Vis, where nature has sculpted a scenic coast with dramatic cliffs, coves, and beaches over thousands of years.

Today’s route will showcase numerous natural works of art, with a few standout highlights. Our first mention goes to the spectacular Gace (transl. „the Pants“) cliffs, an awe-inspiring masterpiece created by two massive pillars rising from the sea and seamlessly merging into the cliffs above, forming a shape resembling the pants of a giant. Another standout feature is the Instagrammable Stiniva Beach, a secluded sanctuary surrounded by amphitheater-shaped cliffs. One more, Pritiscina Bay, is a hidden bay nestled between impressive cliffs, that will captivate us with its tranquility and pristine waters. As we continue our exploration, we’ll encounter Sebrna Beach, a long pebble beach where the underwater world shimmers like silver, earning it the name Srebrna, meaning Silver.

The day concludes in Rukavac Bay, from where we’ll be transferred back to Komiza for our accommodation. Since this marks the culmination of our sea odyssey, we’ll treat you to a farewell dinner to savor local specialties such as Peka with lamb, veal, or octopus, accompanied by homemade bread and the typical local wine crafted from the authentic Vis grape variety, Vugava. This final evening promises a delightful celebration of our coastal adventure.

Day 6 (Rukavac bay -Vis town)

Along this scenic route, you’ll pass by a group of islands including Ravnik, Budikovac, Parzana, and Greben.

The first stretch concludes in the pristine Vela Smokova Bay, where we’ll pause for lunch amid its sandy beauty and crystal-clear waters. Afterward, paddle onward toward the imposing Stoncica lighthouse.

The last segment of our kayaking journey will lead us from Stoncica to Vis town. Upon reaching Vis town, take some time to explore the surroundings and seek out authentic souvenirs. The day culminates as we board the ferry back to Split, reflecting on the memories and experiences gathered throughout our coastal odyssey.

  • Highlights: Budikovac Island, Stoncica lighthouse.
  • Distance: 8NM (15km)

The old fishermen’s town of Komiza, one of the prettiest coastal towns on the entire Adriatic Sea, still keeps that Mediterranean charm. The town hosts a beautiful old port, many taverns, cafés and shops, and several pebble beaches all within walking distance.

We use comfy 3-star apartments and guesthouses where you will have a room with a private bathroom. We handpick the units making sure they are centrally located, with a character, and close to the sea.

The package includes double room occupancy, meaning two people being accommodated in a room with a two-person (double) bed. Twin beds are rarely available, and you should specifically require them upon booking.

komiza vis accommodation red adventures

We choose to use German high-quality Prijon brand kayaks for our touring expeditions because of several reasons: – Wide range of Prijon kayaks can accommodate any type of paddles. We have models for light, medium and high weight, short and tall paddles. We can adjust kayaks for each person individually thanks to their comfortable touring seat system, lightweight 3D-thigh braces and slide footrest. Therefore, you can easily find and adjust your individual seating position. – High storage capacity enables you to take a lot of luggage and gear with you on your multi-day expedition. Being such a great load carrier, our expeditions are much more hassle-free. – HTP material is perfect for Dalmatian rough coast and can tolerate some contact with sharp rocky coast, which makes our kayaking more trouble-free. – Their fast and safe shape is designed for typical wind/wave situations on the Adriatic Sea, especially choppy waves during summer. – Each kayak is equipped with a rudder which can come in handy for beginner’s paddlers, especially in windy situations. It makes tracking and turning much easier. If you don’t need it you can simply take it out of the water and paddle without it!

All kayaks in the Red Adventures fleet are not older over 3 years. We renew our gear regularly and keep them in a good shape.

Sea kayak / canoe rent in Croatia - Hire single touring kayak

Which kayak model to choose?

You choose between single and double touring kayaks depending on your preference and experience. We have various single kayak models available that are usually distributed based on your weight, height and previous experience. If you are an experienced paddler with specific preferences, please let us know, and we will do our best to meet your needs.

Double or single?

For those with a lack of extensive kayaking experience or questionable physical fitness, we strongly recommend double kayak use for comfort and safety. Our double kayak Prijon Poseidon offers outstanding performance while providing great comfort and stability. The reasons for using tandems are: Speed: Length equals speed. Therefore, the longer waterline of a tandem kayak makes it considerably faster than a solo kayak. Stability: The extra width of a tandem kayak provides excellent stability. You’ll appreciate this most in choppy water, and when observing or photographing nature. The greater stability of tandems allows us extra freedom to travel in a greater variety of sea conditions. Support: In case of rough weather conditions, two paddlers are always stronger than one. Two paddlers make a team and always better handle rough weather situations. Also, a double kayak gives a chance for one paddler to take a small break to relax, drink water or take a picture during kayaking.

Sea kayak / canoe rent in Croatia - Hire double touring kayak

Usual gear we are providing for your kayak trip:

– Paddle (TNP aluminum) – Buoyancy aid (Aquarius MQ Pro PFD) – Spray skirt (Prijon polyester) – Dry bags, etc.

Carbon paddle (Prijon Stream) upgrade is available at the price of €5 per day.

What do I need to bring with me for kayaking?

The only thing you need to take with you is swimming wear, water shoes and sun protection (Lycra shirt, cap, sunglasses, sun cream). Kayaking gloves can be helpful too!

How big will the group be? The trip runs with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 8. In exceptional cases, the number can be up to 12 in which case we provide a second guide. We can organize bigger groups in private arrangement only, with up to 30 participants.

How fit do I need to be? The level of kayaking is moderate. Each day involves 4-5 hours of paddling, so we recommend you are in good physical condition. In the case of windy weather, the difficulty level can go up and extend kayaking time. You must be able to swim.

What are the sea conditions there? Island Vis is exposed to all wind, and wave directions, and conditions can sometimes be challenging. However, we take the weather seriously and adjust the itinerary based on wind direction, but make sure you do the whole itinerary. Currents and tides in Croatia are minimal factors.

Is previous kayaking experience necessary? Previous kayaking experience is recommended but not mandatory. A good physical fitness level can substitute lack of experience.

What is the closest airport? Split airport (SPU) is just 20 km away from our base. There are bus and taxi connections to the downtown. You can also consider alternative airports Zadar (ZAD), Dubrovnik (DBV), and even Zagreb (ZAG) from which it takes 3-5 hours to reach Split by bus. Please contact us for more details if you consider alternative airports.

Where do we meet? The meeting point is in Split, Croatia. We recommend coming to Split one day before, as we have a briefing at our office the day before the tour. Also, Split offers a lot to see!

Where do I stay before and after the tour? The tour departs in the morning, so we strongly recommend arriving to Split the day before the tour. The tour finishes in the late afternoon with a ferry transfer to Split, so an extra night in Split would generally be needed. You can consider extending your vacation on Vis if wished so. We can assist you with accommodation arrangements if required.

How do we get to island Vis? We will take a ferry from Split that takes a bit over two hours, the same way back.

What about Bisevo island and Blue cave? We will take a boat excursion to Bisevo island and visit Blue cave, all included in the package. We also do a nice hiking trip on the island.

Do I need to do the entire tour? Most times, you can join the tour halfway or leave the tour earlier. Please contact us with your travel day options, and we will try to fit you in.

Single or double kayak? We strongly recommend double kayaks for beginners for speed, stability, comfort, and safety. Please see the equipment info for more details on this. Consult our team for recommendations.

What should I pack? We recommend bringing your swimsuit, long sleeve Lycra shirt, water shoes, towel, plenty of sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunblock). We recommend taking a book for your time off. Recommended clothes depend on the season, however, we recommend taking a long sleeve even during the summer in case of a chilly night. Bring your running/hiking shoes too. Please bring your own reusable water bottle for a water refill. We will provide you with a suggested packing list to help you. Keep in mind to pack light because of limited space in the kayak.

What about the internet and battery recharge? Your accommodation will have a Wi-Fi connection and electricity. The electricity socket standard in Croatia is European, types C, E, and F.

What is the weather like? The Mediterranean climate here provides a lot of sun and pleasant temperatures. From May to October, the air temperature ranges from 20 to 32 degrees Celsius, while during July and August it often exceeds that number. Sea temperature usually exceeds 20 degrees in early June and reaches 26 degrees in July. During this period, it is mostly sunny, and it rarely rains.

What about payments there? Kuna is the official currency in Croatia. You will use your credit card most of the time (restaurants, shops, and supermarkets). However, we recommend having some cash with you too. ATMs are available on the island.

Are there shops, bars, and restaurants available? Komiza offers many restaurants and bars, a couple of supermarkets and a bakery too. Souvenir shops are available too.

Can we accommodate my special dietary restrictions? Absolutely, upon reservation, you will receive a questionnaire through which we receive your dietary restrictions and preferences.

What about water? Tap water is absolutely fine to drink here. During the kayaking, our guide will have water for re-fill. We encourage you to bring your reusable water bottle for environmental reasons.

Kayaking in European River

Kayaking Europe: The Ultimate Destination Guide

December 20, 2022 14 min read

Kayaking in Europe

Kayaking in Europe Destination

Aside from the hundreds of historical landmarks, Europe is also home to picturesque waterways that are perfect for kayaking .

If you’ve been dreaming about kayaking through the diverse continent of Europe, then there is no better time than the present to hit the waters paddling. In this article, we’ve put together a list of some of Europe’s top kayaking destinations that you choose to visit over time, or all at once for the ultimate and most epic kayaking tour ever.

Table of Contents

Netherlands

Switzerland, united kingdom, interactive map.

Lake Komani with the Albanian fjords

Albania probably isn’t the top country that springs to mind when you’re considering European kayaking destinations, but you’ll be surprised to know that the country is actually home to 247 natural lakes, more than 800 artificial lakes, 8 large major rivers, and nearly 450 km of coastline.

The Vjosa River, in particular, which flows through southwestern Albania, is one of Europe’s last surviving wild whitewater rivers. The class II and class III waters are untamed, free flowing, and surrounded by canyons, islands, and riverbeds. We only recommend paddling down the river if you’re experienced, and if you’re unsure whether your paddling skills are up to par, then head over to Whitewater Rapids Classification System to learn more.

If you’re after a more peaceful and predictable paddling experience, then Lake Koman , a reservoir off the Drin River, has turquoise waters that are encompassed by densely forested hills, deep gorges, and valleys which, of course, are best explored by kayak .

Where to kayak in Croatia

Croatia is a popular tourist destination in Europe that is best known for its picturesque beaches, but what you probably didn’t know is that the country has over 1000 islands, many of which are uninhabited. The Elaphiti Islands  on the Adriatic Coast are some of Croatia’s best, and the water that surrounds them is a beautiful shade of blue that deserves its right to be on a postcard.

If you’re slightly more experienced when it comes to paddling and you’re after a more thrilling adventure, then you’ll want to head to the Zrmanja River,  which depending on the water levels and the season boasts whitewater ranging from class I to class III. The 69 km river cuts its way through magnificent canyons, limestone waterfalls, and tremendously wide valleys, which all in all give you the ultimate whitewater paddling experience.

Other kayaking destinations in Croatia:

  • Mreznica River
  • Cetina River
  • Dobra River

Where to kayak in France

The first thing you think of when you think of France is more than likely the Eiffel Tower. And after that, The Louvre, the Palace Of Versailles, the Notre Dame, and possibly even wine. Although all these historical landmarks (and wine) are fantastic and a must-do on your trip, you’ll be thrilled to know that France also has some extraordinary waterways in both the northern and southern parts of the country.

Normandy is one of the best kayaking destinations in France as there are numerous rivers and stretches of coastline with a plethora of history and diverse scenery. We highly suggest paddling through The Suisse Normande , which flows through the Orne Valley, kayaking on the waters at Granville , which possesses stunning views of the Bay of the Mont Saint-Michel, and taking in the maritime history from your ‘yak in Cherbourg .

In France’s southern region lies the Ardeche River, which winds its way through gorges and a huge natural stone bridge, the Pont d'Arc. Many people refer to the Ardeche Gorge as the “Grand Canyon of Europe,” and thanks to its incredible scenery and various possibilities for outdoor activities, we will have to agree with them.

The Southern French Alps,  slightly north of Ardeche, is another must-paddle location for whitewater paddlers. The Durance , the Bachelard , and the Ubaye  rivers deserve a special mention, with waters ranging from a manageable class II to an extreme class V.

And finally, Brittany's Coastline,  with its sandy beaches , its rocky coves, and its jagged, towering rock formations, is the ideal spot for a day of sea kayaking in France’s northern region.

Other kayaking destinations in France:

  • Loire Valley
  • Verdon Gorge
  • The Serre Poncon Lake

Where to kayak in Greece

So, you’ve spent the week strolling through Greece’s cobblestone streets, taking in the iconic white buildings in Santorini, the ancient history in Athens, and the country's tallest mountain, Mount Olympus, but now it is time to hit the water and appreciate the country from a different perspective.

The first stop on your Greek kayaking trip should be the island of Skopelos.  Not only do you get to paddle in the crystal clear waters that surround the island, but you’ll also get to live out your Mamma Mia dreams as the island just so happened to be one of the movie’s filming locations. You’ll even be able to see the church in which the wedding scenes were filmed.

And as we stay on the topic of islands, you should also head to the island of Cephalonia, which is situated off Greece’s west coast. Cephalonia is also surrounded by stunning blue calm waters, white sandy beaches, and an abundance of marine life such as turtles, seals, and dolphins. Crete , off of Greece’s southern coast, is another mentionable kayaking location as it’s popular with holidaymakers and has that beautiful blue Mediterranean waters that paddlers dream of.

If sea kayaking isn’t your thing, then Greece also has crystal blue lakes that are just as beautiful as the country’s stretches of coastlines. Kremaston Lake , Plastira Lake , and Lake Vistonida are some of our favorites.

Other kayaking destinations in Greece:

  • Milos island

Where to kayak in Iceland

The Nordic island of Iceland is famous for its rugged scenery and landscapes, which in our opinion, is what makes it one of Europe’s top kayaking destinations. Not only could you possibly get the chance to paddle beneath the northern lights, but you could also experience some of the most epic sunsets and sunrises that this planet has to offer.

In the Westfjords region of Iceland, you’ll find tranquil but slightly chilly waters in the large ford of Ísafjarðardjúp. While paddling in Ísafjarðardjúp, you may even get lucky enough and spot whales or seals that frequent the waters year-round.

Moving east into Iceland's mainland is the Hvítá River,  which is a whitewater paddler's paradise. The glacier river is one of Iceland's most popular rafting and kayaking destinations, and it is also home to the most famous waterfall in the country, the Gullfoss Waterfall. You can take a kayak tour down the river or brave it on your own. But, if you do brave it on your own, ensure you have adequate kayaking equipment , as although there aren’t many challenging rapids, the waters are still categorized as class II.

As Iceland is home to numerous astonishing glaciers, it is only right that you wrap up warm and paddle amongst them. Solheimajokull Glacier Lagoon ,  Heinaberg Glacier Lagoon , Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon  are some of the best destinations that combine kayaking with glacial exploration.

Other kayaking destinations in Iceland:

  • Vatnajökull National Park
  • Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Where to kayak in Italy

What better way to burn off all that Italian pizza, pasta, and gelato you’ve consumed than hitting the water and paddling a kayak? Did you know that kayaking burns roughly 475 calories an hour? Well, if you didn’t, you do now, and you don’t need to feel guilty about indulging because the European country of Italy gives you both delicious food and irresistible paddling locations.

One of the top waterways for a kayaking adventure is the Porto Conte Regional Park, which is equipped with stunning emerald waters, hiking trails, and beautiful stretches of beaches that are ideal for kayak launching.

Lake Garda in Northern Italy is very well-known for its crystal clear waters, and if these waters and the fact that Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake weren’t inviting enough, then the lake also has a fortress at its southern end which you can paddle around and explore from the comfort of your kayak .

If you’re an experienced paddler visiting Italy, then you need to check out the Noce River . The river, which is fed by melting alpine glaciers, has even been classed as one of the world’s best rivers for river sports by National Geographic .

And staying in northern Italy, we couldn’t forget to include Lake Como, which is the country's third largest lake known for its dramatic scenery and its Renaissance architecture.

Other kayaking destinations in Italy:

  • Lake Maggiore

Where to kayak in Netherlands

The Netherlands is fairly well known for its windmills, its tulips, and its capital city,  Amsterdam , which is lined with canals and the Amstel River that you can kay a k down. And yes, the canals are fairly spectacular on foot or on a bicycle, but from a kayaker's point of view, they’re even more magnificent.

If, understandably, the crowds in Amsterdam aren’t appealing to you, and you’d prefer to paddle down canals that are on the quieter side, then head to Utrecht ,  Middelburg , or  Giethoorn.  These three destinations are far less crowded but still offer you the unique experience of paddling right through the center of a city.

Now that we’ve covered the canals, we always wanted to mention the  Kleine Acht National Park and the De Biesbosch National Park.  The De Biesbosch National Park just so happens to be one of the Netherlands’ largest national parks, and it is also one of the last extensive areas of freshwater tidal wetlands in the whole of Northwestern Europe.

Other kayaking destinations in the Netherlands:

  • Verhuurbedrijf Hollema
  • Regge River
  • IJssel River

Where to kayak in Norway

Norway is the epicenter of phenomenal fjords, breathtaking skies, and glacial lakes that are just waiting to be explored. One of the most visited kayaking destinations in the country, thanks to its dramatic scenery and the peaks of numerous majestic mountains, is the  Lofoten Islands.  The islands are so beautiful, in fact, that you could literally spend weeks paddling around, taking in all they have to offer.

Sognefjord  is the largest and deepest fjord in the whole of Norway, so it’s no wonder that it’s been nicknamed the King of the Fjords. Depending on the weather conditions, you’ll get to witness the perfect reflection of the mountainous surroundings in the water, as if the fjord was a giant mirror.

And if you want an even more dramatic backdrop, then you’ll want to head to the  Jostadelsbreen Glacier . Standing out between two plain gray mountain faces is the white and blue Jostadelsbreen Glacier, which you can paddle up to in your  kayak  and enjoy in peace from the water.

Other kayaking destinations in Norway:

  • Geirangerfjord
  • Vestfjorden
  • The Helgeland coast

Where to kayak in Portugal

The Atlantic Ocean has greatly influenced the culture of Portugal, and because of it, the Algarve’s beaches to this day are still a major tourist destination for both locals and foreigners. One of the most popular locations is  Lagos which has tourist-friendly beaches, incredible rock formations, and vibrant nightlife if that’s your thing post paddle.

Whether you spent a night out on the town and need a refresh, or if you’re an early riser and are looking to hit the water, the coastline of Lagos is beautiful, and you can paddle through and around the rocks until your heart is content.

If you drive east from Lagos, you’ll come across the  Benagil Cave,  which is one of those crazy geological formations that you must visit with your camera at the ready. You can paddle into the cave, disembark from your kayak , and take in the sheer beauty of the rock formation from the sheltered sand inside.

Further east, Roughly 50 minutes away from Lagos, is Albufeira which again has a beautiful coastline, blue waters, and enticing rock formations that are best explored by kayak or paddle board . Once you’re done in the water you can stroll your way past candy-colored apartments in search of the best seafood the city has to offer.

Other kayaking destinations in Portugal:

Where to kayak in Slovenia

Slovenia is probably another country that you never thought to paddle in, but Slovenia is home to 321 lakes which all have their own unique history, beautiful backdrops, and diverse cultures that shouldn’t be missed.

One of the most popular paddling routes in the country is the  Soca Valley , an alpine river that flows through western Slovenia. The waters in the Soca Valley are the most beautiful shade of blue, and paddling down them will feel like you’re dreaming. Combine the waters with the mountainous backdrop, treelined edges, and incredible rock formations, and you’ve probably got yourself one of the best paddling destinations in the world.

Once you’ve paddled the Soca Valley, you’ll want to make your way to Lake Bled , a glacial lake fed by hot springs. Lake Bled has one of the most incredible viewpoints in the entire country, it is also just as beautiful from the water. You can paddle along, take in the history of the lake’s church-topped islet, and you can witness the medieval castle, which is built on a precipice overlooking the lake.

Following on from Lake Bled, another lake that is definitely worth a visit is Lake Bohinj,  the largest permanent lake in Slovenia. The lake covers 318 hectares and has flat, calm waters that are surrounded by natural beauty and are ideal for even the most  entry-level kayakers .

Other kayaking destinations in Slovenia:

  • Sava Bohinjka River
  • Kolpa River

Where to kayak in Spain

Spain is a popular European holiday destination thanks to its exquisite food, its interesting culture, and of course, the Mediterranean beaches that are perfect for launching a kayak.

Along with beautiful beaches , however, Spain also boasts some interesting reservoirs like the  Mediano Reservoir,  which is surrounded by the Aragonese Pyrenees peaks. Depending on the season you paddle in, the waters are often a beautiful shade of blue, and you can even paddle up to and explore the submerged village of Gerbe.

Off the north coast of the Spanish island of Menorca is  Fornells Bay  which has all the benefits of sandy beaches and sheltered blue waters that are ideal for even beginner paddlers. You should also check out Cala En Porter and Es Garu if you’re holidaying on the island.

And for a slightly different experience, you’ll want to grab your  kayak and paddle over to the Marine Caves in Jávea . Start off from the Granadella Cove and visit the Ambolo Cave, and the Cova del Llop Marí cave, and finish off the estimated 3-hour paddle with the Orguens Cave.

Other kayaking destinations in Spain:

  • Guadalquivir River
  • Cares River
  • Cabo de Gata
  • Mijares river
  • Istan Reservoir

Where to kayak in Sweden

Sweden is one of those European countries that are extremely beautiful in both summer and winter. Many people visit Sweden to catch a glimpse of the northern lights, and although we highly recommend that you do that too, we also suggest packing your kayak because the country is home to some beautiful waterways that you don’t want to miss out on.

Bohuslän  has over 8,000 uninhabited islands and miles upon miles of rugged rocky coastline, making it one of the best and most popular kayaking destinations in Sweden. The waters that surround the islands are often extremely calm, sheltered, and crystal clear, giving you the perfect opportunity to spot wildlife and practice your paddling skills.

If you’re looking to make a weekend trip of your  kayaking adventure, then you’ll want to head to The Saint Anna Archipelago . Saint Anna is comprised of 6000 islands, islets, and reefs with perfect paddling conditions for beginner and experienced paddlers. What’s even better is that if you want to pitch a tent, you totally can, as long as you protect and respect the wildlife around you.

Other kayaking destinations in Sweden:

  • The Torne River
  • Höga Kusten
  • Klarälven River
  • Vänern Lake

Where to kayak in Switzerland

Once you’ve finished experiencing some of Switzerland's best chocolate, it’s time to hit the water and paddle down some of its most incredible waterways. The Giessbach Falls has always been a huge hit with paddling enthusiasts because of its majestic waterfalls, its dramatic cliff faces, and the turquoise watercolor, which is near enough impossible not to want to paddle in. But, if waterfalls aren’t your thing, then you can just choose to paddle on Lake Brienz, which the falls flow into.

Roughly three hours southwest of Lake Brienz is Lake Geneva , with one of Switzerland’s most iconic castles, the Chateau de Chillion. You could honestly spend hours paddling around Lake Geneva, taking in the breathtaking mountain backdrop and the Swiss history that lies amongst its shores.

Other kayaking destinations in Switzerland:

  • Lake Lucerne
  • Lago di Lugano
  • Doubs River

Where to kayak in United Kingdom

And finally, our ultimate European kayaking destination guide is the United Kingdom , with incredible paddling opportunities in all four of its countries. First up is England , and although technically the Isle of Scilly is off the south coast of Cornwall and not on the mainland, it is still a phenomenal paddling location with white sand beaches and beautiful waters that’ll make you feel like you’re somewhere abroad, not just 28 miles from the English coast.

Durdle Door ,  The Lake District , and the River Thames are all other worthy paddling destinations that all have their unique characteristics and appeals.

Moving west to Wales and you have the waters of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, which is famous for its beaches, cliffs, and wildlife spottings of sea otters, sharks, whales, and jellyfish.

The River Wye , Ynys Llanddwyn , and Barafundle Bay are other frequented waterways in Wales by both kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders alike.

One of the most mentionable paddling trails in Scotland is the Great Glen Canoe Trail which is a multi-day route made up of 29 lochs that’ll take you roughly three days to complete. Of course, multi-day trips aren’t for everyone and if you’d prefer to paddle for a morning, an afternoon, or even the day, then check out Stonehaven , Belhaven Bay , Loch Tay , or St Andrews,  which all have ideal paddling conditions and picture-worthy scenery.

Europe is full of incredible waterways that are ideal for kayaking. Some of the best countries and destinations for kayaking in Europe include the following:

  • Albania - Vjosa River and Lake Koman
  • Croatia - Elaphiti Islands and Zrmanja River
  • France - Normandy, Ardeche River, and Brittany’s Coastline
  • Greece - Skopelos, Cephalonia, and Crete
  • Iceland - Ísafjarðardjúp and the Hvítá River
  • Italy - Porto Conte Regional Park, Lake Garda, and the Noce River
  • The Netherlands - Amsterdam and De Biesbosch National Park
  • Norway - Lofoten Islands and Sognefjord
  • Portugal - Lagos, Benagil Cave, and Albufeira
  • Slovenia - Soca Valley, Lake Bled, and Lake Bohinj
  • Spain - Mediano Reservoir, Fornells Bay, and Marine Caves in Jávea
  • Sweden - Bohuslän and The Saint Anna Archipelago
  • Switzerland - Lake Brienz and Lake Geneva
  • United Kingdom - Durdle Door, Pembrokeshire Coast, Stonehaven

The good thing about kayaking in Europe is that you are able to paddle down most waterways without a license, however, it is important that you always check the requirements before heading out.

Waters in Europe also vary from calm flat waters that are perfect for beginners to whitewater that’ll challenge even the most experienced kayakers, so all in all, yes, it is incredibly easy to kayak in Europe.

If you plan on paddling through numerous countries in Europe, then we highly recommend purchasing an  inflatable kayak . Inflatable kayaks are the most transportable type of kayak on the market as they can easily be deflated and packed into a small duffel bag or a backpack.

Most  inflatable kayaks  also weigh under 40 lbs, so even the smallest paddlers traveling solo would be able to manage. Even if you only plan on paddling in one country, the ease, durability, and cost of inflatable kayaks will always put them in our top choices.

As Europe is a continent that goes through four seasons, the weather conditions and the clothes you’ll need to wear kayaking will differ. In summer, for example, you’ll more than likely be perfectly content in a swimming costume (lathered up in sunscreen and finishing off the look with a PFD , of course).

But, in the winter, especially in countries that are closer to the North Pole (Iceland, Sweden, and Norway), you will require wetsuits, drysuits, boots, hats, and many other layers to make paddling even the slightest bit bearable. For a more in-depth explanation of kayak clothing, head over to An Ultimate Guide on What to Wear On Your Next Kayaking Adventure .

If you have a kayak with adequate storage for your camping equipment (we recommend sit-on-top kayaks ), then camping and kayaking are relatively easy.

Whether you prefer to wild camp or camp in designated campgrounds, all you need to do is pack up all your supplies and distribute the weight in your kayak. This includes your tent, your food, your personal belongings, and anything else you’ll need on your camping trip. If you are wild camping, however, you may need more supplies and safety precautions, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re strapped for space.

We have created an entire on How to Go Camping With Your Kayak , so check it out if you’d like more information.

  • Atlantic Sea Kayaking ,  Reen Pier, Unionhall, Co. Cork, Irland

  • Reine Adventure ,  E10 306, 8390 Reine, Norwegen

  • Kayak Lugano ,  Via Rivera, 6982 Agno, Schweiz
  • Reservierungen unter +41 79 223 83 27 oder [email protected]
  • 1 Stunde 20 CHF, 2 Stunden 30 CHF, 3 Stunden 40 CHF

Text: TMTL

Here are the latest prices for a 3 night trip for 2 travelers: Top vacation $526; Family vacation $442; Romantic vacation $591; Luxury vacation $601; Budget vacation $374.

Why should you book a vacation package to Europe?

By booking packages, you can ensure that your itinerary includes your destination's major sights and experiences. Packages are also a great way to cut the cost of visiting Europe. With the right deal, you can combine luxury accommodation, access to the sights and a rental car, and have money left over to shop for souvenirs.

When should you book a vacation package to Europe?

Booking European packages is an excellent way to save money and make travel easy, and you can make even bigger savings by traveling at the right time of year.

In southern Europe, peak season lasts from around June to September, but cheaper shoulder season breaks in May or October can be almost as sunny. In the north, the peak season is shorter, so look for affordable packages in fall and spring. However, expect price spikes around Christmas and local events like Oktoberfest in Munich or Bastille Day in Paris (14 July).

Where should you stay in Europe during your vacation?

For any vacation type in europe:.

The Four Seasons Hotel George V is perfectly located for sightseers in Paris and is an Art Deco gem with gorgeous views of the Eiffel Tower. It's just an hour from Charles de Gaulle Airport, while a meet and greet service is available on request.

Located on the famous "Rambla", Hotel 1898 is one of the finest places to stay in Barcelona. Blessed with amazing city vistas from its terrace, and created from a renovated 19th century mansion, it is 500 meters from the Aerobus stop at Plaza Cataluña.

For family vacations in Europe:

The La Marquise Luxury Resort Complex on the Greek island of Rhodes is a fantastic family hotel with kids' facilities featuring games rooms, pools and multilingual support staff. It's all just 6 miles from Rhodes Airport.

Located on Italy's Amalfi Coast, the Hotel Poseidon in Castellammare has a spacious parking lot on-site, while recreation options like tennis courts make it very appealing for families. It's also an easy drive to and from Naples Airport.

For romantic vacations in Europe:

If you want to see Venice, the Hilton Molino Stucky is ideal. It's conveniently placed for taking gondola cruises and to see the Biennale. Water taxis from the airport arrive a few meters from the hotel door.

Ideal for a romantic break in laid-back Amsterdam, the Rembrandt Square Hotel is right at the city's heart - and next to the spectacular flower market. A taxi from Schiphol Airport takes just 14 minutes.

For luxury vacations in Europe:

London's Ritz Hotel is like a synonym for luxury. Situated on Piccadilly, it offers delicious Indian and Lebanese food, stunning furnishings and couldn't be more convenient for seeing the sights. It's also almost directly connected to Heathrow Airport via the London Tube.

Lisbon's Four Seasons Ritz Hotel is another great choice for a luxury getaway in Europe, with its Louis XVI style design, artworks in every room and relaxing urban gardens. It's just 20 minutes by car from Lisbon Airport.

For budget vacations in Europe:

A great base for exploring Germany's capital, the A&O Berlin Kolumbus is tucked away from the action but only 15 minutes from Alexanderplatz, the city's hub. This means that getting there from the airport is also quick and easy.

Copenhagen's City Hotel Nebo ticks all the boxes for budget breaks in Denmark. It has a central location and is an easy walk away from the capital's galleries and family attractions like Copenhagen Zoo. And it's just 12 minutes away from the airport by train.

Europe Jewel Tour

Europe Jewel

Good route which covered the main attractions of Mid Europe. The trip is compact and efficient and the optional excursions add on the contents. Tour leader Matt is full of knowledge about various area’s history and events, he also looked after the team well and tried to accomodate customers’ needs, A really caring and professional tour leader. Pascal is not only a brilliant driver who tried to park the coach as close as possible for group’s access, he was also taking care of the team in many ways and his warm greetings and kind words won our hearts. If you haven’t or only seen a couple of European countries, this trip will be the one to open your eyes or the one to expend your European experiences. Additionally, the trip is good value for money.

Best of Central Europe Tour

Best of Central Europe

The Central Europe tour I was on with my daughter went beyond my expectations. I was nervous about having all that free time in new places but Eliza our amazing tour guide, gave us the best orientations and knowledge of all the places we visited. Sharing her local knowledge and her mastery of all the languages to help us fully experience and enjoy the countries we were in, made it perfect. The group size was good and she looked after us at every turn, especially on busy train stations and on arrival at new places. She helped us experience the local culture and food in each location, so we had highlights all through the tour. Highly recommend

European Discovery (Summer, Start London, Classic, 12 Days)

The European Magic trip was outstanding. I was looking for something to do on my own (without friends from home) and am so glad I found Contiki. I made a bunch of friends on the trip, everything being organized for us and planned out was epic. The trip manager Rianna was absolutely fantastic. She played so many roles on the trip and was integral in its success.

Baltic Experience Tour

Baltic Experience

First and foremost with these tours, the enjoyment and experiences can be enhanced by the guide you have and our guide for this trip was exceptional! There are a LOT of cobblestones to walk on this tour so sensible footwear is an absolute must. Every city visited had its 'Old City" which were paved with cobblestones. It was a fascinating tour of the history of this part of Europe from medieval times to present day. The days spent canoeing and trekking in the countryside offered a welcome break from the cities visited. Klaipeda and the day trip to the unique, World Heritage-listed Curonian Spit National Park was just one of the highlights of the countryside experience. A hillside of Witches was a unique collection of sculptured tree trunks depicting all manner of mythical witches and demons. Amazing to wander through this huge area with such an engaging local guide to share the stories and history of the area. Hiking and canoe through Aukstaitija National Park's dense forests and lakes provided an opportunity for not only physical activity, but also time to swim and stop to appreciate the wild flowers and other flora. Plants that are considered garden annuals here, grow wild amongst the grasses and forests of this area. But Riga was one of the most beautiful cities visited. Fragrant gardens, fountains, old and new public sculptures and the well preserved and restored art nouveau buildings, made this city enchanting and fascinating. The trip did consist of long journeys especially by bus from Warsaw to Berlin. It proved to be quite exhausting and could be well improved by a stay somewhere in between these two major cities. Overall, if interested in Russian and German occupation and the history of these Baltic countries and their struggle for independence then this is the trip for it.

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals Tour

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

This trip was overall in one word... amazing. The destinations covered were amazing & beautiful. It was handy to have everything sorted out : the accommodation (mix of hostels & hotels), the transportation and many of the activities. Most of the places stayed did not have breakfast, but it was stated clearly that they wouldn't. Some of the places that had breakfast included a selection of breads, cereals and coffee - everything that you need. Croatia blew my mind.. The Croatia part of the tour was very in depth and I have a great idea of what the country is all about now & I also want to go back to see more in the future - The tour goes to cities, lakes, medieval villages, islands, beaches and has stops along the way to each usually. Note that on occasion there are stops along the way & the activity isn't always included in the tour.. I found that out the hard way in Albania. The transportation was a mix of using local transportation, personal buses and ferries. Note that in Albania MOST places do not accept credit card & we had troubles using the bank machines to take out cash.. Albania accepts the Euro as currency so make sure you have lots before you go (I also found out the hard way and didn't have any Euros as i Spent them in Montenegro) The groups for the tour are really what made the trip amazing.. Both groups were super friendly & alot of fun.. being a smaller tour and with the age restrictions it did make for a better trip because we were all around the same age, so had more in common! It was great having a smaller group too because we all became closer & spent even the "free time/Free days" together doing the activities. Our guide Marco was with us for both parts of the tour and overall he did a great job covering the information needed and I felt like we could always go to him if we had questions about anything. That was a part of the tour that I liked: knowing that I had someone to ask questions to who knows the area..Overall, HIGHLY recommend doing BOTH parts of this tour, as Many who didn't do the 2nd leg of the trip were super jealous and wishing they did! You won't regret doing this tour!!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Excellent! Very well organised, extremely interesting and informative. The most famous ancient sites in Greece mixed with lots of cultural activities and a variety of geographical areas. Our tour director, Nikos Kontogiannis, was superb. Nikos has a great sense of humour, is extremely knowledgable and an excellent organiser. We were very impressed!

All About Balkans (4 Star Hotels) Tour

All About Balkans (4 Star Hotels)

This was an amazing trip! Vojin was our tour guide; he was just excellent. Anything you wanted, pharmacy, postcards, restaurant recommendations, even taking pictures, which for me is a must, he was wonderful. I have been traveling for many years, and Vojin was the first tour guide who counted every passenger before we left the city on the bus. I can tell when a tour guide cares about his job and the traveling team, and Vojin goes beyond his comfort to take care of his travel team from Bulgaria to Macedonia. I would also like to mention the bus driver Slavče, was amazing; I am still in shock at how he managed to turn on streets with very little angle, and driving through the mountains of Montenegro and Macedonia was amazing. In most of the Balkans, everything is written in the Latin Alphabet, so it was easier to walk through the cities or restaurants and walk separately. On the trip to Greece, I was with Kostas. He did a great job, taking us to the best locations in Greece. Even a city in Greece where only Greek tourists go, no foreign tourists, was great. There was an excellent view and food. Great picture locations. Unlike the Balkans, in Greece, with the exception of Athens, everything is written in the Greek alphabet, so you need to stay together as a team so you won't get lost. I would recommend the Balkans and Greece for a tour. Besides the great and beautiful views, the wine is excellent in every country!

What people love about Europe Tours

Overall, a well organized trip. Eva is an awesome tour guide. Perhaps more cautions and security should be emphasized especially in Italy as some of our luggage and laptop were stolen when checking in at the hotel.
The tour was awesome. Too bad it was short. Our Tour leader Noddy perform extremely well job organizing and controlling our big group so we was on time everywhere. Our driver Dennis professionalism is off the charts. Especially when we was driving through narrow streets of Italy. I would recommend this tour to others
