Journey: Kolkata to Port Blair 24th – 28th of December, 2015

For adventure lovers, reaching Andaman and Nicobar by passenger ship can definitely be a memorable experience in itself. However one needs to know what type of adventures one can expect.

My photo blog is specially meant for those who are planning to travel to  Andaman by ship !

Boats usually leave twice per month from Kolkata, from Chennai as well as from Vizag. Tickets are available from the respective Shipping office in these harbours and it might be wise to buy these tickets at least two weeks in advance. The distance from Kolkata to Port Blair is 1255 km and with a scheduled duration of 66 hours of sailing, it is the longest of the three possible journeys from the mainland.

I obtained my ticket from Kolkata’s Shipping House (033 22484921/ 22543507) near Fairlie Place on Strand Road. The procedure was quite straight forward and easy, though initially it was difficult to find online information about the schedule, facilities or even the correct phone numbers for getting in touch with the Shipping House. When I finally reached the right contact, though, they were very helpful and able to provide me with all necessary information. Along with the ticket amount in cash, foreigners also need to bring a passport size photograph as well as copies of their visa and passport. Tickets cost anywhere between INR 2000 – 9300 depending on the category (bunk, second class, first class or deluxe class). However, a foreigner on board claimed he tried very hard to get a bunk class ticket but had been denied on the grounds that foreigners are not allowed to go in bunk class. Locals belonging to Andaman and Nicobar as well as government employees get great discounts here and pay only a fraction of this.

Delays both in departure and arrival are the norm. I was in fact asked to call the Shipping House two days before scheduled departure for confirmation; and as it turned out, the ship was indeed delayed by a day. In the end, the whole journey would take more than 100 hours (4 nights) instead of said the 66 hours.

The immigration procedure at Khiddirpur docks was another long and chaotic but interesting process. Almost made me think of how it must have been to travel by passenger ship back in the Titanic days. When the gate finally closed and all passengers and goods were on board, the boat still remained in the harbour – the whole night – until the early morning, when the high tide finally set in. Mobile and cellular data remained functional for about one whole day after departure – and then stopped after the ship left the Hubli river and entered into open sea.

I travelled on MV Nicobar as a solo female traveller thus, was subject to many opinions and concerns about the entire experience. The rather unpleasant stories about hygiene conditions in the bunk class made sure I took the (rather expensive) deluxe cabin. The second bed being empty came as an added bonus. I didn’t regret this choice of the deluxe cabin. As a foreigner, you will probably be a very rare sight and the most interesting attraction on board. Expect getting stared at constantly or even being followed wherever you go. Thanks to this, I was very thankful for my own quiet, private space.

The deluxe class cabin has two beds, an old TV, an older refrigerator, a wooden table, chairs and storage space as well as an attached bathroom. First class cabins contain four beds, a table, lockers and an attached bathroom. 2nd class cabins have six beds, with shared toilets and showers in the corridor. Bunk class beds are below sea level in one big area, separated by occasional walls. They have common toilets and showers that tend to get blocked, congested and overflow throughout the journey, and it seems there is barely any ventilation.

The ship I came on, MV Nicobar, was built in 1991 in Szeczin, Poland, but looked far older than its actual age. Despite the fancy retro dance floor in the deluxe dining area on board, no alcohol is served, no music is played and no dancing takes place. This actually seems like a rather sensible decision – considering the rather poor state of the boat as well as its enthusiastic (mostly male) passengers, and other safety concerns. In fact, not much entertainment can be expected at all, though exploring all nooks and corners of the boat was quite a thrill in itself and kept me busy for at least one whole day. I was even lucky enough to find good company and make a few friends during the journey.

There is a cinema in the bunk class area which is always full, with a small shop selling cold drinks and snacks next to it. On the sun deck, apart from an empty swimming pool, there is a small shop selling snacks, chai and coffee and other cold drinks. A big crowd of young boys hung around here most of the time, and once in a while there was even loud music.

It is definitely advisable to bring your own food for the trip (especially fresh fruits), more so if you are selective about quality and hygiene. Restaurants on board are divided into deluxe class, first and second class, and bunk class. Coupons can be bought in advance or before every meal (INR 80-100 per meal, veg and non-veg). Breakfast consists of simple puris and curry, lunch is rice and daal (lentils) with vegetables and dinner is very much like lunch, but if you are lucky there will be chapatis too. And although I didn’t fancy eating all three meals here, the food on board was actually not as bad as I expected and kept me alive and in good health through the four days.

The staff on MV Nicobar was extremely friendly, helpful and competent. They found efficient solutions to all kinds of problems like broken cabin keys, falling lamps and leaky taps , or cabins being flooded with water from the ceiling above, resulting in power short cuts.

Needless to say, this ship journey has great potential to being a lot more popular as a choice of transport. But for me, these four days on the boat have definitely become a precious and adventurous memory – I wouldn’t want to miss any of it as part of my whole Andaman and Nicobar experience. In terms of luxury and relaxation, this way of travelling might not live up to everyone’s standards especially if you choose the second or bunk classes. However, if you love adventure and if you enjoy travelling the old school way, surrounded only by ocean, sun, moon and stars for days together, then this will be one to experience. If you are a group of friends or family sharing a first or second class cabin, don’t think twice.

Andaman Tour Packages from Kolkata and Trip Planning

Day 0: kolkata.

The journey begins as you leave your home in Kolkata. We can arrange a cab from your home to the Airport, so you can easily reach it in time. In case you life in other parts of West Bengal, we will book a hotel near the airport if required, so you can easily board the flight in the morning.

DAY 1: Port Blair

The journey begins as you arrive at the airport.

DAY 2: Havelock Island

Stretch up and get ready, today we leave for the best destination in the Isles, the Havelock Island.

Our team will help you depart from Port Blair to the Havelock Island through a ferry, enjoy the open sea for a while, and reach the Havelock jetty where our representative will attend to you and will drop you at your beachside resort, so you can rest for a while and feel the Andaman vibe.

Later, the same day, we will begin our journey to the Radha Nagar Beach which is highly praised as one of Asia’s Best Beaches. Indulge yourself in the white sand shores; enjoy different shades of blue or take a dip in the turquoise water, this spot allows for the best photographs in the Andaman.

DAY 5: Ross Island and Wandoor Beach Trip

Time to see the Paris of the past.

Today we start at the Water Sports Complex, from where you will board the ferry to Ross Island.

This Island was the first administrative settlement and you can find old ruins of exquisite British luxury here. The Island has a Deer Sanctuary and you can also witness Peacocks and Peahens here, well, time to take the camera out.

Shortly after this, we will take a boat from Ross to Port Blair, and after freshening up, we will leave for an offbeat trip to the Wandoor Beach.

Surrounded by tall trees and a wide shoreline this beach comes under the forest reserve and is one of the top attractions in Port Blair. Enjoy the complete evening here and buy gifts and handicrafts from the shops near the beach.

• Bharatpur Beach- This beach is great and should be visited for simple sightseeing and some water sports.
• Laxmanpur Beach- This is the best beach in this place, filled with deep sands and has a triangular shape with furious waters, perfect for sightseeing and relaxation.
• Sitapur Beach- This is located on the other side of the island, and is a good place to be after you have explored the rest.

North Bay has the most number of water sports in a single place, and is a great place to be if you're planning for water sports in the isles. Although there are no specific attraction here for exploration, the place can be added to your tour, if you are not visiting Elephant Beach in Havelock. This place can be reached via a boat and usually a trip to Ross Island is also included, as half a day is enough to cover this island.

Ross Island:

This island is great for exploration, and has a wide variety of ruins surrounded by forest canopies, perfect for a history trip. The island has a lot to offer in terms of variety and you can explore the old British ruins, visit the deer sanctuary, and attend the light and sound show which demonstrates why Ross was chosen as the administrative area for British rule in Andaman.

For traveling to different islands in Andaman, you will have 2 options. Either select the Govt. ferry or go with a cruise.

Most of the travelers visiting Andaman, opt for cruises because they are fast and reliable, plus getting tickets for them is easy. If you are planning for a Govt. ferry, you will either have to find someone in the islands to get the tickets for you or you will have to book them when you come here from Kolkata, as there is no system for online booking. Moreover, the tickets sell out really fast because it is used by islanders.

Flight: Flights are the best way to reach Port Blair from West Bengal and all packages can include your airfare on request. The flight leaves from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, and covers 1,307 Km in 2 Hours 10 Minutes. All flights are direct and therefore no stoppages are made during your journey. ‍

When we meet travelers in trade shows or in other travel events. Most of them have a question asking, can we go on a cruise to Andaman Island? Do you book cruise tickets to Andaman islands from Chennai or Kolkata?

I have been waiting to write this article and here is the first time I bring it forward to our readers so that they get a better understanding of ship to the Andaman Islands.

So, let’s answer the following questions to find out how feasible Andaman travel through sea route (Chennai, Kolkata, and Vizag) is:

• Why do many tourists ask for travel by sea route?
• Is the journey to Andaman really a cruise? As we see in most images online.
• Will it include all the luxuries and comfort a royal ship offers?
• Is the budget of the journey reasonable or it will burn a hole in your pocket?
• Is traveling by sea route a safe and smart option?
• Why should people avoid it?
• How much should be the budget of a traveler if opting for the sea route?

If these are the questions in your mind and you are confused whether to opt for a flight or ship then read on.

We will debunk certain misconceptions that are doing the round related to cruise to the Andaman Islands that needs to be put to rest now.

First, let’s shed some light on the popular misconceptions:

Journey to the pristine islands.

The Andaman Islands are surrounded by a vast stretch of water from all sides and this is the reason that natives have to import most of the utilities from the mainland.

But to be clear these ships have different categories of rooms available and the comfort depends on your budget and health condition. Most of the categories are available on sharing basis which is a big No for most of the travelers.

The rooms can be dirty and stinking so think before opting for a sea expedition. There are options for a dormitory in the ship, 6 Sharing cabins are present, 4 Sharing cabins are present and 2 Sharing cabins are also present in the trip. It depends upon which of the class you wish to opt during your travel to the islands.

How expensive is the Journey?

This is one of the main reasons why people opt for sea route despite the fact that it is time-consuming. Honestly, it takes around 4 Days if you are coming in a ship to Andaman.

Yes, there can be a difference in the expenses of a flight and sea. However, if you are opting for a double sharing rather than a dormitory there are chances that ticket cost of traveling via a flight and cruise will be same.

Also, when you pay for the flight, the meal may or may not be complimentary but in case of the sea travel, food charges are extra. This implies if you are traveling via a cruise, you are likely to pay for 9 meals(3 days travel). The bottom line is that the cruise journey is fairly expensive.

When does the booking open for Ship to Andaman?

Cruise has limited seats and the tickets are made available only before 15 days of travel. This implies you are at a risk because there can be chances that you do not get tickets and it can ruin your travel plan.

So its a little tricky to get this booked, and it works in a very old-fashioned as it was earlier. No online booking. Booking of these cruises can be done only through the counters or through travel companies.

Honestly, I think its mainly the experience that people are looking into that brings so many people wanting to take a ship/cruise to the Andaman Islands. For once in a lifetime experience, you can consider a ship journey off course, however, it comes with its own baggage as mentioned above.

Traveling on these cruises has its own constraints :

An unexpected change in weather.

Sailing on the ship depends on the weather conditions and the ship can be delayed if the weather forecast says there will be rain or rough weather out there.

If you have planned to travel via Kolkata or Chennai but for some reason, the journey gets delayed then you have to find a place to stay which is an added expense. It could take a week or so to clear the weather conditions which could hamper your plans and lead to cancellation of hotel booking if you have booked everything in advance.

Time-consuming

Travelling from Kolkata, Chennai or Vizag usually takes 3-4 days to reach Andaman, if there is no halt in between or the ship is not delayed. Adding to this will be a day taken to reach from your city to the ports.

In comparison to it, air travel takes just a few hours and is more comfortable than ships; whose time period is awfully long. For people who are working in the corporate sectors have limited number of days to explore the new place; in such situations, sea journey is not the preferred medium.

Accommodation on the ship

There are four different categories of room available on the ship and depending on your budget you can choose the rooms.

Sharing room for six

Sharing for four, twin room sharing, ticket availability.

So, depending on the availability of the seat; bookings open 15 days before the departure and you can book your class of seat if it comes in your budget. There is no criterion for advance bookings in lieu of getting discounts.

Pros of Travelling on the ship to the islands:

New experience.

If you are a person who craves to try out new experiences and has never traveled on the ship before then this can be your chance. Some people love to accumulate experiences and sea travel is enriching and peaceful.

If you are traveling with family then children will love this voyage as they get to see aquatic life, enjoy on the deck and gaze at the stars at night.

My Experience

Finally i completed my Andaman tour, me and my hubby enjoyed well and it was really memorable trip. Elephant beach trekking, scuba diving lots of fun. Here i will give Feedback for Ship journey to Andaman.., First of all it is a passenger ship not a cruise, so do not expect more, it takes 3 days to reach Port Blair and the entire journey you will be far away from social media i mean to say no internet and mobile network as well. You could spend good time with your family/friends with whom you travel. I was seeking for information before start my travel but I came with lots of doubt and now I have collected some info from Ship crew during my Trip.

On the next day of sailing you could not find a piece of land your ship will be surrounded by sea for next 2 Days and that was the greatest experience I ever had in my life that was totally cool and awesome I passed my half of the time by sitting on deck and enjoy Sunset and sunrise. I was luckily found dolphin during my last day trip.

Avoid Ship journey if you have sea/travel sickness but during my travel time weather was calm so I did not face any sickness might be m lucky.

Avoid travel during bad weather.

I prefer deluxe class because I was travelling with my hubby so it has 2 person capacities only and I suggest you to take deluxe or First class cabin (If you are travelling with family it has 4 bedded).

Bunk class was not good to travel for 3/4 days It has common toilet and not very well maintained and Second class rooms are good but toilets are common and not well maintained.

Deluxe and First class cabin you will get better food as compare to Bunk classes

At last I must say one should experience this fascinating trip once in life
