The 6 best statue of liberty cruises + tips from a local.
Complete your New York City experience with an exhilarating boat trip.
The Best Statue of Liberty Cruises
Courtesy of Statue City Cruises
Enjoy the sea air while you take in stunning New York City views.
The best view of New York might not be in the city itself, but from the harbor looking back at the skyline. Sightseeing cruises are a wonderful reminder that Manhattan is, in fact, an island, and getting out on the water offers a breezy cruise in addition to a fresh vantage point.
With a cold drink in hand, you'll see not just the Statue of Liberty , but also other top city landmarks from the Brooklyn Bridge to One World Trade Center. These boat tours allow visitors to zoom out and get a new perspective, then return to Manhattan refreshed by the wind, water, light and sheer size of the skyline.
There are different boat experiences to match every type of traveler, and here are some of the best.
Best Overall: Statue City Cruises
Price: From $24.50
Duration: At your own pace, with ferries departing every 25 to 30 minutes
Standout perk: Admission to the grounds of Liberty Island and Ellis Island are included in this sightseeing cruise and ferry service to Lady Liberty.
The best overall value and experience belongs to Statue City Cruises, which combines the scenery of a sightseeing cruise with the in-depth experience of an attraction tour. Priority entry included with the ticket saves time at the departure point at The Battery . On board the round-trip ferry service, visitors will experience all the sweeping views of a New York Harbor cruise, including skyscrapers of the Financial District and beyond.
The first stop is Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. Audio tours in a dozen languages are available so you can go at your own pace. Those interested can continue via boat service to Ellis Island, home to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, which contains several fascinating exhibits and the chance to look up your ancestors. Explore at your leisure, then utilize the ferry service back to lower Manhattan.
Local tip: Choose a time as early as possible in the morning for this experience. Ferry service and crowds at Lady Liberty grow throughout the day and swell on weekends; a weekday morning is the best choice.
Best for Adults: Manhattan by Sail's Day Sail – Shearwater
Price: From $60 for adults
Duration: 90 minutes
Standout perk: This cruise provides a true sailing experience on a classic schooner.
Don't be surprised to bump into New Yorkers on the Shearwater, a schooner with tall sails that entices even jaded Manhattanites to go for a ride. Climb aboard this "Gatsby"-era boat, with capacity for 48 people, from the dock at North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place and set out on a sail down the Hudson River and into the New York Harbor. Trade city crowds for the open water with this cruise, complete with a cash bar, that offers up-close views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan skyline.
This experience, conveniently available at different times throughout the day, is a match for adults seeking a more sophisticated sail – think: hip vibe, ample bar, music and an emphasis on service. Several upgrades are available, including sails that offer a wine tasting or live jazz on board. Every sailing offers the chance to snap your photograph with Lady Liberty herself, though you won't be disembarking at Liberty Island.
Local tip: Adults seeking a romantic cruise may want to opt for the Sunset Sail on the Shearwater Classic Schooner.
Best for Families: Circle Line's Liberty Super Express Downtown
Courtesy of Circle Line
Price: From $29
Duration: 50 minutes
Standout perk: Maximize time with this express cruise, featuring convenient, regular departures.
Families with limited time (or kids with limited attention spans) may appreciate a quick express cruise option. This fast and friendly tour, at just 50 minutes, is a speedy way to get the experience of a boat cruise without it taking a bite out of your day. Hop aboard a boat with Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises – the sister company to New York Water Taxi – and choose between either the open air of the top deck or the temperature-controlled cabin. On a sunny day, the outdoor deck with its sea breeze is the place to be as the boat sails past the Statue of Liberty.
Get unobstructed views of Lady Liberty and snap some family photographs before returning to Pier 16 in the South Street Seaport. Quick, efficient and featuring live narration from a guide, this sightseeing ride is excellent value packed into a short time span.
Local tip: Kids interested in ships may want to visit the South Street Seaport Museum, near the cruise departure point, to see model ships and more.

Best Budget: Staten Island Ferry
Courtesy of SIFerry.com
Price: Free
Duration: 25 minutes each way
Standout perk: Get out on the water to see the Statue of Liberty without paying a cent.
The best budget sightseeing cruise isn't a cruise at all, but rather a free mode of local transportation: the Staten Island Ferry. While many of even the most basic harbor cruises start at about $20, this ferry offers a completely free, ticketless cruise in the New York Harbor, bypassing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island along the way. With service every 30 minutes and no reservations or tickets required, the ferry is not only a steal price-wise, but also a convenient option for travelers who don't want to be tied down to a ticketed departure time.
Stand out on deck and admire views of Lady Liberty during this journey that crosses about 5 miles from Whitehall Street at the tip of lower Manhattan to St. George on Staten Island. The only drawback is that you must depart the ferry in Staten Island and reboard for the trip back to Manhattan – a small "price" to pay for a free boat ride in NYC.
Local tip: Visitors will want to avoid rush hour; these commuter boats can be crowded. Choose a time outside commuting rush hour to maximize the peaceful experience.
Best Luxury: Classic Harbor Line's Statue and Skyline Sightseeing Cruise
Courtesy of Classic Harbor Line
Price: From $64 for adults
Duration: 1.5 hours
Standout perk: This intimate cruise on a 1920s-inspired yacht comes with one complimentary drink included.
Board a yacht at Pier 62 in Chelsea for a polished cruise including views of the New York Harbor's top landmark: the Statue of Liberty. Set sail in style aboard a yacht inspired by the roaring '20s, complete with a solarium and open-air decks as well as a climate-controlled cabin. Cruise down the west side of Manhattan and check out views of The Battery, the Financial District, Governor's Island and more.
Of all the available New York City harbor cruises, guests often praise this one for the quality of the staff running the Classic Harbor Line cruises. With an emphasis on service, an intimate group with a maximum of 80 passengers and an onboard stocked bar, this cruise offers a sophisticated option for seeing Lady Liberty.
Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 62, which is home to a riverfront carousel for kids and a pretty stretch of Hudson River Park. Stop into Chelsea Market for some picnic supplies and relax in the park before your cruise.
Best Sunset Cruise: Circle Line's Harbor Lights
Price: From $45
Duration: 2 hours
Standout perk: Watch the skyscrapers of the Manhattan skyline flicker to life.
Circle Line offers a variety of cruises with different itineraries. One of the most popular is the Harbor Lights tour, a cruise departing from Midtown Manhattan that includes golden sunset views and a photo stop at the Statue of Liberty. See NYC landmarks like Hudson Yards, Chelsea Piers and One World Trade Center before cruising out into the New York Harbor. You'll get to learn about New York from onboard narration as the itinerary continues past Liberty Island and beneath the Brooklyn Bridge.
While the sun sets and the Manhattan skyscrapers flash to life, relax on the outdoor deck space and visit the onboard bar to purchase beer, wine, cocktails and light snacks. A temperature-controlled cabin is available for hot days. Wi-Fi is free on board and allows for easy posting of sunset photos.
Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 83 in Midtown Manhattan. Arrive early to visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at neighboring Pier 86.

The 12 Best Statue of Liberty Cruises
There are multiple ways for you to see the Statue of Liberty in New York. Our personal favorite is seeing the Statue of Liberty from the water! That’s why, in this article, we’d like to present the 12 best Statue of Liberty Cruises.

Our Favorite Statue of Liberty Cruises
First of all, let us reiterate that the only way to set foot on Liberty Island is by taking the ferry. This can be done with an appropriate ticket or within a guided tour. Any other Statue of Liberty Cruise will be cruising around the Statue of Liberty . They may make a stop on the water, but they do not stop at the island . For us, however, cruises around the Statue of Liberty are the perfect way of combining panoramic scenes of Manhattan’s skyline with a close view of the Statue of Liberty. If you do want to visit the island, be sure to be informed about all the different ticket types in advance.
There are also a bunch of private tours that are offered to explore the Statue of Liberty. Even though the reviews are excellent, we do not believe a private tour is necessary. A guided tour in a small group is just as good and much more affordable.
Should you want to climb all the way to the top, into the crown of the Statue of Liberty , you would need a different ticket. Those tickets are limited and sell out many weeks in advance, so be sure to secure your tickets.
Details about each Statue of Liberty Cruise

On the way there you can also clearly see the new highest building in the evening skyline: the One World Trade Center.
Circle Line - Harbor Lights Night Cruise

Classic Harbor Line: Architecture Yacht Cruise
The architecture boat tour takes you around Manhattan in 2.5 hours. On a 30 meter long wooden ship in the style of the 1920s you can relax and learn a lot of interesting facts about the many small and large buildings of the city. Circle Line - Best of NYC Cruise
The Best of NYC Cruise takes you once around the whole island of Manhattan. This is a great way to explore the city from the water and see more than 25 of the top sights NYC has to offer. Classic Harbor Line: Sailboat Day Cruise to the Statue of Liberty
By far the best way to admire New York City’s iconic skyline is from the water. With this day cruise along the Hudson River, you can take in the most recognized cityscape in the world while relaxing on board the elegant Adirondack schooner. Sip complimentary wine, beer, and Champagne while looking out over iconic sights like the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and Battery Park.

The ONLY Way to Liberty Island
Caveat emptor.
Traveling can be unforgettable, but not always in a good way. Circumstances can leave you frustrated, disappointed, or even cheated out of time, money, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation does not want this to happen to you! Read on to ensure a successful trip to Liberty and Ellis Islands!
Don't Get Fooled, Again
Unfortunately, every year visitors from around the world – and around the corner, because locals aren’t immune to ticket scammers – are cheated out of visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Sales for other attractions may be misleading, sending people to ferries that only sail around the Hudson River, never reaching the actual monuments. In some cases, the experience begins and ends with a bus ride from Manhattan to New Jersey, adding hours to the failed adventure.
Just ask Alec Baldwin ! And read on…

Liberty cruise past Aces in 2023 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup: How New York did it
The New York Liberty took down the Las Vegas Aces 82-63 in the WNBA’s third annual Commissioner’s Cup at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:
- Liberty forward Jonquel Jones was named MVP after contributing 16 points and 15 rebounds.
- Marine Johannes led the Liberty with 17 points while Jackie Young was the Aces ’ leading scorer with 16 points.
- The season series between these teams is tied 1-1. The Liberty recently trounced the Aces in the second meeting of the regular season, winning 99-61 on Aug. 6.
The Athletic ’s instant analysis:
Liberty flex their bench advantage
The Aces overwhelm most teams with the strength of their starting lineup, which boasts four multi-time All-Stars. However, the Liberty can match that firepower in their first five, and they had the edge on Las Vegas by being able to bring meaningful offensive production off the bench.
While Alysha Clark and Kierstan Bell combined for four points for the Aces, New York got 25 points out of Johannes and Kayla Thornton , including a pair of Thornton 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter that pushed the lead to eight. The Aces never got closer than that for the rest of the game. — Merchant
Aces still can’t score on the Liberty
After putting together a ghastly 17-point second half in Brooklyn when the two teams met last week, Las Vegas had three more quarters of 15 or fewer points in the Commissioner’s Cup final. New York’s switching kept the Aces out of the paint, and the home team couldn’t make the Liberty pay with jumpers, finishing 5-of-26 from distance.
The saving grace for Las Vegas in the first half was an ability to get to the line, but New York stayed disciplined in the second, limiting the Aces to only two free-throw attempts after the break. — Merchant
Are Aces suddenly dealing with doubt after loss to Liberty in Commissioner's Cup?
Las Vegas needs Candace Parker back
The Aces were a deserving champion last season, but the addition that pushed them over the edge, the player who made them a “super team,” was Candace Parker, a two-time MVP who raised their offensive and defensive ceilings to new heights.
Without Parker in the lineup, the Aces seem to playing 4-on-5 on offense for long stretches and have seen significant slippage on the glass. New York outrebounded Las Vegas 49-28 after doubling up the Aces in the team’s previous meeting. — Merchant
What does the winning team receive?
Liberty players get $30,000 each while Aces players get $10,000 apiece. The WNBA will also donate $10,000 to the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, the Liberty’s chosen non-profit. The Aces’ chosen organization, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will receive $5,000.
The in-season competition included 60 regular-season games featuring all 12 teams to determine which two would meet in the championship game. New York was the top contender out of the Eastern Conference, going 7-3 in its Cup-designated games. Las Vegas finished 9-1 in its designated games to come out of the Western Conference.
Vegas defeated the Chicago Sky 93-83 to take the Cup last season .

A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.
The 18-story ship was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island when the as-yet-unidentified man jumped off one of the decks.
According to onlookers, his father and brother watched helplessly as he leaped over the side.
Some passengers said it appeared to be an impulsive, spur-of-the-moment decision.
“I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30,” passenger Bryan Sims tells The Post. ” It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.”
“He was pretty drunk,” Sims continues.
“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.” “When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”
“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” another passenger, Deborah Morrison, told The Post.
“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”
“It was insane,” says Sims. “It was just surreal.”
In a statement to The Post, Royal Caribbean said its crew immediately sprang into action following the incident.
“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search,” the statement reads.
“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”
News of the apparent suicide attempt quickly spread among the guests — and many of them tried to help in any way they could.
“The early morning was definitely somber as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” said Amy Phelps Fouse, a passenger on the ship.
“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day,” Fouse continued. “They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”
Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare.
According to the Washington Post , about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.

The incidents, whether accidental or intentional, are often deadly.
In the past few years, most cruise lines have enacted onboard safety measures and surveillance systems to help reduce the risk of overboard deaths.
The Coast Guard confirmed to The Post it is still conducting a search and rescue operation in the waters off Cuba. The man has not yet been found.

Carnival Cruise Line shares a big smoking rule decision
Smoking has become less popular in the U.S., but it has not fallen fully out of favor.
That creates a challenge for cruise lines, as they must accommodate smokers while also taking into account the health and safety of nonsmoking passengers.
Cruise ships are not bound by U.S. laws that prohibit smoking indoors in every place except in select casinos. In addition, cruise passengers can't simply leave the ship to smoke, and they most certainly can't smoke in their cabins.

So if the cruise lines want to attract smokers to sail on their ships, they must designate smoking areas. Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) ships, much like rival Royal Caribbean's ships, designate multiple smoking areas.
Both cruise lines also allow smoking in part of their casinos while also having designated outdoor smoking areas on the pool deck. Smokers generally want more smoking areas while nonsmokers, especially casino players, don't like being exposed to secondhand smoke.
It's challenging for both companies as they want to keep all their passengers happy. In the case of the casino, the answer has been dictated by money. Royal Caribbean has tested banning smoking in its casino multiple times, and it results in lower revenue, so the decision to allow smoking in parts of the casino is clear.
Where to allow smoking outdoors, however, is a bigger question, and Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, recently weighed in on the controversial topic.
Carnival says no to smokers
Carnival has an area on its ships called the Serenity Decks. These are adults-only areas that vary by ship, but they generally have hot tubs, a pool, a bar and plenty of seating for people to enjoy the outdoors away from children,
"Look, you'll still be on the same ship as the kids, the hoopla, and all the Carnival-style excitement ... but you could easily forget because when you’re at Serenity you could not be further from it all," the cruise line says on its website.
"The world you'll find yourself in is one of complete peace, sea breezes, and, of course, a nearby bar. It's the place to get done the kind of stuff you just can't seem to do anywhere else — reconnect with your partner, finish that book, or do absolutely, blissfully, nothing at all."

Currently, you can do a lot of things on the Serenity decks, but you can't smoke. That's something Heald addressed on his Facebook page.
"One thing I will not be able to help with are the changes people requested for the gorgeous Serenity Decks we have on our ships," he said. "Firstly a request to make one side a smoking section. 'P' said 'we live in a free society, and if Carnival’s smokers want to smoke, then that is their right and that includes on Serenity Deck.'”

Heald made clear that that was not going to happen.
"Well, we do indeed live in a free society but we also live in a more non-smoking world than ever before. So while we will continue to provide outdoor smoking areas for as long as possible we will not be allowing smoking on Serenity Deck," he added.
Carnival passengers share their smoking thoughts
Where people can smoke on a cruise ship is a contentious issue, but it's not a simple one, where all smokers want more smoking areas.
"Good morning! I am a smoker but I totally agree with no smoking on the Serenity Deck because just because I smoke not everyone else does. I respect that," posted Angel Goins.
That's not an uncommon feeling even among smokers.
"Thank you for keeping the serenity deck smoke-free. I’m a smoker and find the smoking areas to be quiet, kid-free, and relaxing," Tessa Jones added.
Other smokers would like to see the current rules modified.
"Vaping should be allowed on Serenity and more outside areas. There is no fire, hazardous smoke, or ash," Jeff Henderson wrote.

Many nonsmokers shared their appreciation for Carnival limiting where passengers can smoke.

"People who smoke, unfortunately, do have a right to kill themselves. That being said, they DO NOT have the right to take us with them. That's why I appreciate Carnival keeping them away from me," posted Frances Storey.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
