Perhaps the post that has made you disquiet was just a "one-off" bad experience because something untoward went wrong.

Nonetheless, I am not saying any of this as an expert, and would be fascinated to read the report to which you're referring; can you point us toward it?

My "gut" feeling, before having seen it, however, is to advise you not to worry.

Here's the message that was so negative, along with other comments. Yours made me feel much better.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g298507-i707-k3704630-l26737828-Smartours_Russia_Cruise_MS_Konstantin_Korotkov-St_Petersburg_North_West_Russia.html#26737828

Well, that post was quite a tirade, and I can see why you were worried! It all sounds like a horror story, doesn't it? Now, it's not for me to say that the whole thing is a crock, as I confess I have never even seen the ferry in question, and, as far as I know, I never spoke to any of its passengers en-route. But, reading all those negatives, unleavened by even a single positive (I mean, what about the lovely scenery en-route, the historic buildings, the village people you meet, your fellow-passengers from all over the world, the gorgeous summer weather? didn't anything meet their expectations?), I couldn't help feeling that the writers had an axe to grind. The chamber pots did, indeed, sound dreadful (nothing like that on the 'Russ'), but I think it was a bit strong to decry the fact that the ferry had bunk beds, not doubles.... surely this is standard for ferries like this, and certainly this is what we got on the 'Russ' also. As for the meals... well, was it just that their tummies were sensitive to the food -- hardly surprising and something that you could encounter anywhere.... would they have rather the ship didn't give them an opportunity to sample 'real' Russian food but merely tried to serve them food from home -- or was everyone on the ferry rolling on the floor in pain? (If so, wouldn't the word have got around to the authorities by now?)

The Russian hosts were as nice as one could expect, and the girls -- mostly uni students earning a bit of cash for their summer holidays -- who were assigned to look after our tables were so gorgeous that, on cruise's end, we took photographs and departed as firm friends).

I was interested that the first response to this litany of abuse came from one of the very wisest experts on this forum, Stanj, who has forgotten more about Moscow and St Petersburg than most of us will ever learn. He is, and rightly so, extremely anxious that potential travellers should have the best-possible experience of the country he loves (which is why he posts so often, and so well), and if this ship were, indeed, the pest-hole that our two decriers had described, he would have certainly known about it and joined in the warnings. Yet his reply -- wise, calm, well-considered -- put the whole thing into more-realistic perspective.... read and digest the complaints, by all means, but read his impression of their validity, also.

I really hope that the ship surprises you with how good it is, and I trust that you will have a wonderful week seeing the by-ways of this amazing country. Good luck, and don't fall into the chamber-pot!

Thanks for your upbeat and reasonable take on the whole situation. As a traveler, I welcome differences. If it were the same as home, why not stay home? So, I'm open to having a good time as I experience things I've never experienced. Any bad times just become the stories of the future. So I am still looking very forward to the whole trip.

I'll even post a report on my return.

Thanks for the positive thoughts.

They have alot of boats, I was surprised at how many other Radisson boats we passed the way. Ours was far from full. Don't worry about not getting a spot.

Thank you !
