Luscious Jackson Rekindle the ‘Magic’ After 14 Years Away
Luscious Jackson returns after 14 years with two fan-funded albums on their own label.
By Emily Zemler
Emily Zemler
Following the release of 1999’s “Electric Honey” on Capitol, New York alt-rock group Luscious Jackson called it quits. In the time since, the band members-singer/bassist Jill Cunniff, singer/guitarist Gabby Glaser and drummer Kate Schellenbach-have pursued solo albums and production projects, as well as families. A few years ago, Cunniff and Glaser began collaborating on a children’s album, but nothing came of it, largely due to distribution issues. But last year, the trio learned about new options to fund and distribute music, and the band’s fourth album, “Magic Hour,” is due Nov. 5 on its own City Song imprint, followed by a children’s album on Nov. 19.

“A friend working at [the direct-to-fan platform] PledgeMusic presented it to me and we were like, ‘Wow, this is a whole new world,'” Cunniff says. “So we decided to regroup the band and make new music.”
Trending on Billboard
The PledgeMusic campaign launched Feb. 9, 2012, and offered an array of rewards for fans, including a tour of downtown Manhattan with Cunniff and Glaser for $700 and an acoustic living room concert for $5,000. The campaign kicked off along with a new song, “Are You Ready?,” the first new Luscious Jackson track in more than a decade. The band reached 100% of its funding goal two days later.
The incentive for using PledgeMusic wasn’t just for funding, but also to tap into an online fan base, which is why the campaign continued long after Luscious Jackson reached its funding goal. “When we started, we really had nothing,” Cunniff says. “We went through the process of getting our Facebook page returned to us and that was the beginning of our social media. And that’s an ongoing process. But the nice thing about it is we can potentially do this whole thing now.”
“The foundation is in the nostalgia, but the engagement is what creates the newness of it all,” says Jayce Varden, President of U.S. operations for PledgeMusic. “By showing the real-time ‘this is the making of this album,’ they’re bringing in fans originally based off that nostalgia.”
As the campaign continued-it ended Oct. 1-the band members went into the studio to make the album while putting a business team in place. The disc was produced by Cunniff and Glaser at their Brooklyn studio, and Beastie Boys’ Adam Horovitz collaborated on the track “So Rock On.”
“The album was like a puzzle that just flew together and there was the sound,” Cunniff says. “That’s the main thing with our band. We have a sound and it’s very specific-and that was really exciting, to sort of come from nothing and form this sound again. So more than a vision, it was a reconnection. The coolest part was the continuity was there. I really felt like I get it. I get why we did this, I get why we were a band, and I get why this was so much fun.”
For that reason, Cunniff sees “Magic Hour” as the beginning of something. The group, which has two shows booked in New York and Philadelphia this fall, is confirming TV appearances and West Coast tour dates, and has a number of music videos in the can. The band will also continue to make new music going forward, making this less of a reunion and more of a continuation that was interrupted by the realities of the music industry.
“When we left in the late ’90s, I felt like I was so done with this,” Cunniff says. “And now some 13 years later, and suddenly it’s looking a whole lot better. [It] looks like fun. I couldn’t appreciate [that] at the end because we’d been through such turmoil. It’s tumultuous being on a major label. We had an amazing time and it went as far as we could get it to go. So to come back together was sort of surprising. It’s just the time and perspective have made it refreshed and renewed for us.”

Luscious Jackson is an all girl alternative rock band from Manhattan, New York, US that derived their name from the professional basketball player Luscious Jackson. The band formed in 1991 and has delved into unique genres ranging from indie rock to hip-hop.
Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser were the primary members that formed the band and were the main songwriters for the band. Later they recruited Vivian Trimble on keyboards and Kate Schellenbach on the drums, who previously was performing with the Beastie Boys. The band’s first performance was an opening act for Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill. After Luscious Jackson had recorded a demo the Beastie Boys asked the band to be the first artist to be signed to their label Grand Royal. In 1992 the band released their debut EP “In Search of Manny”, which consisted of songs from their demo as well as new material. The singles from the EP included “Let Yourself Get Down” and “Daughters Of The Kaos”.
In 1994 the band released their first full length album “Natural Ingredients”. The album showcased the band’s distinctive blend of rock and hip-hop. The album also featured the hit songs “Citysong”, “Deep Shag”, and “Here”, which all had music videos featured on MTV. On the band’s 1995 tour Cunniff and Trimble experimented with recording low key, acoustic songs that they released under the name Kostars. The album they released was called “Klassics With A “K” and it featured musicians such as Josephine Wiggs from The Breeders and Dean & Gene from Ween.
In 1996 Luscious Jackson released the album “Fever In Fever Out”, which really helped escalate the band into the attention of the mainstream. The album produced the single “Naked Eye”, which made it in the Top 40. The album was later certified gold and the band would support the album by touring with the Lilith Fair festival. In 1998 the band released a cover song of George Gershwin’s “I’ve Got a Crush on You”, which was for the Red Hot Organization.
Vivian Trimble left the band in 1998 and the group continued as a trio to record the album “Electric Honey”, which was released in 1999. The album contained the single “Lady Fingers” as well as the song “Fantastic Fabulous”, which featured Debbie Harry from Blondie. The band would support their album by opening up for the band Smash Mouth.
After touring for “Electric Honey”, Luscious Jackson decided to take a break from recording and touring. During their time off from Luscious Jackson, Jill Cunniff released her debut solo album “City Beach” and Gabby Glaser released her debut solo album “Gimme Splash”. After a long break the band finally reunited in 2011 and in 2013 they released their first album in 14 years called “Magic Hour”, which produced the single “So Rock On”.
The band has made several appearances on popular television shows such as “Saturday Night Live”, “Viva Variety”, and MTV’s “120 Minutes”. Their music has also been featured on shows and films like “The Adventures of Pete and Pete”, Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Clueless”, and “Good Will Hunting”.
Live reviews
Being able to see Luscious Jackson live in concert was a major deal for me. Being a woman, I loved seeing how a group of female musicians manage to get a large crowd pumped up and keep the party going all night.
From the time the girls came out on stage until they played their final song, Luscious Jackson was mind blowing. Their stage is nothing out of the ordinary. Just your basic stage with all of their instruments strategically placed. It was small, yet big enough to allow the girls to move freely. When they finally came out on stage, it was like the audience went nuts.
The first song they sang was "Naked Eye", which just happened to be my favorite. I was kind of thrown into a trance for the moment and all I could hear was the crowd singing right with them on every lyric.
Luscious Jackson is not only original, but they have the most awesome, free spirits. I've heard some people say they do not like to go see girl bands perform because they think it will no be any fun. Well, I beg to differ. If you get to see any concert in your lifetime, go see Luscious Jackson. They are so genuine and entertaining until the very end. It will definitely be money well spent and a great night out!

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals: atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.
Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final. While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut. Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so. But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.
This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime. Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30). Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date. Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles: Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30. In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans: Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.
For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship. The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize. The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it. Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.
The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth. There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat. Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.
I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games. They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL. They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
- Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
- Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
- Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
- Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
