It includes over 150 locks, a 3-kilometre tunnel, aqueducts, and reservoirs holding millions of tonnes of water. The canals flow through the capital city of Dijon . Taking a self drive cruise along the Canal du Midi France is a unique experience and one I highly recommend. It is the longest and oldest canal in France and is one of the most beautiful waterways in the world. This 240 km long channel passes through picturesque vineyards and medieval villages with ancient fortresses and Chateaus.

You can go at your own pace while exploring the historical attractions along the way. Stop at wineries, and try some wine tasting or even indulge in the many local food products on offer. Making it a great way to give back and support the local communities. For the more adventurous you can ride a bike or take a hike along the towpath of the canal too.  

The Canal du Midi has no shortage of things to see and do. Here are what to expect and some of the highlights of taking a cruise along the Canal du Midi France.

About the Canal du Midi

Canal du Midi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a feat of architectural genius. Perfectly located in the sun-filled South of France, the historical waterway was completed in 1694. Designed by a prominent canal builder, Pierre-Paul Riquet, the channel was built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea for trade purposes.

The engineer’s biggest challenge was lifting boats over the highest point in the canal, Seuil de Naurouze. Thanks to his experience and the labour of 12,000 workers, they built dams and reservoirs to help boats cross over smoothly.

Canal du Midi is popular amongst tourists, this old canal provides one of the best boating holidays in France .

Self-drive cruise along the Canal du Midi with Le Boat

Le Boat offers the best self-driving holidays from Castelnaudary, Homps, Trebes, and Port Cassafieres along the canal du Midi. The boats vary from affordable to premium models, as well in size.

You don’t need prior experience or a boat licence to rent any of Le Boat’s boats. When you board your boat, one of the staff at the base will give everyone a safety briefing prior to departure. Then they will show you how to drive the boat and what to do when docking and undocking.

Horizon 5 Boat

Our boat during our time on the Canal du Midi was the spacious Horizon 5. It is the biggest of the Horizon range and is great for either a group or a large family holiday. It has 5 cabins each with its own en-suite that comfortably sleeps 12 people.

The boat is one of Le Boat’s premium canal holiday offerings. Its kitchen is fitted with expansive glass windows serving you views of Southern France. The French canal boat also provides saloon-style seating perfect for eating dinner, a large sunbathing and rear sitting area, and a BBQ hotplate on the sundeck.

My room was comfortable and I had a USB port to charge my phone and other electrics. I had a porthole above which I would open at night and when we were cruising to let some fresh air in. I really enjoyed staying on the Horizon 5 and would definitely stay on it again.

Appreciating how the canal’s locks work

I must admit that I didn’t fully appreciate the mechanics that go into designing a lock before I saw them in action. A boat will enter the lock chamber and the water will either raise or be lowered by filling or slowly draining the lock allowing boats to move on to the next section. While it seems like a simple process they are an incredible feat of engineering.

There are over 60 locks along the Canal du Midi waterways that assist boats to pass between section levels. Not all the locks are singular, some are double and there is even one that is six locks known as the Fonsérannes staircase.

Cruising from Homps Village

Le Boat has 4 bases along the Canal du Midi where you can hire your boat from. Our base for the trip was Homps, a couple of hours’ drive from Toulouse airport.

Homps base is at the heart of the Midi, meaning you can get either towards Toulouse or towards Port Cassafieres. Facilities located at the base are toilets and showers, plug-in ports for boat electricity and water. You can check out the other extras on their site.

This quaint French village has a handful of cafés and restaurants that are great for eating before or after you arrive. We had dinner at the La Péniche when we arrived, which was a 5mins walk from the Le Boat base. There are also several grocery shops and wine shops where you can get your supplies.

Le Somail Village

The charming French hamlet, Le Somail Village is a must see stopover. It is considered to be one of the prettiest villages along the Canal du Midi.  Located in the Aude department of southwestern France, Le Somail boasts historic buildings, lovely bars and restaurants, and even a floating deli.

One of the first things you will notice when you arrive in Le Somail is the beautiful stone-arched bridge crossing the waterway. It is called le Pont de St-Marcel and was built in the 17th century. An 18th century chapel stands at the end of the bridge, which started life as a granary. Opposite the chapel, on the left bank of the canal, sits the old ice-house.

Some fun activities in this town include viewing temporary exhibitions at the Maison Bonnal (Tourism Office). Where you’ll meet Mrs. Cradock’s hologram and be enchanted by the English traveller as she recounts her journey along Canal du Midi.

At night enjoy dinner and drinks at one of the establishments along the canal, while watching the boats calmly pass by. We ate at Le Comptoir Nature, just a stone’s throw away from the stone-arched bridge. If you want to eat on board your boat, you can purchase local produce, water, and wine from the floating deli Tamata.

Good to know: Unless you’re staying right in the village the pathways are not lit very well, so take touch with you at night.

World of books – Le Somail

If you have the time while in Le Somail take a visit to the Le Trouve Tout Du Livre, a very unique bookshop. It is located on the same side as the old ice-house and slightly hidden on the Canal du Midi.

Once you get inside you will be greeted with a treasure trove of over 50,000 books, plus an extensive collection of first-editions. Even if you don’t buy a book, this place is worth seeing, just for the mere size and the collection they have on offer.

Olive Tree Odyssey

If you love olives as much as I do, then head to the Olive Tree Odyssey. It is an Olive oil mill that produces oil products sourced from a group of local farmers. The establishment has been running since 1942 and welcomes visitors to come to discover these timeless olives and taste their products.

Olive Tree Odyssey is located in the Bize-Minervois, a tree-populated and stone-built commune in the Aude department. They offer a range of activities, from museums and interpretation sites to guided olive grove tours. On the tour, you’ll learn about the harvesting seasons, benefits, and preparation process of olive oil.

If you are travelling with kids, don’t worry, they won’t get bored. As Olive Tree Odyssey has special activities including interactive workshops and a treasure hunt organised on the day.

As I said I love olives and these are some of the best that I have eaten. I even took a jar home to my husband and they were gone in a week.

Carcassonne

Step into Mediaeval France by docking at the fortified city of Carcassonne. The city boasts plenty of ancient watchtowers and double-walled fortifications. 

Carcassonne is home to France’s largest walled city, a Roman fortification built on a hilltop. Here you’ll experience stunning views of brownstone buildings, lush green trees, and vineyards.

This medieval city has many attractions, including the local food market, a Disney-like world in La Cité de Carcassonne , and plenty of museums, citadels, and wineries. The city also boasts an array of Michelin-star restaurants serving tasty Southern French cuisine and even more delicious wine.

Wine Tasting along the Canal du Midi

As you may be aware, the one thing you will not escape from on a cruise along the Canal du Midi is wine. For avid wine lovers and collectors of note, I recommend visiting the Chateau de Ventenac-en-Minervois Winery.

Situated right on the canal in Ventenac-en-Minervois, you can’t miss this stunning Chateau. The best bit is that you can easily park your barge near it, before hopping off and walking the short distance to the winery.

The famous winemaker offers tastings and informative tours of the vault and the attic of winegrowers. Not to mention a shop where you can buy a few uniquely-crafted wines to add to your collection. They also sell products from local producers like the Olive Tree Odyssey.

Chateau De Paraza

Grab your sunhats and go on a luxury wine tasting experience and a true escape into French culture at Chateau de Paraza. Located in the Minervois, the estate ideally sits on the Paraza harbour along Canal du Midi up a small hill. 

Founded in the 17th century, the estate was initially a cultivation plant for olive groves, cereal, and the breeding of large sheep herds. The estate also hosted Pierre-Paul Riquet when he was overseeing the canal building. Today it is a successful family run winery, vineyard, and bed and breakfast.

At Chateau de Paraza, you can enjoy a range of activities, from a complimentary wine tasting and a vineyard tour to a wine-making course. The estate also provides private event facilities like weddings. You can even have the option of staying in this exceptional accommodation .

⇒ I recommended taking with you an inflatable wine cooler to keep the wine that you purchased at the wineries cool. They are so convenient to use especially if you’re having dinner on the deck when you are docked for the night.

Finish your trip with a stopover in Toulouse

The closest airport to the Canal du Midi, as well as Carcassonne, is Toulouse. I suggest adding on a few days in the city before or after your barge cruise.  This stunning 17 th century city is worthy of a one or two day visit. Toulouse is known as Pink City due to its pink terracotta bricks and is the capital of the Haute-Garonne.

It is also the official endpoint of the Canal du Midi, the other end being Agde. Here, you can combine the old with the new, like exploring the enriched old town, then visit the Aeroscopia museum where you can step on-board an Airbus A300B and Concorde. If you still have time, then I suggest taking a trip to Pic du Midi. An astronomical observatory located on top of the highest peak in the French Pyrenees.

Helpful tips for taking a cruise along the Canal du Midi

• Check the opening times of the locks before getting there, as you don’t want to get stuck and not be able to move. 
• If you know when you are docking for the night, pre-book your dock space, especially during peak season.
• Take euros with you to use at the farmer’s shops located at the individual locks.
• Make sure to take bottles of water with you on the boat. If you run out, you can get some more at the farmer’s shops on the locks. 
• Be sure not to stand on top of the boat when passing under the bridges, as some of them are super low. Some are so low that you can’t even sit on the seats, you need to duck!

Essential items for a cruise along the Canal du Midi 

Sailing Shoes (Deck shoes) – Make sure to wear good Sailing or Waterproof shoes that will grip the surface, especially when the boat is wet. I have a pair of Helly Hansen sailing and watersport shoes .

Soft sided luggage or duffel bag that is preferably waterproof for your items that you can fold up. Hard luggage will be hard to fit in your cabinet.

Sailing gloves or if you don’t have any, gardening gloves to use when holding onto the ropes when in the locks. They are for gripping the rope and for stopping you from getting rope burn. 

A small torch or head torch for walking along the towpaths back to the boat at night, as there usually is not much light.

How to travel France by canal (without going overboard)

Transport and tranquility are usually mutually exclusive, but not if you book a houseboat and cruise along France 's canals and navigable rivers. You can stop at your whim to pick up fresh produce from a local market, dine at a village restaurant or glide by a local château by bicycle. 

There are thousands of kilometers of rivers and canals that link together in a vast web touching much of the country and allowing access to the surrounding seas. Changes in altitude are taken care of by a system of écluses (locks) and boats range from self-hire houseboats to luxury hotel barges.

There are hundreds of equally wonderful canal and river routes, dotted with small houses where the lock keepers used to live (and some still do). Below is just a sample of what lies ahead. Additional world-class routes include the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, a link between Paris and Alsace and Germany via the Rhine, and the 360km-long Canal de Nantes à Brest in Brittany .

Canal du Midi

Stretching for 241km between Toulouse and Sète , the Canal du Midi is one of the great waterways of southern France. Completed in 1681 at the behest of Louis XIV and classified as a World Heritage site since 1996, the canal was designed to provide a trading route between major French ports. Combined with the Canal de Garonne, it forms part of the Canal des Deux Mers (Canal of the Two Seas), which enables boats to travel all the way from the Atlantic (near Bordeaux) to the Mediterranean.

It’s a work of art as much as engineering, lined with stately plane trees, puttering houseboats and gorgeous riverside towns. You can stroll or pedal along the towpaths as you stop along the canal’s route, or visit its cities – Toulouse, Agde, Minerve, Béziers , Narbonne, Carcassonne and Sète.

It’s also worth stopping at the Musée Canal du Midi in St-Ferréol, which explores the history of the waterway and the life of its chief engineer, Paul Riquet.

Canal de Garonne 

With 53 locks, this serene canal falls from the junction with the Canal du Midi at Toulouse to Castets-en-Dorthe at the Garonne river. The Garonne then lets out to the Bay of Biscay just beyond wonderful Bordeaux , a jolly stop for its gorgeous architecture and wine aplenty . Or, take a day trip from the boat to Sauternes for its sweet and white wines, or Roquefort, for its world-famous cheese . Another fascinating stop along the way is Moissac, a large riverside town, partly on an “island” formed between the Tarn and the Garonne Canal. Its crowning glory is the Unesco-listed Abbaye St-Pierre , a monumental abbey church. 

Canal de Bourgogne

Canal boating between Bourgogne vineyards really can’t be beat. Burgundy's 1200km of placid waterways include the Rivers Yonne, Saône and Seille and a network of canals, including the Canal de Bourgogne, the Canal du Centre, the Canal Latéral à la Loire and the Canal du Nivernais, which are detailed below. 

The spectacular 242km Canal de Bourgogne connects the river Saône in the south at Saint-Jean-de-Losne, with the river Yonne at Laroche-Migennes – which in turn connects to the Seine if you want to continue on to Paris. Highlights Include , of course, touring the regions’ magnificent vineyards and sampling the wines, as well as visiting cities like Dijon and Beaune . West of Dijon, along and around the Canal de Bourgogne, the Pays d'Auxois is a rolling land of mustard fields, wooded hills and escarpments dotted with fortified hilltop towns, including Semur-en-Auxois. Tucked into this verdant landscape are a pair of exceptional historical sites, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay and the MuséoParc Alésia historical museum.

Canal du Nivernais

Originally constructed for moving firewood from the Morvan’s forests to Paris, the peaceful Canal du Nivernais  crosses the Yonne river valley , sometimes merging with the river itself and connecting the Loire with the Seine. A top spot along the way, the ancient city of Auxerre dates back to Gallo-Roman times and now curves beautifully along the Yonne, with the magnificent Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Étienne d'Auxerre towering overhead.

You can also tour the vineyards – or simply stock the wines of the region – with Chablis being its reigning queen.

Loire Valley canals

A batch of bitty canals interlink between Burgundy and the châteaux-laden Loire Valley . They include the Canal du Centre, Canal latéral à la Loire, and the Canal de Briare.

Midway between Dijon and Lyon , Burgundy's southernmost département , Saône-et-Loire, is an inviting land of rolling green fields criss-crossed by hedgerows and dotted with indigenous Charolais beef cattle. The Canal du Centre and some fabulous bike paths meander through Saône-et-Loire's forests and pastureland.

During the region's medieval heyday it was home to the largest church in all of Christendom, the magnificent abbey of Cluny . These days it's a sleepier place, but pretty châteaux and little-known Romanesque chapels still sit around almost every bend, hinting at Saône-et-Loire's long history and making this a delightful area for day trips.

Other regional highlights include wines galore: from the wine-growing villages around Mâcon to Sancerre, which produce some of France's finest whites – taste tests abound.

Shorter hops and day trips on France's canals

If you’re not able to do a full canal cruise, you can also hop aboard a small day trip boat or punt the day away from French cities laced with canals, like Colmar . For example, boat cruises run along the Garonne in Toulouse from the Quai de la Daurade; in summer, some boats also travel onto the Canal du Midi. The two main companies are Les Bateaux Toulousains and Toulouses Croisières .

In the Dordogne Valley  you can go river boating from La Roque Gageac aboard a flat-bottomed gabarre with Gabarres Norbert .

Cycling the canals

Most boats have bikes on board or can arrange cycling day trips. With a vast network of cycling paths, the French canal towpaths are pure two-wheeling joy. Voies vertes (green ways) stretch for thousands of kilometres along old canal towpaths and are also open to walkers and horse riders, and many sections are paved to ensure a silky-smooth ride. Many connect to véloroutes – designated cycling paths .

You can cycle on or very near the chemin de halage (towpath) of the Canal de Bourgogne all the way from Dijon to Migennes (225km). The section from Montbard to Tonnerre (65km) passes by Château d'Ancy-le-Franc ; between Montbard and Pouilly-en-Auxois (58km), spurs go to the Abbaye de Fontenay and Semur-en-Auxois.

Similarly, peaceful towpaths along the Canal du Midi (check out Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo ) link the Atlantic with the Mediterranean via the canals.

Tips for canal travel in France

How to book a french canal trip.

Usually, companies, like Barge Lady Cruises , are brokers that then connect you to the outfit owning the boat or boats. Things to consider are:

• the size of the boat;
• whether there will be a skipper on board, and what other staff, like a cook or steward;
• how many staterooms will there be (and thus people you may share with);
• what do they offer in the way of day trips and how customizable are they?

...or book a luxury barge cruise instead 

Levels can become quite luxe, with your own private chef and bespoke food, drink and day trips. Smaller luxury boats can have as few as two staterooms, with a maximum of four guests, which are perfect for friends or family who want a private boat. A top purveyor in the field is Belmond , with its smaller boat, Allouette on the Canal du Midi, or larger ones like Fleur de Lys in Burgundy. 

How to rent a canal boat

If you’re up for piloting yourself, you can hire a boat. They generally accommodate from two to 12 passengers and are fully outfitted with bedding and cooking facilities. Anyone over 18 can pilot a riverboat, but first-time skippers are given a short instruction session so they qualify for a carte de plaisance (temporary cruising permit). The speed limit is 6km/h on canals and 8km/h on rivers. It’s important to read up on the route you will be taking to learn how to handle the locks and other tricks of the waterway. Except in July and August, you can often rent over a weekend.

You can also traverse the waterways by sailboat, but you must unstep (take down) the mast to do so.

Rental agencies abound. They include the following:

France Afloat – Anglophone canal-boat specialist in France, based in Vermenton, 25km southeast of Auxerre. This British-owned, family-run enterprise rents boats and provides advice for trips on France's inland waterways, including the Yonne River, the Canal de Bourgogne and the Canal du Nivernais.

Locaboat Holidays – based in Joigny, 27km northwest of Auxerre – has been renting boats throughout France since 1977. Burgundian destinations for their self-guided explorations include the Canal de Bourgogne, Canal du Centre, Canal du Nivernais and the Yonne and Seine Rivers.

Where to find a map of France's canals

Waterway books with detailed maps are a must. Excellent guides include Breil and Imray , or check out the website French Waterways for loads of info and maps on the country’s canals and waterways.

Rental companies offer boats from late March to mid-November (canals close for repairs in winter). Advance reservations are essential for holiday periods, over long weekends and in July and August, especially for larger boats. The best bet is to go during the shoulder seasons (May and June or September), when the weather is fine but wait times are shorter at the locks, and crowds fewer.

My husband and I are considering a self drive boat rental in the Brittany region Sept 2022 for about 10 days - we hope that there might be a few of you that have done this in the last few years that could share your key learnings/experience 🙂  and company's to consider - right now we are looking at booking via Le Boat or Nicols - has anyone used either of these companies and your thoughts/recommendations and the type of boat you might have booked for a couple (and was it roomy enough for the 2 of you so you didn't consider a divorce at the end of your adventure 🙂  )  ? Thanks in advance - April and Rob

Sounds fun. I’ve never done it but have considered it.  I have a friend who owned a boat and lived on it several months a year touring the canals of France and she loved it.  Be prepared to operate the smaller locks yourself.

We should be on the Canal du Nivernais as I write this is the second year we have postponed it until next year. There are four of us going our friends have been before and still own a narrow boat in the U.K. and we owned one for over twenty years. There are several companies who hire out boats ours is from Vermenton. One of the best things is that on French canals the locks are worked for you. It’s good fun don’t get the smallest boat you can definitely get bots with separate bedroom cabins. Do an internet search.

We have done a few canals on our own with Nicols. We did the Charente, the Sable sur Sarthe and canal de Bourgogne. Those were quite a few years back though (1999, 2000 and 2001).

We loved it.

I would guess Nicols have plenty of new boats since our time but anyhow we rented the Duo. It was fine for us. If you prefer more room the was the Quatro and a lot more I do not remember the names.

Its a very different kind of trip and not for everyone, but we found it very enjoyable. 

As you can see we come from Quebec so it was very easy for us to get around and talk to people even in the smallest of villages. 

But still if you like visiting small places, buying your own food at markets, sipping wine and eating cheese at sundown on your deck, you will enjoy this kind of vacation.

Choosing a starting point for your boating holiday.

You can start your boat holiday in southwest France from a number of different locations. It all depends on your own preferences. When travelling along the Canal de Garonne, holidaymakers can begin their journey at either end of the canal. This includes either starting further south in the city of Toulouse or at the northern section in the commune town of Castets-en-Dorthe. Although Castets-en-Dorthe is the canal’s most northerly section, its proximity to the city of Bordeaux makes Bordeaux a great place to visit before starting out on your canal boat .

Exploring the city of Bordeaux is a must-do activity when in this area of southwest France, as there is so much to see and do.

One of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the palace of Place de la Bourse. Designed and constructed in the early 18th century, the breathtaking palace is a reflection of France’s royal and pre-revolutionary history. As the world capital of wine, Bordeaux plays host to the museum of wine, known as ‘La Cité du Vin’. Inside the La Cité du Vin museum, visitors can see a whole collection of wine exhibitions and wine-centred history.

Aside from its fantastic architecture, wine and gastronomical must-haves, Bordeaux is one of the country’s most famous and iconic cities. This being said, no exploration of France’s southwest would be complete without a visit here, via boat, car or foot.

Sailing your Canal de Garonne boat hire westwards

After setting out from Agen, heading on a westerly route will take you along some of the greener and more picturesque routes of the canal. Passing out of the city will open your view up to the stunning views of the many arched canal bridges and aqueducts that line this section of the canal. You will now have to make the first major decision of your boating holidays ; whether to follow the canal route northwards to Castets-en-Dorthe or to follow the southerly route south along the River Baïse.

Turning into the Canal de Garonne’s tributary river, known as the River Baïse, you will be confronted with the commune town of Buzet-sur-Baïse.

As the River Baïse’s first commune, Buzet-sur-Baïse is a great place to stop and gather your thoughts and assess the new route and its surroundings. Following this tributary south, you will eventually come to the town of Nérac. Giving inspiration to the novel and film ‘Chocolat’, Nérac is a truly quintessential French town, complete with all the romantic connotations.

One of the most visited attractions in all of Nérac is the Château de Nérac. This medieval castle has a long and disjointed history, peppered with the many names and families of French royal rule. Most notably, the castle was the home of the French King Henri IV and his fellow court. Later, the castle was used as the town’s prison – all this can be learnt in detail by visiting the castle itself.

Navigating the southern regions of the River Baïse

Passing on from the town of Nérac, your boating holiday will pass into the southernmost area of the River Baïse and the many settlements along its banks. The village of Moncrabeau is a perfect stop off along the river, home to traditional French village life, complete with all its eccentricities and small village charm. One such eccentric pastime is the yearly festival known as the Festival des Menteurs or Festival of Liars in English. Contestants are scored on their abilities to tell convincing tall-tails, a tradition that has existed in Moncrabeau for many decades.

Moving on from these small riverside villages, you will come to the port town of Condom. The French commune of Condom takes its name from the Gaulish placename of Condatomagos, which in turn evolved to the more Latin, Condom.

Apart from being a major settlement along the River Baïse, Condom has many of its own attractions that make stopping here and exploring definitely worth the journey.

The principal landmark of Condom is the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, located in the heart of the town. Constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries, the cathedral is a stunning example of European Gothic architecture. Alongside the town’s architectural beauty, Condom is also known for its production of Armagnac, a local brandy that is a must-try for spirit connoisseurs travelling to southwest France. This mixture of culture, history and food are what truly make great boating holidays in France .

Boating along the Canal de Garonne towards Toulouse

Take a picturesque easterly course from agen.

Exiting the town of Agen along a more easterly route will take you towards the Mediterranean side of southwest France. This idyllic course passes through many smaller towns and communes before arriving at the mighty French city of Toulouse. The first of these major settlements holidaymakers will come to is the commune of Valence-d’Agen. Once you’re back on the easterly canal route, you will arrive at one of the most famous locations on the Canal de Garonne, the town of Moissac.

Although the town is not too large, its historical significance has meant the town often precedes itself to outsiders and foreigners. This fame largely comes from the Benedictine Moissac Abbey, which is a must-visit landmark when in the town.

Constructed as early as the 6th century, Moissac Abbey is one of the best-preserved and breathtakingly beautiful monastic buildings in all of Europe. Adorned with stone carvings and romanesque sculpture throughout, a visit to Moissac Abbey takes visitors back down the centuries to a world of monks, ultra Christianity and medieval piety.

Pass through the busy metropolises of Montauban and Toulouse

Passing on from the small commune town of Moissac and its world heritage abbey, you are then swept on further, ebbing closer to Mediterranean France. Before you make your way further east, your journey will take you to some of the biggest cities in this area of southwestern France, with the first being the city of Montauban.

If you are arriving in Montauban during the early morning hours, then head straight out to the main town square, known as the Place Nationale. Here you can watch the whole city wake up, complete with the mini market and jaw-droppingly beautiful brick townhouses and arched arcades. With its many museums, art galleries and restaurants, you are sure to find your own version of Montauban that will make you glad you moored up in time.

Following the ever-flowing canal south, your journey can end similarly to where it began, in a major French city. This time it’s not the Atlantic facing Bordeaux, but the Mediterranean sun-soaked city of Toulouse. As another of France’s world-famous cities, no journey through southwestern French waters would be complete without a visit here.

Among its many fantastic sights is, what is considered one of the greatest churches in all of France, the Basilica of Saint Sernin. This epic basilica is a combination of centuries of architectural changes and an impressive collection of sculpture and carvings. Apart from Toulouuse’s stunning architecture, the city is also home to modern French life. From its award-winning restaurants and hotels to captivating theatres and space themed museums.

After going on a river cruise around Paris and a luxury French barge cruise in the Burgundy region within a year of each other, I’ve been sold on canal cruising in France! It’s a great way to vacation, especially if you don’t want to switch hotels every few days, lug your baggage around and maneuver getting from city to city all on your own.

Nonetheless, there are a ton of seemingly endless options for cruising in France, which can be overwhelming. Here’s a guide to everything you need to know about cruising the canals of France , which will cover your budget, type of experience you’re looking for and even the French region you may want to visit.

River, Barge & Self-Driving Cruises: Different Ways of Canal Cruising in France

There are mainly three different ways to enjoy canal cruising in France: on a river cruise, a barge cruise, or driving your own boat! Each has its own perks depending on the type of holiday you’re looking for. Here’s the defining factors of each cruise.

River Cruises in France

River cruises in France are one way to explore a larger region of France. Because of its sheer size, river cruises cover more distance than barge or self-driving cruises (relative to the same number of days that they all travel).

Barge cruises in France hold about 24 passengers or less with the better cruises holding about eight or less. Because of its size, barge cruises cover less mileage but do offer more of a bespoke experience.

What a barge cruise may lack in distance, it makes up for in the quality. Many barge cruises offer a private chef, personally-recommended wines, an attentive hostess and small-group tours.

Despite its size, some barge cruises also have a jacuzzi for use on deck, a patio, and a lounge/bar area to enjoy. They even have bikes for use, which you can take out at any point such as when the boat is cruising to its next destination and you want to meet the boat there.

We recommend barge cruises for the discerning traveler of any age who wants a slow-paced, relaxing vacation and cares more about local food and wine than seeing as much of France as possible in one trip. It is a quality over quantity type of trip.

• Some cruises may NOT book your flight for you but will include an airport transfer. So when you book your flight, they’ll be at the airport waiting for you to take you to your cruise.
• Some cruises may NOT book your flight NOR include an aiport transfer. So after arriving at an airport, you may need to book a train or call an Uber to get to where your cruise is.

If the type of cruise you’re taking doesn’t book your flight for you, then we recommend flying in a day or two early to get acclimated to the local time and rest after such a long journey! Then you’ll be totally refreshed and ready for your cruise in France.

What you should pack for your cruise in France depends on the type of cruise your taking and how long your cruise is, but here are the basics that we recommend.

• Euros (although you won’t need cash on an all-inclusive, it is always good to have a bit)
• Cell phone data or a portable pocket wifi that multiple people can use
• Travel documents such as airplane tickets
• Universal travel adapter
• Wires and battery chargers for your phone/camera
• Bathing suit for the jacuzzi/pool
• Good sneakers for exploring
• Clothing for exploring and outings in cities/towns
• Clothing and shoes for nice dinners on the boat
• Proper outwear for rain or cooler weather
• Binoculars to watch wildlife
• Dual-voltage hair straightener or blow dryer
