The Best Ways of Traveling From India to Nepal

nepal and india travel

Want to take a side trip from India to Nepal? It's a popular thing to do and there are a number of ways to go about it, depending on how much money you're prepared to spend. This guide outlines the best options for travel.

Do note that Indian citizens don't require a visa to enter Nepal. However, if traveling by air, Indian citizens must show a valid passport or Voter ID when checking in, and at immigration. Aadhaar Card is not a satisfactory form of identification. If traveling overland, other forms of government-issued identification can be used at border crossings. However, it's likely that no one will even be bothered to check.

Foreigners can obtain a Nepali tourist visa on arrival at the airport in Kathmandu. Nepali tourist visas are also available from immigration at land border crossings that are open to foreigners. In addition to your passport, you'll need passport-sized photos and possibly foreign currency (some crossings insist on payment in US dollars).

Delhi to Kathmandu

If you want to fly (and get some incredible Himalayan views), Delhi to Kathmandu is the least expensive, least time-consuming route by air to Nepal (under two hours). Otherwise, the best option is to take a train to Gorakhpur and then a bus. Taking the bus all the way has become slightly more appealing since the Delhi Transport Corporation launched a direct service to Kathmandu. However, it's still a long 25-hour haul.

Varanasi to Kathmandu

Many people travel overland from Varanasi to Kathmandu, either by bus, or train and bus combination. It takes less time than overland from Delhi (around 15 hours). It's also possible to fly. However, it's much costlier than from Delhi and there are very few direct flights.

Kolkata to Kathmandu

Nepal-based Buddha Air operates three direct flights a week from Kolkata to Kathmandu: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The flights depart at 9.05 a.m. and the flight time is about 90 minutes. Expect to pay about 20,000 rupees one way. Air India also operates direct flights for a slightly cheaper cost, starting at 15,000 rupees. Alternatively, you can go by land via the Raxaul or Panitanki borders (see more below).

Via the Sunauli Border Crossing

Most people going overland from north India to Nepal pass through the Sunauli border to Bhairahawa in central Nepal, accessible from rather unappealing Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh (although, pleasingly, Gorakhpur has become a lot cleaner in recent years). This is the biggest and busiest India-Nepal border crossing. There are frequent connections to Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lumbini from there.

Via the Raxaul Border Crossing

The Raxaul border crossing to Birgunj in southern-central Nepal is accessible from Patna in Bihar . It's most convenient for anyone traveling from Bodh Gaya or Kolkata. There are direct trains from Kolkata to Raxaul (16 hours). From Bodh Gaya, it's quicker to take a bus or car and travel by road as opposed to train (13 hours). From the border, buses take six to seven hours to reach Kathmandu and eight hours to Pokhara. Shared jeeps to Kathmandu are a quicker option and only take four to five hours.

Via the Panitanki Border Crossing

The Panitanki border crossing, to Kakarbhitta in far eastern Nepal, is accessible from Siliguri in West Bengal. It's most utilized by people traveling from Darjeeling, Kolkata, Sikkim and the rest of northeast India . Buses, taxis and shared jeeps run to the border from Siliguri, Kalimpong, and Gangtok in Sikkim. Siliguri to Panitanki (for those going from Darjeeling) takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Though the border crossing is open 24 hours, the Indian and Nepali immigration offices close are only open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. so foreigners should ensure that they arrive within this timeframe. There are regular buses to Kathmandu (14 to 16 hours) and Pokhara (15 hours) from Kakarbhitta. It's worth stopping at Chitwan National Park on the way to break the journey. Get off the bus at Sauraha (nine hours from Kakarbhitta), which is the closest town and travel hub to the park.

Via the Banbasa Border Crossing

This border crossing, at Banbasa in Uttarakhand , is the most westerly crossing into Nepal from India. It's the quickest, and most rural, route from Delhi to Kathmandu. Yet, it's still a long way from Mahendra Nagar (now officially called Bhimdatta) on the Nepali side of the border to Kathmandu. Buses take about 15 to 17 hours. Banbasa can be reached from Bareilly, Rudrapur, or Haldwani in Uttarakhand (three hours). It's possible to get buses to Pokhara and Kathmandu from Mahendra Nagar. If you're not short on time, it's worth visiting Bardiya National Park on the way (get off at Ambassa, about five hours from Mahendra Nagar. Thakurdwara is the closest village to the park and it's about 40 minutes from Ambassa).

Other Border Crossings

Two other border crossing points (from Jamunaha in Uttar Pradesh to Nepalganj in western Nepal, and Gauriphanta in Uttar Pradesh to Dhangadhi in far western Nepal) are open to tourists. However, they're difficult to reach and rarely used. Non-official border crossings at Janakpur, Biratnagar and Ilam rarely allow foreign tourists.

There are a few popular choices depending on whether you're traveling by air or overland. Delhi to Kathmandu is the cheapest and quickest (less than two hours) route by air to Nepal.

If traveling by bus or train, though, Varnasi to Kathmandu is the most popular route.

Varnasi to Kathmandu is the most popular route by train, but there are also direct trains from Kolkata to Raxaul.

Varnasi to Kathmandu is a popular route for traveling by bus. Additionally, from Bodh Gaya to the Raxaul border, it's possible to take a bus or car.

--> Day 1 - Arrive in the Capital, New Delhi

At your arrival you will be met by your personal tour guide who will accompany you to the hotel and present you with all the necessary documentation regarding your trip, including the itinerary, train and flight tickets, hotel vouchers, etc. Overnight in Delhi .

--> Day 2 - Visit Old and New Delhi

Breakfast is enjoyed in the hotel, after which we set out to explore the capital. Our first port of call is the tranquil Raj Ghat , an elegant historic monument and shrine to Mahatma Gandhi, the world famous Indian statesman and pacifist. It was also the site of his cremation in 1948. We proceed to Jama Masjid , the largest mosque in the country. The sheer scale of the complex is astounding. On board a cycle rickshaw , maneuvering through the teeming, busy streets of Chandni Chowk , Delhi’s famous old bazaar , we transfer to the Red Fort with its massive red sandstone walls. It is a World Heritage Site and stands proud as a symbol of the nation’s capital.

After Lunch we will visit two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Qutub Minar, the first Muslim monument on Indian soil and finally Humayun’s Tomb at sunset . This is the beautiful tomb of a great Mughal laid to rest in.

--> Day 3 - Drive to Jaipur, Stop and Explore Samode Village and Palace

We have breakfast in the hotel and then take the road to Jaipur , the famous Pink City with its buildings of rose colored sandstone. Along the way we stop at the enchanting Samode Village to amble along its streets and marvel at the Samode Palace, the scene of numeral films. The palace buildings have been converted into heritage hotels and this is where we will have lunch before we drive the short remaining distance to Jaipur.

Tip: A sunset visit to the Nahargarh Fort Complex, or Tiger Fort, is not to be missed. The drive to the fort in the Aravalli Hills overlooking Jaipur, is pleasant and the fort itself, with its extended walls is a place of grandeur. From the ramparts Jaipur down below resembles a fairy city. There is much to see, including beautiful frescoes in the king’s consorts’ quarters, intricate carvings on pillars and doors, and a sculpture garden. Rest your feet in the café on the summit while you enjoy some refreshments.

We spend the night in Jaipur, in one of its splendid heritage hotel.

--> Day 4 - Sightseeing in Jaipur, Visits to the Amber Fort and City Palace

The entire day is spent exploring beautiful Jaipur, Rajasthan State’s capital and largest city. Founded in 1727, it was planned with wide avenues in straight lines and sandstone buildings. These were later painted in hues of pink to give the city its charming rosy color. Jaipur is famous for its fabulous handicrafts like woven rugs and carpets, blue pottery, marble sculptures, hand-printed fabrics, leather items, gems and jewelry, etc. In the heart of the city is the impressive City Palace , previously the Maharaja residence, but now an outstanding museum exhibiting paintings, rare manuscripts, weapons and royal garments. Not far from the palace we visit one of India’s most curious and mesmerizing sites. In a large peaceful garden, a number of colossal brass and marble astronomical instruments are set, all part of Jai Singh’s ambitious observatory project. Hawa Mahal , also known as Palace of Winds, another landmark in the city has a splendid intricately carved façade in pink and red sandstone from where royal ladies once looked down on the crowds below. We also pay a visit to Amber Fort, picturesquely situated on a mountain ridge, overlooking Lake Maota . Entry to the fort is through the grand Ganesh Gate after a pleasant walk uphill. The opulent palace has four levels, each with its own large courtyard. The interior is breathtakingly beautiful with mosaics, sculptures, panels inlaid with alabaster, a Hall of Mirrors and much more.

The evening is free to enjoy as you wish. We spend another night in Jaipur.

--> Day 5 - Ranthambore National Park, Afternoon Tiger Safari

During our four-hour drive, we pass various rural villages until we reach our hotel just outside Ranthambore National Park . Our first game drive is scheduled for the afternoon and we will keep our eyes peeled for the elusive Bengal tiger. Their numbers have dwindled drastically due to poaching, but after Project Tiger , a tiger preservation program was initiated in 1973, we have a bigger chance of spotting one of these amazing creatures. However, there are many other species to see, including spotted deer, Indian elephant and leopard, crocodile and birds like kingfishers, purple herons, parakeets, waders, cormorants and lots more.

Important note: The Ranthambore Tiger Reserve and Park is closed to the public due to heavy rain starting July until the end of September.

According to the latest census conducted in 2019, India’s tiger population has increased by nearly 33 percent in the last four years from 2226 to 2967 – good news indeed and a triumph for species conservation.

--> Day 6 - Early Morning Wildlife Safari, Depart for Agra, Stop at Fatehpur Sikri (6-7 hours’ drive)

We have another go at spotting tigers during our morning safari and then we take to the road. We are heading for Agra, but pause our journey at the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri . It took Emperor Akbar 15 years, from 1570 to 1585 to construct this citadel which is an accumulation of his philosophy of the highest standards in architecture, religion and art. In 1571, when a local Muslim holy man’s prediction of a long awaited son and heir came true, he made Fatehpur his capital. In due course his son Emperor Jahangir succeeded him to the throne. All the buildings are of red sandstone and decorated with painstaking care; the mosque where 10,000 worshippers can assemble, the palaces, audience halls, and residences. Unfortunately, Akbar enjoyed his beautiful citadel for a mere fourteen years before problems in the outlying territories of Punjab forced him to abandon it. And in that well preserved condition we can admire it today. It is located on a rocky ridge with wonderful views of modern Sikri village below. The special atmosphere, the outstanding architecture, and the unbelievable preservation of the original structures give us a good taste of the lives of its former royals.

After a remarkable and day full of discoveries we drive to Agra where we overnight.

--> Day 7 - Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, then Fort Agra

The marble wonder of the Taj Mahal never fails to astound, and seeing it in the rays of the rising sun is even more amazing. So, our morning starts early. This immense white mausoleum was Shah Jahan, the Moghul emperor’s tribute to the love of his life namely Mumtaz Mahal, his cherished wife. Its serene beauty leaves no-one untouched, and subsequent visits during the course of the day reveals its many faces as the sun changes the color of the exterior. The interior space is a masterpiece in detail and beauty.

In stark contrast is the nearby Red Fort , dating back to the 16th century. Imposing red sandstone walls hide the gorgeous white Pearl Mosque made entirely of marble, and numerous other marble structures. Akbar, his son Jahangir and grandson Shah Jahan who succeeded him all in time built magnificent palaces, courtyards, fountains and Audience halls. Unfortunately for the latter, the Red Fort became his jail; he spent the last years of his life imprisoned here by his son, Aurangzeb.

The afternoon is free to enjoy at your leisure.

Late afternoon is the perfect time to visit Itimad-ud-Daulah , lies beautifully on the bank of river Yamuna . It was the first Mughal building done entirely in marble and is the seventeenth century burial place of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, a notable of Mughal court, erected by his daughter Mughal Empress Noorjahan. It is sometimes referred to as Baby Taj because of its intricate detailed architecture and fine carvings. Sturdy octagonal minarets sit on each of the four corners of the roof pavilion, and detailed inlay work covers every inch of the structure. Inside exquisite latticework covers the walls of the tomb. The roof is gilded and painted, and the yellow marble tombs resembles wood. The whole area is wonderfully quiet and peaceful.

An interesting excursion is to go on a walk conducted by one of the local guides through the Kachhpura Village . The village sits on the other side of the River Yamuna and the Taj Mahal. The tours form part of a development program for the local community, and a guide will introduce you to the sites of the village, tell you what life in such a rural village is like and even help you to meet some of the locals. The tour ends up at the Mehtab Bagh , the perfect spot to admire the great Taj Mahal on the opposite bank of the river at sunset. Kachhpura is also in close proximity to other ancient sites like Humayun Mosque and Gyarah Sidi .

We spend a second night in Agra, home to the Taj Mahal.

--> Day 8 - Travel by Rail to Jhansi, Road Trip to Khajuraho, via Bundelkhand in Orchha

Early morning finds us at the station, in time for our 2-hour train journey to Jhansi , center of the former Bundela civilization. From Jhansi we travel for about twenty minutes by road, through peaceful rural landscapes to beautiful Orchha . Hugging the River Betwa , this 16th century town has not seen much change over time. It may be small in size, but there is no lack of beautiful palaces and temples built by its ruling Bundela family. First an introductory walk takes us to meet some friendly locals in their untouched surroundings. Then we will look around the temples and cenotaphs littering the river banks and attend the prayer ceremony , or puja at the Ram Raja Temple Shrine located in the center of Orchha.

We enjoy lunch in a nearby restaurant.

In the afternoon we are off to the Orchha Palace , a huge palace fort built for the Mughal king Jahangir by his friend Bir Sing Deo. Interesting are the grandiose domes, or iwans, built large enough to allow war elephants to easily pass underneath.

We have another three-hour trip to reach Khajuraho where we will overnight. Today this is a quiet, remote region but during the 900’s, it was the very center of the prosperous Chandela civilization. Hidden by dense jungle for ages, the Khajuraho Monument Group was only revealed to the outside world when locals guided a British surveyor to the site in 1838. Today the temple group is considered one of the finest examples of sculptured art in India, and is a World Heritage Site. There are intricately carved sculptures covering many aspects of human life, some of it of an erotic nature.

We return to our hotel for dinner.

--> Day 9 - View the Chandela Erotic Sculptures, Fly to Varanasi for Evening Ceremony on the Ganges

The Chandela civilization is famous for their wonderful architecture and stone art, manifested in the temples built during their reign between 900 and 1100 AD. Among the sculptures are exquisite erotic carvings in stone. These represent the importance of the Hindu prana energy and love. Today the group consists of around twenty temples, both Jain and Hindu, although it is generally believed that they counted up to 85 originally. It is well worth a trip to view these ancient 3-dimensional stone artworks.

The flight to Varanasi takes 40 minutes. We arrive during the course of the afternoon and immediately book into our hotel. This is where the very heart and soul of Hinduism reside. No wonder Varanasi is considered one of India’s holiest cities; it even spreads along on the holy Mother Ganga . Here the Hindu religion reigns and one sees 1000’s of visiting pilgrims, religious elders, wandering Sadhus or holy men, as well scores of casual visitors. The city is a visitor’s paradise; wander through the labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, explore some of the 100’s of temples, and watch Hindu rituals that fill every hour of the day.

At the close of the day we make our way to the ghats on the Ganges. The temples on the river bank, as well as the shores of the holy river is filled with people who come to bathe and pray. We watch the Aarti , the sacred ceremony of lights performed every day at sunset on the riverbank, just like it has been done since ancient times. Here time seems to stand still as we watch religious history repeating itself from a cruise boat on the Ganges. There are photo opportunities aplenty, the breath-taking beauty of the temples, the crowded colorful ghats. Just be aware the it is not permitted to photograph a burning ghat.

After the magical puja experience, we head back to the hotel where we will overnight.

--> Day 10 - Enjoy an Early morning Ganges Cruise • Benares City Tour • Excursion to Sarnath

At dawn we make our way to the Ganges waterfront. Century old religious dwellings called matts, and palaces line the river banks. According to Hindu belief, the Ganges washes away the sins of all who bathes in her, so throughout the day you will observe people dipping into the water. Bright colored saris color the banks of the river as they dry out in the sun. Priests pray to Mother Ganges, meditate and perform their morning yoga rituals on the banks. The yellow flames of many funeral pyres sparkle in the calm dark water of the river. After the peaceful, serene Ganges experience, we head back to the hotel where breakfast is served.

The afternoon sees us returning to Varanasi, also widely known as Benares for more sightseeing adventures. As one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities, it has been a center of cultural exchange and learning for centuries. We pay a visit to Benares Hindu University , an ancient establishment where students study medicine, engineering, liberal arts, philosophy and languages. We proceed to the Bharat Mata , a temple dedicated to Mother India where people pay tribute to India’s struggle for independence from British rule, personified in a large marble map of India. The last night of the Indian leg of our tour is spent in Kashi , a holy city.

During the day there will be time for a massage on the Ganges shore or to visit some of the silk and brocade emporiums.

We will also pay a visit to the Sarnath Temple Complex, a sacred site for Buddhists. Pilgrims from all over the world flock here to visit the Dhamekh Stupa , location of Buddha’s first sermon, according to belief.

Overnight stay in Varanasi!

--> Day 11 - Drive to Nepal, Visit to Lumbini, a UNESCO Site

As we will spend some time on the road today, we depart early. Our journey takes us past small towns and many interesting villages on the northern Indian plains. Arriving at the border, we walk the 500m/1640ft into Nepal, going through immigration and customs. Now our journey is only one hour through the narrow Terai lowland to Lumbini, Buddha’s place of birth . This is also where we will spend our first night in Nepal.

--> Day 12 - Rickshaw Ride and Sightseeing in Lumbini, Drive to the Chitwan National Park

There is the option to take an early morning rickshaw ride in the Lumbini Park . This is where the Buddha’s mother had her home and where he was born. It is a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists who flock here from far and wide.

We take to the road for a four-hour drive, heading east all along the mountains. Our destination is Chitwan where we will spend the next two nights.

There is nothing that compares to immersing yourself in nature. Chitwan National Park , the first in Nepal, offers the visitor life-changing encounters with nature in all its diversity and beauty. The park is home to more than 700 species of wildlife like wild boar, Bengal tigers, rhino, leopards, Bengal foxes and sloth bears.

On arrival in Chitwan, transfer to your Jungle Lodge.

After lunch, head out for Tharu on an ox cart . The fascination thing about Tharu women is that they are skilled in turning the exterior of buildings into masterpieces of artwork. As the visitor enters the village and marvel at their creativity, he/she is greeted by the locals, and furnished with interesting snippets of information regarding the lives and homes of the people. Then it is time to retire to the lodge.

As Nepal became a popular travel destination, the need arose to protect the jungle and keep visitors’ ventures authentic and sustainable. Hence the Royal Chitwan National Park was established. During a pleasant, early evening venture out with a naturalist (ecologist), the visitor will be informed about what he/she can expect to experience the next day, including some background, history and details about the environment (fauna and flora of the park). The day comes to an end with a delightful dinner while reflecting on a perfect day.

Overnight in Chitwan.

--> Day 13 - Seek out for Wild Rhino in Chitwan National Park

The safari starts at the crack of dawn when the early morning chorus of sounds begins to spread over the park. Your guide will point out camouflaged wild life you might miss. After breakfast back at the hotel, you set out for the river to watch a herd of elephants taking their mud baths . Lunch is next on the menu and then we will set out on a walk, followed by a canoe ride through the jungle. Our accompanying ecologist will point out the indigenous fauna and flora of the Chitwan buffer zone, while we continue our search for endangered birds like the black stork and Bengal florican. The return journey is made on foot all along the banks of the river.

Rest of the time at leisure. Overnight in Chitwan.

--> Day 14 - Journey to Pokhara. View the Annapurna Mountains on Route / Take a Walk to the Peace Pagoda Appreciating the Spectacular Views of the Himalaya

Today we only cover a distance of 140km/87miles, but it will take us four to five hours to complete. Starting off in the farmlands and forests of the Terai Plains , we soon move into steep terraced terrain. We drive along the Narayani River gorge until the mighty Annapurna Mountains come into view. Pokhara at just 1000m/3281ft above sea level, and the climate is pleasantly warm, with semi-tropical vegetation. Surprisingly this town is actually closer to the major peaks of the Himalayas than Kathmandu. On a cloudless morning, one can see the so-called Fishtail Peak, Machhapuchhre , commanding the sky-scape. Our hotel is simple but comfortable and is situated near Lake Phewa . There is a variety of restaurants to choose from nearby.

We enjoy a delicious Nepalese lunch before departing for the impressive Shanti Stupa , one of two peace pagodas in Nepal. This Buddhist temple was conceived by Nichidatsu Fujii and constructed by the Japanese with the help of locals in 1980. There are various ways to reach the monument. You can take a boat across Lake Phewa and then follow a moderately easy 20 to 25-minute hike through a few villages, or you can drive or cycle to the foot of the pagoda and climb up the ±400 steps to reach the top. Whatever route you decide on, the views of the surrounding landscape and the lake are spectacular. Many shops on the hike offer a refreshing tea-break opportunity to catch your breath.

The air at the top of the stupa is wonderfully cool, and you can feast your eyes on the beauty of the peaks of the Annapurna Mountains. Looking down is equally breath-taking, with the green valley landscape, the peaceful water of Lake Phewa and Pokhara city. The rewards for climbing up all those steps are certainly worth their while. Four golden Buddha statues are found on the second tier of the pagoda and nearby, in the Dhamma Hall is a huge meditation Buddha statue. The entire Pokhara valley can be seen from four different sides of the temple.

The reminder of the day is yours to spend as you choose

--> Day 15 - Mountain Views at Sunrise, Day Free to Explore, Optional Trek to Sarangkot

You may choose to simply relax and enjoy the breath-taking views from a boat on the Phewa lake , or on its shore. For those with more energy there are numerous options. Pokhara has many day walks around the valley or into the mountains. A good option is to drive to what remains of the fort up at Sarangkot . Make an early start to take advantage of the spectacular views of the uninterrupted Annapurna peaks and the city and lake from the fort. This location is considered one of choicest viewpoints of Machhapuchhare, the region’s favorite peak. Then hike down back to Pokhara. Many visitors enjoy renting a bicycle or row boat to explore the shoreline and Lake Phewa at their own relaxed pace.

The reminder of the day is yours to spend as you choose.

A visit to the IMM, or International Mountain Museum is a must for all enthusiastic mountaineers and climbers. This organization strives to aid and assist the Himalayan people, and endeavors to bring this majestic natural wonder to the attention of people all over the world. The museum has exhibits of the local wildlife, an historic display of the local Nepalese people, as well as an exhibition covering the very first and subsequent major Everest expeditions. Also on view are the equipment these brave early mountaineers used; all and all a very informative and interesting museum to visit.

So, make the most of your day, whether you decide to relax next to the pool and enjoy the beautiful scenery, or take a colorful paddle boat on Lake Phewa, you cannot go wrong. Succumb to this exotic land’s spiritual rhythm and re-energize yourself. And of course there is always paragliding to soar with the clouds, for those of you who cannot get enough of this remarkable region.

--> Day 16 - Drive Along the Rivers Marsyangdi and Trisuli to Kathmandu

Today we have a six to seven-hour drive parallel to the Himalayas on a road built by the Chinese. We will only cover 200km/124 miles, but it is mostly uphill and the going is slow. However, you will enjoy every minute of the drive; we follow two rivers, Marsyangdi and Trisuli past many local villages with terraces reaching 1000’s of meters up the hill. When we enter Kathmandu later in the afternoon, we check into the hotel in the heart of the city.

After lunch, start your exploration on foot and walk through the busy streets to Kathmandu Durbar Square . This square was seriously damaged during the earthquake of 2015, but the numerous temples, courtyards and palaces all built in Newari architectural style are worth a visit. The square enjoys UNESCO status and is one amongst 3 royal palace plazas in this valley.

The bazaar is the gathering place of the people of the city and here you get a glimpse of the everyday life of the inhabitants; there are traders in fruit, spices and vegetables, potters spin their wheels and shape all kinds of household bowls, as well as containers for the temple offerings. In the narrow alleys of the bazaar rickshaw wallahs honk their horns to attract the attention of would-be passengers, and devotees visit their favorite small shrines and temples scattered around the area. Your path will definitely cross that of the many sacred cows that wander through all this hustle and bustle.

In evening, we will take a guided walk through Thamel . In Kathmandu , the majority of activities are connected with Thamel, a flourishing hiking district. The coiled pathways lead to historic Unesco-listed sites, busy markets, booming bazaars, and delightful restaurants that serve the widest variety of food you can think about. It is fantastic, stimulating, and worth every ounce of energy. Explore the many streets and meet some of the friendliest people alive. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

--> Day 17 - Optional Mount Everest Mountain Flight / Durbar Squares

Not many people get to climb Mount Everest to admire its splendor first hand, but there is another option to see this magnificent mountain with your own eyes. You can take a flight in a sixteen seater airplane and fly over beautiful snow-covered peaks and valleys with clouds dipped in the golden glow of early morning. The flight lasts for 45 minutes which will give you ample time to admire the sheer immensity of Mount Everest . In fact, it is double the size of the Alps. You will get a panoramic view of the whole area and can take that award winning picture from the plane’s cockpit! The cost is 220 euro and includes airport transfers.

Your trip to Kathmandu will not be the same if you do not visit these three beautiful sites.

Nepal was once separated into three main kingdoms: Basantapur (Kathmandu), Bhaktapur and Patan . Each of these kingdoms consisted of a royal palace surrounded by squares in the Kathmandu Valley.

Today, Nepal is united and each Durbar Square has idols, statues, temples, open courts, and fountains, as well as other attractions. To see the ancient architecture of Nepal, Newari wood creations , and historic traditions, visit the Square. If you love people-watching, it’s the perfect place.

Patan stands out as the favourite, but they are all magnificent with outstanding architecture, good maintenance and an easy-going vibe.

The earthquake took its toll on these UNESCO World Heritage sites more than others in Kathmandu. Yet, their famous beauty has remained intact. Spend the day looking through these squares; you will love it. Also take a little tour of the places around the sites where you will find small pathways, temples, and religious monuments.

Patan , the City of Beauty, has a wealth of cultural history. Though it is said to have “stood still” with time, it is full of life. It is best to explore Patan by foot, walking the cobbled roads, viewing more than 600 temples including the ancient pagoda temples. Patan is still affectionately called by its original name, Lalitpur – the City of Beauty, and you will see why. It is the home of the living goddess Kumari whom you can pay a visit.

Bhaktapur is a traditional, medieval town and a World Heritage Site that is well worth a visit.

If you are looking for souvenirs, you have come to the right place. There are pashminas , the unique Nepalese musical instruments called singing bowls, traditional jewelry, trinkets, handicrafts from Nepal and Tibet, and well-stocked bookstores. These are also restaurants galore, serving a variety of the very best traditional cuisine from all over Asia. And of course you will find a fine pizza and tasty apple pie. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

--> Day 18 - WELCOME KATHMANDU’S SPIRITUAL SIDE IN SWAYAMBHUNATH, PASHUPATINATH & BOUDHANATH STUPA

Nepal is Bhudda’s birthplace and a place where spirituality is important. No wonder some of the most sacred temples are found in the Hindu and Buddhist areas.   PASHUPATINATH , LIFE, AND DEATH Nepal is a vibrant society, always filled with the hustle and bustle of life. That being said, the holy Pashupatinath Hindu temple is a dim reminder that life ends at some point.

Here, Shiva, the Hindu god of change and destruction is honoured. This place is deemed so holy those who are not Hindus are banned from going in. On the holy Bagmati river banks followers are cremated on open air ghats. Their souls are taken to the hereafter and reincarnation, while their bodies go back to the dust of the earth, then into the waters of the holy river. In Nepal, life and death co-exist; Pashupatinath is the evidence of that.

The bright Shivalinga and large golden statue of Shiva’s Bull, Nandi are the main attractions. The colourful artwork is also quite captivating.   BOUDHANATH STUPA AND BUTTER CANDLES Boudhanath stupa is the perfect place to experience Kathmandu’s spiritual side. Every day, thousands of devotees walk around the central dome, turning the wheels of prayer as they journey. Visitors take in all the activities, including the chants and prayers of the Tibetan monks in the monasteries.

Boudhanath is a huge circular Buddhist temple from the 14th century. This double stupa holds two titles: largest in Nepal and the most sacred Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet.

Experience the most authentic Boudhanath atmosphere when you visit in the late afternoon. It is then the locals carry on with their daily lifestyles and the areas around are not as busy.

The white-washed dome is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags, and you will be impressed by the all-seeing eyes of Bhuddha from the ground. But when you realize the aerial view changes the complex into a Mandala form and a tribute to Buddha’s path to enlightenment, you will be awe-struck.

When butter candles are lit and offered to Lord Buddha, pilgrims of several ethnicities and religions pass by the stupa, chanting and turning the 108 prayer wheels as they go.   SWAYAMBHUNATH’S ATTENTIVE EYES Swayambhunath (or Monkey temple) is a place in Kathmandu you must visit for an unforgettable experience. Taking the 365 steps to reach Swayambhunath Stupa will be breathtaking (pun intended) as Bhuddha watches on.

Your reward is the stunning view of the valley, where you capture the busy Kathmandu lifestyle. It’s certainly worth the throbbing heart after the climb.

The temple represents both Buddhism and Hinduism, which is very interesting to see. The strong scent of incense and butter candles fill the air and there is the hum of the holy om mani padme hum where all of Buddha’s teachings are believed to be found.

The ideal visiting time to the stupa is in the evening when the worshippers pass by turning the prayer wheels and chanting as they walk through the clouds of incense in the air. The view from the hilltop gives you perfect shots of Kathmandu; sunset is a great time to get those pics.

Unfortunately, the 2015 earthquake caused much destruction to the top of the stupa. However, most of its structure is still intact.

Cultural and religious acceptance is evident at these three sacred sites. The tolerance for diversity reveals Nepal not only has beautiful landscape but also a lovely heart.   Take Time to Relax Catching up with the hum drum of Kathmandu will exhaust you, but you can find rest and solace in the Garden of Dreams, a neo-classical historical garden . Found on the outskirts of Thamel, this splendid garden has several verandahs, pavilions, fountains, and an amphitheatre where you can sit back and relax on the pillows provided. And when you get hungry, try the Kaiser restaurant that whips up a delicious burger if you like! Overnight stay in Kathmandu .

India and nepal round trip: review + pictures.

**This review was written in German and has been translated using Google Translator

We have decided at short notice to make a North India-Nepal round trip in October 2022.

On the Internet we came across “VacationIndia.com” and contacted Mr. Vikas, the owner of VacationIndia.com. The reaction time impressed us already here. Within a very short time Mr. Vikas contacted us and made us an offer according to our wishes.

Also during the round trip, Mr. Vikas, whom we were allowed to meet personally in Agra, was always available at very short notice via WhatsApp. In case of small inconsistencies – there were real problems on the round trip – he intervened immediately.

The trip was perfectly tailored to our wishes. Since our English skills are not so good, Mr. Vikas got us German-speaking guides almost throughout the trip, which was certainly not always easy.

Our trip started i n mid-November 2022 in Delhi and took us via Jaipur, Ranthambhore, Agra, Ochra, Khajuroho and Varanasi to Napal. The stops there were Lumbini- the birthplace of Buddha- Chitwan National Park, Pokara and finally Kathmandu.

The trip was an unforgettable experience. Special mention should be made of the bike tour we did early in the morning in Jaipur. A real “blast”.

Thank you very much for the great arrangement.

Many greetings from Germany

MY TRIP TO INDIA

Between the months of October and November of this year 2017, my partner and I decided to organize a 22-day trip through northern India and Nepal.

We always organize it ourselves but this time we decided to do it through an agency due to lack of time and because it is a more special country and without a doubt we found the best.

Laura Gutiérrez organized a trip for us according to our tastes and demands. She dedicated time, affection and informed us of all the possibilities that the country offered, thus being able to create a personal trip to India for me and my partner. And I think that’s the key to this agency. A trip to an incredible country tailored to your needs. With the guarantee that everything will go well. So that you just let yourself be carried away by the magic of its cul ture and its people. Excellent work Laura.

Once there in India, you did not get confused Laura, the team a 10. Driver, guides, hotels, services, meals, security … Everything that was planned and contracted was fulfilled, there were no changes, no surprises, no mistakes , problems …. an impeccable service in all areas. So my congratulations to Vikas and his entire team who have managed to make my partner and I carry a little piece of that magnificent country forever in our hearts. And they have shown us with so much affection the day to day of each place.

So thank you again and I 100% recommend hiring this agency “VacationIndia” if someone wants to organize a tailor-made trip to this impressive country. In fact my next route, this time through the south, I will also contract with you.

Again A MILLION THANKS to Vicas, Laura, Vipull, Mahande, Mannú, Hukam, to all the guides….it has been a pleasure to meet you and thank you for making our trip an unforgettable trip…

The trip of a lifetime!

**This review was written in Spanish and has been translated using using Google Translator

I had been dreaming of visiting India for many years and without a doubt, I found the best people who helped me to achieve it. In the beginning Laura helped me with all the planning and recommendations of the places to visit in 9 days. Incredible woman and human being, super friendly and efficient, thank you Laura! On my arrival at the airport Rahul and Mr Vikas were there to meet me. They were very kind. Mr Vikas explained everything about the tour and gave me all the documents I would need, including the domestic flights, all excellently organized.

We started in Delhi, the city is amazing, it stimulates all the senses trying to understand it and keep up with it. Mr Vishal was my Spanish speaking guide and Rahul the driver who understands English very wel l.

Afterwards, we took the road to Agra, to visit two of the most impressive things I saw in India: Taj Mahal and the Red Fort.

It is impossible to describe in words what one feels when seeing the Taj Mahal for the first time, I simply cried from the emotion and the beauty of the place, while Mr. Vishal took pictures of me and told me about the romantic story of love and betrayal that exists behind this spectacular monument.

Afterwards, we drove to Jaipur, the pink city, while Rahul and Mr. Vishal told me about the customs of their country and showed me their beautiful families in pictures.

The hotel in Jaipur was very new and very luxurious, it was a super nice stay and I slept delicious. In Jaipur there is a lot to see and it is very different from Delhi and Agra, highly recommended.

I was approaching my last destination for which I had to take a plane: Varanasi. I was really looking forward to visiting this magical city and being on the Ganges. It all started with a boat ride before dawn, it is impressive everything you see! From temples showing the monk children how to do yoga, people doing their first bath in the Ganges, cremations, people meditating or doing yoga on the stairs going down to the river, there are so many things to admire that you need more than two okis to do it. In the evening, they do a fire ceremony where they give thanks for the day, and they do it every day, it is amazing.

The next day I went to the place where Buddha gave his first discourse. My guide in Varanasi was a really spiritual man who gave me tremendous life lessons, there couldn’t have been a better guide to be there, and also visit the Buddha’s space, a super quiet and beautiful place, where I could see for the first time a live lotus flower. Fascinating.

In the planning of the trip, Laura was impeccable, and in the execution of the trip, Mr Vikas was attentive all the time to make my stay unforgettable and it was.

I thought that going alone would be more complicated, but India Travel made sure that I felt safe and protected all the time. Thank you total!!!!!!

Thank you so much to India Travel for this experience, they are dedicated to making people happy and fulfilling their dreams, they are wonderful!

Your preferences design the real journey. We're ready to create a wonderful India and Nepal tour for you.

Welcome to Delhi. Your guide and driver will meet you in the arrivals hall and take you to your hotel. Enjoy your free time for the rest of the day.

The sacred Jama Masjid , which is the biggest mosque in India, will be your first stop of the tour. Islamic and Indian cultures combine in this great architectural structure. Imagine how magnificent and solemn it is when 20,000 Muslims pray there. Then, take a rickshaw ride through the bustling Chandni Chowk market, which is a great way to discover the local people's lifestyle in Old Delhi.

In the afternoon, go and see Qutub Minar and Humayun's tomb . Understand the history of India through these great architectural structures. Listen to stories about the great figures and their splendid dynasties.

Fly from Delhi to Varanasi. You might have heard a lot about the Indian people's mother river. You might have imagined a thousand times what happens right next to the river. You will still be shocked when you go and see it with your own eyes. Take a boat ride on the Ganges River in the late afternoon to see pilgrims washing their bodies, praying, and performing ancient rituals. Then visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple to experience the highly choreographed Ganga Aarti ceremony .

Another highlight of a trip to Varanasi is enjoying a boat ride at sunrise when the temples along the river are bathed in the soft morning light. This sight is different from the one on the previous evening. People are washing their clothes, performing yoga, and praying with flowers.

After the boat ride, your guide will show you around the old city of Varanasi. The ultimate destination for all Hindu pilgrims, Varanasi is full of temples, shrines, and devotees. In the afternoon, you will say goodbye to the holy city of Varanasi and fly to Jaipur via Delhi.

Start your exploration with a photo stop at the landmark of the 'Pink City', the famous Hawa Mahal . Then you will visit the glorious Amber Fort . The corridor with elegant pillars, the lovely colors of the patterns on the walls, the shining mirrors in Sheesh Mahal ' any of them can show you the splendid achievements that the ancient Indians gained in architecture and art.

In the afternoon, continue your trip to Jaipur's City Palace . Explore another luxury residence of the maharajas of Jaipur. The Jantar Mantar is next to the City Palace. Be impressed by the wisdom of the ancient Indians in astronomy and mathematics.

You will be driven from Jaipur to Agra in the morning. After lunch in a local restaurant in Agra, you will visit Itmad-ud-Daula's Tomb , which is often called the 'Baby Taj' as it is an impressive white marble building decorated with colorful mosaics and stone inlays.

Then you will head for Mehtab Bagh (the Moonlight Garden) to catch the romantic sunset view of the Taj Mahal. The garden is located behind the Taj Mahal and the Yamuna River flows between them peacefully. Watch the Taj Mahal as the sun sets. At this moment, the Taj Mahal is just like a beautiful lady sitting on the riverbank, wearing a sari made of the sunset glow.

Visit the Taj Mahal in the early morning before the other tourists arrive. The closer you walk to it, the more moved you will be by the spectacular ivory-white marble building and the emotion that sparked its creation.

Agra Fort is a magnificent 16th-century fortress made of red sandstone. Imagine the luxurious lifestyle of the royal family in this fantastic palace.

In the afternoon, you will be driven back to Delhi for the next leg of your South Asia trip.

Fly from Delhi to Kathmandu.Walk around Kathmandu Durbar Square in the afternoon. You will get excited when the old temples and palaces come into view one by one. Make a wish at the small and exquisite Ashok Binayak. Admire the statues in the magnificent Hanuman Dhoka. Take pictures of Shiva and his wife on the stairs of Shiva-Parvati Temple. Imagine what the living goddess looks like in Kumari Bahal.

In the late afternoon, climb the mountain to visit Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple) . You will find out how well Hinduism and Buddhism combine there.

Start with the most information and the most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal, Pashupatinath Temple . It might not seem solemn at first glance; however, it is indeed where the spirit of Hinduism lies.

After experiencing the spiritual strength of Hinduism, you will continue to Boudhanath Stupa to feel the piety of Tibetan Buddhism. The eyes on the golden pagoda seem to have a magical power that catches your eyes. In the afternoon, you will visit another city in the Kathmandu Valley, Bhaktapur. Bhaktapur Durbar Square might be less crowded than the other two Durbar squares.

In the morning, you will go to Patan to see the most magnificent Durbar Square in the Kathmandu Valley. When you walk around the square, you will be impressed by the stone carvings in Krishna Mandir, the amazing religious artworks in Patan Museum, and the exquisite pool for the king in Sundari Chowk. Before heading for Nagarkot, you will visit Changu Narayan Temple . It is the oldest temple that people still use in Nepal. It is small but an exquisite World Heritage Site. The wood and stone carvings are the highlights there.

Enjoy the view of eight mountains including Mount Everest as the sun rises. Then your guide will escort you from Nagarkot to the airport in Kathmandu to catch your flight back home or to your next destination.

Highlights from Explore India & Nepal

When you visit India, it assaults the senses, stretching them further than you may have thought is possible. You may hear calming religious music, see women dressed in vivid colors, and taste new flavors—not all of them spicy. You will smell fresh coconut milk and jasmine blossoms, and feel the smooth stones of temple floors beneath your bare feet,”—Louise Nicholson, National Geographic Traveler: India guidebook, 2010

Day 1 Delhi

Arrive at any time; your arrival transfer is included through Women With Wheels, a G Adventures–supported project.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 delhi/agra.

Set out to discover Delhi, the capital of India, which consists of two cities: historic Delhi and New Delhi, built by the British in the early 20th century. Explore New Delhi’s lively Paharganj district with a youth guide from the G Adventures–supported City Walk project, and hear about how the program provides opportunities to disadvantaged street youth. Then delve into the narrow, winding lanes of Old Delhi, visiting the 17th-century Jama Masjid—the largest mosque in India—and the Sikh temple Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, located close to a busy shopping area. Drive to Agra this afternoon.

Meals included:

Spend the day in historic Agra, which served as the capital of the Delhi sultanate and later of the Mughal Empire. Discover the Taj Mahal, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; widely considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, this breathtaking mausoleum was built by the emperor Shah Jahan for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Afterward, visit the exquisite tomb of Mumtaz Mahal’s grandfather, often referred to as the “baby Taj,” and explore Agra Fort, an impressive red sandstone citadel which conceals palaces of white marble within.

Day 4 AGRA/JAIPUR

Travel to Jaipur, the capital of the state of Rajasthan. On the way, stop at the magnificent Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, a masterpiece of red sandstone, and hear about its fascinating history. The emperor Akbar built a short-lived capital here in the 16th century to honour a Muslim saint from the village of Sikri who had predicted the birth of his son, Jehangir. Then visit the Rajasthani village of Abhaneri for a walk around the Chand Baori—an ornately decorated stepwell or water tank constructed over a thousand years ago—learning about ancient Indian methods of water conservation.

Day 5 Jaipur

Explore Jaipur, known as the “Pink City” for its rose-coloured buildings. Take a tour of the sprawling Amber Fort, the former residence of Jaipur’s Rajput rulers; and visit Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, a stunning five-story sandstone building with distinctive honeycombed windows. We’ll also meet with a local historian to discuss India’s complex social fabric, customs, and architecture. Tonight, consider going to the cinema to watch a Bollywood movie—a truly unique experience.

Day 6 Jaipur/Pachewar

Drive to the rural village of Pachewar, where we stay in a beautiful heritage home. Exploring this traditional community is like stepping back in time: walk and meet with local residents, observing potters, silversmiths, and cobblers at work; wander amid old temples and mud homes, perhaps witnessing a cooking demonstration; and note how urbanization and modernization have altered village life.

Day 7 Pachewar/Delhi

Drive back to bustling Delhi. This evening, opt to join the group for a farewell dinner.

Day 8 Delhi/Kathmandu

Transfer to the airport and catch a flight to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. After our welcome meeting, experience a sound bath wellness demonstration and enjoy a six-course dinner featuring organic Nepali cuisine.

Day 9 Kathmandu

Spend the day exploring Kathmandu, the colourful capital of this Himalayan nation. Pay a visit to Bodhnath Stupa, the holiest Tibetan Buddhist shrine outside of Tibet, and explore the wood-carved temples, pagodas, and palaces of Bhaktapur, Nepal’s medieval capital.

Day 10 Kathmandu/Pharping

Venture to the ancient hilltop temple of Swayambhunath, decorated with vibrant prayer flags and home to troops of rhesus monkeys. Later, we’ll hear about National Geographic Grantee Chhing Lhomi’s efforts to preserve the weaving traditions of the Upper Mustang region through her work with the Himalayan Indigenous Society, a Kathmandu-based nonprofit. Then depart for nearby Pharping, known for its Buddhist pilgrimage sites, and settle into a tranquil monastery guesthouse for the night. Get an insider’s view of monastery life, and enjoy a chanting and prayer service; or opt to take a walk in the monastery’s peaceful grounds. Enjoy a cooking demonstration at local community restaurant and learn how to make Nepalese momos (dumplings). Afterwards, taste your delicious creations.

Day 11 Pharping/Kurintar

Rise at dawn to listen to the monks’ morning chanting, and witness a stunning sunrise. Then drive to the small riverside village of Kurintar and hike to our lodge, nestled on a forested hill overlooking the Trishuli River. Opt to relax by the pool or take a guided walk through the surrounding countryside, stopping at local villages.

Day 12 Kurintar/Royal Chitwan National Park

Today, we travel towards Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s oldest wildlife reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The park is home to 68 recorded mammal species, including the one-horned rhino and the Bengal tiger, as well as hundreds of species of birds. Check in to our lodge, located on the banks of the East Rapti River. After lunch, board a traditional flat-bottomed boat for a river safari, keeping your eyes out for aquatic birds, crocodiles, and other riverine fauna.

Day 13 Royal Chitwan National Park

Spend the day exploring Chitwan National Park on a variety of excursions; activities differ depending on the season. Set out on a jeep safari through the grasslands and forests, seeking out rhinos, leopards, elephants, monkeys, and the elusive Bengal tiger. Meet with a “tiger technician” from the Nepal Tiger Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to the protection and conservation of these majestic cats. Visit a farming village bordering the park for a glimpse of rural life, and return to our lodge this evening in time for a dance performance by the local Tharu people.

Day 14 Royal Chitwan National Park/Pokhara

Drive to Pokhara, an enchanting town set on the shores of turquoise-hued Phewa Lake against a backdrop of snowcapped Himalayan peaks. Enjoy a guided walk around the city, and opt to have dinner at a popular local restaurant.

Day 15 Pokhara

Venture to Sarangkot village early this morning and hike to the famed Sarangkot lookout to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Annapurna Himalaya. Back in Pokhara, climb up a lush forest path to the gleaming white Peace Pagoda, built by Japanese monks after World War II. Later, visit a Tibetan refugee settlement, established by the United Nations in 1964. Learn about the history of the community on a walk through their photo gallery, and enjoy a traditional Tibetan lunch. In your free time, opt to take a boat tour of Phewa Lake.

Day 16 Pokhara/Kathmandu

Catch a flight back to the capital, Kathmandu. Enjoy time to shop in the bustling Thamel district, or choose to visit Pashupatinath Temple, the most sacred Hindu temple complex in Nepal.

Day 17 Kathmandu

Depart at any time.

Welcome to India & Nepal

From the Arabian Sea to the Himalayas, from the ultramodern architecture of New Dehli to the forests of Bandhavgarh National Park in India and Chitwan National Park in Nepal, our unique experiences show you the incomparable cultural diversity, compelling history, and spectacular natural beauty of the Indian subcontinent.

Kathmandu, nepal, i'm going to kathmandu....

Kathmandu... the very name of this Nepalese city conjures up images of one of the most exotic regions on Earth. Your stay in Kathmandu with Tauck takes you to Pashupatinath Temple on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, one of the holiest of all Hindu temples... a flightseeing adventure above the alpine landscapes of Mount Everest... a tour of Durbar Square, where ancient temples and pagodas are clustered around the old royal palace... a visit to Kasthamandap, the namesake of Kathmandu, said to be built from a single mythical tree... a rickshaw ride through the marketplace of Thamel ... and a visit to Kopan Monastery, where you'll take your shoes off and join the monks before traveling to the colossal stupa of Boudhanath, encircled by images of Buddha and hundreds of prayer wheels.

The Taj Mahal in Agra, India

A timeless monument to love in agra.

You could say that India's Taj Mahal is so famous that it needs no introduction… but it's so compelling a destination that it's hard not to talk about it. Considered the greatest achievement of Indo-Islamic architecture, this exquisite, domed, white marble mausoleum complex in Agra was commissioned in 1632 and completed two decades later as the tomb and memorial of Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Constructed at a cost that would be upwards of USD $825 million today, it ranks among history's most expensive declarations of love. Along with touring it with a local guide, you'll also see it from your hotel room!

The Khajuraho Temples, India

The famous temples of khajuraho.

The Indian town of Madya Pradesh is home to what today is known as the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you'll visit with Tauck, comprises a famous group of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples built between the 10th and 11th centuries by the Chandela Rajput Dynasty, praised by UNESCO for striking a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture... and famous both for their nagara-style symbolism, and the provocative nature of the statuary decorating many of the temples. Of the 85 or so temples that historians believed once stood in this area, only 25 have survived the ravages of time.

Jaipur, India

The gems of jaipur... and a remarkable way to see them.

The stunning city of Jaipur, India, is home to such highlights as the City Palace Museum, the Jantar Mantar Observatory, the massive gateways and pillared pavilions inside Amber Fort, and the magnificent domes and massive ramparts of Amber Palace. And there's no more exciting way to see these treasures than from above – aboard a hot air balloon soaring over Jaipur – an experience that's included in our "A Portrait of India" journey.

India & Nepal Adventure

20 days | enjoy an in-depth exploration through the delights of india and nepal.

India delhi jama masjid birds

Combine the best of India and Nepal in one superbly comfortable trip. Experience the colour and chaos of Delhi's bazaars and witness displays of faith on the burning ghats of Varanasi. Roam the grounds of the iconic Taj Mahal, head out on a jungle safari and listen for the whispering prayer flags of Kathmandu. Throw in temple towns and village visits, lakeside retreats and mountain walks, spiritual moments and local interactions for an unforgettable tour bursting with incredible adventures.

Trip overview

  • Soak up the unique atmosphere of a candle flower ceremony at dusk on the Ganges River in Varanasi, then wake up early for a sunrise boat ride, where you’ll watch the light gradually illuminate the many ghats and temples along the river.
  • Explore the Taj Mahal – one of the Seven Wonders of the World – and learn of its lesser-known poetic history from a local expert among the surrounding gardens.
  • Take a jeep safari with a local guide in Chitwan National Park – a beauty brimming with exotic wildlife – and you may be lucky enough to spot rhinos or elusive leopards and tigers.
  • Visit a Tibetan refugee camp and get to know the community before taking on a cooking demonstration to learn how to create traditional momos (steamed dumplings).
  • By travelling on this trip, you'll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Forget Me Not. Donations help them provide job training, work experience and employment opportunities for young people who've grown up in institutionalised Nepalese orphanages.
  • Don’t underestimate the weather at any time of year in India. In the summer months, the heat can be extreme. In winter, some travellers have been surprised by the cool evenings. A hat, sunscreen, and clothing that can be layered will serve you well year-round.
  • This trip has some early starts, allowing you to see more of the country in the captivating morning light. Please refer to the Itinerary for more details.
  • Flights and trains in India can be delayed between December and February due to fog.
  • This trip does not go to high altitudes, so if this was keeping you back from visiting Nepal in the past, this trip is for you.
  • While on a map you aren't travelling particularly far, the reality of road travel ais that things always take longer than you expect. Some roads will be bumpy, dusty or even unexpectedly blocked requiring reroutes and plenty of patience.
  • Hotels in some destinations may vary in standard and facilities, and hot water may occasionally be limited. There will be times when the location of our accommodation will mean it is practical to eat at the hotel restaurant rather than heading out for optional meals.
  • While there will be opportunities to spot many different kinds of wildlife, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
  • You will see tour operators offering elephant riding activities and many tourists taking part in them during your time in Chitwan. Intrepid Travel has a strong elephant welfare policy and as such we discourage travellers from riding elephants in Nepal or anywhere around the world. Please refer to the 'Responsible Travel' section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.

If you arrive early, get out and explore at your own pace. Filled with historical sites from different eras, museums, galleries and endless bazaars, this thriving capital has plenty to do and see. Maybe head to the Red Fort or the Lotus Temple, get a photo at India Gate or explore the World Heritage-listed Humayun’s Tomb. Later, why not get your new group together for a welcome meeting and sample of this country’s famed food.

  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer

The arrival transfer is only valid if you arrive on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Early this morning, you’ll take a train to Varanasi. This holy city is awash with shrines and temples and is the ultimate destination for Hindu pilgrims who travel from far and wide to experience the spirituality of this haven. When you arrive this afternoon, you’ll head out on a walking tour of the Old City, through narrow laneways packed with stalls and shops, past the dhobi wallahs and the endless temples that echo with bells and permeate the aroma of incense. This evening, soak up the unique atmosphere with a candle flower ceremony at dusk. A beautiful ritual to witness, you’ll watch on as locals give offerings of small candles cradled by leaves and flowers to the Goddess Ganga – then float the glowing hand-made pieces down the river as the sun sets in the background.

  • Varanasi - Leader-led Old City walking tour
  • Varanasi - Sunset candle flower ceremony

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.

After, there’s the option to take a trip to nearby Sarnath – one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage destinations. The site is where Buddha preached his message of the path to enlightenment and features a number of stupas and museums to explore. Your afternoon is free to spend how you wish – maybe explore the laneways and alleys behind the ghats or pick up some keepsakes from the array of excellent local silk. For dinner, you’ll enjoy a group meal of vegetarian thali at a local restaurant. A thali is a popular style of serving food in India, offering a selection of dishes, sides and condiments on a single large plate.

  • Varanasi - Sunrise Ganges boat trip
  • Varanasi - Sarnath - INR315

This morning, take a flight back to India’s buzzing capital. When you arrive, check in to your accommodation, freshen up and then enjoy a free afternoon to spend how you wish. Maybe visit Swaminarayan Akshardham, set on a vast 100 acres of gardens. Maybe just go searching for the perfect street food snack or go on a photo-taking walk.

Today you’ll head to Jaipur, Rajasthan's capital, by private vehicle. Arrive in the Pink City and discover its trademark pink hues on a walking tour with a local guide. Navigate crowded streets packed with cars, camel carts, rickshaws, trucks and bicycles, past traditionally dressed Rajput men wearing colourful turbans and sporting magnificent moustaches. Make a photo stop at India's most photographed building after the Taj Mahal – the Hawa Mahal or 'Palace of the Winds'. You will also have the option of visiting Jantar Mantar – an observatory filled with instruments to track the stars, built by the founder of Jaipur, Maharaja Jai Singh. Tonight, maybe continue to indulge in the wonders of Indian culture by watching a Bollywood blockbuster – an elaborate combination of action, romance, drama and music, at the spectacular Raj Mandir Cinema.

Later, climb the twisting roads of the Aravalli Hills and round the final bend to see the massive Amber Fort loom into view. You’ll head on a walking tour to explore the Amber Fort with a local guide – the legacy of a fallen empire, the opulent palace is a superb example of Rajput architecture and is packed with elaborate rooms of lavish murals, frescoed arches, and delicate jali work. Don’t miss the sparkling Mirror Palace, covered floor-to-ceiling in thousands of reflective tiles, the hall becomes a dazzling fantasy with the light of a single match. The afternoon is free to explore more of Jaipur that you might have missed yesterday. This evening, meet your group and leader for a special cooking class in a local home for dinner. Leave the Pink City behind and travel by private vehicle to Agra. Along the way, stop at Chand Baori stepwell – built over 1000 years ago, this is one of the largest stepwells in India. The architectural wonder was once a gathering place for locals and royals alike. The series of narrow steps creates a beautiful pattern that leads to a body of water below. When you arrive in Agra, you’ll visit one of the finest forts in India – Agra Fort. Enter the dark red sandstone stronghold of the fort, part fortress, part palace and part prison, and search through throne rooms and tiny but incredibly decorated mosques. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you please. Maybe ask your leader for the best dinner spots for a local feed.

  • Abhaneri - Chand Baori stepwell
  • Agra - Agra Fort

Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours.

This morning is a real treat – bright and early, you’ll pay a visit to the spectacular Taj Mahal, one of the famed Seven Wonders of the World. Best known as a monument to love and loss, the 17th-century wonder is a beautiful example of Mughal architecture and is surrounded by trimmed English gardens. Take your time here, snap your bucket list photos and take in the majesty of one of the most famous buildings in the world. After, you’ll take an express train journey to Delhi. When you arrive, maybe head to the legendary Connaught Place for some souvenir shopping or take the chance to rest and recharge. This evening, maybe head out for a streetside chaat or ask your leader for the best spot for aloo kulche and chole (flatbread with a spiced mashed potato filling served with chickpea curry) with a side of pickles (and a mango lassi if the spice gets a bit much).

  • Agra - Taj Mahal

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

After breakfast this morning, your leader will take you to the city’s historic heart with a guided walking tour of Old Delhi. Visit the Jama Masjid – Delhi's oldest mosque and one of its most impressive buildings, then visit the Sheeshganj Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) to learn about the Sikh religion. After a jam-packed morning of sightseeing adventures, rest your feet and refuel over a lunch of local favourites. The rest of the day is free for further exploration – maybe wander around Humayun's Tomb, the first garden tomb in India built in 1570, if you haven’t already. Namaste! Welcome to Nepal. Arrive in Kathmandu and take your complimentary airport transfer to the hotel. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm where you'll meet your trip leader and fellow travellers. The evening is free to explore the streets of Kathmandu, whose mixture of ancient architecture and modern development, and rich artistic and cultural heritage means it remains the legendary destination it has been for decades. Crowded markets and bazaars are the centre of Nepali life, and the narrow streets are home to holy men, monks, bicycles, incense, goats, and sacred cows. You may like to join your leader and group for an optional dinner at one of Kathmandu's fine Nepali restaurants.

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days before travel.

Weather permitting, you'll have the option to take a Mount Everest scenic flight this morning. This experience will take you over Sagamartha National Park through a crescendo of the highest peaks in the world, getting up close to Mount Everest. After breakfast, you'll explore Kathmandu, visiting Pashupatinath, the most famous Hindu temple in the country, located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Here you'll see Hindu holy men (sadhus) meditating, pilgrims bathing and occasionally funeral pyres burning on the ghats. You'll also visit Bodhnath Stupa, one of the most significant Buddhist shrines in the world, where you can observe Buddhist monks in prayer in the monasteries surrounding the stupa. Your travel time today will be approximately 9-10 hours. We recommend to bring water for the travel and arm yourself with a little bit of patience as there might be some disruption on the road to Pokhara.

If you're an early riser, you'll have the option to wake up early and enjoy the sunrise over Sarangkot Hill this morning. Bandipur was once an essential stop for traders travelling to Tibet, and the town's single main street is still lined with buildings that once housed a wide variety of merchants. Many of the buildings have been converted now, but their architecture remains. Enjoy a peaceful stay in this charming, rural location.

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Enjoy a day of free time to explore Bandipur further. The surrounding hills are ideal for hiking along trails that will take you through tribal villages and hilltop shrines that once doubled as fortresses. A joint venture between Nepalese billionaire Binod Chaudhary ’s CG Hospitality and Tata Group’s Indian Hotels plans to expand their hotel footprint across the Indian subcontinent and the Himalayas amid a travel boom.

Through the partnership, CG Hospitality has invested over 12.5 billion rupees ($150 million) to develop 11 hotels under the Ekyam platform, which focuses on niche adventure and wildlife destinations, the partners said in a statement. Next year, 14 new hotels are slated to open under this platform, Rahul Chaudhary, managing director of CG Hospitality and son of the group’s founder, said.

Once the new hotels are completed, Ekyam will have a total of 2,500 rooms across 25 locations, including existing Taj resorts in Dubai, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

“This expansion underscores the confidence and trust we place in Indian Hotels’ century old legacy which is globally recognised as the benchmark in Indian hospitality,” Binod Chaudhary, founder and chairman of CG Corp Global said in the statement.

The partnership with Indian Hotels started when CG Hospitality invested in Taj Exotica Resort & Spa and Taj Coral Reef in Maldives and Taj Samudra in Colombo more than two decades ago. The tie-up has since expanded across five countries including Dubai, India and Nepal.

CG Hospitality owns hotels under other brands such as Fern Hotels in India, Jetwing Hotels & Ceylon Hotels Group in Sri Lanka, and Fairmont Hotels in Kenya. Nepal: Everest climbing season begins; China reopens Tibetan route

T raditionally, the inaugural ascent of Everest each year is undertaken by a team from one of Nepal's renowned expedition organising companies, tasked with the crucial responsibility of preparing the route for paying clients who will follow in their footsteps.

Chhang Dawa Sherpa, representing Seven Summit Treks, the leading expedition organiser, confirmed the triumphant moment, stating, "The rope-fixing team reached the summit this evening," as per the reports. The official statement from Nepal's tourism department, stationed at the Everest base camp, stated that the precise time the team reached the summit was 8:15 PM.

Anticipation swells among the mountaineering community, with Khim Lal Gautam, head of the base camp field office, remarking, "Other teams are already moving... many are at Camp 2 to catch the first window." A promising weather forecast extends hope, with expectations of a favourable climate until May 14, raising the prospect of witnessing an impressive tally of over a hundred summits during this period.

For the current spring climbing season, Nepal has granted a total of 414 permits to mountaineers, spanning from April to early June. With each climber typically accompanied by a Nepali guide, the more than 800 climbers will likely set out to the arduous path to the 8,849-m (29,032-foot) Everest summit in the ensuing weeks.

This year, the resumption of the Tibetan route to foreigners by China after its closure in 2020 due to the pandemic adds another dimension to the mountaineering landscape. Social media updates from expedition organizers confirm the opening of the northern summit route on Monday, expanding opportunities for climbers seeking alternative paths to conquer the iconic peak.

Nepal's allure as a premier mountaineering destination is also because of its status as the home to eight of the world's ten highest peaks. Annually, the country welcomes a multitude of adventurers during the spring season, enticed by the conducive temperatures and relatively tranquil winds, ideal for summit attempts.

However, amid the allure and triumph, Everest's formidable challenges always remain there. Last year's climbing season, despite witnessing over 600 successful summits, was marred by tragedy, marking the deadliest season on record with 18 fatalities. The surge in climbers over the years has transformed mountaineering into a lucrative industry, which was also because of the legacy of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, who climbed Everest in 1953 for the first time.

An electronic airport transit visa requirement has been introduced, starting15 April 2024, for citizens of 10 countries who will transit to Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela using Istanbul Airport. 1

WHY THIS MATTERS

Turkey, which is both a transit country and a destination country in terms of global “irregular” migration movements, is actively implementing measures to reinforce its fight against irregular migration. 2

With this obligation, irregular migration is expected to be prevented to some extent.

Passengers travelling from the afore-mentioned countries, from 15 April 2024, have new steps and procedures to complete in order to be in compliance.

More Details

Inspections within the framework of accepted international aviation rules have been increased due to the recent rise in the number of irregular immigrants heading to North America via various Central and Latin American countries, using transit airline opportunities via Turkey.

Turkish Airlines (THY) warned in March for passengers traveling to South American countries that "some additional checks may be applied in addition to the general rules such as passport and visa requirements for accepting passengers on flights." 3

According to information obtained from diplomatic sources, in this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has completed the necessary preparations to implement the electronic airport transit visa (e-HTV) application. 4

Citizens of Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, India, Mauritania, Nepal, Somalia, and Yemen who will travel to Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela, but transit through Istanbul Airport, as of 15 April 2024, must obtain an electronic airport transit visa.

Can Be Obtained via Internet Free-of-Charge

The electronic transit visa can be obtained free-of-charge online from the "evisa.gov.tr" portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as of 15 April 2024. 5  Passengers must correctly enter their personal information, accommodation address information, and ticket numbers when obtaining an electronic visa.

Passenger Practical Matters

Istanbul Airport transit passengers who are subject to an electronic transit visa are also expected to have print-outs of their transit visas with them.

Passengers subject to an electronic transit visa will be able to pass through security control and go to the departure floor after having their visas checked at one of the visa points located in both wings of the Istanbul Airport international transit passenger arrivals hall.
