When in Puerto Vallarta excursions are a must! Puerto Vallarta is a major touristy town from cruise ships docking at the marina, to thousands of people flying into Puerto Vallarta daily, it’s busy!

With the tourism comes some great Puerto Vallarta excursions . The excursions in Puerto Vallarta range from romantic cruises to epic jungle adventures, and day trips out at sea.

We’ve visited Puerto Vallarta for a holiday multiple times and have lived there, and we’re sharing all the great Puerto Vallarta excursions found both on land and at sea .

Puerto Vallarta Excursions on Land

Zip lining in the banderas bay jungle.

The first time I, Heather, visited Puerto Vallarta was on a cruise with my family. When we stopped in Puerto Vallarta, my sisters and I were all stoked to be doing a zip-lining excursion, and holy smokes, it didn’t disappoint!

More than ten years later, I still have vivid memories of zip lining across canyons, between trees, and feeling on top of the world as I flew over the treetops!

To this day, the Puerto Vallarta zip-lining tour is one of the best memories I have of doing tours while traveling! When looking through tours, be sure to check out what the zip-lining excursion includes ! Things to look out for are donkey rides, lots of hiking, and the number and distance of the zip lines you get to go on!

sun shining through tree tops

ATV Through the Jungle

This is a tour for the adventure junkies! Blazing on dirt roads and trails through the jungle above Puerto Vallarta is a thrill.

When looking at ATV tours in Puerto Vallarta , be sure to look at what is all included. Some tours are shorter than others, the places you visit on the ATVs are different, and some are paired with zip lining and repelling down waterfalls! So choose your ATV Puerto Vallarta excursion wisely !

Tequila Tasting in Puerto Vallarta

Tequila anyone!? With lots of distilleries in and around Banderas Bay, Tequila Tours in Puerto Vallarta are a hit.

Some offer the chance to visit multiple distilleries, while others are just a single one.

Something to watch out for when choosing a Tequila Tour is the duration of the tour. You don’t want to expect to go out for a few hours only to be gone an entire day!

There are also Tequila tasting tours paired with food tours just in the city, and they’re a huge hit on Get Your Guide !

Not all Tequila tours are made the same! This Finca 18 Tequila Tour is a tour of the actually distillery, and you get to taste FIVE different tequilas with an actual agave spirit master, one of twenty in the world !

Five different tequila bottles set out for a tequila tasting at Finca 18.

Check out these photos and a deeper dive into what else Finca 18 offers in this review post .

Taco or Street Food Tour

Okay, we get some people want to do a tour for tacos and street food so they know it’s the best of the best, but shoot — honestly, you can do this one on your own! In fact, we have an entire post about finding the best taco in Puerto Vallarta here.

Taco tours in Puerto Vallarta typically run around $50 USD and you get to enjoy tacos from multiple different taco stands and have a street churro too. If you get a good tour guide, you’ll also find that you learn a bit about Puerto Vallarta on top of enjoying many different tacos!

Mexican Food Tour

Just yesterday we were walking around Puerto Vallarta and came across people doing a food tour where they  learn to make homemade tortillas.  We also overheard that people were getting shots of tequila so that’s a great addition!

Taking a food tour is a great way to be able to bring a bit of Puerto Vallarta back home with you!

Puerto Vallarta Excursions Out to Sea

Rhythms of the night.

This is the perfect  romantic excursion in Puerto Vallarta.  Last time we were in Puerto Vallarta we did this for my sister’s birthday and had SO MUCH FUN!

We didn’t know what to expect on this tour, but came back just in awe of the show that we witnessed! The food was certainly not anything to write home about, but the show made the trip worth it!

Oh! And, it’s ” all-inclusive”  meaning you get all you can drink alcohol and the food is buffet style, so that’s all you can eat too!

For people  honeymooning in Puerto Vallarta , we strongly suggest taking the Rhythms of the Night Excursion (book it here) !

Deep Sea Fishing

Getting out in the bay and fishing? Yes, please! This is a fantastic tour for everyone in the family! We did this tour with our stepdad and brother-in-laws and had so much fun!

Unlike the Rhythms of the Night tour, multiple different agencies are running the deep sea fishing excursions out of Puerto Vallarta. We went with Charly’s Fishing Tours and had a fantastic time!

A few things to pay attention to when booking a fishing excursion  are,

  • How long you’re out at sea.
  • Do you get fresh ceviche with your catches of the day — this was a highlight on our fishing tour!
  • Are you guaranteed a certain number of fish, and what kind of fish are you going for?
  • Where does the tour take you?
  • How many guides / deckhands are on the boat with you?
  • Do they use devices to locate fish, or is it pure luck?

With Charly’s Fishing Charter, we really didn’t go out deep into the ocean. We wanted to go for Mahi-Mahi, but they wouldn’t take us out! However, we did catch SO MANY FISH! It was amazing.. and our guides made us fresh ceviche right on the boat with fish we just caught, taking the tour to a whole nother level.

With that said, upon returning to the marina, another family had got out fishing and between the six of them, they caught one fish and really didn’t have a good time. So, be sure to read the reviews before booking, and we can totally recommend Charly’s Fishing Tours for a good time!

Puerto Vallarta Snorkeling Excursions

Snorkeling is quite a popular Puerto Vallarta excursion. There are again many different companies offering snorkeling tours down the coastline. While you can pack your own snorkel gear and swim on your own, tours are a great way to get to experience multiple places in one day.

We saw many people on snorkeling tours in both Yelapa and Los Colomitos Beach . Both of those places we did our own day excursions from Puerto Vallarta, which you can read about below.

Pirate Party with Fireworks

Every night there’s a pirate party boat that cruises its guests around Banderas Bay. This boat is hard to miss from shore, as the music is loud, the twinkling lights are visible from anywhere on land, and the fireworks go off like clockwork every night at 8:45 PM.

This pirate cruise is for travelers looking for a party ! It offers unlimited alcohol, and is basically just a floating dance party at sea!

We’ve not done this excursion in Puerto Vallarta , however, we see the fireworks every night.

Hot Dog Tubing

Okay, I’ll admit it.. this is definitely not the actual name for this, but shoot — look at the photo, it totally looks like a hot dog !

These little inflatables get pulled behind a boat going back and forth up and down the coastline. It’s a simple little water excursion, but perfect for those looking for a short time on the water.

hot dog tubing trip on the ocean in Puerto Vallarta

While totally not an excursion, Jet Skis are a water activity that loads of people take in right from the beach.

Walking along the beach, you’ll find many places that have jet skis parked right in the sand . Likewise, both the Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta marinas have jet skis to rent. If you’re not looking to rent the jet skis in person, you can book them online in advance too .

Last summer, my family took out the jet skis, and they felt that 30 minutes on the water was more than enough time . If you have the option to book in person, it may be best, as taking on the jet skis on a day when the water isn’t too choppy would make this excursion much more enjoyable.

Whale Watching in the Winter

Whale watching is a great Puerto Vallata tour that’s only offered in the winter. This is because the whales migrate up the Pacific Coast from December – March, and you’re almost 100% guaranteed to see some whales during this time.

We saw a lot of whales right from the beaches of Puerto Vallarta and our accommodation too, but there’s something special about seeing them out while you’re on a boat. Keep in mind, you have the chance to see whales when doing fishing or snorkeling tours in Puerto Vallarta too, so you may want to double dip your tour and see them while out at sea!

Check out some of the most popular whale watching tours here .

A whales tale in the ocean during a fishing tour from Puerto Vallarta.

Parasailing From The Beach

If you’re afraid of heights, parasailing isn’t for you! But shoot, it’s a super fun experience if you’re up for an adventurous, yet relaxed Puerto Vallarta excursion !

The parasailing tours that leave off the beach in Puerto Vallarta, typically are only in the air for five minutes on the dot. We’ve timed them multiple times, so be sure to see how long you’re flying for! The online tours , state a ten minutes fly time, so it may be best to book online.

We’ve been parasailing where we got to sail with each other, which in my head is a totally different experience than flying solo, but either way, the views from above the bay are just brilliant !

Sunset Cruises Puerto Vallarta

Sunset cruises in Puerto Vallarta are an extremely popular excursion to do! However, they are spendy, and honestly a lot of the bad reviews kept us from going on one.

However, I’m sure they’re great. Some of them offer things like unlimited drinks and food, while others offer a romantic cruise for just you and your loved one.

Find the best sunset cruise in Puerto Vallarta for you here.

Booking Excursions in Puerto Vallarta

When planning to do an excursion in Puerto Vallarta , sometimes it’s best to just book ahead . That way you can take away the hassle of haggling with people on the beach, and you can have a trip to look forward to.

Likewise, if you’re on a strict time frame, having a pre-booked excursion will ensure you can actually do the excursion that you wish.

Puerto Vallarta Adventures offers a discount when booking multiple excursions , so it may be best to book with the same company if planning on doing more than one tour in Puerto Vallarta.

With that said, if you have the extra time and can go with the flow, it’s nice to not have everything booked out in advance because you can then wait for the weather to determine what you do, and once you arrive in Puerto Vallarta you may change your mind on what you want your vacation to be!

El Malecón El Malecón free

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you're hoping to book accommodations within walking distance of El Malecón, be selective when choosing a hotel or all-inclusive resort. Many properties are situated along the main pedestrian stretch, whereas some resorts require at least a 20-minute cab ride to get back and forth. – Holly D. Johnson

Stretching approximately 12 city blocks along Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), El Malecón is a great place to stroll any time of day, but especially in the evenings. Along the way, visitors will see everything from sand sculptures and bronze sculptures to the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe . El Malecón is also home to the open-air Los Arcos Amphitheater, another iconic symbol of Puerto Vallarta that plays host to free performances, featuring live musicians and traditional Mexican dance troupes, just about every night.

Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) free

This charming south side neighborhood is like a detached, unpretentious beach village that serves PV's more laid-back and less resort-conscious tourists. It's also the center of the city's thriving gay scene and has a bevy of gay beaches, bars and restaurants lining Olas Atlas. Travelers should keep in mind that this area is also known as Old Vallarta or Old Town.

Most agree that Zona Romantica is a must-see. The area contains a number of the city's best restaurants, excellent cultural opportunities and the most popular beach in the city: Los Muertos Beach. It's also home to a pier built in 2013 that offers seating for pedestrians and illuminates each evening with a kaleidoscope of colors. From the pier, travelers can board water taxis to some of the area's more secluded beaches. Recent travelers said you'll find a bunch of smaller grocery stores, restaurants and cafes away from the beach, as well as fewer peddlers selling souvenirs. Lázaro Cardenas Park (also known as Tile Park) is another popular stop here thanks to the colorful mosaics adorning the benches, columns and planters.

Bucerías Bucerías free

A great place to experience the joys of a resort town without the tourist-palooza that is Puerto Vallarta, the small fishing village of Bucerías is steadily becoming a popular day trip for PV vacationers. If you have the time to spare, take a bus to this beach hideaway up the coastline for an afternoon of fishing or swimming.

Recent visitors recommend spending Thursday evenings (November to April) doing the Bucerías Art Walk, a self-guided tour of more than a dozen galleries and arts boutiques. The Bucerias Bike and Food Tour is also highly rated because it visits several local eateries with a local guide leading the way. Beachside dining at places like Mar y Sol also comes highly recommended. If you're looking for a place off the tourist track, Bucerias is your secluded oasis.

Playa de los Muertos Playa de los Muertos free

The most popular shoreline in Puerto Vallarta, Playa de los Muertos (Deadmen's Beach) in the  Zona Romantica , offers opportunities to Jet Ski, windsurf and even parasail, as well as an assortment of excellent restaurants and bars. Try out some of the land sports as well, such as beach volleyball, which can be equally fun but cheaper than the water sports.

Travelers generally say that Playa de los Muertos is a nice area with plenty of space and a great spot for people-watching. Visitors also note that, unlike elsewhere in the Zona Romantica, beachside peddlers can be particularly aggressive when selling small items to tourists. A simple " no, gracias " should allow you to avoid any haggling. Because of the high concentration of gay-friendly accommodations along the southern shore, Playa de los Muertos is also considered a party haven for PV's LGBTQ travelers. A few travelers warned of the beach's strong current, advising parents with children to take extra precautions when swimming.

Puerto Vallarta Food Tours Puerto Vallarta Food Tours

If you're looking for a break from sunbathing and enjoying umbrella-garnished drinks on the beach, consider signing up for one of the best Puerto Vallarta food tours. While you can always head into town to try fresh local seafood, tacos and an array of Mexican desserts on your own, booking a tour with a company like Vallarta Food Tours , Vallarta Eats Food Tours  or ChocoMuseo can make the experience more festive and fun while paving the way to even more adventurous culinary options.

All foodie tours in Puerto Vallarta are led by savvy locals eager to share their expertise with curious visitors, and you may be surprised at the delicacies you can try. For example, Vallarta Food Tours offers downtown PV tasting tours that let you nosh on regional dishes like tacos, birria (meat stew), seafood and mole, but they also offer specialized tours geared to vegans or seafood lovers. There are also spirit-focused tours that allow participants to sample several different types of local tequila, mezcal or craft beer.

Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Tours Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Tours

U.S. News Insider Tip : Book a tour for one of the first days of your trip. Whale-watching tours in PV frequently get canceled due to choppy seas or lack of local whales. Booking early in your vacation gives you a chance to try another day if your first tour doesn't pan out.– Holly D. Johnson

Spotting a humpback whale as it crests the surface of the ocean is an awe-inspiring sight, and Puerto Vallarta is one of the best places to do just that. Whale watching season runs from early December through March, when humpback whales congregate in the sheltered, warm waters of Puerto Vallarta's Banderas Bay to have their babies. The peak of whale watching season is between January and February. And although you can bring your binoculars and look for whales from the shore – try the Malecón – your best chance for seeing them up close is aboard a tour operator's boat.

Yelapa Yelapa

For a break from the tourist crowds of Puerto Vallarta, head about 20 miles south to Yelapa. Considered by travel experts to be one of Mexico's few "undiscovered" beach towns, Yelapa is only reachable by boat, which is part of the reason why it sees relatively fewer travelers than other popular areas along Bahía de Banderas.

Many travelers come to Yelapa for its unspoiled beach, but if you're looking for a little more adventure, you won't be disappointed. There's a waterfall not too far from town that you can reach via a paved walking path. Recent visitors suggested swimming in the pool beneath the waterfall, praising the clean, refreshing waters. Because of the paved path and short hike, many said it was suitable for children. However, a few visitors were disappointed with the unimpressive size of the falls.

This beach is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its clean sand and clear water. Situated about 3 miles south of the Romantic Zone , Playa Palmares is Blue Flag certified, meaning it offers a high standard of cleanliness, safety, water quality and accessibility.

This beautiful beach just south of Puerto Vallarta makes for a lovely day trip, according to past visitors. Best accessed via water taxi, Playa Las Animas offers a stunning shoreline, calm waters and restaurants dishing out tasty food. Plus, recent visitors report that this stretch of sand is less crowded than other popular beaches like Playa de los Muertos (as long as you arrive in the morning).

When you're not sunbathing or enjoying a tropical drink, you can also rent a variety of water sports equipment, including kayaks, or sign up for a parasailing adventure or banana boat ride with one of the outfitters headquartered at the beach. This beach is also home to the Las Animas Beach Adventure Park, which offers zip lining, canopy tours and other adventure activities just steps from the ocean.

Vallarta Botanical Gardens Vallarta Botanical Gardens

To explore beyond Puerto Vallarta, you might want to try the popular Jardín Botánico Vallarta (Vallarta Botanical Gardens). The gardens feature an assortment of wildflowers, including orchids, and insect life that provides a relaxing and romantic getaway from the day-to-day hustle of Vallarta's downtown.

Some travelers expected to spend one or two hours walking around the gardens, but ended up staying the entire day since along with enjoying the magnificent plant life, you can also boulder the jungle's rocks and swim a section of the river. Some reviewers only recommend these activities for fit travelers. Also, be sure to buy a meal or, at the very least, a drink at the on-site restaurant, which comes highly recommended by both travelers and experts. If you plan to hike, you'll want to bring insect repellent (it's also available to purchase on-site) and consider wearing long sleeves and pants.

Los Arcos National Marine Park Los Arcos National Marine Park

Los Arcos National Marine Park is an iconic natural area that sits just 20 minutes south of the main square in downtown Puerto Vallarta. This park is protected from agricultural and developments and new construction, so it's become a haven for a range of bird species as well as sea life, including tropical fish.

Visitors here can take advantage of a range of adventure activities in and out of the water, including diving, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling and more. There are also guided tours you can book that include transportation and entry into the marine park, some of which include Jet Ski rides or snorkeling. Tickets for snorkeling tours start at about $50; Jet Ski tours start at about $145 per person.

Mirador de La Cruz Mirador de La Cruz free

Mirador de La Cruz is a lookout that offers spectacular views of the city of Puerto Vallarta and the Bay of Banderas. While frequently referred to as a "hike," visitors can get to this lookout with a walk uphill and a set of stairs. There is also a funicular that travelers can ride when it's working, but you may not want to plan on using it since it is often out of service (according to recent travelers). Either way, Mirador de La Cruz is popular among travelers in search of incredible views of the sunrise or the city's overwater sunsets, as well as those who want to stay active during their PV vacation.

Travelers say the trek to the lookout is well worth the time and effort, but that people in poor shape may find the uphill climb and stairs fairly strenuous. They also recommend bringing water, and note that there are restrooms you can use at the top (for a fee), so make sure to bring cash.

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Playa las Gemelas Playa las Gemelas free

Playa las Gemelas is a small shoreline located amid condo and beach rentals. Located about 10 miles south of central Puerto Vallarta, its cerulean waves and sandy shore are a nice place to break away from some of PV's more crowded beaches. Still, because Playa las Gemelas is relatively small, it can feel quite congested, especially on the weekends. To avoid the crowds, travelers should visit during the week and arrive in the morning to stake their spot in the sand. They should also pack their own supplies – drinks, snacks, sunscreen and towels – since there are very few vendors or shops nearby.

With its clear waters and sandy bottom, recent travelers liken Playa las Gemelas to a big swimming pool. They also say taking a cab or an Uber is the easiest way to reach the beach. Though the lack of vendors means you'll have to pack all your own supplies, you may find it more peaceful thanks to the lack of pushy vendors. However, keep in mind that there are no restroom facilities here, and visitors can’t access any of the amenities within the condo towers along the shore.

Las Caletas Beach Las Caletas Beach

Las Caletas is another beach in Puerto Vallarta that's away from the more touristy beaches found in and around downtown. While the beach itself is located about 20 minutes south of PV geographically, you can only get here via a guided boat tour booked through Vallarta Adventures , who controls access to the dock and private beach. The beach itself is known for its powder-white sands, clear waters and hammocks strewn throughout. Visitors who book this tour can enjoy activities like paddleboarding and kayaking, and they can also arrange encounters with monkeys and parrots.

Note that the beach tour itself is rather pricey at around $159 per adult and about $115 per child ages 4 to 11, although prices may be lower if you purchase your ticket online. However, the experience includes a gourmet lunch and open bar, along with the use of kayaking and snorkeling equipment, access to a Teen Adventure Cave and Kid's Adventure Park and more. The tour itself also has excellent reviews, with travelers raving about how much fun they had and the quality of the food and drink. However, some complained that their time there was too short and they wished they could have stayed longer for the cost (the experience lasts about seven hours in total).

Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe free

The silhouette of this church in downtown PV is one of the most defining images of the resort town and its chiming church bells are one of the most recognizable sounds. During the Feast of Guadalupe, held every year from Dec. 1 to Dec. 12, the church is a hub of activity. During the annual festival, there is plenty of music, dancing and street processionals.

Recent visitors suggest pausing during a Malecón stroll to admire the church's Renaissance-style tower. Others recommended stopping inside to see the gorgeous interior or attending Mass (English services are held Saturdays at 5 p.m. – a bilingual service is held every Sunday at 10 a.m.).

Islas Marietas and Hidden Beach Islas Marietas and Hidden Beach

The Marietas Islands are a collection of small, uninhabited islands off the coast of Riviera Nayarit. Punta Mita is the closest departure point for reaching the islands, but many Puerto Vallarta vacationers add the Marietas Islands to their itineraries given its close proximity (about an hour’s drive north). The islands are known for their incredible beaches, flora and fauna, and marine life, including sea turtles, tropical fish, dolphins and manta rays. However, the islands' "Hidden Beach" is what really attracts tourists thanks to its Instagram-worthy views and location that's tucked within the jungle on a remote island. When you search for photos of Hidden Beach, you can clearly see that it's completely surrounded by land. The water is only accessible during low tide as well, and you can only get there by snorkeling with a mask (but no flippers) when the tide is low. The best way to reach this natural wonder is via an organized boat tour .

Vallarta Adventures is a top-rated company that offers Hidden Beach guided tours as well as a full-day Marietas Islands Eco Discovery tour that goes to other islands, but not Hidden Beach. However, it's worth noting that some past visitors to Hidden Beach say they didn't get enough time on the beach itself (visits are limited to 15 to 20 minutes due to federal regulations). Others said the swim from the boat to the beach, which requires participants to swim beneath a rock arch, is treacherous due to strong currents, and may not be suited to those who aren’t capable swimmers. For many, spotting whales and other wildlife during the boat ride is the highlight.

Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures

Rhythms of the Night is a five-hour dinner show that is bookable through Vallarta Adventures. The show is advertised as a "feast for the senses" that begins with a sunset cruise from Puerto Vallarta to Las Caletas , where the dinner and show take place.

A candle-lit buffet meal commences once you arrive at the outdoor dining area, during which a range of singers, dancers and other performers entertain you with songs, fire dancing, acrobatics and more. Past travelers said that, while long, the Rhythms of the Night experience was worth it thanks to the high-quality dining and entertainment, which some compared to Cirque du Soleil. However, some travelers complained that part of the show took place before dinner, which caught them off guard and left them hungry until the formal meal began.

Isla Río Cuale Isla Río Cuale free

Isla Río Cuale is a mystery to many first-time Puerto Vallarta travelers. The fact that it's often difficult to find only adds to the enigma. In fact, Isla Río Cuale is almost in the heart of the city and is actually an island set upon an inlet of the Banderas Bay. To see the island, simply walk south from El Malecón until you reach a bridge that spans the river, and you'll discover the island, which is home to market stalls selling local wares.

Some visitors advised that there are the same trinkets on sale at Isla Rio Cuale as there are elsewhere in Puerto Vallarta, but they tend to be more expensive. Still, they admit that the locale has a great, car-free ambiance and is worth at least one visit during your time in PV. Isla Río Cuale is accessible free of charge.

15 Top-Rated Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta

Written by Meagan Drillinger Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Puerto Vallarta is one of those places that will stick with you forever. Unlike other beach destinations in the country that were built for tourism, Puerto Vallarta retains its roots as an authentic port town, packed with history, culture, and the heart of real Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta

Of course, this isn't to say that there aren't things to do for tourists in the city. It's one of Mexico's most popular vacation resort towns.

Much of the city's beauty has been restored and preserved, even as new hotels and resorts spring up year after year.

Puerto Vallarta is one of the only places in Mexico where mountains meet jungles meet sea. Its historic downtown, the Zona Romantica , is veined with cobblestone streets. Brilliant purple blossoms hang low over crisscrossing avenues, which add bursts of color to the whitewashed buildings that are capped with iconic terra-cotta roofs.

Puerto Vallarta is visually stunning. It's also got soul, with plenty of things to see and do at any time of day. It's a rare example of a city where locals jive with tourists and expats, creating a unique medley of international flair.

Are you ready to discover all that this city on the Bay of Banderas has to offer? Learn more about the best places to visit with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Puerto Vallarta.

1. The Malecon

2. zona romantica, 3. our lady of guadalupe parish, 4. puerto vallarta beaches, 5. bay of banderas, 6. mirador cerro de la cruz, 7. magic towns, 9. casa kimberly, 10. islas marietas, 11. day trip to sayulita, 12. vallarta botanical garden, 13. rhythms of the night, 14. versalles, 15. costalegre, where to stay in puerto vallarta for sightseeing, map of things to do in puerto vallarta, puerto vallarta, mexico - climate chart.

Puerto Vallarta's Malecon

If Puerto Vallarta could be boiled down to one snapshot, it would be its iconic Malecon. This mile-long walkway that hugs the coast takes visitors on a journey from Centro down to the Zona Romantica , or the historic district.

Along the way, travelers can take in the stunning views of the Bay of Banderas and jungle-covered mountains; see the beautiful red-tiled roofs of downtown; stroll past many of the hottest restaurants; and view the city's sculptures, beaches, and live street performances.

The Malecon is also closed to vehicle traffic, which means you can take your time as you stroll. It's also a perfect place to visit for a morning run. It ends at one of Puerto Vallarta's most famous beaches and the iconic sail-shaped pier.

At any time of day there is something happening along the Malecon, and it's the premiere spot where locals, tourists, and expats come together.

Address: Paseo Díaz Ordaz S/N, Centro, 48300 Puerto Vallarta, Jal.

Colorful buildings in the Zona Romantica

Take a step back in time and experience the very heart and soul of the original Puerto Vallarta. The Zona Romantica is the city's historic district, and is one of the most visually pleasing parts of the city.

Cobblestone streets and alleys are flanked with historic buildings, each capped with the trademark red-tile roofs. Purple bougainvillea blossoms arch over side streets, creating brilliant pops of color.

Zona Romantica

The Zona Romantica begins at the bridge over the Rio Cuale. Here, you will find the Old Farmers Market and some of the city's more popular beaches, restaurants, art galleries, and boutique hotels. It is also where the largest concentration of expats live, so you'll find it's very tourist-friendly.

The Pier is one of the most important attractions in this part of the city, from which you can grab a water taxi to many of the surrounding areas, or hire a boat tour to take you around the bay for an incredible view of the city from the water.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish

If you've seen the skyline of Puerto Vallarta, then you've surely seen the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, or the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. This icon of the city is known for its red-brick facade and the regal crown that sits perched atop its steeple.

Activity is always buzzing around the church and in the square directly in front of it. The bells ring every 30 and 15 minutes prior to each service.

From December 1 to 12, it's particularly frenetic around the square, as the city celebrates the Feast of Guadalupe. The city comes alive with parades, dancing, decorated floats, and music.

Address: Hidalgo 370, Proyecto escola, Centro, 48300 Puerto Vallarta, Jal.

Cinco de Diciembre neighborhood beach

Puerto Vallarta has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico . Unfortunately these beaches are not in the city. The city itself is fringed with shoreline, but these beaches tend to be incredibly crowded and packed with restaurants and activity.

For a more tranquil beach experience , your best bet is to get out of town – slightly. To the south of Puerto Vallarta are two important beaches: Playa Las Gemelas and Playa Mismaloya. Playa Las Gemelas is a discreet beach to the south of Puerto Vallarta on a stretch of sugary sand. It's a local beach, meaning you won't see many tourists here, but that's part of its magic.

Playa Mismaloya is in the next small beach town down from Puerto Vallarta, called Mismaloya. In fact, it was this beach that put Puerto Vallarta on the tourism map, as it was the scene of the 1964 film, Night of the Iguana , starring Richard Burton.

Aerial view of the Bay of Banderas

Puerto Vallarta thrives on its coastal location. Life revolves around the water, whether it's fishing, boating, or simply lying by the beach. One of the best ways to enjoy the city is to get out on the water. The Bay of Banderas, the body of water on which Puerto Vallarta sits, is one of the largest bays in the world .

It's teeming with wildlife, from hawksbill turtles and octopuses to whales, dolphins, and so many different kinds of fish. In fact, it's rare to be out on the bay and not have a dolphin or whale sighting.

Los Arcos National Marine Park in the Bay of Banderas

Several boat companies take visitors out on the water for an afternoon, whether it's cruising around the Los Arcos natural monument; visiting beaches only accessible by boat, like Yelapa or Las Animas; or a wildlife cruise.

View of Puerto Vallarta from the Cerro de la Cruz lookout

After you've seen Puerto Vallarta from the water, it's time to see it from the sky. Puerto Vallarta enjoys a unique location, nestled between the sea and the mountains. The city climbs back up into the green-carpeted hills, making for picture-perfect vantage points over the entire city.

One of the best (and best-kept secrets by locals) is the Cerro de la Cruz lookout . Perched high above Centro, this lookout point offers a bird's-eye view over the entire city, the bay, and north into Nuevo Vallarta and the hills of Punta Mita.

Climbing is not for the faint of heart, as it is a straight shot up, but the view is entirely worth it, as the red-roofed city unfolds before you. In high season, a funicular is available, which operates between 6am and 10pm. The climb lasts anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes depending on your level of fitness.

San Sebastian del Oeste

A few years ago, Mexico's Secretary of Tourism started bestowing the designation "Magic Town" to several towns in Mexico that had held on to their cultural heritage and charm. This title was given to towns that exemplify historic, authentic Mexico, and they can be found all over the country.

Near Puerto Vallarta are three Magic Towns that give a very different look into life in the state of Jalisco. The first is San Sebastian del Oeste . San Sebastian owes its history to the mining days of Mexico, which peaked during the colonial period. A trip here is a step back in time to the old mining days, with preserved churches, ranches, and even old mines. The mountain town is shrouded in lush trees and blanketed in fog, giving a completely different experience from the beaches of Puerto Vallarta.

The next is Talpa de Allende , which is a village veined with cobblestone streets and lined with brilliantly colored buildings. Visit the central church, which blossoms with bright purple bougainvilleas. The church is often the stopping point for pilgrims coming to pay homage.

Finally there is Mascota , which sits tucked among the tall pine and oak trees of the Sierra Madres. The fresh, mountainous town is known for the unfinished church, the Temple Inconcluso de la Preciosa Sangre, which sits at the center.

Yelapa

When it comes to beach destinations in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is one of the most popular. With that said, it means that it can often be difficult to find your own private stretch of sand. But that's where Yelapa comes in – one of the best-kept secrets in Puerto Vallarta and one of the most beloved hideaways for locals.

Yelapa is a quiet crescent of sandy beach just 20 miles south of Puerto Vallarta. What keeps it so low-key? You can only get here by boat. (You can do this from the Los Muertos pier, or by hiring a private charter from Boca de Tomatlan, another fishing village south of Puerto Vallarta).

You won't find chain restaurants or even mainstream hotels here. It's all about guesthouses, small hotels, and a handful of palapa-style beach restaurants. Airbnb is alive and well here, though, which can be an attractive option if you want to cook your own meals.

Keep in mind that supermarkets are non-existent, so it's all about what you can score at the local "market." But more often than not, people hole up at the beach restaurants for deliciously fresh food, minus the price tags from Puerto Vallarta.

The water is a shimmery turquoise-green, which pops against the golden sand and jungle-backed hillside. If you are looking for an escape from your escape, Yelapa is certainly the place to visit.

Casa Kimberly

When Richard Burton came to Puerto Vallarta to star in John Huston's film, he fell in love with the city, and decided to have a house here for himself.

But that wasn't enough. He was in the throes of a tumultuous and scandalous relationship with Elizabeth Taylor and arranged for her to stay in a casita across the street from his, known as Casa Kimberly . Burton had a bridge built between the two casitas, over the street, as a way for the lovers to visit each other without having to wade through the flow of paparazzi.

In 2010, the villa opened as a luxurious boutique hotel, with its nine rooms decorated in the style that Taylor and Burton would have been familiar with. A pink marble, heart-shaped tub, the central pool, and the bridge have all been restored. The hotel's nine suites are decked out with sparkling chandeliers, luxurious bathrooms, wide patios, and private plunge pools, all overlooking the roofs of the city.

The restaurant, The Iguana , is one of the best in the city and has a killer view, to boot.

Address: Calle Zaragoza 445, Centro, 48300 Puerto Vallarta, Jal.

Hidden Beach, Islas Marietas

Wildlife abounds in this government-protected natural area. Islas Marietas is a group of uninhabited islands that sit out in the Bay of Banderas off the coast of Puerto Vallarta and the neighboring state, Nayarit. The islands are protected from human access to preserve the native and rare wildlife species that live here.

When it comes to visiting the islands, many options exist. Visitors can book a tour with a local tour operator, like Vallarta Adventures, which can arrange everything from snorkeling the islands to kayaking or paddleboarding around them. It's also a popular site for scuba diving.

One of the best parts of Islas Marietas is the hidden beach that lives inside one of the islands. When the tide is just right, swimmers can swim through a narrow channel and emerge into an open-air cave that has a quiet, pristine beach, hidden from public view. It's one of the more magical ways to experience Puerto Vallarta.

Restaurants along Calle Delfines in Sayulita

Technically not in Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita is just over the border in the state of Nayarit, but makes a perfect (and common) day trip from Puerto Vallarta. The bohemian surf town used to be sleepy and geared toward backpackers and surfers. But recent discovery has morphed it into a veritable cultural gem all its own.

Today, Sayulita offers tourists plenty of things to do and is packed with small restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries.

Stay away in high season, like around Easter and New Year's, when the shores are teeming with tourists. But during the week and in shoulder season, you can still find the fishing village charm that Sayulita old timers still remember wistfully.

While up in Sayulita, it is also worth a trip to the beach town next door – San Pancho. This town is a pretty good idea of what Sayulita used to be like before it exploded on the tourist trail. San Pancho is still a small collection of delightful restaurants and artisan boutiques, with a beautiful beachfront that is arguably more impressive than Sayulita's.

Pond in the Vallarta Botanical Garden

Escape the fray of Puerto Vallarta's downtown with an excursion to the Jardin Botanico de Vallarta (Vallarta Botanical Garden). Here, you will find a wide assortment of brilliantly colored wildflowers, including one of the most-visited public collections of orchids in Mexico.

Discover plants like cacao, agave, vanilla, cacti, and magnolias, as well. It's also possible to see parrots and different species of hummingbirds. It's much more than gardens that you'll find here - discover hiking trails, a restaurant, and even a section of river that visitors can swim in.

Address: Carretera Puerto Vallarta, Carr. Costera a Barra de Navidad Km 24, 48425 Jal.

Rhythms of the Night dancer

Even the most seasoned Puerto Vallarta traveler cannot deny the impressiveness of Rhythms of the Night. Consistently considered one of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta, this mystifying evening performance is all about acrobatics, surprises, and an evening under the stars.

The experience begins with a boat ride out to Las Caletas, a beach that is privately owned by tour company Vallarta Adventures. After landing at the beach towards sunset, guests dine on a buffet-style dinner overlooking the bay, surrounded by the flicker of hundreds of torch lamps.

After dinner, the experience continues with a walk along densely covered jungle paths to a tucked away amphitheater that sits underneath a blanket of stars. Here is where the magic really gets going when a Cirque du Soleil-style acrobat show explodes from all corners of the stage. It's an evening sure to be packed with "oohs" and "aahs," and will undoubtedly be one of the most unique experiences you will have in Puerto Vallarta.

While most of the excitement in Puerto Vallarta is happening in Centro or the Zona Romantica, another neighborhood is rising in the ranks and will soon be one of the top spots in the city. This is the Versalles neighborhood, which is just south of the Hotel Zone, opposite Playa Las Glorias.

This once predominantly residential neighborhood has been blossoming over the last few years with the opening of trendy restaurants, luxury condos, and artisan boutiques. It's still a relatively under-the-radar neighborhood when it comes to tourism, but this is what makes it so special and unique.

Step into the local pace in Versalles, as the majority of people you'll find here actually live in the neighborhood. Restaurants are consistently opening, showing off the skills of rising culinary stars in Puerto Vallarta.

Though the neighborhood itself is not directly on the beach, it is a short distance to the Las Glorias neighborhood, which does have a lovely beach. Versalles is quiet, safe, affordable, and one of the best ways to get to know another side of Puerto Vallarta.

Coastline in Barra de Navidad, Mexico

One of the best side trips to take from Puerto Vallarta is a drive down the Costalegre. This spectacular stretch of coastline runs south from Puerto Vallarta to the city of Manzanillo in the neighboring state of Colima. For hundreds of kilometers, this wild and rugged shoreline gives way to dramatic cliffs, rolling mountains, and a crashing Pacific surf.

Along the way down the coast, travelers can stop into small fishing villages or check into some of the most luxurious hotels in the state . These palatial paradises are all about blending into the natural environment, getting in touch with spirituality and nature, and enjoying the spectacular views.

Things are changing along the Costalegre, though, as more and more luxury hotels are eyeing the prized real estate. For now, the coast is among the most pristine and untouched in Mexico. In fact, nearly 30,000 acres of the coastline is part of a protected area, ensuring that it says as true to nature as possible.

Whether you're taking off from Puerto Vallarta on a day trip, or looking for a fun weekend to get out of town, the Costalegre is packed with untouched gems just waiting to be discovered.

Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta

1. arriving: puerto vallarta airport tips.

Getting to Puerto Vallarta is easy as there’s an international airport ( Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz ) with daily flights to many cities in North America.

It’s not a big airport, so it doesn’t take long to get through once you arrive, especially if you’ve already cleared customs in another city in Mexico.

In fact, when I arrived in Puerto Vallarta, it only took me 15 minutes from the time the plane landed to collect my bags and get out of the airport.

The airport is conveniently located just 15 minutes from the city center, and there are several options for getting there.

Once you’ve got your luggage, you can either grab a taxi right outside the main airport doors (many people will ask you if you need one), take a public bus, or get an Uber.

And if you need to connect, there is free Wi-Fi in the airport.

Knowing important travel tips for Puerto Vallarta will help you plan the perfect trip to Mexico

Ubers are about half the price of a taxi, but they do not come to the airport terminal doors; you will have to walk five minutes.

When you exit the airport, turn left (walk to the end of the building), and turn left again. You will see a pedestrian bridge across the street. Walk across the bridge and catch an Uber from over there as this is the only place they pick you up. It should cost about $5-10 to get from the airport to most accommodations.

Alternatively, you can take a public bus. The station is right under the pedestrian bridge on the same side as the airport.

There are several busses that go into the various neighborhoods of Puerto Vallarta , which will be marked on the front of the bus.

If you aren’t sure, you can always ask the bus driver by saying the name of the area you are going to. The bus costs 50 cents.

2. US Travel To Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a popular destination for travelers from the United States due to its close proximity, warm weather, amazing atmosphere, and an international airport that makes it easy to get to and from.

As a US citizen, you will automatically be given a six-month visa on arrival, making it a great place to work remotely if you want to extend your stay. In fact, it’s a popular place for creators to stay when trying to start a travel blog and make money .

There are direct flights from dozens of popular cities in the U.S. including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco.

American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest all fly there as well as several other international airlines.

3. Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta Safety

Safety is always a concern for visitors traveling to Mexico, but Puerto Vallarta is actually one of the safest destinations in the country.

Millions of tourists visit Puerto Vallarta every year with no problems. I’ve lived here for three months as a solo female traveler and have never felt scared or in danger.

This being said, I do have a few safety tips for Puerto Vallarta to share:

Like any city, petty theft does happen so you should be vigilant when walking with your belongings, especially at night.

Keep your phone or attractive electronics away when you’re wandering the cobblestone streets, and don’t leave them unattended at the beach. You might also invest in some pickpocket-proof garments to more easily avoid pickpockets .

Moreover, always protect yourself with travel insurance , as theft can happen anywhere.

As a solo female traveler, I try to avoid walking at night no matter where I am. Instead, I get Ubers — which are very affordable in Puerto Vallarta.

The Malecon , a beach boardwalk in the center of Puerto Vallarta, is safe to walk alone at night as it is always full of people and police.

During Covid-19, Puerto Vallarta received the Safe Travels Stamp from the World Travel & Tourism Council, which recognizes the ongoing implementation of strict safety measures in destinations around the world.

4. Travel Insurance For Puerto Vallarta

Here is one of the most important tips for travelers to Mexico :

When visiting Puerto Vallarta — or anywhere else in the world — it’s important to get travel insurance. If we’ve learned anything in the last year, it’s that the unexpected can and does happen.

While there are many providers out there, one of the best travel medical insurance for travelers is SafetyWing as they’ve got a large network and offer both short-term and long-term coverage — including coverage if you’re traveling for months as well as limited coverage in your home country.

Additionally, SafetyWing is budget-friendly and offers $250,000 worth of coverage with just one low overall deductible of $250.

5. Puerto Vallarta Weather

One of the top travel tips for Puerto Vallarta is to see the sunset

Puerto Vallarta has warm weather year-round, making it a perfect beach destination for those looking to escape the cold winters in the northern hemisphere.

Temperatures never get colder than 72°F, so you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful beaches and ocean no matter what time of year you visit!

June is the hottest month of the year and the start of the rainy season which goes until October.

The rain typically only happens for a few hours in the afternoon or in the evening so you’ll still get lots of beach time even if you visit during the summer.

6. When To Visit Puerto Vallarta

Exploring the beaches of Puerto Vallarta

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta depends on your tolerance for heat and crowds. October to April is the high season which coincides with the most pleasant (driest) weather and whale-watching season.

Since this is right after the rainy season, it’s also ideal for hiking as there will be lush green scenery and full waterfalls. In fact, the destination offers some of the most beautiful hikes in the world , with this being the best time to take in local scenery at its most stunning.

The downside of visiting during the high season is that this is when you’ll find the biggest crowds and the highest prices on accommodation.

The weather starts to become what many would consider unpleasantly hot in June, so avoid traveling to Puerto Vallarta then then if you don’t like the heat.

Additionally, the summer coincides with the rainy season but can be a great time to get deals on accommodation and tours.

You could also time your trip to Puerto Vallarta to attend one of the city’s many events like Pride month in May or Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in early November.

7. What To Know About Puerto Vallarta Travel

Exploring El Centro while traveling to Puerto Vallarta

Now, there are a few things to know about Puerto Vallarta before traveling.

When planning a trip to Mexico , you’ll be happy to know that the country has some of the most relaxed entry protocols anywhere in the world during COVID-19 — so if you’re wondering “Can I travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico” the answer is very likely “yes!”.

You do not need a test to enter the country, although I always recommend it.

Infection rates are declining on the whole in Mexico, and in Puerto Vallarta, there are few restrictions.

At the time of writing, everything is open, there is no curfew, and for the most part, life feels normal here. You must wear a mask inside establishments, and some places take your temperature before entering.

Moreover, Puerto Vallarta is extremely welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. Zona Romantica is the gay neighborhood, and it’s filled with rainbow flags and gay clubs. There are lots of events for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially during Pride at the end of May.

You do not need to know Spanish to travel around Puerto Vallarta, but it’s always helpful to know a few key phrases like hello ( hola ), thank you ( gracias ), and how are you ( cómo estás? ).

This being said, don’t be nervous if you can’t speak Spanish; most locals speak English and are used to travelers who do not know Spanish.

8. Puerto Vallarta Hotels

There’s no shortage of amazing hotels to stay at in Puerto Vallarta. Whether you’re looking for an all-inclusive family resort or an LGBTQ+ friendly hotel, you’ll be able to find it in Puerto Vallarta.

The biggest resorts and hotels tend to be concentrated in the north and south neighborhoods of the city where you’ll find nicer beaches.

If you want to stay in a resort, some good areas are Conchas Chinas , the North Hotel Zone , and Marina Vallarta . These places are known for having some really great all-inclusive Mexico resorts as well as delicious vegan-friendly Mexico resorts .

Conchas Chinas is one of the best areas to stay in Puerto Vallarta

If you prefer to stay in the heart of the city then book your accommodation in 5 de Diciembre , El Centro , or Zona Romantica .

From these neighborhoods, you’ll be able to walk to The Malecon where you can find restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. You won’t find as many all-inclusive resorts here but there are plenty of boutique hotels and cute Airbnbs to choose from.

In reality, it doesn’t really matter which part of the city you stay in, as getting around is easy.

And to help you easily find great places to stay, here are a few resources:

9. Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is not a huge city which makes it easy to get around.

In terms of the best way to travel in Puerto Vallarta , if you stay in Centro or Zona Romantica, you’ll be able to walk to bars, restaurants, and the beach easily.

Visiting Los Muertos Pier is one of the top things to do in Puerto Vallarta

Even if you stay in one of the neighborhoods a little further out like Conchas Chinas, you can still get around Puerto Vallarta cheaply by using the bus or ride-sharing apps.

There are buses that run all over the city and only cost 50 cents to get on.

Alternatively, you can take an Uber or inDriver (a local car ride app). A 20-minute Uber across town costs around $2.50-$5 depending on demand.

There are also taxis readily available on populated streets, but these are typically more expensive. Always remember to negotiate the price beforehand if you get a taxi!

Of course, you can also rent a car. While it’s not really necessary to have a car if you’re staying in and exploring Puerto Vallarta thanks to the many budget-friendly public transportation options, some travelers like to rent one if they’re doing a lot of day trips to traveling to other places in Mexico.

One recommendation:

Use Discover Cars to quickly compare your car rental options.

10. Puerto Vallarta Restaurants

No list of Puerto Vallarta travel tips would be complete without talking about the food.

Mexico is world-famous for its cuisine, and Puerto Vallarta is no exception to this.

Given that the city is right by the ocean, you can enjoy excellent quality seafood here with Mexican flavor. Some of the top restaurants are:

  • Mezcal y Sal
  • Barcelona Tapas
  • The Blue Shrimp

Mezcal y Sal offers some of the best cheap eats in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The street food is also amazing here, so don’t be afraid to try it. There are taco stands on almost every corner where you can enjoy a filling meal for just a couple of dollars.

In terms of Puerto Vallarta money tips , this is a great way to save if you’re traveling on a budget.

Puerto Vallarta also has plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants to choose from. Check out Vegan Ramen , the Green Place , and Salud Super Food for healthy veggie-friendly options.

11. Things To Do In Puerto Vallarta

Although Puerto Vallarta is a city, one of the best things about it is the quick access to the ocean and mountains, making it a perfect place to go on outdoor adventures .

Some of the most popular things to do here include whale watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, or simply relaxing by the beach and enjoying the gorgeous sunsets.

For the best diving, head to Los Arcos National Marine Park .

Los Arcos Marine Park Mexico is one of the top attractions in Puerto Vallarta

There are also a lot of hiking trails to explore around the city. One of my favorites is Los Arcos which leaves from Boca de Tomatlán to Las Animas Beach .

It takes two hours, passing by secluded beaches along the way you can stop and enjoy.

From Las Animas, you can grab a water taxi back to the city.

No Puerto Vallarta visitor's guide would be complete without mentioning Colomitos Beach

Another popular walk within the city is to the Mirador La Cruz del Cerro , an observation deck with some of the best views of the city.

Within the city, there are many fun things to do too.

Walking along The Malecon is the perfect way to spend an afternoon or evening just people watching and exploring the many restaurants and shops of Puerto Vallarta.

You can join a paid food or drink tour, and there are also free city walking tours and art walks that happen every Wednesday.

Additionally, Puerto Vallarta has lively nightlife with clubs that go into the early hours of the morning. Salsa dancing is very popular here!

12. Tours In Puerto Vallarta

Speaking of tours in Puerto Vallarta, here are some highly-rated ones to check out:

  • 🍹 Food and Mixology Tour: Tequila, Tacos, and Mexican Cocktails
  • ⛰️ Sierra Madre ATV Adventure from Puerto Vallarta
  • 🐒 Puerto Vallarta Outdoor Adventure Zip Line and Speedboat Ride
  • 🐠 Yelapa Waterfall & Majahuitas Snorkeling Tour from Puerto Vallarta
  • ⛵ Day Sailing on Banderas Bay

13. Day Trips From Puerto Vallarta

San Pancho in Mexico should be listed in every travel guide to Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is an excellent base to explore surrounding places as fun day trips .

Sayulita and San Pancho are two up-and-coming beach towns in Mexico popular for surfing. Sayulita is notorious for its nightlife, and San Pancho is more relaxed.

From Boca de Tomatlán — which is a half an hour drive from Puerto Vallarta — you can get a taxi boat to many secluded beaches and small towns along the coast.

Yelapa is one of the most popular places to visit. This laid-back beach town is only accessible by boat or hiking trail, and there you can find many waterfalls to explore.

There’s also the charming mountain town of San Sebastian , an hour and a half drive away. It’s a great place to go hiking and cool off from the heat.

San Sebastian is one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta

14. Solo Travel In Puerto Vallarta

Going on a vacation to Puerto Vallarta on your own? You’ll be happy to know that the city is one of the top solo female travel destinations for many.

It’s easy to make friends in Puerto Vallarta as a solo traveler. I found an amazing group of friends within two days of moving here that I’ve loved getting to know.

Staying at hostels is always a good way to meet people, but if you prefer to stay at an Airbnb or hotel, it’s still easy to meet other travelers.

Facebook groups are one of the most popular ways to connect with other travelers in Puerto Vallarta. Here are some of the best ones:

  • Puerto Vallarta: Everything You Need Or Want to Know  (big, general group for asking questions about anything)
  • Puerto Vallarta Digital Nomads  (coworking meet-ups and events)
  • Puerto Vallarta Gays  (LGBTQ+ information, meet-ups, and tips)
  • Young & Fun Xpats  (social meet-ups for people 20-40 years old)

I hope these tips could help you plan an amazing trip to Puerto Vallarta!

While the city is touristy, there’s a reason its so popular and I’ve fallen in love with it over the last few months. If you’re looking for a fun place to explore for your next vacation, Puerto Vallarta is a great choice!

What travel tips for Puerto Vallarta would you add to the list?

How to Visit Puerto Vallarta on a Budget (12 Pro Travel Tips)

alex gomez mexico travel buddy

About the author

Alex Gomez, the founder of Mexico Travel Buddy, combines his firsthand, on-the-ground experiences in Mexico with a personal connection to the country, fostered through his Mexican wife and numerous explorations. More info

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most sought-after destinations in Mexico. However, it can be expensive to visit, especially if you don’t budget carefully. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to enjoy PV without breaking the bank.

Having traveled to Vallarta several times, I know it’s possible. From finding affordable accommodation to discovering cheap places to eat, you can experience the city’s many attractions without spending a fortune. With some careful planning and preparation, you can enjoy an unforgettable trip to Puerto Vallarta on a budget.

How to Visit Puerto Vallarta on a Budget

Visit during the low season.

Low-season weather in the mid-afternoon—a cyclone forming over the ocean.

When planning your budget trip to Puerto Vallarta you should consider traveling during the low season (July – September). Booking a ticket for the low season can save you over $300 per person compared to traveling during the high season (December – April).

I know what you’re thinking, why is the low season so much cheaper?

To be honest, it’s cheaper because it’s hot. In August, the high averages around 90 degrees with 92% humidity. Now compare that to January when the average high is 80 degrees with 90% humidity.

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Although the humidity is comparable on paper, the extra 10 degrees during the summer season really intensifies the humidity. So not only is it hot but it’s extremely moist. Expect to be walking around dripping if you visit during the high season.

Also, the rainy season begins in July with August being the rainiest month of the year, averaging over 9 inches of rain in total. In my experience, the rain usually begins in the evening and continues throughout the night. That means you can still enjoy your day.

Split your room fare with a travel buddy

Me and my wife standing on the beach in Puerto Vallarta.

If you’re traveling with others, you should really consider booking a room together. This will reduce the overall cost of your accommodation, especially if you can split the booking fee between 3 or more people.

There are numerous Airbnbs located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta that offer 2 or more bedrooms and bathrooms. If you don’t mind sharing the kitchen and living room, then splitting the room fare will save you a ton of money.

The average 2-bedroom Airbnb near the center of the city and all the main attractions costs roughly $50 to $180 per night. So if you can split this cost between 4 people, each person only pays $13 to $45 per night. I’d say that’s a pretty good deal.

Book a cheap Airbnb

A rooftop view from our Airbnb in Puerto Vallarta.

If you aren’t traveling with a group of people, no worries. There are still plenty of Airbnbs that offer affordable rates for a smaller room. You might even be lucky enough to find an affordable room on the boardwalk for under $50 per night, but you have to book months in advance.

That said, if you’re willing to stay either slightly north near 5 De Diciembre or slightly south in the Romantic Zone, you will find more affordable rooms. And trust me, both of these locations are within walking distance of central PV.

And if you don’t want to walk, then the local bus will take you anywhere you need to go for only 10 pesos.

Stay in a hostel

Staying in a hostel can be a great way to save money. Hostels are much cheaper than hotels, and they offer many of the same amenities. Plus, they’re great if you’re traveling solo, as they provide an easy way to meet other travelers and explore the city with a group.

Most hostels will have bunk beds, shared bathrooms, and common areas for socializing with other travelers. Also, many hostels also have on-site restaurants, allowing you to save money on meals, as well as offering access to convenient amenities like laundry, Wi-Fi, and even swimming pools.

You shouldn’t have any trouble finding one in the city as there are over 25 different hostels to choose from. Hostel Vallarta is a popular example of an inexpensive place to stay that’s only one block away from the ocean. And it only costs $25 to $35 per night.

Get pesos at a local exchange house

When it comes to buying things in PV, you should really consider exchanging your native currency for pesos as you’ll spend less money and get better deals. Although there are several options to get pesos , I highly recommend using a local exchange house to get the best rate.

Getting pesos at a local exchange house can help you save money in a few different ways.

Firstly, local exchange houses often offer more competitive exchange rates compared to banks or other exchange services such as the one at the airport (please don’t exchange your money at the airport).

See also: How to Tip In Puerto Vallarta (Proper Tipping Etiquette)

Not only that, but they provide a more convenient service compared to banks, which is nice if you’re in a hurry.

Local exchange houses often charge lower fees and commissions compared to banks or other exchange services. This means you can save even more money on your exchange rate, which can be especially beneficial if you need to make a large transaction.

In my experience, local exchange houses often provide better customer service as well. The employers are generally more patient, helpful, and willing to work with you compared to the banks.

As far as safety is concerned, many exchange houses will have armed security guards standing nearby. At least, this makes me feel a little safer.

Buy your food and drinks at the grocery store

My favorite "budget" energy drink Vive100 in PV, Mexico.

Just like in the states, buying your snacks and beverages at the grocery store is often cheaper than going out, especially if you want alcohol.

Fortunately, Puerto Vallarta has several options to satisfy your shopping needs. There’s a Walmart up north if you want the best deals and something that feels “close to home”, or there are multiple Soriana Markets located all across the city.

If you’re just looking for a quick snack and a drink, there’s either an OXXO or Kiosko on nearly every corner that has a variety of essentials at a fair price.

When I lived in Vallarta, I walked down to Kiosko every other day to re-up on my energy drinks (don’t judge me).

Eat at local restaurants

Eating french toast at Coco's Kitchen in Puerto Vallarta.

Don’t get me wrong, I realize that you’re on vacation. If you don’t want to go to the supermarket to buy ingredients to prep your own meals, then there are dozens of hole-in-the-wall restaurants that serve the most mouth-watering food for outrageously cheap prices.

Some of my favorite spots include El Campanario and Lonchería Don Jorge near downtown PV, and Mi Pueblito on Av. Francisco Medina Ascencio, if you’re staying further up north.

Seriously, this is some of the best food you’ll have, and it only costs $5 to $10 for an entire meal and a large drink. And trust me, I’ve got a big appetite. All these spots are sure to fill you up, even on a budget.

Walk everywhere you go

Walking through the neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta.

Undoubtedly, the transportation system in Puerto Vallarta is robust. That said, depending on where you want to go, you can explore the entire city entirely on foot. That’s right. Literally, everything is within walking distance.

Of course, if you don’t like walking, I don’t recommend it. But if you don’t mind, it’s not only free, it’s also the best way to get to know the city.

I never would have found all the local eateries if I hadn’t walked miles all around the town. Albeit it can be extremely hot, especially if you’re there during the summer months. But what do you expect? It’s Mexico baby!

My wife and I walked nearly 6 miles from downtown PV to near where we were staying, up north. Sure it took 2 hours, and it was hot, but it’s really not that bad if you have good company.

Nonetheless, make sure to travel light and wear appropriate clothing including a hat and sunglasses, and carry water with you everywhere you go. If you aren’t a huge fan of water, I recommend purchasing an Electrolyte at OXXO or any market for that matter.

Take the bus for longer trips

If you aren’t absolutely insane like me and don’t want to walk 6 miles, I don’t blame you (cough* wimp). All jokes aside, the bus will take you wherever you need to go for only 10 pesos, which is about 50 cents depending on the exchange rate.

A fair warning though, the buses don’t have air conditioning and they can get really crowded at times. It’s not uncommon that you might have to stand the entire ride, or at least until you can snatch a seat from someone who gets off.

Personally, I don’t mind standing as it lets my armpits breathe a bit more, but sitting isn’t bad as long as you crack a window. Considering the number of buses all going to different places, you really have to pay attention to which one you’re getting on.

Oftentimes the bus will have a sign on its windshield with a list of common stops it makes (ie Walmart, Sam’s Club, Centro, etc.,). If it doesn’t have a hand-written sign, then it’ll have an electric sign above the windshield.

You have to be quick to hop on, otherwise, they’ll leave you behind. With that, don’t be afraid to wave them down as they approach. Sometimes if they don’t see anyone trying to stop them, they’ll drive right on by.

Here’s a nice bus route that can help you figure out where you’re going.

Ask for discounts

If you don’t ask, you’ll never know. Sometimes the best way to save money is to simply ask for a discount. This can work anywhere: restaurants, local shops, taxi cabs—it never hurts to ask.

If you’re lucky, maybe 10% of the places will give you some sort of discount or “special” deal. Of course, maybe it’s not really that special, but at least it’s cheaper than what you would have paid if you hadn’t asked.

If it’s someone’s birthday, you can also get special deals. Many of the restaurants will give you and your group a free round of shots or even a free appetizer if you tell them it’s your birthday.

Obviously, make sure it’s really your birthday. However, they have never asked to see proof when I’ve experienced this. And no, I didn’t lie, it really was my dad’s birthday and he was with me.

Bargain for a lower price

One of the local markets in Puerto Vallarta next to the river.

The good ol’ bargain game. This is one of my favorite things to do shopping when browsing the local markets for souvenirs. A few things about bargaining.

  • They expect you to bargain. That’s why the prices are so high, to begin with!
  • Don’t feel bad trying to get a better price, especially if you’re on a budget.
  • Go to different shops in the market to compare prices. You’ll have to bargain at each one to see who offers you the best deal.
  • Combine items to get a better deal. First, bargain one item low as possible, then ask how much it’d be if you add in something else you want.
  • Pay in pesos. Always pay in pesos if you want to avoid getting a poor exchange rate.
  • If you speak Spanish, that’s a huge bonus! Especially if you look like you don’t speak it (it’s just the truth). Even if you aren’t fluent, just learn to say, “how much”, and “I can give you this much”. They appreciate it when you try to speak their language.

Enjoy the numerous free activities

Me standing at the beach in southern Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta is packed full of adventure-filled excursions and explorations. However, many of these activities will cost $50 to over $150. If you’re like me and you don’t have the means to fork over extra money to do these activities, don’t!

You don’t need to. PV has an abundance of activities you can enjoy for free . In fact, there’s so much to see that you can fill an entire week’s stay full of activities you don’t have to pay a dime for!

At the very most, you’ll have to pay for a bus if you don’t want to walk. But besides that, the city is full of adventurous hikes, beautiful beaches, and shows you can enjoy free of charge.

So, if you are hesitant to travel to Vallarta because you can’t afford all the fancy excursions, forget about it. You can have your own excursions!

Ultimately, visiting Puerto Vallarta on a budget is possible, and with a bit of planning, you can make the most of your trip and create lasting memories.

By booking your stay during the low season, finding cheap accommodations, taking advantage of free attractions, and exploring the local cuisine, you can create your own exciting and affordable itinerary.

14 Unique Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta with Itineraries (+ hidden gems and secret spots) for 2024

Share with your friends!

Opportunities for day trips from Puerto Vallarta are endless – whether you want undisturbed beaches, sleepy fishing villages, mountain adventures, hiking, hidden beaches or historic towns, you have so many options.

While there aren’t any ruins near Puerto Vallarta (you’ll have to visit the Yucatan for that), the whole coast is surrounded by ocean bays, beaches and the Sierra Madre mountains, providing endless possibilities for fun and adventure.

These ideas are perfect for people looking for:

A day off the beach or resort

Things to do on a cruise ship stop

Getting off the beaten path

Some new things if you feel like you’ve done all the regular day trip stuff!

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

By the way – the tours, ideas and itineraries on this list are things you can actually do.

For instance, the tourist town of Tequila is often mentioned as a great day trip, but it’s well over 4 hours away, so probably not a place that you’re going to visit if you only have a week in Puerto Vallarta.

So, here are some of the best excursions and places to see near Puerto Vallarta on a day trip.

( This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click through and make a purchase I may make a small commission. I only share information about things I know, love and trust! )

1. Hot Springs at Nuevo Ixtlan Aguas Termales

Watch the full video tour!

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Yes, there are hot springs you can visit near Puerto Vallarta, less than a couple hours away making for a perfect day trip.

You will head inland, closer to the Sierra Madre mountains (read – stunning scenery)!

The hot springs known as Nuevo Ixtlan are natural , but the owners have created about a dozen stone tubs (of different sizes) where the natural thermal water is piped into.

The water stays at about 25 degrees celsius, so it’s pleasant to visit all year round.

Now, unless you know the area and have a high clearance vehicle, I recommend you book a tour.

Tip – Book this tour through Viator like we did

It includes transportation , visiting a local market, a soak in the hot springs, a fresh BBQ lunch and a massage on the beach after a full day of adventure. Wow!!

P.S. – there’s more than just these hot springs in the area, check out this full guide to the 8 best hot springs and waterfalls near Puerto Vallarta .

2. Swim in a Natural Saltwater Pool

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Try something different and head north into the Riviera Nayarit to explore some beautiful beaches that are mostly known only by local surfers.

Your final destination is a spot called Alberca de mar at Punta Mita. It’s a natural pool in the ocean !

This trip is for the adventurous. It’s perfect if you’re looking to leave the busier pace of Puerto Vallarta or if you feel like a fun day off the resort.

You’ll be heading north towards Punta Mita.

Find your way to the untouched Burros Beach (here’s a google marker ).

Follow a short hike through the jungle to the next beach, which is the left side of the Grand Palladium Resort.

This is where a natural, saltwater pool is located for you to swim and lounge in.

Of course, the easiest way to find it is by staying at the Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa !

3. Botanical Gardens, River Swimming and Tequila Distilleries

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Instead of a day trip to the town of Tequila (which is 4 hours from Puerto Vallarta), head to the tequila distilleries down by the Botanical Gardens near Mismaloya.

Make an entire day out of it by strolling through the botanical gardens for a couple of hours admiring the orchids, cacti, cacoa plants and coffee trees.

Then swim in the river onsite, have lunch and explore the several tequila distilleries in the area.

You can either do this on your own by book a tour.

We booked this tour through Viator and loved every moment.

Pro tip – I find it very useful to know some conversational Spanish when I’m on holiday in Mexico. Rocket Languages is my favorite program to learn Spanish. Try it out here for a free 7-day trial .

Knowing a few phrases in Spanish has helped us get better deals, find great hidden gems and avoided being ripped off multiple times!

4. Take a Water Taxi in the Quaint Fishing Village of Yelapa

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Spend a whole day in Yelapa, a laid back village only accessible by boat .

No cars here, but you’ll see plenty of horses. Many folks describe Yelapa like Puerto Vallarta was in the 1970s.

To get here, take an orange bus heading to Boca de Tomatlan. The best spot to catch it from is the southern end of the romantic zone, and it should be about 30 pesos.

Inside tip – sit on the right side of the bus to enjoy the view and scenery.

Once you’re in Boca, grab a water taxi – negotiate the price before you get on the boat (should be about 200 pesos).

The boat ride itself is quite the experience – it’s about 30 minutes.

If you’re visiting in the right season, you might be able to spot whales (drivers are always watching and will point them out).

Choose to get off at the second boat stop which is the Yelapa town centre (the first stop is the beach).

Tip – first check the boat return times so you can plan when you need to be back by.

Walk around the charming little fishing village and find somewhere to eat.

Then, follow the path that takes you behind all the houses that will lead you towards a waterfall hike .

There are vendors along the way, so you can always ask them to make sure you know where to go.

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Enjoy the beautiful views and swim in at the base of the waterfall.

On your way back, hit the beach and look for the pie lady !

Playa Isabel is the beach to visit if you want shallow and more swimmable water.

Make it easy by booking a day trip !

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel, arrange the boat ride, lead you through the jungle to the waterfall, recommend best places for lunch and show you around Yelapa and its best beaches.

For added off the beaten path fun from Puerto Vallarta, I recommend strolling through the winding roads up through the hills and checking out the authentic restaurants and bars.

Need a cool place to stay in Yelapa?

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Chances are you’ll fall in love with this laid back spot and won’t want to leave (or maybe you missed the last water taxi??)

I recommend Casa Coco a beautiful home with the most perfect sun-filled terrace overlooking the ocean .

From here you can also access the Cathedral Waterfall (about an hour hike), which is the bigger and better waterfall that most tourists miss.

5. Ancient Petroglyphs in the Middle of the Jungle

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

On this day trip , you will head to Altavista to visit a sacred archeological site known as Pila del Rey.

On your guided hike through the jungle, you will come to a natural pool surrounded by smooth large rocks covered in ancient signs and symbols that were carved thousands of years ago.

Get off the beaten track and immerse yourself in the incredible history of the Indigenous people of this region.

6. The Old Town of Mascota, Jalisco

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Travel higher up in the mountains to the historical town of Mascota, a charming place found among the Sierra Madre mountains.

On your way there, stop at a raicilla and tequila distillery, then arrive in town and tour the ancient churches, petroglyphs and old cobblestone streets .

You’ll also visit the scenic spot called Yerbabuena, a lagoon plaza.

This tour includes stops at Mascota and Talpa de Allende – both are Pueblos Magicos or ‘magic villages.’

This tour includes hotel pickup and breakfast and lunch.

While you can rent a car and drive yourself, the road is tricky to navigate and having a driver allows you to enjoy the stunning scenery along the way.

7. San Sebastián del Oeste

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Step back in time to the 1700s by walking through the narrow, historic streets of San Sebastián del Oeste , probably one of the best non-beach things to do outside of Puerto Vallarta .

Stroll through the romantic, narrow streets in this jewel of a town nestled within the mountains.

On your way, stop at the bridge for great photos and pick up something yummy at the bakery.

Visit La Quinta for organic coffee and a tour of the plantation behind the storefront, go for a tasting at the Don Lalin tequila distillery for their unique flavors – like pomegranate tequila.

Check out the gold and silver mines and have an amazing lunch or dinner at the Italian restaurant, Montebello.

There’s also a scenic spot called La Bufa higher up in the hills, where you can either hike up or drive for an amazing lookout.

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

I suggest a guided tour to visit San Sebastián del Oeste, as your guide will take care of all the driving and share the fascinating history of the area and stories of the families who live there.

I recommend this tour , where you guide will tell you all about the small villages you pass through, take you to many of the places noted above.

If you’re visiting Puerto Vallarta on a day trip from a cruise, book this private tour who will pick you up at the port and tour you around the 17th-century mountain town of San San Sebastian del Oeste.

Cute Coastal Communities

8. surfing in sayulita and san pancho.

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Sayulita is a hip little surfer town, but there’s a lot more to it than that.

If you like trendy vibes and think of busyness as more of an energetic vibe, then Sayulita is the place for you.

I think it’s totally worth going up to Sayulita for a day trip, even if you don’t surf.

My guide to fun things to do in Sayulita on a day trip has tons of ideas for you.

But if you do want to try it, there are plenty of instructors who will work with you for a one-hour private lesson – and it’s so much fun!

a girl wearing a pink and black bathing suit surfing on a turquoise surf board

But, it’s also fun to explore the colorful streets and visit the cute boutique shops.

Suggestion – Maybe some of your group wants to surf and others don’t? Book a hike & yoga session !

You’ll enjoy a tranquil hike through the jungle that leads you to a quiet beach where you instructor will guide you through a practice as you listen to the gentle waves.

Then, find a spot on the beach, order yourself a passion fruit margarita and watch everyone else surf!

There are some world class restaurants here (especially if you’re vegan), so definitely stick around for dinner.

And whether you come here to surf or not, you should go find the hidden beach , a 10-minute stroll passed a picturesque cemetery to your own personal, perfectly clear water oasis.

On the other side of Sayulita (north) if you want to keep exploring, a little further is Las Cuevas beach and then Mal Paso.

Have something to eat at Don Pedro on the beach, especially if you love ahi tuna – you’ll know where to find it, it’s usually the busiest place but for a reason!

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

The best place to stay in Sayulita is the Hotel Peix , it’s a small boutique hotel right on the beach in a perfect central location.

Even if you don’t stay overnight, you can still be served from their beach lounge chairs and they have the best rooftop bar.

Or check out my full guide to the best places to stay in Sayulita .

Alternatively, you could visit San Pancho, less than 15 minutes north of Sayulita, for a more chill experience.

If you want a similar beach and a few shops and restaurants, San Pancho is basically a low-key version of Sayulita.

9. Sunday Market hopping in Bucerias and La Cruz

Sunday is market day and if you love farmer’s markets , you will love the ones in Bucerias and La Cruz.

La Cruz is well known for being the best in the area.

The food is great and there are many unique, hand-made items here that aren’t normally found in all the other touristy shops.

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

La Cruz is about 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta.

And of course, you might as well visit a perfect beach while you’re here – Destiladeras Beach is just north of town.

It’s super quiet and one of the nicest beaches around, plus the water is very clear and shallow.

Find some beach chairs to rent where staff will serve you food and drinks.

Between La Cruz and Puerto Vallarta is Bucerias, a charming community with a great blend of locals and expats.

If you want a massage on the beach , come to Bucerias where it’s much cheaper.

Stroll through the colorful streets and on a self-guided ‘instagrammable spots’ tour.

Then park yourselves at Karen’s on the beach for happy hour!

Or, plan a half-day cultural tour where you get to meet local families and artisans who will share their stories, show you their way of life and cook you lunch!

Read more about visiting Bucerias here .

10. Outdoor Adventures at the Canopy River

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Enjoy a fiesta in the mountains as they call it! Come here to walk or ride an ATV across the Jorullo Bridge – the longest suspension bridge in the world that can support vehicles.

Ride the zipline through the jungle over the Cuale river.

And if you need some liquid courage to help you get across the suspension bridge…there’s plenty of margaritas and beer at the restaurant.

Or enjoy a great meal at the restaurant afterwards.

Book the highest rated tour on Tripadvisor which includes the Jorulla bridge, zip line, mule riding through the jungle and then tequila tasting at their mountaintop bar, which also has an infinity pool to lounge in!

11. Speedboat Ride and Zipline into a Tequila Bar Tour

This tour is the perfect day trip for cruise ship passengers.

On the Los Veranos Canopy Tour, you can enjoy a speedboat ride and soar above the Sierra Madre foothills on a network of 15 zip lines, with the last one ending at a tequila bar!

Then make sure you’ve got your swimsuit because right from the bar, you can take the natural waterslides into the calm river pools to cool off.

12. Visit Mayto and Tehuamixtle – Off the Beaten Path Beaches

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

About two hours south of Puerto Vallarta are Mayto and Tehualmixtle beaches – they are pristine and make for a fun and relaxing day trip that’s off the beaten tourist path.

These beaches are long and wide and visited by very few, making it a great way to find open space to relax and distance from others.

At Mayto, you can visit the Campamento Tortuguero to help release baby turtles into the ocean!

And if you want calm water to swim in, Tehuamixtle is the beach you want to visit.

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

Grab this tour that will take you by boat to several hidden beaches (including Mayto and  Tehuamixtle) as well as a stop at the botanical gardens.

You’ll have a chance to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. In this day and age with all the health concerns, I recommend bringing your own gear.

I like this full face mask and snorkel , a total game changer!

Plus, there are some ultra romantic hotels here if you’re looking for a getaway that’s a little more slower paced and secluded – try Hotel Mayto .

13. Hacienda Tour on Horseback with Tequila Tasting

puerto vallarta excursions reddit

For something a little different to do just outside of Puerto Vallarta, try horseback riding through the fo othills of the Sierra Madre mountains.

You’ll ride to a traditional Hacienda. where you’ll get a tour of the beautiful property and countryside, enjoy a traditional Mexican lunch and taste the different tequilas that are made from the agave plants grown on site.

Oh, and bring your bathing suit as you’ll pass by a river and a natural hot spring for a quick dip!

Book this awesome tour with Carlos!

14. Cycle Along the Coastline to Punta de Mita

If you’ve been laying on the beach or by the pool and are in need of a little exercise and sightseeing at the same time, this tour is for you.

You will cycle about 40 miles on a gorgeous route through the hills, have lunch and admire beautiful Punta de Mita and then head back to PV. Bikes are provided!

Book your tour here (plan for about 4-5 hours).

>> Staying at an all-inclusive resort? Here’s a Packing List (17 things you should always bring)

I hope you’ll find that most of these day trip ideas are a fresh perspective. You might be wondering why there are some popular day tours not included on this list.

Visiting Marietas Island (the hidden beach) is one of them.

I visited a few years ago and it was honestly overrated. There were way too many people and the beach itself was underwhelming – one of those places where the photos were way nicer than the experience.

I’ve heard they have since restricted the number of people who can visit at a time, so it’s nice to see some responsible tourism practices going on.

Instead, I’ve curated some more unique ideas that can be done on your own (if you have a car or want to take the bust) or with a local tour guide in a small group for a more personal experience.

In my opinion, it’s these types of trips that always turn out the best!
