Drawing from their T Bone Burnett -produced LP Raising Sand and 2021’s chart-topping Raise The Roof , Plant and Krauss will deliver a cosmic collision of early blues, country deep cuts, revolutionary folk-rock and lost soul music written by legends and unsung heroes like Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, The Everly Brothers, Anne Briggs, Geeshie Wiley, Bert Jansch, Ola Belle Reed, Brenda Burns and more, as well as reimagined renditions of Led Zeppelin cuts like “The Battle of Evermore,” “Rock & Roll,” “When The Levee Breaks” and other surprises in store.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss want to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value. To make this possible, if fans purchase tickets for a show through Ticketmaster and can’t attend, they’ll have the option to resell them to other fans at the original price paid using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange. To help protect the Exchange, the artists have also chosen to make tickets for this tour mobile only and restricted from transfer. This applies to all shows ticketed by Ticketmaster. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on Their 2024 Tour, ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ Retirement, and Much More

By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss aren’t ready to stop singing together just yet. “We’ve been doing this on and off since 2007,” says Krauss, “and it’s just gotten better every time we’ve gotten together.” So after touring for the past two years behind their second collaborative album, 2021’s Raise the Roof , they’re adding 28 tour dates this year, beginning in June. Krauss and Plant gave Rolling Stone for their only interview about the new tour, explaining why they just can’t quit each other, discussing future plans, breaking down their set list, and much more. Some highlights follow, and you can hear the entire conversation on the latest episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast — go  here  for the podcast provider of your choice, listen on  Apple Podcasts  or  Spotify , or just press play below.

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Alison Krauss:  It’s felt great. I’m really glad that we’ve been able to revisit this as many times as we have. The band has more room, and I get a little more consistency with what’s happening when it’s time for me to jump in and sing harmony. And I thought, “Oh, it’ll be too long in between …” But it’s amazing how quickly the months go by before we go out again. I’m really looking forward to doing it again.

Alison, when you mentioned a little more consistency, I know that was always kind of an issue. Robert sings with a lot of freedom and improvisation, so it was always a challenge to harmonize. How are those things changing to make it easier? Krauss: Oh, I don’t know if they’re changing [laughs] . It’s just that I can catch a little bit more of his phrasing when he looks my way.  He’s always very funny, because he’s like, “Don’t worry about it!” He goes, “It’s the same. It’s the same every time.” And i’m like, “It’s never the same!” So, you know, I gotta hang on for dear life.

Plant: I don’t notice any of that!

Of course not. Krauss: [Laughs] He doesn’t notice.

I’ve learned a lot, and those moments are hair-raising. It’s great to be learning and be contrite and humble and come into your dressing room bowing and saying “Can you just explain the last harmony to me again?”

Krauss: It’s not quite like that!

Bob dylan and willie nelson unite for epic 'outlaw' summer tour, robert plant squashes his 16-year beef with ‘stairway to heaven’.

What have the two of you both been up to since July, when the last dates ended? Krauss: I’ve been in the studio recording. And that’s a tedious process. Plant: I’ve got a group of friends that I play with over here a little bit from time to time. I’ve also been going through all that stuff that I never released and never quite got finished. And getting excited about it. Going, “Wow. What am I going to do with that?” It’s the idioms, the visitation, the places that I’ve been musically which were not complete are just mind-boggling, and they’re a little bit overwhelming.

Are you writing new songs as well, Robert? Plant: I’ve got a Tascam digital recorder, and I sing, and I put the vocals through a guitar pedal, and then I record them on that over there, and it sounds great. Why bother to go to the studio? But I can’t find words. This is a very difficult time to try and wax lyrical out there.

I love that. Alison, in your genre, it’s taken for granted that people will stay onstage until, basically, they can’t stand up anymore, even beyond. You’re quite young still, but I’m sure that you’ve always taken it for granted that you’re going to be doing this if you can when you’re 80 or 90. Krauss: You never know how you’re going to feel, and you never know when you’re going to feel different. With this music, I think so many people started so young, and they toured so much. It’s all they knew. It’s hard to say, what I’m going to feel when when I get older.

Robert, there’s people of your generation retiring. Do you think about retirement? You seem to love being on the road, so do you want to just push it as long as you can push it? Plant: The camaraderie, the things that you share up there, and the frailties that you know you’re carrying with you quietly, the exposure of yourself to yourself, is something that I would hate to say goodbye to. I can’t just sit back. Out there in the real world, people say to me, “What about the book?” And I say, “Are you kidding? What? This is spectacular. Why think about it twice?” This is today. What happened in Schenectady in 1969 is another story. And for me, the continuum must keep going. Today, I was pulling all my lyric books out and going, “Gotta get the groove back. I’ve got something to say.” So yeah, I’m going to keep going — as long as they’ve got effects machines that make me sound good [laughs] . Well, it worked for Elvis! Listen to the compression on his voice on some of those big ballads in ’57.

Robert, you sang “Stairway to Heaven” for the first time in many years at a charity event last year. What did that feel like? Plant: It was cathartic. People go, “Oh, that’s good. He never was going to do that.” But I didn’t really do it! I just blurted it out. ‘Cause it’s such an important song to me for where I was at the time and where I was with Jimmy and with John and Bonzo. So on that night, it was what it was. It was a trial by fire, but I felt better at the end than at the beginning.

Finally, you have these 30 or so dates, and you have your own careers. What are your hopes for the future of this collaboration? Plant: I really hope that we pull a cat out of the bag again.

Krauss: We have had such a great time making those records and touring that I’d love to see it happen again, too. I feel like we’ve made something new when we recorded together. The whole thing has been a surprise for me. And I know it was for Robert too, although he seems to have more bravery in this department.

"These are songs that have gone into our hearts way back in time, but got lost in the twists and curves of the passing years," says Robert Plant. "You hear them and you go 'Man, listen to that song, we got to sing that song!' It's a vacation, really--the perfect place to go that you least expected to find."

In 2007, Plant and Alison Krauss released Raising Sand, one of the most acclaimed albums of the 21st Century. It was an unlikely, mesmerizing pairing of one of rock's greatest frontmen with one of country music's finest and most honored artists, produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett. It entered the Billboard 200 at Number Two and was certified platinum, and it won six Grammy awards, including both Album and Record of the Year.

After fourteen years, the two icons reunited with Raise the Roof. Earning three 2023 Grammy nominations and unanimous acclaim, these dozen songs have extended this remarkable collaboration in thrilling new directions - from performances on the illustrious stages of Bonnaroo, Forest Hills Stadium, Glastonbury, the Greek Theatre, Red Rocks and far beyond, to appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, CBS Mornings, PBS NewsHour, CMT Crossroads and more, to 2024's Can't Let Go Tour, which will see the duo once again return to North America for nearly 40 dates this spring and summer.

With Raise the Roof, Plant and Krauss were determined not to simply replicate a formula. "We wanted it to move," says Krauss. "We brought other people in, other personalities within the band and coming back together again in the studio brought a new intimacy to the harmonies."

The duo's intention had always been to continue the momentum of Raising Sand. "There was so much enthusiasm, excitement and adrenaline that it would have been folly if we didn't keep going," says Plant. "We did join up and consider songs, try to work out some ideas, but then somebody would ask if I'd want to take my band to the Arctic Circle--'OK, I'll do that, call you back, Alison!' And then she goes off and gets another Grammy. We've both constantly made new recordings.

"I knew what we could share. In the length of time that I've been making records, this is very rewarding, but a very unusual place to find myself."

In fact, the two singers were stockpiling ideas for songs they might do together, and passing selections back and forth, during the intervening years. "I've heard Lucinda Williams sing 'Can't Let Go' forever, and I sent that to Robert at least ten years ago," says Krauss. "I remember riding around listening to it and thinking it would be so much fun to do together."

Plant had his eyes on a couple of R&B deep cuts. "The Betty Harris song 'Trouble With My Lover' was always in the air," he says. "To hear Alison sing that is such a great way of her turning her gift around. And Bobby Moore's 'Searching for My Love' is something I used to sing at school, another nugget of beautiful lost soul music which has been ricocheting between us for a long time."

When they were finally able to reconvene in Nashville in late 2019, Plant admits that it was "kind of daunting." After all, when they first met up, there were no expectations; "When we started, Robert had said that if it didn't work, we'll try it for three days and say goodbye," says Krauss. But this time, they not only had to clear the bar of their own magnificent careers, they also had the success of Raising Sand to contend with. Once they got rolling, though, Krauss says the recordings felt "very natural, very easy--and really fun."

For his part, Plant wanted to introduce a musical tradition that was part of his own culture. "I've been a big follower of Bert Jansch's work since I was a teenager," he says, "and of that whole Irish, Scottish, English folk style that has a different lilt and different lyrical perspective. I was very keen to bring some of that into the picture."

"One of my favorite parts of this is the songs and songwriters that I had never heard of " says Krauss, noting that in addition to the inclusion of Jansch's "It Don't Bother Me," she feels the "peak of the record" comes with "Go Your Way" by English folk singer Anne Briggs. "Working with Robert, and with T Bone, is always a great education in musical history."

The material on the album encompasses compositions by writers as diverse as Merle Haggard ("Going Where the Lonely Go") and the mysterious blueswoman Geeshie Wiley ("Last Kind Words Blues")--and even a Plant-Burnett original, "High and Lonesome"--in arrangements even more evocative, spare, and hypnotic than those on Raising Sand. In addition to the core band of ace musicians assembled by Burnett, including drummer Jay Bellerose and guitarist Marc Ribot on all tracks, there are appearances from such guests as David Hidalgo from Los Lobos, jazz wizard Bill Frisell, and the eternal Buddy Miller.

Both Plant and Krauss point to the recording of "Quattro (World Drifts In)," a song by the beloved Americana band Calexico, as a turning point in the Raise the Roof sessions. "When I heard the song for the first time, it came in the group of songs Robert sent me as possibilities he liked as ideas for us to record," says Krauss. "I thought, 'Oh gosh, here we go'--hearing that song was the moment I knew we'd make another album."

"It's time to think about walking on the stage again and having that feeling of being just a little bit nervous," says Plant. "And that's really the thing that we both live for--that walk from the side of the stage to the microphone. That's the longest journey, because it lasts a lifetime."

The accomplishments of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, of course, are immeasurable. But with Raise the Roof, they take the next step in a project that offers them creative rewards unlike anything else. "There's so much romance in contrast," says Krauss.

"It's such a far cry from everything I've done before," says Plant. "I love the whole kaleidoscope of music that I've explored, but this is a place where you can think within the song, you can decide how to bring home an emotion. It's another blend that we've got, and long may we have more of them."

Two brilliant artists who somehow make each other even better! Hooray Alison and Robert! Down side - the beer "selection"at Budweiser Stage is terrible. The "craft"beer on offer is from the once-proud Mill Street brewing, but since it has been taken over by a corporate monolith, their products have been decontented and cheapened. I had one of their Cool IPAs at the show, which tasted like someone had soaked the cheapest ju jubes available in some Bud Light. It was absolutely terrible. I'd buy beer at the venue (which would help the venue make even more money) but if this is the best they will offer, I'll stick to water and eat and drink someplace else. Final rating: concert: 5 stars; drink selection at venue: 0 stars, and I'd go lower if I could.

Living Legend!

It has always been on my bucket list to see Robert Plant and I finally got my chance ..WOW he was just awesome and so down to earth. Alison was a real compliment to the Led Zep tunes. My teenage dream has now been fulfilled!!!!

Spectacular

Concert of the year!!! Both Allison & Robert were on point.

fabulous evening of beautiful melodic music

What a fabulous evening of beautiful melodic music 🎶! The night air was warm and filled with the hauntingly harmonious voices of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Such a perfect duo delivering a memorable blend of old and new music! The band, which included guitarist, JD McPherson from Tulsa, OK and Alison’s brother Viktor Krauss; were some of the industry’s very best musicians! Such a special performance! The Zeppelin tunes were so beautifully reconstructed with a haunting essence woven throughout! So very different from the first time I saw Robert Plant perform in 1977 on the Led Zeppelin United States of America tour in Cleveland at the Richfield Coliseum. 46 years ago! Oh my! Where has the time gone?!? What I wouldn’t give to go back in time and re-live that moment!!

One for the books!!

Wow!! Just wow!! One of my favorite concerts. So so happy that my husband, whom is a big Led Zeppelin fan, agreed to go. We have been enjoying Alison and Roberts albums for a few years now. So glad to see them preform live. And the venue, no bad seat. Thank you for an amazing date night!

A tad disappointed

Felt rushed. Both Robert and Alison were great but it started late ~around 1 hour worth of performance... Felt underwhelmed.

One Of a Kind

The first time i heard about Robert Plant , Led Zeppelin, loved the music right away and today i still love his gender of music . It was a wonderful concert he still has it believe me! His voice with Alisson voice and the music and lyrics , it was worth the trip to Toronto.

Wonderful evening of great music

Robert Plant still has it!! Allison Krauss sound great along with Mr.Plant. Loved the remixed Zepplin songs. Well done.xoxo

Plant / Krauss concert Budweiser stage

I knew it was going to good but exceeded my expectations , awesome !

Great music, a little short

Music was great, Plant can still sing. Combo of Plant and Krauss was great. Surprised to hear 3 Zeppelin songs in the set. Just wish it was longer. They did about a 1 hour and 15 minute set, then a 2 song encore, so under 1.5 hrs all together.

Mystery Revealed: Robert Plant Has Created a Led Zeppelin Mashup

by Matt Friedlander May 11, 2024, 7:20 am

Official details have been revealed about the recently reported mysterious Led Zeppelin-related studio project on which Robert Plant was working.

Videos by American Songwriter

Plant has teamed up with producer Gavin Monaghan to create a track mashing up the Led Zeppelin classics “Whole Lotta Love” and “Kashmir” that will be played at the Wolverhampton Wolves soccer club’s home games as the teams walk onto the field before kickoff at Molineux Stadium.

Plant is a lifelong fan of Wolverhampton, who are officially called the Wanderers and also are known as the Old Gold. In addition, he’s been a vice president of the club since 2009.

The new “Whole Lotta Love”/“Kashmir” mix will get its public premiere this Saturday, May 11, when Wolverhampton takes on Crystal Palace at Molineux Stadium. Plant will be in attendance for the track’s debut.

Before Plant helped create the new mashup, Wolverhampton already had been playing “Kashmir” and other Led Zeppelin songs at matches for years.

Wolves Executive Thanks Plant for Creating the Track

“Having Robert as a member of the old gold pack is incredibly special,” said Wolves marketing executive Russell Jones in a statement. “[A]nd having now used ‘Kashmir’ for more than a year at Molineux, Robert was keen to help us move the sound on by mixing two of Led Zeppelin’s most iconic tracks.”

Jones added, “We’d like to thank both Robert and Gavin for their support and I hope that the new mix will get the stadium rocking ahead of the last game of the season.”

You can check out a video featuring footage of Plant and Monaghan working on the mix at the Wolves’ official YouTube channel and social media pages.

About Monaghan

The mix was created at Monaghan’s Magic Garden Studio in Wolverhampton. Monaghan twice won the Producer of the Year honor at the Birmingham Music Awards. His credits include working with Celine Dion and Grace Jones, as well as contributing music to the soundtracks of the TV series Peaky Blinders , the Twilight films, and Austin Powers .

Deleted Social Media Posts Initially Teased Info About the Track

News of Plant’s Led Zeppelin remix session was first teased in a series of now-deleted social media posts from Monaghan and his romantic partner and musical collaborator Antonella Gambotto-Burke, as well as from Magic Garden Studio engineer Liam Radburn.

Meanwhile, Plant has a variety of upcoming 2024 tour dates on his schedule. First up, he’ll launch a U.S. headlining tour with acclaimed folk/bluegrass artist Alison Krauss that’s mapped out from June 6 to June 19.

Then, on June 21, Plant and Krauss will join Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour for a series of stateside performances running through July 7.
