[ Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 10, “Hegemony.”]

Great Scott! In this week’s season finale of Strange New Worlds , Star Trek ’s most beloved miracle worker finally arrives aboard the USS Enterprise. During a rescue mission on the border of the Gorn Hegemony, Captain Pike and his crew encounter the lone survivor of another Starfleet vessel, the talented and loquacious Lt. Junior Grade Montgomery Scott, who joins the effort to save a group of human colonists from an ongoing massacre.

Scotty’s debut on the show (the earliest TV appearance in the character’s personal chronology) was an unadvertised surprise, but not a total shock, as Strange New Worlds used its previous season finale to unveil Paul Wesley as the new James Kirk . What makes young Scotty a particularly sweet treat, however, is that for the first time, he’s being performed by an actual Scot: Martin Quinn has finally endowed the engineer with a convincing Scottish accent.

Martin Quinn as Scotty, making a confused face while Anson Mount as Captain Pike stands in the background.

But before we criticize him a bit, let’s pay proper respect to the late James Doohan, who originated the role on Star Trek: The Original Series back in 1966. Doohan essentially created Montgomery Scott himself, having been brought in to audition for a then-unnamed role as the Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise by James Goldstone, director of the show’s second pilot episode.

According to Marc Cushman’s exhaustive multi-book reference guide These Are The Voyages , Doohan tried a variety of different accents for the character, and when series creator Gene Roddenberry asked which accent sounded best for an engineer, Doohan selected Scottish, citing Scotland’s history of naval innovation. Doohan was also permitted to name the character, and in the years that followed, “Scotty” became American television’s most famous man from Braveheart Country.

The trouble is, if you ask any true Scottish person, they’ll tell you that Doohan’s accent is laughable. Though Doohan learned it firsthand during World War II while serving alongside a soldier from Aberdeen, it’s widely mocked for its inaccuracy, and can frequently be found on lists of the worst Scottish accents in TV and film history . The Scotsman ’s David McLean called it “the Dick Van Dyke of Scottish accents,” in reference to the American comedian’s infamously awful attempt at a Cockney accent in Mary Poppins . On the other side of the pond, however, few Americans knew any better: Doohan says he was turned down for multiple roles in the 1970s because casting directors weren’t looking for a Scot.

Despite Doohan’s goofy accent, many Scots still took a liking to the jolly engineer. As foreign as the idea may seem in Trek’s native United States, positive representation for Scots has never been a given in the broader landscape of British television. In 2020, a survey of BBC viewers found that no single demographic — across nationality, race, class, gender, and sexual orientation — was more dissatisfied with their depiction on the network than Scots.

When Star Trek first arrived in the UK in 1969, Montgomery Scott was a relatively textured and dignified “Aberdeen pub-crawler.” He’s a consummate professional, often seen in command of the Enterprise, and adored by all. He enjoys a drink, but he’s not a drunk. He’s a flirt, but not a cad. Scottish audiences were so enamored that, upon James Doohan’s death in 2005, four different towns declared themselves the “future birthplace” of Montgomery Scott, each citing a different piece of non-canonical provenance. When Doohan’s son Chris visited one of the claimants, Linlithgow, the town provost told him that Scotty’s phony accent was, in fact, “one of the things they loved about him.”

However, when English actor Simon Pegg was cast as the new Scotty in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 feature film reboot, Scottish Trekkies were far less forgiving. Pegg based his take on Scotty’s lilt on his own father-in-law, who hails from Glasgow, but that didn’t prevent fans from voicing their strong negative reactions when the film’s first trailers were released.

Simon Pegg as Scotty in Star Trek (2009) spreads his arms in a questioning gesture, sitting in warm clothing at a cluttered desk.

While Pegg’s accent is certainly closer to the mark than Doohan’s was, the audience’s standards for a major motion picture in the 21st century were significantly higher. The performance fell victim to a common criticism of Hollywood Scottish accents, that being a lack of playable local identity, though this could be a consequence of Abrams asking Pegg to dial the accent back so an international audience could understand him.

More than a decade later, Strange New Worlds has gone where no Star Trek has gone before — the actual Scotland — to recruit 29-year-old Martin Quinn. Born in Paisley and trained at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Quinn has no previous North American productions on his résumé , though American viewers might recognize him from a bit part on the Netflix hit Derry Girls . Quinn makes a charming Star Trek debut, and even a clueless American listener (such as myself) can immediately detect the difference between the typical “Hollywood” Scots accent and the real deal.

Will his performance pass muster for Scottish viewers, and finally put to rest what part of the country Montgomery Scott calls home? Has even this accent been sanded down to better relate to American audiences, but to an extent only detectable by native speakers? Or, could it be that Strange New Worlds has really worked out the last bug in the man who can fix anything?

Scotty gets his chance to say goodbye to Captain Kirk

Lt. Commander Montgomery “Scotty” Scott never had a chance to say goodbye to Captain Kirk, but that’s all been changed.

In Star Trek: Generations, Captain Kirk is assumed dead after he attempted to help rescue the newly-minted Enterprise-B from a massive energy ribbon that had captured two El-Aurian refugee ships as well. The Enterprise does break free, but a hole is torn in the ship’s hull, and Kirk is presumed dead. And many things are left unsaid between the captain and his former crew, especially Scotty, who served as the chief engineer aboard the original Enterprise.

That all changed in IDW Publishing’s Star Trek Annual 2023 when Scotty, who is now serving under Captain Benjamin Siskso aboard the USS Theseus, comes face to face with a holographic replica of Captain Kirk, and the hardworking engineer finally gets to tell his former captain what working with him meant.

Captain Kirk returns in Star Trek Annual 2023 but only as a hologram

Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, drawn by Rachael Stott, colored by Charlie Kirchoff and lettered by Clayton Cowles, Star Trek Annual 2023 brings sentience to the USS Theseus’ neural network. Along with that sentience comes holographic versions of figures from Starfleet history who try to persuade the crew to set them free. Unsurprisingly, the first hologram to show up is a security protocol that looks and sounds exactly like Captain Kirk.

While this Kirk attempts to convince the crew of the USS Theseus that the holograms aren’t to be trusted, Scotty intervenes, telling Kirk that the captain thinks his only purpose was to solve problems…just like the human Kirk. Scotty’s talk works and hologram Kirk joins the other holograms on their own world which Scotty thinks is appropriate as ” every intelligent species deserves as least one Jim Kirk.”

Scotty’s conversation with hologram Kirk is beautiful and poignant and says what fans wish they could have seen onscreen. This pair deserved a chance to say goodbye, but then, Kirk didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to anyone before becoming trapped in the Nexus. It was a shame that his life ended on Veridian III so abruptly and unnecessarily, leaving a vast amount of words unsaid between him and his former crew. At least Star Trek Annual 2023 allows some closure between Kirk and Scotty.

Scotty Will Return in Season 3 of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Martin Quinn's version of the character first appeared in season 2's finale.

The Big Picture

  • Martin Quinn to bring authentic Scottish flair as Montgomery Scott on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
  • Quinn adds a new perspective to the character previously played by actors from Canada and England.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues to explore the adventures of the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike.

A classic member of the Enterprise crew will return for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . After debuting in the final episode of the show's second season , Martin Quinn will stay on board as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the upcoming season of Paramount+'s newest Star Trek series. As reported by BBC Scotland in an interview with Quinn, the character will recur on Strange New World 's third season, which is currently filming in Toronto, Ontario.

Quinn is the first-ever Scot to play the character, who was previously played by a Canadian ( James Doohan ) and an Englishman ( Simon Pegg ), and the interview notes that he's adding authenticity to the character, making sure that the show's writers use authentic Scottish slang: "They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid'. Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it." Quinn is from the town of Paisley; he has previously appeared on episodes of Limmy's Show , Annika , and Derry Girls .

Who is Montgomery Scott?

Played by Doohan in Star Trek: The Original Series , Scott is the ever-capable head engineer of the USS Enterprise , famed for his ability to solve catastrophic problems in short periods of time. After the series went off the air, Doohan reprised the role in Star Trek: The Animated Series and in all six of the feature films starring the series' original cast. He also returned for a cameo in Star Trek: Generations , attending the launch of the USS Enterprise-B , and guest-starred on the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Relics", where he is discovered by the Enterprise-D 's crew a century in the future, having been preserved in a transporter buffer. Pegg took on the role for J.J. Abrams ' cinematic reboot of the franchise, and reprised it for its two sequels; a fourth film is still up in the air .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features the adventures of the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) prior to The Original Series . It has so far featured two different chief engineers. Hemmer ( Bruce Horak ) was a member of the Aenar species, and sacrificed himself in the show's first-season finale to save the rest of the crew from the Gorn. His replacement was Pelia ( Carol Kane ), a long-lived Lanthanite, who joined the crew in the show's second season.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently filming its third season; no release date has yet been set . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot developments for the Season 2 finale of “ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ,” currently streaming on Paramount+.

The second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” took a large number of big swings: Spock (Ethan Peck) becoming human for a time; an alternate universe James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) romancing La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) in 21st century Toronto; the crossover episode with the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks”; and the musical episode featuring a Klingon boy band group.

Popular on Variety

Written by executive producer Henry Alonso Myers, “Hegemony” plays like an action-packed thriller — which is partly why Myers and his fellow showrunner Akiva Goldsman decided to end the episode on a surprise cliffhanger. And yet, somehow, they also managed to include the introduction of one of the most beloved “Star Trek” characters: engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott.

Myers and Goldsman talked with Variety about how they decided to bring Scotty onto “Strange New Worlds,” why the Gorn have become the Big Bad of the series and where they see the show heading for Season 3.

Henry, you and I talked last year about how the Gorn had become the central antagonistic aliens for Season 1. Did you always plan to revisit them for the Season 2 finale?

Henry Alonso Myers: We always knew we were going revisit them — the finale is just where it ended up. We were trying to do something really big and seeing the adult Gorn was a thing we knew would take time. It takes a lot of design; one of the reasons it came later in the season was we knew that we’d have a lot of work to do. It just sort of worked out as a finale.

The Gorn are a powerful threat on this show, but they’ve never been much of a factor in any iterations of “Trek” that come later in the timeline. Some of that, of course, is because as they were conceived on “TOS,” the Gorn were a little silly looking — it was just a man in a rubber suit.

Myers: It was hard to do it well. It was hard to do respectfully.

Do you intend to resolve that tension in “Strange New Worlds,” to explain why as the timeline evolves, the Gorn as a threat seem to have diminished?

Myers: Well, this is one I would like to punt to Akiva, but only because a lot of what the Gorn became for the show was a vision that he had — this was something that had not really been explored that we had an opportunity to make in a way that had never been done.

Akiva Goldsman: The Gorn, for me, were not intentionally comedic — they were just executed about as well as they could be executed at that point in the run of the show at that time. Like, it was just a bad suit — and let’s not even talk about the Metrons. But I looked at the intention, which is: scary, scary, scary, Other, Other, Other. One thing that we always do in “Star Trek” is we empathize — that’s in large part the purpose of our show. We’re kind of an empathy generator. It’s a carnival mirror on modern society.

But in our desire to express compassion first, which I think is the right desire, sometimes we forget that real monsters exist. I thought it was important for there to be real monsters in our galaxy. That doesn’t mean that 10 years, two seasons from now, we won’t be having a nice chat with the Gorn. But right now in Seasons 1 and 2 and 3, they’re the monsters. By the way, many of the other “Star Trek” antagonists began as alien, as Other — forgive the use of “alien” — but we learned to connect with them. Not so the Gorn. The Gorn are not understandable to us in this way, not relatable to us in this way. Part of our galaxy is be good, be kind, be empathetic, and also understand that evil exists, because seeing with compassion does mean you should be blind to horror. The Gorn are monsters.

How did you decide to introduce Scotty in the finale?

By introducing Scotty, you’re inevitably raising the possibility that the show will also be introducing other characters from the “TOS” era, like Bones or Sulu. Should fans expect that to happen as the show progresses?

Goldsman: The longer we stay on the air — do we still say that? — the longer we stream, the longer we do whatever it is we do to let people watch us, the more likely it becomes. Given our druthers — because Henry and I are both greedy and gluttons for punishment — we’d go right into the TOS era and see what happens. So, if we’re around long enough, sure.

Myers: The one thing I will say is — I try to respect everyone’s approach to this. But we’re not telling the story of who they are [in the future], we’re telling the story of who they are now. They don’t know who they’re going to be. That is the unique opportunity of our show that allows us to tell these stories in ways that they haven’t been told before. That’s the fun of it for us. If we meet other people, they will surprise you. That’s all I’ll say.

This season took some major risks. What other boundaries are you considering pushing for Season 3?

Goldsman: We’re going to keep going. We genre hop. So where we haven’t been, we will try to go. Henry’s watchwords for Season 2 were, “Let’s do Season 1, just bigger and better.” That’s become the truth of Season 3. We’re always doing the thing that we do best, which is secretly just a lot of relationship stories in space. We’ll keep unfolding those hopefully in ways that are different, in the same way that the tones of our episodes will be different. But yeah, ambition will taper off only when we can’t figure out a thing to do we haven’t done before.

Myers: The joy of doing the show — Akiva and I spent a lot of time on this — is trying to come up with something really great and cool and different for our actors. The more challenging stuff you bring them, the harder they will work. We want to bring them great material so that they will continue to do incredible things.

Season 3 for “Strange New Worlds” was announced in March , well after production on Season 2 had ended. How confident were you that you’re going to be able to resolve this cliffhanger?

Myers: The best way to approach this is with a deep sense of confidence. We were very upfront with all of our folks internally about what we were doing. They were very supportive of it. We wanted it to be a surprise. I remember how the [“Star Trek: The Next Generation” cliffhanger episode] “The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1″ made me feel. That was what we wanted to revisit for the audience, to really surprise them.

"It's Been 70 Years Since My Feet Touched the Ground": Scotty Reveals the Bittersweet Final Fate of Star Trek's Original Heroes

  • Scotty hasn't been to Earth in over 70 years, and has no desire to go back.
  • Scotty's loyalty to Starfleet and the Enterprise has shaped his perspective. He has no roots or connection to home, a result of a lifetime spent in space.
  • Scotty's revelation reflects the unique sense of place experienced by lifetime Starfleet officers, many of whom have no connection to their homes after years of service on starships and starbases.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #13!

Scotty has revealed the bittersweet final fate of Star Trek ’s original heroes. Scotty, alongside Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew, saved the galaxy countless times, and are rightly regarded as heroes. Scotty recently joined Captain Sisko on board the USS Theseus, and in Star Trek #13, during a moment of downtime, he makes a stunning confession about his relationship with his home planet and how it relates to his former crew mates.

Star Trek #13 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Marcus To. As the Theseus prepares to head to the Tzenkethi homeworld, the crew reflects on their lives. Scotty reveals he skipped the ceremonies in the crew’s honor, going straight back to work on the ship. Then, he drops a bombshell: he has not been to Earth in over 70 years, and has no real desire to go back.

Scotty believes his lifetime of service to Starfleet, and particularly his adventures aboard the Enterprise , have given him this perspective.

Scotty is a Star Trek Hero on Par With Spock and Kirk

Scotty is best known as the Chief Engineer of the Enterprise, serving under Captain Kirk. Scotty saved the ship on many occasions, acquiring the reputation as “the Miracle Worker.” Retiring from the service shortly after Kirk’s seeming death, Scotty ended up spending several decades in a transporter buffer. The ship carrying him to his retirement destination crash-landed on a Dyson Sphere, and Scotty inserted himself into the transporter as a means of saving his life. Scotty returned in the late 24th century, and Starfleet immediately put him back to work, and he helped design the Theseus.

Scotty having not returned to Earth for 70-plus years is a stunning revelation, but one that makes sense for his character. In numerous Star Trek episodes, Scotty was portrayed as devoted to both Starfleet and the Enterprise. While he had romantic relationships, Scotty never expressed interest in settling down. What is truly remarkable about Scotty’s admission is that he did not return to Earth, even after spending decades marooned on a distant world. Scotty has no real roots, and it is thanks to a lifetime spent in space. Scotty, and others like him, have spent their lives moving from world to world, and have no connection to home.

Scotty Reveals a New Aspect of Life in Star Trek's 24th Century

Many of Scotty’s Enterprise crewmates met with similar fates. Most notable is Captain Kirk, who died on Viridian III in Star Trek: Generations , thousands of light years from home. Furthermore, Spock dies stuck in an alternate timeline where his home planet was destroyed. The final fates of Doctor McCoy, Sulu, Chekov and Uhura have yet to be revealed, but it is clear that lifetime Starfleet officers all have a unique sense of place, cultivated by years spent serving on starships and starbases. Many of them, like Scotty, have no connection to their homes, having not visited them in almost 70 years.

Strange New Worlds Finally Explains Return of Classic Star Trek Original Series Character

Martin Quinn as Montgomery Scott in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.

Prequel cameos are always tricky storytelling gambits. When done right, they can thrill fans with a shiver of recognition. When done wrong, it can feel cheap and sentimental, like almost everything with baby Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi . But against all odds, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has managed to stay on the right side of this balancing act.

Casting delightful actors such as Celia Rose Gooding and Jess Bush has allowed showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers to explore characters who never really got their due in The Original Series . Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley manage to pay homage to Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner while forging their own takes on Spock and Kirk. Add to that number Montgomery Scott , the beloved engineer who made his SNW debut in the season two finale, “ Hegemony .”

We meet Scotty in the best possible way, when the Enterprise crew stumble into an ingenious trap the Lieutenant Junior Grade cobbled together to survive the Gorn. Played with both humility and abundant charm by True Scottsman Martin Quinn, Scotty immediately establishes himself as one of the episode’s highlights.

Ad – content continues below

For Myers, Scotty’s appearance was a long time coming. “We’ve been talking about him for a while as a general idea,” Myers explained to TVLine . “As we were going into the finale, it suddenly became a weird, rare opportunity to introduce him for a lot of different reasons.” Once they realized that they had spot for Scotty, Myers and Goldsman then had a chance to make Star Trek history with the casting. “We also had a great opportunity to cast someone who’s from Scotland,” Myers enthused.

Of course, it wasn’t just about the accent. Quinn also had to be both recognizable and distinct as Scotty, as he isn’t yet the miracle worker who saves Kirk’s Enterprise time and again. According to Myers, Quinn is an actor “who can do that Scotty, but also who can go through all of the things that we want to see him go through before he becomes the person that we know.”

Indeed, all of the major TOS characters have had this mixture of familiarity and difference, whether it’s Uhura unsure if she wants to join Starfleet, Kirk considering monogamy with Carol Marcus, or Spock experimenting with emotions. According to Myers, that tension makes for good storytelling with well-worn TOS characters. “We don’t meet our understanding of who they are in that series, we meet who they are before,” he explained. “They don’t know who they will be, and they aren’t that person yet. They have some stuff to go through.”

For Goldsman, Scotty’s appearance is just part of the nature of a prequel series like SNW . “[I]t starts to become inevitable that we start to pull in more folks that are sort of  TOS -based,” he admitted. Does that mean that Sulu, Chekov, and Rand will drop by in season three? Goldsman and Myers aren’t saying anything yet, but they do promise this about the great Montgomery Scott: “We will see him more.” As with all things Scotty, that’s miracle enough.

  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Star Trek Turned 2023 into the Year of Scotty

scotty star trek 2023

  • Scotty’s diverse experiences on different starships have given him a depth of knowledge beyond his peers. He practically wrote the book on starship engineering.
  • Scotty proved that not even god-like beings are a match for him, as he helped develop a method of detecting and defeating them.
  • In 2023, Scotty had the opportunity to say goodbye to his old friend Captain Kirk, found unexpected depth in his own psyche, and his iconic catchphrase took on a new meaning as a symbol of his skills and knowledge.

Star Trek turned 2023 into Scotty’s year, and he proved more than worthy of it with some all-time career highlights. As the Chief Engineer of the Enterprise under Captain Kirk, Scotty saved the ship multiple times, earning the nickname “the Miracle Worker.” After a distinguished career in Starfleet, Scotty attempted to retire–but fate had other ideas. En route to his destination, Scotty’s ship falls into the gravitational pull of a Dyson Sphere and crashed on it. To ensure his survival, Scotty put himself into a transporter buffer, preserving his life.

Scotty has been played by James Doohan in the Original Series, Simon Pegg in the 2009 reboot and Martin Quinn in Strange New Worlds.

Awakening in the 24th century, Scotty was at first a man out of time. As befitting someone of his intellect and skills, Scotty quickly caught up and returned to Starfleet. Currently, he is serving as Chief Engineer of the USS Theseus , the central ship in IDW’s flagship Star Trek comic. Scotty’s engineering prowess once again was on full display, and 2023 saw the character soar to new heights. Here are some of the exciting developments in Scotty’s life this year.

Star Trek Officially Gives Scotty the Legacy He Deserves

Star Trek’s most famous Scottish engineer is even smarter than fans knew as his place in franchise history is redefined.

Scotty “Wrote the Book” on the Laws of Physics

Throughout his illustrious Starfleet career, Scotty served on a variety of starships and not just the Enterprise. These diverse postings gave Scotty a depth of knowledge beyond his peers, experiences that would come in handy both on the Enterprise and the Theseus. In Star Trek #3, Scotty, while watching a spatial anomaly, declared it was violating nearly every known rule of physics. Scotty explains he would know, as he wrote “half of them.” This story shows that not only is Scotty a Starfleet legend, but that he practically wrote the book on starship engineering–a true testament to his genius.

Not Even Star Trek’s “Gods” Are a Match for Scotty

During his time as the Enterprise’s chief engineer, Scotty encountered a number of god-like beings, such as Redjac and Trelane, and in the case of Redjac, suffered horrible trauma at their hands. However, this year’s Star Trek comics showed that Scotty had what it takes to put them in their place. In Star Trek #4, Scotty, working with the enigmatic Vulcan T’Lir, helps develop a method of detecting god-like beings, such as Q, who was threatening the Theseus . Furthermore, Scotty was instrumental in preventing the God City of the T’Kon from destroying Earth. To help vanquish not one, but two different Star Trek “gods” was a personal highlight for Scotty.

2023 Gave Scotty a Connection to Star Trek: Prodigy

IDW’s Star Trek title has brought in elements of the newer shows (colloquially referred to by fans as “nu-Trek’) and connected them to its story. For example, Shaxs (from Lower Decks ), joined the crew for several issues. In Star Trek #6, another connection to nu-Trek was revealed: Scotty helped design the proto-warp drive system seen on Star Trek: Prodigy. Designed in conjunction with B’Elanna Torres, the proto-warp drive harnessed the power of a baby star, using it to propel the ship at speeds far beyond conventional warp drive. The proto-drive is an engineering miracle, and it is only fitting it began with Scotty.

Star Trek: Spock’s Life After the Enterprise Is Surprisingly Tragic

Mister Spock is one of Star Trek’s most iconic characters, but his life after the Enterprise was marked by disapproval and unfulfilled dreams.

The Ship That Won Star Trek’s God War Was All Thanks to Scotty

The USS Theseus , the central ship in IDW’s flagship Star Trek comic, is one of the most impressive ships in Starfleet history, and it is all thanks to Scotty. Unlike other ships in the fleet, the Theseus is modular in nature, with parts and components easily swapped out for others. Thanks to this design, the ship is over 100 years old. While this may seem to render the ship unfit to fight in the god war, in fact Scotty made the ship battle ready. In Star Trek #3, Scotty revealed that most of the modern parts of the Theseus , the ones that turned the tide of the god war, were all his doing.

The Theseus first appeared in IDW’s Star Trek: Year Five comic, which writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly also worked on.

Scotty Got to Say Goodbye to an Old Friend in 2023

Scotty served under Captain Kirk on the Enterprise for decades, and the two developed a close friendship. However, Scotty never got the proper chance to say goodbye to Kirk, believing the captain to have died on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise NCC-1701-B. This year’s Star Trek Annual gave Scott the chance to say goodbye at last –sort of. An alien intelligence took over the Holodeck, creating duplicates of famous Starfleet personnel, including Captain Kirk. Scotty and the Holo-Kirk had a heart-to-heart talk, which gave the engineer the opportunity to find closure with his old friend.

Fans Got Insight Into Scotty’s Psyche in 2023

Star Trek Scotty Earth

An unfortunate aspect of the classic Star Trek show was that characters outside the “trinity” (Kirk, Spock and McCoy) received little in the way of character development. This can be chalked up to the standards of television at the time, which had yet to embrace ensemble casts. However, Star Trek #13 gave Scotty some unexpected depth by revealing that he had not set foot on a planet in 70 years. While some of this time can be attributed to the years he spent in suspended animation, Scotty has had ample opportunities to return to Earth, or anywhere else, but has passed up on it. A lifetime of service in Starfleet has made Scotty largely rootless, something unexpected for fans.

Scotty’s Iconic Catchphrase Took On New Meaning in 2023

Scotty Theseus Catchphrase

In the original Star Trek series, Scotty often warned Captain Kirk and the crew that the engines would blow up if they pushed them too hard. This would go on to become one of Scotty’s catchphrases, and 2023 gave it new depth . The Theseus is the apple of Scotty’s eye, a ship whose refit he personally supervised. Scotty knows every inch of the ship, and as he explains this to Captain Sisko, he tells them “ when I tell ya she’s going to blow, assume I know what I’m talking about, aye .” Scotty’s catchphrase here becomes a symbol of his vast skills and knowledge.

Scotty Was Reunited With Spock–But It Did Not Go as Fans Would Expect

Spock and Scotty are reunited for the first time in decades

While Scotty may have never gotten the chance for a proper goodbye with Captain Kirk, he was reunited with Mister Spock, presumably for the first time in decades in Star Trek: Defiant #6. Spock and Scotty were on opposite sides: Spock with Worf’s rebel crew on the Defiant and Scotty with Sisko on the Theseus. While the two crews struggle to work together, Spock and Scotty pick up where they left off. Scotty was surprised to see Spock, so much so he asked the Vulcan for a hug. While Spock declines, two old friends are back together again.

Talosians Star Trek 2

Star Trek Just Upgraded TOS’ Talosians into a Major New Galactic Threat

The Talosians are one of the oldest, and most mysterious, races in the Star Trek universe, and now they are its biggest threat.

2023 was a busy and vibrant year for Scotty, one that reasserted his status as a Star Trek icon. In addition to the comics, Scotty returned to television in the second season finale of Strange New Worlds . What 2024 has in store for Scotty, and the rest of the crew of the Theseus , is anyone’s guess, but the engineer’s banner 2023 promises great things.

Star Trek 4 potential release date, cast and everything you need to know

A new writer has boarded the USS Enterprise.

preview for Chris Pine's Red Carpet Evolution

Star Trek 4 potential release date: When can we expect Star Trek 4?

Star trek 4 cast: who's going to be in star trek 4, star trek 4 plot: what's going to happen in star trek 4, star trek 4 trailer: any star trek 4 footage yet.

Star Trek 4 still isn't close to being released, but we do at least know that development continues on the long-awaited movie .

In March 2024, it was reported that Steve Yockey – who developed The Flight Attendant – had become the latest writer to tackle a new draft for the movie, which is intended to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña.

This is separate from the other two Star Trek movies in the works: a prequel movie directed by Toby Haynes and Star Trek: Discovery spin-off Section 31 , which finished filming in March 2024.

We'll likely see both of those movies before we see Star Trek 4 , but at least it should be released one day. But while we wait, here's everything you need to know about the (potential) return of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek 4 .

Is Star Trek 4 confirmed?

As far as we know, Star Trek 4 is definitely going to happen despite the fact we're nearing eight years since the last movie, Star Trek Beyond , was released.

The long-gestating movie finally looked to be on track in February 2022 when it was announced that JJ Abrams was returning to produce with Matt Shakman directing, to the surprise of the cast as much as the fans.

Unfortunately, Shakman left the movie in August 2022 to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel instead . And then in September 2022, Paramount took the movie off the release calendar entirely.

In March 2023, JJ Abrams – who has produced all three movies in the reboot trilogy and directed two of them – said that a search for a director is ongoing.

"I will say it's the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one," he told Esquire . Of course, Pine also called the franchise "cursed" so it depends how hopeful you feel like being.

We've heard nothing since about a potential director for the movie, but at least we know is that Star Trek 4 is in active development at Paramount, given that there is now a new writer on board.

director jj abrams and the cast from star trek

Once upon a time, Star Trek 4 was scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 22, 2023.

Of course, that never happened, and Star Trek 4 hasn't got a confirmed release date as of May 2024. There's no rumours either about when it could reappear on the schedule.

In June 2022, prior to Shakman leaving the project, Paramount boss Brian Robbins did confirm development was under way on the fourth Star Trek . "We're deep into it with JJ Abrams, and it feels like we're getting close to the starting line and excited about where we're going creatively," he said .

zoe saldana as uhura and john cho as sulu in a still from star trek beyond

However, in November 2022, star Zachary Quinto told The Independent : "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it.

"All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I’ve learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth Star Trek movie that feels real right now."

Other people involved seem to have faith in the project moving forward, though, and hopefully a new writer joining is a positive step.

All we can do is watch this space.

star trek

Even when Star Trek 4 was originally being released in December 2023, it hadn't been 100% confirmed that the reboot cast would be back.

That being said, during his June 2022 announcement, Robbins did say he knew audience "wants that cast in this movie" – referring to the reboot cast.

So, if it ever does come to fruition, we'd be surprised if it was with a brand-new cast. You can likely then expect the returns of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).

Urban certainly seems keen for a return, although he also revealed in March 2022 that, like Pine, he hadn't read a script yet . "I would love to work with those guys again; so much fun, the best hang. We'll see," he enthused.

It all feels very up in the air, as per Quinto's quotes, but that doesn't mean we can't hope.

The initial plan for the fourth movie was to have a timey-wimey adventure that featured Chris Pine's James T Kirk somehow joining forces with his long-dead dad, played by Chris Hemsworth .

Hemsworth opened up in May 2019 about why he stepped away from the movie , saying: "I didn't feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn't want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."

chris hemsworth as george kirk in star trek

It's unclear if this new version of Star Trek 4 plans to bring Hemsworth back or if it's gone in a totally new direction, but Hemsworth seems open to a return for the fourth movie.

In October 2022, Rings of Power bosses JD Payne and Patrick McKay teased more about what their original idea for the fourth movie was going to be. "The conceit was that through a cosmic quirk in the Star Trek world, they were the same age," McKay explained.

We also don't know yet whether the new movie will recast Pavel Chekov following Anton Yelchin's tragic death in 2016. "It's bittersweet because we are coming together for a fourth time, and one of us is no longer with us," Saldaña said in March 2022 .

"But we honestly feel that going back and keeping the Star Trek family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts."

Star Trek Beyond Zoe Saldana as Uhura

Right now, we don't have any confirmed plot details for the fourth movie, and it's not clear how closely it'll follow on from the ending of Star Trek Beyond .

The third movie ended with Kirk declining the promotion to vice admiral and staying as the captain of the USS Enterprise. Spock also chose to remain in Starfleet and reignited his romance with Uhura.

As the movie ends, they're all set to continue their mission on a brand-new USS Enterprise after the previous one was destroyed during the movie's events.

star trek beyond trailer grab

It means that the fourth movie can go anywhere. But, for Pine, he believes that whatever the plot is, it shouldn't try to compete with Marvel .

"I've always thought that Star Trek should operate in the zone that is smaller. You know, it's not a Marvel appeal. It's like, let's make the movie for the people that love this group of people, that love this story, that love Star Trek ," he said.

"Let's make it for them and then, if people want to come to the party, great. But make it for a price and make it, so that if it makes a half-billion dollars, that's really good."

star trek beyond chris pine as kirk

You're kidding, right? We'd love to get all timey-wimey ourselves and show you a trailer for Star Trek 4 from the future, but we're stuck in the Mirror Universe.

TOS: "By Any Other Name" (s2e21) with Matt from Star Trek: Prodigy Trek, Marry, Kill

SCOTTY GETS DRUNK with a Kelvan and Star Trek fans are given a scene to enjoy forever. Does the rest of the episode rise to the occasion or is there a "just play the hits" quality to it? It's Trek Marry Kill's 79th episode, and so it seemed only fitting to do an episode of TOS.  The Enterprise is once again taken over by superior beings and once again it's up to Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty to figure out how to take down "gods." This time, the gods don't want to test humanity or watch them toil for amusement, they need the ship to complete a 300-year journey back to their home galaxy of Andromeda.  This time, our intrepid crew takes down "gods" with the most human behavior they can conjure. Joining Bryan this week to discuss the episode is CG Artist Matt who worked on both wrapped seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy (season one of which you can watch right now in the US on Netflix) and whose opinion of this episode has changed over time.  If you're enjoying the show, consider rating and reviewing us on whichever platform you use to listen to the show. Check us out at trekmarrykpod on social.  Our monthly animated spotlight will post on the 2nd of the month and was preempted only to make sure a TOS episode went in as our 79th episode.

Michael Dorn Wanted Armin Shimerman To Play The Ferengi That Worf Killed In Star Trek Picard

Wait, Shaw doesn’t geek out on meeting Scotty?

Honestly I don’t think Shaw would be a fan of Scotty’s admitted penchant for inflating repair times as he mentioned in Relics and in the movies.

Shaw described his career as pretty boring before the events of Picard Season 3. If they give him too much action in this comic, could undermine that.

We need a Shaw / Titan-A show/cartoon/comic/podcast whatever

All the Shaw. 24/7. Please. What an enormous mistake knocking him off at the end of the season. He could have easily carried a very successful Titan series. Just a big waste of a terrific character and actor playing him, thrown away in favor of an ephemeral nostalgia squirt in service of an outgoing cast. Bah.

Why not a TV show? I want the Captain Shaw Chronicles. Start from his time at battle of Wolf 359 and go all the way to his days on the Titan. We know how the character ends, but we can still see how his journey was until he reached that end point.

Great to see the classic Connie.

Yes indeed! I’m sure Utopia Planetia had one there as a momento of their distinguished past glories. Arguably the most famous line of ships in Starfleet history.

Shaw should be court-martialed for that line about ignoring orders from Starfleet Command. And “we don’t have time to help a god. Oh nevermind, I wasn’t actually saying you were a god or that I cared”

What terrible writing

Also, “spent most of time, poking holes” – just like in PIC S3 !! Engineer my skidplate, guess he can only be useful when there’s an emergency that requires HIS specific skills, and no one else. Otherwise, he pawns it off to that vulcan assistant of his.

It had me at the “2001” reference.

Sorting “Star Trek: The Original Series” Characters into Their Hogwarts Houses

by Sidney Harmon · Published May 17, 2024 · Updated May 9, 2024

As Starfleet’s flagship, the Enterprise represents the best the galaxy has to offer. Her crew are competent and capable people: explorers, warriors, diplomats, and scholars of the highest caliber. They face terrifying foes unflinchingly, solve impossible problems daily, act as a loyal and harmonious crew, and do whatever it takes to make things right. And they’re all so darn sassy. Sorting Star Trek: The Original Series characters into Hogwarts Houses is a tall order, but let’s try our best.

Captain James T. Kirk – Gryffindor

Captain Kirk represents the 1960s ideal of a leader, a classic “don’t let them see you sweat” boss. He stands for truth and justice no matter the cost. There are certainly times when Kirk could have thought ahead before recklessly taking the plunge, but his decisive courage always works out for him in the end. Kirk is Gryffindor personified, boldly leading his crew where no man has gone before.

Commander Spock – Slytherin

Hear me out. Spock seems like an obvious Ravenclaw, right? But while Vulcan culture prizes knowledge, intelligence, and learning, Spock is too ambitious to stay on his home planet. In a move that his Vulcan acquaintances find reckless, selfish, and illogical , Spock joins Starfleet to forge his own path. Though Commander Spock cares deeply for his crewmates, he can also make sacrifices for the greater good. He’s not above using lies and manipulation to succeed. Spock plays by his own rules in a calculating way that’s occasionally upsetting to his friends and alarming to his acquaintances. Admit it: this man is, logically, a Slytherin.

Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy – Hufflepuff

It would be easy to put him in Ravenclaw, but prickly Doctor McCoy was built for Hufflepuff. One of the greatest character dynamics of all time is that of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy – Kirk acts as the fearless leader, second-in-command Spock advocates for logic, and chief medical officer McCoy advocates for kindness. As McCoy himself often exclaims, he is a doctor – one who aggressively defends the helpless and saves every life he can. He’s unwaveringly faithful to his captain, his crew, and his ideals. He may be rough, but any man with enough compassion for everyone in the galaxy would be a good fit in the House of loyalty, hard work, and heart.

Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott – Gryffindor

What of our chief engineer? Facing the toughest situations with unwavering bravado, mouthing off to superior officers, and consistently refusing orders from anyone but his captain… Where else would he go but Gryffindor? Scotty owns up to his mistakes, says what he means, and doesn’t mince words. This is the man who punched a Klingon for calling the Enterprise garbage. I’d certainly call that “brave at heart.”

Lt. Nyota Uhura – Ravenclaw

Who doesn’t adore Lieutenant Uhura? She’s the ideal of a “strong female character” – a hyper-competent, high-achieving woman who is bold and intelligent, but not afraid to be soft and kind. Uhura is one of Starfleet’s top linguists, a skilled musician , a romantic, and a feminist. She knows what she’s doing, and she knows she’s good at it. She always asks the right questions and solves every mystery that’s put in front of her with Ravenclaw-worthy wit.

Lt. Hikaru Sulu – Gryffindor

Lieutenant Sulu is an immovable object – the Enterprise helmsman and combat tactician who fearlessly makes the most of dire situations and cares for a carnivorous plant in his free time. How often does Sulu insult enemies, crewmates, and even commanding officers without blinking? Remember when he terrorized the ship with a fencing foil? Spock said it best: Hikaru Sulu is, “at heart, a swashbuckler out of the 18th century.” He would have a blast wielding the sword of Gryffindor.

Ensign Pavel Chekov – Gryffindor

Pavel Chekov is a simple man. He loves four things: Russia, the Enterprise and her crew, causing mischief, and having a good time. This insolent little punk is willing to start a fight over anything, and we love him for it. When a Klingon insults Kirk, Chekov has to be held back from throwing the first punch – and once the fight starts, he’s right in the middle of it. This kid never backs down. That kind of reckless courage belongs in Gryffindor.

Nurse Christine Chapel – Hufflepuff

Yes, she’s intelligent and capable, but compassion is Christine Chapel’s defining characteristic. Chapel may show some spunk from time to time, but ultimately, she cares deeply for other people, working diligently to treat every patient with care and respect. Everything she does is for the good of others; keeping her crew happy and healthy is always her top priority.

Yeoman Janice Rand – Hufflepuff

Yeoman Rand was intended as Captain Kirk’s love interest and the soft feminine element of the crew. Unfortunately, issues off-screen had the character written out of season two, but her personality still shines through in season one. Most notably, when a young guest on the Enterprise becomes infatuated with her, Janice bears his attention with gentle patience that would make Helga proud.

What do you think? Be on the lookout; we’re plotting a course for more Star Trek Sortings!

Strange New Worlds season 2's finale, "Hegemony," saw Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise defy Starfleet orders to rescue Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) and the colonists of the planet Parnassus Beta. By the end of Strange New Worlds ' thrilling season 2 finale, Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte, Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), and Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) are captured by the Gorn and Batel has become a host to the terrifying alien species' parasitic eggs.

When the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns in season 3, it will be to a very different Star Trek on Paramount+ landscape. Star Trek: Discover y will have ended with season 5, essentially passing the torch to Strange New Worlds as the flagship Star Trek on Paramount+ live-action series. Star Trek: Lower Decks also will have ended with season 5. The next Star Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , will begin production in fall 2024. The first made-for-streaming Star Trek on Paramount+ movie, Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, is completed and awaits a Paramount+ premiere date. But it's safe to say Strange New Worlds will be the franchise's new crown jewel series, especially after the positive reception to season 2.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Ending & Cliffhanger Explained

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's finale nailbiter brings back the fearsome Gorn and ends with Captain Pike facing an impossible choice.

Production started in December 2023 and is expected to last until May 2024

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 was ready to begin filming in May 2023, but production was halted and delayed for 7 months thanks to the dual Writer's Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. When the picketing was over, Strange New Worlds season 3 production finally began filming in December and is expected to last until May 2024 . Producing director Chris Fisher is directing Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere, which will resolve Strange New Worlds season 2's Gorn cliffhanger. Fisher directed Strange New Worlds season 1's finale , "A Quality of Mercy," and Strange New Worlds season 2's premiere, "The Broken Circle."

Other directors lined up for Strange New Worlds season 3 are Jordan Canning, who helmed Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 2, and Dan Liu, who takes over for Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3. Canning directed the Vulcan comedy romp Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, "Charades," while Liu helmed the tense Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 4, "Memento Mori," and Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, "Lost in Translation." In addition, Jonathan Frakes will direct a "Hollywood noir" episode of Strange New Worlds season 3 after he was lauded for directing Strange New Worlds ' comedy crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks .

The other Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 directors are Valerie Weiss, Sharon Lewis, Andrew Coutts, and Maja Vrvilo.

The wait for Strange New Worlds season 3 will likely last until 2025.

Realistically, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 probably won't premiere on Paramount+ until some time in 2025 . When filming finally wraps in May 2024, post-production and visual effects for Strange New Worlds season 3's 10 episodes will take time to complete. Further, Paramount+ will need Strange New Worlds season 3 as the centerpiece of Star Trek in its 2025 schedule. However, this doesn't stop eager audience members from hoping Strange New Worlds season 3 could split its release and drop the first episodes by the end of 2024, mainly so that they can see the resolution of Strange New Worlds season 2's cliffhanger .

Expect more "big swings" from Strange New Worlds season 3

As well as resolving the fate of Captain Batel and the captured Starship Enterprise crew, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already set up multiple storylines for season 3 . One of the biggest storylines will be the arrival of Nurse Christine Chapel's (Jess Bush) fiance Roger Korby which will create new a love triangle involving Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck). Other big storylines set up in Strange New Worlds season 2 include Dr. M'Benga and his dark secrets from the Klingon War, the impending fatherhood of Lieutenant James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), and Kirk's promotion to Commander aboard the USS Farragut. Scotty (Martin Quinn) also joined the cast of Strange New Worlds and could recur in season 3.

The USS Enterprise will have a new Science Lab in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.

Viewers can also expect some big genre swings to follow in the footsteps of Star Trek 's first-ever musical episode and the animated crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks . Already announced is Strange New Worlds season 3's "Hollywood Noir" episode directed by Jonathan Frakes. Most excitingly for fans of Star Trek: The Original Series will be a chance to see the young Montgomery Scott learn and grow into the USS Enterprise's legendary Chief Engineer. There are still at least six years before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) takes command of the Starship Enterprise giving Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 plenty of ground to cover when it returns.

Expect Strange New Worlds to help celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds received an early season 4 renewal from Paramount+. Although Strange New Worlds season 4 won't film back-to-back like Strange New Worlds seasons 1 and 2 did, it's possible that production for the show's fourth season could begin in late 2024 or in 2025 after a hiatus. This projects Strange New Worlds season 2 to premiere on Paramount+ in 2026, which would help mark Star Trek 's 60th anniversary. Given that very little has been revealed about season 3, it's too early to tell what Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 will be about, but it's thrilling to know that more voyages of Captain Pike's Starship Enterprise are assured.
