JD Wetherspoon pubs are well known for their friendly atmosphere, cheap drink prices and speedy food service.

As of June 2021, there were a combined number of 925 Wetherspoons establishments across Great Britain - making the franchise one of the UK's leading pub chains to date.

And as many across the North East know, Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding areas play host to 10 - with each Spoons visitor having their favourite.

Go here for the latest news live from Newcastle city centre

However, preferences differ - so we thought we would take a look at all of the Wetherspoons in and around the Toon , to see which one shined brightest - according to TripAdvisor reviewers, at least.

Take a look at our list below to find out how your local ranked.

The 10 Wetherspoons in and around Newcastle upon Tyne, ranked from best to worst:

The Quayside, Newcastle City Centre - NE1 3RN

3 1/2 stars from 619 reviews

Food: 3 1/2

Value: 4 1/2

Atmosphere: 4

Topping the list of Newcastle Wetherspoons is none other than the city centre based Quayside pub.

A spacious Spoons with a fantastic courtyard to enjoy in the summer, there's nothing quite like The Quayside itself.

Named aptly due to it's location, seated on the bed of the River Tyne - this lively boozer hosts stunning views from inside and out, and its cosy setting makes for the perfect place to enjoy a cheap drink regardless of weather or time of year.

They often also offer function room hire for those looking to celebrate a special occasion.

One TripAdvisor reviewer, wrote: "We used this place for late night drinks and breakfasts.

"The former was excellent value & quality and served quickly despite being very busy at times; the latter were really good value & tasty."

The Mile Castle, Newcastle City Centre - NE1 5XU

The Mile castle on Westgate road, Newcastle

3 1/2 stars from 422 reviews

Service: 3 1/2

Towering above the corner of Westgate Road and Grainger Street in one of the city's many traditional buildings is none other that the Mile Castle.

Filled with an abundance of history, the Grade II listed building features a wealth of knowledge that visitors can soak up while enjoying their breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Not for the faint-hearted, this Wetherspoons is notoriously lively due to its location, with some visitors complaining of 'deafening' noise levels.

One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: "Wetherspoons The Mile Castle is a massive Wetherspoons pub in the city centre and is one of the busiest pubs we went to on a six day city break to Newcastle.

"With ground/first and second floor seating areas all with a typical Wetherspoons look and feel and many interesting fixtures and features relating to the local area and the local history.

"We visited here several times and on every occasion we had meals which were always well served and priced."

The Five Swans, Newcastle City Centre - NE1 7PG

The Five Swans, Newcastle.

3 1/2 stars from 397 reviews

Atmosphere: 3 1/2

Following shortly behind the Mile Castle is none other than the Five Swans, which is also located in the heart of Newcastle city centre, on St Marys Place.

Eye catching from the outside with its notable red painting, the inside is decorated in traditional Spoons fashion - furnished with dark oak seating and swirly carpets galore.

The outside area also offers adequate seating for those who prefer to sit in the sun on warmer days.

One reviewer wrote: "The Five Swans on St Mary's Place is a very good Wetherspoons pub that offers as all Wetherspoon pubs offer a well priced food and drinks menu.

"Housed in a fantastic building with a great outside seating area, the inside is really big with an excellent multi-roomed interior with a traditional Wetherspoon Interior with lots of interesting fixtures and features relating to the pub and local history."

Metro Centre Wetherspoons, Gateshead - NE11 9YG

Intu Metro Centre in Gateshead.

3 1/2 stars from 366 reviews

Value: 3 1/2

Atmosphere: 3

The Metrocentre is not only the biggest shopping centre in the North East, but is also the second largest mall in the entirety of the UK, just behind Westfield in Stratford, London.

So of course it would make perfect sense for Wetherspoon to lease a spot in the remarkable plaza to dish out food and drink to shoppers alike.

Seated in the upper blue mall of the mall, the longstanding Wetherspoons offers shoppers cheap meals and beverages, as well as a place to relax while they take a breather from hectic shopping trips and the all round hustle and bustle of the centre itself.

One reviewer said: "Popped in for lunch whilst visiting the Metro.

"Food was nice for what we paid, service was good and we never waited long.

"Definitely recommend for a quick lunch. Cleaned and safe."

The Harry Clasper, Whickham - NE16 4HF

The Harry Clasper Wetherspoons bar in Whickham

3 1/2 stars from 274 reviews

Seated in a former council offices building is Whickham's favourite pub, the Harry Clasper - a cheep and cheerful boozer which ranks highly in terms of aesthetics.

The establishment is named after a local boat builder, who became a famous sportsman in the Victorian era. Harry Clasper also was a pub landlord in his lifetime and was buried in St Mary's churchyard after his passing.

Those who visit the tribute pub can expect late nights by a cosy open fire, reading up on local history while tucking into cheap and easy pub grub and a selection of budget price booze.

One reviewer wrote: "The food was very delicious with very friendly and lovely staff, the service was quick and the establishment had a general friendly feel to it."

The Job Bulman, Gosforth - NE3 1AA

The Job Bulman in Gosforth.

3 1/2 stars from 218 reviews

Atmosphere: 4 1/2

A modern Wetherspoons in a beautiful historic building, the Job Bulman in Gosforth offers visitors a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy food and drink within.

Seated in a former post office building, the spacey venue is decorated elegantly and leaves some visitors forgetting that they're sat in a slap-up Spoons at all.

Named after a respected doctor who had a foot in the early development of the local area - the venue offers punters cheap food and cheaper drinks that your run of the mill bar and restaurant.

One reviewer wrote: "Cheap and cheerful food. We ordered everything through the app and it arrived super quickly.

"All was fresh and tasty. Can't say anything bad. Will be back."

The Keel Row, Newcastle City Centre - NE1 5RF

The Gate in Newcastle

3 1/2 stars from 193 reviews

Seated in the city centre's fantastic Gate plaza, the Keel Row is a hidden gem which offers tasty meals and sumptuous drinks to visitors across the Toon.

Completely different in terms of usual Spoons decor, the Keel Row is ambiently lit with cool mood lighting and modern furniture galore to match the building is resides in.

Big glass bay doors mark the entrance to the boozer, and its big and bright neon lighting and signage outside makes it hard to miss.

One TripAdvisor reviewer commented: "Visited the Keel Row with my girlfriend and her parents and ordered food on the app on a busy Sunday.

"We got three small plates and drinks and it was brilliant value as always, but we felt the need to leave a review as the two lads that brought our drinks over were so polite and offered great service, I only wish we knew their names to give them true recognition."

The High Main, Byker - NE6 1DL

The High Main Wetherspoons bar in Byker

3 1/2 stars from 166 reviews

Situated on the ever busy Shields Road, the High Main scores averagely according to TripAdvisor reviewers.

A mural within the establishment itself reads: "The ‘High Main’ refers to one of the ten seams of workable coal in the Newcastle field. It is the highest of the seams about 6ft thick and generally referred to as the best for workability and making a good lasting fire."

A working man's pub in a lively neighbourhood, the High Main offers cheap drinks, quick bites to eat and an always bustling atmosphere for locals and visitors to be a part of.

One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: "Definitely one of the better Wetherspoons pubs and I've been to lots across the country.

"My regular dish is chicken burger and chips with a pint of Heineken & they deliver me a tasty burger with lots of chips and the condiments of my choice.

"The beer always tastes fresh & comes to a grand total of £6 you can't be robbed at that price."

The Tilley Stone, Gateshead - NE8 1EE

The Tilley Stone Wetherspoons bar in Gateshead

3 1/2 stars from 103 reviews

The Tilley Stone in the centre of Gateshead has became a go-to local for many residents of the local area. With a rustic interior paying tribute to local history, visitors can expect plenty to look at while supping their drinks or tucking into classic pub dishes.

The establishment is also located a stone's throw away from Gateshead Central Station, making it very easily accessible to those visiting from outside the area via public transport.

One rave reviewer wrote: "Centrally located in Gateshead near the transport interchange, this is a typically spacious Wetherspoons Pub.

"Not over busy on a Sunday lunchtime and with a number of tables empty, we were served quickly at the bar, there being an excellent collection of local hand pumped real ales at exceptionally low prices. Had a great pint."

The Ritz, Wallsend - NE28 8JD

the travelling spoon newcastle

3 stars from 290 reviews

Designed by the cinema specialist Percy L Browne, the eye-catching art-deco Ritz building has been a longstanding feature of Wallsend's High Street West.

Initially used as a cinema, the Ritz was converted into a bingo hall due to its adequate seating, housing up to 1,636 patrons. However, the hall itself closed doors in 2011 - being reopened after a revamp by Wetherspoons in 2015.

The old-style art deco frontage has been restored, while inside it features paintings from local artists and celebrates Wallsend’s ship building heritage.

One reviewer of the Ritz wrote: "Excellent both service and food thank you well done.

"The overall customer care is really good the value for money is excellent. I would recommend to everyone if you want some quick food and a relaxed atmosphere."

The Media Review: Newcastle United

Albion were good value for their point at Newcastle on Saturday.

Newcastle United are followed by a group of football writers based in the North East who are also born and bred in that unique corner of the football world and have been accused of seeing everything through a black-and-white filter.

Whether that is true or not, this column is well aware that the Geordies who occupy the St James' Park press box can be as fair-minded and objective as anyone. And in most cases, their reports of Albion’s 1-1 draw on Tyneside included plenty of praise for the efforts of Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

Most led with the consequences of the result for Newcastle’s chances of a return to Europe, but with the Magpies in the top six with two games to go, that was the right call. However, they were not blind to Albion’s contribution.

Long-time Toon-watcher Louise Taylor wrote in The Observer that “Eddie Howe’s team are on a mission to return to Europe next season, preferably in the Europa League, but Brighton’s fancy footwork proved sufficiently bamboozling to place a potentially significant dent in those ambitions.

“Even a manager as meticulously assiduous as Newcastle’s could not quite cater for his rather fatigued players’ frequent outmanoeuvring at the feet of the impressive Julio Enciso and friends.

“The visitors duly took an early lead when the home defence failed to cope with Pascal Gross’s corner. Having spun away from his supposed minder, Elliot Anderson, an unmarked Joël Veltman connected with Danny Welbeck’s flick-on and scrambled the ball beyond a rather nonplussed Martin Dubravka from close range.

“A raft of injuries dictated that Roberto De Zerbi’s side were some distance from full strength but they passed and moved with real assurance while the influential Enciso missed a couple of inviting chances. They prompted a string of expletives from De Zerbi.

“As the interval approached Brighton’s manager could not fail to have noticed that his team were losing their earlier ability to slow the game down when it suited them, despite much impressive positional interchanging.

“An equaliser beckoned and, deep in first-half stoppage time, Sean Longstaff scored it, the midfielder tapping in after Anthony Gordon and Anderson combined to unhinge the visiting rearguard. Yet as the match wore on Brighton stubbornly refused to fold.”

In T he Mail On Sunday , Jason Mellor wrote that “Roberto De Zerbi couldn't contain his frustration as he smashed his fist into the dugout but Newcastle had more reason to rue an outcome that did little for their European hopes.

“The Brighton boss took his anger out on the perspex covering at his side's sluggish start, but they recovered sufficiently to come away with a deserved point to dent the hosts' bid for a top-six finish.

“In truth, neither side did enough to merit victory and Brighton remain without a win on the road in six attempts. A point keeps them in the hunt for a top-10 finish and it will not be lost on Newcastle that de Zerbi's men can do them a big favour in midweek with a victory over Chelsea, one of the Geordies' rivals for a European spot.”

The Sun on Sunday bemoaned Newcastle’s injuries this season without mentioning Albion’s, but admitted that “Eddie Howe's Mags never did enough to see off Brighton. They've been scoring goals for fun recently but their front line faltered badly here.

“While Brighton had nothing to play for other than finishing in the top half [a matter of opinion], Newcastle needed a win to strengthen their grip on sixth. Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi was going potty on the touchline in the early stages as his side struggled to get out. But they soon took control and the travelling fans were jumping with joy 18 minutes in.

“Danny Welbeck glanced Pascal Gross' corner towards the back post and Veltman outmuscled Elliot Anderson to bundle home beyond Martin Dubravka.

“As Brighton bossed possession, Toon struggled to find any rhythm or momentum.

PL Extended Highlights: Newcastle 1 Brighton 1

Cut to shreds down their right, Danny Welbeck played Simon Adingra into acres of space before the winger charged towards the box and picked out an unmarked Julio Enciso at the back post, only for the Paraguayan to spoon a header well over.”

A couple of the broadsheet writers looked down their noses at Albion’s game management. Luke Edwards in The Sunday Telegraph acknowledged that "Brighton did enough to secure a well-earned draw,’ but added that “it was an intensely frustrating game. Brighton took an early lead through Joel Veltman and then did their best to irritate and frustrate their hosts. They were good at it too, ensuring Howe’s side could not build up any real attacking momentum, with some pretty blatant time-wasting tricks, but also some sharp passing play to keep possession.”

According to Martin Hardy in The Sunday Times , “Brighton & Hove Albion revelled in their role as party-poopers. They made Newcastle shoot towards the Gallowgate End and down the slope in the first half, Bart Verbruggen took an age for each goal kick to antagonise the home support, and it worked. By the 18th minute they had been rewarded for their tactics when a corner from Pascal Gross was flicked on by Danny Welbeck and Joel Veltman prodded past Martin Dubravka at the far post, having got ahead of Elliot Anderson.”

The BBC ’s Harry Poole wrote that “this was another positive result for Brighton at the end of an inconsistent, injury-disrupted season.

“Captain Lewis Dunk could not hide his frustration with his team-mates as the Seagulls struggled to settle, but Veltman's opener allowed them to threaten frequently on the counter and Julio Enciso had several good chances to improve his side’s position.

“It was ultimately their determination in defence that earned them a point, which leaves them 10th in the standings as they aim for a top-half finish with two home games remaining.”

Wetherspoons to build first ever 'Super Spoons' featuring 'Britain's biggest beer garden'

Wetherspoons to build first ever 'Super Spoons' featuring 'Britain's biggest beer garden'

Wetherspoons is giving customers what they really want.

Britt Jones

There’s one place you can always count on when the Sun is shining and you fancy a pint and that’s Wetherspoons.

As a staple of Great British culture, Spoons provides cheap food and even cheaper booze to the public, especially on the Bank Holidays when we’re all feeling the need to congregate for music and cocktails.

But the much-loved chain has been working on a major redevelopment of one of its popular branches.

According to The Sun, Wetherspoons is going to create a mega location, with the 'biggest beer garden' known to Britain.

The chain is set to invest a whopping £5 million to create a ‘Super Spoons’ which will be more than just your regular pub.

In fact, it’s going to be a 26-bedroom hotel equipped with 200 staff.

Wetherspoons is giving customers what they really want. (Nathan Stirk/Getty Images)

Plus, it’s not a far-off plan as work begins on Monday (13 May) to renovate The Mile Castle in Newcastle, which first opened back in December 2009, and expand it’s structure to take on the additional space.

When it’s finished, the location will reportedly double in size, and will feature a 3,000sq ft outdoor area.

But where they giveth they taketh away as The Mile Castle will unfortunately be closed from 24 June until 3 September.

The hotel won’t open until November, and will help the city with new part-time and full time jobs as it’ll need around 70 staff members on hand. This is on top of the 130 people who already work at the pub.

And, this isn’t actually a new idea.

It was formulated in 2018 but the awful time (that many of us have blanked out) during Covid stopped its development.

The beer garden is apparently going to be the biggest in the UK. (JD Wetherspoon)

Thankfully, now we’re all able to go about life as normal some years on, the Super Spoons can get cracking!

Not only will the refurb include an extended bar, a new cellar and some contemporary carpets, but the hotel aspect will provide guests with a swanky en-suite and disability accessible rooms.

Sir Tim Martin, the founder and chairman of Wetherspoons, said: "The investment highlights our commitment to the pub, its customers and staff, as well as the city of Newcastle.

"The Mile Castle is an extremely popular pub and we are confident that our customers will welcome the work being undertaken in the pub as well as the creation of our first hotel in the city."

LADbible has contacted Wetherspoons for comment.
