Dale!”

“I am incredibly excited to be going on tour with my friends Pitbull and Ricky,” Iglesias said. “The Trilogy Tour will be an amazing experience for all of our fans. It’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime tour.”

The artists are each promising career-spanning sets of their greatest hits as well as “state-of-the-art visuals.”

Last year, Iglesias released Final Vol. 1 , which contained the track “Te Fuiste.” Iglesias told Rolling Stone it felt good to be reaching the finish line of his recording career. “I think it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “It doesn’t mean I’m going to stop writing songs, but maybe [I’ll do things] differently. I look at this like, an album’s a book and each song is a chapter. But at the same time, you can also say a song can be part of that, too. Hopefully I can put out more chapters later on — and I still have to finish Vol. 2!”

Pitbull has spent much of the past couple of years on the road, first touring with Iglesias on the “I Feel Good” tour in 2021 and then last year with Iggy Azalea and Sean Paul on the “Can’t Stop Us” tour. He’s planning on releasing a new album, Trackhouse , on July 7. The album is named after the Trackhouse brand, which merges NASCAR, sports, and entertainment, of which Pitbull is a partner.

Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull prove a tempting trio at tour opener

the trilogy tour

WASHINGTON – As trilogies go, the combination of Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull is a robust one.

It’s also a triad of testosterone. This Trilogy Tour kicked off Saturday at a festive, sold-out Capital One Arena in D.C.

The three Latin pop stars came equipped with their individual charisma and a heap of hits during a four-hour night that only felt like a slog during the 30-minute set changes among the acts (and no, the screaming DJ playing ear-splitting club jams in between didn’t help).

Here’s a look at how opening night of the tour – a 19-city run that will traverse the country until wrapping in Vancouver in December – unfolded.

What is the order of performers on The Trilogy Tour?

All three artists are technically co-headliners — or perhaps co-co-headliners is more fitting — with each playing hour-long sets of 13-15 songs.

Pitbull is on deck first – at 7:35 this night, after doors opened late and sound checks were still unfolding as fans headed to their seats.

Iglesias follows, with Martin closing the night of bilingual music. Each performer offers their own specialized barrage of lasers, rotating lights and pyro; their distinct personalities and style of showmanship are adeptly spotlighted.

While this is the first time these three artists have shared a bill, they are not unfamiliar tour partners. In 2017, Iglesias paired with Pitbull, while in 2021, the son of Latin megastar Julio Iglesias teamed with Martin for a shared jaunt that also included a fledgling Sebastián Yatra.

Pitbull’s set is slick and brimming with positivity

The Cuban rapper, singer and businessman from Miami burst onstage looking cool and sharp in a black suit and shades, surrounded by six shapely female dancers and a sextet of musicians.

His roof-raiser “Don’t Stop the Party” served as an appropriate opener as he blanketed the air with a South Beach vibe and a trove of neon lights.

“Hotel Room Service” prompted a chorus shout-along from the crowd, while the man known affectionately as Mr. Worldwide and Mr. 305 and legally as Armando Christian Pérez engaged in relentless aerobics, working out his arms as much as his pelvis.

There is nothing particularly innovative about Pitbull’s mélange of Latin-flecked pop-rap. Still, his boundless energy and positive outlook on life – the words “kindness,” “love,” “honesty” and “success” flipped across the v ideo screen during “Time Of Our Lives” – is admirable.

“If someone is being negative to you, it means they want to be you,” he said, while later talking about the Sports Leadership and Management charter school – with free tuition – he opened in Miami in 2013.

Though Pitbull, 42, released the new album “Trackhouse” earlier this month, his giddy set mostly focused on his adrenalized hits with only the Lil Jon collaboration “Jumpin’” representing a current offering.

Pitbull donned a red jacket for “Gasolina,” his pairing with Daddy Yankee – shown on video - and popped on a glamorous cowboy hat to accompany his decade-old No. 1 smash with Kesha , “Timber.”

Before the zingy “Fireball,” Pitbull addressed the crowd in English and Spanish, patting his chest and smiling in gratitude.

Enrique Iglesias jokes – maybe – that this is his last tour

Emerging from a halo of haze and lasers, the slender Iglesias dove into “Tonight (I’m Loving You),” alternating its chorus with the more profane version of the song as he zipped down the catwalk, his seven band members and two backup singers providing musical heft.

Clad in his usual uniform of sleeves-rolled-up work shirt, trucker hat and slouchy zippered pants, Iglesias poured his sultry voice over "Duele el Corazón" – hand raised in a swimming motion as he bathed in the rhythm – and the gliding “Bailamos,” his first crossover hit from 1999.

Percussionist Gilmar Gomes quickly proved the MVP of the band, as apt to stand atop his setup and provide a midsong rap as he was to smack his congas.

Gomes joined Iglesias and some of his other band members at a B-stage at the back of the arena – where Iglesias would return toward the end of his set as well –  for the seductive “Cuando Me Enamoro” paired with “Loco” and “Me Pasé,” that lilting ache in Iglesias’ voice such a hallmark of his ballads.

“This might be the last tour for me. (I'm) getting old,” Iglesias, 48, said, possibly kidding. He also mentioned in 2021 that his “Final, Vol. 1” album might be his last, but a “Final Vol. 2” is due soon.

Back on the main stage, Iglesias alternated between standing on the railing of the two raised platforms on opposite edges of the stage and crouching to get closer to fans during “Escape,” which dovetailed into the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This”), a thundering combination of drums, colored lasers and frenetic lights.

Though the whispery “Hero” – a phones in the air moment, of course – slowed the heartbeat of the set, Iglesias ended with a celebratory rendition of his massive 2014 hit, “Bailando,” accompanied by balloons adorned with his initials dropped from the ceiling and lively vocal supplement from the crowd.

Ricky Martin adeptly showcases sex and swagger

Always a vigorous showman , Martin unleashed his sonorous voice on the opening "Pégate" and his elaborate choreography with his seven dancers – male and female – on the fizzy "María" with unfettered glee.

Primal percussion bolstered the booming sound from his nine-piece band, including a snappy trio of brass players, as Martin, in baggy black pants and a sheer black shirt that would soon be stripped down to a sweaty gray tank top, slithered around the stage.

His hips were on auto-swivel during a feverish, horn-infused “Shake Your Bon-Bon” featuring Martin brandishing his tattooed biceps, while the still goofily fun “She Bangs” found him encircled by his dancers as he romped through the song, full of sex and swagger.

Martin, 51, knows how to sell a ballad as effortlessly as he moves and his eyes-scrunched-closed renditions of “Tu Recuerdo,” accompanied by lovely acoustic guitar, and “Vuelve,” were impassioned drama.

As the stage glowed “Wicked” green, three of his dancers presented an intricate number using their flowing skirts as props before Martin appeared, swaying his arms in the air throughout “Por Arriba, Por Abajo” and emphasizing lyrics with a graceful body swoop or furrowed brow.

Of course, Martin will never escape the worldwide recognition that comes with the opening horn bleats of “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” and his fun, fiery rendition of his 1999 English breakthrough smash fulfilled every hope.

Are you ready to live la vida loca, bailando and pump that gasolina? Latin music and pop superstars Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull are joining forces for an arena tour that’s sure to heat up the coldest of fall and winters.

The Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-winning solo artists will bring the heat to 19 cities throughout North America on their just-announced Trilogy Tour , which will features full headlining sets from all three singers when it kicks off in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 14.

“Fans can expect an unforgettable night of music as the megastars deliver an electrifying mix of their biggest career-spanning hits with influences of reggaeton, salsa pop, dance, and electronic music, backed by world-class production and state-of-the-art visuals,” concert promoter Live Nation announced Wednesday.

The crossover trio will make their way to California in late November to perform at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Nov. 30 and the SAP Center in San Jose on Dec. 6. The tour is set to wrap at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, on Dec. 10. But, according to Pitbull, it sounds as if it might continue beyond the United States and Canada after that.

Iglesias, the son of Spanish superstar Julio Iglesias and whose oeuvre includes the hits “Bailamos,” “Contigo” and “Be With You,” said that he’s “incredibly excited” to be touring with his friends again and promised an “amazing experience for ALL” of their fans. “It’s going to be a once in a lifetime tour,” he said.

In 2017, he and Pitbull embarked on a co-headlining tour that grossed more than $38 million. Then in 2021, Iglesias teamed with Martin , two icons of the late 1990s Latin music explosion , for a tour that grossed $35.2 million, according to Billboard .

"I listened to Pornography and Disintegration one weekend. I got very drunk": How Robert Smith completed The Cure's Dark Trilogy

For many, The Cure of the 1980s was that of smudged lipstick and funny pop songs, but albums like Pornography and Disintegration showed the reality was much darker

Robert Smith

In 1982, The Cure released Pornography – one of the bleakest records probably ever recorded, its tone set by the opening lyric ‘ It doesn’t matter if we all die… ’, while seven short years later (and this is after all the gleeful pop hits, remember) Disintegration would hit the shelves, its mood sombre and dark, and with a lyrical introduction (‘ I think it’s dark and it looks like rain… ’) to match its counterpart at the other end of the decade.

Almost 20 years on from Pornography , in 2000, Robert Smith sat down to think about where he wanted his band to go next. The last few records had been predominately upbeat affairs, and for some peculiar reason, he got to thinking about The Cure of the 1980s.

Thankfully, it wasn’t, but it took a Smith a foray into his 80s bleak period to figure out where he wanted to go next.

“I listened back to Pornography and Disintegration one particular weekend. I listened to them a couple of times each. I got very drunk. And got to thinking about what makes these records so special? They are always the two records that are brought up by Cure fans as being the ones that seem to symbolise everything they like about The Cure. And for me as well, they are probably the two key albums that define The Cure, so I wanted something to follow that.”

The resulting album was 2000’s Bloodflowers , similar in tone and mood to The Cure’s bleak, atmospheric 80s material. It also became the final chapter in what would become known as The Cure’s Dark Trilogy ( Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers ). However, this trilogy happened entirely by accident.

While spending that weekend drinking and rediscovering those earlier records, one thing that had never occurred to him before suddenly struck Smith.

“I realised that I did Pornography when I was just turning 20 – well, I was just 21 – and I did Disintegration when I was just turning into a 30-year-old man,” he says by way of explanation. “I was now heading toward my 40th birthday, so I thought I should probably do something that is a third part.

Upon rediscovering his bleak 80s muse, Smith found that both Pornography and Disintegration were (unwittingly) encroaching upon their live shows.

“We spent about nine months going around the world,” recalls Smith. “And we found ourselves playing a lot of the Pornography and Disintegration songs and a lot of the older, heavier stuff – it fitted in more with the mood of Bloodflowers . We hadn’t really done a tour like that for a long time, not since the Disintegration tour where we went on stage and we were playing really heavy sets. I just thought it was really good fun and it was the best tour I’d ever done. I thought this isn’t the end of the group as I’d previously been thinking – I just had to re-find what it was I liked about being in the group.”

Ironic, then, isn’t it that both Pornography and Disintegration were recorded at times when Smith was anything but a happy bunny. As Smith and the others – the line-up then included the perennial Simon Gallup on bass and Smith’s childhood friend Lol Tolhurst on drums and keyboards – have admitted, the Pornography sessions weren’t the most fun time. The band was on the verge of splitting, as Smith admitted to Rolling Stone .

With Phil Thornalley in the producer’s chair, the band set about making their artistic statement, as Smith said in last year’s Pornography reissue, “I wanted to make the ultimate fuck-off record. And then The Cure could stop. Phil was trying to make it too nice… I wanted it to be virtually unbearable. I needed this recording to be our grand statement, and in the course of making it I didn’t much care about anything or anyone else in the world.”

Smith doesn’t have particularly fond memories of that time, but does acknowledge that it’s one of The Cure’s finest hours. Funnily enough, it took the harrowing recording process and subsequent tour to make Smith realise that, contrary to possibly his own expectations, he didn’t want to be tagged as a doom and gloom monger. And that’s when the ideas sprang into his mind for the 80s day-glo material.

He returned to his parents’ home in Sussex, and set about playing around with the idea of a three-minute pop song. When he took a demo of Let’s Go To Bed into his record company, Smith admits that it wasn’t the most successful meeting he’d ever been to.

“They said, ‘You can’t be serious. Your fans are gonna hate it.’ I understood that, but I wanted to get rid of all that. I didn’t want that side of life anymore; I wanted to do something that’s really kind of cheerful. I thought, ‘This isn’t going to work. No one’s ever gonna buy into this. It’s so ludicrous that I’m gonna go from goth idol to pop star in three easy lessons’“.

And that’s exactly what he did. The chirpy pop single took both the US and UK by storm, and many new fans were confused as to what they found when they went exploring their favourite new band’s back catalogue.

Smith, meanwhile, just found it all faintly hilarious. His fanbase had entirely changed almost overnight. “It went from intense, menacing, psychotic goths to people with perfect white teeth. It was a very weird transition, but I enjoyed it. I thought it was really funny.”

“It’s almost like worrying that no-one’s gonna know who you are if you don’t have the same line-up. And it’s always been the case where I have been the most visible person in the band, for most of the time. But Simon [Gallup]’s been there on bass for pretty much all of the time I’ve been in the band apart from two, maybe three years [the period immediately following the Pornography tour] – he’s been the bass player in The Cure for more than 20 years.

"Cure fans know that, but I suppose the media as a whole just thinks it’s me and a bunch of others. I mean Porl, who’s in the band at the moment, has been in the band before – he was in the original band that did demos before we even recorded, so people just come and go. I mean Roger [O’Donnell, keyboards]’s been in the band before – he was in for Disintegration .”

As the time dawned to enter the studio for Disintegration , Smith suddenly became aware that he and his band had become everything he didn’t want to be. They had become a huge stadium rock band.

“It sounds really big-headed, but everyone wanted a piece of me,” Smith told Rolling Stone . “I was fighting against being a pop star, being expected to be larger than life all the time, and it really did my head in.

“I got really depressed, and I started doing drugs again – hallucinogenic drugs. When we were gonna make the album I decided I would be monk-like and not talk to anyone. It was a bit pretentious really, looking back, but I actually wanted an environment that was slightly unpleasant.”

Spotting a theme, anyone?

Finally Disintegration did get made, and it was quite a departure from 1987’s upbeat Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me . But that didn’t stop the upward ascendancy of The Cure – fans latched on as easily to the sombre Pictures Of You , spooky Lullaby or plaintive Lovesong (written by Smith as a wedding present to his wife Mary), as they had to Just Like Heaven or The Love Cats .

Again, they took to the road and despite Smith’s distaste about being a “stadium rock band”, the tour was a resounding success. The new material giving the band a chance to stretch out and enjoy themselves.

“Cure fans feel short-changed if we do anything less than two-and-a-half hours,” said Smith. “We’ve done festivals where we’ve had to come off after 90 minutes and it’s just awful, cos we’re just getting into it.”

After Disintegration , though, “most of the relationships within the band and outside of the band fell apart,” said Smith in 2004. “Calling it Disintegration was kind of tempting fate, and fate retaliated. The family idea of the group really fell apart too after Disintegration . It was the end of the golden period.”

It was also the end of the 1980s.

Things To Do Movies

May the fourth be with you: as national star wars day approaches, see how movies’ legacy lives on.

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford were the original trio in the 1977 film, "Star Wars: A New Hope." (AP Photo/ho)

Saturday, May 4, is National Star Wars Day . It’s about as official as an unofficial holiday can be.

Once just a silly little pun, the wordplay on the most famous phrase in the “Star Wars” universe has, in recent years, become recognized by city and state governments throughout the United States.

“Star Wars” itself has morphed and evolved in the 47 years since George Lucas first brought his vision for a space opera to the silver screen. Heavily influenced by Flash Gordon, the films of Kurosawa and John Ford’s Westerns, modern filmmakers now use “Star Wars” as their reference material.

Not bad for a film that even its creator feared would be a flop. The first film, later retitled “Star Wars: A New Hope,” was a mere 121 minutes, two hours of intergalactic fun. This week, counting the series finale of “Star Wars: Bad Batch,” Disney+ boasts 14-thousand minutes of “Star Wars” content. That adds up to nearly 10 full days of continuous viewing to get through the 234 hours of adventures, not counting the controversial “ Star Wars Holiday Special .”

Add to that nearly 400 books and story collections that expand the worlds of “Star Wars.”

Where it started

“Star Wars” debuted in theaters on May 25, 1977. After the success of “Jaws” two years earlier, movies expected to do well were released wide, in between five and 700 theaters. “Star Wars” opened in 43 . In fact, most theaters took it as a package deal, the mediocre film they had to run to get the big hits from Twentieth Century Fox.

That led to the now-famous images of people lined up around the block, waiting for hours to see the film. Some, including a truck driver named James Cameron, came out and immediately got in line to see it again. Despite the crowds, it still took a minute to catch on. The most famous theater at the time, Mann’s Chinese on Hollywood Boulevard, only had “Star Wars” because William Friedken’s “Sorcerer” was delayed.

Famously, George Lucas so expected the film to flop, especially after being dragged over the coals by his film school buddies at a private screening, he went on vacation in Hawaii with Stephen Spielberg, where the seeds were planted that would become “ Raiders of the Lost Ark .”

In the heat of summer, “Star Wars” was playing on more than 1000 screens — and stayed in theaters for more than a year. It was re-released with minor changes (like the title change) four times — 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1982. In 1997, Lucas released the much-maligned Special Edition trilogy in theaters.

All told, the original film grossed $460 million. That sounds pretty tame by today’s box office standards, but adjusted for inflation, it’s more than $1.9 billion in 2024 dollars . Taking into account its inflation-adjusted budget and box office gross. That adds up to about a 2,396% profit.

The prequel generation

In 1999, “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” made the term “prequel” a household word. Going back to his notes from his original idea, “The Adventures of Luke Starkiller,” as taken from the “Journal of the Whills, Saga I: The Star Wars,” Lucas decided to tell the origin story of his most famous villain: Darth Vader.

The movie grossed more than $474 million, but received a Rotten Tomatoes critical score of only 52%. Fans weren’t thrilled with the 9-year-old protagonist, the 5-year age disparity between him and his future wife, and the mish-mash of politics and government machinations. While most liked the addition of Qui-Gon Jin, Darth Maul and various members of the Jedi council, they hated Jar Jar Binks and his Gungan compatriots. The highest praise was reserved for Ewan McGregor playing a pitch-perfect younger iteration of Obi Wan Kenobi.

The film’s success was largely attributed to nostalgia and a desire to return to “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” even if it didn’t quite match up with the expectations of its now more-mature audience.

Regardless, the success allowed Lucas to finish out the prequel trilogy. Maybe the movies didn’t connect as strongly with original fans, it definitely became the touchstone for their kids. “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith” brought a new generation to join forces with the old, and together drove “Star Wars” to even higher heights.

Part of the new, younger world was more detailed, and canonized animation. Fans got to dig deeper into the Clone Wars, thanks to a film and two animated series. The longer form “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated series would usher writer-director Dave Filoni formally into the “Star Wars” creator sphere — something that would pay off in spades in the decades to come.

The Disney-fication of it all

In October 2012, George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Co. for just over $4 billion. The House of Mouse had been partnering with Lucasfilm all the way back in 1989 when Star Wars-MGM Studios was launched as the newest theme park in the Disney World Orlando complex. But this was something new. Not just props, merchandise, and Star Tours rides. Disney was going to complete the vision Lucas had for a final trilogy — or so they said.

In 2015, self-proclaimed “Star Wars” fanboy JJ Abrams, known for “Alias,” “Super 8,” and launching the Star Trek Kelvin timeline, brought us “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The film was a huge success; the first “Star Wars” film to nearly crack $1 billion at the box office. For better or worse, it did not follow the outlines Lucas sold to Disney for the last third of his ennealogy.

There were criticisms of the film, largely that the story in many ways too closely reflected the very first movie. Too much fan service, some said; others complained there wasn’t enough — and why did they make a woman and a disgraced Stormtrooper the main characters? Still, most were happy to see Han and Chewie and Leia again, were curious about the new Supreme Leader and a few new additions to the mythology.

The films that followed did not go as well. While “Rogue One” is often considered the best of the Disney era films, it’s also the least “Star Wars”-like in many ways. Set before the events of the original trilogy — it literally ends as Vader strides into his first scene of “A New Hope” — it focused on the grittier, war aspects of the galactic conflict that was about to erupt.

How it’s going

Abrams handed off the film reins to Rian Johnson. Having established himself with Looper and Brick, fans should have expected some subversion of expectations. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is the most polarizing of all the “Star Wars” filmed properties. Either you love it or hate it.

“Last Jedi” was quickly followed by another look into “Star Wars” past — the origins of everyone’s favorite scruffy nerf herder, Han Solo. Cowritten by Lawrence Kasden, who penned “Empire” and “Jedi,” and switching out directors mid-stream, Solo is a bit unbalanced, answering questions no one was asking, while trying to tie together disparate pieces of the “Star Wars” universe. It’s the lowest-grossing “Star Wars” film — by a long shot.

That didn’t bode well for the final movie at the time. Trying to redeem or explain the events of “Last Jedi” and cater to the nostalgia of fans, “The Rise of Skywalker” managed to bobble both. It’s not a horrible film, it just struggles to find itself and pales in comparison to what came before. It did worse at the box office and with critics than any other Skywalker-centric film. Even bringing back the Emperor couldn’t help.

As Disney-Lucasfilm canceled several previously-announced projects, “Star Wars” seemed bound for the scrap heap of fond memories, tainted by overstaying its welcome.

The rise of Disney+

That’s when Dave Filoni stepped back in. Soon to be crowned the chief creative officer of Lucasfilm, Filoni, with the help of “Iron Man” and “Lion King” director Jon Favreau, made the transition from award-winning animated “Star Wars” shows to award-winning, live-action “Star Wars” shows.

Disney+, the entertainment giant’s new streamer needed a flagship show. Filoni and Favreau put their heads together and we got “The Mandalorian.” Set in the years immediately after “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” the show managed to capture the gold standard set by the original trilogy, while at the same time successfully connecting pieces and parts of the “Star Wars” universe in a way the other Disney films failed to do.

It also introduced easily the most popular character in the “Star Wars” universe, at least according to search engine stats compiled by 1337 Games — everyone fell in love with Baby Yoda, aka Grogu.

“The Mandalorian,” “Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka,” “Andor” and “Obi-Wan” not only launched Disney+ to Netflix-level streaming domination, they resurrected the “Star Wars” brand. Sure, there have been some hiccups, but for the most part, it’s the most successful “Star Wars” storytelling since the heyday of the original trilogy.

Later this year, we’ll see “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” and The Acolyte on Disney+. Shortly thereafter, The Mandalorian and Grogu returns the franchise to the big screen. The second (and final?) seasons of both “Andor” and “Ahsoka” should arrive in 2025 as well. And, Rey Skywalker is making her way back too.

Until then, novels, comics, video games, Disney Park’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, celebrations and anniversaries will keep fans invested in the Galaxy Far Far Away. “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” returns to theaters this weekend for its 25th anniversary. Tickets for Star Wars Celebration Japan , happening in the land of the rising sun in April 2025, went on sale yesterday.

“Star Wars” is here to stay, so May the Fourth, er, Force be with you.

The 'Lord of the Rings' Trilogy Returns to Theaters This Summer

If you didn't get to see the famous extended cuts on the big screen, this is your chance.

The Big Picture

  • The extended Lord of the Rings trilogy is returning to theaters nationwide on June 8, 9, and 10 remastered for best quality.
  • Extended versions add essential elements and backstory not in the original cuts due to time constraints.
  • The Return of the King has the longest runtime at 263 minutes, providing a thorough viewing experience.

As any Lord of the Rings fan will tell you, it is never a bad time to go there and back again to Middle Earth and revisit the adventures of Frodo ( Elijah Wood ), Gandalf ( Ian McKellen ) and Legolas ( Orlando Bloom ) as they embark on the nearly impossible mission of destroying the One Ring in the fire of Mordor before it makes its way back to Sauron. With that in mind, Warner Bros. announced today that it teamed up with Fathom Events in order to give fans a treat: The extended trilogy directed by Peter Jackson is making a special return to theaters with one installment getting screened a day on June 8, 9 and 10.

Fathom Events announced that the screenings are a celebration of the remastered editions of the movies, meaning that fans will also get to see the trilogy in the best possible quality. As extended versions go, the Lord of the Rings are among the most celebrated ones . This happened not only because the movies spawned a huge fanbase for the epic saga, but also because they add important elements and moments to the story that never made it to the original theatrical cut due to a sheer lack of time.

For die-hard Lord of the Rings fans, the extended versions of the movies are the only acceptable way of rewatching the adventure , and people who never powered through it will finally have the chance to find out why . In The Fellowship of the Ring , for example, you'll get to know a lot more about Hobbit culture and the Shire, while in The Two Towers the unforgettable Helm's Deep Battle gets a lot more intricate. In The Return of the King , we get to see Saruman ( Christopher Lee ) again, and the ending... well, it's still pretty lengthy.

How Long Are The 'Lord of the Rings' Extended Versions?

The further you get in the trilogy, the longer are the cuts that Peter Jackson reserved for each movie . In The Fellowship of the Ring , the original 178-minute cut gets expanded to a generous 228 minutes. In The Two Towers , the already hefty 179-minute runtime is pushed to 235 minutes. Jackson went all out with The Return of the King , with the 201-minute run becoming a full-blown 263 minutes — a four-hour and twenty-three minute binge that will ask a little too much of your bladder .

The return of the trilogy to theaters is a good way to keep fans at bay while they wait for Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power . The Prime Video series is currently on a long hiatus and without a release window officially announced. However, the showrunners are already working on Season 3 , which may suggest that a 2025 release window for Season 2 wouldn't be too improbable.

Warner Bros. and Fathom Events will screen the extended Lord of the Rings trilogy on June 8, 9 and 10. You can purchase tickets on the Fathom Events website .
