“From my first phone conversation with Jon I knew we would have a great experience. And WOW what a great time my wife and I had. Jon and Thomas did everything to insure we had a great time. We stopped and took lots of pictures of scenery and wildlife. My wife was a little afraid of getting cold but the clothing they provided kept us warm, never got cold! We would definitely choose Old Faithful again and would recommend them to anyone looking for a wonderful experience in Yellowstone. Steve & Connie Pate”

Visited January 2014

“Me and my wife were very impressed with our first winter vacation and trip into Yellowstone Park. Jon and Senne did a excellent job in preparing us and providing for us through out the trip. We wasn’t sure what to expect but Jon as our guide couldn’t have done anything different to have made it any better. He is very knowledgeable of the facts of Yellowstone and enjoys his job. It was one of our top vacation experiences. Most amazing views and scenery that we could have asked for. We can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed the hospitality and experience we received from Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours.”

“What a wonderful adventure! Special thanks to Senne for providing us with all the information needed to make this trip one to remember. Our three day all inclusive tour was truly that! We were warm, well fed, and expertly cared for from start to finish. Our guide, Thomas, was extremely knowledgable and focused on ensuring a great experience to our entire group. We are already talking about returning for the Continental Divide tour and would definitely request Thomas to be our guide! Thanks from NJ!!”

“An outstanding experience thanks to the team at Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours for their expert handling of our tour of Yellowstone. Experience makes the difference and this team has it. The beauty of Jackson Hole, Yellowstone and the Tetons is just [majestic], the wildlife… amazing. Most recent trip was for my Mom’s 70th birthday. She’s been six times. It’s her favorite thing, especially because of our guide, owner Jon Toolson. Experience it for yourself. It’s remarkable. Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours handles everything and makes it so great.”

Visited February 2013

“My husband, two teenage daughters, and I decided to travel to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to take a 3 day snowmobile trip through Yellowstone National Park. We chose Old Faithful Snowmobile Tours. It was the most awesome experience!! We are from the South and aren’t used to such cold temperatures. Old Faithful staff prepared us so well for the trip…Our guide was Tony Mayer and he was awesome. He definitely loves what he does and it shows. He gave us so much information about the park, the wildlife, and the state. We will be talking about this trip for many years to come.”

Melanie, SC, January 2014

“Everything about this trip was exciting and fun, with a great tour guide, sights, and company. The tour guide, Jon, was very [knowledgeable], professional, and personal. He made everyone feel comfortable on the snowmobile and had an answer for all our questions. The company provided plenty of gear to keep us warm, and the pace of the tour was not difficult but kept us all moving. It was the most fun I have had on a winter vacation.”

Yellowstone Geysers Tour

Old faithful winter tour.

yellowstone snowmobile tours from bozeman

Destination

Enjoy a catered experience of Yellowstone National Park’s interior, where incredible volcanic features such as geysers and hot springs create a mystical world amidst the backdrop of winter’s beauty.

  • Old Faithful
  • Snowcoach Excursion to Yellowstone’s Interior
  • Winter Landscapes & Geothermal Wonders

Yellowstone is unique year-round, but perhaps most notably in the wintertime. This high-elevation volcanic plateau experiences deep cold and heavy snowfall, but simultaneously exhibits some of the most visible volcanic features on the planet. Hot water rises from geysers, springs, vents and gurgling pots creating tornadoes of steam and a sense of surrealism. Eighty percent of Yellowstone is closed to the public in winter, and this tour allows us to visit these remote regions on specialized vehicles that roll over the snow.

*Tour availability is based on snowcoach availability with our partner. We will verify availability before confirming the tour.

Our full-day tour (accessing the interior of Yellowstone National Park from the north entrance or the west entrance) is led by our naturalist guides according to guest abilities and interests. Our guide will escort you in a Yellowstone Safari Co vehicle from your lodging to either Gardiner or West Yellowstone where we will join our group headed towards Old Faithful, by snowcoach. Our guide will provide educated and passionate interpretation of everything you encounter throughout the day including walks around several geyser basins, wildlife sightings, historic buildings and geologic features.  As our guest, you will be provided healthy and hearty snacks, a full picnic lunch, as well as the ultimate decadence of a steaming hot cocoa or coffee when you need it the most. Whether this is your first or tenth time to Yellowstone National Park, visiting in the winter will undoubtedly be an enjoyable and memorable experience.

On your journey to the park entrance and throughout the day, you may see some of North America’s largest mammals exhibiting some fascinating behaviors as they attempt to survive the harsh winter. Herbivores such as bison, elk, deer, moose and sheep, range openly throughout valleys, gorges and cliff-sides. Many raptors such as bald and golden eagles, falcons and hawks perch on trees or circle the skies searching for their next meal. Predators like wolves, coyotes and foxes are especially active in winter when their prey are at their weakest. Our guides will provide binoculars for you to use throughout your day in order to appreciate the beauty of these wild creatures safely from a distance.

Yellowstone Safari Company is incredible. They are extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife, the ecosystem and everything in-between. I had been to Yellowstone a dozen times with friends and family before going on a safari with them, and their trips are next level. You see things that you've never noticed before and are way more likely to see wildlife since they are in the park everyday and know the animals patterns. I can't recommend them enough!

A Coyote Walks Through Falling Snow In A Winter Landscape In Yellowstone National Park

All photography has been shot by our talented tour guides .

Will we be in a group with other people?

You’ll have a private tour from your pickup location to the snowcoach departure site at either the north or west entrance.  Then, your group and your Yellowstone Safari Company guide will join others on the snowcoach, which seat groups of up to 20 people. Your guide will offer you a personalized experience with information throughout the day, as well as transport to and from the snowcoach departure site.

How cold will it be in Yellowstone National Park in winter?

Yellowstone in winter can be very cold. We recommend wearing synthetic layers, including a very warm insulating layer and a waterproof/repellent wind layer, as well as warm wool hats and gloves. We will provide hand and foot warmers for you as well as hot drinks and food to keep you warm throughout the day.

Will we see Old Faithful erupt on this tour?

Yes, every trip includes an eruption of Old Faithful, which happens every 90 minutes or so. We will plan lunch around watching it erupt!

Will we see other geysers and hot springs on this tour?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to walk around several geyser basins to see these features up close.  We are able to observe many of these geothermal features in one area, and we will take time to explore and educate as we walk around, but we will not touch or enter any springs – it’s illegal to do so in the park!

One of the most common responses that I hear when I tell my summer-time clients about our winter wildlife safaris is: I didn’t even know that Yellowstone was open in the winter!  Not only is Yellowstone open, but winter is arguably one of the most spectacular times to visit!

Yellowstone in Winter

Feb 27, 2023.

As November approaches, a dramatic transformation occurs- the days shorten, the temperatures drop, the chance of snow escalates, and eventually, over 200 miles of roadway in the park will close to regular vehicle traffic.  Fortunately, this does not mean the entire park is inaccessible.

LOOKING FOR ANOTHER WAY SEE YELLOWSTONE?

Snowcoach Tours are one of the most popular ways to tour Yellowstone in winter. If that sounds like an appealing way to see Yellowstone National Park in winter, please also consider one of our Snowcoach Tours!

All snowmobile rentals require pre-payment by a Visa®, MasterCard®, Discover®, or American Express® credit card, which will be billed for the full cost of each rental, including tax. Unapproved credit card charges will result in reservation cancellation.

There is a $25 Damage Agreement per day per snowmobile with a $750 deductible. Theft insurance is the responsibility of the renter.

Cancellations must be received no later than 14 days before your scheduled rental to receive a refund. Cancellations or changes received less than 14 days before your arrival, including no-shows, will result in forfeiture of your refund. This cancellation policy is strictly enforced with no exceptions.

All snowmobile tours leave from West Yellowstone, and will meet on-site at the shop you booked through:

  • Bookings made through Yellowstone Vacation Tours meet at 415 Yellowstone Avenue, right next door to the Holiday Inn® West Yellowstone.
  • Bookings made through Two Top Snowmobile meet at 645 Gibbon Avenue, on the corner of Gibbon and Iris.

You will definitely need some durable snowmobile clothing to protect your body from the elements. We have the following equipment available to rent for all riders:

  • Snowmobile boots
  • Snowmobile suit

A DOT-approved helmet is included with your rental.

Winter clothing can be reserved when you call to book your tour, and you will then be sized on-site when you arrive. With the winter gear mentioned, most riders will be comfortable enough wearing jeans, a long sleeve shirt and thermal underwear. If you’d like to dress warmer you are certainly welcome to, but we suggest dressing in layers so you can better regulate your own personal temperature.

All of our snowmobiles are automatics, so you don’t need to worry about shifting gears or doing anything crazy. Before your tour departs, your guide will give you a full orientation on how each of the simple controls work, as well as what to expect while riding in town and inside the park.

Just follow your guide’s lead. When you ride through Yellowstone National Park, all snowmobile riders must stay single file. That way, your guide is leading the “train,” always in front. If the guide slows down or stops, just do what they do and listen for their instruction.

There are three items that we recommend all snowmobile riders purchase or bring with you prior to meeting up for your tour; some warm ski gloves, a balaclava, and a boxed lunch.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own ski gloves. We do have a few loaner pairs available, but sizes and availability are not guaranteed.

Balaclavas are those ninja mask-style head gear that you may have seen before, and will provide some much-appreciated warmth to the one area of your body that will otherwise be left partially exposed — your face! We sell balaclavas on-site at Yellowstone Vacation Tours if you don’t have your own.

Additionally, food service inside the park is extremely limited during the winter months, and since this is a full day tour, you would do well to purchase a boxed lunch before you head out. Boxed lunches can be reserved directly through Yellowstone Vacation Tours when you call in to book your tour, but must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance so they can be ready for pick-up on the morning of your tour.

A backpack might be a good idea, especially if you are purchasing the recommended boxed lunches. A limited number of backpacks are available on-site, or you are welcome to bring your own. Wool socks are also a good investment for outdoor winter activities. You will also need a Park Pass for your Snowmobile Tour (one pass per snowmobile).

  • Lower Geyser Basin , home to geysers, hot springs and mud pools—including the often-photographed Fountain Paint Pots.
  • Firehole Canyon, cut through 800-foot lava flows. In the summer, park visitors are drawn to the waterfall and swimming hole, but in winter it’s a quiet, beautiful place to explore.

On your journey, you’ll stop at Madison Junction . It’s an ideal spot to get off your snowmobile, hang out in a warming hut, and enjoy a break along your journey.

Our guests rave about touring Yellowstone National Park via snowcoach…and for good reason. Snowcoaches have been part of the Park since 1955, allowing families to see all of the sights in style and comfort. Your day-long winter tour will include:

“Grand Canyon” of Yellowstone by Snowmobile

Although Yellowstone National Park is known for Old Faithful, there are many beautiful natural sights to see year-round, including “the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.” They become even more memorable when you view them via snowmobile. Never driven a snowmobile?  No problem. We will teach you everything you need to know. During your full-day tour, you’ll see:

  • Norris Geyser Basin , which features Steamboat Geyser. While it doesn’t run “on time” as much as Old Faithful, Steamboat is the tallest geyser anywhere on the globe. It’s spectacular any time of year.
  • The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a must-see phenomenon in winter. You’ll be captivated by the snow clinging to the canyon walls and the ice bridge that forms at the bottom. It’s definitely a “bucket list” location.
  • If time allows, Hayden Valley will also be a stop on your route. It is here that you will often find photo-worthy bison herds, elk and other animals.

All of our winter tours include a stop at Madison Junction . You can stretch your legs, take a bathroom break and talk with other Park visitors in a warming hut.

✓ Lunch is Provided ✓ Tour includes Guide Fee and Park Approved Snowmobile ✓ Total Tour Time is About 8 Hours

Where can I go snowmobiling near Big Sky?

A number of outfitters in the area offer both guided tours and snowmobile rentals. We recommend going with a guide if you are unfamiliar with the sport or the area. If you head out on your own, here are a few nearby trails to explore:

  • Big Sky Snowmobile Trail This 123 mile trail links Bozeman (from Little Bear Creek) to West Yellowstone (at Grayling Creek). Portions of the trail are groomed and you can cut off at trailheads along the way, including Squaw Creek, Moose Creek, Buffalo Horn Creek, and Taylor Fork.
  • Buck Creek Ridge Just south of Big Sky, guided snowmobile tours offer trips up Buck Creek Ridge where you'll enjoy views of the Spanish Peaks and Lone Mountain.
  • West Yellowstone Known as a snowmobiling mecca, West Yellowstone has hundreds of groomed trails and wide open powder fields. Try a ride to Two Top Mountain for great views or head into Idaho via the Continental Divide Trail and explore the South Plateau Trail.
  • Yellowstone National Park Snowmobiles entering Yellowstone National Park must be part of a guided tour. Enjoy scenic vistas of thermal features and wildlife. A ride in the park is about scenery! If you are looking for speed and wide open powder fields, head to West Yellowstone, Island Park, or backcountry areas near Big Sky.

The 4 Best Yellowstone Winter Tours from Bozeman: A Complete Guide

' src=

Last Updated on February 10, 2024

Ah, winter in Yellowstone National Park – a magical time when the snow blankets the landscape, transforming it into a peaceful, winter wonderland.

Along with many others who have been, I find winter in Yellowstone to be one of the best ways to experience the park, especially when you’re coming from the North Entrance by way of Bozeman.

For starters, the cold of winter encourages the wildlife in Yellowstone to come down into the valleys (like Lamar Valley), making it much easier to spot bison, bald eagles, elk, white-tailed deer, mountain goats, you name it.

On top of that, Yellowstone National Park is a completely different place in winter versus summer, with its snowcapped mountains, pure white landscape, and almost moody/enchanted feel.

Bison grazing on a snowy hillside in Yellowstone National Park

As someone who’s traveled to the area plenty of times (and recently) and experienced both Bozeman and Yellowstone in all their snowy white beauty, let’s just say I know a thing or two about the tours and how to make the best of your trip.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the best winter Yellowstone tours to choose from that leave from Bozeman, Montana.

If you need more tips on getting to Yellowstone from Bozeman, what to wear to Yellowstone in the winter, and why you should choose a tour from Bozeman in the first place, I’ve provided a deeper dive at the end of this article. Enjoy!

Some of the links in this post are affiliate links for services I have used and love. Any purchase you make through them supports the page at no extra cost to you. Thanks!

Short on Time?

If you don’t have time to read this entire article, the #1 best-rated winter tour of Yellowstone from Bozeman is this private Yellowstone Winter Wildlife Safari Tour .

Table of Contents

The 4 Best Yellowstone National Park Tours from Bozeman, Montana

Yellowstone winter wildlife safari (private tour).

Moose walking in the Gallatin Mountain Range area in Yellowstone National Park

If you’re looking to visit Yellowstone National Park in the winter specifically to see wildlife, then this tour is easily one of the best private tours around. I booked this private tour with my brother in February 2024 and was very glad I did.

Booking this private safari tour meant we were able to go around the park at our own pace, taking more time at spots we enjoyed the most (like the geysers or in Lamar Valley) to get out, take some of the best photos I’ve ever taken, and just observe the amazing views around us.

Sure, we could have booked a group tour with other people to save money. But when you’re out in Yellowstone National Park trying to see wildlife, the last thing you want to worry about is having to work around other travelers’ schedules, interests, demands, complaints, etc.

Because winter in Yellowstone tends to be very cold and sometimes heavy with snowfall, only 50 miles of road are open for access from November through April.

Bison crossing a road in Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park

With this private wildlife safari tour by Yellowstone Safari Co., you’ll get a private & full-day (about 8 hours) driven tour around the northern end of the park. Because it’s a private tour, you can choose your itinerary, depending on road conditions and closures of course.

For my tour, I chose to head straight to Lamar Valley at sunrise so I could get some amazing photos of all the wildlife and the scenery with that sweet golden-hour lighting. From there, we headed to explore Mammoth Springs, the Boiling River, and some other nice parts of the area. I also had to get some pics of the famous Roosevelt Arch, right at the north entrance.

All in all, this is my favorite tour from Bozeman and a great way to visit Yellowstone in the winter. My tour guide/driver, Gabrielle, was super friendly and gave me fun facts about the park as we drove around.

Yellowstone Snowshoe Safari from Bozeman (Private Tour)

People snowshoeing on a snowy trail in Yellowstone National Park

Looking to get a bit more action while you’re out in Yellowstone? Then going on this snowshoe safari tour is an excellent way to do exactly that.

Sure, winter probably isn’t the first season that comes to mind when you think of going for a morning walk through the woods. However, by using the age-old technology of snowshoes, you’ll be able to go out for some of the best hiking you’ll ever do as you explore the north region of winter Yellowstone National Park on foot.

On top of being more active and immersed in the park, there are many reasons why people (myself included) love this private tour.

For starters, you have the best chances of seeing wildlife from an up-close (yet safe) distance, as all the animals come down into the plains for the winter. Wintertime is (much) less busy compared to the summertime, so you can essentially have each route and trail all to yourself during your tour!

To top it all off, you have an expert naturalist guiding you as much (or as little) for a personalized experience, so you can learn more about the amazing things that you see along the way. This snowshoe tour starts at the northern entrance and takes you through Paradise Valley, Lamar Valley (great for wildlife sightings), Mammoth Hot Springs, and the Roosevelt Arch.

Wolf Watching & Wildlife Safari (Private Tour)

A grey wolf in Yellowstone National Park

Just about all areas of Yellowstone are teaming with wildlife, from the west entrance to the east and of course, up at the northern entrance of this huge park. But while the bison, elk, bald eagles, and even bears are all amazing to see, some people come to Yellowstone specifically for a chance to see the wolves in their natural habitat.

Maybe you’re one of these people. If so, then this tour is likely the best option for you: it specifically focuses on finding wolves throughout the park.

For most of this private tour , you (and your party if applicable) will be guided by a wildlife biologist/ecologist through Lamar Valley, which is famously known as the Serengeti of Yellowstone due to the high concentration of wildlife that call this area home.

While a bison, elk, or even a moose is fairly easy to spot, wolves are very elusive and therefore rare to see if you’re just any regular ‘ole person trying to spot them. But with your tour guide being a biologist/ecologist specifically focusing on Yellowstone, you’ll have darn good chances of seeing these amazing predators during your trip.

Some past customers of this tour say it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime documentary-style trips. I couldn’t agree more.

6-Day Winter Wonderland Tour of Yellowstone (Private Tour)

White SUV driving through Yellowstone Park in the winter

If you’ll be in the Bozeman/Yellowstone area for an extended time and want a truly immersive experience in Yellowstone, there’s arguably no better way than doing a six-day tour, like this one.

Led by an expert guide from the Bindlestiff Tours group (which has raving reviews), this in-depth tour takes you on a journey through almost the entire park, starting with North Yellowstone, then towards the West Entrance, and even taking you through Grand Teton National Parks.

This tour even includes your stay in a Gardiner hotel as well as West Yellowstone lodges each night as you make your way toward that side of the park.

With six days to explore, this means you’ll have a unique opportunity to experience all that these parks have to offer.

You’ll get a chance to snowshoe around Mammoth Hot Springs, go cross-country skiing through Bunsen Peak, go on a wolf tracking tour with an expert wolf tracker, ride over snow vehicles to West Yellowstone, visit the Wolf and Grizzly Bear Center, see Old Faithful & the geyser basins, visit the snow-covered Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, go dog sledding in the snow, and more.

As one of the few tours that takes you beyond the northern Yellowstone Park area and to the west, there’s nothing like it out there. I did this tour back in 2022 and it was one of the best adventures I’ve ever experienced, hands down.

Highlights: Best Things to See From Yellowstone National Park’s North Entrance

From Yellowstone’s North Entrance, which is located right outside of the small town of Gardiner, Montana, you’ll have direct access to some of the most famous features and amazing landscapes in Yellowstone Park. Here are some of the best things to see and do from this entrance:

As the gateway town to the park, Gardiner offers a nice range of services, including lodging, dining, and shopping. It’s a great base for just about any Yellowstone adventure, especially in the winter months when elk congregate in the area.

Mammoth Hot Springs

Just a short drive from the North Entrance, Mammoth Hot Springs is a must-see. This area is famous for its terraced limestone pools that are created by hot water coming up from the ground and depositing calcium carbonate.

The area also has several walking paths and boardwalks that allow you to explore the unique geological formations up close. It’s amazing to see, even in the winter!

Roosevelt Arch

The Roosevelt Arch at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park

The iconic stone arch at the North Entrance, dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, serves as a historic gateway to the park. It’s a popular spot for photos and marks the beginning of your Yellowstone trip.

Sure it’s a manmade structure at an otherwise nature-oriented park, but it’s well worth the visit! You might as well make a quick stop since it’s on the way in and out.

Lamar Valley

Close up of a bison in Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park

Known as America’s Serengeti, the Lamar Valley is a bit of a drive from the North Entrance but well worth it for wildlife viewing. I saw hundreds of bison just hanging out by the road in this area, along with many other animals.

Early morning or late evening are the best times to see bison, elk, pronghorn, and even wolves in their natural habitat, especially in winter months.

Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District

Besides the natural wonders of this area, Mammoth Hot Springs includes a historic district with buildings that date way back to the early days of the park. The Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Fort Yellowstone are part of this district, giving you a glimpse into the park’s past.

Pro tip: Stop at the general store in the area to grab some Yellowstone souvenirs!

Boiling River

Near the North Entrance, the Boiling River offers a unique natural hot springs experience that’s completely free (aside from the cost of entry into the park). A section of the Gardner River mixes with hot springs, creating a relaxingly warm soaking area.

Just remember to check if it’s open for swimming since the park closes this area sometimes due to inclement weather conditions.

Drive the Upper Loop

Man in yellow jacket looking out into the mountainscape of Yellowstone National Park

The North Entrance is a great starting point for exploring Yellowstone’s Upper Loop, which includes attractions like the Calcite Springs Overlook, offering views of the Yellowstone River Canyon, and the Petrified Tree, showcasing an ancient landscape.

Spot Wildlife

Of course, no trip to Yellowstone would be complete without taking some time to see all the amazing animals that call this park home. You can almost always see some form of wildlife walking through the snow on either side of your vehicle as you drive through the park.

If you can, try to take pics during golden hour (sunrise or sunset), where the animals, the snow-covered mountains, and the whole scenery have a soft warm glow to them.

Why Choose a Yellowstone Tour from Bozeman?

People walking across the street in downtown Bozeman, Montana

Bozeman, a charming little town in southwestern Montana, serves as one of the best gateways to Yellowstone in winter.

The town itself is a nice blend of culture, great restaurants , good coffee , and nature nearby, making it a comfy and easy starting point for your winter adventures to the park.

How to Get to Yellowstone From Bozeman

To get to Yellowstone National Park’s North Entrance, the most direct route from Bozeman takes you through the scenic Paradise Valley. Begin by traveling east on I-90 towards Livingston, then head south on US Highway 89.

This stretch of road offers amazing views through the valley, framed by the Absaroka and Gallatin mountain ranges. The drive is roughly 80 miles and typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and conditions.

Once you reach Gardiner, Montana, you’ll be greeted by that iconic Roosevelt Arch, which marks the historic North Entrance to the park. This is the only entrance to the park that stays open year-round.

The route from Bozeman directly to Yellowstone’s North Entrance is not only efficient but also gives you a head start on views, with that amazing Montana mountainscape setting the stage for the adventure you’re about to have in Yellowstone.

Lucky for you, all the tours on this list include transportation to and from Bozeman, with pickup options directly from your hotel/lodging.

Planning Your Yellowstone National Park Tour: Tips and Considerations

  • Choose the Right Tour: As you just read, there are a decent number of tours you can choose from for your winter Yellowstone adventure. Just be sure to pick the right one. For example: if hiking through the snow doesn’t sound fun to you or if you’re just not physically capable, it would be best to opt for a driven tour for your trip instead.
  • Dress Appropriately: The winter in Yellowstone can be extremely cold. Make sure you are well-equipped with warm clothing, waterproof boots, and enough layers so you can stay cozy during your trip.
  • Wildlife Etiquette: While wildlife sightings are a highlight, it’s important to respect the animals and maintain a safe distance. I’m sure we’ve all heard those stories of people getting too close to the bison.

Final Thoughts: Winter Yellowstone Tours from Bozeman

Snow-covered bison walking in Yellowstone National Park

A Yellowstone winter tour from Bozeman is more than just a trip; it’s an unforgettable experience where the raw beauty of nature in winter is all yours for the taking.

No matter which Yellowstone tour from Bozeman you decide to choose, visiting the park in winter is always a great choice and will likely be one of the best experiences you’ve ever had.

I’m always around if you have any questions, so feel free to leave a comment or send me a message on Instagram . Cheers, and have a great time!

West Yellowstone Snowmobile Trails

The West Yellowstone area provides a wide range trails that meet the demands of beginning, intermediate, and experienced riders. Whether you prefer steady, mellow cruising with few elevation changes, or you are craving the powdery steeps, there are plenty of options to suit your taste.

  • Two Top Trail is a popular choice for its variety of terrain and 2,000 foot elevation gain. The trail is groomed, and powder fields abound. From the upper areas, the surrounding mountain ranges come into view, including the Wyoming's Tetons, Idaho's Centennial Mountains, Lionshead in Montana, and Yellowstone National Park. Bring a camera to take advantage of the photo opportunities!
  • The Big Sky Trail provides some of the best backcountry snowmobiling in Montana. This 110-mile trail begins just north of West Yellowstone. The first portion is groomed, but the trail quickly turns into an ungroomed powder experience. Deep fields of snow, and outstanding hill climbing opportunities are the hallmark of this well-known and challenging trail.
  • Lionshead Trail offers an exciting experience for those seeking something more radical. Following the east side of the Continental Divide, the trail climbs to over 10,000 feet. Lionshead is short (10 miles), but sweet, with plenty of the steep terrain, very deep snow, and outstanding views.
  • Horse Butte Loop travels the shores of Hebgen Lake. This trail makes a pleasant excursion through thick pines and open meadows and along the lake.
  • South Plateau Trail heads south for 13 miles and provides great views of the area's mountains, following creeks and rivers away from the crowds.
  • The Continental Divide Trail offers a unique snow travel experience, connecting central Wyoming with our communitiy via Yellowstone National Park. The trail system begins near Lander, Wyoming at Sinks Canyon, and winds through the Wind River Mountains near Pinedale and Dubois. The trail then passes through Togwotee Pass and Moran before entering Grand Teton National Park in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The trail follows the Rockefeller Parkway and ends at Yellowstones southern entrance.

With so much snow, trail variety, and spectacular scenery, it is no wonder our destination consistently earns top reviews. West Yellowstone is truly the "Snowmobiling Capital of the World."

Snowmobiling

Go full throttle.

An alpine adrenaline rush is one way to slay winter. Power through pure powder in some of the most sought-after terrain. West Yellowstone has been called one of the best places to snowmobile on the planet. The season starts early and ends late, averaging 153 inches of dry, powdery snow each year. Cooke City is equally amazing, with late-season backcountry snowmobiling extending into June and sometimes even July. Spring days make for longer daylight hours and more riding. Snowpack usually sticks around longer than most areas, stretching out the season. Climb to Daisy Pass at 11,600 feet. Freeride Henderson Mountain. Explore old mining country, play in deep powder meadows and boondock through the trees. Come see what all the fuss is about.

Always check out the montana avalanche report before you head out. You can rent a transceiver with your sled, or take a guided tour from one of many outfitters in the area.

Fairy Lake Road - The Fairy Lake Road is often used by snowmobilers. It’s about 4.5 miles north of Bohart Ranch and just past the Battle Ridge Campground. Look for Fairy Lake Road on the left. Park just beyond the turn-off on the right.

Olsen Creek Trail - 24 Miles of trail with a beautiful view of the Bridger and Crazy mountains.

While the snowmobile season ends for most areas in March or April, Cooke City typically enjoys late-season powder, sometimes even stretching into June.

Doe Creek Trail - Great for beginners and leads into Buck Ridge Trail at the end.

Buck Ridge Trail - A favorite among locals, with 16 miles of groomed and maintained trails. There’s ample parking at the trailhead.

Taylor Fork - Groomed weekly in winter, there’s also a large parking area just off Highway 91.

West Yellowstone

Within just a few miles of West Yellowstone there are over 400 miles of trails for snowmobiling. A few favorites are:

  • Horse Butte Trail
  • Madison Arm Trail
  • Twin Creek Trail
  • Big Sky Trail
  • Lions Head Trail

Bozeman Makes One of the Best Snowmobile Vacations

Snowmobiling in the mountains is an adrenaline-pumping winter adventure that's easy to do in Bozeman. Just minutes from downtown, riders can be ripping it up in the backcountry, alternating between groomed trails, steep hill climbs, and wide-open meadows. It's easy to make Bozeman your base and explore different areas each day. If you have your own snowmobile, many hotels have ample parking for a snowmobile trailer and offer easy access from I-90.

Should you need a sled part (or even a new sled), there are several snowmobile dealers in town. Yellowstone Motorsports ,  Summit Motor Sports ,  Blitz Motorsports , and  Gallatin Recreation  have complete sales and service departments. If you prefer to rent a sled, Summit Motor Sports and  Big Boys Toys  offer rentals.

When it's time to pick a place to ride, the options are vast. The Bridger and Bangtail ranges, within a 30-minute drive from Bozeman, have great options for trips close to town. Farther up Gallatin Canyon and close to Big Sky, there are several rides, or for a truly unique experience, try a guided snowmobile tour in Yellowstone National Park.

Bridger and Bangtail Ranges

A half-hour drive up the beautiful Bridger Canyon takes you to miles of snowmobile trails, both groomed and ungroomed.

Brackett Creek

Brackett Creek has 15 miles of marked and groomed trails located approximately 18 miles from Bozeman. There are multiple options – some of them quite technical.

Battle Ridge

This ridgeline trail in the central Bridgers leads into Ross Pass and the Bridger Foothills National Recreation Area, which provides access to multiple connector trails.

Olson Creek

An excellent family-friendly ride, the trail begins just 13 miles north of Bozeman. The 5-mile loop is gentle yet beautiful and not super technical, so it's great for beginners and kiddos.

Gallatin Canyon

The iconic Gallatin Canyon is just as much fun to explore in the winter as it is in the summer.

Just off of Highway 191 south of Big Sky, you'll find this gem of a ride. The trailhead is located at the Corral Bar and Grill and takes you to spectacular views of the Spanish Peaks, Lone Mountain, and the Sphinx. Beginners should take the Doe Creek trail, which provides a gradual ascent to the ridge.

Big Sky Snowmobile Trail

The granddaddy of the area's trails, Big Sky Snowmobile Trail has something for every type of rider. For those who want to make the whole trip, it's 123 miles from Little Bear Creek to West Yellowstone. Some areas are groomed, while others have ungroomed powder. Cabin and Teepee Creek have open bowls with deep powder fields and access to a forest service cabin you can rent. Aggressive backcountry riders will love the hill climbing in this area. There are five access routes along the trail, making it easy to make shorter loops.

Yellowstone National Park

During the winter, most Yellowstone's park roads are closed to vehicular travel, and the only way to explore is by a guided snowmobile or snowcoach tour.

Bozeman is close to two of the entrances to Yellowstone: the north entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and the west entrance at West Yellowstone. Both towns have guides that offer tours into the park, and either is an excellent place for an overnight stay if you want to explore a bit. In addition, West Yellowstone has over 300 miles of trails outside the park if you're going to explore yourself!

You can find a list of National Park Service-approved tour companies  here .

Before heading out, always make sure you have proper layers of clothing, extra food, and water, and check the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center  for current conditions.
