Qatar Visa On Arrival: Requirements & Updates (2024)

Doha Guides Team regularly reviews this article to ensure the content is up-to-date and accurate. The last editorial review and update were on 02 February 2024.

Since August 2017, the State of Qatar has been allowing visa-free entry for citizens of more than 80 countries, making it the most open country in the Middle East.

After it was briefly suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19, Qatar’s visa-on-arrival service has resumed with some conditions. As of 2024, citizens of 90+ countries are eligible for a free Qatar Visa On Arrival.

This article explains all the requirements, eligible nationalities, application procedures, and visa renewal procedures, and answers the frequently asked questions about the free visa on arrival in Qatar .

Visa-Free Entry

Qatar visa on arrival new rules & updates, requirements for qatar visa on arrival, nationalities eligible for visa-free entry to qatar, special conditions for some nationalities, visa waiver for gcc citizens, documents checklist for visa on arrival passengers, qatar visa on arrival cost, procedure at the immigration counter, how to extend qatar visa on arrival, faq on qatar visa on arrival.

Visa-free entry is now the new term defining previously “visa on arrival”. According to Qatar Tourism, nothing changed except the name.

JANUARY 2024 STATUS

1. citizenship.

The visitor must be a citizen of an eligible country ( the list of countries is given below ).

2. Passport Validity

The visitor’s passport must be valid for at least six months .

3. Confirmed Return Tickets

The visitor must have a confirmed return or onward ticket.

4. Accommodation

The visitor should have a confirmed accommodation (clear address and contacts of the local host) or hotel reservation for the duration of the stay. This can be a regular hotel booking for travellers from most countries. For hotel booking, we recommend TripAdvisor as it has the largest database of hotel reviews.

However, for citizens of India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand and Ukraine, the hotel booking for the entire duration of the stay should be through the Discover Qatar website . Staying with a Qatar resident or booking directly with a hotel is not accepted for these nationalities (to avail visa on arrival).

A minimum of 2 nights should be booked through the Discover Qatar website. Cancellations within 48 hours of arrival are subject to a 100% cancellation fee.

Please note that even if you book the hotel for a longer duration, the initial visa issued will be for 30 days only. You need to extend that by visiting any MOI Service Center or the Airport Immigration office. The online extension may not be possible for these nationalities.

This requirement is only mandatory for travellers coming on a visa on arrival and not for family visit visas .

5. Health Insurance

As per the new law launched in February 2023, health insurance is mandatory for visitors who are staying for more than 30 days . Insurance is highly recommended even for visitors staying less than 30 days, but it is not mandatory.

Visitors can buy basic health insurance for QAR 50 (for 30 days) from any registered insurance company listed on the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) website .

6. Proof of Funds

From 10 March 2022, visitors from countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Iran (using a visa-on-arrival facility) are required to have a valid international credit card or debit card . Cash of QR 5,000 will no longer be accepted (Belarus nationals can show USD 1,000 in cash).

  • For debit cardholders , a three-month bank statement is also required. There should be a minimum balance equivalent to at least QR 5,000 in your local currency.
  • The card should be under the name of the visitor . If you are travelling together as a family, one card (under the family head’s name) is enough.
  • This rule applies only to nationalities that require proof of funds (like India, Pakistan, Thailand, Iran, etc.)

The countries under this facility are divided into two categories as below:

Category 1: Visa waiver for 180 days

  • Visa waiver valid is for 180 days from the date of entry.
  • Visitors can stay for a total of 90 days , either during a single trip or multiple trips.
  • The stay is not extendable beyond 90 days.
  • Requirements are a passport (with 6 months validity), return/onward flight tickets, confirmed accommodation (local host details or hotel booking), and health insurance (if staying for 30 days).

The following are the countries included under this category:

Visa On Arrival 90-180 Days Screenshot from Visit Qatar website

Category 2: Visa for 30 days

  • The initial visa is issued for 30 days from the date of entry.
  • For most countries, the stay can be extended for another 30 days .
  • This is a single-entry visa .
  • Requirements are a passport (with 6 months validity), return/onward flight tickets, confirmed accommodation, and health insurance (if staying for 30 days). Discover Qatar hotel booking and proof of funds will be required for some nationalities (explained below).

Travelling To Qatar

Hamad International Airport Lounge

  • During the check-in from your departure country, inform the airline staff that you are visiting on a visa on arrival. They may check your accommodation details. If you are staying with a relative, it is good to have their contact details, address, and QID copy.
  • At the immigration counter in Doha, mention that you want a visa on arrival.
  • Give the hotel’s / host’s contact details (name, contact number) if you are asked.
  • Show credit or debit card if required (for some nationalities only)
  • When asked, look at the camera for an iris scan (eye scan). A green light would blink to confirm this.
  • A fingerprint scan may be required for some passengers.
  • The immigration officer would fix a small sticker on your passport. That’s it. Welcome to Doha!

If you are a citizen of a country eligible to extend the 30-day visa-on-arrival, you can do the renewal online.

I am flying with Bangladeshi passport via DOH and have 17 hours stay in Qatar for my connecting flight. I am a resident of UK, am I eligible for a free transit for shopping in Doha?

My son is moving to Qatar to work and his employer is providing accommodation for his initial stay and I will be travelling with him to settle him in. Do I need anything to come with him as I will staying with him for up to 2 weeks. We are from the United Kingdom

Hi there I am holding a Kosovo passport with a Swiss Perminent Residenz status and will be in transit in Doha for 2,5 hours coming from Zuerich going to Male. Do I need a transit visa for this period of time in Transit or not at all? Thank you for your answer. Claudia

Hi Claudia, You don’t need Transit Visa is you are not leaving the airport.

can visit visa holder of Qatar exit by road ??? or should be return by air only ???

Hi Shahnawaz, They can exit by road also.

I have a 5 month old, he was born outside of Qatar. I want to return to my job with him but my husband is not a resident of Qatar. What do I do?

Hi Roseline, If your profession and salary is good enough (normally you would need QR 10,000 or Qr 6,000 with family accommodation), you can sponsor your baby. But you can apply for that only after reaching Qatar and will take few weeks. If your nationality is eligible, you can try visa on arrival for baby or Hayya A1 Tourist Visa.

I have a Canadian passport and I am planning to visit Qatar via land border from Saudi Arabia and then will drive back. Will I still be able eligible for visa on arrival? I am also not a resident in Saudi but I am here on a tourist visa and will have a flight from Saudi to Canada after visiting Qatar

Hi Sasa, Usually this is allowed. However, you may double-check with the Qatar Government Helpline at +974 44069999 to ensure the policy hasn’t changed.

Please update visa requirements. You are posting old information!

Hi Jana, We regularly confirm this information with the official websites (Ministry of Interior, Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism) and we believe they are all up-to-date. Please specify which part you think is wrong and we can check again.

Can I apply ‘on arrival visa’ 2 months before the visit.

Hi Paul, Visa On Arrival cannot be applied in advance. You can apply for Hayya Tourist Visa (A1) in advance. Here is how: https://www.dohaguides.com/how-to-apply-qatar-tourist-visa-online/

as per your guide- south africans get a 30 day visa on arrival however latelythey have been receiving a 90 day visa on arrival? could you clarify if this is a multi entry visa and will this 90 day visa on arrival be permannently applicable to south africans?

Hi Khadija, We are not sure if there is a recent change in policy. According to official Visit Qatar website , South African citizens are eligible for 30 days visa free entry (not 90 days). There is another group of countries with 90 days visa, but SA is not include in that. For clarification, please contact the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] .

I am an RP holder and I would like to book a hotel through Discover Qatar for my wife, daughter, and myself. However, the hotels listed on Discover Qatar only mention ‘room only for VOA (visa on arrival)’. Can I still book a hotel for three guests, including myself, even though I am an RP holder?

Hi Khan, Usually if a family is coming on visa on arrival, RP holder can add himself as a guest and stay with them. However there is a clause on DQ website that says “If anybody books these hotels who do not require them for these purposes, the hotels may charge an additional supplement at check-in.” So it is better to confirm with the hotel before booking.

The hotel looks somewhat dated and worn but it is run well and we had a really comfortable stay. The room was clean, fresh sheets and towels every day, as well as a new large water bottle.Reception is staffed 24 hours, so arriving or leaving at odd times is not a problem.Wifi in the lobby was mostly ok, in the room it only worked sporadically. At 40 euros a night it's a really good deal for Doha, especially since the location is good too. Souq Waqif and the Corniche are both at walking distance.

Recommended by a friend, was clean tidy decent very well located, despite being not one of those great names every taxi driver knows about this small hotel.Strongly recommend to every business traveler. Price is beyond my expectation, breakfast was OK nothing like huge open buffet the big guys have but enough for breaking fast. I have given 4 start just to be fair to the 5 star big guys with few hundred dollar bills. Hey forgot to say about all of the staff I met, Great Guys.

I like this hotel. The location is perfect, very near to many attractions in Doha. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the price is very reasonable. Iftar buffet is average but with nice arrangment. It is very quiet and less customers. The cost is competitive.

This hotel I came here for sleep 1 night because my flight is delay 10 hours and then Qatar airline give to me voucher to stay here ... first time when I came here I'm happy and feel good because staff here is so friendly and good person ... and driver he is good too ... he talk with me from Doha airport until hotel ... I hope if possible I will come back to travel here again ... thank you everybody for good service

This hotel has been arranged by Qatar Airways free of cost because we had long transit more than 8 hours. Short transit visa arrangement required about 90 minutes. The hotel is very near to the sea and souq Waqif. It was a big room for me and my wife, spacious bath room, tea corner and sitting area. Perfectly clean. Buffet lunch was enjoyable. Friendly staff. Recommended.

I stayed there for one night booked by QATAR Airways because my connection time was more than 8 hours.the Room was clean and tidy, the mattress was very hard like stone and the staff were very kind ....

I stayed there for almost two months. My impression is that it is a decent hotel for the money asked for the room. Room was clean and tidy. Breakfast did not have a variety and recurring almost daily. They were kind enough to change the breakfast time to an earlier one when I needed to. The Wifi was strong only at the reception area so you had go down in order to use Internet.

VIETNAM eVISA

Vietnam eVisa Sample

As of now, Vietnam eVisa is the only visa option available for tourists and visitors. All nationalities are eligible to apply for Vietnam eVisa.

Validity of Vietnam eVisa

The validity of Vietnam eVisa is maximum 90 days from the day of issue. You must enter and exit Vietnam within the validity of the E-Visa.

When to apply for eVisa

You can apply for your Vietnam eVisa as early as you like. The eVisa processing takes 3 working days, so you must apply at least 3 working days prior to your trip. In certain instances, it can take longer. I highly recommend applying at least two weeks prior to your trip.

How long can you stay in Vietnam on eVisa

With an E-Visa, you can stay up to 90 days or until the expiry of your eVisa, whichever is shorter. The immigration officer will write the date by which you must exit the country on the entry stamp in your passport. Usually, this exit date on your passport will match the expiration date of your eVisa.

eVisa application process

You can apply for the eVisa on the official Vietnam E-Visa Portal . You would need a scan of your passport data/ID page, a digital photo and a credit/debit card.

You can follow my step-by-step guide on applying for Vietnam eVisa . Follow along the steps outlined in the guide. It only takes 10 minutes to complete the application.

Documents required

You will need the following documents.

  • Original passport
  • A digital portrait photo
  • A scan of your passport data/ID page

Photo requirements

The digital photograph must meet the following specifications.

  • Photo must show the entire face
  • Photo must be straight-looking without glasses
  • Photo must be about 4 x 6 cm in dimensions
  • Photo must be in JPG format only

The visa fee is $25 USD for single-entry and $50 USD for multiple-entry e-Visa. You would need a credit or debit card to pay the visa fee.

Processing time

The eVisa processing time is 3 working days, not including the day of application. If it’s taking longer than 3 working days, contact the e-Visa support.

Application tracking

You can track your application status from the Vietnam E-Visa portal application status page using your registration code, email and date of birth.

Your application can have any of the 2 statuses.

  • In Processing: This status means that your application is still in process.
  • Granted Visa: This status means your application is approved and ready for download

ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURE AT THE AIRPORT

Vietnam entry exit stamps

Entering Vietnam by air

After you get off your flight, walk towards immigration/passport control. If you are a visa-exempt national, present your passport and boarding pass. If you hold an eVisa, present your passport, boarding pass and a print or soft copy of your Vietnam eVisa to the immigration officer.

The immigration officer may ask a few questions such as how long you plan to stay, what you would like to do in Vietnam, etc.

The immigration office may also ask to see your return ticket. If you are flying on a one-way ticket, make sure to carry proof of an onward flight ticket to avoid any trouble at immigration.

Leaving Vietnam by air

Vietnam employs manned passport control. You will go through passport control on your exit. Present your passport and boarding pass. The immigration will not ask any questions unless you have overstayed your visa.

Vietnam has streamlined its visa process in recent years. About 25 nationalities from Southeast Asia and Europe do not require a visa to enter Vietnam. Nationals of all countries and territories are eligible to apply for eVisa.

Vietnam Visa on Arrival (VOA) is still suspended. There is no news on when VOA will be available again.

I Got Qatar Visa on Arrival in 3 Minutes. Here is How You Can.

THE STEP BY STEP PROCESS TO GET THE QATAR VISA ON ARRIVAL AT AIRPORT

By Deb Pati last updated on September 18, 2022

I have applied for countless tourist visas so far, and am very much in the loop about a lot many others as the founder of this site. Turkey visitor visa, Thailand visa on arrival, Srilanka eVisa- really I have lost the count.

But never in my life have I gone through a visa application that went as smoothly as the Qatar Visa on Arrival.

From time to time, I come across questions on Doha Visa on Arrival as well. Note that Doha is the capital of Qatar.

In this article, I will go through the requirements for Qatar Arrival Visa, eligibility criteria, the application process, renewal, and everything else that’s relevant.

And, I will keep on updating the article as and when I come across new information.

Table of Contents

Who Can Get Qatar Visa on Arrival?

Qatar permits visa-free entry to citizens of many countries like Argentina, Turkey, Ukraine, and all the EU countries. So if you belong to one of them, you don’t have to worry about the Qatar visit visa.

All you need to do is show up, flash your passport, and boom, 90 days visa waiver then and there.

Then there are other nationalities like me who can get the Qatar Arrival Visa.

  • Falkland Islands
  • French Guiana
  • New Zealand
  • San Marino
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Vatican City

Qatar Visa on Arrival Requirements

The Qatar Arrival Visa requirements are quite straightforward.

1. Valid Passport

Passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

2. Onward Ticket

You need to possess an onward ticket which proves that you would be leaving Qatar before the expiry date of Qatar visa on arrival. This can be a confirmed return ticket to your home country or a ticket to a third country.

There are many ways to do this, however the cheapest and easiest one probably, is to simply rent a flight ticket .

In my case, I had an onward ticket to India within the time that my visa would expire. I actually had plans to return, so I had bought it with Qatar Airways. In case you are not sure of the date of return, you can rent a ticket.

3. Hotel Booking

You need to show the hotel booking for the visa on arrival. I have seen in some blogs and websites where they mention that the hotel booking must be for the whole duration of stay, which means 30 days.

However this is simply not true.

Discover Qatar Booking

You would need to make the hotel reservation through Discover Qatar only if you are traveling from one of the Red health Measure countries such as India, Pakistan, Iran etc.

In this case, you would need to quarantine for a day in a Discover Qatar hotel, even if you are fully vaccinated.

This also means that if you are a citizen of one of the three countries, but you were outside the country for more than 14 days, then you don’t need to do any quarantine through Discover Qatar.

You can stay wherever you want.

Coming to my case, I made a refundable reservation for one night in a hotel, since I was traveling as a tourist from Colombia after having been there for almost 3 months.

4. Vaccination for Covid, PCR

You need to be fully vaccinated for COVID which means at least two doses of any of the vaccines approved by Qatar’s ministry of public health. And your date of entry to Qatar should be at least 14 days after your last dose.

The passenger must have a negative RT-PCR test taken within 48 hours of departure.

The RT-PCR test is accepted everywhere, starting from Airline agents to immigration authorities and hotel receptionists. The very airline can deny you boarding even if their own website says that an antigen test is accepted.

Coming to me and my wife, we were both fully vaccinated 4 months before our departure to Qatar. And, of course, we got the RT-PCR test done a day before boarding our flights.

5. Ehteraz Registration

Every passenger entering Qatar, irrespective of their nationalities, must have received the Ehteraz Pre-travel registration . You can easily do it online by providing the required documents.

In fact, this registration itself can act as proof of your vaccination and quarantine, thereby saving you a lot of time at the immigration.

6. Travel Health Insurance

Health insurance is not part of the official requirements for Qatar Arrival Visa. However, as experienced travelers, we always recommend people have travel health insurance from a well-known provider.

For what it’s worth, we recommend SafetyWing Insurance . We have used it ourselves and it certainly is one of the best.

Saftey Wing Insurance for Thailand visa

7. Qatar Quarantine Requirements

Qatar quarantine rules are different for visitors from different countries.

Who does not need to quarantine in Qatar?

  • If you are from one of the standard health measure countries, and you are fully vaccinated.
  • If you are from a Red Health measure country such as India, Pakistan or Iran, are fully vaccinated but you have been outside your home country for more than 14 days.

Who needs to quarantine in Qatar?

  • If you are traveling from a Red Health measure country such as India, Pakistan, or Iran, and you are fully vaccinated.
  • If you are not vaccinated, they simply won’t allow you to enter.

If you have to quarantine, in that case, a rapid antigen test is required on day 1 of the quarantine.

How to Get Qatar Visa on Arrival at Immigration?

I and my wife traveled to Qatar from Colombia with a layover in Brazil. We bought the tickets from Qatar Airways. Although the PNR code was the same, the flight from Colombia to Qatar was with LATAM.

When leaving from Colombia, LATAM airline staff simply asked us to show the Ehteraz pre-approval and the RT-PCR test results. Nothing else.

And then when boarding the flight from Brazil to Qatar on Qatar Airways, they asked for the same pre-approval and negative RT-PCR test results before issuing us the boarding pass.

We landed in Doha around 11 pm.

We were expecting it to be more or less like Dubai, where we had done a layover recently. (Jump to the Dubai tourist visa article if you are planning a trip to Dubai.).

But unlike in Dubai, there were not a lot of passengers and the airport was almost empty. After landing, we walked in the direction of the baggage claim and made it to the immigration counters.

By the way, if you are transiting in Doha, you can go to the Discover Qatar counters. They are very close to the immigration counters.

Since I had a refundable hotel booking and the Discover Qatar hotel was cheaper than my hotel, I asked at the Discover Qatar desk if they had anything available. They did not.

After this, we walked to the immigration counter. I already had the printouts of my hotel booking, bank account statements, and credit card ready to show them to the official at the immigration.

However, the only thing I really had to do was to look at the camera for an Iris scan(eye scan). This can take a bit of time if you have never done this before. You need to look straight and wait for the green light to blink.

I believe they already have access to the hotel booking and bank statements through Ehteraz pre-approval, since I had uploaded all those there. After this, the immigration official simply took the passport and stamped it.

My wife, on the other hand, was asked to show the hotel reservation proof only.

30-day Qatar visa on arrival

Once done, we made it out of the airport. Before leaving, we were asked to show the proof of Ehteraz pre-approval and RT-PCR test results, so as to confirm that we were not needed to quarantine.

Once outside, we caught an Uber to our hotel using the free internet at the airport.

How to Get Qatar On Arrival Visa Extension?

The Qatar Visit Visa Extension is fairly easy to get if you arrive with an on-arrival visa. The whole process is online and takes a few minutes.

While we did not do it, we talked to different expats who have done it, and here is the breakdown.

Step 1: Don’t be Late

You can extend Qatar Visit Visa any time after entering Qatar. However, you must do it before the expiry date mentioned on the stamp on your passport, which would be for 30 days.

Step 2: Visit the Portal for Ministry of Interior

Visit the portal for the MOI Qatar. There are different services provided by the Qatar government for residents and visitors.

Navigate to Inquiries > Visa Services.

Step 3: Extend Qatar Visa

Provided either the visa number which you can check from the immigration stamp from the passport or the passport number and then your nationality.

After this fill in the captcha and click on the extend button.

How to extend Qatar Visa on Arrival Online

When you click on the extend button. The visa should be extended for 30 more days.

Step 4: Confirm the Qatar Visa Validity

On the same MOI website, naviagate to MOI Services> Inquiries >Visa Services > Visa Inquiry and Printing.

Or if you want to jump to the Qatar visa validity check directly.

You can provide your passport number or the visa number, your nationality and the captcha. Then click on the submit button.

Click on the print icon to save or print the copy for future reference.

No renewal receipt is needed as Qatar visa on arrival extension is free. You can keep the print just for the peace of your mind.

Process for Qatar Visa On Arrival for Indians

Indians can avail Qatar on arrival visa just like the citizens of the any other countries who are eligible for getting it. You need to have all the required documents, starting from the hotel booking to return flight ticket.

Quarantine Rules in Qatar for Indian Citizens

As per the current rules, you need to quarantine if you are travelling from India to Qatar. In case you are travelling from a third country after being there for at least 14 days, you would not need to quarantine.

In my case, since I had been outside of India for a few months, I simply filled out the Ehteraz registration. And, as of 4th September 2022, Qatar has decided to get rid of quarantine requirements.

Hi Nadeem, You would get the visa for 1 month. If you are a Singapore citizen, then simply apply using the Singapore passport. If you are an Indian citizen and a Singapore resident, then mention the same and upload the entry stamp from Singapore and exit stamp from India. In both the cases, you should not be needed to do Discover Qatar booking.

Hi, I am an indian citizen currently residing in iran. My relatives live in qatar, so how can i apply for such a visa that does not require me to book hotels? Is it possible? And isn’t this absurd like many people have friends and family in qatar and they would want to stay there.

January 1, 2023 at 10:30 pm

Hi Buruj, It is very much possible to get a visa without booking hotels. Just in case, you can ask them to write an invitation letter or book a refundable reservation in case they ask for it in immigration.

Greetings, I am from Pakistan, but residing in Saudi Arabia Since Oct 2022. Now I am aiming to enter Qatar for Visa extension purposes my questions are.

1: Do I need to make hotel reservations through Discover Qatar or can I simply make a hotel booking through Booking.com or any other site?

2: Do I need to get travel insurance?

3: Do I need to register Ehteraz?

4: How much money should I carry along with me in order to obtain Visa on Arrival?

March 10, 2023 at 1:16 pm

Hi Muhammad, 1. Yes you can book any hotel. 2. Yes, always. 3. No 4. You don’t need to carry a lot of cash. Something like 500 USD and credit cards would be fine.

I will be travelling to Doha with my wife and baby to see family there but my Dad’s Qatar Work Permit is soon to expire. Which means I will not be able to apply for Family RP. Do you think we need hotel bookings or is there an alternative to booking hotel through Discover Qatar as we will be staying with my parents. We are all Indian citizens residing in UK and flying from UK.

March 24, 2023 at 9:37 am

Hi Satya, It would be much easier just to get some refundable hotel reservations in a few hotels. You can cancel them once you get there. Discover Qatar is not needed anymore.

Hi my name is john an Indian passport holder and a Canadian permanent resident. I’m travelling from india to Canada. And I have a self transfer (recheck in ) at Doha- Hamad international airport. My onward flight to canada is within 5 hrs.

Here I have few concerns: 1. Do I need a transit visa for my self transfer as india is one of the 95 nationalities participating in the visa waiver (visa on arrival) program.? 2. Or else if I opt to take the visa on arrival, do I need to show a hotel reservation as I only have few hours to spare in Doha(mostly gonna stay in the airport itself).?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks and regards

June 25, 2023 at 9:45 pm

Hi John, The answer to both your questions is No. You will be fine transiting in Doha.

I am travelling to Qatar from India for four days as a tourist. I have already booked my tickets and hotel. I did not book the hotel from the Discover Qatar website. I was not aware. Just now I found out that booking a hotel from Discover Qatar is mandatory to be eligible for Visa on Arrival. 1. Can I apply for a visa before travelling then through my travel agent? 2. What other options do I have at this point?

I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you.

September 6, 2023 at 2:16 pm

So ok, Discover Qatar booking is needed if you do the VOA. However, you might try through Hayya to get an e-Visa and that way no need to book through Discover Qatar. https://visitqatar.com/intl-en/practical-info/visas

Hi I am traveling to Doha from India. Is it compulsory to book hotels through Discover Qatar for visa on arrival. As I am not sure how long my visit would be! However it will be less than 15 days. So if I book hotel by Discover Qatar for like 4 days and need to stay for another week. How could I extend my visa then? Is it an easy process? If I book hotel for another week through another website, would be problem for me? Are they still quarantining?

December 22, 2023 at 2:11 pm

Hi Damini, You should get the visa for 30 days. You can book the Discover Qatar hotel for a few days and then extend. In case they ask, you can explain the same. You won’t really need to extend.

They are not quarantining as of now.

December 21, 2023 at 7:53 pm

Qatar has a discriminatory policy towards Indian citizens wherein one has to book hotel accommodation for the entire length of desired stay through discover Qatar……..if anyone says that any hotel through any site just for a few days and then stay anywhere is misleading you. They will charge you QAR 200 per day while leaving for days not spent in hotel booked via discover Qatar…..a qatar airways site.

They need to fill their empty hotel rooms and Indian citizens are their means to do so. This is specific for Indians and Pakistanis only……others can come and go showing only their passport…..don’t even check for their return ticket. GOI……wake up.

December 22, 2023 at 2:19 pm

Hi Harish, Thanks for your comment. I agree that the policy is discriminatory.

However, do you know anybody who was fined( or heard of)? When leaving, are they asking about hotel reservation in Discover Qatar? This is something that is usually asked only when you enter/get the visa.

I am an Indian citizen (and Indian passport holder) with USA (H-1B) visa traveling from India to USA via Doha with a 2 day layover in Doha (want to just visit Doha).

If I want to use the free visa on arrival program, I have to book a hotel via discover qatar it looks like?

But if I pay 100 QAR and get the Hayya e-visa (ETA A3), I can book my own hotel?

Do the above assumptions sound correct?

I can book one of the many nice hotels using points/miles on my own, so I really don’t want to use discover qatar.

Ideally, I would like to use the free visa on arrival program and just book my own hotel. But it seems like that may not work and I might get bullied at the Qatar immigration?

Visa on arrival.

  • For detailed information regarding entry visas, please see these pages: link 1 , link 2

  • If you’re a resident of a GCC country (Gulf Cooperation Council) then you’re eligible for a single-entry visa on arrival. The visa will only be issued if your residence permit is valid for at least six months. Please approach an immigration counter, present your passport and pay your visa fee. Your visa will be valid for a one-month stay in Qatar and it can be renewed for a further two months.

Paying your visa fee

  • The easiest way to pay your visa fee is with your credit card or debit card, directly at an immigration counter. The visa fee depends on your nationality and type of visa.
  • If you’d like to pay your visa fee with cash, then you need to visit the designated bank counter (map) before you approach a passport control counter. The bank will charge a fee (QAR 25/USD 7) for processing your cash payment. All major currencies are accepted.

Getting a visa before you travel

If you’re not eligible for a visa on arrival (please see eligibility criteria above), then you need to arrange a visa before you travel to Qatar. This can be done at Qatari embassies around the world, or by enquiring with a hotel you have a booking within Qatar. The visa fee depends on your nationality and type of visa (click here for more details on visa fees). Please ensure you plan enough time for the visa to be processed.

If you’re flying with Qatar Airways, then you may be able to arrange a visa on arrival by booking a hotel stay for the duration of your visit. Tourist visa is for those who are not eligible for  visa on arrival  or a  visa-free entry  to the UAE. Tourist visa can be obtained for eligible individual tourists from around the world. Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for this type of visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

According to a Cabinet resolution passed in July 2018, children under the age of 18 years who are accompanying adults, can get a  free visa for their visit from 15 July to 15 September each year.

Tourist visas through airlines

Each airline has some conditions, which must be met in order for your visa to be arranged by them. One of the conditions is flying with them. For more updated and specific information, check the following UAE-based airlines for visa types, facilities, terms and conditions:

  • Visa services from Etihad Airways  - Etihad Airways
  • Visa Services offered by Emirates Airline  - Emirates Airline
  • Visa services from Fly Dubai  - Fly Dubai
  • Visa services from Air Arabia  - Air Arabia

Tourist visas through agencies and hotels

Licensed travel agents and hotels in the UAE can arrange a tourist visa for you provided you purchase the ticket through them and maintain hotel reservation with the specific hotel.

You can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages available to the UAE in collaboration with a local tour operator.

It is important to check the authenticity of travel agents you are dealing with and refrain from paying or sending copies of your official documents until after you are 100 per cent sure the tour operator is genuine. You can seek the help of the  UAE embassy in your country  for verification.

Note: The UAE embassies do not issue tourist visas. In order to get a tourist visa to the UAE, you need to get in touch with one of the UAE-based airlines, a tour agency or a hotel (where you intend to stay) in the UAE who will apply for visa on your behalf to the official  visa-issuing authorities  in the UAE.

With 'bleisure' and fewer workers, the American hotel is in recovery

Vinay Patel, head of Fairbrook Hotels, owns 11 hotels around Virginia.

Midday is quiet at a Hampton Inn & Suites near Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia. Staff restock the snacks. A young dad bounces a baby among the grays, browns and teals of the lobby. Eventually, a couple of new arrivals roll a suitcase to the front desk, asking to check in early.

The hotel's owner, Vinay Patel, has noticed this interaction waning.

"People are now literally not wanting to go to the front desk," he says. "They'll check in online on the phone similar to the airlines and go straight to [the] room."

Technology has long been transforming hotels, and the pandemic accelerated that change.

Wages, employment, inflation are up, causing headaches for the Fed

Wages, employment, inflation are up, causing headaches for the Fed

It's Tuesday, and for this hotel, that used to mean a crush of business travelers. Instead, Patel has been welcoming a new type of guest: here not just for business or leisure, but a combination of both. "Bleisure" is a hot new term in hospitality, the product of remote-work culture.

All this is part of a big post-pandemic reset for the American hotel: It's shaken up travel habits, erased jobs and put the industry on a circuitous path to recovery.

Getting by with fewer workers

Today almost 200,000 fewer people work in hotels and other lodging than before the pandemic, federal data shows. That's a 9% drop. Lower employment often implies an industry in trouble — but hotels may actually never need as many workers as they once did.

When travel cratered in 2020, hotels were wiped out and over a million workers lost jobs. Housekeepers, front desk agents, maintenance staff went into construction, food, retail. Those who stayed trained to do new tasks. Hotels that offered extra services, like lunches, scaled them back.

Over time, guests learned to skip daily room cleanings for COVID precautions. Breakfasts got more self-served and automated, with waffles and pancakes tumbling out of machines. And in the long run, operating with fewer workers saves companies money.

"You know, like it or not ... the pandemic has kind of taught us a lot," says Patel, who owns 11 hotels around Virginia. "We've become a lot more efficient."

Less business, more "bleisure"

Vacationers surged back to hotels with " revenge travel ," but foreign tourists and corporate travelers are still not back in force.

"That's the biggest impact," says Miraj Patel, the chair of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, whose members own the majority of U.S. hotels, and Vinay Patel's nephew. "The full recovery is still not there."

Opening A Hotel During A Pandemic

The Indicator from Planet Money

The "bleisure" travelers make up for some of the losses, says Vinay Patel. They come for meetings, and stay longer to visit the Virginia wineries. And at the Hampton, six miles from the airport, that's upended the ebb and flow.

Before the pandemic, "you do not mess with Tuesday-Wednesday," Patel recalls. "Business travelers come down on Tuesday-Wednesday."

And these days? "It's spread out a lot more," he says.

Questions about the industry's future

Major hotel chains, like Hilton and Marriott, have seen their stock price resurge to record highs this year. That's partly because luxury hotels have fared much better than the rest.

People stayed more often at upscale brands and less in economy lodging in early 2024 versus 2023, says Jan Freitag, who tracks hospitality analytics at the real estate data firm CoStar.

Overall hotel occupancy neared 64% in March compared to 68% in 2019, CoStar found. That suggests near-recovery from pandemic collapse, though the lag does obscure millions of rooms that got built, opened and not filled.

"We have more rooms available now, and we are selling fewer rooms than we did," says Freitag.

Price-wise, the average cost has jumped to $155 per room from $129 in 2019, Freitag says. That's a 20% increase. At the same time, overall U.S. inflation added up to almost 23% over those years. So hotel owners list plenty of higher costs, too: taxes, wages, insurance, coffee, cups, linens, detergent.

Add in high interest rates, plus banks being stingier with loans, and a new concern hovers overs the industry's future: Fewer people have been buying and building new hotels.

That includes Vinay Patel in Virginia, who keeps delaying construction on a lot where he originally planned to break ground when the pandemic began.

"I just can't make the numbers work right now," he says. "I have to wait another year to two years."

Still, he notes a silver lining: There's less competition for his existing hotels — for now.

EUROPE TO OPEN MORE THAN 325 NEW HOTELS BY 2024

According to the European Hotel Construction Project Trend Report by Lodging Econometrics (LE), leading global hotel franchises are progressing with major European construction projects despite the economic slowdown. The report indicates significant growth, particularly in high-end hotels, with 326 new hotels and almost 45,100 rooms expected to open across Europe this year.

The pipeline of hotel construction projects in Europe has slightly increased compared to the previous year. According to a trend report prepared this spring, Europe's total hotel construction pipeline stood at 1,705 projects and 253,777 rooms at the end of the first quarter.

45% of hotel projects are currently in construction, accounting for 762 projects and 117,815 rooms. Additionally, 411 projects with 60,356 rooms are set to begin construction in the next 12 months, while 532 projects with 75,606 rooms are in the early planning stage, slightly below the record reported in the first quarter of 2023.

The luxury hotel projects have shown the highest growth in the first quarter of the year compared to the previous year. Upper luxury establishments now have a record 271 projects and 45,122 rooms, while luxury chains currently have 358 projects and 57,153 rooms in the pipeline.

There are 305 medium-high-end hotel projects, with 46,020 rooms expected to be opened in this segment. These three scales represent 55% of the projects in the European region's total construction portfolio.

In the first quarter of 2024, 45 new hotels with 5,961 rooms were opened across Europe. An additional 281 new hotels with 39,129 rooms are expected to be opened in the following quarters.

Overall, experts forecast the opening of 326 new hotels with 45,090 rooms by the end of 2024. Next year, hotel openings in Europe will increase to 367 new hotels with 52,605 rooms by 2025.

Five Countries Account for Half of the Hotel Openings in Europe

The United Kingdom has the highest number of projects in the European pipeline for the first quarter of 2024, with 321 projects and 45,257 rooms. Germany follows with 180 projects and 28,816 rooms, France with 130 projects and 14,268 rooms, Portugal with 120 projects and 15,020 rooms, and Turkey with 116 projects and a record 18,277 rooms.

These five countries represented 51% of the projects and 48% of the rooms in the region's total pipeline during the year's first quarter.

The European cities with the largest pipeline currently are London, with 80 projects and 14,987 rooms; Istanbul, with 51 projects and 8,814 rooms; Lisbon, with 37 projects and 4,349 rooms; Dublin, with 27 projects and 5,254 rooms; and Dusseldorf, with 26 projects and 4,798 rooms.
