The best 15+ travel games for your phone that work offline

January 3, 2023 by Karen Turner 4 Comments

As someone with limited data, I’m always astounded how few apps work well offline and without data. I’m often toying with a new phone app that I can play while on the road.  After far too many apps that I’ve burned through during a long bus ride, I’ve asked my fellow bloggers for their favorite travel game apps for iPhone and Android that work perfectly offline, so even if you’re on a long plane ride, you can still enjoy playing on your phone!  I’ve tried to focus this list on thought-provoking games for your phone that challenge your mind, rather than games that just keep you busy (as they’re addictive).

  • Monument Valley

Don’t Starve

Plague inc..

  • Leo’s Fortune
  • Alto’s Adventure

Reigns: Her Majesty

Old man’s journey, the escapists.

  • Life is Strange

Lumosity: Train of Thought

Hit the light.

It’s good to note that not all of these apps are free and I strongly recommend buying a power bank if you’ll be playing a lot of travel games during your trip on your phone.  Games can really kill your battery, especially when the screen is bright.

The best game apps for travel for iPhone and Android

Monument valley (and its sequels).

Monument valley is a beautiful game for your phone, perfect for a relaxing train ride! This offline app is known for its beautiful design.

From the moment I discovered this game in House of Cards, I was addicted to this elegant game. Its beautiful Escher-like concept together with its clever puzzles make it a joy to play.  I’ve bought the sequels as well. It has the feel of a puzzle game without the strain of doing a puzzle.     (My husband is begging me for a turn!)

Device6 is a clever and unique game only for iPhones. For game lovers who are looking for different and mind-bending, try out this game. It integrates literature with fantasy and puzzles. We don’t want to ruin the surprise!

If you are looking for something to keep you occupied during an 8-hour flight, look no further than “Don’t Starve”. In its essence, Don’t Starve is a wilderness survival game. Your character is dropped in an unfamiliar wasteland and your task is, quite simply, not to die.

Unlike most other games today, Don’t Starve doesn’t come with a tutorial which means it’s 100% up to you to figure out how to play this game. It is challenging and engaging. You need to be strategic and creative.

You’ll need to figure out how to feed yourself, how to defend yourself against enemies, and how to find shelter. If you die, you will have to start over from scratch and the world you find may be entirely different from the previous.

Challenge yourself and see how long you can survive. With my best efforts, I haven’t made it past 8 days yet! It may be a paid game, but it is worth every cent and works perfectly without an internet connection! Just be warned, it’s almost impossible to put down 😉  – Jacky

Screenshot from 80 days, a fun text-based choose your own adventure game that can be played for hours offline or on an airplane!

I love this choose-your-own adventure game where you try to help your character get around the world.  Along the way, your character will get into all sorts of trouble (of course).

Maybe it’s my love of travel, but I have an intense love for the Victorian steampunk world full of delight, splendor, and laughs.  It’s fun to play this with a friend sitting next to you–and you’ll not want to put this game down.

Ever dream of destroying the human race?  Want to destroy the human race without being labeled a mass murderer?  Try Plague Inc.  Plague Inc. is a strategy game where you become a small microbe and get to infect people around the world.  The goal is to spread quickly and kill of the humans before they notice and decide to start creating a cure.

This game is a major time killer.  The standard game has four different microbes you can become at 4 difficulty levels. Each microbe has different characteristics.  The different levels can make the game easy or hard.  Each game is different and that’s not just due to the microbe or difficulty level.

You have to evolve your microbe.  How you chose to affect the humans can vary.  Do you go for the quick kill or a long drawn-out illness?  Should you start your illness in a populated country or one of the more remote islands of the world?   I love that each game takes less than 30 minutes and I am always experimenting new ways to destroy the world.  – Jennifer

travel android game

This free app with a reasonable subscription to the New York Times Crossword is so worth it if you’re into crosswords. The Saturday and Sunday crosswords are my favorite although they’re generally the hardest. It’s especially fun to do it with a loved one as you can debate on who has the correct answer to the clue!

Before a plane ride, just remember to hit download on all the crosswords that you want to be downloaded for the flight–and you should be entertained for hours.  (This is even easier to use on a tablet.)

Heads Up was the perfect game to play as a group or pair when time was moving slower than a sloth getting out of bed on a Sunday. The premise is simple: one person holds their phone to their forehead while the rest of the group try to describe or act out the word on the screen. When they guess correctly, the player tilts the phone to get a new word described. While there doesn’t always need to be a “winner”, of course the person with the most correct guesses does the best!

There’s plenty to enjoy about the game; it doesn’t require much prior knowledge, involves everyone in a group, you can play as little or as long as you like, and often any language differences can add an element of hilarity to the game.

As a game that doesn’t invite too much serious competitiveness or over-challenging tasks, it’s a great way to have a laugh with new and old friends. I have extremely fond memories of this game from my travels, I associate it with meeting new people from all sorts of cultures, making great memories, and learning a thing or two about my acting and describing skills! – Suzy

Leo’s Fortune

Guide a green fluffball with a mustache through progressively more difficult levels of cliffs, forests, gears, levers, deserts, and more. Leo tells you his sad story as you try and help him recover his gold. His expressive eyes and fluffiness are so well-animated, it makes flinging him up on a branch that much more rewarding.

The developers spent some money on the voiceover for this game, and it shows, I genuinely missed Leo when I finished it! You will want headphones for this one to get the full experience. Lovers of platformers will particularly enjoy this game. – Erin

Alto’s Adventure

I’ve played this one off and on for years, as it’s a classic side-scrolling jumping game and perfect for killing time in short bursts. Alto is a snowboarder, and you’re attempting to get as far as you can while avoiding rocks, reindeer, posts and other obstacles.

There’s the added fun of trying to incorporate flips and tricks, and board sliding bunting. You eventually unlock other skiers with different skills too. It’s beautifully animated, with a minimalistic aesthetic, as you’re seeing pretty much everything in silhouette. I find it fun for short periods, but I don’t have a particularly obsessive gaming personality. Some people play this for hours! -Erin

Screenshot of Blackbar, one of the best travel games for iPhone. #travel

This short, but fun game is great for puzzle lovers who are looking for something different.  The game is about censorship in its various forms–and it requires that you use your sleuthing skills to figure out the story behind the actions.

Buy on Google Play Store / iTunes Store

I got sucked into this point-and-click puzzle game so quickly.  Despite the childish drawings that made me initially doubt if this was for adults, this story-based game with two different characters has an engaging plot line and interesting puzzles.

I found the story very beautiful and funny.  I didn’t want to stop playing this one, so consider buying this prior to a long international flight if you’re into puzzle games.

Screenshot from Reigns: Her Majesty, one of the most fun phone games to play offline without wifi!

A Tinder-like decision-making game, Reigns: Her Majesty puts in the place of the Queen in the center of an imaginary royal court, with many decisions to make.

Some are hilarious, like how to put up with your annoying husband, and others are about how to rule your kingdom. You have to walk the line between antagonizing your subjects too much and inspiring too much love –– either extreme will get you killed!

The writing here is witty, funny, and barbed, poking fun at the ways women are caught between impossible choices. It won a BAFTA award for best game, and I’m not surprised. This one can be played in short bursts or you can sink into an hour-long binge, it’s that good. – Erin

Beautiful screenshot of Old Man's Journey, one of the best travel games for your phone that work offline! #travel #gaming

Old Man’s Journey is a thoughtful puzzle game where an old man looks back on his life and his memories. It’s subtle, beautifully drawn, and with dynamics that I haven’t seen in many games before this.  I found the whole experience very calming, even when I was frustrated with not getting to the next level.

Break your pixellated character out of prison! This game has won several awards, and for good reason. Incorporating an old-school gaming aesthetic with a bit of crafting and the occasional round of whacking people over the head with makeshift weapons, this game is more complicated than it first appears.

There are several ways to break out of any given prison level –– from causing full-scale riots to digging tunnels to making disguises. It’s compelling enough to entertain you during a long boring train ride, but quick enough to make a short wait entertaining. -Erin

Life Is Strange

Life is Strange is a choose-your-own adventure game that is closer to a movie that you get to direct yourself.  It’s emotionally gripping, cinematic, and with a poignant story.  It’s fairly long, so you’ll get a lot of use out of it for a low cost (think how much you’d pay for a movie).  My husband and I spent  days playing this game together.

Framed is an amazing concept of an app where you create and rearrange comic panels in an attempt to help your spy succeed.  The gameplay is a bit fast, but it’s a blast to play and you’ll lose track of time while playing Framed.

The animation of Framed is hand drawn and the music just adds another piece.  I’d consider it the perfect travel game for a long wait at the airport–although you shouldn’t get too invested in it. 😉

Lumosity is an app featuring a variety of games that reportedly train your brain to become more agile in different ways. The free version of the app serves up three games from a collection each day for your brain workout. You can play each game as often as you want during the day. I love most of the games I have played so far, but my favorite by far is Train of Thought.

Train of Thought i s Lumosity’s most popular brain game. It has reportedly been played over half-a-billion times since it was launched in 2013. I am not surprised at all…Train of Thought is both addictive and aggravating like the best games always are!

So, how does it work? The game features a screen with a bunch of train stations in different colors, with tracks connecting each station to a starting point. When you are ready, trains are released onto the track from the start point one by one, and the goal is to throw switches correctly and in time for each train to head into its home station.

It sounds simple…but it gets progressively more difficult with each level. On a recent ten-hour flight to Europe, I spent every waking minute playing it (and I barely slept!), but I still could not crack my current level of 11.  – Dhara

Who doesn’t enjoy a word game?! I love Wordescapes because it keeps my mind working especially when I’m on a long flight or connection and the internet is not available. Or simply when I’m working and need a break.

The app works this way, you have box tables like the ones in Scrabble, and you will get a set of letters where you need to create words that fit on the number of boxes. If you create a word that is not needed in the table box, it will go as a bonus word.

Every level have 16 set of games, once you finish every level you get free coins. Coins can be used as a “hint” when you are stuck. This app is completely free and the words will be in English. – Mary

Hit the Lights is a fun Breakout style phone app that can be played offline or while you're on a plane!

This game is the millennial take on Breakout (Bueller?). This fun game with a sleek design is fun to better played offline as the ads are far less of a nuisance. That said, if you love to cheat, you can watch the ads for additional ways to break the lights. I’ve found it delightfully addictive and fun to play late at night due to the dark colors.

I need to add the honorable mention of Board Game Arena , which works only online. This free platform with premium options features 100+ favorite board games digitized. You need to be online and at the time of editing, the app is still in Beta mode (and is best on a tablet/laptop). Still, I absolutely loved playing King of Tokyo and Ticket to Ride against strangers on my last train ride.

Minesweeper

Minesweeper is a timeless puzzle game where players navigate a grid filled with hidden mines, using numerical clues to safely reveal empty spaces and flag the mines. The game requires logical thinking and a sharp eye, as one wrong click could trigger a mine and end the game. At Play Minesweeper , you can enjoy this classic game through a user-friendly interface, with varying levels of difficulty to suit different skill levels. Its quick and engaging gameplay makes Minesweeper an excellent choice for traveling, providing entertainment during long journeys or waits without needing a continuous internet connection.

I recently found a new game that is totally addictive! It’s called MixedUp Max and is a magic squares type of game – you can select different pictures and different shuffle levels and then slide rows and columns to re-arrange back to the original picture! There’s a free version but I’m not a fan of ads so went for the paid for version, and best of all, it can be played without internet access so I’ve been using it on my plane and train trips!

9 Hidden City: Hidden Object Adventure

Hidden City: Hidden Object

We couldn't do a best adventure mobile games list and not mention at least one well-made hidden object game, so here it is. In the game you'll have a lot of ways to prove how perceptive you are by solving puzzles, and a lot of elements to appease the adventure-loving side within.

In Hidden City, you play as a detective that is trying to figure out if an unknown city, now rumoured to be appearing for some, is real or not. One of your friends seems to be lost or kidnapped in this city, so you’ll need to save them. Hidden City, like all of these hidden object games, has a cheesy predictable story, lots of puzzles and many items - it’s very good.

Hipmunk

While Hipmunk does essentially the same things as many other travel apps that let you find and book flights and hotels, it has an interesting sorting metric for finding the best flight for the lowest cost.

It's called Agony and it's a combination of price, number of stops, and layover time. Flights that score low on Agony will be at the top of the list while flights that score higher will be sorted lower. So if you want the shortest flight with as few layovers as possible, for the cheapest price, you can quickly find it with Hipmunk.

If you're looking for the cheapest and least onerous flight for your next trip, try Hipmunk.

The 20 best free Android games

Gaming Phones test playing Call of Duty Mobile lobby screen

We all know that free Android games aren’t always free these days, but many of them are very close if you have a little patience. Most free-to-play bottlenecks occur when players get impatient. Waiting it out can usually get around those pitfalls. What we have here are the best free Android games that you should be able to play comfortably without spending a dime, and we hope you enjoy them.

For anyone who can’t handle free-to-play mechanics, check out our list of the best Android games , which includes paid titles. If you have a Netflix subscription, check out our list of the best Netflix games , which include some excellent titles without ads or additional fees.

The best free Android games

Alto’s odyssey, asphalt 9: legends, brawl stars, honkai: star rail, disney mirrorverse, ea sports games, final fantasy brave exvius, genshin impact, call of duty: mobile, league of legends: wild rift, legends of runeterra, marvel snap, nintendo games, pocket city, rocket league sideswipe, tower of fantasy, vampire survivors.

Price: Free to play

Alto’s Odyssey is a natural choice for a free Android game. It features simple mechanics, gorgeous graphics, and a relaxing style. Players ski down a hill while avoiding obstacles and making massive jumps. There are also items to collect that can be traded in for various customization options. The game relies heavily on its wallpaper-worthy graphics. They are simple but effective and the dark, gradient colors add a good atmosphere to the game. As you progress further the scenery changes, but you can also select where to start if you want a more relaxing experience.

It’s completely free to download and play with some limited ads. There are in-app purchases, but they are all for customization stuff so it’s entirely optional and it doesn’t affect gameplay. It’s kid-friendly and fun. Noodlecake Studios also does Alto’s Adventure, the predecessor to this one.

The Asphalt franchise has some of mobile’s most popular racing games. Asphalt 8: Airborne and Asphalt Xtreme were the big ones in the series. However, Asphalt 9: Legends came out in July 2018. This is the most recent game, with Asphalt 10 expected in summer 2024. It includes 50 cars, a bunch of challenges, and a bunch of content to play with. That includes online multiplayer, single-player stuff, and more.

It uses an auto-go mechanism so you can’t control your acceleration. To be honest, it’s not the best implementation, but you get used to it. The graphics are good and there are social elements as well. It’s a freemium game. Thus, the online competitive aspect may be skewed a bit. However, the single-player stuff is good arcade racing. You can also skip in-app purchases with extra grinding. It’s tedious but entirely doable.

Brawl Stars is the latest in a string of hit games from Supercell, who also made the likes of Clash of Clans and Clash Royale. It’s very different from those games though, offering intense 3v3 battles with a colorful cast of characters to unlock as you play. It uses simple touch controls, and there are always new maps and game modes to keep things interesting.

Like Supercell’s other games, this is one of the best free Android games you can download, but it is fairly heavily monetized with a battle pass and other in-app purchases. You can get by without spending any money, but you’ll have to grind to unlock new characters. If you love short, competitive matches, this one is worth checking out.

Honkai: Star Rail is a gacha RPG from the developers behind Genshin Impact. You and the other characters use the Astral Express to travel from planet to planet to help the people there deal with issues. It has excellent presentation, a good soundtrack, and the combat system is fun, albeit a bit too simple for some folks. This is one of those games where you can play it for months, and there will probably be new content for years. The game just has that thing about it where you know it’s going to be good.

It launched in 2023 to rave reviews, and it’s one of the best gacha games on the market right now. It has the same monetization methods you’d expect from any other gacha RPG, but the game is very generous with free pulls if you actively participate in events.

Disney Mirrorverse is a surprisingly good mobile gacha. It uses action RPG mechanics where you run around the battlefield and hit your enemies with attacks. You collect an increasingly large cast of Disney characters, form a party, and progress the story. There are also side quests, online PvP, and event quests to help keep you occupied. It has flaws like any game, but it’s in active development and is continuously improving.

EA has the market cornered on sports games. It is the only developer with yearly launches for most sports, including their Madden NFL Overdrive game, FIFA Soccer, NBA Live Mobile, EA Sports UFC, and others. These games all have very similar elements. You can play the actual sport and there is a sim mechanic. The graphics are usually pretty decent and the controls are generally good. However, EA sports games have heavy free-to-play elements. That is a frequent frustration for many players and it makes it difficult to recommend EA in general.

Unfortunately, EA is the only developer that consistently makes games for most sports, making them the best by default. There are a few decent soccer games here and excellent football games here .

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is perhaps the best Final Fantasy-themed freemium game out there. It features many elements from the original games, including actual town and dungeon explorations, hidden treasures, secret dungeons, and lore. The gameplay is simple to learn, but you’ll need to think critically in order to beat bosses and hard opponents. You’re frequently rewarded for logging in daily and additional missions, quests, and activities help keep the game fresh.

This is about as good as it gets for free-to-play titles. Square Enix launched a spiritual successor, War of the Visions: FFBE in early 2020 and it’s an improving strategy RPG game. It’s not nearly as good as regular Brave Exvius, though. You can find some other great gachas here .

Genshin Impact was a surprise release that’s grown into one of the biggest mobile games of all time. It’s a mix of an action-exploration RPG with gacha elements. Thankfully, you can play through all of the game’s content without spending a dime , including the massive story that spans across a rich, colorful world. It comes with a completely open world (although some areas are gated by quest/story progress) and some satisfying combat mechanics. The graphics and gameplay are both surprisingly good. Plus, you can play with people on PS4, iOS, and PC as well.

Despite its free-to-play mechanics and gacha label, this is a seriously good game that’s only gotten better over time. At this point there’s an absolutely enormous world to explore, and you don’t have to pay a penny to access all of it.

It should come as no surprise that Call of Duty: Mobile makes our list of the best free Android games. It includes classic online FPS PvP like any Call of Duty. However, it also includes a 100-player battle royale mode similar to PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. That puts it in a rare category of a good regular FPS game like Critical Ops as well as a good battle royale like PUBG Mobile.

The game has in-app purchases, but they seem to be solely for cosmetic gear and a good amount of it is available as in-game rewards. The gameplay is good and it’s really stood the test of time.

MOBA-style games on Android used to be huge, but their popularity has waned in recent years. One welcome exception is League of Legends: Wild Rift, which is essentially the mobile version of the hit PC MOBA title. It pits teams of five players against each other to destroy the enemy team’s base. Thankfully, game times are significantly shorter in Wild Rift, making it much more mobile-friendly.

As expected from Riot Games, there’s a high level of polish here, and the roster of champions is constantly expanding. Everything will feel familiar if you’ve played the PC game, but certain skills have been tweaked to suit touchscreen controls. To be honest, some of the changes are for the better.

Legends of Runeterra is a card dueling game similar to Hearthstone (another excellent free-to-play game). Players collect cards, build decks, and duel each other until someone wins. You pick a champion and build the deck around it, which helps define your strategy. It’s honestly a lot like the Commander game type in Magic: The Gathering.

Apart from this game and the one above, Riot Games also makes Teamfight Tactics , another good free-to-play game.

Another great free mobile card game is Marvel Snap. As the name implies, it’s based in the Marvel universe, and you can collect and compete with your favorite characters. These include the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers, and countless other pop culture icons.

The game itself is a fast-paced card battler, and it’s grown enormously in popularity since it launched in late 2022. Matches take roughly three minutes, with unique mechanics for anyone familiar with this style of game. The game is also available on PC via Steam, although it’s pretty much just a mobile port.

Price: Free to play (usually)

Nintendo is an easy recommendation for free Android games. They have games in a variety of different genres and most of them tug at the nostalgia factor. Some Nintendo titles include Dragalia Lost, Fire Emblem: Heroes, Mario Kart Tour, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. There is also a middling Dr. Mario World game if you like puzzles. Each game is cleanly done with smooth gameplay and colorful graphics. A few, like Dr. Mario World, are a bit rough around the edges with their free-to-play elements, but otherwise, Nintendo does a great job of delivering good experiences.

We recommend Fire Emblem Heroes to strategy RPG fans especially. Fun fact, Mario Kart Tour has the second largest mobile launch of all time behind only Call of Duty: Mobile.

Price: Free / $2.99

Pocket City is as close to SimCity as you can get on Android. The game starts out like many other city builders. You build roads, residential zones, commercial zones, and important buildings. There are disasters to deal with and surprisingly deep economic and crime mechanics to keep track of. The free version of the game doesn’t have quite as many features as the premium version and it has ads as well.

However, most of the extra features are just that, extras, and you can play the core game for free without paying for it. The core game is fairly limited, so don’t expect to get hundreds of hours out of it. Still, this is easily one of the best simulators on Android right now, even if it had a rough patch when it started.

Pokemon Go was the biggest mobile game of 2016, starting a worldwide AR craze that lasted for years. Even though its popularity has tapered off a bit, the game is still a very solid free option. Players can explore the real world around them all while catching Pokemon, taking down gyms, and finding Pokestops. New additions include legendary Pokemon, raid battles, trainer battles (with some caveats), and more. You can even trade Pokemon in the game now.

The game continues to evolve beyond what many remember it to be. When it eventually ends its run, it’ll go down as one of the greatest and most iconic mobile games ever. It stands alone atop the best augmented reality games list.

Roblox is one of the most popular games in the world right now. It’s a sandbox game with a metric ton of content to play through. The game is ancient by mobile gaming standards, but the ever-increasing amount of things to do keeps it relevant to this day. Players can play games that other players create or create new games themselves.

The mobile app has complete cross-platform support with the other versions of the game and includes a chat function. The downloadable content is occasionally NSFW, so make sure to monitor your kids if you let them play.

Rocket League was a huge cultural phenomenon on PC, and the mobile version is one of the best Android games you can play today. In case you’re not familiar with the original game, it’s a competitive soccer-like game where you control cars and pull off some sick acrobatic maneuvers to try to hit a giant ball into your opponent’s net. Monetization is surprisingly light, and matches can be very intense.

Price: Free / $1.99

Smash Hit is one of the best endless runners ever made. It uses a unique first-person perspective and you have to throw metal balls at glass panels to avoid taking damage. Your hit points double as your ammo count so there is a micromanaging aspect to the game to throw as few balls as possible while also being hit as little as possible. The free version of the game contains the full game from start to finish. The premium version adds saving and player stats.

Tower of Fantasy is a mobile RPG with gacha elements. Players hang out in an open world with tons of quests and story missions to do. Additionally, you collect various new characters, explore their backstories, and use them to defeat opponents. That’s the main gameplay loop, but there are other things to do as well.

The game competes with Genshin Impact in this space, and the two games are somewhat similar. The open-world aspect, the gacha aspect, and the exploration are all quite similar, so if you like one game, you’ll likely enjoy the other one as well. This one had some hiccups when it first launched, but it seems like the worst is well behind it. It’s a good game that’s worth playing if you like gacha RPGs.

Vampire Survivors was a huge sleeper hit in 2022, and now it’s available completely for free on Android. It’s a very simple retro-style rogue-lite bullet hell game where you move a small character around a map with waves of enemies constantly spawning. Your character automatically attacks, and you get stronger by picking up items dropped by defeated enemies.

There are tons of characters to unlock, and the simplicity of the game lends itself very well to mobile. However, some levels can take up to 30 minutes to complete, and closing the game might make you lose your progress. Keep that in mind before you start a new run.

Tencent’s PUBG Mobile is the most popular game in the Google Play store, having been downloaded more than one billion times.

Microsoft updated Minecraft on Android to give it the same features as the PC and Xbox versions of the game. You can even crossplay with your friends on other platforms.

The best Android games you can play offline

Even in our increasingly connected world, you may find yourself without Wi-Fi or data access throughout your day-to-day life. What better way to pass the time than to play a mobile game? Many of the most popular mobile games require an internet connection. Trying to open your favorite game while on a plane only to realize it won’t work can be a drag. To help you avoid that unfortunate dilemma, we compiled a list of the best offline games for Android that don’t require Wi-Fi or data access to enjoy.

You may also want to check out our picks of the best Android games , some of which do require internet access.

The Room: Old Sins ($5)

The fourth entry in the series, The Room: Old Sins , is a room escape game packed with expertly crafted puzzles that takes place inside a creepy dollhouse. So far, so spooky, right? When an engineer and his wife go missing, the hunt for a mysterious artifact is on. Follow the trail to their home’s eerie attic, where you’ll find a strange old dollhouse. Throughout the game, you’ll uncover Waldgrave Manor’s mysteries by following clues, exploring locations, and examining objects for concealed mechanisms. Once you pick this game up, it’s almost impossible to put down — and if you haven’t yet played them, there are three other games in the series, all playable offline.

Dead Cells ($9)

One of the more difficult games on our list, Dead Cells is also just about the most fun you can have offline. This roguevania action platformer sees you play as a failed alchemic experiment — a unique idea if ever there was one — fated to wander the halls of a supremely creepy castle. Explore, take down enemies, and find out what happened on the island. The threat of permadeath is real, and the progression is nonlinear, so every time you die, new levels unlock, adding an additional level of challenge. Dead Cells also has two modes to choose from (regular and auto-hit) and supports external controllers , if you prefer playing with a gamepad.

Terraria ($5)

Whether you’re already a fan of this classic action-adventure sandbox game on PC or console or totally new to the world of Terraria , it’s great fun. Explore a ginormous map (the world is randomly generated every time you start a game, so it’s never the same twice), mine blocks, and craft items to level up your character — and get ready to take on over 400 enemies and 15 challenging bosses that will test your skills. There are more than 20 biomes and mini-biomes to explore, with advanced building options that are easy to learn, so you can create amazing structures. When starting out, we recommend the Terraria Wiki guide , which will help you build your character in the early days. You can play alone offline — so you don’t need internet connectivity unless you’re planning on playing with friends in online multiplayer mode.

Eternium (free)

One for all the old-school role-playing game ( RPG) fans out there, Eternium is free to play, and you can access most features offline. Choose to play as a mage, bounty hunter, or warrior, battling your way across three gorgeous handcrafted worlds packed with castles, dungeons, caves, forests, and villages to explore, or level up and learn new abilities across a range of endless randomly-generated levels in the Trials of Valor game mode. Along the way, battle skeletons, demons, dragons, and more, or team up with your companions to take down harder enemies and be rewarded with rare, epic, and legendary gear.

Sonic Dash (free)

Sonic Dash transforms the classic platform game into an immersive and endless running experience. Play as Sonic or his fellow comrades — including Knuckles and Tails — and dash your way through a variety of maps. The game introduces unique mechanics like Sonic’s homing attack and periodic hazard events that make each run different. You’ll even be able to face off against two the biggest villains in the Sonic franchise: Dr. Eggman and Zazz from Sonic Lost World .

Tiki Taka Soccer (free)

Whether you’re a fan of soccer — or football, depending on your location — or not, Tiki Taka Soccer offers most if not all the aspects of the sport with a retro-style twist. Create your own team, hire staff, and even buy free-agent players and compete your way through the most premier leagues in Europe. Simplistic and easy-to-learn controls make the game playable for people of all ages. This is the perfect game for soccer fans across the world.

Earn to Die 2 (free)

In a zombie-filled apocalyptic world, the only way to escape is to drive your way through. Carrying the momentum of a successful first version, Earn to Die 2 introduces the same side-scrolling game-play but with a new story mode that’s five times longer than the original. As simple as it sounds to drive through piles of zombies, strategy is required to beat the game. You must factor in the amount of gas you have, the durability of your car, and even when to accelerate and break to optimize your mileage. The rescue ship isn’t waiting forever, so hop on and ride your way to peace and safety.

Dumb Ways to Die 2: The Games (free)

Dumb Ways to Die took games by storm, and Dumb Ways to Die 2: The Games is just as good. The setup is simple — play a range of dumb but fast-paced minigames to score points and compete in the Dumb Ways to Die Games. There’s a large range of games to compete in, and most are very easy to understand. However, it’s so fast-paced you should expect to die a few times before it clicks. But that’s part of the game, and something you should embrace rather than avoid. Ads are served for retries, or you can pay to bypass that — with the fast pace, you may end up watching a lot of ads. It’s a lot of fun regardless.

Rayman Adventures (free)

Everyone’s favorite French platformer is back, and he’s on mobile. Rayman Adventures is everything you expect from a Rayman game — unique visuals, kooky designs, and tight platforming action — sewn up into an Android game. You can play as more than 55 characters across seven different worlds as you grow your Sacred Tree to unlock new adventures. Hunt down the Ancient Eggs, hatch over 320 different Incrediballs, and use them to … er, beatbox? Apparently so. It’s a wild ride, and one that’s hard to say no to.

Rebel Inc. (free)

Do you have what it takes to pacify a rebellious region following a devastating and destabilizing war? Rebel Inc. gives you the tools to prove you can. To keep your assigned region under control, you’ll have to balance spending resources on military and civilian priorities, from instituting reading programs to build literacy levels, to constructing new guard outposts and hiring foreign soldiers to help keep the peace. But whatever you do, do it fast, as rebel insurgents will be waiting to seize control of the country.

The Wolf Among Us (free)

They’re fairy tale characters — but not as you know them. The Wolf Among Us tells the story of Bigby Wolf, otherwise known as “the big bad wolf”, as he polices the magical community hiding in plain sight. Based on the award-winning Fables comic series by Bill Willingham, The Wolf Among Us challenges you to solve a brutal, bloody murder in a world where your choices matter. Set before the events of the Fables series, this is the perfect place to start with this series. The first part is available for free, with episodes two to five available for purchase within the game.

Monument Valley 2 ($5)

Monument Valley 2 , the sequel to the 2014 sensation, introduces a heartfelt bond between mother and child. Protagonist Ro guides her child through the gorgeous, dream-like puzzle levels. The environments themselves are even more pleasant than the already delightful original. Seeing landscapes change with your inputs is perhaps an even cleverer illusion than the actual puzzles. Relaxing, moving, and utterly mesmerizing, Monument Valley 2 is one of the best puzzle-adventures on Android.

Hitman G0 ($6)

Agent 47’s move from stealth to tactical strategy made a whole ton of sense thematically. But we doubt anyone expected Hitman Go  to be one of the better turn-based games around on mobile. Each grid-based level plays out like a game of chess. Characters are even rendered as model figures. Dispatching enemies while working through rooms is just as satisfying as it typically is in real time. Mechanically sound and wonderfully designed, Hitman Go is the turn-based puzzle game you never knew you needed. No prior knowledge of the Hitman franchise is required to fully enjoy it, either.

Alto’s Odyssey (free)

Keeping in step with its predecessor, Alto’s Odyssey  is an automatic runner that replaces running shoes for a nifty snowboard. Unlike the original which stuck with conventional snowy alps, Alto’s Odyssey takes place throughout several desert-themed chapters. Chapters contain randomly generated areas to keep the experience fresh. The star here is the simplistic gameplay, which continuously has a level of freedom and joy to it rarely seen in the popular mobile genre.

To the Moon ($5)

Johnny Wyles is dying and wants to go to the moon, though he doesn’t know why. He enlists the help of two doctors who help to recreate memories of his life en route to granting his dying wish. From there, To the Moon quickly turns into a moving love story. More narrative experience than a game, To the Moon is well-written and accompanied by wonderful 16-bit visuals. If you want a great yarn, To the Moon holds one of the best game narratives on Android.

Plague Inc. (free)

A mainstay on the Google Play charts since its 2012 launch, Plague Inc. is one of the most satisfying and diabolical real-time strategy games around. At the start of each simulation, you create a virus that will hopefully wipe out the entire population (yes, it’s twisted). Thoroughly engaging and somewhat educational, Plague Inc. makes creating pandemics an experience that you’ll never get sick of (sorry).

Downwell ($3)

Welltaro decides to explore a well. That’s the premise of Downwell and an obvious one at that. What follows is a frenetic roguelike game centered around perpetual downward motion. Guiding Welltaro, you must avoid obstacles and enemies with the help of gunboots that only recharge when touching the ground. Downwell ‘s levels are randomly generated, which makes each run different than the last. Designed to be played in portrait mode with minimalist monochromatic visuals, Downwell is an excellent, if very challenging, time waster.

Stardew Valley ($5)

Perhaps the ultimate town management game on Android and one of the defining games of this generation, Stardew Valley sets up well for mobile. It’s the perfect experience to play for short chunks of time every day. But you can also log long stretches in Pelican Town quite easily. Taking care of your crops and making small talk with the folks of Pelican Town is surprisingly rewarding. Stardew Valley ‘s charming writing, endearing visuals, and addictive gameplay make it one of the best games on Android.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas ($7)

For a large-scale console-style experience on mobile, look no further than Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas . The port of the PlayStation 2 classic runs well on mobile and the open-world third-person shooter gameplay still holds up today. San Andreas is one of the best Grand Theft Auto games. It also happens to be one of the best games on Android.

Wayward Souls ($7)

A dungeon crawler, Wayward Souls excels in delivering a satisfying and strategic action fit for mobile devices. Designed specifically with touchscreen controls in mind, Wayward Souls is one of the better roguelikes available on Android. Death is permanent, so each run is a new experience. And even successful runs don’t take very long. Surprisingly deep combat and six unique characters to choose from help make Wayward Souls stand out among a sea of average dungeon crawlers on Android.

10000000 ($3)

Melding dungeon crawling with match-three puzzlers, 10000000 (Ten million) is one of the most inventive games on this list. The goal is to accumulate 10,000,000 points to escape the dungeon. Along the way, you tinker with rows and columns to match three icons in a row. Successful matches grant attacks, let you pile up loot, and even level your character. Puzzles change as you progress further through the dungeon. While it takes a few runs to get the hang of it all, 10000000 is a great choice for anyone wanting to shake things up and play something genuinely novel.

Florence ($3)

A wordless love story, Florence is a stellar visual novel from the designer of Monument Valley that can be completed in one sitting. It magically recreates the feeling of falling in and out of love with the help of gorgeous animations and simplistic puzzles. The puzzles themselves, though simple, cleverly help inform the player of the emotions of Florence and her boyfriend. Florence has one of the best love stories in gaming, and it accomplishes this feat without using words. That alone makes it worth a playthrough.

A masterclass in minimalism, Playdead’s Limbo is an utterly unforgettable puzzle-platformer. You play as a young boy, working through ominous environments rendered entirely in shades of black and white as he desperately looks for his missing sister. The puzzles range from clever brain teasers to inventive physics puzzles. The star here is the chilling atmosphere, which is an unrelenting and omnipresent force. The game’s graphics are not only creepy but often gruesomely detailed — especially when it comes to the boy’s potential deaths.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions ($6)

If you excel in tactical role-playing games, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions might become one of your favorite games. After all, this enhanced PSP   remake is arguably one of the best turn-based strategy games ever created.

Participants will appreciate the medieval and extensive world map in this game. You’re bound to get into a few fights throughout your travels, but the game’s battle system will enable you to face any challenge that awaits your character. This video game is immersive; it’s full of quality, lovable character, and exciting storylines. You may find yourself giving over dozens of hours of your free time to play.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ($10)

We know there appear to be enough Star Wars games out there to fill a galaxy. If you’re bogged down with choices or tired of the same old feeling of a game, we feel confident you’ll be drawn to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic .

While the original version of this game was first released in 2003, it has withstood the test of time against competitors by offering a detailed storyline and rich role-playing challenges. Nearly two decades ago, the game became an instant classic. Today it’s experiencing a resurgence thanks to its Android remastering.

Try your hand at bringing down the Empire and use your skills to save the Republic. To get ahead, you have to become well-versed in the ways of the Force. KOTOR is a fantastic game for all RPG and Star Wars fans; This updated classic will keep you engaged and remind you of your love for Star Wars.

Smartphones tend to have pretty good camera systems these days, whether you're talking about the very latest Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or the iPhone 14. But even the perfect photo can sometimes need a little additional pizazz. A little extra sparkle can come in the form of a simple color filter, artificially added background blur, or can extend as far as diving into an image's levels and other advanced features. Heck, now that we're in the AI era, it can also include using a tool to transpose yourself into a medieval setting or swapping a face with a friend.

We're a long way from when Motorola ruled the mobile world, and these days, the company finds itself being eclipsed by smartphones from Samsung, Apple, and Google. But that doesn't mean you can discount the industry veteran entirely. Far from being beaten, Motorola has continued to put out great phone after great phone, and fans who long for devices with the iconic "M" logo can still find phones worth their time and money.

Motorola has been particularly active in the foldable and budget ranges, but it's also created some great flagships recently — specifically ones you may not have heard too much about. Let's end that ignorance now; here are the best Motorola smartphones you can buy in 2024, with options for every budget.

WNBA to begin charter travel for all teams this season

This change in the way wnba players will travel to games will end league’s long-standing policy of mandated regular-season commercial flights..

The WNBA will begin charter travel for all 12 of its teams this season “as soon as we logistically can get planes in places,” Commissioner Cathy Engelbert told sports editors at a league meeting Tuesday afternoon, confirming a report on X by USA TODAY sports columnist Christine Brennan.

This very significant change in the way the world’s best women’s basketball players will travel to games will end the league’s long-standing policy of mandated regular-season commercial flights for its players.

“We intend to fund a full-time charter for this season,” Engelbert said. "We're going to as soon as we can get it up and running. Maybe it’s a couple weeks, maybe it’s a month … We are really excited for the prospects here.”

The WNBA’s decision comes as the league is seeing unprecedented growth, ticket sales and interest as the most recognizable rookie class in WNBA history, led by Caitlin Clark — arguably the best-known athlete in the nation — begins regular-season play May 14.

It also comes as Clark and the rest of the WNBA rookies had to take their first commercial flights as professional athletes for preseason games last weekend and be exposed to members of the public walking near them, approaching them and taking photos and videos of them, including in unsecured airport areas. All teams are traveling with security personnel this season.

"It was all right," Angel Reese said of flying commercial to Minneapolis for last Friday's game against the Minnesota Lynx.

"We have a great security team. Chicago has done a great job being able to put in place some great guys and they've been amazing for us," Reese said before the Sky's preseason game against the New York Liberty on Tuesday night.

In June 2023, Phoenix star Brittney Griner , who spent nearly 10 months in Russian custody in 2022, was harassed in the Dallas airport by a right-wing YouTube personality who yelled at her and tussled with Phoenix Mercury security in an airport concourse. The WNBA allowed Griner to fly private charters the rest of the season.

This season, the league was already planning to allow teams to charter when playing back-to-back games as well as during the playoffs but otherwise fly commercially. The league hasn’t allowed charter flights over the years because it said that would create a competitive advantage for teams that wanted to pay for them over those that did not.

Flying commercial has been a part of the WNBA’s current collective bargaining agreement with its players, which was signed in 2020. Ironically, many WNBA newcomers flew on charters throughout their college careers.

WNBA player reaction

During a call with reporters on Tuesday, New York Liberty stars Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart weighed in on what charter travel would mean to players.

"As we continue to add more games into the season and change the way the Commissioner's Cup is being played this year, it just adds a little bit more travel into our schedules and stuff," Jones said. "If we can try to find some kinds of help with our recovery and, you know, just being able to get rest so that we can put our best product out there on the court."

Stewart agreed with Jones.

"It's exactly that, obviously. Understanding (it’s) player health and wellness but also player safety, and making sure that we can get from point A to point B and have the focus be our jobs and our team," Stewart said.

Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon, who had been an outspoken proponent of adding charter flights after spending eight years as an assistant with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, said the immediate reaction from everyone is "great!"

"This is something that the league has been pushing for for a long time for its players," Hammon said. "I look at it as we can put a better product out there."

Android Device Streaming, powered by Firebase

Android Device Streaming , powered by Firebase, lets you securely connect to remote physical Android devices hosted in Google's secure data centers. It’s a fast and easy way to test your app against physical units of some of the latest Android devices, including the Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, Pixel Fold, select Samsung devices, and more.

After connecting to a device, you can deploy your app, view the display, interact with the device (including rotating or unfolding the device), and anything else you might do with a device using a direct ADB over SSL connection—all without leaving Android Studio. When you're done using the device, Google wipes all your data and factory resets the device before making it available to another developer.

Android Device Streaming is currently available as a no-cost trial after you sign in to Android Studio with your Google account and select a Firebase project to use. If you don’t already have a Firebase project, it’s easy to create one.

  • App Links Assistant: Web associations file support

App Links Assistant now supports web association file validation. Ensure a seamless user experience by validating that your JSON file is correctly formatted for upload to your domain.

App Links Assistant: Web associations file support

  • Baseline Profile installation

Baseline Profiles improve code execution speed by about 30% from the first launch by avoiding interpretation and just-in-time (JIT) compilation steps for included code paths. While Android Studio has included Baseline Profiles in builds for years now, these were only actually compiled by the OS in production (often by Play Store).

Android Studio Jellyfish now compiles these Baseline Profiles when any non-debuggable app build is installed on a device. This applies to release builds, as well as when you're profiling with low-overhead .

This means — as long as you aren't using a debug variant of your app — the performance you see when installing from Studio / CLI now much more closely matches production by taking advantage of profiles from a Baseline Profile generator module and libraries like Compose.

Quality improvements

Beyond new features, we also continue to improve the overall quality and stability of Android Studio. In fact, over 900 bugs were addressed during the Jellyfish/AGP-8.4 cycle, and memory errors are down by 40%.

IntelliJ platform update

Android Studio Jellyfish (2023.3.1) includes the IntelliJ 2023.3 platform release, which has many new features such as comprehensive support for the latest Java 21 programing language features, an intuitive floating toolbar with editing actions, and a Run to Cursor inlay option in the debugger to speed up your workflow. To recap, Android Studio Jellyfish 🪼includes the following enhancements and features:

  • Android Device Streaming

  • 900+ bugs addressed
  • Memory errors down by 40%

Here's How I Find Great Free Games on Steam

Want some free games worthy of your time? Here's how to find them on Steam.

Quick Links

  • Finding the Best Free Steam Games With Steam Search
  • Checking Trending Games on Steam
  • Using Third-Party Websites to Find Free Games

Key Takeaways

  • Use Steam search filters to find all free games and refine by genre, tags, and more.
  • Check trending free games to find newer releases with good user activity and reviews.
  • Utilize third-party websites like Reddit and SteamDB for free promotions and giveaways.

There are plenty of good free games on Steam, but it can be hard to find them. Even if you look up lists of free games on Steam online, there's a chance they won't be up-to-date and miss some of the newer releases. Fortunately, you can take matters into your own hands with these handy ways I use to find great free games.

1 Finding the Best Free Steam Games With Steam Search

There are plenty of reasons to use Steam , but one thing I really like about it is how easy it is to find well-rated free games. To do this, go to the Steam store front page (it doesn't matter if it's in the client or on the website). Then, click the magnifying glass icon to the right of the search box to bring up the search tools.

Look at the filters on the right side of the results. At the very top, you should see Narrow by price . Drag the slider all the way to the left so that the filter reads Free .

Now you have every free product on Steam at your fingertips. This will include products you likely won't have any use for, such as free DLC for games you don't own. To fix that, go down to the Show selected types filter and check Games .

If you want, you can also take the time to go through the filters and refine what games you see. For example, you can select relevant tags, how many players the game supports, or whether or not it has been verified for the Steam Deck. If you're taking the latter route, remember that you can share your mouse and keyboard with your Steam Deck if you think it'll help with a particular genre.

Finally, we want to see what the best games are. To do this, click on the drop-down box next to Sort by and click User reviews . Now, Steam will sort all of the games based on the ratio of positive to negative ratio the games have—the more positive reviews, the better.

2 Checking Trending Games on Steam

The above search trick is great for finding the best free games—but after a while, the search gets a little stale. The same few games stay at the top of the rankings, and if you play them all, you're pretty much stuck until another blockbuster game comes out.

Fortunately, there is a way to find good, free games that have just been released. Head back to the Steam storefront, then hover over the New and Noteworthy category at the top and select New Releases .

Scroll down until you see the list of games, then click on Popular New Releases .

Like above, set the slider to Free and check the Games filter. By going through the popular new releases, Steam will now serve up games that are both seeing a lot of user activity and are rated well. You can see this in the review column: all of the games will have at least a "mostly positive" rating.

If you applied the same filters to the regular new releases list, you'd see free games that are either unrated or rated poorly, so this method is best to find games that are worth playing.

3 Using Third-Party Websites to Find Free Games

Things get a little trickier if you want to find games with free special offers or giveaways. If you want to go this route, you'll need to take advantage of some third-party websites.

Reddit has a few subreddits dedicated to finding free games, including titles that are having a free promotion period. The FreeGameFinder and FreeGamesOnSteam subreddits are good places to check out; the latter is particularly good at weeding out games that are only free for a weekend, or during a beta test.

You can also check out SteamDB's free promotions filter for more titles. This will include DLC titles, but if a game is having a 100% off sale, it'll pop up here for you to check out.

And finally, if you're looking for an older game, there's always a chance that you can get it for free elsewhere. Check out these sites where you can download old games for free for more information.

Finding free Steam games is easy, but finding titles worthy of your time is a little trickier. Now you know how to locate the well-rated Steam games, plus some places to find titles that are having free-to-keep promotions.

5 weird but awesome android game controllers.

It's time to say goodbye to your boring old gamepads

There isn't enough discussion these days about how good mobile gaming is when you pair your phone or tablet with an Android controller . I find myself playing Call of Duty on my phone more now than I do on PlayStation because what you lose in screen size, you make up for in speed and convenience. From the moment I turn my controller on, I can be in a live CoD Team Deathmatch in under 30 seconds, and the graphics and performance are close enough to what you get on a console.

Now that I've convinced you to try mobile gaming with a wireless gamepad, let me open your eyes to something else: you don't have to use those boring old black-and-white legacy controllers. There is a whole world of cute, colorful, and even weird controllers out there. There are some small enough to fit on your keychain, some big enough to house a full arcade joystick and controls, and some shaped like little furry animals. They may look different, but they house all the tech you need to dominate your favorite games. Below, we've rounded up the top 5 weirdest but awesome Android game controllers.

Best Android games in 2024: Top picks across every category

1 8bitdo zero 2 mini bluetooth gamepad, what is this, a controller for ants, 8bitdo zero 2 mini bluetooth gamepad.

I honestly could have made this entire list out of 8Bitdo products. For those not familiar with the brand, it's extremely popular in the mobile gaming space for making retro-inspired, reliable accessories. The company makes controllers in all kinds of shapes, styles, and sizes...as evidenced by the Zero 2 Mini. You can see in the photos, the Mini is seriously...mini. It measures just 2.75 inches long, and less than an inch wide, meaning it's small enough to carry in your pocket without noticing. It's an impressive feat, really, shrinking a usable gamepad down to that size, and it's obviously a huge plus in terms of portability.

But don't let the size fool you. The Zero 2 Mini is the real deal. The battery can last for up to 8 hours on a single charge, and it can connect with almost anything including the Nintendo Switch, Raspberry Pi, and, of course, Android. The button layout is similar to that of the old SNES controllers, with a D-pad located on the left, four action buttons in a diamond formation on the right, and two bumper controllers up on the shoulders. Start and Select buttons sit center stage.

The Mini comes in three bright colorways: Yellow, Pink, and Turquoise, and at the time of publishing, is priced at just $20. So it gets an A+ for portability, an A+ for design, and an A just for being Adorable. If you only buy one controller from this list, make it this one.

2 Turtle Beach Atom Game Controller

A serious controller for serious gamers, turtle beach atom.

So, you know how the Zero 2 Mini is small, cute, and unassuming? The Turtle Beach Atom is the exact opposite of that. It's a big ol' block of raw power and destruction [Tim Allen grunting.gif]. It's so big that they had to split it up into two pieces. Imagine someone challenges you to a game of Subway Surfer, and you pull this thing out of your bag and start assembling it.

The two-piece design is actually ingenious. There are literally no connecting pieces between them, meaning there is no cap on the size of phone the Beach Atom can support. The pieces actually communicate with each other via a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless link, but don't worry; this doesn't add lag or otherwise affect performance. The end result is a Steam Deck-looking device that offers console-level controls with two thumbsticks, a D-pad, bumpers, triggers, and more. There are even built-in Xbox Guide, View, and Menu buttons for those who choose to use the controller for Xbox Game Pass. Each controller module has its own battery cell, and combined, they offer up to a staggering 20 hours of gaming on a single charge. When it's time to top up, you can do so via USB-C cable in just over two hours.

With console-like controls, a massive battery, and the ability to shrink down dramatically in size for travel or storage, the Turtle Beach Atom is the ultimate portable controller for serious gamers.

3 Stoga Switch Controller

Where fun meets functionality, stoga switch controller.

What if you want a more conventional controller design with dual joysticks, vibrating feedback, and a profile shaped like a raccoon's head? Stoga has you covered. The company bills this gamepad as a Nintendo Switch controller but notes that it's also compatible with Windows and Android devices, as well. And despite its child-like appearance and budget price tag, it houses some pretty serious technology.

For starters, there is a 6-axis gyro sensor built-in that allows the controller to detect things like inclination for motion-sensing games. I don't know how much, if any, use you'll get from this on Android, but should you ever use this controller on a different platform, it's there. The same goes for its dual vibration motors that can provide 4 different levels of haptic feedback.

The controls themselves may also surprise you. You have the aforementioned dual joysticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, and the usual bumpers and triggers (tucked behind the raccoon ears). You also have a Turbo button, which has 3 levels you can cycle through a Function key, a Screenshot key, and get this: the raccoon's nose is the Home/Power button. Behind it all is a 500mAh rechargeable battery that offers up to 9 hours of playtime.

With tons of features and a cute design, the Stoga controller really blurs the lines between fun and functionality.

4 PB Tails Choc Bluetooth Gamepad

The controller you wouldn't mind keeping on your desk, pb tails choc.

PB Tails is another company whose products I could fill an entire list with. They make these aesthetically attractive game controllers with a distinct, wedge-shaped design. They call it 'retro,' but I actually think it's more of a futuristic look, and it comes in a wide range of colorways. And there is actually a reason behind the sharp shape, each controller is lightweight, and almost all of its angles are 135 degrees in order to fit more comfortably into your hands.

Like the Stoga above, this controller is packed with tech. It has 6 axis sensors for motion gaming, a turbo function, and 4 vibration levels to choose from. You can see there are also two joysticks located perfectly where your thumbs sit, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, and then your bumper/trigger buttons sit up top. It's a familiar layout, and it should feel natural for any platform you decide to play on—it's compatible with Android, Switch, Windows, and Raspberry Pi. Rounding out the features is an impressive 16 hours of battery life and a lifetime guarantee (though it's worth noting they don't specifically say replacement warranty).

Honestly, the PB Tails Choc is the best-looking controller on this list. Get one and keep it on your desk. Even when you're not using it, it will double as a tchotchke or conversation piece.

5 Arvin Arcade Fight Stick Game Controller

Play your favorite arcade games anytime, anywhere, arvin arcade fight stick game controller.

The Arvin Fight Stick shouldn't need an explanation for why it made this list. There is no way I was not going to include a portable arcade on my list of awesome controllers. I mean, look at this thing. It has a huge joystick, a ton of programmable buttons, and a built-in cradle for your smartphone, meaning you can take this with you to play anywhere there's a flat surface. Imagine loading up your favorite emulator and playing all the old arcade classics like Pacman or Street Fighter.

The Fight Stick is compatible with a wide range of platforms, including Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. The phone holder can support handsets between 41mm and 100mm tall. Buttons include Start, Select, Turbo, L2, R2, M1, M2, Settings, Home, and then your ABXY function keys. The 'Rocking' joystick is easy to move and has been tested to withstand over 100K uses, and the 600mAh battery can last for up to 15 hours. Additionally, there are 4 silicone non-slip pads on the bottom of the controller to prevent unwanted moving or shifting while gaming.

Look, get the Arvin Fight Stick for just $26, and you can play your favorite arcade games with real arcade controls anytime, anywhere.
