george jones tour 2023

April 26th, 2023 will be the 10th Anniversary of the death of George Jones, and on the day before—Tuesday April 25th—artists and fans will be congregating in Huntsville, Alabama at the Propst Arena to remember George Jones in a one night only event billed as “Still Playin’ Possum: Music and Memories of George Jones.” Scheduled to perform are Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Jamey Johnson, Justin Moore, Lorrie Morgan, Mark Chesnutt, Michael Ray, Sam Moore, Tanya Tucker, Trace Adkins, Tracy Byrd and Tracy Lawrence, with more names to be announced. The event will also be taped by a professional production crew for a future broadcast. “George Jones died on April 26, 2013, in Nashville, Tennessee. It will be ten years since he left us with just his songs, so to produce this night of music to honor his legacy is perfectly fitting,” says George’s widow Nancy Jones. “George made history and influenced artists from all genres and many of them will celebrate with us in April. The night will bring lots of emotion for the fans, our family, and anyone who just loved Country Music.” This will be the first major George Jones event since the closing down of the George Jones museum, venue, and restaurant in Nashville in December of 2021, and the selling of his naming/likeness rights in 2016. It shows that despite the financial adversities that have plagued the effort to keep George’s memory alive, they continue to do their best. The announcement also comes as Showtime is airing the limited series George & Tammy about the life and marriage of George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Tickets will start at $25.00, with a special VIP upgrade of $200.00 that will include dinner the night before with Nancy Jones. Tickets officially go on sale Thursday, December 22nd at 10:00 am Central. The presale has already started at Ticketbastard , use promo code POSSUM.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they also did a big tribute concert to honor Merle Haggard on the 10th anniversary of his death a few years from now in April of 2026. If they’re doing one to honor Jones on the 10th anniversary of his death in April of 2013 this year in April of 2023, then I can definitely see the same happening without a doubt for The Hag on the 10th anniversary of his death in April of 2016 a few years from now in April of 2026.

What do you think?.

' src=

Speaking of Brad Paisley, what is going on in his camp? Hasn’t put an album out in going on six years now and really don’t hear from him much anymore. Have you heard anything Trigger?

' src=

I think it’s just a classic case of being put out to pasture by the industry. He’s one of the many victims of the Bro-Country era. I saw that he was playing Billy Bob’s, so I guess they’re no longer booking arenas for him. I hope he uses this moment to go back to his roots and do something cool.

' src=

After looking back a bit (and referencing Trigger’s amazing Google SEO), Brad got hammered by the “Accidental Racist” controversy. Further, you can look at Blake Shelton and Brad’s careers as parallels; if Blake didn’t have The Voice, he would have sunk into obscurity like Brad. One other issue may be Brad’s catalog, which is full of joke/gimmick/time-sensitive songs; while those songs do take talent to write and sing, they do not get airplay like more run-of-the-mill stuff (see the limited public memory of many songs by Tom T. Hall, Ray Stevens, and Roger Miller; joke songs just have a shelf life). Last, which is more subjective, Brad just doesn’t come across as likeable; even watching his insurance ads with Peyton Manning, he plays the straight man to a point where he seems to hate being there. At least Blake seems to enjoy himself and not take himself too seriously… as long as he’s not berating country legends.

' src=

Brad recently scored his 20th #1 single on country radio in February with “Freedom Was a Highway”, a duet with Jimmie Allen. As for a new album, Brad said in March to CMT, “I’ve written and done things, and I’ve taken my time. I just haven’t released any of it yet. But for now, it’s been nice to sort of sit on what I’m working on, and try to figure out with some clarity what’s next.”

' data-tf-not-load src=

maybe just enjoying some family time since his kids are in that “need their dad” stage? Brad just didn’t make a big deal about taking a “break” like almost every other artist does.

The stuff he put out in the early to mid 00’s was stellar. The music and lyrics were top notch. I saw him in concert about 5 years ago and he was good, but personally I could have done without the all the production and videos on the big screen. Cut the superfluous BS and get to the music.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I found “Part II” on cassette when I was going through some Rubbermaid totes this summer.

I don’t know why his legacy isn’t bigger. On those old albums he had the best lyrics in country at the time, and that crazy hellecaster John Jorgonson style guitar playing, and Mike Johnson / Randle Currie on steel guitar all over those albums. He was so freakin’ original. He’s still respected in the guitar community – I saw on Instagram that he was at a show with Billy Gibbons at a blues club in TX recently.

Get Michael Ray off a Jones tribute and that failed rapper Adkins

' data-tf-not-load src=

I would hope Georgette Jones would be one of the ‘to be announced’ artist’s included.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Well, Jersey Do you suppose Georgette and Nancy get along? Overall, not a bad lineup. There are a few others that would work well for this, I’m thinking Josh Turner for one, Mo Pitney as another. Hey, you think ol Isbell might want to join in? 🤣 ( laugh people, that was a joke)

' data-tf-not-load src=

Hope to see Alan Jackson added to the line up as well, despite his illness of late… such an advocate and friend of the ‘Possum from way back and early on…

' data-tf-not-load src=

Nancy must be getting short on cash.

that lineup is a joke – mostly made up of a bunch of has-beens who are just desperate for the exposure and to be tied to one of the greats. clearly she couldn’t get any current stars to commit this early, they want to wait and see if this falls through like the Museum did. also, who would want to have dinner with Nancy Jones the night before? all George’s kids should show up and make it awkward for her.

Mumarauder, I don’t know who of the current group of “stars” you think would be a good fit. Maybe Cody Jinks?

Very doubtful that the current SCM faves Childers or Zach Bryan or TT are even in the slightest bit influenced by Jones. Childers sites Ricky Skaggs as a primary influence, Zach sites TT and Childers as his influences, and I’m not really sure that that Evan Felker ever listened to Jones except in passing. I suppose Stapleton could fit the bill, but I’m guessing his cost would be at a premium. I think the 90s folks, or as you call them ” has beens” are a reasonable choice. They are all heavily informed and influenced by Jones. And maybe there’s the possibility that you personally are not a Jones fan….

Let’s also appreciate that some of these “has been’s” are on the upswing as 90s country is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. There are now multiple festivals planning their lineups around these types of artists.

If you were looking for artist from the new crop of musicians to pay tribute here, I would start with Logan Ledger, who is the closest singer to George we’ve got. Wouldn’t mind seeing those kinds of names added for early on to give the audience something to discover.

i understand and don’t completely disagree with the 90s resurgence, but really, this whole thing is just a money grab by Nancy, right? can anyone list other “death anniversary concerts” for other stars? did they do one for Cash? Ernest Tubb? Bill Monroe? Waylon Jennings? legit question, not trying to be sarcastic (anymore…).

' data-tf-not-load src=

There was a pretty famous one for Elvis in the uk ten years after his death that led to the pet shop boys covering you were always on my mind

' data-tf-not-load src=

I think it’s much better to book some true country artist like they have announced than the artist of today who aren’t the least bit country. Thank Goodness they didn’t schedule artist like Jelley Role. He shouldn’t be within 10 miles of a country venue.

' data-tf-not-load src=

When you order a tribute concert off of Wish.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I would give you nine thumbs up if I could!

If no one shows up on a lawnmower with a six pack of beer I’ll be extremely disappointed

' data-tf-not-load src=

The perfect Jones tribute would be for all the performers to get drunk and not show up.

‘Still Playin’ Possum: Music & Memories Of George Jones’ All-Star Tribute Concert Coming To Theaters

george jones tour 2023

Taylor Swift’s  Eras Tour  isn’t the only concert coming to the big screen.

Earlier this year, an all-star lineup came together in Huntsville, Alabama to pay tribute to the legendary George Jones . And for one night only, that show is coming to theaters across the country.

Still Playin’ Possum: Music & Memories Of George Jones  will be in theaters on October 17 for the one night only event, featuring the incredible performances recorded live from the sold-out tribute concert.

The show opened up with a jaw-dropping performance of “Who’s Going To Fill Their Shoes” from Jamey Johnson. And from there, artists like Wynonna, Jelly Roll, Dierks Bentley, Justin Moore, Tanya Tucker, and even Randy Travis came out to pay tribute to the greatest country singer of all time.

There was even a hilarious moment when Hot Country Knights lead singer Doug Douglason (who looks suspiciously like Dierks Bentley) came out on a lawnmower to open the second half of the show.

Tickets for the one-night-only showing in theaters, as well as a list of showings, are available now through Fathom Events. And if you missed the show in person, this is one you’re going to want to see.

George Jones concert lineup adds more stars to tribute to singer in Huntsville

The star-studded concert celebrating the music of all-time great country-singer George Jones keeps adding more stars. Artists newly added to that show, titled “Still Playin’ Possum,” a reference to Jones’ nickname, include: Aaron Lewis, Blackberry Smoke frontman Charlie Starr, Dillon Carmichael, Gretchen Wilson, Joe Nichols, Sara Evans, and Randy Travis.

Set for April 25 at the Propst Arena at Huntsville, Alabama’s Von Braun Center , the jaw-dropping lineup already was packed with Wynonna, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Jamey Johnson, Justin Moore, Lorrie Morgan, Mark Chesnutt, Michael Ray, Sam Moore, Tanya Tucker, Trace Adkins, Tracy Byrd, Tracy Lawrence and Travis Tritt.

Jones was a gifted country balladeer with a stirring voice. The Texas native’s classic hits include “She Thinks I Still Care,” “The Grand Tour,” “Tender Years” and heartbreaker supreme “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”

Tickets to the concert, being filmed for TV broadcast at a later date and channel yet to be name, quickly sold out. But after the lavish red-curtain-dappled stage was designed, that layout freed up some floor space. A rendering of the stage design, provided exclusive to AL.com by the VBC, is below.

George Jones

Some 300 additional tickets will be released 10 a.m. today via Ticketmaster and the Von Braun Center Box Office, located at 700 Monroe St. Prices are $95 and up, plus fees. All of those tickets are floor seats and some are front row. Prices for the initial/previous release of tickets started at $25 on up, plus fees.

The “Still Playin’ Possum” concert takes place 10 years after Jones died, at age 81. At the show, each artist will cover two of Jones’ songs onstage. For example, Wynonna and Jamey Johnson will sing “Golden Ring,” Jones’ powerful duet with Tammy Wynette, who Jones was married to at one point.

Jones’ widow, Nancy Jones, who was married to Jones for more than 30 years, is executive producer of the concert. She personally called the acts to see if they’d be interested in paying musical tribute to her late husband.

Asked what George might think of such an epic tribute to his music, Nancy says, “He’s probably up there sayin, ‘Honey, I can’t believe all those people love me that much.’”

Nancy says her excitement continues to build as the concert nears. “Who would have thought we would get this many artists?” she told AL.com Wednesday via phone. “That’s a formidable lineup. Twenty-plus, and more and more every day.”

She’s particularly excited Lewis was added to the show. “George and Aaron did a song together, ‘Country Boy,’” Nancy says. “He just fell in love with Aaron when they went into the studio, so I’m thrilled that he has jumped in.”

One of the reasons Huntsville’s Von Braun Center was picked for the concert was Jones was set to perform at that venue as part of his farewell tour before his 2013 passing. Plus, the Jones’ were fond of Huntsville, where the singer performed several concerts over his career.

An available $200 VIP upgrade for “Still Playin’ Possum” includes dinner the night before the George Jones celebration concert with Nancy Jones and special guests including Randy Travis. In other George Jones news, Nancy will publish a yet-to-be-titled book on Sept. 12. She says the book will be about “my life with George Jones. And the truth.”

Jelly Roll Is Going to Sing for George Jones at ‘Still Playin’ Possum’ Tribute Concert

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

From a performance last week on the CMT Music Awards to fronting Lynyrd Skynyrd on their own “Tuesday’s Gone,” Jelly Roll has been making it a habit of stealing the show. That’ll probably be the case when the imposing, face-tattooed country singer-rapper puts his spin on a George Jones song at Still Playin’ Possum: Music and Memories of George Jones , a tribute concert set for April 25 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Nancy Jones, the widow of Jones, is helping curate the lineup for Still Playin’ Possum , which is being filmed for broadcast. “I think the team of producers has put together some incredible moments that will surprise everyone. People will be laughing, crying, and singing along to so many of the songs performed that night,” she said in a statement. “It will be an emotional night not just for me, but also for these artists as so many were very close to George.”

Jelly Roll will release his new album Whitsitt Chapel on June 2. Last year, the Nashville-area native, born Jason DeFord, scored his first No. 1 country song with “Son of a Sinner.”

DO YOU KNOW GEORGE?

The Texas-born country singer-songwriter rose to international stardom during the 60s and never looked back, going down in history as one of the most influential country music singer-songwriters of all time. Often referred to as “The Possum,’   George   Jones ’ unorthodox road to fame started in Beaumont, Texas, where he played for tips on street corners. He later joined the U.S. Marine Corps, but ultimately decided to follow in the footsteps of his idol,  Hank Williams .

In 1959,   Jones ’ career took off as “White Lightnin’” landed at the top of the charts, making it his first #1 hit.   George ’s “Golden Voice” captured audiences around the world, and he kept them entertained through his music, his love life, and his wild spirit. With the nickname, “No Show   Jones ,”   George ’s incredibly loyal fans showed up to his concerts even when he didn’t. Over the course of his career,   Jones   collected five GRAMMYs, as well as multiple ACMs, CMAs, and  Billboard  awards.

Following a brief hiatus,   George   Jones   returned to the spotlight in 1980, releasing his most famous hit, “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Going down in history as arguably the greatest country song of all time, “He Stopped Loving Her Today” elevated The Possum’s name to an immortal level.

After multiple marriages—including one to country singer  Tammy Wynette —four children, late nights and no shows, and his infamous lawn mower ride to the liquor store,   George   turned his life around when he met his last wife,  Nancy Sepulvado . Many credit The Possum’s extended last years to Nancy’s positive impact.

George   Jones   had more country songs on the  Billboard  chart and more Top 40 songs than any country artist in history.

Although his influence expands over multiple genres, it’s most especially heard through the work of some of today’s most notable country artists, such as  Alan Jackson ,  Brad Paisley ,  Chris Stapleton ,  Kenny Chesney , and  Dierks Bentley . Although   George   is no longer with us, his story is long from over (he has 1.7 million fans on Facebook!) as the country music industry continues to tell it through music.

Recording Academy to honor Tammy Wynette with lifetime achievement award during Grammy  week

The renewed attention continues to roll in for country music legend Tammy Wynette as she experiences a revitalization of interest in her important career. In late 2022, the Showtime limited series George & Tammy about the tumultuous relationship between George Jones and Tammy Wynette received  massive audiences and rave reviews , causing many to reconsider Wynette’s catalog, and younger listeners to discover it for the first time. Jessica Chastain received an Emmy nomination for her role as Wynette. Now Tammy Wynette will be one of the 2024 recipients of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Announced on Friday, January 5th, Wynette will be honored with Gladys Knight, Donna Summer, the Clark Sisters, Laurie Anderson, and N.W.A. as Lifetime Achievement recipients. Wynette will receive the award during “Grammy Week” on February 3rd at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre as part of the Special Merit Awards Ceremony. Tammy Wynette earned the moniker of “The First Lady of Country Music” by becoming the first woman in country music to sell over one million albums. When Wynette released her signature single “Stand By Your Man” in 1968, it sold more than five million copies and became the largest-selling single ever recorded by a woman in country. She was the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year from 1968 to 1970, and won two Grammy Awards as well. Overall, Tammy Wynette sold more than 30 million records, grossing more than $100 million in sales, making her synonymous with country music. Though “Stand By You Man” might be her most identifiable song, Wynette often put the struggles of women into her music with songs like “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad,” and “Run Woman Run.” Wynette secured seventeen #1 songs overall. Tammy Wynette was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998, the same years she passed away at the age of 55 on April 6th. Wynette had suffered from a lifetime of health problems, which some credit for helping her put such incredible pain into so many of her performances.

Apple Sin Whiskey

front image asin.jpg

I'm happy to announce my Apple Sin Whiskey is now available!  Last year I partnered with my great friend, Spencer Balentine to make our apple cinnamon flavored whiskey.  We won 1st place in the International SIP Awards for best flavored whiskey.  It's made at Silent Brigade Distillery in Paducah, KY and can be purchased using the link provided here.  For now, it can be shipped to all states except DE and TN, but we have distribution coming very soon.  That means we can get into stores, bars, etc. and will be more widely available.  I'll keep you posted and I hope you'll give it a try and let me know what you think.  Thank you to all of you who have already done so.

Georgette honors Mothers Legacy on The Grand  Ole Opry

Singer-Songwriter  Georgette Jones , daughter of music icons Tammy Wynette and George Jones, made her 2023 Opry debut on April 6, honoring her mother’s passing twenty-five years ago. Jones will be performing My Man and Till I Can Make It On My Own. Joining her on the 6th will be Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Lauren Alaina, Lauren Mascitti, Wendy Moten, and Chuck Meade.

“The Opry and the Ryman were very important to mom,” says Jones. “She grew up listening to the Opry on WSM and always dreamed of having the honor of playing there. It really meant the world to her to stand in the circle and to be part of the Opry family. As a child, I ran the halls backstage along with many other artists’ children and grandchildren. I have the best memories being there not only for Opry appearances, but for award and TV shows as well. It was a big extended family environment that I am grateful to have experienced.” When asked if her mother had any favorite Opry memories, she recounted this story. Jones laughed and said: “Loretta, Mom, and Barbra Mandrell were all sharing a dressing room. That day was Barbra Mandrell’s anniversary, and her husband Ken had just gifted her with a pair of beautiful diamond earrings. She had misplaced them in the dressing room and panicked because she couldn’t find them. She said, ‘Ken’s going to kill me, help me find them.’ So, the three country legends got on their hands and knees intent on finding the earrings. Just then, Ken knocked on the door and stepped in, and a brutally honest Loretta blurted out ‘Barbra done lost her diamond earrings!’ and Barbra responded, ‘I told you not to tell him!’ and mom just fell on the floor hysterically laughing. In the end they found the diamond earrings, and all was well, but mom always loved to tell this story even years later. Can’t you just get the visual?”

"George & Tammy"

I'm thrilled at the response to our "George and Tammy" streaming series! It officially aired on December 8th, 2022 on Showtime and Paramount+ with the Showtime bundle. After the first episode aired, it is now the most watched premiere in Showtime history over nearly fifty years. We are so proud and blessed that Mom and Dad have so many wonderful fans! Thank you all for watching and for helping all to finally see their story unfold. I want to be sure to thank Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon for all their hard work, research and dedication to their roles and to Andrew Lazar and Josh Brolin for getting in touch with me in February, 2013 to be part of this project. But, most importantly, I have to thank Abe Sylvia for his vision and love of my parent's story that drove him to create this script in such a beautiful way! He understood the importance of the truth, but yet the importance of sharing their love and vulnerability, too. They interviewed over a hundred friends, artists, family and industry people along with viewing countless documents and video. They went beyond my best expectations. If you haven't yet seen it, I hope you check it out and enjoy it.

You and Me and Time

Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad

I Just Don't Give A Damn

received_10154277089163968_edited.jpg

Georgette Jones was born to Country Music legends and Hall of Fame couple, George Jones and Tammy Wynette. She's been singing on stage since she was three years old. At the age of ten, she recorded her first duet with her Father titled, "Daddy Come Home". After being a RN for seventeen years and raising her twin sons, she returned to music full time. She then recorded her second duet with her Father titled, "You and Me and Time".  Georgette has performed at the Opry, the Ryman and has toured across the US, Canada and overseas.  In addition to singing and songwriting, she is also an author. She co-wrote her biography, "The Three of Us", which was about her life growing up with her famous parents.  Georgette also acted in the TV series, "Sordid Lives" along side Leslie Jordan and Olivia Newton John.  She sang on it's soundtrack, as well.  Most recently, she is concentrating on her love of gaming and on bringing Country Music into the world of gaming.  A game lover since childhood, she is now streaming and enjoys connecting with fans and other gamers online.

george jones tour 2023

Who would've thought I'd be an online streaming gamer at this point in my life, right?  Well, I've loved games for as long as I can remember.  In fact, it all started with family game nights.  Then, Atari was born.  Eventually, I was a twelve year old at the arcade playing all kinds of games.  I also loved playing games with my twin sons when they were little.  Fast forward to 2015 when my husband convinced me to play Xbox Call of Duty.  I wasn't sure if I could do it since the games in my past weren't as complex, but I decided to try.  I went from one stick and a couple buttons to two sticks and multiple buttons.  Little did I know that my passion for gaming would reignite in a big way.  We play games on our downtime from touring and recently discovered there's so much we can do with online streaming.  I started with Q&A's and some games I love and it's a great way to connect with fans and other gamers.  Right now we're streaming three days a week, but are expanding to five days a week next month.  Plus, we are excited we'll be adding VR gaming as well as musical concerts.  Many of my friends in Country music are going to join me, too, for interviews, gaming and more.  I'm really looking forward to bringing Country music into the gaming community and to having a lot of fun with all who join us.
