Sharing is caring!

There are so many incredible places to visit in Argentina! From the stunning Iguazu Falls to the grand Perito Moreno, there are a variety of landscapes that Argentinians are proud of. The beach actually isn't one of those. So you may be wondering -why should I visit Mar del Plata then?

While the beaches certainly don't compare to those in Brazil , this coastal city remains one of the most popular vacation destination for porteños. I'm not going to lie- I didn't have such high hopes for our weekend getaway, but I ended up falling in love with Mar del Plata, and the unique charm that it has to offer.

In this guide I'm going to share all of the hidden gems we found throughout the city, the best beaches to visit, and some fun places to eat and drink. You'll learn how to get there, how to get around, and everything else you'll need to know for visiting- so let's dive right in to Argentina's favorite beach town!

Where is Mar del Plata?

Mar del Plata is located on the east coast of Argentina in the province of Buenos Aires . It is a little over 400 km south of the capital, and is 4 1/2-5 hours away driving.

where is Mar del Plata in Argentina

Mar del Plata is in the south of the province of Buenos Aires.

How to Get to Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata can be easily reached from Buenos Aires by flight, train, bus, or by renting a car.

Flying to Mar del Plata

The most convenient way to get to Mar del Plata is by hopping on a quick one-hour flight. Aerolineas Argentinas offers a few flights a day, and they leave conveniently out of AEP, which is the smaller airport located right inside the city.

Flight Tip:  Using Skyscanner you can check the calendar to see which are the cheapest dates for flying to Mar del Plata.

Search for a flight to Mar del Plata:

Trains to Mar del Plata

Another convenient option (and the cheapest) is to take the train from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata. Tickets are 2,700 pesos and the ride is 5 1/2 hours leaving from Plaza Constitucion. This is a great option if you are traveling with a lot of things, or want to have a fun ride with a group of friends.

They sell food on the train, you can bring your bike, and they have AC onboard Just make sure to book your train tickets early, as they sell out far in advance.

If you take the train, make sure to confirm your trip between 48-72 hours before your trip.

Buses to Mar del Plata

Another cheap option for getting to Mar del Plata is by taking the bus, which is a 6-hour ride. It's actually more expensive than the train, but there are way more options for times, and you can also get seats that recline all the way down if you want to sleep.

Typically, we use Busbud to book our bus tickets around the world. However, in Argentina there is a local site which is much cheaper! Rather than finding a ticket for $35 USD, the local site sells the tickets starting at 11,000 pesos ($12.50 USD), with fully reclining seats for around 16,000 pesos ($18,50 USD).

We suggest checking the site beforehand to see if there are seats open, and go directly in person to pay in cash, as this is the overall cheapest option.

Renting a Car to Visit Mar del Plata

We honestly think the most fun way to visit Mar del Plata is by taking a road trip. At just 4 1/2 hours away, it's not too far, and there is also an iconic medialuna place along the way called Atalaya.

We used Fede's mom's car, but you can easily rent a car in the city of Buenos Aires , or at either of the airports.

Argentina Entry Requirements

One of the most important things to know before traveling somewhere new is what the requirements for entering the country are. Here are the entry requirements for Argentina in regards to visas and Covid,

Visa Entry Requirements for Argentina

Argentina is a pretty accepting country when it comes to tourism, and there are many countries that can visit visa-free for a period of up to 90 days. The nationalities from the Americas that can visit Argentina  without a visa include  Bolivia ,  Brazil , Canada,  Colombia ,  Costa Rica ,  Chile ,  Ecuador ,  El Salvador,  Guatemala,  Guyana ,  Honduras ,  Mexico ,  Nicaragua ,  Panama , Paraguay , Peru , St Kitts, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines,  Suriname , Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay , and the USA .

European countries which can visit Argentina visa-free include Andorra , Armenia, Austria , Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria ,  Croatia , Czech Republic , Cyprus ,  Denmark ,  Estonia , Finland, France,  Georgia ,  Germany ,  Greece ,  Hungary ,  Ireland , Iceland , Italy , Latvia, Liechtenstein , Lithuania, Luxembourg , Macedonia , Malta, Monaco,  Montenegro , Norway , Netherlands, Poland, Portugal ,  Romania ,  Russia , San Marino,  Serbia , Slovakia, Slovenia , Spain , Sweden,  Switzerland ,  Turkey ,  United Kingdom , and Vatican City.

Other nationalities that can stay for up to 90 days in Argentina include Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Mongolia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand , and the  United Arab Emirates . Venezuelans can stay for a period of up to 60 days, and people from Grenada, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, and Malaysia can stay for a period of up to 30 days.

Covid Entry Requirements for Argentina

Covid is finally a thing of the past in Argentina. All requirements have now been dropped, so you can freely enter the country whether or not you are vaccinated. Masks are no longer necessary, nor do many people wear them anymore.

Mar del Plata Local Adjustments

Whenever traveling to new cities or countries, there are certain things that may be different than home. These are what we like to call "local adjustments" and are something we include in all of our guides. Here are some of them that you should know about for when you visit Mar del Plata in Argentina.

What Language Do They Speak in Argentina?

The official language in Mar del Plata is the same language as the rest of Argentina, which is Spanish.

Currency in Argentina

The currency used in Argentinian peso. Currently (October 2023) the official exchange rate is 350 pesos for every USD. There are actually a lot of different exchange rates though, and if you bring USD, you can exchange your pesos at the blue dollar rate, which is 870 pesos.

Due to the insane inflation in Argentina, exchange rates change every day, and can be wildly different from the previous week, or from other exchange rates.

We suggest sticking to cash, as this is the best way to have affordable prices in Argentina.

Plug Types in Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata uses plug type I, which has three prongs- the bottom one which is vertical, and two above it that are slanted towards one another. Argentina runs on a 220 V supply voltage and 50 Hz.

There are very few countries that use this same plug type, two of them being Australia and New Zealand. If you are coming from any other country, you will need to get a travel adapter.

Can You Drink the Tap Water in Mar del Plata?

The tap water in Mar del Plata is perfectly safe for drinking. We suggest asking for tap water in restaurants, and bringing a reusable water bottle to fill up for when you're at the beach or exploring.

Tipping Culture in Mar del Plata

The tipping culture in Argentina is similar to many other countries around the world. While it is never actually mandatory, it is customary to leave an extra 10% tip on top of your bill while out to eat.

Why Should I Visit Mar Del Plata?

Argentina certainly isn't known for its beaches, and there are so many incredible places to see! So why should you visit Mar del Plata?

Mar del Plata is the closest major beach area to the city of Buenos Aires , and it is a really cool mix of city and sea. It has gorgeous German architecture, fun nightlife, and is an easy getaway from the busy capital.

things to do in Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata has a great variety.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata

Now you know why you should visit Mar del Plata, but what exactly is there to do? Actually- there is much more to do than you may have thought! Although it's most popular for its beaches, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this great city.

Don't have time to read the whole article and want to save it for later? Just pin it!

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #1: Relax at the Beach Clubs

There are a ton of beaches to choose from in Mar del Plata, and many of them are super wide and long. On the biggest beaches such as Playa Grande for example, there are beach clubs lined up. They are super affordable, and you'll find people renting cabanas, or getting access to chairs, umbrellas, bathrooms, servers, and even pools.

If you're going with a group of friends, staying at a beach club is a great option as you'll have plenty of amenities, and room for keeping your belongings safe.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #2: Take Surf Lessons

One of my favorite things to do in Mar del Plata is to surf! (Although I am truly awful at this sport). There are surf schools with some of the most affordable rates in the world, and they have all of the gear included. The instructors take small groups, and have personalized attention, making it perfect for beginners.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #3: Visit the Sea Lions

One of the cutest things to experience while in Mar del Plata is the Sea Lion Reserve. It's a protected area where you can view the sea lions from behind the gate over the water.

Watch them cuddle, fight, and play in their natural habitat, for free of charge! Just remember a change of clothes for after, because the smell is definitely not something you'll want to take as a memory.

It's incredible to see the sea lions in their natural habitat.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #4: Walk Around the Port

Right by the Sea Lion Reserve is the port area of Mar del Plata. While it certainly has a distinct smell from the sea lions nearby, it definitely is a cute place to walk around and browse the restaurants and shops.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #5: Check out the Casino Central

Casino Central is not just a gamblers' haven, but it is actually one of the most iconic buildings in the city. Dating back to 1939, the beautiful red casino is perched right in front of Bristol Beach, and visiting it is one of the top things to do in Mar del Plata.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #6: Snap a Photo With the Sea Lion Statues

Right in front of the casino is another attraction that brings visitors to Bristol Beach. Mar del Plata is known for its sea lions, and you can actually find several statues of them, the most popular ones being the ones facing the beach.

The Sea Lions are a symbol of the city of Mar del Plata.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #7: Hang Out at Plaza Colon

Located just in front of Bristol Beach is Mar del Plata's most beloved public square. Plaza Colon is a wide green space with palm trees, statues, and a traditional carousel.

Plaza Colon has a traditional carousel in the corner.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #8: Stop by Basilica de los Santos Pedro y Cecilia

If you're looking for some beautiful historical buildings in Mar del Plata, then make sure to head over to the incredible Basilica and admire its Neo-gothic style.

Mar del Plata cathedral

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #9: Roam the Weekend Market

Another great reason for visiting the cathedral is for the weekend market that happens right in front of it. If you're looking for something special to take home with you, or to support locals, then this is a great place to stop by if you happen to be in town on a Saturday or Sunday.

There are markets open on the weekends in Mar del Plata.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #10: Enjoy the Views from Plaza España

Plaza España is definitely not a crazy interesting square. However, it does have two paths you can follow along the sea towards the more northern beaches in town. You can walk along the water, or choose to walk on the road above from some nice views of the surrounding area.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #11: Have a Bite at Torreon del Monje

While we do have a food & drink section in this article, we can't help but mention Torreon del Monje as a highlight for things to do in Mar del Plata.

This restaurant is perched right on a cliff over the water, and the building looks just like a small castle. It is a super iconic place, so definitely don't miss out on seeing it, and grabbing a bite there.

Torreon del Monje is one of the most iconic places in Mar del Plata.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #12: Visit Torre Tanque

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #13: Check Out Stella Maris Church

There's not too much to say about this one, except that it's another nice church. Stella Maris Church is just around the block from Torre Tanque, so definitely worth just popping in to see its beautiful gothic style.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #14: Stop by Villa Normandy

When it comes to architecture, this is definitely one of the most beautiful pieces in the city. Villa Normandy has a German style, and dates back to over a century ago.

The final building on our tour for you is the city hall. Located in the heart of Mar del Plata, this building is known for its clock tower.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #17: Watch the Sunrise at Playa Punta Mogotes

When we told our friends that we were waking up for sunrise in Mar del Plata to shoot at the beach, they thought we were crazy!

Well, turns out that in the morning the tide is super low, creating stunning reflections in the sand at Punta Mogotes. If you go to bed early, or party all night long, we definitely suggest making it over here for a magical sunrise like we did.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #18: Walk Along Playa los Acantilados

When I told my local friends I wanted to go to the cliffs in Mar del Plata they looked at me like a crazy person.

As the sun was about to set we drove down the coast, and couldn't believe that there were in fact cliffs in the area! The large grassy area hangs over the beach, making it a truly unique place to experience in Mar del Plata.

We also loved that you can walk a windy path below to get down the beach, and the vies looking down towards it were really something else!

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #19: Have a Merienda at La Cabaña del Bosque

Looking for a truly unique dining experience in Mar del Plata? Well, head to the forest area and you'll find the cutest restaurant ever.

Full of hand carved wood and lush greenery, this is the perfect place for a "merienda", which is the snack between lunch and dinner for Argentineans. Have some tea or coffee and backed goods in the late afternoon and enjoy the incredible vibe of this hidden gem.

Things to Do in Mar del Plata #20: Ride the Tren de la Alegria

If you're with kids (or just want to bring the youth out in you) then definitely check out the Tree de Alegria AKA the Train of Happiness.

It's a train that goes around the city while playing music, and there are characters like Spiderman or other superheroes that ride along making it really something else.

Local Food & Drink

Argentina is known for its great meat and wine. However, being located on the beach, you can also find some great seafood in Mar del Plata!

We've written a full guide for foods to try while in Argentina, which you can check out below.

Favorite Restaurants & Bars in Mar del Plata

Here are a few of the places we tried and really recommend in Mar del Plata.

Torreon del Monje

This place is an absolute must while in Mar del Plata! (This is also why we mentioned it as a highlight). Torreon del Monje looks like a little castle, and has a beautiful restaurant inside, as well as a big terrace overlooking the sea. They are always super busy, so expect longer than usual waits, and make a reservation ahead if possible.

Torreon del Monje, best restaurants in Mar del Plata

Torreon del Monje is the most iconic restaurant in Mar del Plata.

This is definitely one of the restaurants with the best food in Mar del Plata! Tio Curzio is a restaurant that is family-run and has delicious Italian-inspired dishes like homemade pastas and risottos. It's located right next to the water, and has both indoor and outdoor dining options.

Tio Curzio, best restaurants in Mar del Plata

La Cabaña del Bosque

This is the spot we mentioned before for merienda, and one that you can't miss out on! It's really a hidden gem of the area, and unlike any other place you'll visit in Mar del Plata.

Getting Around Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata is actually much bigger than we thought! While we walked to most things within 15-25 minutes, there were certainly places that we needed transportation for. We loved having a car for some of the things that were a bit further away such as the cliff and forest area of the city.

If you are coming from Buenos Aires, have a group of people, or simply want to explore a lot in a little time, then having a rental car is a great idea (you can also rent a car in Mar del Plata ). We'd try to stick walking around the center, and using the car just when necessary to avoid issues finding parking in the city center.

If you don't have a car but want to explore outside the city center, you can also get around by the public buses in Mar del Plata, or by getting cabs which are pretty easy to come by in the city center.

Where to Stay in Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata has a variety of places to stay, and depending on what kind of trip you want to have will depend on your stay.

When Fede's friends visit Mar del Plata they often times rent big Airbnbs or rentals in the woods. This is great if you have a large group, and if someone has a car.

We stayed right in the heart of the city center, just a block away from the beach (Playa Bristol). We found this to be perfect as we were able to walk to the beach and top things to do in Mar del Plata, as well as have plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Is Mar del Plata Safe?

Argentina is certainly a country that has its issues in regards to safety, so it's always important to be careful while traveling. Mar del Plata has mostly petty crime similar to Buenos Aires such as theft.

We honestly felt very safe walking around at night, and didn't have any issues, but did hear from locals that it's best to watch out in the city center. Try to avoid wearing flashy things, walking around alone, or leaving your belongings out of sight.

It's really about just being a bit extra mindful, and trying to stick to groups rather than watering around solo.

15 Best Things to Do in Mar del Plata (Argentina)

Mar del Plata is the most visited city in Argentina after Buenos Aires, probably because it’s the most popular beach destination in the country by far.

“Mardel,” as the locals call it, has fabulous restaurants serving fresh seafood, a port packed with traditional fishing boats and cute sea lions, handicraft markets, and amazing nightlife.

You’ll find art museums and shopping, plus trendy neighborhood streets lined with cafes, bars, and parks.

You’ll have your pick of beaches, obviously, but the city is also home to casinos, theaters, an aquarium, and even a couple of water parks for when you’ve had your fill of the sandy shores.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Mar del Plata :

1. Hit the Beaches

Mar del Plata - Beach

The beaches are the main reason people come to Mar del Plata, but be warned that in the summertime (December through March) they can get super crowded.

There’s free public beach access, but get there early to reserve your spot! You can rent chairs or an umbrella for the day, and if you want to get away from the crowds, you can rent a private tent a little farther from the water.

Private beach clubs occasionally have swimming pools that you can use as well.

Playa Varese and Playa Iglesia are popular beaches located downtown with cafes and shops nearby.

Playa Grande is also central, with lots of bars and restaurants around, and you’ll find surf rentals and lessons available here.

South of the city, make your way to calmer, less crowded beaches like Punta Mogotes, located near the lighthouse, and Playa Serena even further south.

Playa Escondida is a legal nude beach about 15 miles (25 km) away from town, if you’re into that.

2. Torre Tanque

Torre Tanque

A fun activity for families and a romantic adventure for couples, climb the water tower in Mar del Plata for the best views around.

There’s also a free elevator to the top (powered by water) where you’ll find the lookout point and brilliant 360-degree views of the coast and the city.

It’s actually a working water tank owned by the town water company.

If you want to learn how everything works and see all the meters and machinery, staff can give you an explanatory tour.

Sunset is the best time to visit and there are often concerts on the lawn here during the summer.

3. Centro Cultural Villa Victoria Ocampo

Villa Victoria

This house was the summer residence of Argentine writer and socialite Victoria Ocampo.

The entire home was transported from England to Argentina by boat, and now visitors can venture around for a look back in time to see how the high society spent their vacations in the early 20th century.

You’ll find photos of many famous people who visited with the prominent Ocampo during those days and even some of the original furniture and elegant fixtures.

Guests also come for the architecture, rotating cultural and art displays, beautiful gardens, and summer concerts and theatrical events.

4. Eat Some Great Seafood

Seafood

Being by the sea, it’s no surprise that Mar del Plata has a ton of excellent restaurants serving up fresh seafood, and the calamari here is especially plentiful.

In January, the city celebrates the Fiesta Nacional de los Pescadores (Festival of the Fishermen) with local seafood feasts and a parade through town.

For dining, Sur is the well-established favorite for seafood, consistently called the best in town, and it’s almost always crowded.

La Marina is also popular with locals, serving up delicious yet unpretentious seafood in big portions.

Viento en Popa offers high quality fish as well, and Chichilo lets you pick your seafood out at the counter.

If you’d prefer something a little fancier with a great location, check out La Piazza or Alito.

5. Aquarium Mar del Plata

Aquarium Mar del Plata

This impressive city aquarium is not only home to colorful tanks of fish, but their grounds are filled with natural lagoons, an aviary, and a saltwater lake.

There’s a touch pool so you can get up close and personal with the sea life and shows which feature performances by dolphins and sea lions.

At one of the most modern aquariums in South America, you can learn more about the local flora and fauna by visiting the marine mammals, birds, sharks, and even a few rescued animals that they rehabilitate here.

You can actually buy your ticket for the day, check out the exhibits, and then use the aquarium’s boardwalk and private beach!

6. Go to a Water Park

Aquasol

If you’ve had enough beach time, take the whole family to one of the water parks around Mar del Plata.

A short drive north of the city, Aquasol is a huge water park that includes a great wave pool, lots of waterslides, a zip-line, and a lazy river.

Admission is cheap, you can rent things like lockers, floats, and umbrellas, and there’s a restaurant for meals.

Just outside the city, you’ll also find the popular Aquopolis with a big variety of water slides (including a few extreme ones), nice areas for younger kids to play and get wet, and affordable snacks and drinks.

They also have grills and picnic tables available if you want to bring your own food for the day.

7. Museo de Arte Contemporáneo

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo

An icon within the city, MAR is a newer museum and it features contemporary artwork, including pop art, sculptures, and various pieces by famous Argentine artists.

The building itself is super sleek and modern, facing the sea, with bright spaces and rotating exhibits.

They also have workshops where kids can paint with acrylics.

Perhaps the most popular work is the giant sea lion sculpture out front which was originally constructed out of golden alfajor wrappers by Marta Minujín (she’s known for making art out of edible stuff). Admission is free, and you’ll also find a library and a cafe on site.

8. Puerto Mar del Plata

Puerto Mar del Plata

Mar del Plata has a thriving fishing industry, so head down to the port to watch the red, orange, and yellow ships return with their daily catches.

There’s a scenic wharf – la Banquina de Pescadores – where tourists can stroll and take photos.

You’ll find souvenir stands and lots of cheap, fresh seafood from vendors here where you can grab some great fried calamari.

While you’re here, be sure to walk down and pay a visit to the city’s population of sea lions at the reserve where they come to take shelter before leaving to mate on the shores of Uruguay.

The reserve is a national monument and it’s home to up to 800 male sea lions.

9. Do Some Local Shopping

Diagonal de los Artesanos

Visit Mar del Plata’s craft fair – Diagonal de los Artesanos – which has up to 200 vendors each day of the week during summertime.

Located along the Plaza San Martín and Diagonal Pueyrredon, it’s a great place to do your souvenir shopping as they sell traditional mate gourds, knitted sweaters, silver jewelry, and leather goods.

Outside of peak season, the fair is only held on Saturday and Sunday.

The Feria de Artesanos del Torreón is a similar handicraft market located next to Playa Varese with around 80 stalls where you can find artisans who’ll often make crafts to your specifications.

If that’s not enough, visit the laid back Mercado de las Pulgas (flea market) in Plaza Rocha for all the old stuff you could ever need.

10. Torreón del Monje

Torreón del Monje

Built during Mar del Plata’s more glamorous heyday, this imposing medieval-style landmark is located on along the rocks next to the ocean at Punta Piedras.

The Torreón del Monje looks like a castle with its lookout tower, red domes, and stone footbridge, though now it’s just a restaurant and event space.

A bit of a city landmark, it was initially built by businessman Ernesto Tornquist in his attempts to beautify the town that surrounded his summer villa.

Don’t expect too much from the food, but do stop by for a look around, some great views, and maybe a drink out on the terrace just next to the shoreline.

11. Take a DIY Walking Tour of the City

Bahia Varesse - Mar del Plata

See what the downtown Mar del Plata has to offer on foot.

The streets around Playa Varese and Playa Grande have the best views and architecture, while Güemes, a hip street and centro comercial has tons of cool shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes.

Check out Peatonal San Martín, the pedestrian street which is across from the grand Casino Central.

At Plaza San Martín, you’ll find the Catedral de los Santos Pedro y Cecilia, the city’s main cathedral, built in neo-Gothic style with stained glass windows and a French chandelier.

Be sure to stroll La Rambla, the large boardwalk that’ll lead you past sea lion sculptures and several beaches.

Then wander down Calle Alem, known for its restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

Grab some churros and relax during sunset in the Parque General San Martín for great views of Playa Grande.

12. Take a Day Trip to Sierra de los Padres

Sierra de los Padres

If you fancy a calm, nature-filled trip outside the city, head to the little town of Sierra de los Padres and the nearby Laguna de los Padres.

It’s only a 20-minute drive, and the lagoon in the middle of this wooded area provides a breath of fresh air with trails you can walk along and grills for having an asado.

You’ll find forests, a small mountain range, canoes for rent, and the remains of a Jesuit mission nearby.

The peaceful village of Sierra de los Padres is filled with quaint souvenir shops and restaurants where you can have a platter of picadas (cold meats, olives, and cheeses) while enjoying the serene atmosphere.

13. Take a Boat Ride

Crucero Anamora

Take a short boat cruise to see the city of Mar del Plata from the water and learn more about its history.

Crucero Anamora takes passengers on a journey around the harbour for an hour or two, venturing to important city landmarks like Cape Corrientes, the sea lion reserve, the main fish-processing plant, and Mar del Plata Naval Base.

With three decks on the ship, you can enjoy the salty ocean air outside or sit inside by the windows.

There’s even a cafe on the lower level where you can grab a coffee and a medialuna (or a beer) for the ride.

14. Check out the City’s Nightlife and Entertainment

Sobremonte - Mar del Plata

With theaters, bowling alleys, bars, nightclubs, and multiple casinos, nightlife is one of the biggest draws to Mar del Plata for visitors, especially during the summer.

If you’re into gambling or just want to see one of the most historic and architecturally significant buildings in the city, check out the Casino Central.

For concerts, shows, and plays, check out the schedules at the Radio City, Roxy, and Melany theaters of the Centro de Arte, or go for a great tango show at Teatro Colón.

For nightclubs, party until late at any of the hotspots along Avenida Constitucion – Sobremonte is super popular.

And in the summer, catch a beach party when the sand turns into a live music venue and dance floor.

15. Go Deep Sea Fishing

Fishing

Arrange to head out into the ocean and try some fishing with experienced guides.

They’ll supply the boat, the gear, the bait, and the knowledge, taking you out to prime locations and showing you which lures and methods to use.

You’ll depart from one of the clubs in the harbor early in the morning and lunch is typically provided.

Reel in sea bream, trout, grouper, and yellowtail, then haul your catches back to town that afternoon.

Some tour companies will gut and clean your fish so that they’re ready to eat, and others even offer to cook one for you.

Best Things to Do in Mar del Plata, the Happy City

' src=

I have always loved Mar del Plata because it’s where I was born, but now that I am a tourist there myself, I see what life is like in this beautiful city. It has changed my perception of how wonderful living by the ocean can be.

I haven’t been to Mar del Plata for four years, and the truth is that after 4 long years, I finally made it back. My sister and nephew even managed to come along too!

And it’s not the same to organize for two then four, more when we have different friendships, it wasn’t a holiday, and people work, so in the morning we visited the city a little bit, and in the afternoon we stayed with family and friends.

Mar del Plata Ramblas

In total, in Mar del Plata we spent 1 week, in which we visited family, and friends and of course, I had to do some sightseeing to tell you about my city, since every time I go it is different!

Mar del Plata, the city that saw me born

mar del plata, Argentina

It is a tourist town, about 400 km from Capital Federal ( Buenos Aires City ), has about one million inhabitants, and about 40 kilometers of coastline with different beaches.

There is always something to do. For example, in summer, there are free concerts, surfing, the Film Festival is held, the Sea Festival, the Valencian “Fallas” are held, etc.

The truth is that it is beautiful, not because it is my city that has nothing to do, lol.

Mar del Plata, the happy city

travel fest mar del plata

Mar del Plata is called “La Feliz” or “the happy city,” but no one agrees on why this name.

Some say it is because when the worker started to enjoy the vacation, they went to Mar del Plata, the whole family and all were seen happy.

Others say it is by the name of the ranch of Patricio Peralta Ramos, founder of the city. I prefer the way when people go; they’re happier.

Check out: Best Travel Insurance for your trips .

There are several areas in Mardel, depending on what you want to do. Usually, I visit Mar del Plata every two years, which is always different.

So it isn’t easy to name a place to go. You’ll have to ask in your hotel…

The pub area in Mar del Plata changes every time I go, sometimes it is in Irigoyen St. and sometimes in Alem Ave, and now it has joined Güemes St.

Taxi drivers are the same all over the world…

It was the first time I went with Fer to Mar del Plata; we took a taxi from downtown to my home, well, my grandparents’ home.

What do you do in a taxi when you go with someone? Talk, right?

Well, you can see that the taxi driver heard Fer speak Spanish, with a Spanish accent obviously, and I think that my Argentine accent is no longer so marked or it may be because I use words from Spain that the taxi driver must have thought this is time to scam tourists.

To get to my house, I tell you it depends where you come by an avenue, and as Mar del Plata is gridded, one street goes one way and the next in the opposite direction.

If you go down this avenue, my street is in a forbidden direction, then you can turn left in the street before or the next one, but which wanted to take this man, no idea. I think he wanted to take us for a walk through the port and then take us home.

If you pass the second street, you only have one more left before you got to an avenue when you passed the second option.

There I was, angry, and I made it known. He apologized and blah blah blah, but you didn’t get a sense of the anger I had when I realized he wanted to scam us.

So, be careful with this, everywhere you go!

lobos marinos en mar del plata

Driving in Mar del Plata

Another anecdote is from this last trip; my cousin lent us his car in Buenos Aires to use it in Buenos Aires and in Mar del Plata.

We’re in Mar del Plata, at my grandparents’ house and we say we’re going to the southern beaches. So we went out with my sister, Fer and me.

We went through the harbor; first, we saw the SeaWolves reserve, and before we pulled to the south, we passed Punta Mogotes, and my sister said to have a drink in Waikiki (the beach that follows Punta Mogotes), so we headed towards Waikiki.

But one of the “beautiful” things about Mar del Plata is signaled on the streets, as it was unclear where we had to turn.

We went through the parking lot of Punta Mogotes, which obviously did not arrive but we could leave the car and walk, but we decided to try again, so we went out to pick up the avenue again or kind of highway to take us south, but as the signaled shines by its absence.

We went the other way and saw that we were going to end up in the opposite lane of this highway, so we reversed; it would have been about 100 meters or less,

Vero at Mar del Plata

And that we see when we are doing this donkey, that there was a police in a quad looking at us, we already think we are going to get a fine, we’re driving reckless, an opposite sense… blab blab, but no, the police are, they looked at us, waited for us to finish and left, he didn’t make us a gesture of what you’re doing!!!

So we already understood why Mar del Plata drives worse than in Buenos Aires because nobody tells them anything.

We were already hallucinating that everyone skipped the traffic lights, and when we asked our friends or family, they would tell us: it was because of insecurity.

If I’m clear at 11 in the morning and also crossing them at 100 km/h, what I think is that they’ve been savaged, don’t take it the wrong way; if there’s any marplatense reading this, I’ve driven a motorbike until I left mardel. It wasn’t driving like this, and if you did, you’d be fined (I speak from experience, hehe).

On the subject of insecurity, in the week we were there, we didn’t see it, what’s more, we saw a living city, with people everywhere.

It is also true that we did not go into any strange place, just as in Madrid, I do not go to…

Another thing is that when you leave the tourist area, the streets are a bit bad and it looks like a different city. And it would be nice to be looked after everywhere alike, not only for the tourist but also for the people there.

If you ever go around La Feliz, have to eat some churros in Manolo (it’s in Alem, downtown and on the coast), some Boston “Facturas,” it would be nice if you could have a drink at La Princesa, but it’s gone.

I would give you more places, but every time I go, they have new names. You can eat well almost everywhere, and the customer attention is excellent, and you have to leave a tip. Eating is still cheap, despite inflation.

I’m probably doing another post to Mar del Plata another day.

Thank you for reading this far!

No volvería a contratarlos.

Mar del Plata: Seven Argentine Directors Debut At Fest

MAR DEL PLATA– Seven Argentine helmers debut in Argentine competition section at the 30th Mar del Plata International Festival .

The twelve-features section offers a current prospect of Argentina’s industry muscle. Showcase features dramas, comedies, four docus, a thriller. Interestingly, four pics are helmed by director duos.

First-timer Francisco Varone directs a medium-age coming-of-ager, a road movie from Argentina to Bolivia gathering two very different cultures in “ Road to La Paz ,” starring Rodrigo de la Serna (Walter Salles’ “The Motorcycle Diaries”) and stage actor Ernesto Suarez. Having won prizes for commercials at Cannes and San Sebastian, Varone shared the 55th Cartagena Festival’s inaugural PuertoLab prize, its first post-production award, with “Paz,” a co-production between Argentina, Netherlands, Germany, and Quatar. L.A.-based Figa Films handles sales.

Also working a road-movie frame, Fernando Salem’s pop-art feel-good comedy “How Most Things Work” offers a portrait of Celina, who searches for answers about her family’s identity, after her father’s death. Salem’s currently prepping his sophomore effort, an adaptation of Romina Paula’s novel “Agosto.

In debutant Diego Lublinsky and Alvaro Urtizberea (“Tres minutos”) deadpan comedy “Hortensia,” the father of the main character also dies –now electrocuted when opening the fridge. Pic turns on a young woman who is fired and also her boyfriend, who is cheating on her with her best friend, to boot. In the middle of despair, Hortensia finds a note, written by herself at 14. It begins: “Goals to be happy.”

First-timer Matias Scarvaci, alongside Diego Gachassin (“Vladimir in Buenos Aires”) direct “Docile Bodies,” about the jail system melding documentary and fictionalized reality. Title recreates a chapter heading from French thinker Michel Foucault’s essay “Discipline and Punish.”

A third directorial duo: Debutants Juan Fernandez Gebauer and Nicolas Suarez with “Easy Ball,” depicting soccer fanaticism.

“The Football Boys” describes soccer from an observational, documentary point of view, analyzing the illusion of so many kids –sometimes others’ illusions– to break into the soccer big time. “Football” marks the third feature from Jorge Leandro Colas.

Set on a country farm, Eugenio Canevari’s opera prima “Paula” follows a young woman working as a maid in a house of middle-house employers who gets pregnant. “Paula” participated at Mar del Plata ‘s 2014 Work In Progress.

Based on Leonardo Oyola’s novel, “Kryptonite” is a thriller, inspired by the super heroes genre, set against the harsh background of a day-to-day reality in a public hospital in Buenos Aires’ province. Helmer Nicanor Loreti won best film in 2012 in Mar del Plata’s Argentina Competition with “Diablo.”

Benjamin Naishtat’s sophomore feature “El Movimiento” is set in 1835, a time of national chaos in Argentina. Naishtat’s debut, last year’s “History of Fear,” played at Locarno and Berlin main section. “Fear” won San Francisco’s New Directors and Jeonju’s Grand Prize awards. “Movimiento” is a co-production between Argentina and South Korea.

A scientific mockumentary echoing experimental cinema master Chris Marker, “Pequeño diccionario de la electricidad” turns on a pioneer in electricity energy applied to the audiovisual media field. The fourth helmers duet – Carolina Rimini and Gustavo Galuppo (“La creación de un mundo”) have directed.

Documentarian German Kral’s hybrid docu-fiction “Our Last Tango” surveys this dance fascination through two of the new tango dance main exponents, Juan Carlos Copes and Maria Nieves Rego. Kral has worked with Wim Wenders, who produced his “Musica cubana.”

The awaited “The Spider’s Lullaby” offers a portrait of Simon, a hardware’s owner and his raw relationship with his four employees. A suburban fable about how xenophobia, humiliation and confrontation fester within ordinary human lives. Jose Celestino Campusano (“Leo’s Room”) directs.

Argentine Competition section will face the jury scrutiny of journalist and Austin Fest programmer Todd Brown, Mexican producer-distributor Maximiliano Cruz (Julio Hernandez Cordon’s “I Promise You Anarchy,” Nicolas Pereda’s “Greatest Hits”), and Nina Rodriguez, program director at Mexico’s Guanajuato Fest.

The Mar del Plata International Film Festival runs Oct. 30–Nov. 7.

Mar del Plata International Film Festival

39 th Edition

The Mar del Plata International Film Festival, organized by the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA), promotes the film and audiovisual activity in all of its forms, screening films of different origins, and supporting thematic diversity and styles. In it, the tradition of classic cinema coexists with new tendencies, new voices and new technologies.

travel fest mar del plata

First there is the Competitive section. For each edition, members of the jury are carefully selected to award films from the International Competition, Latin American Feature Film and Short Film Competitions, plus the Argentine Feature Film, Short Film Competition, Altered States Competition and Work In Progress categories.

Secondly, Panorama is the section where viewers can find the best and latest works of international production. Acclaimed filmmakers and new talents combine with diverse subject matters in sections such as as Mar de Chicos, targeted to younger audiences, Original Soundtrack, featuring films where music plays the leading role, or Super 8 –16 mm– a tribute to historical formats, in sections such as Hora Cero, Generación VHS and Las Venas Abiertas, among others.

Number three is the Tributes and Retrospectives section that seeks to revisit the work of prestigious directors putting them back into circulation. This section also prompts new trends by focusing on current filmmakers that would otherwise not make it to the theaters. It is a key section that values works based on their cultural legacy for present and future cinema.

Fourth is the Rescues section, where national and international film heritage comes to life for audiences to enjoy some of the industry’s former glories. The Festival is also characterized by its appealing special events: master classes, round tables, book presentations, special screenings and seminars on new cinema critique. The 2018 edition also hosted the first edition of the successful Cinema and Gender Perspective Forum, a key space for reflection that exposed the inequalities of the audiovisual industry.

Argentina’s New President Javier Milei Defunds Film-TV Agency INCAA, Ventana Sur

INCAA

Argentina’s right-wing populist president Javier Milei is forging ahead with his administration’s plans to defund the country’s film-TV institute INCAA , which will adversely impact national film festivals such as the Mar del Plata and federal aid for national film releases, state-run cinemas and film schools, among others. It also jeopardizes the prominent Buenos Aires-based film and TV market, Ventana Sur , which is jointly organized by INCAA and Cannes’ Marché du Film.

Popular on Variety

The move comes after Milei’s omnibus bill proposed in January, which would have scrapped INCAA, failed to pass, after massive protests and a petition signed by the world’s most celebrated filmmakers made an impact.

Hernan Findling, president of Argentina’s Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, said that they recently held a meeting with the newly appointed head of INCAA, Carlos Pirovano, “The resolution is very clear regarding all the cuts to be made in the Institute, which will at least freeze the industry for four months,” he told Variety .

“Regarding Ventana Sur, we firmly believe from the Academy that it is an Argentine stronghold (along with Marché du Film) that must be defended and preserved. We presented this to Mr. Pirovano, who listened to us but firmly clarified that there is NO money for Ventana Sur this year and mentioned the possibility of holding it elsewhere,” he added.

“At the moment, we from the Academy are evaluating alternative proposals (Pirovano said he would listen to proposals as long as they don’t involve putting money from INCAA) so that Ventana Sur continues to develop in Argentina,” said Findling, a producer-director whose credits include sci-fi horror title “Virtual Reality” and drama “No Corre el Viento.”

According to Findling, Pirovano, who has been criticized for his lack of experience in the film sector, also said he understood the importance of the Mar del Plata Festival [Latin America’s only Class-A festival], but it would have to be financed through private funding from hereon.

Another massive protest is being planned on Thursday, March 14, said filmmaker Celina Murga (“Ana and the Others”). The Argentine film community, which has banded in the newly formed coalition Cine Argentino Unido, has issued its own rebuttal to the government’s actions, saying:“The newly appointed President of the INCAA (National Institute of Cinema of Argentina), Carlos Pirovano, imposes restrictive and regressive measures in all aspects without providing information on a long-term strategic and artistic plan for the organization and the audiovisual industry.”

“No concrete proposals or solutions have been presented to reactivate a sector that has been completely paralyzed since last December,” it added.

The coalition’s members and supporters have been gathering since the Berlin and Malaga festivals to denounce the new government’s drive to axe government spending and rein in the country’s hyper-inflation at the expense of its culture.

“Additionally, the lack of clarity regarding payments owed to ongoing projects seriously jeopardizes the future of production companies, which have lost all economic predictability and are on the brink of bankruptcy, seriously endangering the continuity of the direct and indirect jobs they generate, affecting more than 600,000 families,” it pointed out.

It added that the cancellation of contracts and suspension of overtime payments for INCAA’s staff would hamper the operations of the film school ENERC and the state-run Gaumont Cinema. “There is no way to guarantee the start of classes at ENERC locations in the interior, leaving hundreds of students adrift,” it asserted.

The coalition especially took issue with the last sentence in the Ministry’s communiqué that said: “Our commitment to a 0% deficit is non-negotiable. The years when film festivals were financed at the expense of the hunger of thousands of children are over.”
