Best Shopping in Los Angeles

Jenny Peters

LAST UPDATED BY Jenny Peters July 31, 2022

Los Angeles is a big, sprawling city, with little shops and sexy boutiques on just about every corner. But the sprawl makes choosing the place for a day of shopping a logistic decision; do you want to shop near the beach, in the heart of Beverly Hills or even out in the San Fernando Valley? And the location is only the first criterion needed to plan your day; next, you'll have to choose the sort of shopping experience you're up for. There are gigantic malls (the Beverly Center is a monster, for example), beachfront strolls (don't miss the Venice Beach Boardwalk ) and whole streets devoted to selling you something you actually cannot buy anywhere else on the planet (try Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Melrose Avenue for that sort of thing). But be ready to face the crowds, for shopping is a serious sport in L.A., especially in the incredibly popular spots like the Grove and the Commons at Calabasas . Perhaps that is because of the terrific shops, restaurants and movie theaters found there, but it just might be because famous Hollywood faces are constantly seen strolling around in both of those two shopping meccas (and on Rodeo Drive, naturally).

Westfield Century City Mall

Westfield Century City Mall

Westfield Century City Mall got a massive $1 billion makeover in 2017 and now ranks as one of Southern California's top shopping destinations. The AMC Century City 15 movie theaters are the only thing that remained the same, as this large outdoor mall changed up everything else. Shoppers can find over 200 shops and restaurants. It is anchored by Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's and Macy's and boasts a massive Eataly that combines an Italian specialty food market with three different (and delicious) restaurants. Smaller shops range from the Apple Store to Ted Baker, John Varvatos and Michael Kors. Sample the culinary delights found here at Terra, Din Tai Fung, Javier's and the other restaurants scattered throughout. The mall also has loads of special events and pop-up stores, so make a weekend of it with a stay at the brand-new Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel across the street.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Ramped up into a wonderland of shopping and eating, the Westfield Century City Mall is now among the best in SoCal.

Jenny's expert tip : For the ultimate shopping experience here, book The Private Suite, where VIPs and Hollywood stars hang out in private rooms complete with personal shoppers.

Venice Beach Boardwalk

Venice Beach Boardwalk

There's no other beach scene in Southern California quite like the one you will find on Venice Beach. Starting with the fact that it's the only place that we have a boardwalk right along the sand, where shops are selling everything from beach basics like surfboards, boogie boards, wetsuits, bathing suits, sunscreen and flip flops to hippie jewelry, incense and stoner paraphernalia. Add in the chance to see the famous Muscle Beach outdoor workout area, the running-chainsaw jugglers, the drum-circle bangers and all the gorgeous bikini-clad gals and ripped guys who cycle by on the bike path and there's no question that the Venice Beach Boardwalk is a must-visit L.A. shopping area. Make a fuel stop at On the Waterfront, where they've been serving up Erdinger beer, frozen cocktails, terrific California-style eats and beachfront views of the sand and sun for decades.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Every visitor to SoCal has to hit the Venice Boardwalk once, for it's a unique scene that has to be seen to be believed.

Jenny's expert tip : It is often overcast and slightly gloomy at the beach in the mornings, so schedule your visit to the Venice Beach Boardwalk in the afternoon, when the fog has burned off.

The Commons at Calabasas

The Commons at Calabasas

Like the Grove in the Mid-Wilshire District of L.A., the Commons at Calabasas is another Caruso Affiliated shopping center and it feels very similar. Beautiful gardens and fountains make up the center of the outdoor mall, while Mediterranean-influenced structures housing boutiques, restaurants and the Edwards Grand Plaza stadium-seating multiplex line the perimeter. It's such a pleasant place that people come for the ambiance alone. But there are plenty of well-known stores to shop, of course, from Lululemon and Bonjour Fete to Barnes & Noble, Williams Sonoma Home and Sephora. Plus, this a favorite place for Hollywood types who live in mansions nearby to stop in, so keep your eyes open, as you never know when Kim Kardashian or her clan might wander by.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : The San Fernando Valley's most popular place to shop, to be seen and to spot famous faces (the Kardashians do their shopping here).

Jenny's expert tip : The Commons at Calabasas offers free self-parking in the lots off Calabasas Road and Park Granada.

Santa Monica Place

Santa Monica Place

The old, Frank Gehry designed Santa Monica Place is long gone, replaced with a sleek open-air shopping center anchored by Nordstrom. There are plenty of high-end boutiques (7 For All Mankind, Hugo Boss, Tiffany & Co., etc.) and a varied restaurant scene on the top floor, where views of the ocean pair with crafted cocktails or fine California wines. Park in one of the numerous garages that surround the mall, and make sure to take a walk down the neighboring Third Street Promenade as well, where even more shops, restaurants and some often seriously strange people watching await. And the Santa Monica Pier is just a few steps away, as is the beach and the Pacific Ocean.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Completely transformed into a sleek shopping mall, Santa Monica Place has it all, from major department stores to trendy boutiques and highly rated restaurants.

Jenny's expert tip : Shop in the late afternoon, then go up to the top floor and settle in with a nice glass of wine at The Curious Palate and watch the sunset over the ocean. It's magical!

Melrose Avenue

Melrose Avenue

Start out near the Beverly Center and La Cienega Boulevard and you'll find some of the world's top designers on Melrose Avenue, including Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith as well as Decades consignment shop, where couture brands get a second time around. Continue on towards La Brea Boulevard and the shops change, transforming into funky, edgy boutiques packed with reasonably priced, trendy outfits. So whether you've got a punk sensibility or a more elegant sense of style, there is a retail outlet somewhere on Melrose Avenue that will yield up a treasure. And part of the fun is spending a day meandering along the very-long street (you'll have to drive to see it all), making unique discoveries along the way. Also, be sure to check out Supreme and Dolls Kill a few blocks south of Melrose on Fairfax, where lines form when either clothing shop has a special release on offer.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Always a street where imaginations have run wild, Melrose Avenue is a heady blend of top-dollar boutiques and slightly grungy T-shirt shops.

Jenny's expert tip : Choose your style, for Melrose near La Cienega Boulevard sports very high-end shops, while the further east you go, the edgier and funkier the boutiques get.

Montana Avenue

Montana Avenue

With over 150 high-end shops selling everything from home furnishings to children's clothing, Montana Avenue's shopping district spans over 10 blocks of beautiful places with unique products. Make sure to stop into Moondance Jewelry Gallery or Claude Joaillier for gorgeous jewels and other accessories that every woman will adore, then hit Savannah to find the latest fashions. There's perfume, bath and body goods at Larissa Love, furniture at Lovesac or Nest Bedding and even The Massage Place, where you can get all your kinks worked out. Finish up your Montana experience with a meal at Forma or Father's Office, add in a nibble of French cookies at Le Macaron French Pastries, then head a few more blocks west and watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean with your toes in the sand.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Chic and relaxed at the same time, the Montana Avenue shops in Santa Monica are a beautiful way to get some much-needed retail therapy.

Jenny's expert tip : Find a parking spot at a meter anywhere on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica between 17th and 10th streets and start strolling to find plenty of cool boutiques and restaurants.

Read more about Montana Avenue →

The Grove

Day or night, summer or winter, the Grove always teems with shoppers. It's such a popular place that teens like to hang out there, taking selfies by the animated music fountain in the center of the open-air mall; adults like to hit the diverse shops (from Apple to Lululemon, Michael Kors, Nike and Banana Republic) and the Nordstrom department store; and everyone loves the great food found there, too. Favorites include La Piazza and Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, where you must try the fried chicken with wasabi, it is divine and Alma, the newest hotspot that specializes in elevated Mexican fare. And just a stroll away (or take the kitschy Grove Trolley) is the Original Farmer's Market, where a collection of classic restaurants awaits. Visit The Gumbo Pot there for an authentic taste of New Orleans!

Recommended for Best Shopping because : The Grove truly is the center of shopping in Los Angeles, a place that has been packed with patrons since it first opened in 2002.

Jenny's expert tip : Enter the valet parking on The Grove Drive and avoid the traffic jam that happens in the shopping center's parking structure just about all the time.

Read more about The Grove →

Beverly Center

Beverly Center

With over 100 top shops including Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Saint Laurent and Versace, the Beverly Center has been a Los Angeles shopping fixture since it opened in 1982; it recently had a complete makeover, too. Towering eight stories high, the mall has appeared in numerous films and television shows; it truly is an iconic shopping structure! Bloomingdale's and Macy's are here, too, as well as restaurants that sit mostly on street level. Inside, there's a feeling of spacious grandness and luxury. The best way to experience this huge mall is to go in without an agenda and just stroll; we recommend that especially on a hot day when the cool indoor space just might offer up that perfect item you've been looking for.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : This is the largest indoor shopping center in town, centrally located in the Beverly Hills-West Hollywood neighborhoods, with lots of high-end shopping and dining.

Jenny's expert tip : Park in the structure for $1 per hour, then jump in an elevator to the sixth floor, as that's where the shops begin in this massive structure. The escalators will take you forever!

Abbot Kinney Boulevard Shops

Abbot Kinney Boulevard Shops

Once a sleepy little boulevard that boasted some nice restaurants and a few art galleries, these days Venice's Abbot Kinney is the hottest shopping spot in town. New boutiques seem to open every week, with mainstays including Robert Graham, Marine Layer, Warby Parker, Huset and Timbuk2. So start to stroll at the corner of Venice Boulevard and Abbot Kinney and don't stop until you hit Main Street. The discoveries here are endless. And don't worry, there are plenty of great places to eat, too, including Gjelina, Lemonade, Plant Food + Wine and Felix.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : Abbot Kinney Boulevard has transformed into a sleek, sophisticated shopping mecca, while still retaining that slightly funked-out Venice vibe that makes it a unique destination.

Jenny's expert tip : Park on Electric Avenue, just north of Abbot Kinney, or use the valet at one of the street's many restaurants, as finding a space on Abbot Kinney is almost impossible these days.

Read more about Abbot Kinney Boulevard Shops →

Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive needs no description, as it is certainly the most famous shopping street in the world, thanks to Hollywood. So many movies have filmed scenes here it is too hard to count; but as the ultra-luxe shops come and go, one thing remains the same: this is the Beverly Hills spot where money rules. Bring plenty of it when you enter Tiffany's, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Harry Winston or Cartier to buy jewels; you'll need deep pockets at Chanel, Valentino, Dior or Prada, too. Be sure to stop into Rimowa, where they sell the best rolling luggage on the planet; if you've been busy, you can fill your suitcase with all your purchases and easily roll it all the way home.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : It's Rodeo Drive. Singularly the most famous shopping street in the world, bar none.

Jenny's expert tip : Find metered parking in the lots located between Santa Monica Boulevard and Little Santa Monica; go to the downstairs level of the two-story lots to find the most spaces.

LA Streets Where You Can Walk, Eat, & Shop

LA Streets Where You Can Walk, Eat, & Shop image

December 14, 2023

In case it hasn't been drummed into you enough, LA is a big city where we spend too much time in our cars and stare daggers at anyone daring to walk . Except, not really. Yes, this is a huge city, and yes, car is king, but there are still pockets where you can stroll around for an afternoon—you just have to know where to look. These are LA's best walking streets, iconic stretches where you can hang out for an entire afternoon, get your steps in, do some shopping, and eat great food along the way.

Melrose Ave. is where luxury shopping and neon-branded juul shops share a zip code in harmony. The street is lined with places selling 90’s vintage clothing and expensive sneakers, as well as America’s most iconic comedy theater. And you can walk around for hours without getting bored.

Ghost Sando Shop image

Ghost Sando Shop

You’re going to get a lot of steps in while strolling this one-mile shopping strip, and there’ll inevitably come a point where you need something fast and filling. At Ghost Sando, you can pick up a crunchy, meat-stacked sub. We particularly love the “Melrose” with ham, turkey, bacon, and creamy slaw.

Happy Ice image

Rifling through racks of ironic t-shirts at one store can be exhausting. So imagine how you’ll feel after 16 sunny blocks of that. Cool down at Happy Ice, a rainbow-adorned dessert shop that specializes in water ice (translation: Philadelphia’s name for Italian ice). There are eight different fruit-based flavors, but we like the Rainbow Rocket, which gets you all of them at once.

Ronan image

West Hollywood

No day on Melrose would be complete without a show at The Groundlings, the iconic comedy club where Maya Rudolph, Will Farrell, and Jennifer Coolidge got their starts. For dinner beforehand, go to this casual Italian spot located directly next door. They crank out charred, bubbly-crusted Neapolitan pizza we consider to be among the best in the city . Pizza aside, the giant hunk of burrata with pine nuts is a must.

ABBOT KINNEY

Venice’s most famous street is one of those tourist attractions that locals legitimately use. On it, you’ll find high-end boutiques, coffee shops selling $7 nitro cold brews, and people on electric scooters sniffing out brunch.

Gjelina image

After 10+ years of operating, Gjelina is still one of the city’s best restaurants and our go-to when we want seasonal vegetables prepared in a million different ways. You’ll learn a lot about LA’s food scene after a meal here. Casual California cuisine, our city’s pizza renaissance, relentless kale salad clichés—they can all be traced back to this place. If you’d rather get something quick and casual than have a sit-down meal, go to GTA next door for a slice or a very good meatball sandwich served on a baguette.

Atla image

This all-day Mexican spot is the perfect place to put down your shopping bags, rest your blistered feet, and order a quesadilla and a tequila cocktail at 2pm. Make no mistake, this isn't a chips and marg kind of spot. Atla makes Mexican classics with finesse, like shrimp tacos topped with buttery beans, cheese and potato flautas that shatter like glass, and juicy barbacoa that get scooped into warm handmade tortillas—all in a bright, airy room that's just as chic as the stores selling $400 sunglasses.

Salt & Straw image

Salt & Straw

After shopping for fireplace matches that neither you nor anyone in Los Angeles needs, it’ll be time for a sugar intermission at Salt & Straw. The crowds at this Portland-based ice cream spot can reach Disneyland levels, but stay in line. Everything is incredible and the line moves quickly. Beyond the classics, we suggest getting weird with pear and blue cheese, strawberry honey balsamic with pops of black pepper, or one of the seasonal specials.

Olvera Street is part of the original pueblo of Los Angeles. Which means this city of 3.8 million people began in the area of this small street back in the late 1700s. Today, it’s a hub for Mexican-American culture, where you can see historic landmarks, shop, and eat juicy burritos in cantinas.

Chiguacle Sabor Ancestral image

Chiguacle Sabor Ancestral

Downtown LA

Olvera Street has plenty of forgettable tortilla chips and margs. But if you want to end an afternoon of trinket shopping with a really good, sit-down Mexican meal, head to Chiguacle. This cantina specializes in low-and-slow dishes from southern Mexico, like zingy cochinita pibil and Mayan-style lamb with nopales and smoky dried chilies.

Cielito Lindo image

Cielito Lindo

This historic, ‘30s-era stand is famous for pan-fried taquitos covered in tangy avocado salsa. They’re the perfect snacks to eat on the sidewalk before getting back to ceramic bowl shopping, as well as a nearly century-old symbol of LA's Mexican American community (and just plain old delicious). Skip the refried beans and order the two taquito combo with a spinach and cheese tamale—double the carbs, double the salsa.

Philippe The Original image

Philippe The Original

Philippe’s, another shining example of LA food history, is right down the street from Cielito Lindo. This place claims to be the birthplace of the French dip sandwich. Who knows if that’s true, but we're here to say their version is the best we’ve tried in the city. The Beef Double Dip gets two dunks in salty jus. Layer some spicy mustard on yours at the table.

SUNSET JUNCTION

Someone who lives in Silver Lake (or Brooklyn, frankly) might describe the neighborhood as the eighth wonder of the world. The truth is it’s a hilly neighborhood that smells like Aesop soap, especially if you walk around the shops of Sunset Junction. Consider this an epicenter of chic moms, spoiled children, and many great restaurants.

Intelligentsia image

Intelligentsia

Bakery/Cafe

Silver Lake

This neighborhood has plenty of coffee shops where people rock choppy mullets and work on scripts. Not only is Intelligentsia the most iconic one of the bunch, but they also make very good espresso. Come here to start your day in a sea of vaguely employed locals who woke up and put on designer denim just to show off their shiba inus.

Simón image

While in LA, you should really be eating mariscos . And if you’re already planning on spending time in Silver Lake, prioritize Simón for a two-birds-one-stone kinda thing. The bright blue Mexican food truck sits in front of the Sunset Triangle Plaza and serves seafood tacos that wouldn't be out of place at a fine dining restaurant. So you can sit on a traffic barrier eating an octopus barbacoa taco topped with pineapple salsa. Welcome to paradise, baby.

Rémy Martin

Night + Market Song

Thanks to places like Night + Market, Thai food and biodynamic wine have become one of LA’s power couples. There are three locations across the city, but we like the one in Silver Lake for a casual dinner after an afternoon walking around the neighborhood. You’ll eat some of the best khao soi, panang curry, and party wings in the city while surrounded by bright blue walls, posters of Thai pop stars, and neon signs.

RODEO DRIVE

Thanks to Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills has maintained its reputation as a traffic-clogged vortex of Rolex shoppers. You should at least see the scene to decide if you love it or hate it.

Spago image

Beverly Hills

Want to live the fantasy of a Rodeo Drive regular? Get dinner at Spago. Since opening in the early ‘80s, Wolfgang Puck’s first restaurant has become a legendary piece of LA’s dining history. It’s still a staple for a big night out in Beverly Hills. You’ll eat spicy tuna cones, smoked salmon pizza, and weiner schnitzel in a space that looks like a rich movie star’s estate.

Nate ’n Al Delicatessen image

Nate 'n Al Delicatessen

Before gluing your eyes to clothing you may or may not be able to afford, kick the day off at Nate 'n Al's. A meal at this Jewish deli will let you in on the most authentic version of this iconic city. In addition to being a neighborhood landmark, it’s where moguls, comedians, agents, and actors congregate in big leather booths for business meetings over blintzes and latkes. Prepare for a scene. What’s a day in Beverly Hills without seeing an 85-year-old in Juicy Couture sweats?

The Rooftop Bar at Funke image

The Rooftop Bar at Funke

Nothing screams “Beverly Hills!” like sipping an Aperol spritz on a rooftop after shopping on Rodeo. That’s where Bar Funke comes in. It’s on top of the splashiest Italian restaurant on the Westside (and a short walk from the Beverly Hills sign), but you don’t have to bend over backwards to get a table. All of the seating is first come, first served. Yes, a martini will cost you $25. From hunting for affordable gems in a vintage mecca to brushing shoulders with celebrities in high-end boutiques, there’s a little something for everyone. If you’ve yet to fully investigate the city’s retail situation, let this be your introductory course. Here, in no particular order, are the 10 best spots to shop in town, from a hidden sneakerhead haven in the Arts District to an iconic bookstore where you’re almost certain to find something you never knew you needed.

An email you’ll actually love

1.  Individual Medley

  • Atwater Village
  • price 2 of 4
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Individual Medley (@individualmedleystore) on Sep 5, 2019 at 5:37pm PDT

In search of a gift for someone you know? How about someone you don’t know? No matter, you can find just the right thing—plus something for yourself—at this quintessentially California boutique in low-key, unassuming Atwater Village. Breezy yet pulled together clothing for men and women by a mix of established and emerging brands? Yep, they’re there. Speciality cookbooks and culinary goodies for your foodie friends? Check and check. A curated apothecary section filled with products to satisfy earth mamas and cult beauty fanatics alike? Definitely. Add in housewares, home fragrance, paper goods and hip stuff for the little ones and you’ve pretty much crossed everyone off your list.

2.  Nonna

  • Highland Park
View this post on Instagram A post shared by NONNA (@shop_nonna) on Mar 8, 2016 at 9:48am PST

Discerning women shoppers who are always on the lookout for what’s new and next shouldn’t skip a stop by this off-the-beaten path boutique, just a few blocks away from Highland Park’s most bustling stretch of Figueroa. While the selection may be tight, owner Olivia Perez stocks the shelves with a balanced mix of coveted indie designers plus a few that might just be new to you—but if you found your way here you’re more than likely to love ‘em. And while the list of labels for clothing, jewelry, intimates, home goods and accessories is well-rounded and international (from Alexa Stark to Zepherina) there’s also significant attention paid to local names, like Desiree Klein and Town Clothes.

3.  The Apartment by the Line

  • price 3 of 4
View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Line (@thelinenyc) on Sep 10, 2018 at 4:28pm PDT

At the time of its initial opening, Apartment served as the California counterpart to New York’s now-shuttered The Line. Currently, it stands firmly on its own as an impossibly chic, appointment-only shopping destination that serves as a showroom of sorts for high-end furniture and fixtures, decorative accents and some luxury clothing and accessories by the likes of Brock Collection and NewbarK sprinkled throughout for good measure.

4.  Fred Segal

  • West Hollywood
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fred Segal (@fredsegal) on May 2, 2019 at 4:43pm PDT

Fred Segal has long been a must-stop for out-of-towners who are looking to score some stylish goods (and enjoy a potential celebrity sighting). But when the iconic retailer recently relocated its flagship location to Sunset Boulevard, it became less of a tourist trap and more of a destination for all serious shopping enthusiasts: Its sprawling space boasts two eateries, a Credo Beauty shop-in-shop and men’s, women’s and kids’ apparel and accessories from an impressive list of new and established brands (including the occasional collab or exclusive collection).

5.  Jet Rag

  • Thrift stores
View this post on Instagram A post shared by @jetragvintage on Sep 12, 2016 at 5:53am PDT

Los Angeles is a mecca for great vintage, from the monthly Rose Bowl Flea Market to ultra high-end designer and consignment shops, like Decades. But if you had to make just one shop your stop to roll up your sleeves and hunt for hidden gems among racks and racks of not-so-curated finds, it’s this tried-and-true one. And that’s especially true if you’re the vintage shopper who isn’t about to blow their budget on some quirky secondhand pieces; Jet Rag is not just affordable, its monthly $1 bin sale in the parking lot is the stuff of legends—so long as you’re down to dig deep.

6.  American Rag Cie

View this post on Instagram A post shared by AMERICAN RAG CIE (@americanragcie) on Dec 13, 2018 at 3:14pm PST

Americian Rag is a go-to spot for anyone looking to find some fashion-forward brands or learn about a few up-and-coming ones. But the real bread-and-butter here is the denim selection. Shopping for jeans that suit your shape and style can be one of the most frustrating experiences, but considering this well-respected retailer offers a wide selection that ranges from forever classics (Levi’s) to more specialty ones (Mother, Naked & Famous), you’re more than likely to find a pair that’s practically perfect.

7.  Bodega

Downtown arts district.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bodega (@bodega) on Jun 18, 2019 at 7:03pm PDT

Hidden from plain sight, this sneakerhead heaven—located in DTLA’s conceptual shopping complex ROW—is disguised as the entrance to a produce-filled warehouse space (a clever nod to the building’s origin). Inside, Bodega is no less creative, with an actual bodega art installation filled with shaving cream and detergent bottles. But let’s face it: You’re here for hard-to-find footwear styles, special brand spotlights and the selection of streetwear-meets-luxury clothing and accessories on the second floor.

8.  Alchemy Works

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alchemy Works, Los Angeles (@alchemyworks) on Sep 12, 2019 at 6:27pm PDT

In the heart of the rapidly evolving Arts District, this concept shop (part gallery, part boutique) is the perfect place for aspirational browsing, considering the decidedly pricey finds for women’s clothing and jewelry, housewares, bags and shoes by a roster of impressive—often indie—labels. But that doesn’t mean there’s not something for everyone to be found here, even if you’re on a budget. Actually, this location boasts a Warby Parker annex where you can browse the affordable eyewear line IRL.

9.  The Last Bookstore

  • Downtown Historic Core
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Last Bookstore (@lastbookstorela) on Mar 3, 2019 at 2:08pm PST

There’s no shortage of fantastic bookstores in the city, but DTLA’s iconic The Last Bookstore floats to the top of the list in no small part due to its unique space: sculptural installations of books make for perfect photo ops and nooks and crannies to explore, an old bank vault holds rare finds for crime and mystery. But it’s not just looks: The airy, two-level shop is filled with a wide variety of new and used books (and records) that also happen to be super affordable. Pro tip: You’ll have better luck if you go without something specific in mind.

10.  Amoeba Music

  • Music venues
  • price 1 of 4
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Amoeba Hollywood (@amoebahollywood) on Aug 10, 2019 at 6:15pm PDT

For music lovers, this sprawling record and video store doesn’t really ever go out of style—even if it’s always buzzing with out-of-town visitors. Selection-wise it’s still your best bet for finding rare vinyl (as well as, of course, all the current stuff). Catching a show here is a quintessentially L.A. thing everyone ought to do once, and while you’re there don’t forget to rifle through the dollar bin.

Berries for sale at the Original Farmers Market

Highlights: Open-air market offering fresh produce and local goods every day of the week

The Los Angeles Farmers Market first started in 1934 as a very modest affair that sprung from the hardships created by the Great Depression. At the height of the economic depression, eighteen farmers came together and set up stalls on a piece of open land near Wilshire Boulevard in order to sell their produce direct to the consumer.

This experiment was so successful that the market continued to expand. At that time, it truly was a fruit and vegetable market, but over the years the market has grown to accommodate more and more vendors. Today, the market hosts vegetable and other food stands, as well as restaurants and specialty shops. You can find everything from jewelry and candles to kitchenware and toys.

If you are looking for things to do at night in Los Angeles, the market hosts a variety of entertainment, including free evening concerts on Friday nights in summer.

Page Museum and La Brea Tar Pits

Highlights: Indoor and outdoor exhibits detailing the incredible natural history of the area

In Hancock Park, La Brea Tar Pits offers a unique opportunity to see live excavations of fossils and learn about the process. The Tar Pits were formed 40,000 years ago, when oil seeped through the rock, entrapping passing animals, which would get stuck in the substance. The tar then preserved the fossils throughout the ages, leaving behind an incredible glimpse into another age.

The museum at la Brea Tar Pits (formerly the George C. Page Museum) shows reconstructed fossils of prehistoric animals found at the site, as well as the process of fossil recovery. You can see bones being worked on and learn what takes place behind the scenes, before skeletons are able to be displayed.

The museum displays fully reconstructed fossils of a variety of mammals including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and others, all dating from between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago. An outdoor area displays replicas of extinct animals.

Plans are in the works for a renovation and new design. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is reviewing plans from architecture teams in the hopes of reinventing this unique attraction.

Lanterns in Little Tokyo

Highlights: Japanese restaurants, historic fire tower, wishing tree, gardens

Los Angeles is home to one of just three remaining Japantowns in the United States: Little Tokyo. The petite neighborhood packs tons of culture, cuisine, and color into about five city blocks.

The Japanese Village Plaza is considered the central gathering place. Lit by red and white paper lanterns, this pedestrian-only plaza feels like it was plucked from Tokyo and dropped into Downtown Los Angeles. Check out the Yagura Tower at the First Street entrance—this replica of a rural Japanese fire tower has been greeting visitors for nearly 50 years.

In addition to popular shops, like Nijiya grocery store and the Sanrio Hello Kitty boutique , another major attraction is the wishing tree . People from around the world jot down their hopes and dreams on colorful paper strips, then hang them from the tree's branches in hopes that they'll come to fruition. Reading the notes is deeply touching.

Come hungry—Little Tokyo has some of the best Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles. Slurp ramen noodles at Hachioji , fill up on okonomiyaki (a Hiroshima speciality!) at Chinchikurin , and satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh mochi from the 120-year-old Fugetsu-Do Bakery Shop .

Los Angeles notoriously enjoys warm weather throughout the year. However, the best seasons to visit are the "shoulder seasons," including spring (March, April, May) and fall (September, October, and November). The air is easier to breathe this time of year, and the streets are less crowded with tourists.

June, July, and August are still some of the most popular times to visit Lost Angeles. And for good reason. The hot weather beckons for the beach and the late evenings extend a day of exploring. Expect to pay the highest rates for things like lodging and transportation this time of year.

The winter months, including December, January, and February, are suitable months to visit. Expect slightly colder temperatures that keep most people away from the beach. But, with average daytime temperatures still in the 60s Fahrenheit, it's often a welcomed warm escape from other parts of the country.

We’ll help you discover coveted treasures and experiences that will serve as lasting memories of your trip, including:

Beverly Hills

Is there a more famous luxury shopping district in the world? Beverly Hills is best known for its grande dame of shopping streets, Rodeo Drive. You’ll find boutiques from Louis Vuitton, Hermès and all the usual luxe suspects. Have your personal concierge (at Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills ) arrange your private shopping trip to take advantage of the hidden entrances, free-flowing Champagne, open-air terraces, and private salons and lounges, only available to their VIP guests.

The outdoor shopping plaza Two Rodeo is another Instagram-worthy backdrop for browsing, raised above the bustling avenues below. Nearby Beverly Drive and Brighton Way — a top stop for men’s fashion, with names like Isaia and Eleventy — also offer a range of contemporary shops and VIP experiences, all amid manicured streets and lively dining outlets.

The glittering Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills makes for ideal accommodations after a day of Chanel-ing around 90210. Book The Private Retreat package to elevate your stay in true Beverly Hills fashion, which includes (among other luxuries) complimentary access to The Private Suite at Westfield Century City, an outdoor LA shopping mall. The shopping doesn’t have to stop once you’re on-property. Plan for a visit to the House of Bijan: the exclusive menswear brand’s second location is housed within Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills.

Expansive rooms and suites at this coveted property feature floor-to-ceiling windows and top-end technology. Plus, three-Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten is the force behind the food here. His signature restaurant offers 360-degree city views from the open-air terrace.

After dinner, rest those tired shopping legs in the heated rooftop pool, or even indulge in a treatment at the sumptuous spa by La Prairie. If you need anything, your personal concierge is just a text away, 24 hours a day.

Downtown Los Angeles

The two-decades-long renaissance of downtown LA has transformed the once business-focused district into one of the most exuberant places in LA to shop, sip and see shows. In such enclaves as the Arts District and the Historic Core around Spring Street, score one-of-a-kind pieces from unique galleries and shops with distinct points of view, like DRKRM, Esentialle or The Last Bookstore.

The city-block-long Bloc connects the financial, fashion, jewelry and theater districts. And you’ll find tons of shops as well as dining and entertainment at the open-air FIGat7th. Throughout the area are pockets to nab special pieces from communities that make up the city’s melting pot, too. Custom hats from Gladys Tamez Millinery? Yes, please.

You’ll make your visit to downtown LA perfect in 2022 with a stay at the new Conrad Los Angeles. The hotel will be part of the Frank Gehry-designed The Grand LA development. Set to open in March 2022, the 28-story hotel will include 305 modern guest rooms with an elevated indoor-outdoor lobby.

From this posh pied-à-terre, you’ll have sweeping views of the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall, plus a huge rooftop terrace complete with a private pool deck overlooking downtown. Restaurants, lounges and alfresco spaces here embrace the city’s outdoor culture, and the whole property will come LEED-certified, catering to cyclists, pedestrians and those prioritizing a stay with minimal environmental impact.

Melrose Avenue

Melrose Avenue begins at Santa Monica Boulevard, where the cities of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood meet. This legendary avenue is famous for its independent spirit, and its over 300 shops reflect that vibe. You’ll spot luxurious boutiques from the likes of Vivienne Westwood to the whimsical housewares and accessories of Jonathan Adler, plus high-end vintage shops like Decades and Wasteland.

Nearby streets like West 3rd and Beverly Boulevard offer numerous options for shoppers exploring on foot. Mall lovers will enjoy a spin through the nearby Beverly Center and the open-air shopping center The Grove, known for its famous central fountain and kid-friendly trolley rides (plus a good chance of a celeb sighting).

Shopped 'till you dropped? Explore the museums in the nearby Miracle Mile district, or take a load off at one of the many world-class restaurants within walking distance.

Venice Beach and Santa Monica

The coastal stretch from Venice to Santa Monica has its must-stop shops. Venice remains true to its reputation as a funky, individualistic destination, offering unique apparel and homeware stores in keeping with its famous flair. Abbot Kinney Blvd is widely known as the “Coolest Block in America,” and shops like Burro, Sofia Kaman and Sweaty Betty make it so.

Further north is Santa Monica’s popular alfresco shopping street, the 3rd Street Promenade. You’ll also find the recently overhauled Santa Monica Place shopping mall, an open-air destination featuring Nordstrom, Louis Vuitton and many more. Both spots are just steps from the beach, the five-star dining on Montana Avenue, and the Santa Monica Pier’s dazzling Ferris wheel. If you have the family in tow, Santa Monica makes for an all-in-one destination.

Tucked into a residential enclave on the Palisades Bluffs, the intimate, 70-room Oceana Santa Monica, LXR Hotels & Resorts makes a dreamy destination for your shopping-focused trip to town. Imagine the coveted property as your own, with its ivy-covered facade and living room-like lobby.

The beachy vibe pervades the design, done in soothing color palettes, with sparkling gold metal accents, bold geometric patterns and wooden finishes. Lush foliage and ocean views abound here, and the veranda is the perfect place to take them in amid outdoor dining or sunbathing. After a day of shopping, collapse onto an oversized daybed around the pool with olive trees dotting your view.

No matter your style, Los Angeles is the perfect destination for a shopping vacation. From funky finds by the beach to heirloom handbags on Rodeo Drive, you’ll find scores that will always remind you of cherished travel memories.

Everything You Should Know About Shopping In LA

tourist shops la

It seems everywhere you turn in Los Angeles there are shops, flea markets, malls, and entire streets dedicated to luring the consumer in to spend a few of their hard-earned dollars. This large bustling city is the perfect place to lose yourself when shopping.

With the weather being sunny and simply fantastic most of the time, spending an afternoon strolling through a shopping district or hanging out in an open-air mall would be the perfect day, especially for shopaholics who flock to L.A.'s shopping destinations.

When you think about shopping in Los Angeles, many will probably envision the iconic scenes in Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts’ character learning the ins and outs of L.A. shopping and strolling down the famous shopping street, Rodeo Drive , with Richard Gere. But no one wants to go shopping when they have to drag their suitcases with them. Leave your bags at one of the many locations for luggage storage in Los Angeles before you hit the stores.

Shopping in Los Angeles is one of the ultimate experiences whether you live in the city, suburbs, or are just visiting for a few days (for where to stay in LA , see our guide to the best locations). Check out some of the most popular malls, lesser-known gems, and amazing vintage finds in Los Angeles.

Popular Shopping Malls in Los Angeles

Beverly center.

One of the biggest and possibly best shopping malls in Los Angeles is the Beverly Center with over 100 different stores ranging from home goods to electronics to haute couture. You will be able to find exactly what you are searching for here.

This mall is right in the heart of downtown Los Angeles and offers extensive shopping opportunities, a kiddie playland, and an amazing food court. Stop by the Concierge Desk for coupons and offers from several of the retailers.

Many visitors have referred to The Grove as a theme park for grown-ups. This trendy, vibrant shopping mall has breathtaking water features and quite a few celebrities have even been spotted browsing the stores and munching goodies from the food court.

This open-air mall has great flow and allows shoppers to soak up some sun while taking part in some much-needed retail therapy. The central fountain will help soothe your soul and gives a relaxing vibe for shoppers. Designer boutiques are dotted throughout this shopping center.

Kick back and enjoy the latest thriller or rom-com at the movie theater when you need a break from searching for great bargains. There are several eateries at The Grove that are not your typical mall fare, so you can enjoy a gourmet meal after working up an appetite.

Westfield Topanga

This giant mall will take you all day to fully explore. While it does lack some of the more charming boutiques, Westfield Topanga does have several typical chain stores where you can quickly find what you need and some pretty great bargains.

This mall has a rather eclectic mix of high-end stores and everyday essentials. You can pick up a new toothbrush at Target and then head to Neiman Marcus for a new outfit for your hot date Saturday night. There are a few specialty shops located here as well, but not many.

Stop by one of the coffee shops and refuel while you are combing the mall for great finds and then grab brunch (see our fabulous guide to the best LA brunch spots here) or dinner at one of the delicious eateries. If you drive to the mall, park outside the main entrance where it is free instead of in the garage.

The Row DTLA

If you are looking for a unique shopping experience in Los Angeles, head to The Row DTLA with its rather diverse group of shops and stores. This is a newer mall filled with big box stores, adorable boutiques, and vintage oddities.

People who are not afraid to dive in and search for fantastic bargains will love coming here. Grab a pastry and a coffee before hitting the stores and when you need a break, grab a bite to eat at the food court and relax until you get your second wind.

A great feature at The Row DTLA is Market Market, open every other Saturday, where you can find fantastic handcrafted jewelry, artwork, accessories, home furnishings, homemade baked goods, and so much more.

Sherman Oaks Galleria

While Sherman Oaks Galleria is not necessarily the trendiest shopping mall in Los Angeles, it is a great place to drop in and grab a few things or meet up with friends for a few hours of window shopping and catching up with each other.

Catch a movie at the Arclight Theatre; you can even reserve your seat in advance. Then drop by the Cheesecake Factory and enjoy indoor or outdoor dining. Dining al fresco is very pleasant in Los Angeles.  There is even a newer Apple Store for those looking for the newest technology.

Designer Stores and Outlets in Los Angeles

Citadel outlets.

There are plenty of people who come to Los Angeles just to check out Citadel Outlets where they can save so much cash and walk away with name-brand items from BOSS, Armani, Zwilling Henckel, Prada, Gucci, L’Occitane, Coach, Nike, Louis Vuitton and so many more.

Located only 35 minutes from LAX and 10 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, you can expect to spend the entire day browsing through over 130 different name-brand stores. Fashionistas on a budget will love the Citadel Outlets.

This is an upscale outlet mall; therefore, the traditional food court will not be found. Instead, there are upscale dining establishments with a few moderately priced eateries sprinkled in for good measure. Spend a few hours shopping and then enjoy a delicious respite before heading home.

Santa Monica Outlet

Located outside Los Angeles proper, the Santa Monica Outlet is not a mall per se; instead, it is one rather large store that is home to several designers and brands. When you walk in, you may feel a bit of sensory overload, but pace yourself and enjoy the experience.

With everything deeply discounted, up to 75%, you will find fantastic gifts for loved ones, amazing deals to update your wardrobe, and maybe just a few things that you have been longing for but did not need. Be sure to check out the sales racks in front.

The Runway Sample Sale Boutique

Okay, so not technically an outlet, but The Runway Sample Sale Boutique is very similar and is a terrific place to find amazing deals on the latest fashions in women’s clothing. There are even great finds for men at this upscale shopping boutique.

Most of the clothing is from LA designers but they are the latest fashions and are deeply discounted to fit into even the tightest budget. This great boutique is one of the hidden gems of the LA shopping scene.

While many of the shop's featured pieces were worn during fashion events, the clothing is freshly laundered and ready to wear. The sales associates will help you find the perfect outfit for any occasion and make sure you look fabulous for your big event.

Macy’s Plaza

With over 266,000 square feet of optimal shopping in downtown LA, Macy’s Plaza is Los Angeles’ flagship store and is your one-stop shop when updating your wardrobe or giving your home a facelift. The home accessories are trendy and will update to look of any room in your home.

Check out the cosmetics counter for the latest in skincare or to try out a new concealer, their beauty experts are on hand to help you make the best choices for your skin. Then head over and check out the latest fashion trends and possibly update your wardrobe with a few accessories.

Abbot Kinney Sunday Bazaar

Also known as the Abbot Kinney Flea Market, this interesting bazaar is open Saturday and Sunday in Venice on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Since this is an outdoor flea market, it does close on the rare occasions it is raining.

The first Friday of every month, the flea market opens from 5:30 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. with many of the stores and shops along the street stay open to lure buyers in for great deals on their wares. Food trucks even converge on the scene so there is plenty to eat and drink while you browse through the market If you want to explore LA's wide variety of amazing food trucks, check out our guide to LA's street food to find out more.

Special events and even great street performers can be found along Abbot Kinney Boulevard when the market is in full swing. There is even a children's play area available - perfect for families looking for things to do with the kids in Los Angeles .

Melrose Place

Centered on the iconic Melrose Avenue, Melrose Place is not just a television show, it is a stylish and trendy shopping area in Los Angeles. Visitors to the city always want to take a stroll down Melrose Avenue and check out the different shops.

A variety of Hollywood homes tours provide ample opportunities to spot homes owned by the rich and famous. You probably won't see the celebs themselves, but you can snap pics of the homes affiliated with A-listers like Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise, Bruno Mars and Halle Berry. Also, expect to see facades that once housed the likes of Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Along with the stars' abodes, buses usually make stops at the Hollywood Walk of Fame , the Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive .

Some recent travelers were disappointed because many homes are at the end of long driveways or behind hedges. Be sure to check the weather for the day: Extreme heat or a sudden shower can put a damper on an open-top bus ride.

If your kids go crazy for dinosaurs – and really, what kid doesn't? – then a visit to La Brea Tar Pits is sure to be the highlight of their trip. And from the gooiest part of LA, more than 3.5 million fossils have been discovered. The adjoining museum houses many of the artifacts found at the tar pits; consequently, it is home to one of the largest collections of Ice Age fossils in the world. Greystone Mansion and Park Greystone Mansion and Park free

Greystone Mansion is one of the largest mansions in Beverly Hills and an important landmark for American cinema. The nearly 13-acre parcel of land was a wedding gift from oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny to his son, Ned, in 1926. Construction on the mansion began in 1927 and took almost three years to complete. Greystone now represents a golden age in American cinema. Many films, including "The Big Lebowski" and "Ghostbusters," and television shows like "General Hospital" and "Gilmore Girls" have been shot on these gothic-inspired grounds.

Visitors can walk around the property and self-guided tours of the inside of the mansion are offered monthly. Many visitors say Greystone Mansion has stunning grounds with picturesque views. Travelers describe the park grounds as spectacular and enjoy learning which of their favorite movies and shows used Greystone as a backdrop.

Developed in the early 20th century, Venice Beach is modeled – canals and all – after its  namesake city in Italy . Admittedly, the experiment didn't live up to its Italian inspiration, but the neighborhood has become distinctly Californian, embodying the spirit of the wealthy, the alternative and the just plain bizarre. 4 breezy L.A. hikes to beat the heat wave

• Show more sharing options

It’s here. The first inevitable heat wave of the year has arrived in California after a cool and wet winter and spring. While the worst of it may be over for now, it could also mark the beginning of a long, hot summer , according to forecasters.

That doesn’t mean abandoning all outdoor activities that don’t involve a pool or the ocean. Summer has never been my favorite time of year to hike, but I don’t completely give up on the trails. There’s something refreshing about escaping the sun under the wide, welcoming canopies of oaks and sycamores and listening to the rush (OK, maybe trickle) of water flowing.

You are reading The Wild newsletter

Sign up to get expert tips on the best of Southern California's beaches, trails, parks, deserts, forests and mountains in your inbox every Thursday

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

Summer also makes it easier to indulge in a hike after work or to tackle longer treks since there’s ample time to get back to the trailhead before dark.

Two of my favorite hot-weather hikes — Monrovia Canyon Falls and Sturtevant Falls in Big Santa Anita Canyon — are closed indefinitely, due to ongoing repairs and recovery from wildfire and mudslide-related damage. Fortunately, I have found some worthy substitutes that offer pleasant, if not absolute, respites from the summer heat — especially if you start early and bring plenty of water.

Pro tip: Freeze your water bottles or fill them with ice before you head out. You’ll be rewarded mid-hike with an ice-cold drink at the time you could use it most.

Oak Canyon Nature Center in Anaheim Hills has a year-round stream and oak-lined trails.

Oak Canyon Nature Center, Anaheim Hills It’s hard to truly appreciate the quiet beauty of Oak Canyon until you drive through the housing tracts and office parks that surround it. It’s a 58-acre park with a year-round stream and four miles of trails surrounded by thick oak woodland and coastal sage scrub. Detailed trail maps are available at the small nature center, but it’s also easy to choose your own path by following the main road and spinning off the many spur trails from there. If it’s not too hot, it’s worth checking out the upper trails (Bluebird and Roadrunner) as well as the creekside ones. They’re more exposed to the sun, but their hillsides are ablaze right now with multihued wildflowers.

A hidden staircase winds through Mt. Washington a woody area, left, and city and mountain views from a hiking trail.

Jack Smith Trail, Mount Washington Residents of Mount Washington used to honor the late great Times columnist Jack Smith with a four-mile walk around his longtime neighborhood. The event went away years ago, but I still love this year-round urban hike. Much of the path is shaded by old, graceful trees that are as interesting to observe as the charming historic houses along the route. I always try to make time to stop by the Self-Realization Fellowship headquarters (closed Mondays and holidays) just off San Rafael Avenue. Even on a hot day, its lush grounds are welcoming and peaceful.

A creek and huge oaks line Marshall Canyon Trail.

Marshall Canyon Trail, La Verne I usually park at Oak Mesa Park , walk to its southeastern corner and pick up this trail at Orangewood Street. Head north and you’ll soon leave behind the dense residential area and find yourself walking beside a creek embraced by a forest of tentacled oak trees. The trail remains mostly shaded between here and Esperanza Drive before becoming more exposed in the upper portion, where it gains elevation and loops around to connect with Claremont Wilderness Park. Marshall Canyon is also popular with mountain bikers, but the trails are wide in most places and everyone seems to get along and follow trail etiquette.

Ocean Trails Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes

Ocean Trails Reserve, Palos Verdes Last week, the offshore marine layer (a.k.a. June gloom ) lingered on the Palos Verdes Peninsula until well past noon, and it felt as if I were hiking in air conditioning even while temperatures inland soared. The rest of the year, ocean breezes do a pretty good job of keeping the trails here cool despite their lack of shade. Another plus: Several spur trails switchback down to the ocean from the main trail, allowing you to at least dip your toes in the water (tides permitting) before heading back. Park in the free lot at Rotunda Drive and follow the paved Lakeview Trail toward the ocean. The Catalina Trail is closed indefinitely south of Lakeview, but the northern Catalina trail is open and leads to a great walking beach with tidepools. Dogs are allowed on the trails but not the beaches.
