The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, once hosted Stephen King and inspired him to write The Shining . But one of the book (and film’s) most memorable hotel scenes—murderous, ax-brandishing Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) stalking his son Danny (Dan Lloyd) through a sprawling hedge maze—never could have happened at The Stanley. That’s because—Surprise! It never had a maze! Also, in the book, said scene was in a lawn of hedge animals. But never you mind—the collective memory of the movie’s crux has had quite an impact on The Stanley.

Since the book’s 1977 release (and subsequent 1980 movie—shot at the Timberline Hotel in Oregon), the Stanley’s staff has had to explain to quizzical guests (for whom the film is available on a constant loop in their rooms) that there’s no maze. But they have finally decided to do something about it: build one. Why now? According to the Stanley’s owner John Cullen, the maze will commemorate the upcoming 20th anniversary of his ownership.

The design won’t be exactly like the film though—it was decided by a contest, based on aesthetics, functionality and feasibility. Out of 329 total entries from 33 countries and 40 states, they chose one by New York-based architect Mairim Dallaryan Standing. The maze will be constructed by May 2015, in time for the hotel’s horror movie film festival.

Labyrinth expert John W. Rhodes, Ph.D. said that mazes are growing in popularity but there’s a little confusion about their purpose. “A maze is designed for you to lose yourself and a labyrinth is designed for you to find yourself,” he said. In modern usage, ‘maze’ and ‘labyrinth’ have swapped meanings, a labyrinth having a single path for walking meditation, a place to calm the mind, and a maze being a place in which to get lost, to revel in the chaos.

Designer Dallaryan Standing was keenly aware of the difference between a labyrinth and a maze. It was a labyrinth in the movie, but the contest called for a maze. “I was trying not to mimic the labyrinth in the movie, which is funny,” she said. Either way, taking on an outdoor maze can be a fun way to exercise both mind and body.

Davis Mega Mystery Maze

Sterling, Massachusetts The Davis Mega Maze stretches over eight acres of corn at Davis Family Farm in central Massachusetts, containing approximately three miles of paths. Redesigned every year by a renowned maze architect, it has its own zip line, over 200-feet long and 3 stories high, which flings you at 21 mph over the maze.

Dole Plantation Pineapple Maze

Wahiawa, Hawaii In 2008, the Dole Plantation Pineapple Maze was dubbed the largest on earth at over three acres and two-and-a-half miles of paths. Its hedges are built with 14,000 Hawaiian plants. At the center is a giant garden in the shape of a pineapple. Those who finish fastest win a prize, and are immortalized on a sign at the maze’s entrance.

Cool Patch Pumpkins

Dixon, California This enormous, hand-cut corn maze about an hour outside of San Francisco covers 60 acres, and according to Guinness, is the largest temporary corn maze in the world. It changes each season to outwit its guests.

Cherry Crest Farm Maize Maze

Ronks, Pennsylvania About an hour and a half from Philly or two and a half hours from NYC, this five-acre corn maze unfolds over 2.5 miles of paths, with scenic bridges and clues to get you back on track. It takes about an hour to complete, and you’ll be given a gameboard and instructions to help you on your way. You can choose three difficulties that will get you through the maze in either 20 minutes, 45 minutes, or up to two hours.

The Great Vermont Corn Maze

Danville, Vermont You’ll need four-wheel drive to reach this corn maze just outside of White Mountain National Forest . Its three miles of trails with 10-12-foot walls are spread out on over ten acres on a hill, which makes for great views but also a workout. Management urges discretion, and asks guests to bring water, anticipate spending two to five hours lost, and if not healthy adults, have supervision.

After 3 Tourists Go Missing, Bodies Are Found in Baja California

Mexican authorities recovered the three bodies as a search went on for two Australian tourists and a U.S. citizen who disappeared while on vacation.

A dayslong search for three missing tourists who disappeared near a surfing town close to the U.S.-Mexico border ended tragically on Friday as the authorities said that they had located three bodies in a water hole.

Two Australian brothers, Callum and Jake Robinson, and their friend, Jack Carter Rhoad, a U.S. citizen, had been on vacation surfing and camping along the coast near the Mexican city of Ensenada when they disappeared on Saturday.

Debra Robinson, the mother of the brothers, said in a social media post on Wednesday that they had booked an Airbnb in another coastal town north of Ensenada but never showed up there.

“Reaching out to anyone who has seen my two sons. They have not contacted us,” she pleaded to the more than 120,000 members of a community Facebook page created for people interested in touring Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.

She added that Callum was a Type 1 diabetic.

The state’s attorney general, María Elena Andrade Ramírez, said in a news conference on Thursday that prosecutors were investigating three people related to the case but that crucial time had passed since the disappearance of the three men.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the last few days that they were reported missing,” Ms. Andrade Ramírez told reporters. “So, that meant that important hours or time was lost.”

In an interview, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said that after close examination of a 50-foot-deep water hole in La Bocana beach, near the town of Santo Tomás, Mexican authorities found three male bodies early on Friday. The already decomposed remains, she added, “meet the characteristics to assume with a high degree of probability” that they are the Robinson siblings and Mr. Rhoad.

Researchers will perform DNA tests to confirm the findings.

Prosecutors also believe that the three people tied to the deaths tried to seize the victims’ vehicle. When they resisted, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said, one man took out a gun, opened fire and then tried to dispose of their bodies. That person has been arrested.

“This aggression seems to have occurred in an unforeseen, circumstantial manner,” she added. “We pledge that this crime will not go unpunished.”

Human remains of a fourth male body, which has not yet been identified and is not connected to this case, was also found at the same site.

In 2022, 192 American citizens died in Mexico, State Department figures show , but most of those deaths were accidents or suicides. Only 46 were ruled as homicides.

The big waves in Baja California have long attracted throngs of surfers and travelers, many of whom have dealt with rising crime rates for nearly two decades.

But record levels of violence have hit the state in recent years. Government data shows that Baja California currently holds first place in vehicle theft and second place in homicides, most of which are related to drug dealing or organized crime, Mexico’s secretary of defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, said this year.

An official familiar with the investigation, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said a white pickup truck that the missing tourists had been traveling in was found charred near La Bocana beach. Other belongings and pieces of evidence were also being analyzed, the official added.

The swift effort to find the tourists was a rare exception in a country where nearly 100,000 people remain missing, according to the latest count provided by Mexican officials in March.

A majority of cases remain unsolved. Family members and volunteers are left on their own to follow up on leads, but the presence of cartels and a lack of support from the authorities make searching a dangerous mission .

The recent case in Ensenada recalled an episode in 2015 in which two Australian surfers, Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, were killed as they drove across Sinaloa, another state in northern Mexico. Local authorities arrested three people who said they shot the two friends after they resisted a robbery. Their bodies were found inside their van, which had been doused in gasoline and set on fire.

The new properties that will continue to redefine the region as a luxury destination include Almare, a Luxury Collection All-Inclusive Resort (opening in late 2024, with residences to follow), The St. Regis, Costa Mujeres, Resort & Residences (opening in December 2025), the JW Marriott All-Inclusive Costa Mujeres Resort & Residences (opening in 2026), and W All-Inclusive Costa Mujeres, Resort & Residences (opening in 2026).

How Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Are Celebrating Son Prince Archie's 5th Birthday

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have big travel plans this week, but first, they have a birthday boy to celebrate

Meghan Markle  and  Prince Harry have a 5-year-old son!

Prince Archie turned 5 on May 6, and PEOPLE understands the family is celebrating his birthday privately before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's upcoming travel plans. Prince Harry, 39, is heading to the U.K. this week for the celebrations surrounding the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, and Meghan, 42, is set to reunite with her husband later in the week for a visit to Nigeria also spotlighting the sporting competition for veterans and service personnel.

Archie's fifth birthday coincides with the first anniversary of his grandfather King Charles ' coronation. Prince Harry attended his father's crowning ceremony last year, heading to the airport shortly after the event to fly back to California for his son's birthday festivities. Meghan missed the coronation , staying in the U.S., where they moved in 2020 after stepping back as working members of the royal family, with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet , now 2.

A source told PEOPLE ahead of Archie's fourth birthday that a "low-key" party was planned at the family's home.

"They'll have friends around them and Meghan's mom, Doria [Ragland]. Meghan will definitely have support that weekend," the source said.

Little sister Lilibet was also set to be part of the festivities. "They are so sweet together. Archie loves Lili. He's such a sweet boy. When she's not around, he asks, 'Where's Lili?' " the source added.

After being born in the U.K., Archie celebrated his first birthday in the U.S. in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. To celebrate the milestone, his parents shared a  sweet video  of their son reading the picture book  Duck! Rabbit!  on Meghan's lap. The clip was shared in partnership with Save the Children's #SaveWithStories campaign, launched to help kids adversely impacted by the pandemic.

"They are celebrating as a family focused on Archie and being together," a source told PEOPLE at the time. "They'll have a smash cake and Zooms with family and friends. It's been beautiful weather, so perhaps a family stroll with the dogs."

Fans also got a  glimpse of the festivities  in the 2022 Netflix documentary  Harry & Meghan , which showed Meghan's mother  Doria Ragland  in attendance and Archie wearing a yellow party hat.

For Archie's  second birthday  in 2021, Meghan and Harry shared a  new photo  of him holding balloons on the website of the Archewell Foundation. The couple asked for donations to COVID-19 vaccine equity for vulnerable families around the world.

"We cannot think of a more resonant way to honor our son's birthday," the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a message. "If we all show up, with compassion for those we both know and don't know, we can have a profound impact. Even a small contribution can have a ripple effect. Together, we can uplift, protect and care for one another."

While Prince Harry and Meghan didn't share any new updates for Archie's third birthday, he received well wishes on social media from the royal family .

Prince Harry gave a brief update on his children during a visit to Canada earlier this year, where he and Meghan checked out the Invictus Games' Winter Training Camp ahead of the 2025 event in Whistler and Vancouver.

When asked what he's like as a dad in an interview for Good Morning America , the Duke of Sussex replied, "I can't tell you. That's classified. It's top secret!"

"No, the kids are doing great," Harry added. "The kids are growing up like all kids do, very, very fast. They've both got an incredible sense of humor and make us laugh and keep us grounded every single day, like most kids do. I'm just grateful to be a dad."
