Eugene Levy Shares Place That Had a Profound Impact on Him in New Travel Series — and Why He Didn't Want to Go

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor opened up about one of his favorite trips shown in the new Apple TV+ docuseries The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy

Eugene Levy is officially making his return to TV!

In his new Apple TV+ docuseries, The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy , premiering on Friday, Feb. 24, Levy, 76, steps outside of his comfort zone to experience the food and culture of eight unique travel destinations. From underwater sound baths in the Maldives to a snowy treehouse escape in Finland, viewers can live vicariously through Levy's incredible experiences in the new show.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the Schitt's Creek alum recalls how his trip to Kruger National Park in South Africa, specifically during the safari ride, "was definitely the most impactful," even though he wasn't initially eager to go.

"It never really tickled me because I know what all the animals look like. It's not going to be that exciting for me to see them up close," he tells PEOPLE. "But I found out the danger that many of these animals are in every single day from poachers and hunters. It actually really got to me."

Levy adds that he was always aware of the poaching crisis in South Africa, but it didn't fully sink in until he saw the animals for himself.

"I got to go to a rhino conservation park where they take in orphaned and injured rhinos from poaching," he remembers. "I got to feed them, and I found out just how close to extinction these things are from people trying to make money off their horns. It's really terrible."

In addition to his eye-opening time with the animals, Levy's unique lodging experience was another reason why the trip "one of his favorites."

"The hotel was actually a train stationed permanently on top of a bridge over a river," the actor explains. "So when I looked out every day, I could look down over the river in the marsh and I would see these animals. And I actually loved it, it was like my own backyard in a way."

Another enjoyable part of filming the show was having his daughter and Schitt's Creek co-star Sarah Levy , along with his wife Deborah Divine, accompany him on some of his travels. Eugene also shares son and actor Dan Levy with Divine.

"A couple of locations my wife Deb came, and my daughter Sarah came, and it was always great having them there," he tells PEOPLE, adding that they both tagged along while he was exploring Venice, Italy.

He continues: "Sarah came with me to the Maldives. So when you're working, that's a wonderful thing. I'd look over and see her lying in a hammock reading a book. And it's always nice, kind of warms the heart."

While Eugene visits eight countries in the new docuseries, the trailer of the show (above) reveals that traveling was never one of the star's favorite activities as he calls himself a fan of "the great indoors."

"I don't have a great sense of adventure, so it's not the most comfortable thing. If I know where I'm going, it's great. If I don't really know where I'm going, I get a little frazzled," he says.

In one episode, Eugene has to face his fear of "creepy crawlies" and head into the depths of the rainforest in Costa Rica. He tells PEOPLE he would "never have done something like that before the show came along."

He adds: "I still don't think I'm an adventurous person, but I'm doing the best I can. I think this show is good for me, because I'm growing in certain areas."

This one-season series is a moving, emotional exploration of culture, heritage, and identity, available for streaming on Hulu .

6. Long Way Up

Reunited for their third joint travel adventure show, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman go on an ambitious motorcycle ride in Apple TV’s Long Way Up . Starting in Ushuaia, a city at the tip of South America, the two friends ride for more than 100 days and 13,000 miles, crossing borders and country lines, making their way into Argentina, Chile, and Peru, all the way up to Central America and Mexico. Fans of Long Way Round and Long Way Down will love this third installment, all of which is available for streaming.

7. Street Food

For another food-based travel show, try Netflix’s Street Food , and its two available seasons, Street Food: Asia and Street Food: Latin America . Each episode takes place in a different city, with interviews of three to four street food chefs and their featured dishes. This show takes a deep dive not only into the cuisine, but primarily into the people who make it, emphasizing the journey of the individual cooks. The featured dishes are often region-specific and emblematic of the conditions and circumstances of both the city and the chef. The show focuses on the vendors’ backstories, teaching viewers about local poverty, history, culture, and identity.

These are just a starting point; there are a lot more shows out there worth a look. All you have to do is go on a surf vacation from the comfort of your couch.

Eugene Levy Is the Wrong Guy to Host the New Apple TV+ Travel Show — but He Told Us Why He's Doing It Anyway

Eugene Levy's show 'The Reluctant Traveler' premieres today on Apple TV+, and he told Travel + Leisure all about it in an exclusive interview.

Philippe Antonello/Courtesy of Apple TV+

Schitt’s Creek star Eugene Levy isn’t pretending to be the next Anthony Bourdain, and that’s what’s so refreshing about watching him trepidly travel the world in his new eight-episode show The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy on Apple TV+ , which premiered today. In Tokyo, Levy’s big culinary adventure is trying sushi for the first time and eating an egg salad sandwich at a place called American Sandwich. But like the late great Bourdain, Levy isn’t trying to be anyone else — at least in this show, he’s not.

After five decades of taking comedic risks, Levy is making his most uncomfortable moves yet, which as he says is really going anywhere outside, a world he’s spent his entire life avoiding. “I’m more of the great indoors type of guy,” says the anti-travel host in the show’s trailer.

Courtesy of Apple TV+

Levy adamantly says he doesn’t like to travel nor does he have a sense of curiosity. He also doesn’t like heights, the cold, or when it’s too warm. The list goes on. So why exactly is he hosting a travel show, we ask him? “'Why me?' was the big question,” Levy tells Travel + Leisure in an exclusive Zoom interview. Originally, the show was pitched to him to be about hotels and called “Room With a View.” The highlight of the eight episodes, beyond Levy’s hilarious discomfort, is definitely the hotels he stays at. Each episode features a unique place to stay, including Arctic Treehouse Hotel in Finnish Lapland; South Africa’s Kruger Shalati Train on the Bridge ; celebrity-favorite Amangiri in Utah; Kudadoo Maldives Private Island ; rainforest Nayara Tented Camp in Costa Rica, and Hoshinoya’s luxury ryokan in Tokyo (a missed opportunity, we think, for Levy not to awkwardly figure out onsen etiquette).

Ian Gavan/Courtesy of Apple TV+

“I've never been on camera as myself. Fifty years of doing characters, but the last thing I wanted to do was be on camera as myself,” Levy admits. “There are certain attributes you need to host a travel show. Like a sense of curiosity, and a sense of adventure.” And he has none of these, he shares. “I'm not an explorer. I like to be on terra firma .”

Levy told the Apple TV+ producers on that first call, “Honestly, I don't think I'm the guy.” But all his protesting about how anxious the thought of adventure makes him had the producers laughing. So they realized, no, this will make a great travel show: Watching a comedic icon do something he doesn’t want to do (which is anything that requires leaving home). So Levy agreed, he’d do the show and be himself.

For the first time in his five-decade-long career, the multi-Emmy Award-winning actor isn’t playing Johnny Rose or any of his other cult favorite characters. Levy is again a fish-out-of-water, but this time as himself: the risk-averse, terribly awkward, flustered, rather-stay-at-home, 76-year-old that he is.

From agreeing to go ice swimming in a Teletubby -looking drysuit in Finnish Lapland to extracting a stool sample with his bare hand from an elephant’s behind in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Levy doesn’t pretend to be anything but extremely uncomfortable, which he often is. But he doesn’t let it stop him, and celebrates the small and big wins. “First time I’ve had my hand up an elephant's ass,” he laughs.

In a hilarious scene more cringe-worthy than anything in American Pi e, Levy reaches into an elephant’s anus to find fecal matter. He’s helping Kruger’s head vet do a general health check on the animal after it's been immobilized with a tranquilizer. (Spot checks like this help monitor the elephant population in the park.) But at any moment the elephant could wake up — if you see the elephant urinating, start running, he’s warned. It surely was a surprise, as Levy thought he was finished assisting the vet after taking blood from the animal. “ I don't even like when I'm getting blood taken. But I did it,” Levy says. So when he was then told they’d like him to take a stool sample from the elephant, he promptly said there’s no way he could do that. But from off camera, Levy heard his co-producer say, “Oh, I think you can.”

The Reluctant Traveler star reminded himself he has to try things — because that’s part of the deal. So he eventually did put his hand up an elephant’s rear for the sake of science and adventure. “I would never want to do that again,” he says emphatically. ”I honestly felt bad enough for the elephant.”

It wasn’t only this intimate moment with the elephant that left a lasting impression on Levy.

“I never really had a desire to go on safari,” he says. “I didn't get the point of making a trip that long to see animals that, honestly, I already know what they look like.”

But once he got to Kruger National Park he found he was developing an affinity for the landscape, even right outside his window, at a hotel suspended on train tracks smack dab in the middle of the park called Kruger Shalati Train on the Bridge . ”You’d see an elephant wandering around, a crocodile in the shallows, water buffalo, a hippo … I actually found it very comforting.”

“And the serious nature of how much danger these animals are in hit me in a big way when I was there,” he says. “Before I went over there, it's a headline, right? The rhinos are becoming extinct. So you say, oh my god, that's terrible. But anyway, what else is on the agenda?” But South Africa surprised him, especially visiting a rhino conservancy that takes in orphaned and injured rhinos. “Before I got there, I thought they were just the ugliest animals in the world,” he shares. “But now I love these animals. So South Africa was such an eye opener for me.”

Filming the Utah episode also stuck out for Levy. “In just about every country that I've been, it's been the people that I've met and the families that I spent time with that certainly carry the most memories for me.” Spending an evening with his Navajo nation guides and their family on their reservation was quite meaningful, he shares. “There was a spirituality that kind of took over me,” as he listened to his Navajo nation guide share stories under the stars.

After filming in some of the most incredible places in the world, including the Arctic Circle and the Maldives, is Levy any less reluctant to travel now? Slightly, but not to a great degree, he shares. “On the meter of loving to travel, on a scale from one to 10, the needle is nosing over to three. I still don't get a kick out of traveling, but the good news is the needle is moving.”

But even as travel still doesn’t move the needle much for Levy, he would love to do a second season. “Do I love everything in it? Maybe not, but I love doing it. And quite honestly, I'm lucky to have this show because I think it's making me a slightly more enlightened person.”

Eugene Levy is the star of “The Reluctant Traveler” (Apple TV+, beginning Friday), a sweet stunt travel show that mixes touristic interest with incidental comedy and late-life personal growth. I imagine this all began with some producer’s notion that it would be amusing to have the guy who ran the down-market Rosebud Motel in “Schitt’s Creek” host a show about remarkable, better-than-first-class luxury hotels around the world. But, reportedly, the series as it emerged was shaped by Levy’s genuine disinclination toward adventure and new experiences — his comfort zone is seemingly the size of a walk-in closet — and the series finds things for him to do he would ordinarily avoid.

The show combines travel-series tropes with prearranged scenarios in which Levy is dropped into challenging situations — which, for the most part, after some hemming and hawing, he submits to, whether it’s walking across a suspension bridge (he fears heights) or eating sushi (he never has) in a Tokyo “art” restaurant, or simply heading out into an unfamiliar city.

A fit 75 at the time of filming (though he will point out more than once that he’s “old”), Levy finds himself driving a dog sled, piloting a sailboat, riding a horse, planting a coffee tree, screwing a hole in the ice to fish, feeding reindeer or sheep. (“The sheep ran as soon as they saw me. Did they see a movie they didn’t particularly care for?”) In a different sort of challenge, he’s sent for a session of “forest therapy” — he’s never had or wanted any sort of therapy, preferring to keep the private private — where, advised to reveal something he has never told a soul, he confesses to the Costa Rican rainforest that he once lost $800 in a poker game.

THE WHITE LOTUS Season 2 Sabrina Impacciatore

Entertainment & Arts

How HBO’s ‘White Lotus’ captures the theater of the tourism industry

I worked for several years as a travel writer. Here’s what Mike White’s dramedy gets exactly right about tourism as immersive but shallow theater.

Dec. 12, 2022

Food evidently means a lot to him — at the counter of an Italian osteria, he actually bounces on his feet in anticipation — but his tastes are simple. (“If it’s too Michelin for me it’s sometimes tough to find something you really want to eat.”) Filling out a pre-arrival questionnaire for a resort in the Maldives that promises to fulfill any request — acquiring a pat of butter from a specific region of France is given to him as an example — he lists his dream meal as a cheeseburger, fries and shake.

The hotels are indeed unusual — in South Africa, it’s a string of converted railroad cars parked across a bridge, in Venice it’s a former palace — but they are also castles in the air, beyond the reach of most ordinarily employed humans. (Some make the White Lotus look like … well, the Rosebud Motel.) Fortunately, the series doesn’t spend all that much time indoors, as much as Levy is at times tempted to; ordinarily, he says, on the first morning in his Venetian palace, he would stay in for hours, “having a coffee — or two.” But the terms of the agreement send him outside to “get lost,” though really only until he’s delivered into the hands of his next friendly guide. And, of course, there’s always a film crew at his shoulder.

To his moral credit, Levy often seems as ill at ease with luxury as with the prospect of a night walk through the rainforest or getting into a helicopter. “I can understand eating 24 carrots, but eating gold is a whole other thing,” he says, presented with a dessert trimmed with gold leaf. This pays off, more comfortably, when he visits the family workshop where the gold leaf is hammered by hand and is enlisted to assist.

For the cast of ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ the end is near. That means one thing: heartache

Season 6 of “Schitt’s Creek” promises to be emotional. The cast says filming it was plenty hard.

Jan. 6, 2020

Although the vicarious tourism is part of the appeal — the show looks good and gives an excellent sense of its diverse settings, from Lapland to Lisbon to the Utah desert — it’s best when Levy is most visibly nervous (which is also when he’s at his funniest) or emotionally moved or connecting with locals, the people who call him “Eugene” as opposed to “Mr. Levy” and who laugh at his jokes rather than staring quizzically.

Levy is an interested interviewer, happiest when conversation or circumstances lead to talk of family, theirs or his — wife Deb and children (and “Schitt’s” co-stars) Dan and Sarah Levy. He relates on a personal level to a gondolier whose son will eventually take over his business. In Costa Rica he “crashes” the 85th birthday of a carpenter, where, to his surprise, he discovers “American Pie” fans; in Utah, which has a significant emotional effect on him (it’s his first time in the desert), he spends time with the family of his Navajo guide.

I’ve had several journalistic occasions to spend time with Levy, and though you can’t always tell about people whose job is in part to be nice to journalists, the man onscreen here seems very much the person I’ve met in person. Self-mocking, funny, modest in that Canadian way — “I hope by allowing me to stay here you’re not lowering the bar,” he tells the manager of his Venetian hotel, as he’s shown a special guest book filled with famous signatures — and excellent company.

The 26 Best Shows on Apple TV+ Right Now

Still image from Apple TV's The Big Door Prize containing a person standing in a road at night

Slowly but surely, Apple TV+ is finding its feet. The streaming service, which at launch we called “odd, angsty, and horny as hell,” has evolved into a diverse library of dramas, documentaries, and comedies. Now, it’s library is so packed, we’ve declared it “ the new HBO .”

Curious but don’t know where to get started? Below are our picks for the best shows on the service. (Also, here are our picks for the best movies on Apple TV+ .) When you’re done, head over to our guides to the best shows on Netflix , best movies on Hulu , and best movies on Amazon Prime , because you can never have too much television.

If you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a commission. This helps support our journalism. Learn more .

OK, so Loot isn't exactly about MacKenzie Scott's divorce from Jeff Bezos , but it is about a woman named Molly (Maya Rudolph) who separates from her tech billionaire husband and devotes herself to philanthropic work. Also, creators Alan Yang ( Master of None ) and Matt Hubbard ( Superstore ) were kind of inspired by Bezos and Scott's split. With an incredible supporting cast that includes Joel Kim Booster, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, and Adam Scott, it's a quirky comedy with a lot of heart—and the kind of thing you (probably) won't see on Amazon Prime Video .

The Big Door Prize

With The Big Door Prize Chris O'Dowd finally got the “guy leading a show” role he was always meant for. In the series, he plays a 40-year-old high school teacher named Dusty who's pretty content with his life until a magic machine shows up in his small town. The machine, you see, tells people their life's potential, and as soon as people around him start using it, everything changes. Marriages end, paths divert, and eventually Dusty must confront whether he's happy in his own life. Season 2 of the series, which launched at the end of April, explores what happens after everyone upends their lives.

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin

Dick Turpin was a real highwayman in 18th-century England who was ultimately executed for horse theft. But the myths surrounding him are far more interesting than the facts. The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin , true to its name, opts to stick with the fun stuff. Starring Noel Fielding ( The Great British Bake Off ) in the title role, this six-episode series presents Turpin as someone who stumbled into leading a group of outlaws and made the best of it. Enjoy the ride.

Constellation

Around here we have a theory that Apple TV+ is the new HBO . At the same time, we also wonder among ourselves whether it’s the new Syfy. After opening with a bang in 2019 with For All Mankind , it has released a steady drumbeat of trippy, spacey, timey-wimey prestige shows, from Foundation to Severance . The latest is Constellation , an eight-part thriller about an astronaut (Noomi Rapace) who returns to Earth after a disaster in space to find things are very off. Brain-bending and tense, it’s the kind of sci-fi that sucks you in. Get lost.

Masters of the Air

Generally speaking, “World War II drama” and Steven Spielberg is probably enough to get anyone to click Play on this series, but it’s got a lot more than just a good elevator pitch. Based on Donald L. Miller’s Masters of the Air , this series dives deep into the lives of the 100th Bomb Group—aka the “Bloody Hundredth”—a group of pilots tasked with risking their lives to fight Nazi Germany from the air. Spielberg and Tom Hanks serve as executive producers, and the cast features Elvis himself, Austin Butler, as well as Saltburn ’s Barry Keoghan and Doctor Who ’s new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.

The New Look

Keeping with the World War II theme, The New Look follows Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain, and Cristóbal Balenciaga as they lay the path for modern fashion in Nazi-occupied Paris. The cast features Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior, Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel, and Maisie Williams as Catherine Dior, and also has a soundtrack courtesy of Jack Antonoff that’s chock full of early 20th-century music covered by the likes of Perfume Genius and Florence Welch.

Criminal Record

Apple TV+’s dramas are on a hot streak lately. Now that stellar series like For All Mankind and Slow Horses are finally getting audiences, the streamer is putting more in their queues with Criminal Record . Starring former Doctor Who Doctor Peter Capaldi, the crime drama follows two cops—Capaldi’s Daniel Hegarty and Cush Jumbo’s June Lenker—as they try to get to the bottom of a long-settled case. Daniel worked the case originally and got a confession; June got a fresh tip and wants him to reopen it and find out whether the man who went away for murder is actually innocent. Might sound a bit overdone, but the series also works in elements of law enforcement shortcomings and race in a rapidly-changing Britain for a series that’s about more than just one case.

There’s this face Idris Elba does. He’s been perfecting it since he was Stringer Bell on The Wire . It’s the look of total calm even when he’s talking about the most harrowing thing you can imagine. That face gets a full workout in Hijack , in which Elba plays a corporate negotiator who finds himself trying to settle things with a group of, yes, hijackers who have taken over the flight he’s boarded to get home to his family. This series is seven episodes, roughly seven hours—the same length of the flight, and it follows the drama in the air and the political maneuvering below before attempting to stick the landing. Do stay around until the end.

For All Mankind

Long before Foundation , there was For All Mankind . The show not only set the tone for the kind of glossy prestige sci-fi Apple TV+ had ambitions to make, but it was also the streaming service's attempt to plant its flag in the realm of streaming giants . A solid slice of alternate history, the show starts with a very smart premise: What if the US had been edged out in putting a man on the moon? How would the space-race rivalry between the Americans and the Soviets have played out? It's mostly a slick, stylish, NASA-heavy period drama, but as this is from the brain of Ronald D. Moore, there are a few standout moments and episodes with attention shared around the large ensemble cast. It might be the best sci-fi show you're not watching, and if that's true you now have four seasons to catch up on.

Messi Meets America

If your home screen hasn't made it obvious, Apple TV+ is super stoked about soccer these days. The streamer's latest foray: Messi Meets America , a six-part docuseries about all-star player Lionel Messi's move to Major League Soccer's Inter Miami club. The first three episodes aired on October 11, 2023, and subsequent episodes aired in conjunction with last year's MLS season. Messi Mania, indeed.

Lessons in Chemistry

Based on the debut novel from science writer Bonnie Garmus, Lessons in Chemistry is the story of Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson), who gets hired to host a cooking show after she's fired from the lab she was working in for doing science while female. Obviously, the show Elizabeth puts on ends up being about a lot more than just having dinner on the table at 6 pm, but we suggest you watch to find out just how revolutionary it is.

The Morning Show

Every streaming service needs a flashy mainstream drama with Hollywood heavyweights to pull in viewers. Apple TV+ has The Morning Show . When Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) loses her morning news program cohost Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) following sexual misconduct accusations, she gets paired up with Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon). What unfolds is a #MeToo-era drama full of TV network intrigue and Sorkin-lite dialog. In its second season, it went deep on Covid-19, and in the third season the series' fictional network, UBA, finds itself dealing with the aftermath of a cyberattack. The third season premiered last September, so now is a good time to dive back in—or watch for the first time.

Shining Girls

This Elisabeth Moss psychological thriller/murder mystery came out in 2022 and never really got the buzz it likely deserved. All of that to say, you should probably watch it if you haven't already. Moss plays Kirby, a woman who believes a recent Chicago murder may be linked to an attack on her many years prior. She teams with a Sun-Times reporter to investigate, but the deeper she digs the more her own reality starts to shift. Based on the book The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes, this series may seem like just another murder mystery, but its sci-fi twists put it one step ahead.

WIRED called Foundation a “flawed masterpiece” in our review of the first season. Considering the complexities of adapting a sprawling Isaac Asimov book series, it was high praise. Now, the dizzyingly ambitious Foundation is back for its second season. Starring Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, a math professor who, along with his loyal followers, is exiled for predicting the oncoming end of the galactic empire that rules over them, the show often suffers under the weight of its own massive scope. But it also features wonderful performances from Lee Pace and beautiful images inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope . If you have a soft spot for big sci-fi dramas, this Game-of-Thrones -in-space wannabe is a must-watch.

The Crowded Room

Set in the late 1970s, The Crowded Room stars Tom Holland as Danny Sullivan, a young man arrested after a grisly shooting in New York City. Following his arrest, this 10-episode limited series unfolds into a twisty whodunit as interrogator Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried) tries to suss out what happened with the shooting and the peculiar events in Sullivan’s past that may have shaped how he ended up involved. Holland told Extra that the shoot for The Crowded Room , which he also produced, “broke” him, leading to him taking a yearlong hiatus from acting. Want to see why? Watch now.

As WIRED's Kate Knibbs noted in the wake of Silo 's release, this show is prestige sci-fi gold . Based on a dystopian book trilogy by Hugh Howey , the series focuses on a subterranean bunker—the silo of the title—where humanity has sequestered itself after the apocalypse. Some are hoping to win the chance to reproduce, some are trying to solve mysterious murders. Everyone watching is enjoying figuring out what's going on in this underground city—and what's happening outside of it.

On paper,  Ted Lasso sounds terrible. The inconceivable story of an American football coach who has never watched a game of soccer somehow landing himself a job as coach of a (fictional) Premier League club and trying to make up for his total lack of qualifications by being a nice guy. Sounds unwatchable, doesn’t it? And yet  Ted Lasso has captured the hearts and minds of viewers on both sides of the pond with its large-as-life cast and irresistibly wholesome messaging, hoovering up awards in the process. The third and final season wrapped up last year, so now is the perfect time to binge it all.

High Desert

The Patricia Arquette–aissance doesn’t get as much ink as Matthew McConaughey or Keanu Reeves did during their second comings, but it’s here—in part thanks to the rise of streaming. Between  The Act and  Severance , Arquette has received some of the highest accolades of her long career recently, and  High Desert  seems poised to keep the award nominations coming. While coming to terms with the death of her mother, Peggy (Arquette)—an addict—decides she wants to pick up the pieces of her life and become a private investigator. She finds an unwitting employer/sometime mentor in Bruce Harvey (Brad Garrett), but not everyone is onboard with Peggy’s career decisions—namely, her straitlaced sister (Christine Taylor). It’s an odd duck of a show, which is perfectly suited to Arquette’s ethereal acting style, allowing her to seamlessly flit between moments of tragedy and laugh-out-loud comedy, with the audiences doing their best to keep up. The all-star cast is made even more impressive by recurring appearances from Bernadette Peters as Peggy’s late mom.

Look, Discovery doesn't get to corner the market on animal documentaries—and this 10-part docuseries proves it. Featuring elephant seals, brown bears, orangutans, giant otters, and all kinds of massive mammals in between, it's the perfect thing if you just want to escape and learn a few tidbits about nature. But the best part? It's narrated by Tom Hiddleston, and there's just something charming about hearing the voice of Loki talk about a bunch of different animals he could turn himself into in the blink of an eye.

Do you enjoy  In Treatment  but wish it was, you know, fun? Then  Shrinking  may be right for you. Created by Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein—of  Ted Lasso fame—and Jason Segel, the show is about Jimmy (Segel), a therapist struggling to get over the death of his wife and reconnect with his daughter and patients. That may sound like a downer, and the show isn’t without its harder moments, but it’s buoyed by the fact that it’s also a workplace comedy focusing on the therapy practice where Jimmy works alongside Harrison Ford’s Paul and Jessica Williams’ Gaby.  Shrinking , ultimately, is about the things people do to cope, but it also features a dream team of a cast and one very memorable party scene featuring an (unrelated) vomit-soaked piano and a super-stoned Ford.

Cinematically, M. Night Shyamalan can be a little hit-or-miss, but Servant , which the filmmaker executive produces and occasionally directs, is stellar. It's about a Philadelphia couple—a chef and a news anchor—who lose a child only to have it mysteriously come back to life (maybe) with the arrival of their new nanny. (You really just need to watch the show for any of this to make sense.) Moody, freaky, and occasionally even funny, it'll suck you in. And now that it wrapped its fourth and final season, there’s plenty to enjoy.

The Essex Serpent

Claire Danes doing her best trembling-chin acting in period garb, Tom Hiddleston as a town vicar, rumors about a mysterious mythological serpent—is there anything not to love about this show? No, there’s not. The Essex Serpent , based on the novel by Sarah Perry, follows a recent widow (Danes) as she heads to the countryside in Essex to investigate a “sea dragon.” There, she meets a vicar, Will (Hiddleston), who is far more skeptical of the serpent’s existence. Lush and inviting, it’s the ideal period mystery.

Out of all the shows on this list, Severance may be the one that firmly established Apple TV+ as a streaming player with edgy prestige content. Adam Scott plays Mark, a man distraught by the death of his wife who opts to undergo Severance, a procedure that divides his memories of work from those of his life at home. He’s quite happy with the setup until a former Lumon Industries coworker tracks him down when he’s out-of-office, setting off a series of events that makes him question not only Severance but the work his company does. From there, it only gets more weird and bleak with each passing minute. Tense and heartbreaking, this show, the bulk of which was directed by Ben Stiller, will keep you guessing and questioning the whole way through.

Little America

Originally released when Donald Trump was still president of the United States, Little America was and remains a timely reminder of what actually makes America great. Each episode of this anthology series focuses on a different story of immigrants living in America. From an undocumented high school student who discovers a talent for squash to a “bra whisperer” in Brooklyn, every one of these 30-minute vignettes—all of them based on real people—is inspiring and important viewing.

Mythic Quest

An all-too-rare example of a video game TV show that really works, Mythic Quest is one of the best new workplace comedies of the past few years. Presented in perfectly bingeable half-hour episodes, the show follows a fictional game studio known for its World of Warcraft –like MMO, Mythic Quest , as the people who make it slalom through their many quirky relationships. The writing is excellent, consistently funny and emotionally impactful when you least expect it, and the show manages to confront real issues in the industry without sacrificing laughs.

Hailee Steinfeld is a riotous young Emily Dickinson in this half-hour show from creator Alena Smith. It was part of the original Apple TV+ lineup and quickly distinguished itself thanks to its off-kilter vision of 19th-century Amherst, Massachusetts. The first season is a set of sharp, surreal vignettes, inspired by Dickinson's work and tracing the imagined life of the young poet, who is rebelling against her father, the town's societal rules, and just about everything else. The second and third seasons go deeper, examining not only the poet's life, but also the roles that race, gender, sexuality, and class played in the early days of America. If you're a Dickinson stan, love a bit of smart queer dramedy, or just have a penchant for a modern soundtrack in a Civil War–era show, you’ll dig this.

Apple TV+ shows and movies: Everything to watch on Apple TV Plus

Avatar for Benjamin Mayo

Apple TV+ offers exclusive Apple original TV shows and movies in 4K HDR quality. You can watch across all of your screens and pick up where you left off on any device. Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month. Here’s every Apple original television show and movie available now on Apple TV+, as well as the latest trailers …

Apple TV+ content is available exclusively through the Apple TV app . You can watch on your Apple TV set-top box, iPhone, or iPad as you might expect.

But you don’t need the latest Apple TV 4K to enjoy Apple TV+. The TV app is also available on other platforms like Amazon Fire TV , Roku , Sony PlayStation , Xbox , and even the web at tv.apple.com .

Apple TV+ offers original comedies, dramas, thrillers, documentaries, and kids shows.

For your $9.99/month subscription, you can watch all of Apple’s originals — as listed below. You can download to watch offline too. Apple is adding new content every single month.

How to watch the free Apple TV+ shows

travel shows on apple tv

The TV app is the exclusive destination for Apple TV+, but the TV app is a little confusing because it blends together purchasable TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store, which you can buy or rent, content from other apps like Amazon Prime and Disney+, and Apple TV Channels.

The Watch Now screen does not really distinguish between content that you own and can watch, and just Apple’s general recommendations.

The easiest way to get started with Apple TV+ is to open the Apple TV app on your device , and tap on the Originals tab. (On some platforms, this tab is simply labelled using the ‘tv+’ logo.)

This tab takes you to the Apple TV+ channel page. This shows you all of the Apple TV+ shows and movies available to watch, separated into categories like comedy, drama and family fun.

Be aware, the web experience at tv.apple.com is a bit barebonds compared to the native TV app on devices, and it only shows Apple original content. For the best experience, use the TV app on a device like Apple TV 4K .

What to watch on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ (Apple TV Plus, or as some erroneously call it Apple+ TV) is still in its infancy but has already seen breakout hits including comedy Ted Lasso and workplace sci-fi drama Severance .

Apple aims for premium quality across its drama, comedy, and documentary TV shows and movies so everything should reach a reasonable level of quality and hopefully be worth your time. In terms of personal recommendations, I suggest starting with Ted Lasso , For All Mankind , Severance , Trying , and the movie Finch .

Apple’s time travel comedy Time Bandits starts streaming in July

It’s an adaptation of a 1981 film directed by terry gilliam..

By Andrew Webster , an entertainment editor covering streaming, virtual worlds, and every single Pokémon video game. Andrew joined The Verge in 2012, writing over 4,000 stories.

You won’t need to travel too far into the future to see Apple TV Plus’ next adventure series. The streamer just announced that Time Bandits , an adaptation of the 1981 Terry Gilliam film of the same name, will premiere on July 24th. The TV version of the story will span 10 episodes and, according to Apple, is about “an unpredictable journey through time and space with a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an 11-year-old history buff named Kevin.”

  • Apple TV Plus is turning into the best place for streaming sci-fi

The show has some comedy bona fides at least, with Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris serving as co-showrunners and Taika Waititi also on board as co-creator and executive producer. The cast, meanwhile, is led by Lisa Kudrow and a young Kal-El Tuck and also features the likes of Tadhg Murphy, Charlyne Yi, and Roger Nsengiyumva. You can get a first look at some of the main cast in the photo above.

Here’s the full description, according to Apple:

Guided by Lisa Kudrow, the eccentric crew of bandits embark on epic adventures while evil forces threaten their conquests and life as they know it. As the group transports through time and space, the gang stumbles upon fascinating worlds of the distant past while seeking out treasure, depending on Kevin to shed light on each situation. The Time Bandits witness the creation of Stonehenge, see the Trojan Horse in action, escape dinosaurs in the prehistoric ages, wreak havoc during medieval times, experience the ice age, ancient civilizations, the Harlem Renaissance, and much more along the way.

Time Bandits will continue a steady run of genre shows on Apple TV Plus. The not-quite-what-it-seems detective series Sugar just wrapped up its first season, the multiversal Dark Matter is ongoing , and July will also see the premiere of a robot mystery show called Sunny .

The 10 Best Time Travel TV Shows of All Time

Time-traveling stories make the best TV shows, as they can explore the characters, while trying not to destroy the past, present, and future.

Time traveling has always been a rich place for fiction, as the idea has been used in many novels and movies. In the last few years, and with the Golden Era of television, more shows have been using this subgenre, as it’s a great way to explore characters and their actions, and it gives big stakes to every one of their stories.

There have been all kinds of time-traveling TV series. Some follow the Back to the Future idea of going to the past while trying not to change anything. Others are more like Groundhog Day , and use the time loop idea to examine their characters. Some try to use the science behind such a thing as one of their storytelling pillars, while others say that time traveling is just “A big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey whimey stuff”, so the subgenre has many possibilities and sides. Here are the 10 best time-traveling TV shows of all time, ranked.

10 12 Monkeys (2015 - 2018)

Inspired by the 1995 movie of the same name, starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, 12 Monkeys is a show about a deadly virus and traveling through time to stop the sinister organization that creates it, the Army of the 12 Monkeys. That’s what James Cole (James Stanford), Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull), and the maybe crazy Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) try to do in every episode.

Why We've Included 12 Monkeys

What starts as a simple time-traveling mystery gets more complicated as time paradoxes, surprising twists and turns, and new characters appear. The lead characters and the chemistry between them are what make the show worth it, as they try to keep connected through time and space while knowing that they might never see each other again.

Stream on Hulu

9 DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (2016 - 2022)

Dc's legends of tomorrow.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow started as a serious time-traveling show where some discarded heroes from the other Arrowverse TV universe became heroes. What started as a serious story about destiny and avoiding time aberrations became something much more fun and hilarious.

Why Legends of Tomorrow Makes the List

Every season has some great moments , but from the second season on, the series improved greatly. From then on, it never took itself too seriously, and it became the show in that universe with more diversity, fun, queerness, meta-commentaries, and a great running gag about a weird toy named Beebo. They always break the timeline, but they’re also the ones who fix it in the end.

Stream on Netflix

8 Lost (2004 - 2010)

Oceanic Flight 815 has an emergency landing on a strange island, and as they try to survive, they discover this place is like no other, as it has polar bears, and maybe even a monster. That’s what happens in the Lost pilot, and from there, things keep only getting weirder and weirder.

Why Lost Belongs Here

The show was many things all at once. It created a new narrative tool in TV series, as it used flashbacks in every episode to tell the survivors' stories from before they landed on the island, and worked in all kinds of genres, from drama, and action, to sci-fi and, yes, time traveling. The show has an incredible cast who has kept working , and the latest seasons of the show are the ones that are more in this list genre, but what makes it great is how that phenomenon affects Desmond (Henry Ian Cusack), and his love story with Penny (Sonya Walger), especially in the time-traveling episode, “The Constant”, one of the shows’ best.

7 Outlander (2014 - Present)

Based on the novel series, Outlander follows combat nurse Claire Randall from the year 1945, who is mysteriously transported back to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world and sees her life threatened. However, when Claire is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a genuine and passionate relationship is ignited that tears Claire's heart between two different men from two clashing lives.

Based on the series of novels of the same name by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander tells the story of Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a World War II nurse who is somehow transported into 18th-century Scotland. There, he meets Jamie (Sam Heughan), and they fall in love.

Why We've Included Outlander

There are not that many time-traveling romance stories, and only because of that, this TV series should be on the list. But this show is much more; the chemistry between the two actors is swoon-worthy, and once she goes back to her original present, things get much more complicated for both characters, for the better, making their love story one for the ages.

6 Timeless (2016 - 2018)

Timeless tells the story of a team trying to stop time from being changed for the worse, as an ex-NSA agent, (Goran Visnjic) steals and uses a time-traveling machine for his nefarious purposes. The team is formed by the three kinds of people you would always need on a time-traveling adventure; a history professor (Abigail Spencer), an engineer who helped create the time machine (Malcolm Barrett), and a soldier (Matt Lanter), for when everything goes wrong.

Why Timeless Makes the List

The chemistry between the three leads is great and makes you want to spend time with them on their adventures. If that wasn't enough, most of their time traveling takes them to times known to audiences, from the killing of Abraham Lincoln to the Hindenburg disaster, or the killing of Bonnie and Clyde, creating stories that also affect the lead characters directly or indirectly.

5 Russian Doll (2019 - Present)

Russian doll.

Read Our Second Season Review

Russian Doll is a time loop show as Nadia (Natasha Lyonne, who also created, wrote, and directed the show) keeps repeating her 36th birthday party. Things get even weirder when she discovers the same is happening to Alan (Charlie Barnett), a man she has never met.

Why Russian Doll Is Included

The time loop idea can get tiring, but Russian Doll keeps finding ways to change and improve the idea in every episode, creating a show that has comedy, drama, and many surprises, while keeping the sarcastic, sardonic, voice of her creator and star, Lyonne. The second season is even weirder and wilder, and fans are still hoping for a third one.

4 Quantum Leap (1989 - 1993)

Quantum Leap was one of the first TV series about time travel, and it still holds up . The show explores the time jumps of Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula), as he helped good people in the past, “leap” into their identity, and better history in the process with the help of his hologram companion Al (Dean Stockwell).

Why Quantum Leap Is a Must-Watch

The show might look a dated now, but it had a great premise and was the perfect idea for a procedural show, where in every new episode, Sam had to play someone different with their own problems, making it a rom-com one episode, a thriller another, and giving it space for social commentary the next, so that the character could learn some lessons and help those in need. The idea was so ahead of its time, that the show got a revival two years ago and is back on TV, with Raymond Lee playing the scientist leaping through time, while his friends and fiancée are trying to help him in 2023.

3 The Lazarus Project (2022 - Present)

Read Our Review

The Lazarus Project starts when George (Paapa Essiedu) notices he’s repeating a day in his life, and he doesn’t understand what’s going on. He later discovers there’s an organization, The Lazarus Project, that can reset time to July 1st, if there’s a need to prevent a mass extinction-level event. Since he can see those resets, he becomes the newest agent in the organization.

Why The Lazarus Project Makes the List

After a first episode with a lot of exposition, what makes The Lazarus Project great is how it focuses on its characters and how the knowledge that there’s the possibility of resetting a timeline affects their behavior, and what they would do for a loved one. The characters are the most important thing in the show, although that doesn’t mean avoiding car chases, shooting, and fun spy shenanigans, so they can avoid the world’s end.

2 Doctor Who (1963 - Present)

Originally premiered in 1963, Doctor Who is a sci-fi series that follows a powerful being known as a Time Lord, referred to as the Doctor. Using an interdimensional time-traveling ship known as the TARDIS, the Doctor travels time and space with various companions as they solve multiple problems and help avert catastrophe as much as they almost cause it. Though the Doctor is always the same character, they experience regenerations, allowing them to be recast every few seasons as a unique immortal being with new personality traits.

Doctor Who has had many lives since it started in 1963, but the gist of it is always the same: The Doctor (who has been played by many actors over the years), explores time and space through the TARDIS with a human companion, and has unique adventures.

Why Doctor Who Is an Obvious Choice

The imagination of its stories, the many time periods it holds, and how you can see the changes in society and technology through the years and its more than 800 episodes. Since the show was revived in 2005, the storytelling has been less innocent and has given the Doctor dilemmas like never before. When the show comes back, it will have a new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa ( Sex Education and Barbie ), and we can’t wait to see what kind of personality he has, and what kind of time-traveling adventures he gets into.

1 Dark (2017 - 2020)

Dark starts with the story of a child being kidnapped in the quiet German town of Winden. From there, the whole community is affected by many time-travel stories, as this has happened before, and their people experience the past, and the present, and how that changes their actions.

What Makes Dark the Best Time Travel Show of All Time?

This is not an easy story to follow, as there are stories in more than one time, and it rewards multiple viewings. What makes it great is the fact that it uses time travel not as a means to an end, but as a way to explore family, love, how a person can touch another and change their behavior, and much more. The show keeps surprising viewers, as nothing is what it seems, and has incredible acting, script, and visuals that lasted three seasons, and has a perfect ending, making it great for a time-traveling binge.

How a Physics Professor Helped Shape Interdimensional Travel in 'Dark Matter'

B lake Crouch isn't a scientist, but that didn't stop him from including real scientific theories in his bestselling novel Dark Matter and the Apple TV Plus sci-fi thriller based on it. One theory that really stuck with him was that of alternate universes.

"I got really turned on by the idea of multiple realities and more so the science behind it," Crouch told me in an interview. "I [thought] it would be really cool to write a novel about quantum physics."

Crouch said he didn't take any science or math courses in college. So to incorporate quantum physics into the book and show, he worked with Clifford Johnson, a physics professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I talked with Johnson about the physics behind the fiction.

"It really is a compelling story all about the choices we make in our lives," Johnson said. "It's a real pleasure to see that much science upfront, and so I helped [Crouch] develop a lot of the ideas."

The main theory Dark Matter explores is that of the multiverse: the theory that there are infinite other universes beyond our own. To explore this theory, the show uses an interdimensional travel device called "the box."

The box is a hefty contraption that might not be as visually appealing as similar devices in other works of science fiction, like Back to the Future's DeLorean or Dr. Who's Tardis, but there are real theories behind how it might work. Who knows, maybe these theories will lead to breakthroughs in the world of physics, or maybe they already have in another universe.

How does the box work in Dark Matter?

Dark Matter's box is an example of an interdimensional travel device . According to TV Tropes , these kinds of devices allow a person or group of people to travel to another universe. That journey starts with the box.

In Dark Matter, characters enter the box -- which blocks out everything from the outside -- and take a mind-altering drug. Our characters then imagine the reality they want before exiting the box to a different universe. Johnson explained that the box is a way to visualize all possible outcomes for a superposed quantum state.

OK, explain it to me like I'm five, please

An easier way to understand this, and superposed quantum states, is by using the famous Schrödinger's cat thought experiment.

The gist of the experiment is you put a cat in a sealed box that you can't see into, along with something that can kill it, like poison or radioactive material. Then, because you can't interact with what's inside the box or see whether the item in the box killed the cat or not, you can't observe whether the cat is dead or alive at any given moment. Therefore the cat is both at the same time -- it's in a superposition of both dead and alive. Only after you've opened the box and observed the cat can you report on the cat's state.

Johnson said that the cat in the experiment has two possible outcomes -- alive or dead -- but when a person enters the box in Dark Matter, they have many outcomes they can choose from. Dark Matter's box is in essence the inverse of Schrödinger's cat. Instead of an observer not being able to see or interact with a small portion of reality, the observer can't see or interact with anything outside of a small portion of reality (the box).

So, the way the Dark Matter box works is that a person enters it, imagines the reality they want to be in with the help of a drug and then exits the box to the reality they constructed with their mind. While the person is in the box, they put themselves in a state of superposition among all the different realities, and the one they focus on becomes real once they observe it by leaving the box.

Could the box really work?

Maybe, but we may never know. Some people have posited theories on reality similar to those posed in Dark Matter.

"The guys who won the Nobel Prize for physics in ['22] were talking about nonlocality and the idea that objective reality doesn't exist," Crouch said. "There's no independent reality that is just hanging out there without conscious, biocentric beings observing it."

Others have said similar things. Robert Lanza , an adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, developed a theory of biocentrism that argues that consciousness is the driving force behind reality and the universe, not the other way around.

"Nothing has existence unless you, I, or some living creature perceives it," Lanza wrote in the American Scholar in 2007 . "The images you see are a construction by the brain. Everything you are experiencing right now… is being actively generated in your mind."

The biggest obstacle to proving these theories is building a device like the box. Crouch and Johnson both said designing the box was a challenge since it had to block out everything -- and I truly mean everything -- for a person to be in superposition.

"Things like temperature, anything above absolute zero," Crouch said. "Or neutrinos flying through our atmosphere, constantly flying through our bodies… Variations in wind, temperature, all these things…"

Any shifts in these variables would cause the box to simply be a hunk of metal since those shifts would act on the person inside the box, taking them out of a superposed state.

"We've never built anything like that and it's not clear that we really can," Johnson said. "But it's fun to imagine what that might look like if you could."

Are there any other ways to get to alternate universes if they exist?

If entering a state of superposition to enter into another reality seems a little too far out there, perhaps a black hole can help. This might sound as fantastical as Dark Matter's box, but renowned physicist Stephen Hawking entertained the idea. Hawking theorized that a black hole could function as a passage to somewhere else, including another universe.

"They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought," Hawking said in a 2008 lecture . "Things can get out of a black hole, both to the outside, and possibly, to another universe. So if you feel you are in a black hole, don't give up. There's a way out."

We don't know for certain what would happen if a person fell into a black hole, but Gaurav Khanna , a physics professor at the University of Rhode Island , told me in an interview that a person might be able to survive the encounter.

Khanna and a team of researchers found that if a person, or spacecraft, fell into a supermassive black hole, like Gargantua in the film Interstellar or Sagittarius A* in our own solar system, it might be a smooth and steady ride.

"While we don't know what the other side of a black hole connects to," Khanna said, "If we make a leap of faith and envision that the other side of a black hole connects to another part of our universe, or perhaps another dimension, then you could smoothly, without much discomfort, go from one to the other."

Khanna said that a black hole must meet three criteria for it to possibly function as a portal: it has to be considered supermassive, it has to be old and it must be rotating. If a black hole doesn't meet those requirements, like it's too small, well…

"The smaller [the black hole], the worse it's going to be," Khanna said. "Even if you go to a black hole the size of our sun, I don't think there's any hope of surviving."

So we could travel to other universes with the right conditions?

"This is not a blueprint on how to travel to other worlds," Crouch said. "This is a speculative idea that says, 'Oh if we had a few things, a few advances in these certain areas of technology, then perhaps we can start having a conversation about how macroscopic objects exist in a state of superposition.'"

If traveling to another universe by getting a person into a state of superposition like in Dark Matter proves unreliable, a supermassive black hole might do the trick.

"The door's open a little bit," Khanna said. "We have some understanding, experimentally, that this could actually work."

You can watch Dark Matter now on Apple TV Plus ( $10 a month ), and new episodes are available on Wednesdays. You can also check out how February was the warmest February on record and what to know about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch .

'Palm Royale' (2024)

Rotten tomatoes: 56% | imdb: 6.8/10, palm royale.

Read Our Review Palm Beach high society in the late 60s is a very exclusive scene, and Maxine Simmons ( Kristen Wiig ) hopes to join their ranks — no matter what it takes. Created by Abe Sylvia and based on Juliet McDaniel ’s 2018 novel Mr. & Mrs. American Pie , Palm Royale is a 10-episode dramedy miniseries that follows Maxine’s story, with the likes of Ricky Martin , Laura Dern , and Allison Janney starring alongside Wiig. The series premiered its first three episodes on Apple TV+ on March 20, with the rest following weekly. And while the critical response to Palm Royale has been rather mixed, the responses from the audience have been largely positive. The biggest highlight of the miniseries is its visual style and production. Simply put, it’s wonderful to look at, showcasing Palm Beach as a veritable paradise. The performances of its star-studded cast are also a major draw. Wiig is phenomenal as the ambitious Maxine, utterly capturing the audience’s attention. Though the narrative can be bumpy (especially at the beginning), the sheer beauty of the series, combined with its cast of fabulous and hilarious characters, makes Palm Royale a thoroughly engaging watch.

'Ted Lasso' (2020 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 90% | imdb: 8.8/10.

Read Our Review

Regarded as the most decorated and well-known comedy series on the platform, Ted Lasso is a sports/workplace comedy centered around the titular football coach ( Jason Sudeikis ) who moves from the US to the UK to coach the soccer team AFC Richmond. Despite having no experience with this other kind of football, his charming optimism brings some inspiring change to the team that even gets to the cynical new team owner Rebecca Welton ( Hannah Waddingham ). Even with its simple premise, the series' popularity skyrocketed during its release in 2020 due to its refreshingly upbeat tone and humor that definitely helped the audience in light of the pandemic. Over the course of its two seasons, it has earned multiple nominations and awards from the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Emmys . It's the ideal time to catch up on this series with its third and most likely final season reportedly being set for release by the end of this year. Watch on Apple TV+

'Still Up' (2023 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 75% | imdb: 6.6/10.

Insomniacs Lisa ( Antonia Thomas ) and Danny ( Craig Roberts ) spend their nights, as the title suggests, Still Up as they discuss life’s biggest questions — only they’ve never actually met. A unique story is told through the central pairing of Thomas and Roberts, who delight with their palpable chemistry. Series director John Addis does his utmost across the eight episodes of season 1 to find the nuance within their relationship, especially when compared to how the two deal with other people when not together. A comedy stuffed full of well-observed gags, Still Up finds the humor in some of life’s more difficult moments. - Jake Hodges Watch on Apple TV+

'Strange Planet' (2023 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 82% | imdb: 6.4/10, strange planet.

Strange Planet is based on the webcomic by Nathan W. Pyle , and he and co-producer Dan Harmon ( Rick and Morty ) expand the concept of humanoid aliens trying to understand human culture into a whole world of delightfully wholesome bits. The show has a lot of fun pointing out the absurdity of the mundane aspects of our everyday life, like riding in an airplane, drinking alcohol, or gambling on sports. The animation perfectly translates the art style of the comic while also adding in some of that Harmon flavor to keep the connective tissue of the bits moving through the half-hour runtime. 'Platonic' (2023 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 93% | imdb: 7.2/10.

Rose Byrne ( Neighbors ) and Seth Rogen ( Sausage Party ) star in this non-romantic comedy about two childhood best friends that reconnect as adults in very different phases of their lives yet turn out to be just what the other needed. Byrne is Sylvia, a stay-at-home mom in a mid-life crisis, and Rogan plays Will, a recently divorced bar owner. Together, they are pure chaos, bringing out something new and messy in each other yet embracing this change from the lives they’ve come to resent. The comedy in this series is a nice mix of physical and situational, but the real draw is the authenticity of the slowly rebuilding friendship between the two leads. – Tauri Miller Watch on AppleTV+

'The Big Door Prize' (2023 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 92% | imdb: 6.4/10, the big door prize.

Based on the novel by M. O. Walsh , The Big Door Prize asks the question: What would you change about yourself if you truly, objectively knew your life’s potential? Executive producer and writer for Schitt's Creek David West Read adapts the themes and core of the book into a 10-episode series revolving around a mysterious and magical machine that predicts the destinies of anyone who uses it. Needless to say, this knowledge is enough to throw the residents of the small town it appears in into an existential crisis of life-changing proportions. Through the first season, Shrinking explores how this new outlook makes not only an impact on his patients but also himself. Featuring Harrison Ford ( 1923 ) , Jessica Williams ( Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ) , Lukita Maxwell , and Luke Tennie, Shrinking adds heart to the humor. – Yael Tygiel Watch on Apple TV+

From the creators of one of the longest-running sitcoms, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia , comes the workplace comedy Mythic Quest . The series brings a unique focus on gamer culture with a quirky ensemble of characters that has garnered a largely positive reception from the critics and audience. For a fun and geeky series, it's worth binge-watching Mythic Quest especially when it recently earned a renewal for a third and fourth season. Watch on Apple TV+

'Central Park' (2020 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 97% | imdb: 6.9/10, central park.

From the producers of Bob's Burgers comes another adult animated comedy series, Central Park , that follows the Tillerman-Hunter family who live in Edendale Castle in Central Park. The family includes the patriarch Owen ( Leslie Odom Jr. ) who is the park manager, his wife Paige ( Kathryn Hahn ) who is a journalist, and their kids, Molly ( Emmy Raver-Lampman ) and Cole ( Tituss Burgess ). The famous park comes under threat from the greedy business entrepreneur Bitsy Brandenham ( Stanley Tucci ) who wishes to turn the park into condos for her own personal and financial gain. It's up to the family to work together to save the park and their own home. With such a talented cast filled with quite a few Broadway stars, the animated series also incorporates musical numbers within the episodes to deliver the story. Overall, the series is a delightful romp in musical animation with another season on its way meaning it's a great opportunity to watch the show in preparation. Watch on Apple TV+

'Dickinson' (2019 - 2021)

Rotten tomatoes: 92% | imdb: 7.7/10.

This 19th-century era comedy-drama takes on a surreal and anachronistic tone in telling the story of the famous American poet, Emily Dickinson ( Hailee Steinfeld ). Instead of being a strictly historically accurate series, the show incorporates an invigorating twist of modern language and soundtracks . The unconventional casting of certain historical figures, including a majority of comedic actors such as John Mulaney as Henry David Thoreau, brings a refreshing interpretation of these people. The show even includes the historically theorized lesbian relationship between Emily and Sue Gilbert ( Ella Hunt ), which presented great LGBTQ+ representation that is rarely seen in period pieces. The themes within the series include the ubiquitous struggles of women with regard to gender, family, and society that still carry over from Dickinson's periodic setting to modern times. This bold series received critical acclaim and a large audience following for the unique execution of its periodic subject. It even won a Peabody Award for its notable originality and audacious writing as a series. Needless to say, this surprising show is deserving of being watched from its noble start to its sweet end. With a title like Schmigadoon! , it matches the show's wild premise of a couple, Josh ( Keegan-Michael Key ) and Melissa ( Cecily Strong ), who go on a backpacking trip only to get lost and discover the titular magical town where all of its residents are trapped in a 1940s Golden-Age style musical. Despite initially going on this backpacking trip to restore their relationship, the couple soon learns that their only way to leave the town is to find "true love". The musical comedy serves as a parody and homage to the great musicals from the 1940s with a stunning cast of Broadway talent including Kristen Chenoweth as Mildred Layton and Aaron Tveit as Danny Bailey. If you're a fan of vibrant musicals, this show is definitely up your alley, especially with a second season being confirmed. Watch on Apple TV+

'The Afterparty' (2022 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 92% | imdb: 7.3/10, the afterparty.

This series combines comedy and murder mystery together when Detective Danner ( Tiffany Haddish ) has to investigate the death of Xavier ( Dave Franco ) at a high school reunion afterparty. All the former classmates become suspects and unravel potential motives and connections as each episode follows a different character's account of the party. The ensemble is already packed with some major comedic actors to deliver hilarious quips despite the grave situation. The show also takes a genre-bending approach with each episode to correlate with the character's various perspectives like Yasper's ( Ben Schwartz ) musically styled account or Chelsea's ( Ilana Grazer ) explanation being shown like a psychological thriller. For an intriguing whodunit, this series should be checked out especially since it has already been renewed for a second season. Haddish is set to return to solve a new murder at a wedding with a new group of actors that have already been cast including Elizabeth Perkins ( Sharp Objects ), Ken Jeong ( Community ), and John Cho ( Harold and Kumar ). 'The Shrink Next Door' (2021)

Rotten tomatoes: 58% | imdb: 7.1/10, the shrink next door.

Based on real events and the 2019 podcast series of the same title by Joe Nocera , this dark comedy and psychological drama centers on the relationship between Marty Markowitz ( Will Ferrell ) and his psychiatrist, Dr. Ike Hershkopf ( Paul Rudd ). What starts off as a helpful connection for Marty to deal with his anxiety and grief turns into an exploitive manipulation led by Ike. Marty's sister, Phyllis Shapiro ( Kathryn Hahn ), grows concerned for her brother's wellbeing as his new shrink pulls him into a destructive direction over the course of 30 years that threatens Marty's finances and relationship with the family. With huge leading stars like Ferrell and Rudd, it's already a drawing card that will interest audiences. However, unlike their previous collaborations on Anchorman , the two portray a darker and more disturbing tone, especially when it comes to the abusive professional relationship between Marty and Ike. This limited series carries twists and turns at every corner along with notable performances from Ferrell, Rudd, and Hahn. Watch on Apple TV+

'Trying' (2020 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 93% | imdb: 8.0/10.

Moving to a UK setting, Trying focuses on the story of a couple, Jason ( Rafe Spall ) and Nikki ( Esther Smith ), who wish to have a child. Due to fertility issues, they instead look into the option of adopting a child which calls on the support of their friends and families to navigate the challenges that come with the adoption process. This romantic comedy treats an otherwise touchy topic of infertility with care and respect while finding humor in the absurdities of the adoption process. Similar to Ted Lasso , Trying strives to hold a cheerful tone through the misadventures that Jason and Nikki go through while also presenting the emotional beats that come with this kind of real-life dilemma. For a heartfelt slice-of-life comedy, this show is perfect. Watch on Apple TV+

'Physical' (2021 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 83% | imdb: 7.3/10.

This next series will take you back to the 80s with neon spandex and the fitness sensation of aerobics. Physical tells the story of Sheila Rubin ( Rose Byrne ), a housewife living in 80s San Diego whose personal struggles with body image are remedied by her discovery in aerobics exercise. After being introduced to the activity by the class instructor Bunny ( Della Saba ), Sheila is instantly hooked and goes to twisted lengths to continue her new passion. In conjunction with her husband Danny's ( Rory Scovel ) new bid to run for local office after being fired from his job, Sheila works hard to make money and builds a new empire through her idea of home workout videos. The dark comedy-drama builds on such a niche premise that results in unpredictable drama and nostalgia. The series even dares to tackle the issues of eating disorders and body dysmorphia that Sheila suffers from. Watch on Apple TV+

'Acapulco' (2021 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 93% | imdb: 7.7/10, acapulco (2021).

Inspired by the 2017 comedy film How to Be a Latin Lover , the Spanish/English bilingual series Acapulco focuses on Maximo Gallardo Ramos ( Eugenio Derbez, ) who is a successful Mexican entrepreneur in Malibu who hosts his nephew Hugo ( Raphael Alejandro ) for his birthday. The present-day Maximo decides to tell his nephew about his own rags-to-riches story, which started when he first worked at Las Colinas, the most popular resort in Acapulco in 1984. The episodes follow the younger Maximo ( Enrique Arrizon ) and the challenges he faces while working at the famous establishment. The show is another charming and feel-good comedy with the younger Maximo being an ambitious and well-intentioned protagonist in the colorful 80s setting of the Mexican luxury resort. It maintains a cheerful tone with Maximo's episodic shenanigans around the resort but also addresses the sobering reality and difference of class privilege between the resort's workers and rich guests. Altogether, Acapulco is a sweet and smart comedy with a brilliant cast composed of a majority of Hispanic talent. Watch on Apple TV+

'Little America' (2020 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 97% | imdb: 7.6/10, little america.

This feel-good anthology series focuses on characters with different immigrant stories that reveal their experiences of being in America. Based on Epic Magazine's collection of the same name, each episode is dedicated to a true, untold story of an immigrant. The stories range from poignant ones such as Kabir ( Suraj Sharma ), an Indian boy who was left to run a hotel after his parents were deported when he was 12 years old, to inspiring tales such as Beatrice ( Kemiyondo Coutinho ), a Ugandan woman who wishes to follow her passion in baking. The series holds an uplifting tone in portraying the funny anecdotes and human moments in these experiences that can be relatable to the audience no matter our ethnicity, sexuality, or gender. This profound series is ready to stream for some joyful laughs and even some tear-jerking moments. Watch on Apple TV+

'Loot' (2022 - Present)

The betrayal leads Molly into a self-destructive spiral and a sense of aimlessness until one of her charitable organizations reaches out to help her start a new life while putting her $87 billion settlement to good use. Set as a workplace comedy, the series also has a remarkable cast playing the organization's employees, including Michaela Jaé Rodriguez ( Pose ) as Sofia, Joel Kim Booster ( Fire Island ) as Nicholas, and Ron Funches ( Hoops ) as Howard . Jennifer Connelly's Dark Matter Character Improves On The Book In 1 Huge Way

Apple tv+'s new sci-fi thriller series dominates streaming popularity chart, young sheldon finale continued big bang theory's true sheldon soulmate disrespect (it isn't amy).

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Apple TV+'s Dark Matter.

  • Dark Matter on Apple TV+ is a fresh take on multiverse travel, reminiscent of the indie film Coherence.
  • Both Dark Matter and Coherence explore complex quantum concepts in tangible ways for viewers.
  • Unlike Dark Matter, Coherence's psychological depth and unique plot contribute to its higher ratings.

A new multiverse drama on Apple TV+ is not only an incredible sci-fi series in its own right but also reminds one to watch another highly acclaimed indie movie of the same genre. Even though some recent additions to Apple TV+'s sci-fi catalog, like Constellation , did not perform as well as anticipated, the streamer continues to churn out one sci-fi series after another. Its latest addition is a book adaptation that riffs on familiar ideas seen in several other multiverse-centric films and shows while bringing some of its unique twists to well-known tropes in sci-fi.

Since stories unfolding across multiverses have the opportunity to explore endless narrative possibilities, many recent movies and television have adopted interdimensional travel as a plot tool to explore philosophical ideas surrounding human mortality and the consequences of one's choices. Unfortunately, not all movies and shows that focus on alternate realities and timelines execute their ideas in a way that is captivating for audiences. Fortunately, the new Apple TV+ series avoids most pitfalls of the sci-fi subgenre and even seems reminiscent of a similar acclaimed flick.

Based on Blake Crouch's novel of the same name, Dark Matter (2024) is Apple TV+'s latest sci-fi series starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

Apple TV+'s Dark Matter Is Reminiscent Of 2013's Coherence

Coherence & dark matter adopt similar mulitversal travel rules.

Although Apple TV+'s Dark Matter is based on an original Blake Crouch book of the same name, it seems to share many intriguing similarities with the 2013 sci-fi thriller Coherence . For starters, both the movie and the show cleverly use quantum mechanics concepts like quantum decoherence and the Observer effect as primary narrative devices for their storylines. However, despite adopting these complex concepts, the show and the movie present them in a way that makes them tangible to viewers. Even the multiverse travel rules in both are quite similar.

Dark Matter and Coherence also explore the eerie possibility of two versions of the same character landing in the same universe.

Coherence does not feature interdimensional travel devices, like "The Box" from Dark Matter . While the characters in Dark Matter have to follow an intricate process that begins with injecting a brain-numbing drug, the ones in Coherence merely walk down a street during a comet's flyby to access a new alternate reality. However, the characters in both do not get to decide which universe they will end up in. They have to try their luck and step onto the other side, hoping the universe they will end up in will favor them. Dark Matter and Coherence also explore the eerie possibility of two versions of the same character landing in the same universe.

Why Coherence's Reviews Are Better Than Dark Matter's

Coherence is more unique and plot-heavy than dark matter.

Almost two weeks after the release of its first two episodes, Dark Matter boasts an above-average Rotten Tomatoes critics' score of 78%, with a "Certified Fresh" rating. However, despite dabbling with similar themes and sci-fi ideas, Coherence boasts an even more impressive Rotten Tomatoes critics' score of 88%. Even when it comes to the show and the movie's audience scores, Dark Matter sits at 72%, while Coherence outshines it with a score of 81%. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons Coherence has better reviews is that it adds a layer of psychological depth to its multiversal narrative.

Dark Matter , for the most part, sticks to the conventions of the sci-fi sub-genre and walks through the adventures — and misadventures — of a man traveling across universes to find his family. Coherence , on the other hand, confines its setting to a suburban home and focuses more on the growing paranoia between its characters. Owing to its limited budget, Coherence barely uses VFX, running purely on the strength of its ideas and performances , which immerses audiences in its puzzle box of mysteries and cosmic confusion. However, despite having relatively lower critical ratings, the Apple TV+ show is worth watching.

While Coherence can presently be streamed on Amazon Prime Video in the US, Dark Matter is airing on Apple TV+.

Dark Matter (2024)

Based on his novel of the same name, Dark Matter is a sci-fi drama-thriller television series created for Apple TV+ by Blake Crouch. The series follows a physicist who is kidnapped and thrown into an alternate reality where he witnesses one potential path his life could have taken. However, he learns that the lives of his family are in jeopardy by an alternate version of himself.
