What people love about Laos Tours

Absolutely loved Laos although would have liked to have spent more time in Luang Prabang. Our first guide was fantastic and so incredibly knowledgeable. For three star accommodation I could not fault it. Unless you particularly want to see the countryside, I would highly recommend to fly like my friends did to Vientiane, as the itinerary lied. The trip was not the 8 hours like stated, rather closer to 12 hours. There were limited English speaking people and the communication was limited therefore I was unsure what was going on at times regarding the arrival time to Vientiane. Furthermore it was not explained what our food voucher was for and there were not toilet break between the 2pm lunch break and the arrival time in Vientiane over 5 hours later. Don't be deceived either by the 'Deluxe' bus as it is 'Deluxe' 3rd world style. No biggie however had the most amazing hotel on the Mekong River, overlooking Thailand however the internet was non existent unless you were in the reception or restaurant. Compared to the communication from Hoi An Express during my Vietnam tour, I found the communication in Laos was very limited. There was no communication regarding my transfer between cities and it was something I was required to chase up myself.
The guides were both excellent, very engaging, caring and very knowledgeable; the organization was in some respects a bit confused, in one case regarding how a local payment was to be made and in another instance there was a request for some official Lao document of which I had no awareness. Overall, however, the experience was excellent. Thank you
My husband and I went to Laos on mild sunny days. This place is almost pristine and we were close to nature. The temples here are wonderful and the views are amazing. The trip was interesting and smooth thanks to the Realistic Asia team.

Hoi An Express

"I have nothing but accolades for the services of TourRadar with all email questions answered promptly and with the complete information seeked. The tour of Laos and Cambodia was organised locally through Hoi An Express and I have nothing but accolades for their service which was excellent, impressive local guides and driver at each location. The hotel locations were centrally and conveniently located, very clean, friendly helpful staff and all amenities as expected. I had not heard of TourRadar before 'surfing' the internet and finding this trip - I know now, that for future trips, I will most certainly look through trips that Tour Radar has to offer and will also be advising all my single girlfriends to do so also.

Buy fresh food from the nearby market before continuing to  Muang Soune , which is located 65km from Nong Khiaw by the bank of Nam Ou river. Arriving at the village, you will be welcomed by the host family. Observe the life of local people before learning more about the village from the  village chief at his house  and having  lunch at the house of the host family . In the afternoon, you can choose to either relax or enjoy  agricultural activities  such as rice planting and harvesting in surrounding rice fields (depending on the season); traditional fishing techniques (you can sample your catch for dinner); walk around the farm and rice field. You may wish to have a dip in the inviting Nam Ou river, or join and help the host with preparing the dinner which you can learn more about Lao cuisine. Before dinner, join a  private Baci ceremony , held by the elders of the village. The Baci ceremony is a traditional ritual of the Lao people which expresses the spirituality of the country and is a highly memorable experience and a deep insight into Lao culture. During dinner, folk tales will be told by the host family and translated by your guide. Day 7: Muang Soune - Nam Ou (Breakfast, Lunch) Nam Ou Relaxing Experience Rise early to admire the beautiful sunrise over the Nam Ou river and the nearby mountains. After breakfast, learn  traditional fishing techniques  by the stunning Nam Ou river, and take a  boat trip  to explore the surrounding areas. Arrive at the village at 11:00 to return to Luang Prabang. Make a stop at  Ban Vanglae , home to the lovely  Nam Ou Riverside Resort , where you can spend the rest of the day to relax by the inviting pool or walk around the nearby village before resting for the night. Day 8: Nam Ou - Departure from Luang Prabang (Breakfast) Free and Easy Return to Luang Prabang. Free till departure transfer to Luang Prabang airport for homebound flight.

9 days 8 nights vientiane, vang vieng, phonsavanh, xieng khuang + luang prabang tour  (cashmere package).

Explore the laid-back capital of Vientiane, the exciting Vang Vieng, the mysterious Plain of Jars, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang. Over 9 days, create unforgettable moments by observing the morning alms giving, enjoying panoramic view from the peak of Phousi Hill, reveling in the leisure cruise ride on the mighty Mekong river, soaking in the amazing scenery at Vang Vieng and exploring the famous Kuang Si waterfalls.

Day 1: Arrival in Vientiane (Dinner) Welcome to Vientiane Upon arrival at Vientiane airport, our local representative will meet and welcome you. After check-in at your hotel, you can spend some time at your own leisure, such as taking a stroll and explore the city center, watching the locals go about their life. Enjoy a welcome dinner at a  local restaurant with traditional dance and folk songs , the best way to experience Lao culture. Day 2: Vientiane (Breakfast, Lunch) Vientiane's Highlights Tour Start your day with a visit to  Wat Si Muang , which is very famous for its supernatural power. Proceed to  Buddha Park , an enchanting collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures on the Mekong Riverside meadow, close to the Friendship Bridge. There are approximately 200 religious images dating back over 500 years, which were created by a mysterious monk spreading his philosophy on life and revealing his ideas about the universe. In the afternoon, see the major sights of the capital; including the oldest  Wat Sisaket , the temple with thousands of miniature Buddha statues and the former royal temple of  Wat Prakeo , which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. On the way to Lao’s national icon, the famous and sacred structure of  That Luang Stupa , stop by to take pictures of the imposing  Patuxay Monument , which is well-known as Vientiane’s own Arc de Triumph. End the day with a spectacular sunset view over the Mekong River. Day 3: Vientiane - Vang Vieng (Breakfast, Lunch) Vang Vieng Nature Experience Marvel at the breathtaking scenery as you pass through spectacular countryside towards the mountainous region. En route, visit the busy and colorful market of  KM52  where various hill tribes gather to trade goods and buy provisions. If time permits, make a short photo stop at  Hin Heup bridge  and the  fish market in Ban Tha Heua . Upon arrival at  Vang Vieng , nestled on a bend of the  Nam Song River , be amazed at its stunning scenery with  limestone outcrops  remaining unspoiled, despite recent developments with the advent of tourism. In the afternoon, pass through  paddy field areas  to head to  Tham Phoukham caves , where you will be greeted by the most beautiful and famous limestone cavern, surrounded by natural forests. Along the way, explore the local cultures by greeting the villagers and learning about their lifestyle. You can take a refreshing swim in the natural pool in front of the caves or explore the nearby area, before transferring back to town via a leisurely  boat ride  along the Nam Song River while admiring the sun setting behind the mountains. Day 4: Vang Vieng - Phonsavanh (Breakfast, Lunch) Vang Vieng Scenic Experience Explore the  cave of Tham Jang , which was used in the early 19 th  century in defense against the Chinese invaders, and now the most famous attraction in Vang Vieng. Cross the river to  Ban Phathau , a pleasant village where you will discover the different local lifestyles. Start your expedition to  Xieng Khuang , of which the roads are well-paved along the way for a smooth journey. Pass through stunning landscape with a mixture of steep terraced fields and hill villages and make a few photo stops at some small hill tribe villages en route. Each hill tribe village in Laos has a different vibe; some are more prosperous than others, but all have plenty of life. Along the way, stop by the peak of  Phou Phiengpha  to admire the panoramic view over the mountainous area. Take a drive a little further to the T-Junction in Phoukhoun, before taking the right turn onto Xieng Khuang province. From there, the road will get a bit harder as it includes zigzagging mountain paths. Make some stops along the way to visit the local hill tribe villages or to stretch your legs. Day 5: Phonsavanh - Xieng Khuang (Breakfast, Lunch) Plain of Jars and Muang Khoun Experience Explore  Plain of Jars , a huge archaeological complex littered with 2000-year-old stone jars that are up to 3 or 4m tall. While it seems that they were carved into boulders, their true origin remains a mystery. Discover the 3 sites of Plain of Jars and some villages where you can observe village life. Close to Site 3 which is the most impressive with over 150 jars, you will visit  Ban Xiengdi  where there is a small monastery with Buddha images. On the way back, you will pass by areas that were important battlefields during the American secret war. Today, you can still see bomb craters from that time. Plain of Jars had been heavily bombed during the war, so you need to respect all the signs and stay along the defined trails due to bombs, UXO and landmines. In the afternoon, enjoy a half-day trip to  Muang Khoun , one place in the old provincial capital that was not destroyed by the American bombings during the secret war. Muang Khoun is also home to the unique sitting giant Buddha as well of some old pagodas that lie in ruins. The foundation and columns of Wat Pia Wat are still standing and close to this site, there is also an old 30m stupa constructed in the Lan Xang/Lanna period.  Day 6: Xieng Khuang - Luang Prabang (Breakfast, Lunch) Xieng Khuang Village Experience Rise early to visit the  Central Market of Phonsavanh  to watch the different hill tribe people barter and exchange merchandise. After breakfast at the hotel, take the direct transfer to Luang Prabang. Along the way, make numerous photo stops and enjoy the splendid scenery of mountains and forest. Drop by  Tham Pra , which served as a hospital during the Indochina War before arriving in Phonsavanh. Visit  Ban Phoudam village , where you can see the two hill tribe minorities of H’Mong and Khamu living in harmony, before driving to the photo stop at  Ban Kiew Nya  for the panoramic view prior to reaching Luang Prabang. Day 7: Luang Prabang (Breakfast, Lunch) Luang Prabang's Highlights Experience Begin the day at the  Royal Palace Museum , a royal palace that was the residence of the Laos royal family and now a museum that hosts a range of interesting artifacts. Take a  leisurely cruise upstream on the Mekong River , which also gives us a  breathtaking view of the tranquil countryside , and head to  Ban Xang Hai , a village famous for lao-lao, the traditional distilled rice whiskey. Continue to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves , two linked caves set high above the river and crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. Upon return to the city, pay a visit to the magnificent  Wat Xiengthong , with its roofs sweeping low to the ground representing classical Laotian architecture. Learn about Laos’ many ethnic cultures at  Traditional Arts & Ethnology Center  (closed on Mondays). Admire the sunset at the peaceful  Wat Prabath  before immersing in the bustling atmosphere of the  Night Market , where you can find a lovely selection of handmade textiles made by local and hilltribe people. Day 8: Luang Prabang (Breakfast, Lunch) Luang Prabang's Nature Experience Join the most sacred tradition of Laos, the  daily morning alm-giving , which dates to the 14 th  century. More than 200 Buddhist monks depart from various temples to gather their daily meal from the faithful residents sitting quietly on the streets. Following that, experience local life by visiting the temporary  morning market  near the former Royal Palace. The locals gather to barter their day’s catch from rice and vegetable to fish and chicken. After breakfast at the hotel, ascend the 329 steps to the top of  Phousi Hill  for a panoramic view of the city and the  Mekong River . If time permits, visit  UXO Visitor Center  (closed on Saturdays and Sundays) where you can find the documentation about the secret war in Laos. Transfer to the beautiful  Kuang Si waterfalls , the biggest in the Luang Prabang area with three tiers leading to a 50-metre drop into spectacular azure pools before flowing downstream. The pools also make great swimming holes and are very popular with both tourists and locals. Spend the rest of the afternoon having a refreshing dip in the cool clear water or hiking to the top of the waterfalls. If time allows, walk to the nearby village of  Ban Thapene , and explore the hidden waterfalls which are rarely visited by other tourists, and make a short visit to the  Bear Rescue Center , which houses a couple of dozen animals rescued from the hands of poachers and traffickers. End your day at  Ock Pop Tock Living Craft Center  to admire top-quality fabrics produced by weavers, spinners and batik makers, and hopefully catch the sunset as this is also one of the best spots to admire the sunset in Luang Prabang. Day 9: Departure from Luang Prabang (Breakfast, Lunch) Elephant Experience After breakfast at the hotel, your car and guide will take you to Elephant Village. On arrival, you will be welcome and greeting by the Camp Manager and participate in short briefing. After enjoying the impressive experience of approx. 30-minute elephant ride on the neck; take a return boat trip to the  Tad Sae Waterfall  and enjoy some time in the clear water. Have buffet lunch (served with coffee or tea and drinking water) at the Elephant Village Restaurant before proceeding to pay a visit to the  tomb of the 19 th  century French explorer, Henri Mouhot ; the first European to rediscover Angkor Wat and the Royal Kingdom of Luang Prabang. Take the departure transfer to Luang Prabang airport for homebound flight.

Laos - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

A trip to Laos is nothing less than penetrating to a different time, where everything is simpler, and time just seems to slow down.

Imagine visiting a country where the locals are still curious to know more about foreigners. Think of a place where time seems to stop, stress disappears and your heartbeat feels like it has slowed down a notch to adjust to the slow-paced lifestyle. This is what every trip to Laos feels like. Get away from the cities and enjoy off-the-beaten-track holidays to come in touch with the real Laos. With beautiful limestone cliffs and the enchanting Mekong River as your backdrop, you have the perfect setting for picture-perfect holidays. Add village homestays and spectacular natural beauty into the mix and life really begins to start feeling like a fairytale.

Tour Highlights

  • Climb to the top of Mount Phou Si
  • Swim in the turquoise-coloured lagoon of Tham Poukham Cave
  • Discover the ruins of Vat Phou in Champasak
  • Raft down the Mekong River
  • Stroll through Buddha Park in Vientiane
  • Take a dip in the Kuang Si Falls
  • Explore the Pak Ou Caves

Travel Tips

  • Fast and reliable internet can be hard to come by in Laos. To be on the safe side, print your hotel and transport confirmations ahead of time, and carry a physical map.
  • While many Asian countries encourage you to eat with your hands, this is not the case in Laos. Use chopsticks if you can.
  • When eating out, be careful of “happy pizzas” or “happy shakes”. These foods are “happy” because they are laced with drugs, normally mushrooms or opium.
  • Even on hot days, be sure to bring something to cover your shoulders and knees for visiting monasteries and other holy sites.
  • Laotians really value politeness. Be a respectful tourist. Don’t take pictures of locals without asking (especially monks), avoid pointing, and always take your shoes off before entering a temple or someone’s home.
  • Things run a bit slower in Laos - that goes for the people, the service, and the public transportation. Kick back, relax, and count time as the locals do.

Laos has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Laos before planning your tour.

Why choosing Laos? This seems familiar questions to any visitor who has never been here. In fact, Laos is one of the most isolated parts and only landlocked country in South East Asia. The best of Laos

The serenity of Laos.

From many outside viewers, this country is a total sleeper and under the radar as it lacks of tourism marketing to international markets. With more than 2 million tons of bombs over the country by Americans during the Vietnam War as part of a covert attempt to wrest power from communist forces, Laos is also the most heavily bombed nation in history today.

As a result, Laos becomes much undeveloped than its neighboring countries. The infrastructure in Laos has not been setup for mass tourism, taxis are not abundant and road conditions are still challenging to visitors which take long journey from place to place.

If Vietnam is famous for Halong Bay; Cambodia is for the Angkor complex; Myanmar for Bagan’s plains, and Thailand for pristine beaches and islands, of course this is just one of key spots among many other attractions of these countries, so what is the best of Laos to visit?

Yes, the advantage of Laos is that it is far less touristy which gives Laos unique charm and authentic . For those who love laid back atmosphere without too much crowds and a bit adventure, this is place for you. As a beautiful untouched country, Laos seems to be quiet and secluded from the rest of the world without many attractions compared to Vietnam, Thailand or Cambodia, but it feels fresh and vibrant.

The pace of life is slow so it is good place to relax . The Lao people are simple, friendly and just living their life. Laos culture is diversified with many ethnic minorities and amazingly representing Buddhism which retains its oldest tradition .

In addition, Laos really has many other things to offer, just that they don’t get proportional marketing. North Laos like Luang Namtha, Phongsaly ,…are perfect places for trekking, especially to remote ethnic villages and experience homestay. Visiting Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi for stunning scenery.

Luang Prabang is a beautiful and richly filled with sacred temples. Experience alms giving ceremony in the early morning is great, when Buddhist monks and novices walking in the road to collect food from locals.

Heading south offers gorgeous natural vistas to take in. Visiting the waterfalls around the coffee-rich Boloven Plateau ; or the UNESCO world heritage site of Wat Phou or stunning flows of the Mekong around 4000 islands (Si Phan Don) .

There are also many National Protected Areas (Nam Ha NPA is one of best known) where gives many opportunities for trekking in the jungles or see the rare wildlife there.

Of course, tasty Laos food cannot be missed in the trip as well.

best time to visit Laos

The best time of your travel can be from November to February when the weather is the most pleasant.

Laos has a typical tropical monsoon climate including dry season from November to April and wet season from May to October with the variations in temperature. Among these seasons, the hottest period comes to March and April (end months of dry season leading to wet season) and early start of wet season in May, June.

During wet season (or rainy season), an average rainfall can reach 1,300 to 2,300 mm (50 to 90 in) with the heaviest rainfall in August & September, especially on the Bolaven Plateau, Champasak Province in the South. The average temperature is generally around 27 °C (80 °F).

In dry season, the average temperatures in the cool months (December – February) vary between 16 and 21 °C (60 and 70 °F) with the coolest month coming to January. In March and April, the temperature increases higher over 32 °C (90 °F) with April as the hottest month of year when Lao New Year and water festival occurs.

In fact, you can actually visit Laos all-year-round. However, the best time of your travel can be from November to February when the weather is the most pleasant . In the far north of Laos, the weather even gets pretty cold in the evenings. Of course, this is also high/peak season, so prepare for more crowds with higher expenses, especially during Christmas/New Year Eve or Lao New Year. The early booking is highly recommended to guarantee services during this time.

While planning a holiday to Laos, it is not easy to decide the best tour package as right choice of travelers. As the main hubs of Laos, your trip can normally start either from Luang Prabang or Vientiane with various trip length (less, within or more than a week) as well as travel styles (culture and history, adventure, luxury), absolutely depending on your interest, time & budget.

The halong bay cruise was a wow experience. The guide, cruise and food were really good. Overall all the tour guides were really helpful and knowledgable. I feel the time given for bana hills was little less. They should accommodate 1-2hrs more for that trip as there is a lot to explore.

Iamanandsagar's 9 days trip to Vietnam

We had a wonderful time in Vietnam and the trip was organised fairly well. Apart from 2 bad experiences. I will list them down, but first happy experiences. Our trip was for 9 days and we had traveled with our 5 year old daughter. So everything was customised as per her interest. Mr Tony from wonderscape was very helpful in understanding our requirements and arranging the trip accordingly. A big thanks to him for a very friendly attitude throughout the booking and trip duration. I would definitely recommend to choose wonderscape if any of you plan your trips in the future. Now 2 not so happy experiences: 1. Our pickup on the day of arrival was delayed. We reached Hanoi at 2:30 Am, but there was no pick up person. We had to wait for almost 90 min to be picked and dropped to the hotel. As we were tired and no sleep, it was a difficult time to manage our kid at that time. However, I appreciate Mr Tony for answering my call at midnight and arranging for a pick up. This shows their commitment. 2. We had booked a boutique cruise for a luxury experience. However, the bathroom we got had water drainage issues and the entire bathroom got flooded, this was a bad experience. Unfortunately the cruise crew did not do much even after bringing this to their notice. Apart from these 2 issues, we had a very plesent trip overall. Thanks to Tony once again.

Gladcaeiro's 6 days trip to Vietnam

Thanks to Karishma for organizing and preparing a good Vietnam itinary for our family. It was a fantastic and memorable experience. Food and communication was a slight issue in Vietnam- hardly anyone speaks English and the food is mostly bland, but overall experience would be a 9/10. Thanks for the superb organization and co-ordination in terms of internal touring, stay and transportation.

Somnathkotal's 7 days trip to Cambodia

Over all experience is good. Travel agents are very supportive throughout the tour. Most of places we found vegetarian food, so that is very well arranged by travel agency. Only at the cruise experience was not so great, we had given promises by travel agency that the cruise is being upgraded, but it was small boat with only 25 guest and we didn't have private balcony and we saw all very good looking cruise arround us with private balcony, so don't feel so great there. Also at da nang our trip starts at 3:30 pm afternoon but we had to check out early at 12 and for 3 & half hours we were sitting in lobby in high humidity and had nothing to do arround. I think these things travel agency can do better.

Rohit's 14 days trip to Cambodia

Excellent services provided by Realistic Asia. All the arrangements were punctual and well coordinated. The cabs / buses were clean and comfortable. All details and costings had been worked out beforehand. There were NO hidden charges. The pickup timings for the next day were re-confirmed the previous day. Very professional agency. We are very happy to state that we did not have a single hitch anywhere.
