Louisville Distilleries

Once considered the “Wall Street of Whiskey” Louisville has been a spirits soaked civilization ever since Evan Williams first marketed his whiskey to the city in 1783. Up until the 1920’s, a portion of Main Street was known as “Whiskey Row” because of the more than 50 spirits-related businesses that were operating there at the time. Thirteen years of Prohibition nearly decimated the industry, but now almost a century later, Louisville is brimming with Bourbon experiences.

3 Amazing Urban Bourbon Trail Distillery Tours: A Local’s Guide to Kentucky

Join me in as we travel Louisville’s “Urban” and Craft Bourbon Trail, a journey through the heart of a city synonymous with fine Kentucky Bourbon.

Louisville’s “Urban” + Craft Bourbon Trail

Whiskey Row Bourbon

Louisville’s Bourbon Trail is home to the intersection of the sophisticated city, remarkable culinary delights, and some of the finest Whiskey in the world…Kentucky Bourbon. As a Louisville native, I’ve watched as Bourbonism has transformed our fine city into “The Place to Be” if you want to experience America’s Native Spirit, Bourbon Whiskey.

I am going to share with you the insider’s guide to exploring the Urban Bourbon Trail. First, a quick history of the forces that collided and gave us Bourbon.

Quick History of Bourbon

This transformative journey, part of what we now celebrate as the Louisville Urban Bourbon Trail, started with farmers turning corn into bourbon. In the 1700’s before modern equipment provided long-term storage of crops like corn farmers had a few choices: use the corn, let it go bad, or make whiskey.

Take a guess what they did.

Right! They started making whiskey.

Whiskey was shipped down the Ohio River to New Orleans where the patrons in the French Quarter enjoyed the fine spirits that aged on the barge trip down the mighty Mississippi. When the whiskey arrived it was a hit! As patrons asked about the whiskey, it was known as the whiskey from Bourbon County (Kentucky).

Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail

Besides really fast race horses, southern hospitality, the twin spires, and baseball bats, Kentucky is home to America’s only native spirit…Bourbon Whiskey. The Bourbon Trail serves as the showcase to the large and small companies that produce upwards of 95% of all bourbon whiskey production in the county!

First, let’s define the Kentucky Bourbon trail.

I refer to the Bourbon Trail as the trail throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky that leads visitors through our rolling bluegrass hills to some world-class distilleries. Some of my favorites include Maker’s Mark , Woodford Reserve , and Wild Turkey .

While the Urban Bourbon Trail includes all the distilleries located inside the greater Louisville metro area. Over time, the urban trail expanded to include some fine dining establishments and bars mixing up fantastic bourbon cocktails. When you visit Louisville don’t miss out on trying The Seelbach at the signature Seelbach hotel.

As you embark on this journey, don’t forget to grab your FREE Ubran Bourbon Passport, an essential companion for anyone exploring the Louisville Urban Bourbon Trail.

The Passport is a downloadable App that is perfect to grab on your Uber ride from the airport to your hotel. The Passport helps visitors navigate the 40+ bars and distilleries on the Urban Bourbon Trail.

Pro Tip: Visit 6 participating locations on the trail and earn a free Urban Bourbon Trailblazer t-shirt!

The Craft Bourbon Trail in Kentucky is a unique journey through the state’s smaller, artisanal bourbon distilleries, offering a more intimate and detailed look into the bourbon-making process. Travelers can explore these lesser-known distilleries, each with its unique style and approach to bourbon production, set in picturesque rural countryside and urban settings. This trail is perfect for bourbon enthusiasts looking to experience a diverse range of flavors and learn about the craft behind one of America’s most beloved spirits.

Finally, the Bourbon District represents about 15 blocks along Louisville’s Main Street that include many awesome distilleries, bourbon bars, and fantastic southern cookin’ restaurants.

The 3 Amazing Distillery Tours in Greater Louisville

Bourbon Distillery

Dive into the rich heritage and nuanced flavors of Louisville’s bourbon culture. Starting with the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, journey through storied distilleries, each offering a unique glimpse into the world of bourbon. From interactive tours to exclusive tastings, these distilleries are not just stops on a trail; they’re gateways to a deeper appreciation of America’s native spirit.

Visit the Urban Bourbon Pioneer: Evan Williams

Our first stop on the Louisville Urban Bourbon Trail is the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience , a cornerstone of this spirited journey.

Interactive Journey: Discover the transformation of corn to whiskey and its journey from the Ohio River to New Orleans. This isn’t just a tour; it’s a journey through Evan Williams’ influential past.

Exclusive Insights: Witness the magic in their small distillation room, producing one exquisite barrel per day. This immersive experience offers a refreshing change from typical tours.

Tasting Adventure: Conclude your tour in a Louisville-themed tasting room, complete with a secret trap door for the whiskey samples. Relish four distinct styles of Evan Williams bourbon and whiskey.

Tour Options Include:

  • Trailblazing Experience: Kick off your urban bourbon adventure at Evan Williams, the original pioneer on the trail. Immerse yourself in the history that shaped the bourbon we know and love today.

Convenient Location: Easy parking options are available in lots, garages, and street parking.

Join us at Evan Williams for an unforgettable start to your urban bourbon journey. Let’s raise a glass to history and taste!

Discover the Essence of Stitzel-Weller Distillery

Just a short drive from the bustling Bourbon District, Stitzel-Weller Distillery offers a serene contrast to the urban and industrial neighborhood that now houses this distillery.

Hidden Gem in Shively: Nestled 5 miles south of Louisville, Stitzel-Weller Distillery, home to Blade & Bow Bourbon, stands as a green haven amidst the urban sprawl. It’s a delightful contrast to the industrial surroundings.

Timeless Retreat: Entering Stitzel-Weller is like stepping into a bygone era, a refreshing change from the city’s rush. It’s a preserved piece of history amidst modernity.

Legacy of Excellence: This distillery, once the home of Pappy Van Winkle, showcases a beautifully restored venue, echoing a rich bourbon legacy.

A Contrast to Technology: While Evan Williams dazzles with its tech-driven tours, Stitzel-Weller offers a more traditional, hands-on exploration of bourbon making.

A Springtime Marvel: Visiting in March, we witnessed the rebirth of nature, adding a special charm to the distillery’s picturesque setting.

Tour Choices:

  • The Stitzel-Weller Experience: At $25, this tour offers an engaging insight into the distillery’s past and present – our personal favorite.
  • A Taste of History: For $30, embark on a 30-minute journey tasting renowned bourbons including Blade & Bow, I W Harper, and Bulleit.
  • Progressive Walking Tour: Priced at $65, this tour is a bourbon aficionado’s dream, featuring a walk through the distillery’s special spots and a chance to taste bourbon directly from the barrel.

Stitzel-Weller Distillery is not just a place, but an experience that intertwines history with the art of bourbon. Ready for a journey through time?

Kentucky Artisan Distillery: Where Dreams Turn Into Bourbon

Kentucky Artisan Distillery

A little further from the main hustle of the Bourbon District, Kentucky Artisan Distillery offers a unique stop on our Louisville Urban Bourbon Trail exploration. Founder Steve Thompson built his career in the bourbon industry and KAD was the cumulation of his life’s work…a distillery that could turn visitors’ dreams into their barrel of bourbon whiskey.

Unique Location: Just 15 miles east of downtown Louisville, the Kentucky Artisan Distillery stands out in the old Crestwood Ice Cream building. It’s a place where visitors can “bottle their dreams.”

Intimate Touring Experience: Enjoy the distillery’s laid-back atmosphere on a tour that feels almost private, perfect for small groups like ours of 4 or 5 people.

Major Producer of Jefferson’s Bourbon: KAD proudly serves as one of the primary contract distillers of Jefferson’s Bourbon. This fine bourbon ages in Oldham County before setting off on a cruise around the world.

Locally Sourced Excellence: Kentucky Artisans prides itself on sourcing fresh corn and rye from local farms within a few miles, ensuring the freshest ingredients for their bourbon.

Historical Equipment Display: Explore an impressive collection of traditional bourbon-making equipment, a true homage to the spirit’s storied past. Cool Fact: KAD fills barrels from the top to give the whiskey more surface area to spread across! I cannot recall other distilleries taking this approach.

Tour Options:

  • Distillery Tour with Tasting: Step into the shoes of a master distiller. Go behind the scenes to uncover the craft of fine bourbon making.
  • KAD Experience: Ideal for those short on time. Enjoy a tasting session paired with captivating stories about the distillery. Steve offered me the white glove treatment on my recent KAD Experience!

Kentucky Artisan Distillery isn’t just a visit; it’s an exploration of bourbon’s heart and soul. Experience this hidden gem and savor the spirit of Kentucky.

Where to Stay on the Bourbon Trail

Louisville is home to some amazing hotels including many flagship brands like Marriott, Omni, Hilton, and more. We also have a growing number of luxurious niche concepts like Hotel Genevieve , 21c Hotel + Museum , The Belleweather Hotel , and more.

Here are several I recommend based on staying there.

Hotel Distil: A Toast to Luxury

Hotel Distil is really when you want to treat yourself with some luxury style and comfort. It’s right in the heart of Louisville so you will have easy access everywhere. The service is exceptional, so you will be able to fully relax. It’s the right combination of modern luxury and rich history in the Louisville area.

Omni: Elegance in Every Stay

Omni Louisville Hotel outdoes itself with its elegance and top-notch hospitality. The hotel has a central location and pretty stylish if you want that sort of presentation in your stay. It has plenty of fine dining and the amenities will try to keep you staying there instead of heading out.

Marriott: Comfort Meets Convenience

You have your standard Marriott in Louisville that is both affordable and convenience, best choice if you are here for work or pleasure. It always has reliable service and comfortable accommodations. Best place to set up on a travel budget and if you rather spend more time outside of the hotel exploring all that Louisville has to offer.

Where to Eat on the Bourbon Trail

While enjoying the culinary delights of Louisville, especially in the Bourbon District, make sure to check out these local favorites.

Repeal Oak Fired Steakhouse

The aroma of the oak fire wafting down the sidewalk will lure you to the vibrant dining room. This relative newcomer is always jam-packed and prepares a delicious steak or pretty much anything else on the menu.

Definitely a great place to feel the vibe of the Bourbon District while you are touring. Enjoy a drink in the bar if you’re unable to score a dinner reservation.

Pat’s Steakhouse

Pat’s is my favorite steakhouse in town. Stepping into the restaurant is literally like stepping back 50 or more years. With the dark, rich wood and Irish keepsakes adorning the walls, this is a real deal steakhouse. You know like the kind that only takes cash! They relaxed that policy a few years ago.

Enjoy the time of your life and tell Mr. Francis we said hello!

Merle’s Whiskey Kitchen

Merle’s is a laid-back whiskey bar with darn good barbeque! Their whiskey list is long and with a front door on Main Street they are a short walk from all the Urban stops!

Docs used to be my dinner-time cafeteria. I had a co-worker who loved this place. I always enjoyed a wonderful ribeye or short rib. The brisket is delicious as well. We enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and nearly endless list of bourbon!

This iconic museum invites you to explore the world of America’s favorite pastime, complete with a giant baseball bat that welcomes you at the entrance. Churchill Downs

Experience the thrill and elegance of horse racing at Churchill Downs, the legendary home of the Kentucky Derby. We recommend the Special Access tours at Churchill to really understand the heart and soul of this iconic venue!

Don’t miss the chance to walk the same grounds as some of the greatest racehorses in history!

Cumberland Falls is one of two places in the world to see a nighttime rainbow called a moonbow . The other one is in South Africa. Swing down to Corbin, Kentucky for some original Kentucky Fried Chicken and a moonbow!

Just like enjoying bourbon, there are many ways to experience it by staying in a variety of places from romantic countryside to vibrant downtown cities.

Urban Distilleries

Urban bourbon distilleries.

Proud to serve as the Gateway to Bourbon Country as a starting point for the scenic tours of legendary countryside distilleries, Louisville is now buzzing with a unique bourbon experience all its own.

The city is alive with the sounds of hustle, bustle and exciting new developments springing up on the original Whiskey Row and elsewhere with nearly a dozen bourbon-related ventures and $1 billion in investment.

Louisville’s first distillery since Prohibition, The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, opened in the heart of downtown in the Fall of 2013, signaling a new era in the Gateway to Bourbon Country and becoming the first of 10 and counting spirits-related attractions soon to be part of Louisville’s Urban Bourbon Experience.

Familiar brands like Evan Williams, Angel’s Envy, Michter’s, Old Forester and Stitzel-Weller are now open. Less familiar but destined to have cult followings are new craft distilleries such as Peerless, Rabbit Hole, Prohibition Craft Spirits and Copper & Kings. The cocktail and culinary experience that has been the Urban Bourbon Trail since 2008 continues to grow alongside the popularity of bourbon with 30+ stops. Each is well-stocked with at least 60 bourbons and some as many as 150. All are serving the city’s official cocktail - the Old-Fashioned.

Bourbon is more than a drink in Kentucky. It’s part of the culture, tradition and heritage of the community. As America’s only native spirit, it follows the timeline of American history and the founding of Louisville. The strategic location on the river played a vital role in developing bourbon whiskey itself. Stories like this can be discovered at attractions such as the Filson Historical Society, home to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center, and Louisville Stoneware in their curated room of old whiskey jugs. Bourbon enthusiasts can even pay homage to legendary distillers like Pappy Van Winkle by visiting the beautiful and historic grounds of Cave Hill Cemetery.

Even beyond the Urban Bourbon Trail stops you would be hard-pressed to find a local restaurant without a strong bourbon list or at least one bourbon-infused menu item. Satisfy your sweet tooth with bourbon balls, truffles or chocolates from local makers such as ArtEatables, Muth’s Candies, and Dundee Candy Shop. Try the Old-Fashioned cake at Sweet Surrender or bourbon-glazed donut at many of the city’s German heritage bakeries. Local ice cream vendors weigh in with various bourbon flavors at Comfy Cow, Louisville Cream, and Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen. Locals love the sweet endings at Feast BBQ – a bourbon slushie or a boozy peach milkshake with bourbon at Sidebar on Whiskey Row.

Find A Room

Just like enjoying bourbon, there are many ways to experience it by staying in a variety of places from romantic countryside to vibrant downtown cities.

Louisville – Gateway Itinerary

Start your Kentucky Bourbon Trail ® adventure in Louisville – the city whose official drink is the Old Fashioned! Plan ahead by booking your tours and transportation in advance with Mint Julep Experiences,   Pegasus Distillery Experiences , or Kentucky Bourbon Boys . Begin your journey at the official starting point, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail ® Welcome Center at the Frazier Museum. Make time to peruse their Spirit of Kentucky ® Bourbon exhibition, shop for Bourbon-y gifts, take a selfie in the bottle hall, and look for the secret speakeasy entrance. The Frazier staff is also an excellent resource for mapping out your trip, so use them as your guides.

We have overhauled the passport you know and love and turned it into a beautiful, 150+ page booklet that will help you on your journey! The new Bourbon Trail ™ Passport & Field Guide includes all 18 KBT ® distilleries as well as all 23 KBT Craft Tour distilleries. Books can be purchased at all participating distilleries or in advance here (all proceeds go towards furthering responsibility and sustainability efforts across the Commonwealth). Click here to learn more about the Bourbon Trail ™ Passport & Field Guide.

Bust out the tennies, Whiskey Row is calling! When you walk out of the Frazier Museum and turn left, there are four KBT™ distilleries within a one mile stretch of Main Street – Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery, Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, Old Forester Distilling Co., and Angel’s Envy Distillery. These experiences are super walkable, but if you choose to drive, make sure to reverse course as Main Street is one-way.

Start your distillery tours at the home of the  Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery . See the pot stills from the original Michter’s Pennsylvania Distillery, which traces its history back to 1753. Test your senses in the lab, and finish your tour off in the second floor bar. The Bar at Fort Nelson features classic cocktails curated by cocktail historian and author David Wondrich as well as modern creations by Bar Manager Carrie Casler and Bartenders David Tuney and Aron Queen (ask about the self-fill bottle station!).

Head two blocks down to the  Evan Williams Bourbon Experience , located just a stones-throw from the port where Evan himself used to send barrels down the river. ON3 is an urban-chic loft space that is open and airy, with exposed brick and floor-to-ceiling windows. You’ll find barrel staves and bottle chandeliers at the bar, and plenty of space to sit and mingle. Enjoy flights of Bourbon, or a specially prepared cocktail from their team of in-house mixologists.

Get your shades ready for you next stop! The  Old Forester Distilling Co.  is four floors of Bourbon education like you’ve never seen before. You will see barrels being assembled and charred (hence the shades) in their on-site cooperage and end your tour in their state of the art cocktail lounge, George’s Bar. If visiting on Fridays and Saturdays, have your camera ready as the Old Forester Whisky Drummer drums up business on Whiskey Row! Watch as the barrels built and filled in the cooperage are rolled out onto Main Street and into their vintage-style barrel truck.

Prepare your palate for this distillery’s different take on Bourbon. At  Angel’s Envy , they age their Bourbon in ruby port wine casks giving it a subtle depth of flavor. After your tour, grab a hand-crafted cocktail in their gorgeous, second story bar overlooking the Ohio River.

Next, head to the beloved NuLu district to visit Rabbit Hole Distillery . Step into this ultra-modern facility to learn how the owner fell in love with Bourbon as he fell in love with a girl, and what drives him to make what he considers to be the best Bourbons and ryes. Finish your tour with a cocktail in their Overlook bar curated by Death + Co.

Make your way back to West Louisville to tour the old  Stitzel-Weller Distillery. This site originally opened in 1935 has been closed to the public for years. Walk around for a few minutes and you’ll see just how much whiskey history has occurred on these hallowed grounds. Make sure to bring your appetite to the new Garden & Gun Club where southern fare is full display. (Stitzel-Weller is closed on Tuesdays.)

Leave the city limits momentarily to peruse the new home of Bulleit Distilling Co. Tour their state-of-the-art distillery, grab a cocktail from their bar, and take home a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon with your own customized label. (Bulleit is closed on Mondays.)

Take a short 40 minutes drive south on I-65 to the home of one of the world’s most noted whiskeys – the James B. Beam Distilling Co . After seeing every step of the process, you’ll have the chance to dip your own bottle of Knob Creek right off the bottling line. After the interactive, multi-sensory tour, make sure to grab some a delicious meal and sip a cocktail at The Kitchen Table Restaurant. Stay tuned to their events calendar for any special happenings throughout the year.

(Just south of Jim Beam lies the Four Roses Warehouse & Bottling Facility in Cox’s Creek. You may choose to get your passport stamped here or at the distillery. This Four Roses tour focuses on its warehouse and bottling operations. Save on admission fees if you tour both within 60 days.)

If you’ve got a smaller group who would love to tour distilleries with other folks, a day long public tour with Pegasus Distillery Experiences takes the guesswork out of your stay. Check out Your Perfect Kentucky Day for tour options.

Did somebody say “bucket list?” Mint Julep’s Roll Out the Barrel Experience will ‘whiskey’ you away from Louisville in a private helicopter where you will pick a barrel, personalize your bottles that will be delivered to you, and enjoy a world class meal at Star Hill Provisions. Two nights in luxury accommodations in Louisville included.

Located in the Portland neighborhood, just west of Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville brings you to the Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co . Learn how the Taylor’s are preserving their family’s 130-year distilling tradition as you tour their beautiful facility. Try the first brown spirit produced by the family in 100 years – the award-winning Peerless Rye Whiskey or their newly released Bourbon.

Make plans to stop into the Copper & Kings American Brandy Distillery  where they carefully craft brandy for Bourbon lovers. Make reservations at their  Rooftop Bar & Restaurant  for a casual yet unforgettable meal and libations overlooking the city.

Your next destination is nestled in the quiet countryside just outside the city.  Kentucky Artisan Distillery  produces its own label, Whiskey Row Bourbon, a blend of small batch barrels mirroring the recipes that came about during the westward expansion of our nation.

When you visit  Jeptha Creed Distillery in nearby Shelbyville, you feel like family. The mother/daughter team uses an heirloom variety of “bloody butcher” corn to make their Bourbon, and raise their own produce they use to infuse their spirits with. After your tour, grab a cocktail and gaze over the rolling hills and rickhouses.

The headlines say that Louisville is on the rise as a nationally recognized foodie city! So grab an Urban Bourbon Trail ® passport and start dining your way around town to discover some of the best bars and restaurants in Bourbon City. There are dozens of participating establishments to choose from but you only need to visit 6 to get your free t-shirt. There’s no better way to start the UBT than with a well-crafted Bourbon flight at Bourbons Bistro , Louisville’s foremost Bourbon bar. With a selection of more than 130 Bourbons, including an exclusive barrel selection program, Bourbons Bistro has a seasonal menu that is Bourbon inspired and locally sourced. Further eat, enjoy a “Bourbon of the day” and other nightly drink specials at Charr’d Bourbon Kitchen & Lounge  or a cocktail with classic arcade games at Recbar. For a downtown option check into Gatsby’s on Fourth at the storied Seelbach Hotel, order a famed “Seelbach” cocktail,  and ask about Al Capone’s getaway tunnels.

The Brown Hotel Lobby bar is a perfect place to refuel with the city’s official sandwich, the Hot Brown. The Proof bar in the original 21c Museum Hotel is sure to please. 8UP Elevated Drinkery is one of the city’s only rooftop bars. Lilly’s Bistro is a Louisville mainstay for dining and cocktails. If you leave Louisville without having a hot brown at the Brown Hotel, you’re doing it wrong.

The Butchertown Grocery Bakery is the only bakery in the state that also sells Bourbon! Not only will you enjoy fresh-baked European style breakfast and lunch treats, but you will also be able to purchase unique single barrel selections handpicked by Executive Pastry Chef Amanda Johnson. Just check out their IG page and try not to drool!

Other local favorites not on the UBT – Make reservations at Rooftop Bar & Restaurant at Copper & Kings and let their team take care of the rest while overlooking the city from this rooftop locale. The Silver Dollar in the Clifton neighborhood as plenty of bourbon along with Southern eats at its modern honky-tonk hangout. The Limbo puts a Bourbon spin on classic tiki drinks. Bourbon slushies are always on the menu at Feast BBQ and Royals Hot Chicken in the NuLu district.

Need a place to stay? We have options! When booking at the Marriott Louisville East , ask about the Bourbon suite complete with Bourbon-barrel decor. Enjoy a “Bourbon of the day” and other nightly drink specials at Charr’d Bourbon Kitchen & Lounge. For some great downtown options, check in to the Omni Hotel. With an on-site bowling alley (in the speakeasy), rooftop pool, full service spa, market, and two signature restaurants, you’ll never want to leave. The newly renovated Marriott Downtown also offers Bourbon-inspired decor with a special tasting room and a stop on the Urban Bourbon Trail®. Enjoy Bluegrass with your Bourbon on Saturdays in their adjoining Porch Restaurant. If you’re looking for luxurious, southern accommodations a little off the beaten path, check into the Chateau Bourbon B&B for a great night’s sleep and a Bourbon-inspired breakfast.

Nestled in downtown Louisville on historic West Main Street, along Museum Row, 21c Museum Hotel Louisville  is a  contemporary art museum, an award-winning 91-room boutique hotel, and home to acclaimed Proof on Main restaurant. Since 21c is so close to our Official Welcome Center at the Frazier Museum, we love to walk down there and give the bartenders some tough cocktail orders. We are here to report – they nail it. Every time.

If you’re looking for lodging with a little more history, look no further! Check into the Brown Hotel to enjoy the exceptional Bourbons on their bar, and make sure to order the Hot Brown sandwich – invented here. The Seelbach Hotel opened in 1905 and has been frequented by many notable Americans – 9 US Presidents for instance; Al Capone was a regular and once escaped the police through secret tunnels; and F. Scott Fitzgerald who took inspiration from the Seelbach when writing The Great Gatsby. Make sure to visit the Rathskeller speakeasy bar that Fitzgerald used to frequent and order the famous Seelbach cocktail – Bourbon, triple sec, bitters and champagne. If none of that floats your boat, Louisville has many other places to stay .

Speaking of easies…Louisville has lots of secret, underground watering holes – Hell or High Water, Lola’s, and Pin + Proof (speakeasy and bowling alley) just to name a few.

This is where it happens, folks – the most exciting two minutes in sports – the Kentucky Derby ® . If you can’t be here for the first Saturday in May, you can still immerse yourself in Kentucky’s other signature industry.

Want to interact with some thoroughbreds up close? Book a tour with Horse Country Tours to visit The Hermitage to witness broodmares, foals, and yearlings grazing the land on this working farm that has been active for nearly two centuries.

Kentucky Derby Museum is the place where Derby legends, horses and Bourbon come together to create unforgettable experiences . The Derby Café & Bourbon Bar has more than 100 Bourbons on the menu, making it the perfect spot to stop after one of the Museum’s exclusive  tours  of Churchill Downs. Guests who go on the  Bourbon & Bridles Experience learn why Kentucky’s most iconic treasures – Bourbon & Thoroughbreds – make the perfect pair. The Museum is a quick ten-minute drive from Stitzel-Weller Distillery.

Did someone say horses? For an extra special adventure, head to the scenic outskirts of Louisville to the Hermitage Farm where you can take a tour of their working horse farm, stroll through their art walk, peruse their culinary garden, enjoy a Bourbon tasting or cocktail class in a horse barn with some equine friends (hide your peppermints!), and dine at the world class Barn 8 Restaurant .

Psst – when you visit the Bulleit Distilling Co. and Jeptha Creed Distillery , you will be in Shelbyville – the Walking Horse Capital of the World! Make sure to check out Claudia Sanders Dinner House opened by the wife of the KFC Founder, Colonel Sanders.

There’s no shortage of “things to do” in Louisville! One of the city’s top attractions is the Slugger Museum & Factory where they’ve been making baseball bats since 1884 – don’t forget your free mini bat on the way out (or muddlers as we like to call them). Head to the 4th Street Live! entertainment district in the heart of downtown for dining, bowling, games, live music, sports bars and more all in one walkable block (get the adult milkshake at Whiskey Dry). Sign up for a class in advance and learn how to cook with Bourbon at Cooking at Millie’s. If you’re in the mood for an amusement and water park, Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay has roller coasters, water slides and something for every thrillseeker. If you’re into the more natural of wonders, head underground to the Louisville Mega Caverns for e-bike tours and the world’s only underground zip-line. Take in a show at the Kentucky Center for the Arts or the Actors Theatre, enjoy live musical performances at the Palace or the Brown Theatre, or peruse the vast galleries at the Speed Art Museum. Click here for museums and art galleries , here for performing arts , and here for music venues . For sports fans, Louisville is a great place to see a college basketball game, a minor league baseball game, or a soccer game. If you’re one of those who likes to celebrate Halloween year round, tour the Waverly Hills Sanitorium, once credited as the most haunted site on earth. Or visit renowned Cave Hill Cemetery to see the burial sites of notable Louisvillains – Muhammad Ali, boxing champion; Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken; Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill (sisters), composers of the Happy Birthday song. Explore the city by Neighborhood , and check here for discounts to these and other attractions.

Louisville is just about the most eventful city in the state. Here are a few highlights to get your juices flowing. The Kentucky Bourbon Affair is known as the ultimate Bourbon fantasy camp. This week-long series of events is hosted in Louisville with daily events occurring at the distilleries all over the state. Guests enjoy unprecedented access to Master Distillers, single barrel selections and skillfully prepared cuisine and cocktails. Ky Bourbon Affair fits perfectly into the Old Fashioned Fortnight two week series of events in the city.

Each September, thousands of folks flock to Louisville for  Bourbon & Beyond – the music festival that has quickly become one of the most anticipated events for world renowned musicians, delicious local food and over 40 Bourbons. Also stick around for Hometown Rising (country) and Louder Than Life (rock). If music is your jam, Louisville’s independent radio station hosts free concerts on the waterfront the last Wednesday of each month, April through September. Jeptha Creed Distillery has live music most Friday nights and trivia most Saturday night throughout the year.

The Kentucky Derby Festival kicks of a full month before the Derby and includes a fashion show, a Derby Ball, a culinary festival, and the world famous airshow and fireworks display – Thunder over Louisville. Featuring over 100 beers and a silent disco in a gorgeous airplane hangar, the Tailspin Ale Fest is a fun change of pace for February. Click here for these and many more Events in and around Louisville.

There are plenty of opportunities for shopping in Louisville whether in the NuLu district, Mall St. Matthew’s, Oxmoor Mall, or the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass. For antiques, vintage finds, and the just downright strange, check out Crazy Daisy, Mellwood Antiques, and Derby City Antique Mall & Cafe. If you’re into the spooky, visit Caufield’s Novelty shop – novel since 1920. When you’re visiting Copper & Kings American Brandy Co. , you’re just a stone’s throw away from the Butchertown Market – home to many local purveyors including one of our favorites, Bourbon Barrel Foods. Need to take a walk on the sweet side? Indulge in delectable Bourbon truffles and other divine confections at Art Eatables (just steps away from the Frazier).

Click here for all shopping opportunities in and around Louisville.

Ditch the car and opt for hiking shoes or a bike when you visit Cherokee Park. Located in the heart of the city, Cherokee is a 409-acre park designed by the same Olmstead who designed Central Park in New York City. Want more? The Parklands of Floyds Fork is one of the largest and most ambitious metropolitan park projects in the nation. This nearly 4,000 acre, donor-supported park system is made up of four major parks linked by a park drive, a first-rate urban trail system, and a remarkable water trail, all tracing Floyds Fork, a classic Kentucky stream. Every fall, Iroquois Park is transformed for their Jack ’o Lantern Spectacular – a 1/3-mile walking trail lined with 5,000 professional and amateur carved pumpkins arranged in amazing configurations. You have to see it to believe it! Art meets education meets the outdoors at the Bernheim Research Forest & Arboretum – right across the highway from the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont!

Take a walk on the wild side when you visit the Louisville Zoo & Botanical Gardens. Cast away for a riverboat cruise on the Belle of Louisville – a steamboat which is said to hold the all-time record in her class for miles traveled, years in operation, and places visited.

Rent bikes, scooters and surreys to explore the waterfront and make the mile-long trek across the Big Four Walking Bridge that extends over the river. Book an Old Louisville Historic Walking Tour, or eat your way across Louisville with a Culinary Tour .

Day 2 – Stitzel-Weller Reserve / Kentucky Artisan Distillery / Angel’s Envy

Breakfast at the hotel and depart for a full day bourbon experience with exclusive, private tours.

Our first stop is the historic  Stitzel-Weller Reserve  where we will learn about the past, present and future of bourbon. It’s a distillery drenched in the rich history of Bourbon’s past that’s pushing the boundaries with innovations for the future. Walk in the footsteps of bourbon legends, as you step into an active barrel house, cooper shop and micro still-house. Your journey ends with a tasting of Bulleit Bourbon, Bulleit 10-year-old, I.W. Harper NAS and Blade & Bow.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at Louisville’s Premier Riverfront Dining Destination,  River House . Famed Louisville chef and restauranteur, John Veranese, focuses on the smallest details in serving high quality cuisine using only the freshest local ingredients. Varanese’s eclectic menu boasts an array of options from stuffed grape leaves, and fried green tomato salad, to new signature entrées: the Bourbon Barrel Smoked Pork Chop, and Caramelized Orange Bourbon Salmon.

Afternoon tour and tastings at the  Kentucky Artisan Distillery , the home of the Jefferson’s Bourbon brand, as well as Whiskey Row Bourbon and Billy Goat Strut. This hands-on on tour gets you up close and personal the equipment used and every step in the distillery process, wherein every drop of bourbon is still made by hand almost exactly like it was 200 years ago.

We then head over to  Angel’s Envy Distillery  for an insider’s tour and hands-on private mixology and cocktail class. During this tasting experience, you will be tasting Maker’s Mark Cask Strength, an expression from their wood-finishing series (FAE-02), and a Private Selection picked by some of the Distillery team and meant to evoke notes of Toasted Marshmallow. Each bourbon will be thoughtfully paired with an artisan chocolate from ArtEatables.

Day 4 – Buffalo Trace / Mill Ridge Horse Farm / Keeneland Racetrack / Brooklyn & The Butcher

Breakfast at the hotel and on to Buffalo Trace distillery for a private tour and tastings. Throughout the challenges of floods, fires, tornadoes and even Prohibition, the American family-owned distillery has never compromised. Buffalo Trace, like all bourbon distilleries, carefully guards its unique mash bill–its secret combination of corn, rye, and malted barley. In addition to its flagship bourbon, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, the distillery produces other finely crafted bourbons including Blanton’s, W.L. Weller, Old Charter, and Eagle Rare. A variety of bourbon tours cover the history of the distillery (there has been a working distillery on the grounds since 1787) and the differences between whiskey and bourbon. You’ll get to visit the hand bottling hall and a century-old aging warehouse.

Our next stop is the Mill Ridge Horse Farm, a full-service thoroughbred farm located in the heart of Central Kentucky for our first taste of this region’s pastime and then on to spend the afternoon at the races at the Keeneland Racetrack. Tradition, beauty and world-class Thoroughbreds make Keeneland racing a spectacle to behold. For more than eight decades, the best horses, owners, jockeys and trainers have converged at Keeneland each April to compete in “racing as it was meant to be.”

Kentucky bourbon tourism has record year, with $2.1 billon in investments. What that means

urban bourbon tour louisville

Kentucky bourbon survived 13 years of prohibition and the immediate following halt of distilling during World War II only to endure a so-called "golden age" in the years after the war.

Now, the bourbon industry across the state is once again flourishing at unprecedented rates; helping to draw in a record year of tourism and the best year for growth the spirits industry has ever seen.

"Bourbon is booming," Gov. Andy Beshear told the Courier Journal on Dec. 19. "I don't see it slowing down any time soon. I see more craft distilleries that are likely to open, and I see them continuing to move all over the state."

On Dec. 15, Beshear announced that in 2022 "Kentucky recorded its best year for growth of its signature bourbon and spirits industry, with over $2.1 billion in new investments and approximately 700 new jobs for Kentucky residents."

As the bourbon industry continues to grow across the commonwealth, here's a look at what that means.

Bourbon is a key tourism attraction in Kentucky

More: Bourbon is big business in Kentucky. Here are 14 bourbon projects opening in 2024

When traveling to Kentucky, it is nearly impossible to miss the 47 distillery attractions on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail , and for many visitors, bourbon is part of the draw to visit. In 2022, nearly 76 million tourists came through the state, spending more than $8 billion. This visitor level surpasses pre-pandemic 2019 tourism levels and generated $12.9 billion in economic impact for Kentucky, a new state record.

"I'm waiting on the numbers from 2023 but at the very least, I think it'll be the second biggest year," Beshear said. "2022 had the most visitors to the Bourbon Trail ever. I do believe 2023 will beat that, and 2024 will beat even that."

Roughly 95% of the world's bourbon comes from Kentucky and in recent years, the commonwealth's "distilling industry has really embraced tourism, much like what you see in Napa," said Mike Mangeot, the commissioner of tourism for the Kentucky Department of Tourism .

More than two million travelers visited the Kentucky Bourbon Trail in 2022, according to the Kentucky Distillers' Association . The most visited distillery in the state, Buffalo Trace , which is not a member of the trail, saw more than 470,000 guests in the same period, according to Mangeot.

Small, family-run distilleries across the state are also seeing success. The Neeley Family Distillery in Gallatin County offers tours, tastings, and a full bar every day of the week, said Royce Neeley, owner and Master Distiller. The 11-generation family distillery has "developed a great cult following over the world" and welcomes around 60,000 visitors annually.

"The industry reaches consumers all across the United States with a growing demand and has untapped potential as demand continues to grow very quickly in popularity internationally," Mangeot told the Courier Journal. "The more people learn about bourbon, the more opportunity we have to invite them to Kentucky to enjoy a fulfilling bourbon experience."

Going after the popularity associated with "America's native spirit" is something the Beshear administration has supported, namely through marketing efforts such as the Kentucky Department of Tourism partnership with Brand USA , the destination marketing organization for the U.S., Mangeot shared.

While 2023 data on the bourbon industry has yet to be released, Mangeot "suspect(s) we will see another year of great economic impact" and predicts 2024 will be fueled by further growth across both bourbon and tourism, noting the state has 25 multijurisdictional tourism projects launching or continuing in their early stages, most of which were funded via the American Rescue Plan Act .

"Bourbon sets us apart and is something that we, as Kentucky, can specifically own," Mangeot said. "The bourbon industry allows us to offer experiences you can't find anywhere else."

The growth of bourbon tourism in Louisville

Louisville's relationship with bourbon tourism efforts, known as bourbonism, a term coined by former Mayor Greg Fischer, can be traced back to 2006 when Louisville Tourism sought a new brand identity to help promote the city. Eventually, the tourism team decided to "lean-in" to bourbon, a Kentucky cultural asset, and adopted "Gateway to Bourbon Country" as its identity.

At the time, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail was much smaller, and Louisville was without any visitor-related bourbon experience in city limits, Rosanne Mastin, communications and public affairs manager with Louisville Tourism told the Courier Journal.

Over the next couple of years, Louisville's promotion of bourbonism had grown and the Urban Bourbon Trail was born in 2008. And by 2013, Mastin said the city was no longer the "Gateway to Bourbon Country" but rather had morphed into "Bourbon City."

The 2013 opening of the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience within Louisville city limits started the trend of tasting rooms and smaller distillery operations being able to succeed and grow in an urban area. The Evan Williams immersive visitor’s center allows guests to experience and taste the history of its bourbon in the historic Whiskey Row .

"As the first distillery to return to Whiskey Row since the original heyday, the [Evan Williams Bourbon Experience] has led the way for revitalizing 'Bourbonism' or the art of bringing Bourbon-based Tourism to Louisville and Kentucky overall," said Jeff Crowe, director of Kentucky visitor experiences at Heaven Hill.

Since then, more than a dozen bourbon-related attractions have popped up along urban areas including Louisville, Lexington, and parts of Northern Kentucky.

In a 2019-20 study shared by Louisville Tourism, Louisville's bourbonism was the top factor behind a visit to the city, with 30.9% of visitors alluding to bourbon being what drew them to the metro area. In the same study, 43.9% of all respondents took part in bourbon tastings and 39.1% went on a distillery tour.

But it's no accident that Louisville Tourism was able to turn Kentucky's famed brown water into a travel hotspot. The tourism team strategically worked with marketing firms and the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport to align direct flights toward targeted regional areas and specific flight markets to make Bourbon City accessible. As a result, Louisville Tourism won 11 awards from the Kentucky Travel Industry Association, seven of which represented the utilization of Bourbon as a primary driver for visitation, and Travel + Leisure recently named the city as one of the "50 Best Places to Travel in 2024."

"Travelers are looking for authentic experiences and offering a taste of America’s only native spirit is just that," Mastin said. "Luckily, Louisville is not a one-trick pony and has many more assets to offer visitors including icons such as the Kentucky Derby Museum/Churchill Downs, Muhammad Ali Center and the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, and many other attractions."
