It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

Apple has released the latest version of its Safari browser for macOS Catalina and High Sierra, ahead of the release of Big Sur later this year. Safari 14 improves the browser’s tabs, adds a new privacy report feature, and offers new customization options for your start page. You can download it by heading to System Preferences app and clicking “Software Update.” 

One of the key improvements that’s coming with the latest version of Safari is improved tab management . The tabs themselves have been redesigned to be more space-efficient, display website favicons by default, and show a preview of each tab while hovering your mouse over them. There’s a new start page which you can customize with your own backgrounds and links, and a Privacy Report that highlights any cross-site trackers that the browser is blocking. Oh, and this version of the browser also removes support for Adobe Flash.

Some new Safari features will require macOS Big Sur to run, and aren’t available if you’re updating Safari on an older version of the operating system, 9to5Mac reports . These include support for 4K HDR video, and the browser’s built-in translation feature.

Yesterday saw the release of a swathe of Apple operating system updates , including iOS 14 for iPhones, iPadOS 14 for iPads, tvOS 14 for the Apple TV, and watchOS 7 for Apple Watches. You’ve still got a little longer to wait to update your Mac, but at least you can grab the new browser now.

How to Check the Version Number of Apple Safari Browser

What To Know

• Choose Safari from the top menu, and About Safari . The version number will be on the window that pops up.
• On iOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update . Your iOS version and Safari version are the same. (Example: iOS 11 = Safari 11)

This article explains how to find the version of Safari that you're running on a Mac and an iOS device.

Find the Safari Version Number on a Mac

To determine which version of Safari is installed on a Mac computer:

Go to the dock and select the Safari icon to open the Safari browser.

Choose About Safari under the Safari menu.

A small window appears with the browser version number.

The first number, located before the parenthesis, is the current version of Safari. The longer second number (located inside the parentheses) is the WebKit/Safari Build version. For example, if the dialog box displays Version 11.0.3 (13604.5.6), the Safari version number is 11.0.3.

Find the Safari Version Number on an IOS Device

Because Safari is part of the iOS operating system, its version is the same as the current version of iOS that you have.

To see the iOS version currently installed on an iPhone or iPad, follow the instructions below.

Open Settings .

Select General .

Select Software Update . The number that appears at the top of the screen next to iOS is the version number. For example, if your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 11.2.6, then it is running Safari 11. If your device is running iOS 12.1.2, it is running Safari 12, and so on.

Underneath the version number, you'll either see "Your software is up to date" or a prompt to update to the latest version.

As of October, 2022, the current version of Safari on Mac, iPad, and iPhone is 16.0.

First, turn off automatic updates by opening System Preferences and selecting Software Update , then turning off Automatically keep my Mac up to date . After that, either restore a Time Machine backup that included an older version of Safari, or downgrade to an earlier version of macOS .

The truth is, the perfect browser doesn't exist. Each of the four most popular macOS browsers has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, just based on the engine that's used for web rendering, and what the developers of the big-four have prioritized.

While the best browser for the individual varies on use case, and which websites behave the best on any given browser, there are a series of benchmarking tools that can measure performance on synthetic tasks.

Browser benchmarks

We tested each browser on three different testing platforms: JetStream 2, Speedometer, and MotionMark.

JetStream 2 is a JavaScript-benchmark that scores browsers based on how quickly they can start and execute code, which translates to faster JavaScript performance. Since JavaScript is used on most web browsers, it's a good test of snappiness for code-intensive sites.

MotionMark is a graphical browser testing suite that measures the ability to render complex web pages. Think a page that has complicated graphics and animations. A higher score results in smoother transitions and animations.

Speedometer 2.0 determines the responsiveness of a browser when running web applications. Among the three, it's the truest option for testing real-world performance across many popular websites and online services. A good example is adding tasks to a to-do list in a web app.

Chrome came out on top in JetStream 2 testing, while Safari took second place.

Safari was the fastest in MotionMark benchmark testing.

Speedometer testing showed off interesting results, with Firefox and Edge coming in first and second, and Safari in last place.

Different testing platforms result in different scores, so your own mileage may vary. Safari was the best for graphical performance, for example, but its responsiveness lagged behind others. Choose what specific metrics are most important to you.

For Mac users, Safari is an institution. It's the default browser on Apple platforms and is generally lightweight and efficient. As you'd expect for an Apple product, Safari also emphasizing privacy while you browser online.

From the very first boot on a new Mac, Safari is instantly available and configured for easy, private browsing. That makes it the best choice for the most non-technical among us, since you won't need to download and install anything. Safari "just works" out of the box.

It also features the tighest integration across Apple's other devices and systems. You can use Continuity to easy hand-off your browsing between your Mac and any iPhone or iPad you have around. If you need to buy something with Apple Pay , you can authenticate purchases with Face ID or Touch ID.

Safari also features some strong privacy protections, including mechanisms aimed at mitigating cross-site tracking and ad targeting. It features a built-in password manager that allows you to save and store passwords — with easy autofill options — across your Apple devices.

As an Apple-made product, Safari is the most convenient option on this list for Mac users — particularly those who own multiple Apple devices. It's also a good choice for the privacy conscious, though it isn't the fastest and it doesn't yet have a strong extension marketplace.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a massively popular browser, and a particular favorite of those who routinely use extensions to customize their web experience. It's the most-used web browser in the world, and it's faster and more RAM-efficient than it used to be. Chrome is even currently speedier than Safari on macOS.

The browser also has one of the world's most extensive list of add-ons, plug-ins, and extensions. From plugins focused on online privacy or to video content downloaders, there are around 190,000 extensions in total to choose from. You can also choose from a number of different themes and customization options.

Intelligent Google-made features include automatic site translations and deep integration with the company's online tools and services — so it's great for those who rely on Gmail, Google Docs, or another Google service. Syncing between Google apps on different devices is also top-notch.

However, Google is a data company that relies on collecting information about its users. While the company has taken steps to bolster its privacy reputation, it's still a company that makes money on harvesting data. Those who are particularly privacy-conscious will probably want to look elsewhere.

It's hard to go wrong with the world's most popular web browser, particularly with its seamless workflow features and customization options. However, if you are even slightly concerned about online privacy, you may want to go with another option.

Mozilla Firefox is one of the only popular and mainstream browsers to have started life as an open source project. It's still a free and open source browser with a hefty focus on privacy and security, which could make it a good fit for those who want a Google Chrome alternative.

Because of its open source nature, users are free to explore Firefox's code — and they do. The browser doesn't have any hidden secrets or data-harvesters. It also features some excellent built-in privacy and security protections, including Enhanced Tracking Protection and an extensive list of customizable permissions.

Firefox was also the first browser to actually offer third-party extensions and add-ons. Although it might not have as many extensions as Google Chrome, you'll still find a hefty list of options ranging from privacy add-ons to customizable themes for your browser.

Although Firefox has some cross-platform integration between its app and built-in Pocket support, it isn't as seamless as Chrome or Safari. If speed if your primary concern, it's also important to note that Firefox isn't the fastest browser by most metrics.

Users who want an open source browser or are committed to Mozilla's mission of keeping the internet open and free will find a browser after their own hearts here. For the average user, however, another browser on this list might be a better fit.

Microsoft Edge is the spiritual successor to Internet Explorer that was first released in 2015. Originally HTML-based, Microsoft overhauled the browser to be based on Chromium, which is the same underlying software used to make Google Chrome.

As such, Microsoft Edge is now much more competitive than it used to be. It's far from a Google Chrome clone, but you should expect a similar level of performance from it. Some users believe that Microsoft Edge even feels snappier than Chrome on a Mac.

Because it's Chromium-based, Microsoft Edge also has a list of extensions similar to Chrome. It also sports a number of unique features, such as a "Collections" ability that lets you save information like text or webpages to a built-in notebook. There's also a vertical tab bar, a built-in read aloud feature, and an easy native screenshot tool.

It's a solid option for anyone that doesn't like Safari and wants an alternative to Google Chrome because of privacy reasons. If you use a Microsoft account like some use a Google account, then Edge might also be a solid option.

There's no clear answer for what the "best" browser on macOS is. However, some browsers are better suited to specific tasks than others.

When it comes to smooth JavaScript execution, Chrome is in the top spot with Safari a close second. Safari, according to the MotionMark testing, handles complex web pages better than any other browser.

Firefox, interestingly enough, may be the fastest when it comes to general everyday web apps.

Of course, there's also the issues of extension support, privacy, and synchronization across other devices. Many of the browsers are evenly matched on these metrics, but some excel in specific areas like privacy or cross-platform integration.

But, unlike on iOS, you aren't effectively stuck with one browser core technology. These four browsers, and several more, are available on macOS, and can be run in parallel.

While we don't recommend running all four unless you're a web developer or unit case tester, two or three different browsers can be run at-will, if any given browser doesn't handle your work case well.

What operating system does the Mac use?

All Macs run macOS, previously known as Mac OS X, and have done so since the introduction of the first version of Mac OS X in 2001. Prior to that Macs ran Mac OS 9 which came out in 1999. Mac OS X was based on technology from NeXT Computer, which was another company founded by Steve Jobs. Jobs brought the technology back to Apple with him when he was reinstated as Apple CEO. The operating system is Unix-based.

macOS Version History

Mac OS X was launched more than two decades ago on March 24, 2001. There’s been a lot of change over those two decades: good and bad. From the problems with the first edition (it was slow and didn’t run important apps like Microsoft Word) Mac OS X has evolved through various iterations and various designs to what we know today. We’ve seen tight integration with iOS devices, the incorporation of the cloud, and the arrival of excellent and helpful features including integrated Time Machine backups, Quick Look – which lets you see a preview of a document without opening the application, and innovations like Expose and Spaces and Desktop Stacks to help you work more efficiently.

Mac OS X and macOS names

As you can see from the list above, with the exception of the first OS X beta, all versions of the Mac operating system from 2001 to 2012 were all named after big cats, from Cheetah to Panther to the final release, Mountain Lion.

But while the public-facing builds were named after big cats, internally, they were named after wines (aside from OS X 10.6 which had no codename).

Even after Apple switched public-facing code names to places in California back in 2013, it carried on naming them after wines internally until 2014. In 2015, Apple decided to change the theme of internal code names from wines to types of apples. Original.

In 2016, Apple took the plunge to unify the branding of its operating systems by rebranding Mac OS X to macOS, which sits nicely alongside iOS, tvOS, and watchOS and paved the way for macOS 11, the successor to Mac OS X, which arrived twenty years after the first beta of Mac OS X.

Which versions of macOS are still updated?

Apple still supplies regular features and security updates to the most recent version of macOS. Right now this is Sonoma, also known as macOS 14.

The previous two versions of macOS also receive security updates and bug fixes. If you are running macOS 13 Ventura and macOS 12 Monterey you will get regular security updates.

Since the arrival of Sonoma, Apple no longer supports macOS Big Sur, which arrived in 2020. Similarly, with the arrival of Ventura in October 2022 Apple ceased support for Catalina, which arrived in 2019. See: How long do Macs and MacBooks last?

Apple also issues updates to its Safari web browser. The latest version of Safari for Mac is Safari 17 (as of September 2023) and it requires Monterey, Ventura or Sonoma.

How to tell which macOS version you are running

You can tell which version of macOS you are running by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left and choosing About This Mac. It will clearly show which version of macOS you are running along with the most recent version that your Mac has installed

How to install the latest version of macOS

If you want to update your Mac to a newer version of macOS the method will be determined by the version of macOS you are running.

Very old versions of Mac OS X came on a disk and any security updates came via Software Update. Since the arrival of the Mac App Store in 2011 (as an update to Snow Leopard) versions of Mac OS X and macOS have been available to download via the Mac App Store.

However, that changed with Mojave, which arrived in 2018. Now operating system updates come in via Software Updates which is either located in System Settings > General > Software Update or in System Preferences > Software Update (pre-Ventura). One of the benefits of this is that your Mac can be set to automatically download the latest updates and install them, keeping your Mac up-to-date with minimum effort on your part. Incidentally, you can still find the macOS software on the Mac App Store. 

Some Macs will be set to update macOS automatically. If you want your Mac to update automatically follow these steps:

In Ventura or later:

• Open System Settings.
• Click on General.
• Click on Software Update.
• Click on the i beside Automatic Updates and make sure that Check for updates, Download new updates when available, and Install macOS updates are selected. This way your Mac will automatically update to the latest version. If you would prefer not to have your Mac do this automatically you can deselect these options.

In Monterey, Big Sur, Mojave, or Catalina:

• Open System Preferences.
• Check the box beside Automatically keep my Mac up to date (or Download new updates when available).
• Now select the box Install macOS updates.

In High Sierra or earlier:

• Click on App Store .
• Check the box beside Automatically check for updates – it should have a tick in it as should the four options below that…
• Now deselect the box beside Download newly available updates in the background.

Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac. If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model.

How to update macOS using Software Update

If you want to reinstall macOS, or your Mac doesn't start up all the way because it doesn't have a working operating system, you can use the built-in Recovery system to reinstall macOS.

How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery

To download macOS from the App Store, you must download from a Mac that is compatible with that macOS. If your Mac isn't compatible, the App Store dims the Get button, says that the macOS is not compatible with this device, or says that the requested version of macOS is not available.

Use these links to find macOS in the App Store. If these links don't work as expected, try again using Safari, which is in your Applications folder.

Click the Get button in the App Store to begin downloading. Software Update might open and ask you to download from there.

After downloading to your Applications folder, the installer opens automatically. Follow the onscreen installation instructions. Or quit without installing to leave the installer in your Applications folder for later use.

Use a web browser for older versions

These older macOS versions are available as disk images that you can download using your web browser. To get the installer from the disk image, you must use a Mac that is compatible with that macOS.

Use these links to download a macOS disk image (.dmg) file. If these links don't work as expected, try again using Safari, which is in your Applications folder.

Double-click the .dmg file to open it and see the package (.pkg) file within.

Double-click the .pkg file, then follow the onscreen instructions to install the macOS installer into your Applications folder.

Open your Applications folder and double-click the macOS installer, named Install [ Version Name ]. Follow the onscreen installation instructions.

A bootable installer can be useful if you want to install macOS on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time, or when you can't install using macOS Recovery or the other methods.

To download an installer suitable for creating a bootable installer, use the App Store or use a web browser to download from a compatible Mac. The Mac must also be using macOS High Sierra or later, the latest version of macOS Sierra, or the latest version of OS X El Capitan.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 195 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

After updating to Safari Version 17.5 (17618.2.12.111.5, 17618) it sometimes crashes

My previous Safari version (before updating my Mac to macOS Monterey 12.7.5) worked fine. Now I have Safari version 17.5 (17618.2.12.111.5, 17618) and it crashes about 3 to 4 times per day, e.g. when clicking on a link or closing a Safari window. The situation can't be reproduced.

I haven't changed anything else on my Mac, just installed both updates.

Is this a known bug?

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following; 

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts 

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2 : if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Start with this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

Thanks. I think this won't help, but I did it.

Some cookies I had to keep, cause they would be too time consuming to set up again (they were never a problem).

macOS 15: Release date, AI, features, Mac compatibility, more

m acOS 15 is Apple’s upcoming 2024 operating system update for MacBook laptops and Mac desktop computers. After tightening the integration between Mac and iPad in previous software updates, the company offered a lackluster update with macOS Sonoma , which focused on improved video call experiences and boosting gaming performances.

Apple has a much more significant update planned for 2024, and it’ll be the first version of macOS to put AI front and center. Here’s everything we know so far about macOS 15.

What will Apple call macOS 15?

It’s always hard to predict what Apple will call its latest macOS version. Rumors have previously suggested Apple was planning to call a future macOS Mammoth, as the Cupertino firm had asked for a trademark extension of this name in 2021.

Mammoth was rumored for 2021 when Apple unveiled Monterey and again rumored in 2022. For 2024, currently, it’s unclear what Apple will call macOS 15. Internally, this software is known as Glow.

Apple delayed development of macOS 15 to fix bugs

By the end of 2023, a report by Bloomberg highlighted that Apple briefly paused the development of its upcoming operating system updates to fix an incredible amount of bugs. With that, employees had an unusual week of development pause to address the several errors with iOS 18 , macOS 15, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18.

According to the publication, Apple's software chief, Craig Federighi, is pushing the company's employees to address bugs over launching new features. Gurman says this effort has been going on for a few years now, which explains why we had so many delayed features in recent software launches.

While macOS Sonoma wasn’t one of the worst software experiences when talking about bugs, this update has made Safari unusable as it consumes too much memory. In addition, there’s a pesty Notes bug that when you add a numerical list, it changes to bullets.

Personally, while I’d love new features, as macOS Sonoma was a mild update, I couldn’t help but wonder if Apple isn’t planning another macOS High Sierra-like update, where the company improves software stability by fixing most of the system’s bugs.

Rumored features

Unlike hardware releases, it’s difficult to know which software improvements Apple will bring to its new operating system since it’s all in-house. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said iOS 18 is expected to be an “ambitious and compelling update,” as the company will heavily rely on AI capabilities for this software update. That said, here’s what we expect macOS 15 to bring.

AI is coming to Mac

Bloomberg ‘s Mark Gurman, analyst Jeff Pu , and The Information believe generative AI will be a massive part of iOS 18 and the iPhone 16 . That said, it’s possible that some of these features might land on the Mac. These are some use cases for  Apple's AI :

• Auto-summarizing and auto-complete features for core apps and productivity software (Pages, Keynote). This was also  rumored by leaker yeux1122 , which says code on iOS 18 suggests this function.
• Better playlist creation in Apple Music
• Siri (a big overall overhaul with a focus on AI)
• Code completion in a new version of Xcode for developers
• AppleCare tools to assist employees in helping customers with troubleshooting

All of this could also be part of macOS 15, although we’ll have to wait until Apple announces this operating system update.

Freeform app update

According to  MacRumors , Apple is preparing for an update to the Freeform app. The publication says there's a new "Freeform Scenes" feature coming with iOS 18, which will help with board navigation. Users will be able to select, edit, name, and collaborate with scenes.

The Freeform Scenes UI will be located near the zoom controls. With a new sandwich bar, it will display individual arrow icons for navigation between scenes. Apple is even preparing keyboard shortcuts for this feature, which include:

• Save:  Shift + Command + S
• Next Scene:  Option + Command + ]
• Previous Scene:  Option + Command + [

The Notes app is getting a revamp

According to the latest rumors, Apple wants to integrate  some of its apps with the Notes app , such as a built-in voice recording feature and some kind of Calculator integration within the app. At least the built-in voice recording feature is expected to be available in the first betas of macOS 15, while a "Math Notes" feature might be saved for a later date.

With the in-app recording feature, users will be able to "record, save, and play audio recordings directly from the Notes app.

A new Calculator app is coming

According to AppleInsider, Apple is working on its "Project GreyParrot" with new features and enhancements for the Calculator app , specifically on macOS 15. The publication says there'll be a dedicated button at the top left of the Calculator app on macOS 15 that will give users "the option to toggle the history tape from all three calculator views – basic, scientific, and programmer."

The Calculator app will also resemble its iPhone version, according to the report. This could be the first redesign of the software since macOS 10 Yosemite. Another interesting feature I couldn't believe wasn't available is the ability to resize the app's window without selecting a different calculator view.

Apple Vision Pro integration

Since macOS 14 lacked new features between Mac and iPad, likely, Apple is now focusing its efforts on integrating its Mac system with Vision Pro . With productivity features being a core part of visionOS , we may see a better integration between these software, such as:

• More virtual displays when connecting your Vision Pro to Mac
• Improved efficiency on iWork suite when connected to a Mac

Safari Browsing Assistant

According to  MacRumors , two independent sources discovered references to a new Safari Browsing Assistant. Nicolas Alvarez  found it  in the backend code on Apple's servers, and  MacRumors  contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the reference exists.

Alvarez also mentioned an equally mysterious "Encrypted Visual Search" functionality. This feature doesn't appear to be connected to  Visual Look Up , but maybe that's exactly what it is.

Alvarez also noted that both features use Private Relay infrastructure to send data to Apple anonymously. That way, Apple doesn't know your IP.

Calendar and Reminders apps might join forces for good

Apple might  merge Calendar and Reminders into a powerful Calendar app.  According to a report, users will be able to schedule and organize reminders directly from within the Calendar app without the need to launch the standalone Reminders app.

The Calendar app will behave similarly to the Reminders app, with the ability to select a specific date, time, and location for new reminders. Still, there might not be a major design change for this app, only small tweaks and overall improvements.

Apple ID might change to an Apple Account brand

Apple is reportedly considering changing the name of Apple ID to  "Apple Account."  It could happen once macOS 15 arrives. While it's unclear why Apple might make the change, it would make a lot more sense in the context of Apple's current business.

Sources who are supposedly familiar with Apple's plans informed  MacRumors  that Apple is already testing the Apple Account name.

If Apple switches Apple ID to Apple Account, it would happen alongside the releases of iOS 18 (codename Crystal) and macOS 15 (codename Glow), says the blog. "System applications will receive modifications to reflect the change, as will Apple's website - assuming the company chooses to implement the new branding."

macOS 15 release date

If Apple follows the trend, the company will unveil macOS 15 at the WWDC 2024. The conference has been announced to take place on June 10 . After that, macOS 15 will be available for developers to try out.

Around July, a public beta will be made available. If Apple follows the trend, macOS should be finally released around September or October. It depends on how big of an update this one will be, as macOS Sonoma was released in September, and most previous versions in October.

When can I try the macOS 15 beta?

You can’t try the first macOS 15 beta just yet, as this operating system update hasn’t been announced. Still, once it’s teased during WWDC 2024, users just need to follow the steps below:

• After enrolling in the developer beta, go to Settings;
• Open General and select Software Update
• Click on Beta updates and switch from macOS Sonoma Developer Beta to macOS 15 Developer beta

How to download macOS 15 public beta

At the moment, you can’t download macOS 15 public beta. Still, make sure you’re enrolled in the  Apple Beta Software Program  to test macOS 15’s newest features. Unlike other years, you just have to log into the program with your Apple ID, agree with the terms and conditions, and follow these steps:

• Go to Settings on your Mac;
• Open General and select Software Update;
• Click on Beta updates and check macOS 15 Public Beta.

Compatible Mac models

As Apple focuses on Mac models with its own silicon, we could see more Intel counterparts losing compatibility with macOS 15. Here are the Macs that currently support macOS 14 Sonoma:

• 2019 iMac and later
• 2017 iMac Pro
• 2018 MacBook Air and later
• 2018 MacBook Pro and later
• 2019 Mac Pro and later
• 2018 Mac mini and later

Apple says if you want to ship your own iOS browser engine in EU, you need to be there

Rival coders must have euro-based staff to build and test non-webkit surfing.

Exclusive Apple's grudging accommodation of European law – allowing third-party browser engines on its mobile devices – apparently comes with a restriction that makes it difficult to develop and support third-party browser engines for the region.

The Register has learned from those involved in the browser trade that Apple has limited the development and testing of third-party browser engines to devices physically located in the EU. That requirement adds an additional barrier to anyone planning to develop and support a browser with an alternative engine in the EU.

It effectively geofences the development team. Browser-makers whose dev teams are located in the US will only be able to work on simulators. While some testing can be done in a simulator, there's no substitute for testing on device – which means developers will have to work within Apple's prescribed geographical boundary.

Prior to iOS 17.4, Apple required all web browsers on iOS or iPadOS to use Apple's WebKit rendering engine. Alternatives like Gecko (used by Mozilla Firefox) or Blink (used by Google and other Chromium-based browsers) were not permitted. Whatever brand of browser you thought you were using on your iPhone, under the hood it was basically Safari.

Browser makers have objected to this for years, because it limits competitive differentiation and reduces the incentive for Apple owners to use non-Safari browsers.

Apple's designation under Europe's Digital Markets Act (DMA) as a gatekeeper for the App Store, iOS, Safari, and just recently iPadOS forced Cupertino to make concessions.

One such allowance – realized in iOS 17.4 – was letting iOS (and subsequently iPadOS ) apps in the EU use alternative browser engines.

But rivals have complained that Apple's concessions are designed – as Mozilla put it – to make it "as painful as possible for others to provide competitive alternatives to Safari."

That can be seen in Apple's extensive list of requirements to offer a third-party browser engine on iOS in the EU.

Parisa Tabriz, VP of engineering and general manager of Chrome at Google, dismissed Apple's rule changes earlier this year. "Apple isn't serious about supporting web browser or engine choice on iOS," Tabriz wrote in February. "Their strategy is overly restrictive, and won't meaningfully lead to real choice for browser developers."

As one apple store votes against forming union, another may go on strike.

When Apple announced its plan to make changes in response to DMA in January, developers expressed concern that supporting a separate EU browser might be a problem. And those concerns persist.

"The contract terms are bonkers and almost no vendor I'm aware of will agree to them," lamented one industry veteran familiar with the making of browsers in response to an inquiry from The Register .

"Even folks that may have signed something to be able to prototype can't ship under the constraints Apple's trying to impose. They're so broad and sweeping as to try to duck most of the DMA by contract … which is certainly bold."

In March, the European Commission opened an investigation into Apple based on concerns that Cupertino's "steering" rules and browser choice screen fell short of DMA requirements.

"By blocking browser engineers across the globe from working on their real browsers unless they are physically located in the EU, Apple is preventing them from being able to compete or perhaps even ship on iOS," declared Alex Moore, executive director of Open Web Advocacy, in a note to The Register .

"This is clearly absurd, has no reasonable justification and can only be described as malicious compliance. As a plausible scenario, imagine as a browser vendor you have a security issue but your top expert on that type of vulnerability is in the US. They have to fly to the EU so they can test and fix on a real device?

"At a minimum, Apple should issue guidance that this is a misunderstanding and that browser vendor test devices are exempt."

Asked about Apple's geofencing of devices for development, an Opera spokesperson replied that it hadn't heard about the issue – but that's not surprising given that the organization is headquartered in the EU.

Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Vivaldi, also admitted he hadn't heard about the requirement. "Our dev team is all based in the EEA – mostly Norway and Iceland – so I presume this would not have applied to us," he explained. "But again, I cannot see how they could have a rule like that.

"I would think that would be seen as another anti-competitive move," he added.

"[Apple's] team is in the US and so are the teams for Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and most of the other larger browser companies."

Google and Mozilla didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Nor did Apple – which seldom does.

Mozilla and Google have explored versions of Firefox and Chrome for iOS based on non-WebKit engines, but have yet to release anything. Firefox users have requested a Gecko-based version of Firefox for iOS, but are yet to receive any release commitment. ®

Apple Shortcuts and ChatGPT for Mac

OpenAI recently launched their official ChatGPT app for the Mac (before Windows). The macOS app brings most of the functionality from the iPhone version to the desktop — no web browser needed.

Option + Space

Hands-down, the best function of the Mac app is instant ChatGPT access from anywhere with a simple keyboard shortcut. Option + Space is the default, or you can assign your own. Before ChatGPT came to the Mac, I kept a Safari tab pinned to OpenAI’s website. Since I spend the majority of my work week on the Mac, my ChatGPT usage has skyrocketed beyond a few times a day to dozens of instances throughout the day.

Anyway, today I realized that the same Shortcuts supported by ChatGPT on iOS also work with ChatGPT on macOS! In my case, they synced over and just worked. You can also set them up from Shortcuts on the Mac. (Create a new shortcut, select ChatGPT from apps, and add which action you’d like to assign.)

ChatGPT offers two shortcuts: Ask ChatGPT , and Start voice conversation with ChatGPT .

Using the iPhone, I’ve used Ask ChatGPT as a lock screen launcher and occasionally assigned Start voice conversation with ChatGPT to the Action button on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. (I primarily use the Action button to launch Camera. It can get awkward when I forget I changed it, go to take a photo, and ChatGPT opens a voice conversation…)

The system-wide keyboard shortcut fulfills my need for Ask ChatGPT . I’m sure more savvy Shortcuts users could cook up some useful versions of it. It’s the Start voice conversation with ChatGPT action that I think has potential on the Mac. See below:

The only tweak I needed for the Mac is to include it in the menu bar folder and assign Control + Space as the keyboard shortcut to run the action. You can also add an icon to the Dock for initiating a voice conversation. The shortcut even works when the ChatGPT Mac app is closed.

Assistant to the voice assistant

People have already been using ChatGPT voice on iOS to create a generative AI version of Siri. Having this same capability on the Mac enhances voice assistant features on the desktop too. I’ll have to spend more time with it before I determine whether or not actually using ChatGPT voice on the Mac is a good fit, but I think it has potential.

Of course, Siri itself will hopefully learn a thing or two with OpenAI’s help in iOS 18 and macOS 15. We’ll find out for sure on June 10 when Apple unveils its upcoming software improvements.

Oh, and lastly, there’s another way to use ChatGPT and Shortcuts. It turns out ChatGPT is pretty good at giving you step-by-step instructions for how to make a shortcut based on what you’re trying to do. Now imagine a world where Siri and the Shortcuts app itself uses generative AI to integrate that sort of feature directly and with more system access.

Note that OpenAI is still in the process of rolling out its Mac app to all users.
