Apart from admiring this incredible spot in nature, it’s also a place to go for a refreshing dip. Be prepared, though, that the water is numbingly cold, with a constant temperature of just 10 degrees Celsius, even in the heat of summer. It does say that you’re not allowed to swim, but plenty of people do so (there was a guard patrolling, and he only asked people not to jump from the platform). Nevertheless, make sure to wear no products that contain harsh chemicals. Read more about the best reef-safe sunscreens.

Tip: Get there early to avoid the crowds. In the summer, it can get quite busy in the afternoon, and there’s only a small part where you can get into the water (as the current’s too strong everywhere else).

If you’d rather not go swimming, there are a few short walking trails in the area and a couple of restaurants where you can get a refreshing drink. Expect to spend an hour or two in the area, soaking up the tranquil atmosphere. The entrance fee costs just 50 LEK (0,50 USD).

With its crystal clear waters and hidden coves, Ksamil is a popular beach destination, and as the word gets out, the town should see growth over the years, considering its affordable prices !

The only slightly negative point for some of the beaches in Ksamil is some beaches here have pebbles instead of soft sand. No problem, if that’s something you’d like to avoid, make sure you visit one of the beaches with sand.

NOTE : All the beaches in Ksamil have smaller shorelines, and all have sunbeds for rent. Coming with your towel to the beach isn’t practical because there isn’t any room, and I’m sure it’s not allowed.

Here is a list of the best beaches in Ksamil for you to visit. I’ve included a mix of lively beaches as well as quieter secluded beaches as well!

Beach Tip: It’s best to book a sunbed on the beach in advance during the summer holidays. Sunbed spots at the beaches in Ksamil fill up quickly. A sunbed usually costs 1000 – 2000 LEK / $11 – 21 US for the day – The price may be for 1 or 2 sunbeds; it’s different at every beach.

Ksamil Beach

This is the main beach in Ksamil and the most popular beach in town because of its convenient central location. Because of its great location, Ksamil Beach gets very busy. Nonetheless, it’s also one of the best beaches in Ksamil.

Expect perfect turquoise water here; this beach has some of the most transparent water in town. Also, the bay here is calm, ideal for kids and those who aren’t great swimmers.

Sunbeds at Ksamil Beach will cost you around 1000 – 2000 LEK / $11 – 21 USD for the day.

Directly behind the beach shoreline are plenty of bars and restaurants, which I found pretty convenient!

Lori B each

Lori Beach is located just seven minutes from the main beach in Ksamil and is one of the most beautiful beaches. The sand is much softer than Ksamil Beach, but the shoreline is smaller.

The water here is shallow and calm, the entire beach is tucked in a little cove, and walking around it’s like a half-circle.

As you get there and walk the trail downward to the beach, your eyes are met with unbelievable shades of blue water and mountains in the distance. This beach reminded me of one of my favorite beaches in Thailand, Freedom Beach .

Despite being a secluded beach, it can get busy here as well. This is common for all the beaches in Ksamil. The Shorelines in Ksamil have limited space.

To get to Pulebardha Beach, use the local bus between Butrint and Sarande. Once on the bus, tell the driver you’d like to stop at Pulebardha Beach, and they’ll drop you on the main road; after, you’ll need to hike for 20 minutes to get to the beach.

Ksamil: Things to Know Before You Go

Best beaches in ksamil, best things to do & see in ksamil, best hotels & apartments in ksamil, best places to eat in ksamil, how to get to ksamil.

Ksamil is a small village along the stunning coastline of Southern Albania , just a short 15 km drive south from Saranda . Surrounded by a picturesque hilly landscape adorned with olive trees and small rural villages seemingly frozen in time, Ksamil was once a modest rural settlement primarily focused on lemon, mandarin, and olive cultivation. Today, it stands as one of Albania’s most renowned seaside resorts , experiencing a surge in popularity in recent years, and it’s not difficult to understand why.

Encompassing a stretch of the Ionian Sea renowned for its beauty, Ksamil boasts crystalline waters, sandy shores interspersed with delicate white pebbles, and a palette of aquamarine, turquoise and emerald hues that beckon sun-seekers year-round. With its burgeoning reputation, Ksamil has witnessed the emergence of quality beach facilities , boutique hotels and delectable seafood eateries dotting its coastline.

Albania Ksamil Hotel Guide

Moreover, its strategic location serves as a springboard for excursions to Southwest Albania’s most captivating attractions and to nearby Butrint , home to a UNESCO-listed archaeological park , a mere 17 km away. A stone’s throw from its famed beaches, including the famed Bora Bora Beach , lie three wooded islets — aptly named Ksamil Islands (Ishujt e Ksamilit) — accessible via boat, kayak or a leisurely swim.

Concealed amidst lush shrubbery, these islets harbor secluded beaches caressed by emerald waters , occasionally graced by playful dolphin pods. Ksamil’s picturesque setting is further accentuated by its placement between the Ionian Sea and the Butrint Lagoon , renowned for its avian diversity and mussel cultivation. Homes and hotels lining the western fringe of town afford unparalleled vistas of the sea and the iconic Ksamil Islands , while those on the eastern side offer panoramic views of the lagoon.

Located within eyeshot of the renowned Corfu island in Greece, Ksamil derives its name — meaning “six miles” — from its precise distance from its Hellenic neighbor. The proximity of Corfu, clearly visible from Ksamil’s shores, historically stirred apprehension within Albania’s communist regime, prompting heightened surveillance of the surrounding waters.

Ksamil Albania Beach

Today, regular ferry services ply between Corfu and Saranda , facilitating seamless travel for adventurers keen on further discovery. But in contrast to the glitzy summer retreats found on some of Greece’s well-known islands, Ksamil – despite its burgeoning popularity – retains an authentic charm and unpretentious ambiance , all at prices that won’t break the bank. However, don’t misconstrue this for dirt-cheap rates!

Accommodation rates in Ksamil rank among the highest in Albania . A key piece of advice is to plan ahead : the most desirable vacation rentals and seaside hotels in Ksamil are typically booked months in advance of the summer season!

Yet, amidst the growing influx of visitors, Ksamil grapples with the challenges of overtourism and unchecked development , threatening to overshadow its natural beauty. Despite its allure, the village struggles to accommodate the ever-increasing number of tourists who flock to its shores in search of an idyllic getaway.

While Ksamil continues to exude its authentic charm, there’s a sense of urgency to preserve its natural treasures for future generations to enjoy. As the world discovers the enchanting allure of Ksamil , the village stands at a crossroads, balancing its newfound fame with the need for sustainable tourism practices to safeguard its pristine beaches and cultural heritage for years to come. This is imperative for the preservation of the Albanian Riviera and its beaches, natural treasures imperiled by urbanization and disregard.

Ksamil: Reality vs Expectations

Ksamil isn’t a quaint seaside hamlet , but rather a typical village in southern Albania: concrete structures sprawl, accompanied by a proliferation of hotels and tourist amenities. Beaches become cramped in the peak of summer , chaos, blaring music and dust characterize Ksamil , and here the proverbial genuine Albanian hospitality isn’t always apparent: issues such as lack of foresight, discrimination, inflated prices for foreign visitors, and occasional unprofessional behavior can overshadow the experience.

However, simply venture away from the most touristy and crowded beaches, and you’ll uncover numerous exquisite coves , scenic vistas and natural wonders , showcasing a pristine sea and picturesque landscapes waiting to be explored. Yet, it’s essential to approach the journey with equanimity. Not everything here gleams flawlessly. Nevertheless, we’ve always appreciated the sea, the beaches and the leisurely strolls, avoiding overly touristy activities.

Ksamil boasts its primary allure in the form of its breathtaking white beaches , which offer panoramic vistas of a pristine, crystal-clear sea. Among these, Bora Bora Beach and the neighboring Ksamil Beach (also known as Plazhi i Ksamilit ) stand out prominently. With their shallow, transparent seabeds and the picturesque backdrop of the Ksamil Islands , these beaches exude a charm reminiscent of far-off paradises.

While Bora Bora Beach and Ksamil Beach are renowned and centrally located, drawing the most visitors, the surrounding region harbors a plethora of equally stunning alternatives. In fact, there’s no need to contend with crowds: numerous other beautiful beaches, including some public ones offering free access , dot the vicinity. These could be good alternatives for those — like us — who prefer to savor the beauty of Ksamil without jostling for space and without succumbing to the chaos and rudeness that often accompanies the most touristy places.

Bora Bora Beach Ksamil and Central Beach

The two most popular beaches in Ksamil are situated right in the heart of the village, just a short distance from the most frequented hotels. One is the central beach, aptly named Ksamil Beach (Plazhi Ksamilit) , which stretches along the coastline from the north to a small promontory overlooking the three Ksamil Islands . It’s adorned with fine white pebbles and hosts numerous beach clubs and bars that offer rentals for umbrellas and sunbeds, as well as a variety of bars and restaurants with scenic sea views.

For those preferring a more sophisticated ambiance, Poda Beach , located adjacent to the Poda Boutique Hotel , provides a charming setting with vistas of the islets and crystal-clear waters. Although affiliated with the hotel, this beach club welcomes non-guests with prior reservations. Prices for amenities, such as an umbrella and two sunbeds, typically range from 1000 to 3000 LEK , but can increase during peak seasons. It’s worth noting that often there’s no official price list , and especially in high season rates may go up significantly, sometimes reaching 4000 LEK or more, which is somewhat overpriced. This is common across all beaches in Ksamil.

Ksamil Albania Bora Bora Beach

Further south, across from the promontory, lies Bora Bora Beach , famed for its white sand and pristine waters. It’s worth noting that in Albania the fine sand is not natural , it’s an artificial addition to enhance the beach’s attractiveness. Almost all the beaches along the Ionian coast consist of fine pebbles and rocks .

So when you visit Ksamil , keep in mind that while it’s beautiful, it’s also partially a man-made fake! Popular among both locals and tourists, this beach boasts a lively beach bar and offers various services, including umbrella and sunbed rentals , as well as jet ski and boat rentals . At the small pier located at the far end, boats regularly shuttle visitors between the coast and the surrounding islets.

If you get hungry or would like a refreshing drink, the options around vary in quality: some places are okay, while others are real overpriced tourist traps. Among the places we tried and enjoyed were  Kristal Seafood Restaurant ,  Guvat Bar Restorant , and  Restaurant Panorama . For a seafood indulgence, consider visiting  Ftelea Fish Taverna — a good and unpretentious spot in the village, one of our favorites — or  Kristal , situated along the coastline.

Tre Ishujt Beach

Situated between Ksamil Beach and Bora Bora Beach , Tre Ishujt Beach — or the three islets — graces the tip of the promontory. Its name aptly reflects its location, nestled in front of the renowned Ksamil Islands . The proximity to the smallest islet, a mere 20 meters away at its closest point, distinguishes this beach. Even the farthest islet is just 150 meters distant.

Renowned for being one of the most beautiful, Tre Ishujt stands out also as the most coveted beach in Ksamil, attracting a constant influx of visitors. Expect crowds drawn by its unparalleled view. Similar to neighboring beaches, Tre Ishujt boasts white sands and offers amenities like sunbed and umbrella rentals .

However, prices tend to be slightly higher, averaging around 2500-3000 LEK for an umbrella and two sunbeds. Patrons of the private beach enjoy private parking, if available — a rarity in the area — as well as shower and restroom facilities. Several bars and restaurants dot the vicinity, some offering sea views.

Ksamil Islands

Located near the coastline, the three Ksamil Islands  are easily accessible via various watercraft such as boats, kayaks, jet skis, or pedal boats. The  closest island  is predominantly rocky, with a small accessible beach along its coastline, reachable by a short swim from  Tre Ishujt Beach . Among the islands, the furthest one stands out for its picturesque white beach and notably pristine waters, abundantly surpassing those of the Ksamil beaches.

Reaching the furthest island is achievable within minutes by pedal boat or by availing oneself of the frequent taxi boat services departing from coastal beaches. Round-trip fares range approximately between €10 and €20 per person, although caution is advised as some operators may attempt to overcharge. Approaching the island, it may appear as if two distinct land masses are present, thus earning the moniker “ Ksamil Twin Islands “, interconnected by a narrow pebble isthmus, albeit geologically forming a single entity.

Ksamil Albania Tre Ishujt Beach Three Islands

Upon arrival, visitors encounter a  sizable white pebble beach , typically occupied by rental umbrellas, sunbeds, and a modest makeshift bar. Despite the allure of tranquility, the beach often experiences significant crowds , particularly during peak seasons from July to August.

Unfortunately, this is another of those places that suffers enormous damage due to overtourism and the bad attitude of people : the nature of the place is incredibly beautiful, as is the sea, but it will not be difficult for you to see litter everywhere in the surroundings, old umbrellas, and rusty iron popping up everywhere. This is another sign of how this place deserves more effort to be preserved and not become a tourist money-maker.

Beyond their natural beauty, the Ksamil Islands hold a notable anecdote from Albania’s communist era. During this period of isolation, the regime enforced strict restrictions, deeming the islands too proximate to Corfu and consequently off-limits to visitors, including locals.

However, the regime exploited the islands for productivity, establishing a government-controlled plantation of medicinal herbs and farming deer and goats. Accessibility to the Ksamil Islands was reinstated only following the collapse of the communist regime in the 1990s. Presently, the islands are safeguarded as a national monument, symbolizing a significant chapter in Albania’s history.

Pulebardha Beach

The Pulëbardha Beach is situated just north of the town ( map ) and also known as Seagull Beach or Mirror Beach for its crystalline waters. Nestled along the coastline, this narrow stretch of white pebbles stands as one of Ksamil’s picturesque coastal gems. It can be reached with a short detour from SH81, the primary route to Saranda, by driving for a few hundred meters along a dirt road.

The beach, though not expansive, boasts stunning views of a crystal-clear sea , but during the summer months tends to get crowded. There is a small free area , mainly nestled between the rocks, while the rest is dotted with sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent on-site , typically priced between 1500-2000 LEK.

You can leave your car in a large car park nearby, there will probably be someone who will ask you for a modest parking fee (around 100 LEK). Furthermore, there is also a quaint restaurant perched along the shoreline that offers a delightful reprieve, allowing guests to savor local cuisine amidst a backdrop of sea vistas.

Ksamil Beach Albania

Shpella, Pëllumbave and Pasqyra Beaches

Other beautiful beaches can be found just north of Ksamil and Pulëbardha Beach: Shpella , Pëllumbave and Pasqyra Beaches are small bays overlooking a wonderfully crystal-clear sea, set in a beautiful natural landscape. Until a few years ago, they were frequented almost exclusively by locals, but now they are no longer a secret. During peak season, these beaches can also get crowded, although compared to their counterparts in Ksamil , they tend to be a little quieter.

Accessing Shpella and Pëllumbave Beach requires navigating rugged terrain. One of the most popular routes is a rough dirt road branching from the vicinity of Pulëbardha Beach, but it poses challenges for vehicles with low ground clearance. Alternatively, a longer but smoother path, accessible to all vehicles, diverges from SH81 , following the road that also leads to Pasqyra Beach .

You can park on-site (typically for a fee of 300-400 LEK) and descend to the beach via a steep concrete and rock staircase. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent. Continuing northward from Shpella and Pëllumbave, the same road grants access to Pasqyra Beach , easily reachable by car, and Edon-Bina Beach , a charming cove best accessed on foot due to rough terrain. Pasqyra Beach offers amenities such as umbrella and sunbed rentals, alongside a quaint bar-restaurant.

The vicinity surrounding these beaches hosts a variety of guesthouses and holiday accommodations , offering a quieter alternative to the bustling Ksamil . Notable options include Santa Oliva Suites , Illyrian Paradise , Sea & Lake View Villa , Vila Pasqyra , Villa Ermali , Villa Merka and Grand Seaview Apartments , making it a favored destination for those seeking tranquility without sacrificing comfort.

Monastery Beach (Plazhi i Manastirit)

Nestled along the picturesque coastline north of Ksamil, the “ Beach of the Monastery ” lies just north of Pulebardha Beach , along the SH81 road leading to Saranda. Once renowned as one of the area’s most beautiful beaches, a visit to the beach today reveals a large construction site, where a modern and luxurious residence is being built in place of the beach. Though Monastery Beach may no longer be accessible, you can easily reach the old Kisha e Shen Gjergjit Monastery atop the hill with a 30-minute hike ( map ).

Dedicated to St. George , this 17th-century monastery presents a fascinating sight, boasting authentic and well-preserved architecture that reflects its rich history. Initially the sole structure on the Ksamil peninsula, it stood south of the ancient village of Agioi Saranta , now Saranda . The monastery’s intriguing history includes its conversion into a military fort during the secularization under the communist regime. Returned to the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania in the early 2000s, it has since undergone restoration efforts to preserve its authentic features.

If fortunate enough to find the monastery open, explore its courtyard and interiors , now housing recently restored ancient frescoes. Sadly, despite restoration, the frescoes have suffered significant damage from years of neglect and abandonment. Apart from its historical significance, enjoy panoramic views of the sea and the coastline towards Ksamil. Keep an eye out for remnants of the communist era along the way.

Pema and Thatë Beach

Another beautiful Ksamil beach is located approximately 6 km south from the town centre , along a quiet stretch of coastline which has become popular thanks to a beach club that has sprung up on Pema and Thatë Beach , which was once a cherished spot for locals but has now gained widespread fame through the glossy photos shared on social media by the numerous visitors who flock here every summer.

This is definitely one of the most Instagrammable beaches in Ksamil : it features nets above the sea, canopies in the water and a bar with a spectacular view of the beach and the sea. However, it is also one of the most touristy and expensive beaches in Ksamil. Despite its relatively small size, Pema e Thatë attracts a steady stream of visitors who come to enjoy the pristine, azure waters. Facilities include a bar, a modest eatery, and rentals for sunbeds, canopies, and umbrellas, with prices ranging from 1000 to 3000 LEK. For a unique experience, canopies over the sea are available for around 7000 LEK.

Accessing the beach by car is possible by following a route south from Ksamil. While the final stretch involves a dirt road, it is suitable for vehicles of all types. From the shores, the outline of the neighboring Corfu Island is clearly visible against the horizon, marking the closest point where Albania shares its proximity with the Greek island. The road to Pema and Thatë starts in the southern part of Ksamil , near some of the best hotels and accommodations , such as Rida Village Ksamil Island , Hotel Olive Ksamil and Hotel Luxury . Additionally, there are nice beaches in this area, which are less crowded compared to those near the Ksamil Islands .

Other Beautiful Beaches in Ksamil

There are numerous beaches around Ksamil, and most of them are easily accessible by car. Just a few steps west of Bora Bora Beach lie several great beaches, including Fladeno Beach , Paradise Beach (Plazhi Paradise) , and Lori Beach . Here, the sea is shallow, and it’s never too windy because the beach is protected by the cliffs. To the north of Ksamil, there are many other less touristy but equally beautiful beaches, such as Gjiri i Hartes Beach and Edon-Bina Beach , both situated in some of the most scenic areas of Ksamil.

Beyond the beaches, the main attractions of Ksamil are the Butrint Archaeological Park and the Butrint Lagoon , a large brackish lagoon formed by the waters of the Ionian Sea. The sea flows into the lagoon through the Vivari Channel , located near the ancient town. Butrint , situated 17 km south of Ksamil, held significance as a city in Epirus during Ancient Greece , later evolving into a prominent Roman colony.

It boasts an intriguing Byzantine past and a tumultuous history during the Middle Ages. The Venetians used the port of Butrint and the lagoon as a refuge for their fleet, while under Ottoman rule, it transformed into a fortified citadel.

Butrint Ksamil Albania

Visiting the Butrint Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — you can admire the ruins of this ancient town, including remnants of Roman palaces, an amphitheater, and temples. The site features structures from various eras, such as a basilica, a theater and an early Christian baptistery. Plan for a 2-3 hour visit.

Today, remnants of the Venetian Triangular Castle , once part of Butrint’s port fortifications, are still visible. Additionally, on a small island at the mouth of the Vivari Channel stands a formidable Ottoman fortress, the Ali Pasha’s Castle , accessible only via boat tour: the boatmen sell their services around the parking lot of the archaeological park of Butrint. The price is around € 20 per boat.

The Blue Eye , known locally as Syri i Kalter , is an extraordinary spring renowned for its vibrant colors and unique shape. Nestled in the countryside of southwestern Albania, approximately 35 km north of Ksamil ( map ), this spring boasts crystal-clear, pristine water that gives rise to a breathtaking lake. The Blue Eye’s source is celebrated for its deep blue hue , which gradually transitions to turquoise and green along its periphery, resembling the iris of an eye. While its exact depth remains unknown, locals speculate it to be over 100 meters deep .

The water temperature is around 10 degrees, but it was once quite common to see people diving into it. However, swimming or diving here is now officially forbidden. To reach the Blue Eye from Ksamil , follow the signs for Gjirokaster . The Blue Eye is situated not far from the village of Muzinë , enveloped by a stunning natural park. You can park your car at the park entrance and then walk a couple of kilometers to reach the spring. Numerous restaurants and picnic spots are available in the vicinity.

Blue Eye Albania Saranda Ksamil

Saranda is a modern city with a vibrant nightlife , offering a plethora of bars, restaurants and hotels for visitors to choose from. The city also boasts a wide range of supermarkets and shops , making it a convenient option for grocery shopping at normal prices. A leisurely stroll along the picturesque promenade is the perfect way to take in the stunning views and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.

One of the main draws of Saranda is its close proximity to Ksamil , located just 15 kilometers away. Many people choose to stay in hotels in Saranda and then go to the beach in Ksamil. However, due to Ksamil’s recent massive popularity, it may be difficult to secure a room during peak travel seasons. Your Guide to Visiting Ksamil Albania in 2023

  • May 12, 2023

If you are looking for the uber affordable beach vacation of your dreams, Ksamil (pronounced Xamil) Albania just might be the perfect place for you.

Here we will talk about a few of Ksamil’s highlights. Stick around to the end for practical tips!

Graphic reads "Your guide to Ksamil Albania" With 4 pictures of various Ksamil beaches, a smiling sun, a wave, and an Albanian flag.

Is Ksamil Albania Worth Visiting?

First of all, the million dollar question! Is Ksamil even worth visiting?

Ksamil is worth visiting from about May through September. It has many of the few sandy beaches in Albania (as opposed to pebbly), and they are very beautiful!

Outside of May through September, almost nothing will be open in Ksamil. The sandy beaches are open and available, but most days it won’t be warm enough to lay out in the sun, and the water is chilly. On the random day that it might be warm enough, there won’t be anywhere to get a drink, a snack, or a sunbed.

An empty day at Ksamil Beach - Plazhi i Ksamilit

Of course if you are in the area between October and April, Ksamil is worth a quick trip, but I would not plan an off-season vacation to Ksamil . (And if you’ve been around here at all , you know I’m an off season gal!)

Is it better to stay in Ksamil or Sarandë?

If you are planning a summer time vacation where you don’t leave the beach , Ksamil is a great place to stay!

There is a wide variety of beachfront accommodation and the sand is unrivalled!

If you want to do some day trips , try a better variety of food , or visit in the off-season , Saranda (just 15 minutes up the coast!) is the better place to stay.

How do you get to Ksamil Islands?

Ksamil Islands are very close to the mainland. You can paddleboard, kayak, or get a water taxi to the islands from many of Ksamil’s beaches. Starting around mid-April, there are boats that hang out around Ksamil Beach that can take you to the islands.

In the winter time you will need to arrange a boat in advance in order to visit the islands, as Ksamil is pretty much abandoned.

Can you swim to Ksamil islands?

On a calm day, it is possible to swim to Ksamil Islands, especially at low tide. Be careful during high season, as there are a lot of boats around.

Ksamil Islands in the distance with the sand of Ksamil Beach in the forefront with a beautiful aqua ocean in between

The water around “Plazhi Ksamil 7” on Google maps, is very shallow, and a great place to swim from. The main Ksamil Beach would be fine too, for a strong swimmer.

Ksamil Beaches

From my count, there are more than 50 beaches in Ksamil and the immediate area. Plenty of spots to swim and relax on vacation!

For each of these beaches, please note that in low season the beach will be empty and everything is closed. Not necessarily a bad thing if you just want to see the sand, but it would be difficult to spend a whole day out.

Here are just a few of Ksamil’s amazing beaches:

Ksamil Beach

Ksamil Beach “Plazhi i Ksamilit” is kind of the main beach in Ksamil. A long walk down this beach will take you past several beach bars, restaurants, water taxis, and even jet ski rentals.

A blue boat floats by on the turquoise waters of Ksamil Beach - Plazhi i Ksamilit Albania

This beach is a good place to start in Ksamil if you want to see the islands or just get comfy. It is also one of the first beaches to open in the Spring, so if you are visiting in the off season, it’s your best chance to get a cappuccino on the beach.

Lori Beach is my personal favorite beach in Ksamil. We ended up stuck here for an hour when we got a flat tire on the way to Puerto Rico Beach, and it was beautiful! It’s a smaller beach, but the sand is amazing and the water is nice and shallow: Perfect for kids!

A small girl in a pink dress walks barefoot in the shallow sandy water of Lori Beach in Ksamil Albania

In high season there is a beach bar and umbrellas for rent.

Coco Beach is one of Ksamil’s more famous beaches. It has a combination of white sand and larger black rocks in the water.

If you are familiar with Croatia, the coastline beside Coco Beach is rocky and looks similar to that. It’s a very picturesque place. This beach is also fairly small.

Trees and rocks line the far shoreline of the turquoise waters of Coco Beach in Ksamil Albania

We visited in the winter of 2023 and it was hard to tell if the Coco Beach Bar will be back up and running for the summer. Coco Beach is attached to “Plazhi Ksamil 9” or Bella Vista Beach which does have a restaurant, so you won’t be out of luck if it is closed this year.

Mirror Beach

Mirror Beach is about halfway between Saranda and Ksamil, in an otherwise fairly rural area. You can take a car or taxi there, but honestly the bus makes it very easy (and cheap!) to get there.

Mirror Beach earns it’s name from all of the white rocks in the crystal clear water. From above, the beach shines like a mirror. This one is on Google Maps as “Plazhi i Pasqyrave” and typically doesn’t come up if you search Mirror Beach.

In the summer season there is a beach bar and restaurant here. This is a pebbly beach and not a sandy one, but the pebbles are smooth white ones and totally different than neighboring pebble beaches.

Round white pebbles line Mirror Beach Albania with a rock cliff overhanging the crystal blue waters

To take the bus to Mirror Beach, catch the bus from Saranda or Ksamil and ask to be dropped off at Plazhi i Pasqyrave. It’s a popular spot for tourists and one of the few official bus stops with an actual covered bench.

From the bus stop on the highway, follow the road and signs to Mirror Beach. (Or follow the signs to another beach, there are more out there, you do you!) The walk is about 1.2 km but we did not find it bad at all. After the initial uphill from the bus stop it is all downhill to the beach. On a hot day, you may want to take a taxi.

Ksamil Town

If you have been travelling around through Albania or other European beach towns, you should know that Ksamil is a little bit different. It does not have a “downtown” or pedestrian area. It is a maze of little streets where all roads lead to a beach. If you are hungry you can walk towards the main highway and you will find some restaurants, but it is nothing like Saranda or Vlora with the proper boardwalk.

Ksamil is just a different kind of vacation. It’s less of a “Europe explore trip”, and more “Mexican resort” vibes. In the actual town there is very little to do.

Getting to Ksamil

Ready to plan your trip to Ksamil?

Here are all the most popular ways to get to Ksamil.

Getting to Ksamil from Tirana

A map of Albania showing Tirana in the upper middle section of the country and Ksamil way at the bottom in the south of the country

From Tirana you can catch a bus to Saranda daily. The regional bus station is a little bit out of town. Search “Terminali i Autobusëve të Jugut & Veriut” to find the right location.

Albania North/South bus terminal to Ksamil marked on the map of Tirana

We stayed across the street at Doanesia Premium Hotel, which was just the perfect location. A short walk from both the hotel and bus station is CasaItalia Shopping Mall. (A great place to visit some bigger stores before you end up in Ksamil!)

The bus takes about 5.5 hours from Tirana. Personally, I would fly to Corfu if you have the choice.

Travelling From Corfu to Ksamil

To get to Ksamil via Corfu Greece, you will need to catch the ferry to Saranda. On the speed boat it takes only 35 minutes, and the bigger car ferry takes just over an hour.

From the Corfu airport, the ferry terminal is on the opposite side of town. In the summer you can likely catch a boat the same day, but in winter you should plan to spend the night in Corfu.

Ferry Terminal and Airport marked on a map of Corfu Greece

We were staying in Corfu, so we walked from the airport to the town and then to the ferry terminal the next day.

There are buses outside of the airport that can also take you to the town, and probably in the summer you can catch a bus directly to the terminal, but we haven’t done it. You may find a taxi to be the simplest.

If walking, make sure you head to “Corfu Port Authority Company” on Google maps. When you are walking you will pass other ferry terminals, but these are for regional ferries.

Corfu Ferry Terminal and Ionian Seaways ticket office marked on a map of Corfu town with other port areas crossed off as the wrong areas.

It is a fairly long 25 minute walk, so don’t let it fool you that the town appears to be on the port. The terminal you need is the peachy building beside a long dock on the far side of the harbor.

Buy your tickets online in advance from Finikas Lines , or stop by their office on the road to the ferry. You will see many tour operators on the left side of the road as you head to the terminal. Stop at “Ionian Cruises” where they have stickers advertising Finikas Lines.

Buying online is the easiest , but if you have a baby under 1 year, you will need to buy the ticket in person. It’s a strange glitch.

Tickets are not sold at the ferry terminal. This is very important. It’s possible that this is different in the summer, but definitely from October to March there is no way to get a ticket at the terminal. You need to get it online or from the office in advance.

Traveling from Saranda to Ksamil

From Saranda, buses depart to Ksamil/Butrint every hour on the :35 from the bus shelter across from the ruins. (On the diagonal from Friendship Park, in front of SOS bar.)

It is marked on Google maps as “Bus station for bus Sarande-Ksamil-Butrint.”

The bus costs 150 lek per adult. Kids are free. (I am not sure about the age, it seems like a guess-based system.) You do not pay as you board the bus, and you do not need exact change. There is a collector who will come and take your fare. You can also show the collector where you need to go and they will usually tell you when to get out.

Ksamil in Short

I hope this helps you decide to visit Ksamil. The most important thing is to come when things are open. We love to travel off season, but Ksamil is another story. Even the ATMs were empty when we visited in November.

May or the first half of September is the best time to visit. Most things will be open, but it is shoulder season in terms of crowds. In the coming years maybe Ksamil will see more tourists year round and things will shift.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Ksamil Islands (2024)

The Ksamil Islands are considered the gems of the Albanian Riviera . They are a series of four small islands located off the coast of Saranda, Albania. The islands are pristine, with crystal-clear water and beautiful sandy beaches.

The vibrant waters are surrounded by lush greenery, giving the islands a tranquil and eye-soothing atmosphere. They are accessible by boat and are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and more, making them a must-visit destination if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway.

But what are Ksamil Islands all about, and why should you visit them? Read on and find out!

Where are Ksamil Islands Located?

Ksamil Islands are located in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Albania, near the Greek island of Corfu. The islands are known for their turquoise waters and stunning beaches , making them a popular destination. The best time to visit the Ksamil Islands is during the summer months, from May to September.

During the communist era in Albania, the Ksamil Islands were a forbidden area to visit due to the isolation of the country. This changed in the early 1990s when the country opened up for tourism, and the Ksamil Islands became an enormously popular destination for locals and foreigners.

Why Visit Ksamil Islands?

If you plan on visiting Albania, it would be a shame not to put the Ksamil Islands on your list. They are well-known for their amazing beaches , luring in more and more tourists every year for the following reasons:

  • The amazing views and scenery are unmatched. There is no greater view than a full-on natural landscape, with only turquoise waters and vibrant greenery. What more can you ask for?
  • The Ksamil Islands are home to the most beautiful beaches in Albania.
  • There are plenty of relaxing or adventurous activities to enjoy on the Islands, such as swimming, kayaking, sailing, etc.
  • The islands are steeped in rich history and culture, offering countless sightseeing opportunities, never leaving our history lovers bored.
  • There are many good restaurants on the Islands offering delicious traditional cuisine, making sure your stomach is the happiest it has ever been.

The best time to visit the beaches is during the summertime, when the weather is perfectly warm. Be sure to stock up on snacks, sunscreen, and a protective hat for your trip; you’ll be spending lots of time on the beach.

Don’t forget a first-aid kit; you never know what’s going to happen. As for clothing, mostly bring light clothes, but pack a few layers for the chilly summer nights.

How to Get to The Ksamil Islands?

You can get to the Ksamil Islands by various modes of transportation, including car, bus, or boat.

Durrës is located on the Adriatic coast of the Balkan nation of Albania. It's a coastal city that's just a short drive away from the capital of Tirana and a popular tourist destination.

Durrës has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Tourism is a major industry there, with visitors coming to soak up the sun on the beaches, explore the ancient Roman ruins, visit the Durrës Castle, and enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine. The main economic drivers are fishing, tourism, and port-related activities.

Something interesting about the city? Durrës is home to some of the oldest buildings in the country, including the Venetian Tower, built in the 13th century, so if you're looking for an inspiring place to visit, Durrës is it!

If you start your trip from Tirana, it will take you about 3 hours and 30 minutes to get to Saranda. From there, you’ll arrive in Ksamil for another 20 minutes. Driving there is not particularly difficult, as the roads are well-maintained and the views accompanying you along the way are beautiful, so be sure to rent a car if you feel like driving around and enjoying the views.

To get to the actual islands, you can swim there in just a few minutes because they are very close to the mainland and the waters are very calm and safe.

There is actually no direct bus line from Tirana to Ksamil, so you just have to take a bus from Tirana to Saranda. The trip costs around 13 euros and takes approximately 5 hours to get to the town of Saranda.

The journey is mainly hassle-free, except for the fact that if you’re visiting in the summertime, it can get quite hot inside the bus. So as soon as you arrive in Saranda, you can take another bus to get to Ksamil, which costs about 1 euro and will get you to your destination in around 10 minutes.

#3. By Boat

If you’re more on the adventurous side, you can rent a boat to get to the islands from Saranda, or if you’re lucky, you can find boatmen offering trips to the islands.

Boat tours are also available from Saranda to Ksamil and the area around to get a better look at the islands and the nature around. An average boat tour varies from 30 euros or more.

Ksamil island viewpoint

A beach holiday in Ksamil, Albania

Our beach holiday in Ksamil was one of the highlights of our 10 day itinerary for Albania . In fact, if you’re visiting Albania with kids , the chances are you are going to end up on one of the beaches on the Albanian riviera. The town of Ksamil is a super easy one to base yourself in to explore the surrounding area. It’s extremely beautiful and it’s white sandy beaches, warm blue water and cute little beach huts has even led to it being dubbed “the Maldives of Albania” .

Ksamil is a five-hour drive from Tirana, but don’t forget to familiarise yourself with driving in Albania before making the journey. You can also break up the journey, like we did, by spending 24 hours in Berat .

Although a busy seaside town, Ksamil has a nice, laidback feel. There’s plenty of accommodation options, from high-end hotels to self-catering Airbnbs. The food options are plentiful and cheap, especially the fresh seafood on offer. Everyone we met was really kind and helpful and it was definitely the most relaxing part of our holiday in Albania.

If you just fancy getting a taster of Ksamil, you can also take a day trip there, by using the Corfu to Albania ferry .

Table of Contents

Is Ksamil worth visiting?

Ksamil is definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re travelling in Albania with kids. It’s small enough to get around easily and is very family friendly. There’s a good selection of clean, easy-to-access beaches and the sea is warm and calm, which is great for swimming. There are also a number of beautiful islands to visit and plenty of water-based activities if you’re looking for something more active.

The only warning I would give is, be prepared for a proper touristy seaside town. As Albania still isn’t a hugely popular destination for UK travellers, we visited expecting to find a quiet, sleepy beach village and it definitely isn’t like that anymore! We were a bit surprised to find the beaches packed with sunbeds and even a daytime foam party in a nearby bar.

Ksamil is a popular tourist destination for domestic travel and other Europeans have cottoned on to the fact too. Despite this, it kind of feels like the expected tourist boom has not quite happened yet. New buildings are popping up all over the place and there was non-stop building of holiday apartments and restaurants when we were there. However, many hadn’t actually opened yet and it was always easy to get a sunbed on the beach and a table in a restaurant.

Every single person we met was also so kind and helpful, from the guys who rented the sunbeds, to the waiting staff in restaurants. They also always made an extra special effort with our little adventurers, which was much appreciated.

And don’t forget, visiting Butrint from Ksamil is also a must during your stay here.

Sunbeds on Ksamil beach

How do you get to Ksamil Beach?

Ksamil Beach is about five hours from Tirana. You can hire a rental car and do the drive yourself, like we did. This is a good option if you’re planning to stop off at other places en-route such as Berat and Gjirokastra . Alternatively, you can take a taxi, which is a more pricey option or the bus, which is cheaper, but a bit more complicated. This is because the direct bus only goes as far as Sarande and then you need to either get another bus or a taxi for the remaining 10 minute journey.

If you’d rather leave all of the logistics to the experts, it may be worth booking a tour where all of the transport will be organised for you. Some options for this are below:

How do you get to the Ksamil islands?

One of the main attractions of Ksamil is the four uninhabited islands just off the mainland. These tree-covered islets are very easy to get to and are definitely worth a visit during a beach holiday in Ksamil. The closest two are actually near enough to swim to or you can hire a pedalo or kayak to explore them all. If you’re travelling to Ksamil with kids, the easiest option may be to organise a boat tour. This can be done very easily through one of the agents in the town.

Like the mainland beaches, the bigger of the islands is filled with sunbeds and can get busy during the day. So my advice would be to get there early. We went over on a boat tour at 10am and were some of the first to arrive. That meant we got to explore by ourselves before other visitors turned up. Our little adventurers absolutely loved clambering around in the rock pools. Plus, the sea is nice and calm for swimming.

Visiting Ksamil island

To get back to the mainland you can either arrange a time beforehand with your boat or call someone to pick you up. I would say this system is a bit hit and miss, as our boat didn’t turn up until about half an hour after we’d agreed. But there are always boats coming and going so you’ll never be left stranded.

When is the best time to visit Ksamil, Albania?

The best time to visit Ksamil, Albania, is probably in the shoulder months of the season, in June and September. These months guarantee good weather, that’s not too hot, usually in the high 20Cs. There are also fewer crowds at this time of year. Summer in Ksamil gets very hot, in the 30Cs. We visited at the very end of June and found we had to take our little adventurers indoors during the hottest parts on the day. If you prefer a cooler temperature, the best time to visit Albania is in spring or autumn, when the temperatures are in the mid 20Cs.

Top tips for travelling in Ksamil, Albania with kids

  • Take a high factor suncream and sun protection suits if possible, as it does get very hot on the beaches and the sun reflects off the water.
  • Keep a close eye on your little ones near the sea, as there are no lifeguards on the beaches.
  • High chairs were available in some of the restaurants we visited, but were often limited. We travel with the Tommee Tippee Portable Travel Chair Harness which can be slipped into our changing bag and makes it easy to strap your little one onto a normal chair.
  • If you’re planning to travel by taxi, take your own car seats. Although it’s the law to wear seatbelts in Albania, we saw many taxis without them.
  • There is a good choice of food in restaurants, including more basic kids meals. It you’re planning to do self-catering in Ksamil, there are a couple of small supermarkets in the town to stock up on supplies. There’s also some nice bakeries where you can pick up pastries for breakfasts and local speciality pies for lunch on the beach.

Is it better to stay in Ksamil or Sarande?

If you’re trying to decide whether to stay in Ksamil or Sarande it’s worth thinking about what you’re looking for from a beach holiday. Sarande is the more popular resort and therefore has more attractions and facilities. But it is also much busier and more built-up. Personally, we found that Ksamil had more than enough to keep us entertained during the five days we were there. We also liked that it was quieter in the mornings and evenings, before the crowds arrived and when day-trippers had left. If you’re travelling in Albania with kids, Ksamil might be the better option. But if you’re looking for a place to party, you may prefer Sarande.

I hope this post helps you plan your beach holiday in Ksamil, Albania. As always, if you have any specific questions please do let me know! Plus, don’t forget to check out my post Travelling in Albania: Everything you need to know before you go .

The Ultimate Guide to The Best Things to Do in Ksamil

The Most Amazing Things to do in Ksamil, Albania

The Albanian Riviera is certainly gaining some interest on social media, and its easy to see why! The stunning white sandy beaches and dramatic, rugged landscapes will draw anyone in. The coastal town of Ksamil is becoming more popular with tourists, helped by its close proximity to the Greek island of Corfu. In this post, we highlight all the very best things to do in Ksamil, when to visit, how long you will need to explore the area and loads more!

Where is Ksamil

Let’s start with the basics, Ksamil (or Ksamili in Albanian) is an old village on the Albanian Riviera. Located in the South of the country, this area benefits from a Mediterranean climate and a myriad of spectacular beaches. The Greek border is less than 50km (30 miles) to the south and the “heel” of Italy’s “boot” is less than 100km (60 miles) as the crow flies. But is Ksamil worth visiting?

Things to do Ksamil

How do you get to Ksamil?

There are several ways to get to Ksamil, the “Maldives of Albania”. The most convenient is to take the  ferry from Corfu to Saranda. The ferry takes around 30 minutes and is relatively low cost – depending on the time of year. There are many flights to the Island of Corfu making it a great place to start your trip. From Saranda to Ksamil is a quick 20 minute taxi or you can jump on a local bus (or furgon).

Another option is to fly to Albania’s capital, Tirana, and drive south. This is just less than 300 km (200 miles) and should take around 4 hours. The roads are mostly good and you can drive through the Ottoman town of Gjirokaster. More on that later…

The Bus from Tirana to Ksamil

Finding the correct bus station in Tirana can be difficult. Google maps isn’t always correct and there are several different bus stations across the city. For buses departing to Saranda, you will need the bus station is called ‘Regional Bus Terminal – South Albania’ and will be easily spotted as it is a very busy place! Once you are in Saranda, Ksamil is just a stones throw from here by bus or Taxi

What are the Best Things to do in Ksamil?

There are so many unexpected things to do in Southern Albania. Here are the very best things to do in Ksamil. We have also included some awesome sites in the local area for you to try out.

The Best Things to do in Ksamil – Relax on the Beach

One of the most popular summer locations in Albania is Ksamil Beach – a beach lover’s paradise! The clear green waters and bright white, sandy beaches have earned it the nickname, “the Maldives of Albania.” And it’s easy to see why!

Ksamil also has several smaller beaches, many of which are owned by bars or restaurants, so it’s often necessary to pay for a sun lounger. Saying that, it will only cost a couple of Euros (or free with a meal or drink in the off season) and you can watch the sunset over the islands with a cocktail in your hand.

If you are visiting in August as the crowds get a little crazy. However, there are no big chain hotels here and many businesses are family owned. This makes Ksamil feel like a more relaxed and blissful beach location than others in Europe.

Arriving at the beach early during peak season is the best advice we were given!

The Best Things to do in Ksamil – Explore the Islands

Ksamil has four, tiny, uninhabited islands really nearby. Actually, you can even swim to the two nearest ones!

The Best Things to do in Ksamil – Butrint National Park

A journey to Butrint is certainly one of the most interesting things to do near Ksamil!  We first heard about this UNESCO site on our visit to  Tirana  earlier in the year. Several locals advised us that it was one of the most fascinating and complete historical sites in the Balkans. They were right!

best time to visit ksamil

Roman baths, a large amphitheatre, an acropolis dating back to the 8th Century BC and, our favourite, the relatively intact basilica from the 6th century, were just a few of the ancient gems of Butrint. We also learned that prehistoric sites have been identified within the area and the earliest evidence of occupation dates back to 50,000 BC. The civilization was eventually abandoned due to the progression of the marshland.

The Best Things to do in Ksamil – The Blue Eye

Syri I Kalter  is a captivating and intriguing body of water in southern Albania, making it a great day trip from Ksamil. The Blue Eye is shrouded in mystery and local legend. The blue Eye, or Syri i Kalter in Albanian, is a natural water spring of unknown depth and chilling temperatures. The centre of the spring is a deep, dark blue, whilst the surrounding water is a fresh green fading out to the white of the pebbly shore, giving it the vague appearance of a huge eye.

Saranda to the blue eye

The Best Things to do in Ksamil – Visit Gjirokaster

There are many amazing things to keep you busy in Ottoman Gjirokaster. The city is immersed in history and bursting with magnificent Ottoman architecture. The highlight for us was the imposing castle perched above the old town. Make sure you also check out the Old Bazaar, with some great souvenir shops, and stop for a strong coffee in one of the quaint coffee shops at the side of the picturesque, cobbled streets. The Best Things to do in Ksamil – Take a Trip to Saranda

Saranda is a port city a little further up the coast from Ksamil. It is really easy to get there and won’t take longer than 30 mins by bus or less if you drive or take a taxi. Check out our guide to see the amazing things to do in Saranda

The Best Things to do in Ksamil – Hike to Lekuresi Castle

If you like history (and who doesn’t?!) there is also Lekuresi Castle to discover. Sitting on the hilltop there are amazing views over the area, the valley and the Ksamil Islands. There is also a great restaurant to try out. The castle was built by the Ottomans in 1537 as they expanded their Empire to the west. Lekuresi Castle is possible to reach on foot in under an hour, or jump in a cab and arrive in 10 minutes.

Take the Ferry to Corfu

The Greek Island of Corfu is just a few miles away from  Albania by ferry . There are many ferry companies offering trips from nearby Saranda to Corfu in the peak seasons and most of them will take around 30 minutes and cost about €20 -50. You can book online  here  and it’s definitely better to book in advance during the busy summer season.

Corfu is a busy little island with plenty to offer. Visit the Old Venetian Fortress that looks out across the Ionian water. You might even catch a glimpse of Albania on a clear day. The main town has many beautiful streets lined with cafes, restaurants and small shops. This is a great place to take a stroll and enjoy a Greek gyro and a Frappe. Feeling a bit more playful? Visit Corfu waterpark for some superb slides and pools. Or do some hiking and appreciate some of the island’s wonderful nature.

When to visit Ksamil?

This town is absolutely buzzing in the summer! Everything is open, the streets and beaches are filled with people, the clubs and bars are open all hours, the weather is awesome and there are some many amazing things to do in Ksamil in the summer!

However, if you prefer to avoid the crowds and the higher prices (still cheap by western standards) try visiting off season. Just be aware that many places go into hibernation during the winter and Ksamil becomes a very sleepy place.

Things to do Ksamil

How long to visit for?

Ksamil is a great base for exploring Southern Albania. It is possible to cram a lot into 3 days. But to really appreciate the area, we would suggest a week.

How expensive is it?

Recently, Ksamil has become a very popular destination thanks to its popularity on social media. Because of this, prices have gone up 3 or 4 times compared to last year.

We would recommend that you check the prices of restaurants, cafes, bars and even sunbeds before you sit down and make yourself comfortable. The prices in busy beach areas seem to vary wildly at the moment as people cash in on the huge increase in tourism. For example, an umbrella on the beach can be anything from €8-50 for a day. A bottled beer costs about €15 on the beach.

However, away from the beach, a coffee in the town will cost about €1.50 – €2, a meal at one of the amazing seafood restaurants will cost about €30-50 for two people and an Air BnB can be found for around €50 per night. Yes, accommodation can cost less than a spot on the beach! These are average prices during the summer months. Most things are cheaper off season.

Is Ksamil safe?

Ksamil is a safe place. As two females we never felt in danger at any point. We found people to be very helpful and curious about what we thought of their country. The only very minor issue we had was with taxi drivers, they can be slightly over zealous about finding fares – especially from tourists. Take the same precautions as you would in any other city and you will really enjoy Ksamil.

What to pack for a trip to Ksamil

Here’s a super easy packing list to make sure you don’t forget any of the essentials

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Bathing suit
  • A good book
  • Beach Towel
  • Cell phone- keep in mind that Albania is not in the EU so data might be more expensive as roaming charges will apply.
  • power bank and charger

  • Map downloaded on phone (if you’re going exploring)
  • Walking boots or comfy shoes
  • Day backpack

The Albanian language

Many Albanians in the cities speak a little English but it is useful to learn a few phrases in Albanian. Like all Balkan languages, it is certainly not an easy language for English speakers. However, any attempt is greatly appreciated by the locals. Here are a few words to try out:

Hello  Tungjatjeta (toon-jah-TYEH-tah)

Please  Ju lutem (yoo LOO-tehm)

Thank   you  Faleminderit (fah-lehm-meen-DEH-reet)

Yes  Po (poh)

No  Jo (yoh)

Goodbye  Mirupafshim (meer-oo-PAHF-sheem)

Where to go next

Ready for another adventure? Why not try some more of  Albania’s incredible beaches ?

Final note: Things change in the Balkans all the time and there is not much information online in English. We would definitely advise checking with a local where possible. We found people to be really friendly and super helpful.

Ksamil

9 Amazing Things To Do in Ksamil – The Maldives of Southern Albania

Ksamil is one of the most surprising places I have visited in the Balkans. This village is home to delicious seafood, a colourful sea and beautiful islands located a stone’s throw away from the village. I have visited Ksamil on two occasions now and recommend it to anyone travelling to Albania .

In this destination guide, I would like to share my experiences in Ksamil and provide you with the best things to do for your visit. Before I do so, let me tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Yuliia Berkuta (known as @juli_berk on Instagram) and I’m a Ukranian travel and landscape photographer, blogger and artist. I was born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Ever since I was young, I have had a desire to travel and explore the world. I had the opportunity to travel with my family and then later with my friends and husband. In 2018, I moved out from the city in hope of escaping the hustle and bustle to increase my quality of life by being closer to nature.

Right after this decision, I felt this creative energy come back into my life. The forests and fields, mountains and seas, pink sunrises and golden sunsets, flowers and fresh air, crazy adventures and new places – these things inspired me so much! Being in nature helps me express my feelings in all the creative ways I can whether it be photography, writing or painting.

Today, I have visited 44 countries and have gone back to some of them more than once! This feeling of happiness drives me to continue exploring the world and sharing my experiences on social media and my website.

Road Trip Adventure

Two Awesome Trips to Albania

The first time I visited Albania was in 2018. It was a spontaneous trip as I hired a car and drove around the Balkans for three weeks. I started in Ukraine and visited Romania , Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia, Hungry and then home.

I was interested in the Balkans because I hadn’t heard many stories about people travelling to those countries. The Balkans were unknown to me. So I decided to check them out. It was such a wonderful adventure full of inspiration and new experiences. The second time I came was in 2020 with my husband because I wanted to show him the places I saw before.

Both of my trips to Albania were part of these Balkan road trips. On my first visit to Albania, I came for a few days to discover two beautiful spots – Ksamil and Dhermi – and relax a bit along the way. On the second visit, I had more time with five days in Ksamil and three days in Dhermi. Both of these trips were just fantastic and I can’t recommend Ksamil enough!

Albania

Ksamil – The Maldives of Albania

My first impression of Ksamil was just – wow! I remember ordering a salad at a restaurant and thinking how amazing and cheap it was. The fact that Albania is cheaper than most European countries can make your experience that much better. This is true even in the resort areas of Ksamil.

Another highlight was visiting for the first time in September, 2018 and having no crowds. It was the end of summer and you could easily find a place to stay, eat, relax on the beach and park your car. The best impression was how clear and colourful the water was – the Maldives of Albania!

Hands down, the best aspect about Ksamil is the waters of the Ionian Sea. I spent my days swimming and relaxing everyday on a new beach. Ksamil consists of many beaches with different conditions: rocky, sandy, pebbly, etc. My favourite ones were: Stela Beach, Bora Bora Beach and Lori Beach.

Ksamil

9 Best Things To Do in Ksamil

1. visit the beautiful beaches of ksamil.

Ksamil is quite a small village and the main attraction is the sea. So the first thing you can do is visit the many beaches on offer. As mentioned before my favourite beaches were Stela Beach, Bora Bora Beach and Lori Beach but you can also hire a car and discover more beaches nearby like Pulebardha Beach, Plazhi i Krorezes and Shpella e Pellumbave.

Ksamil

2. Watch the Sunset from St. George’s Monastery

This monastery is an ancient Orthodox monastery located halfway between Ksamil and Saranda. If you hire a car you can drive to the monastery and take in a majestic sunset. Usually the monastery is closed – so visitors won’t be disturbing anyone by visiting. Just make sure you respect this place.

3. Visit the Salt Lagoon of Lake Butrint

Located on the other side of Ksamil is Lake Butrint – a beautiful salt lagoon surrounded by dense forested hills, a rocky coast and full of saltwater and freshwater marshlands. I recommend visiting to try the mussels at The Mussel House Restaurant on the lake. They were the best mussels ever!

4. Discover the History of Butrint National Park

Butrint National Park is a must-see if you have time and are interested in nature and history. This park is 9,400 hectares in size and is home to freshwater lakes, hilly landscapes and many other natural treasures.

There are endless species of plants and animals to discover in the national park, as well as the islands of Ksamil and other historically important archeological sites that date back centuries. These include ancient Roman ruins, some of which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

5. Explore the Fascinating Cave of Kreshmoi

The drive from Ksamil to the Cave of Kreshmoi takes less than an hour and is worth it especially for those who love archeology. It’s one of the oldest inhabited caves in Europe that archeologists believe is 20,000 years old.

6. Spend a Day or Two in the Nearby Saranda

Saranda is a nearby town to Ksamil where you can relax on the beaches, watch the sunset from Lekursi Castle, visit the Monastery of 40 Saints, and enjoy the local food and drink at the many fantastic cafes and restaurants.

7. Marvel at the Waters of “The Blue Eye”

The Blue Eye is a natural spring located near the village of Muzine. You can easily drive here from Ksamil. This spring is famous for its clear blue waters that give the name “The Blue Eye”. The depth of the spring is believed to be more than 50 metres as divers have descended that far. A fascinating place to visit for the afternoon on your travels around Southern Albania.

8. Day Trip to the UNESCO City of Gjirokaster

Gjirokaser is a UNESCO city located an hour and a half away from Ksamil. The Old Town is known for its stone houses and architecture. This destination is also home to one of the most incredible castles in Albania, which you could spend hours exploring and learning about the history.

9. Take a Short Boat Ride to Corfu in Greece

From Saranda it’s possible to take a short boat ride to the beautiful Greek Island of Corfu . You can easily add this island to your Albania itinerary and then move onto exploring more of the Greek Islands in the Ionian Sea.

Tips for your Visit to Ksamil

  • Ksamil consists of many small beaches with umbrellas. They are paid umbrellas normally starting from 4 Euro. Just remember to find the ones which are comfortable and are in the best position for you.
  • The village of Ksamil is a cheap place to relax but prices in restaurants are higher the closer you get to the sea. The restaurants are cheaper the further away you go from the sea – some are even half the price!
  • Many places in Ksamil don’t accept cards, so it’s best to visit with cash.
  • Unfortunately, there is a bit of rubbish on the streets of Ksamil. But don’t worry, the sea is very clean. Make sure you don’t litter on your visit.

Thanks for reading everyone and enjoy your trip to Ksamil in Albania!

13 Best Beaches in Ksamil, Albania (2024)

  • January 22, 2024
  • by Jenoa Matthes

Ksamil, Albania is quickly becoming one of the most desirable beach destinations in Europe. Located in the Albanian Riviera, the beaches in Ksamil offer a bit of paradise along the Ionian Sea!

With Ksamil’s stunning white sands and crystal clear, turquoise waters, you’re sure to have an incredible vacation soaking up the sun in Albania.

best time to visit ksamil

We spent one week testing out all of the best Ksamil beaches, and we’re sharing our favorites in this article.

At the end of the article, you’ll find some tips to help you plan your trip to Ksamil, such as an Albania travel planning guide , where to stay in Ksamil, and the best ways to get to Ksamil.

From hidden gems to the most popular beaches, come and explore the 13 best beaches in Ksamil that you won’t want to miss!

13 Best Beaches in Ksamil

1. ksamil beach.

best time to visit ksamil

Ksamil Beach (Plazhi Ksamilit) is one of the most popular beaches in Ksamil. The white sandy beach and crystal clear water make it one of the most beautiful spots in the Albanian Riviera.

Located in a small cove, Ksamil Beach is conveniently located and is the perfect spot to relax for the day. The water at Ksamil Beach is usually calm and has some shallower parts that are nice for wading in.

As with most of the beaches in Ksamil, you have to pay to rent beach chairs and umbrellas for the day . The cost is usually between 1,000 to 2,000 lek ($10-$20) for two beach chairs depending on the time of the season. It’s always cheaper to rent the chairs in May and September.

If you’re looking for a bit of an adventure, you can hire a motorboat with a driver for a couple of hours. They’ll take you around the islands and give you a little tour of the area for around 3,000 Lek ($30).

Otherwise, we highly recommend renting a kayak or a paddleboat for a few hours and exploring the islands on your own. You can find paddleboat rentals right on the beach for around 1,000 Lek ($10) per hour.

best time to visit ksamil

There are plenty of amenities nearby (right behind the beach), so you never have to go too far if you need to get something to eat or pick up a snack from the market.

Just a 6-minute walk from the beach is a delicious spot for gyros called Beshiku. They are super fast, cheap, have take away, so you can grab a gyro and head back down to the beach to eat.

While this is one of the larger beaches in Ksamil, it can get really busy and crowded during the summer months. To make sure you get a spot, you may have to arrive earlier in the morning to get a prime location and to snag a beach chair rental for the day.

2. Lori Beach

best time to visit ksamil

Lori Beach is one of our favorite beaches in Ksamil! This beautiful private beach feels like a slice of paradise with its stunning turquoise waters and white sand.

The beach is secluded in a bay, which helps to keep the water calm and the winds out. It’s also nice and shallow, so you can dip your toes in if you don’t feel like swimming.

Since this is a private beach, you must rent beach chairs and an umbrella in order to stay at the beach. The cost is around 1,500 lek ($15) for two chairs during the high season.

Due to its small size, the beach can fill up quite fast during the summer. Arrive early to secure a spot. Some of the hotels nearby, like Delight Hotel, have exclusive (and free) access to this beach , so you are potentially competing with these people for spots at Lori Beach. Alternatively, you can just stay at the hotel and get free access yourself!

There is a small cafe directly behind the beach that serves drinks and snacks. It’s a good spot for drinks, but you’ll find better food elsewhere.

3. Augusto Beach

best time to visit ksamil

Augusto Beach is a hidden gem in Ksamil. If you’re looking for a quiet escape from all of the music and crowds , then this beach is for you.

Augusto Beach is located the furthest south, yet it is still in walking distance from all of the centrally located hotels. There is also parking located nearby if you prefer to drive.

The sand on this beach in Ksamil is made up of small pebbles and doesn’t feature the softer white sand like the other beaches. However, since this beach is less popular, you’ll have more space to relax and enjoy.

You can rent a couple of sunbeds and an umbrella here for 1,000 lek ($10). There is also a bar located on the beach where you can grab some affordable drinks.

Overall, this is a great beach for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing without the crowds.

4. Ksamil Beach 9

best time to visit ksamil

Ksamil Beach 9 is another one of the most beautiful beaches in Ksamil. Its central location makes it very accessible no matter where you are staying in Ksamil.

Sunbed rentals can cost up to 1,500 lek ($15) for two chairs and an umbrella during high season and around 1,000 lek ($10) during the off season.

As with all of Ksamil beaches, it tends to get busy during the months of June to August, so all of the beach chairs can feel a bit crammed and close together.

This is technically a public beach, but there isn’t a lot of room for sitting on the beach without a sunbed. You may have to end up renting one anyways to get a spot on Ksamil Beach 9.

There are toilets and plenty of restaurants nearby, so you have a lot of options for lunch.

5. Bora Bora Beach

best time to visit ksamil

Bora Bora Beach is another iconic beach in Ksamil! It’s a smaller beach but has a lot of amenities close by and is often considered a favorite spot amongst travelers. The white sand is made up of small pebbles, but it’s perfect if you have a chair to sit on.

Since this is a small beach, they tend to pack the sunbeds pretty tight at Bora Bora Beach. If you’re traveling to Ksamil in June, July, and August, you may want to opt for a beach with more space.

6. Paradise Beach

best time to visit ksamil

Paradise Beach is a half public and half private beach. If you’re hoping to bring your own towel without having to pay for a sunbed, then you’re in luck!

This beach is narrow, so spots are limited. The water is a beautiful turquoise blue and it’s is a nice place for swimming.

Parking is just behind the beach.

7. Ksamil Beach 7

best time to visit ksamil

Ksamil Beach 7 is another one of our favorite beaches in Ksamil! It’s located right next to the Ksamil islands , the sand is white and soft, and the water is almost transparent. What more could you ask for?

The best part of this beach is its proximity to the Ksamil islands. Located less than 100 meters away, you can easily swim to two of the islands from here and go exploring on your own.

Additionally, you can rent kayaks for a couple of hours from this beach and paddle out to the furthest island. We rented two kayaks for one hour, and it cost us 1,000 lek ($10) total. We visited in May, so the prices for kayaks may go up during the height of the season.

Ksamil Beach 7 is a nice, wide beach, so it doesn’t feel as crowded as some of the other beaches. The food is okay – we’d recommend getting food elsewhere.

Otherwise, if you’re wanting to explore the islands, rent kayaks, or simply swim to the islands on your own, this the perfect beach for it!

8. Sunset Beach

best time to visit ksamil

Sunset Beach is located on the north end of Ksamil. The beach is aptly named, as it’s one of the best places to watch the sunset in Ksamil.

While this beach isn’t quite as picturesque as the other Ksamil beaches, it’s still a great place to spend an afternoon relaxing in the sun.

You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas for a similar price to the other beaches – around 1,000 lek ($10).

9. Puerto Rico Beach

best time to visit ksamil

Puerto Rico Beach is located just across the bay from Lori Beach. You can rent a sunbed and a floating net that hovers above the water here. The cost for the net comes at a minimum of around 5,000 lek ($50) for the day.

This lively beach can often be crowded with families, but what do you expect at a beach?

The Ohana Beach Bar is located near this beach, which is a fantastic spot for drinks and food.

10. Ohana Beach

Ohana Beach is a nice, clean beach with lovely views of the Ksamil islands . The water is beautiful and clear and is not as popular as the more centrally located beaches.

There is a bar called the Ohana Beach Bar located on the beach that’s nice for drinks and lunch. While we didn’t eat at the restaurant (it wasn’t open in May when we visited), we’ve heard a lot of positive reviews and would recommend trying it.

You may want to bring water shoes because it’s a bit rocky getting into the water from the beach.

11. Mirror Beach

mirror beach albania

Mirror Beach (Plazhi Pasqyra) is located just a 10-minute drive from the center of Ksamil. This beach is truly a hidden gem in Albania and gets its name from its crystal clear water that reflects off of the sun.

To get to Mirror Beach, you can either drive, take the bus, or grab a taxi. If you are taking a bus from Ksamil or Sarande, then ask the bus driver to stop at Mirror Beach. They’ll drop you off at the bus stop on the main road. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk from the bus stop down to the beach.

The drive to the beach is a bit rocky and steep but it’s definitely doable. Make sure to arrive early in the morning during the busy season, as parking is limited and the beach fills up fast.

12. Relinda Beach

best time to visit ksamil

Relinda Beach is one of the most gorgeous, hidden beaches in Ksamil. It’s tucked away from the crowds of the main Ksamil Beach and feels like a private island paradise.

The water here is gorgeous and clean, which makes it lovely for swimming in. The beach itself is quite small, so spots are limited. There are nets available for rent on the deck that hover over the water. It’ll cost you around 10,000 lek ($100) to rent one for the day during peak season.

The restaurants surrounding Relinda Beach are some of the best beach restaurants in Ksamil. Abiori Beach Bar Restaurant has delicious fresh seafood and Guvat restaurant has a mix of seafood and classic Albanian dishes.

13. Isole Gemelle di Ksamil

best time to visit ksamil

Isole Gemelle di Ksamil is the most stunning and secluded beach in Ksamil. It’s located on the furthest Ksamil island and can only be accessed by kayak, paddleboat, or motorboat.

The beach is very narrow and connects to larger land masses together. The views of the greek island of Corfu are incredible, and you feel completed isolated from the rest of Ksamil.

The best way to see the island is to rent a kayak or paddleboat, so you have flexibility and freedom to explore. We rented kayaks to visit the island from Ksamil Beach 7, and it was by far our favorite activity during our time in Ksamil.

There are no amenities on this beach, so you’ll need to bring your own food and drinks if you plan to spend the day here.

The actual beach can fill up fast during the summer, but there are plenty of spots available up on the rocks above the beach if it’s full.

The Ksamil Islands Albania

best time to visit ksamil

The Ksamil islands are located just off the cost of the mainland. These can be explored on your own by kayak, paddle boat, or if you’re up for it, you can even swim to a couple of them.

There are also private boats that will take you there, which is a great idea if you’re traveling in a group.

In total, there are three Ksamil islands, all of which are uninhabited.

Renting paddle boats or kayaks

best time to visit ksamil

The best way to explore the Ksamil islands on your own is by renting a kayak or a paddleboat! We rented two kayaks for 1,000 lek ($10) total per hour. Alternatively, can expect to pay around 1,000 lek ($10) per hour for a paddleboat.

We suggest renting these for at least 3 hours to have enough time to enjoy the beach and to explore all three islands.

Are the beaches in Ksamil private?

best time to visit ksamil

Some of the beaches in Ksamil are private, such as Lori Beach and Ksamil Beach 7, which means you have to pay for a sunbed in order to stay at the beach.

Although during the months of June, July, and August, expect to pay for a sunbed at almost all of the beaches. They really cram them onto the beach, so there isn’t much room to lay out your own towel.

The cost of sunbeds varies across Ksamil, but on average, you can expect to pay around 800 ($8) to 2,500 ($25) LEK for a set of sunbeds and an umbrella for the day. The prices are usually the highest in July and August and cheaper in May and September.

Best Time to Visit the Ksamil Beaches

best time to visit ksamil

The best time to visit the Ksamil beaches is from the end of May to June and in September. We visited Ksamil during the middle of May and the weather was cold and rainy almost the entire time.

We heard this rainy weather was unusual for May, but you never know during the spring. Additionally, a lot of the restaurants were still closed in the middle of May, as the locals were still preparing for the season.

If you want more of a guarantee for good weather, then visiting from the end of May or in June is a safer option.

The busiest time to visit Ksamil is between June and August at the height of peak summer season. Of course, you’re almost guaranteed to have fantastic weather during this time of year, but that comes at a cost of higher prices and more crowds.

How do you get to Ksamil, Albania?

best time to visit ksamil

Whether you have a rental car or are planning to take public transportation, there are several options to get to Ksamil.

Renting a car

Renting a car is the best option for getting to Ksamil . It will provide you with a lot of flexibility while traveling in Albania, and it’s the easiest way to get around.

We rented our car from Discover Cars and picked it up at the Tirana airport. The drive from Tirana to Ksamil takes around 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Public transportation

The second option is to take a bus from Tirana to Ksamil. Unfortunately, there is no direct route to Ksamil from Tirana . Instead, you have to go to Sarande and then catch the local bus from there to Ksamil.

Buses leave daily from Tirana from 6:15am – 10:00pm with several departure times throughout the day. You can check the Girafa website for an official timetable.

The cost is around 1700 lek ($17) per ticket, and you need to pay the bus driver in cash for your ticket. You do not need to reserve your ticket in advance.

Once you arrive in Sarande, go to the bus stop near the ferry port. The buses arrive every 30 to 60 minutes, and the cost is 250 lek ($2.50) each way. The bus takes around 10-20 minutes to get to Ksamil.

If you prefer, you can take a taxi from Sarande to Ksamil. The cost is 2,000 lek ($20) per car. Often, you’ll find other travelers waiting at the bus stop, and you can ask if they want to split a taxi ride to save some money. We did this with two other travelers and paid $5 per person for the 4 of us.

From high-quality restaurants serving fresh fish and local Albanian specialties to fast food restaurants serving gyros, there are plenty of options near the Ksamil beaches. Here are a few restaurants that we recommend:

  • Guvat Restaurant & Bar – Amazing views overlooking the sea and delicious seafood and pasta options.
  • Abiori Beach Bar Restaurant Pizzeria – Fantastic views of the sea with good seafood options.
  • Beshiku – Delicious and quick gyros just a quick walk from the beaches.
  • Ohana Beach Bar Ksamil – Good food and drinks with seafood and snack options.
  • Pizza Rei & Rai – Good option for pizza in Ksamil.

Where to stay in Ksamil

best time to visit ksamil

There are plenty of hotels in Ksamil to choose from for your beach getaway. Here are a few fantastic options that we recommend for your trip:

  • Delight Hotel – Located on the water next to Lori beach, one of the best beaches in Ksamil. It’s more expensive compared to other hotels in Ksamil, but you get a private pool and free access (free sunbeds) at Lori Beach.
  • Hotel Meta Ksamil – This hotel is in one of the best location and is within walking distance to the beach. Some of the rooms have balconies with a sea view.
  • Ksamil Central Park Hotel – Located just a 5-minute walk from Ksamil Beach, this 4-star hotels offer free breakfast and everything you need for a wonderful stay in Ksamil, Albania.

Ksamil Beaches Tips: Know Before you Go

best time to visit ksamil

  • Stay at a hotel to get exclusive beach access – Some hotels provide free beach access, meaning you don’t have to pay for a sunbed if you stay at that hotel. For example, if you stay at Delight Hotel , you’ll get free sunbeds at Lori Beach.
  • Avoid the high season – From late June to early September, Ksamil is extremely busy. Not only are things more expensive during this time, but the Ksamil beaches are especially busy. If you’re planning to visit during the summer, then try to get to the beach early in the morning to get a spot.
  • You have to pay for sunbeds – Most of the beaches in Ksamil are private, which means you have to pay for a sunbed in order to get access to the beach. During the busy months of June to August, two beach chairs can cost anywhere between 1,500 – 2,500 lek ($15-$25) for the day. In May and September, you should be able to get two beach chairs and an umbrella for around1,000 lek ($10) for the day.
  • Food is pricey by beaches – Due to their convenient location, many of the beach bars and restaurants charge more for food. If you’re looking to save on food, then pick up some fresh fruit and snacks at the markets in town before heading to the beach for the day. There are also plenty of cheap options in town, like gyros and byrek (stuffed pie), that are great takeaway options.
  • A lot of the beaches play music – A lot of the beaches in Ksamil blast music throughout the day, which can be a bit of an annoyance. We personally enjoy a more peaceful experience, but it’s just how it is in Ksamil. Take your own headphones if you want to tune out their choice of music or if you want to put on an audiobook or podcast.
  • Have cash on hand – While some restaurants and markets do take card as a form of payment, many do not. Make sure to stop by an ATM in town to have cash to pay for the sunbeds and for some restaurants.

Ksamil Beaches Frequently Asked Questions

Ksamil Beach albania

Does Ksamil have sandy beaches?

Yes, the beaches in Ksamil are sandy; however, they are not the softest sandy beaches you’ll ever experience. The sand is made up of a bunch of small pebbles, and it’s more comfortable to sit on a beach chair than directly on the sand for a long period of time.

Is Ksamil or Saranda better?

We briefly visited Saranda and quickly decided that Ksamil is better to stay in, especially if you’re visiting for the beaches.

Saranda is a much larger city with fewer beaches, and Ksamil feels like a beach resort town.

Can you swim to the Ksamil islands?

Yes, you can swim to two of the Ksamil islands. A couple of the islands are located less than 100 meters from the beaches, and we saw plenty of people swimming back and forth.

The third island is quite far away and may be quite difficult to swim to. It’s best to rent a paddleboat or kayak to get to this island.

Are Albanian beaches clean?

Yes, from our experience, the Albanian beaches are clean and well-maintained. The water is crystal clear and the sand is clean without much debris.

Hi, Im visiting Ksamil this August. I´m a bit concerned about the private beaches. Will I be able to just lay my towel in the sand? Or is it mandatory in all the beaches to rent sunbeds? In case there are public beaches, could you tell me which they are? Tks for your advice?

' src=

Hi Florencia,

I hope you have a wonderful time in Ksamil! Unfortunately, August is the high season, so you will have to rent a sun bed in order to stay at most beaches. They pack in the sun beds pretty tight, so there isn’t a lot of room to even lay down a towel. I have heard that Mirror Beach and Paradise beach allow you to use a towel in certain sections.

We were visiting in early May, during the shoulder season, and no one seemed to care if we used our towel because practically no one was there. However, high season is a completely different story. If you find some other beaches that allow you to use your towel, I’d love it if you could send us an update! It would be great to know if there are more that allow this.

Hope this helps.

Best, Jenoa

Dear Jenoa,

Many thanks for a nice article. Have you heard of anybody who would fly to Corfu and then rent a car (or take a cab/hotel airport shuttle) to Ksamil? If so, could you please share feedback how does it work/is it expensive? Or is it more straightforward to travel to Tirana and then rent a car?

Hi Gedzitka,

I hope you are doing well!

You can most definitely fly into Corfu and then visit Ksamil. We have an entire post dedicated to getting from Corfu to Ksamil and also a post on doing a Corfu to Ksamil day trip if you are looking into that option.

If you are planning to visit only the southern part of Albania from Corfu, then I’d recommend flying into Corfu, taking the ferry to Saranda, and either renting a car in Saranda and driving to Ksamil or taking a taxi. If you’re only visiting Ksamil, then you don’t necessarily need to rent a car. However, if you plan to explore the entire Albanian Riviera, then you should definitely rent a car in Saranda.

I’d only fly into Tirana if you plan to visit the northern and southern part of Albania. It’s a 3.5-4 hour drive to Ksamil from Tirana, so it’s much quicker to get to Ksamil from Corfu.

Hopefully this answers your question. I’m happy to help answer any other questions you may have!

Hi, Thank you so much for this helpful article. I’m planning to spend 2 days around end of May in Ksamil and will have a rental car. Suppose I stay at Delight Hotel and I have a sunbed at Lori Beach. My questions are: – If I want to move to other beaches after having spent an hour or so at Lori Beach, do I have to drive my car to the other beaches such as Sunset Beach? – If I walk, how long does it take to walk all the way from Lori Beach to Sunset beach? – Are there parking spaces at the beaches where I can safely park so that my rental car does not get ticketed? If yes, which beaches have parking? – If the beaches are not too packed, is it allowed to place my own beach towel down on the sand?

Thank you so much, Gina

We were in Ksamil in May and it wasn’t too crowded. This is a great time of year to visit.

To answer your questions:

Regarding parking, there is parking at some of the beaches and it’s usually paid. However, in May, you may not have to pay since it’s just outside of the busy season. It really depends on the beach. Alternatively, you could park up near the main street and just walk further to the beach, which is usually free.

Lori beach and Sunset beach are about a 30-minute walk from each other, so you could walk there or drive. It’s up to you. We mainly walked everywhere, but some of the beaches are a bit further out, and we just found parking where we could. Parking isn’t always clearly marked but it’s easy to find.

The beaches shouldn’t be too packed this time of year, and you can usually just take your towel. It really depends on the beach though! Some are more strict about renting a chair than others. I’d recommend taking your towel and taking some cash just in case they make you pay, but it’s worth a shot anyways.

Hopefully this helps! Best, Jenoa

Saranda vs Ksamil – Which One Is Better?

Saranda and Ksamil are two beautiful towns located side by side on the sparkling Albanian Riveria. A perfect combination of great weather, gorgeous beaches, stunning scenery and reasonable prices are the reason these charming beach towns have skyrocketed in popularity for sun-seeking tourists.

Everyone who is planning a trip to the south of Albania will be faced with the same question: should I stay in Saranda or Ksamil? Whether you’ll be stopping in on an Albania road trip or hunting for your next beach focused holiday, this article will answer all of your questions about your stay in Saranda or Ksamil.

I aim to dive into detail and give you my honest opinion about each destination. This is all based on my own experience as someone who spent 3 months living in Saranda in 2023, with plenty of time spent in Ksamil.

In this blog post, I uncover all of the important info needed to help you decide whether to book your beach holiday in Saranda or Ksamil. You can’t really go wrong with either one, it simply comes down to what you want out of your trip!

Saranda & Ksamil Overview – Which Albanian Beach Town Should You Stay In?

Having spent a lot of time in both Saranda and Ksamil, I have experienced first hand what each one has to offer. Both towns share many similarities such as stunning beaches, fascinating historical sites and a backdrop of breathtaking landscapes. However there are certain things that make them unique which may influence your decision to stay in one or the other.

Are you looking for more restaurants, beach clubs, shops and accommodation choices? Or do you prefer a laidback holiday by the sea with a white sand beach and crystal clear water to swim in? Are you on a budget and looking to save as much money as possible? Or do you want a resort with an infinity pool and private beach access?

These are some factors that you should take into consideration when deciding where to stay. I’ll discuss this further in the next section as I dive deeper into the similarities and differences between Saranda and Ksamil.

The good news is that both towns are close to one another (only 20 minutes apart by car) so you don’t have to feel as though you’re missing out by choosing to stay in one. If you’re planning to rent a car during your time in Albania, all it takes is an easy day trip to experience the highlights of the other town.

Is it Better to Stay in Ksamil or Saranda?

With crystal clear water and world-class beaches, it’s no surprise that Ksamil has exploded on social media platforms in recent years. It’s true, the beaches are pretty enough to blow your mind but there are some essential things that you should know before planning a beach holiday in Ksamil.

The time of year can play a huge part in how much enjoyment you will get from your holiday. During the summer, you’ll be fighting for limited space on pretty much every Ksamil beach and paying high season prices for food and drinks at all the restaurants.

From June – August, the small beach town of Ksamil is at full capacity with every single beach lined in sun loungers and umbrellas. It may surprise you that you won’t have the option to simply lounge at the beach without paying 20 – 40 euros for a set of beach chairs for the day.

Plazhi Ksamilit, Albanian Riviera

The main beach of Ksamil, Albania

On top of that, you’ll be elbow to elbow with the person next to you. Public beaches do not exist in Ksamil as each one is occupied by a beach club or restaurant who charges visitors a set amount to spend the day. Bear in mind that some of the beach clubs tend to blast loud music making the overall atmosphere less relaxing (unless a beach club is the vibe you’re looking for.)

Ksamil is technically considered a village and it has a more laid-back atmosphere. Considering it’s smaller size, there are less accommodation choices, restaurants and shops available compared to Saranda. Ksamil is still the best choice for those who want a beach-focused holiday as all of the hotels and apartments are within easy walking distance to the beaches.

If you want to experience the best of Ksamil’s stunning beaches with less crowds, consider planning your holiday during shoulder season. I visited Albania from September – November and I must admit that Ksamil was so much nicer then compared with July or August.

Saranda Ksamil

Stunning view from Guvat Restaurant in Ksamil

The weather was still great in September and early October with a fraction of the crowds and temperatures ranging from 25 – 30°C. I spent a day at one of Ksamil’s busiest beaches on my birthday in October and paid far less than peak season prices and had a relaxing, crowd-free experience.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want it to sound like I’m trying to persuade you to avoid Ksamil. I actually loved it there and think it’s a stunning place that’s absolutely worth a visit. However it is one of those places where picking the right time of year can make all the difference.

Having visited Ksamil in both July and September, I can tell you the difference is huge. I just want you to have an accurate picture before going ahead and booking your holiday. Once upon a time, Ksamil was a hidden gem where you’d have those pristine beaches practically to yourself in the summer but that’s no longer a reality.

Summary of Staying in Ksamil

  • Ksamil is much smaller than Saranda with less variety of hotels, restaurants and shops
  • It’s a better choice for those seeking a beach holiday with nicer beaches and most of the accommodation is a short walk from the beach
  • Because of it’s smaller size, Ksamil can feel busier with tourists, especially during the summer months
  • If you’re seeking a relaxing and peaceful summer beach holiday, consider Saranda or even Himare (further up the coast) as Ksamil is known for its loud beach clubs and restaurants blasting music during the day
  • Ksamil is more focused around tourism and many people say that the town feels cleaner than Saranda
  • If you’re planning to stay longer than 2 days in Ksamil, you might end up being bored as there isn’t much to do in the town itself.
  • Smaller town, easier to get around, has calm and safe water for swimming makes Ksamil a more attractive option for families with children.

Beach in Saranda Albania

Sparkling turquoise water and cute thatched umbrellas in Ksamil

While the beaches in Saranda are not as visually appealing as the ones in Ksamil, Saranda has a lot more to offer in terms of restaurants and nightlife. Being a much bigger town than Ksamil, there is a wider range of guest houses, apartments and hotels in Saranda to choose from.

This makes Saranda a better choice for the budget traveller or those seeking a long-term stay in Albania. As a digital nomad, I found many more Airbnbs and budget apartments available in Saranda and therefore chose to stay there instead of Ksamil. On top of that, there are many more shops which makes it easer to find certain items that you may have trouble finding in Ksamil.

With that being said, there are also plenty of luxury resorts to choose from in Saranda. If you’re hoping to stay in a gorgeous resort with a pool and private beach access, you will have many options available to you in Saranda. Read my guide on choosing the best Saranda hotel for every preference while booking your holiday.

The overall feel to Saranda is that it’s a port town with more of a buzzing atmosphere than Ksamil. If you’re seeking an active holiday and looking for somewhere to base yourself to take day trips, then Saranda is definitely the better choice.

If you spend a week in Saranda, you can easily schedule in some beach time in Ksamil or any of the other spectacular beaches on the Albanian Riviera .

Public Beach in Saranda

Summary of Staying in Saranda

  • Saranda has more restaurants, hotels, bars, beauty salons and shops to offer
  • A better choice for foodies hoping to try a new restaurant every night
  • With small pebbles instead of soft sand, the beaches in Saranda are not as beautiful as Ksamil (but still very nice for swimming!)
  • More accommodation choices making it appealing for budget travellers, digital nomads and luxury travellers
  • Saranda is the ideal base for taking day trips around the Albanian Riviera and visiting nearby beaches
  • Saranda has less of a “clean” feel compared to Ksamil
  • Saranda is better for a longer stay as there are more things to do and more restaurants/bars to try (see my guide to dining in Saranda here )

Saranda or Ksamil – Which Town Is Cheaper?

Albania as a whole is a budget friendly destination when you compare it to popular European countries such as Italy, Croatia or Greece. If you are a budget traveller looking for the best way to extend your travels, then I would suggest staying in Saranda.

Saranda offers more options when it comes to accommodation and restaurants and therefore you can choose to stay in hostels or guesthouses and eat at local restaurants. To summarise things, you will find Saranda cheaper than Ksamil as there is a wider variety to choose from.

Best Time to Visit Saranda & Ksamil

While most people imagine that the south of Albania is the ideal summer destination, I would have to disagree. During the summer (late June – August), both Saranda and Ksamil see a huge influx in tourist numbers which spoils the charm of this special place.

During this time, you can expect to pay higher prices for hotels, restaurants and beach beds. Visit Albania during shoulder season (May/early June or Sept/early October) to have a better overall experience and get more for your money.

During shoulder season the restaurants, hotels and beaches are less crowded, prices are lower and the weather is still great. I also love to support the local businesses when things start to get quiet.

Kakome Beach, Saranda

Take a boat trip from Saranda to the amazingly beautiful Kakome Beach

The south of Albania is a highly seasonal destination that sees almost no tourism during the winter months. It’s nice to get the benefits of low season while supporting the hard-working locals during a quieter period.

It’s important to keep these things in mind when you see those stunning pictures on Instagram (or even on this blog!) and hope that your holiday will look the exact same. It’s not likely that you’ll have a horrible time if you visit during summer but I feel it’s important to be well informed before making any decisions.

Tips for Visiting the Albanian Riviera

  • Book Ahead – No matter which town you decide to stay in, book your accommodation well ahead of time if you’re visiting between June – August.
  • Rent a Car – Consider renting a car for your stay in Albania as this will give you the flexibility to explore the riviera by taking day trips. Check out my blog post on the best day trips from Saranda for more detailed info. See the section at the end of this post for more tips on where to rent a car.
  • Cash is King – Make sure to always carry enough cash on you as many restaurants and shops only accept cash as a payment method. The official currency of Albania is the Albanian Lek (ALL) and you can use any local ATM to withdraw lek on arrival. Another option is to carry Euros into Albania and have them changed to lek at a currency exchange shop. This is actually the better option as ATMs in Albania charge a hefty fee.
  • SIM Cards – I recommend getting yourself a SIM card on arrival in Albania. You can either get an e-sim like Airalo which can be done online or going into a Vodafone shop when you get there to buy a regular SIM card. Either way, the prices are reasonable and it’s good to have data to help you navigate and research activities on the go.
  • Get Travel Insurance – You’ll want to get travel insurance before your trip to Albania in the case of a medical emergency or unforeseen circumstance. If you need a recommendation, check out Heymondo which is what I usually use whenever I travel. Also, you can use my link and save yourself 5% 😊
  • How to Get There – While a lot of people would imagine that flying straight to Tirana is the way to go, your travel time to Saranda/Ksamil can be made a lot shorter by flying to Corfu in Greece. Once you arrive on Corfu, it’s a short ferry ride to get to Saranda as opposed to a 5 hour bus journey from Tirana.

Ksamil Saranda Alternative – Himare

If you’re looking for a place that’s a little less touristy than Saranda and Ksamil, you might consider a smaller, quieter town along the Albanian Riviera. Himare was once a sleepy fishing town that has now become a popular stop on every southern Albania itinerary.

The pretty seaside town is less developed and therefore not as busy compared with Ksamil or Saranda. Without the blaring Ksamil beach clubs or the crowds on Saranda’s promenade, you can take in the beauty of Albania’s coast in a more peaceful setting.

For such a small town, Himare has a lot to offer. It’s home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the Albanian Riviera , great beachfront restaurants, fascinating history and plenty of accommodation options.

Getting there is easily done by renting a car and following the coastal road for just over an hour north of Saranda. It’s the perfect addition to your Albania road trip itinerary but it also makes for a great beach holiday on its own. You can also catch the bus to Himare from Saranda’s town center at 800 lek per person.

Where to Rent a Car in Saranda

Renting a car for your stay in Albania is the best option for getting around. It’s affordable, easy to do and will provide you with flexibility to plan your day trips and stop wherever you like.

You can expect to pay around 25 – 35 euros per day for a small car in Albania. Once you arrive in Saranda, simply pop into one of the local car rental shops to pick up a car. Depending on what time of year you’re visiting, you might want to organise this prior to your arrival, check out this website for more details on booking your car rental online.

If you’re hoping for a relaxing holiday by the beach, stay in Ksamil and take a day trip to Saranda.

For me, it made sense to stay in Saranda as I was seeking a budget-friendly apartment surrounded by shops and different restaurants to try out. I also found that Saranda was perfectly situated for taking day trips to places such as Gjirokaster, Himare, the Blue Eye and all the amazing beaches around the Albanian Riviera.

Albania Tour Guide

How to get to Ksamil Albania?

Ksamil beach is simply the most beautiful beach in Albania. The Albanian Riviera has many lovely beaches. But Ksamil is a paradise with little islands. So, how do you get to Ksamil Albania? I did some research and decided to turn it into a helpful blog post.

How to get to Ksamil Albania? You can get to Ksamil beach by flying to Tirana airport or to Corfu airport. From Tirana airport, it takes 5.5 hours to travel by bus, taxi or car to Ksamil. If you fly to Corfu airport, you can take a 30 – 70 min ferry boat to Albania. From the port, it takes 10-30 min by bus or by taxi to Ksamil.

Ksamil beach is the highlight of the Albanian Riviera in the south of Albania. But it is not that easy to get to Ksamil beach. There are no train connections. And the airport in Tirana is not close to the beach. So let’s explore the best ways to get to Ksamil beach.

What airport should you fly to, if you want to go to Ksamil, Albania?

To get to Ksamil beach in Albania, you can fly to two airports:

1. Tirana International Airport 2. Corfu airport

Whether it is better for you to fly to Tirana airport or Corfu airport, depends on your travel plans. Below, I will discuss both airports and the route to Ksamil beach.

Should I fly to Tirana airport, if you want to go to Ksamil, Albania?

Tirana airport is the only airport in Albania. However, it is not that conveniently located, if you want to visit Ksamil. Because the airport is in the center of Albania, whereas Ksamil beach is in the ultimate south of Albania.

It takes 5 hours and 30 minutes to travel from Tirana to Ksamil. Because Tirana airport and Ksamil beach are not close to each other. So after your airplane lands at Tirana airport, you need to spend 5,5 hours in a car, bus or taxi to get to your destination in the south of Albania.

Disadvantage:

  • Tirana airport is quite far from Ksamil beach So, if you only want to visit Ksamil, it is better to fly to Corfu airport instead.
  • There are many touristic attractions and beautiful sights between Tirana airport and Ksamil beach.
  • Make a round-trip through Albania. If you take a few day to travel from Tirana to the south, you can visit many beautiful places on your way to Ksamil.

Corfu airport is located on Corfu island. Corfu island is a Greek island, but it is very close to the Albanian coast. Geographically, Ksamil beach is very close to Corfu island. If you stand on the beach in Ksamil, you can actually see Corfu island across the sea.

It takes between 1-2 hours to travel from Corfu airport to Ksamil. Firstly, you travel from Corfu airport to the Ferry Port of Corfu, which takes 10-20 minutes. • You need to switch transportation a few times. First, the airplane. Second, the bus or the taxi to the ferry port. Thirdly, the ferry boat. And finally, the bus or taxi from the ferry port to Ksamil beach.

Destination swaps: cheaper alternatives to traditional holiday hotspots

Holidaymakers are seeking the same travel experience in lesser-known locations

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Sandy beach, with beach umbrellas, and clear blue sea of Ksamil, Albania

Our holiday habits are changing in a bid to "avoid the impact of over-tourism, save money and make new discoveries". Holidaymakers are increasingly on the lookout for "alternatives to more obvious holiday hotspots", and opting for "step-sibling" destinations that offer a similar experience.

According to the British Airways Travel Trends Report , released last week, 31% of UK consumers said they would opt for "lesser-known alternative locations".

This type of thinking "outside the box" will become more commonplace in 2024 and 2025, as "travellers become more curious about less well-known locations, consider their environmental impact and take inspiration from insider recommendations on social media that might be cheaper or offer more value".

So where are the alternative destinations that can compete against the originals?

Dubai welcomed over a million UK tourists last year, but it has a neighbouring "smaller substitute", said The Sun . The northernmost emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, usually referred to as "RAK", often "flies under the radar when people think of the United Arab Emirates", but it's a great – and cheaper – alternative to Dubai. RAK is known for its "endless miles of terracotta-coloured coastline, desert, and year-round warm weather", and you can swim, relax, shop, head off on a desert safari or experience the world's longest zip line.

Imagine a trip to the Maldives, and "a stilted, over-water hideaway is the first thing many people picture", said The Independent . However, there are other options for "over-water opulence", with stays offering the same sense of "serenity and luxury".

On the "pint-sized Belizean island" of Cayo Espanto, there are just seven sea villas, while in the Banyan Tree Mayakoba Resort in Mexico's Playa del Carmen, the villas are set on "wildlife-filled waterways". In Malaysia, the St Regis Langkawi is "less over-water villa and more over-water palace", while the lake villas in Thailand's Khao Sok national park have views of "forested mountains, bird-dotted limestone cliffs and the lake's emerald-green water".

Closer to home, Europe has several destination doppelgangers for beach holidays – for a "fraction of the price", said The Telegraph . Instead of "crowded favourites", head instead to "stunning secret seaside spots" in Eastern Europe.

This can net serious savings, with half-board in a four-star hotel from £35 per person per night, compared with "a similar stay in Marbella" at upwards of £500. Holiday spending is likely to be lower too, said the newspaper, with a sunset cruise priced at £15 in Montenegro compared to £55 in Mykonos, with sunbed and umbrella hire costing £10 and £50, and cocktails coming in at £4 and £14.

Among other recommendations are Albania's "very own 'Ionian Pearl'", the Ksamil Islands; the "mesmerising emerald pool" of Kravica Waterfalls, Bosnia and Herzegovina; the "Hungarian Sea" of Lake Balaton, and "21 miles of silky, white sand beach" in Jūrmala, near the Latvian capital, Riga.
