Tours depart from Navy Pier daily from May through September at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. Note that the 1 p.m. sail is all about the history of piracy in the area. Tall Ship Windy also offers nighttime cruises on select days to correspond with Navy Pier's seasonal Fireworks at the Pier show.

During the cruise, an expert guide will share the history of Chicago and the landmarks that created its iconic skyline. Along with the entertaining commentary, you'll enjoy photo-worthy views of lakefront attractions. Reviewers rave about the tour, saying that the views are superb and the speedboat makes for a thrilling ride.

The tour, which operates from March through October or early November, departs hourly every day starting as early as 11 a.m.; exact departure times vary by day. Keep in mind that the tour is not recommended for pregnant women or people with neck or back injuries. Prefer a more low-key ride? Sit back, relax and take in the dramatic scenery of the Chicago skyline with this tour of Lake Michigan. The prerecorded narration will help you learn about Chicago's most famous buildings, such as the Willis Tower, and how they came to life. Along the short cruise, you'll have just enough time to take in the views and enjoy a drink or snack from the bar. Visitors love the tour for the views and history lesson, though some complain it was difficult to hear the narration from the back of the boat. They also advise future riders to bring a jacket because it gets cold on the water.

Tours depart daily in the spring, summer and early fall multiple times a day, weather permitting. Shoreline Sightseeing also offers architecture tours on the Chicago River.

Tours & Boats – 90-Minute Architecture Boat Tour

Price: Adults from $49; kids from $25 Duration: 1.5 hours

Tour-takers say this boat ride is entertaining and educational thanks to the informed guides. You'll see Chicago's many famous buildings up close as guides tell stories of the city's history. Cruise departures vary by month and day. Boats depart from River City Marina, which is about a mile west of Grant Park. The Lake Express ferry made history as the first high speed auto passenger ferry in the United States on June 1, 2004 when it re-established the historic Lake Michigan ferry route between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Muskegon, Michigan. Crossing Lake Michigan in just 2-1/2 hours, the Lake Express established new standards for Great Lakes ferry service, cutting hours from previous record crossing times and hours from the typical trip around Lake Michigan through Chicago’s congested tollway system.

The modern Lake Express launched with a full complement of modern conveniences and amenities not available elsewhere. Since that first crossing, Lake Express has continued to set standards for Lake Michigan, offering the more daily sailings and the longest operating season on Lake Michigan.  Take the Lake Express ferry on your next trip and discover the freedom, relaxation and convenience that comes when you leave driving behind.

Beautiful sunset over the lighthouse in Muskegon Michigan at the beach

Is there a ferry from Chicago to Michigan?

Many people consider the coastlines of the Great Lakes to be some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. You can experience the brilliant sunsets, tranquil waters, and charming lakeside communities of the Great Lakes easily by traveling from Chicago to the great state of Michigan.

Although there is no direct ferry from Chicago to Michigan, you still have plenty of options. There are two car ferries that cross Lake Michigan from Wisconsin. You also have plenty of flights and two routes to drive, depending on which peninsula you want to visit.

Chicago is perfectly at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, just a short drive or flight from the state of Michigan. Continue on to learn more about the best ways to get to Michigan from Chicago and what to do when you arrive.

There is no direct ferry from Chicago to Michigan. However, you can easily drive north to Wisconsin to take a car ferry to two different cities on the Michigan coast.

The Lake Express Ferry (a vehicle ferry) departs from the city of Milwaukee and arrives on the other side of the lake in Muskegon, Michigan. The journey will take 2 hours and 30 minutes, crossing the great inland sea known as Lake Michigan.

Ferry on Lake Michigan going to dock on a sunny day

You can drive on and off the ferry with your car so you can easily begin your Michigan road trip right after arriving in Muskegon.

There are 4 trips daily during the spring and summer, starting in early May, and 6 trips daily during the peak of the summer months. In winter, the lake often freezes over, so the ferries only last until October.

There is also the SS Badger Car Ferry (vehicle ferry) which departs Manitowoc to Ludington. Manitowoc Dock is about 2 hours and 45 minutes north of Chicago.

This journey will also take about 2 hours and 30 minutes. You can easily drive your car on and off the ferry and continue your road trip once you reach the shores of Ludington.

Just like the Lake Express Ferry, the SS Badger Car Ferry operates from May to October only.

How to reach Chicago from Milwaukee

The ferries from Wisconsin to Michigan are fun options if you're driving from Chicago. However, because of the area's severe winters, they only run from late spring to early fall. If you want to explore the state of Michigan in the winter months and get there quicker, it's preferable to drive or fly from Chicago.

You can easily drive south from Chicago around the southern shores of Lake Michigan to reach Michigan. Depending on your desired destination this could be starting from I-90 E to I-94 E and would take at least 1 hour 45 mins to get to Benton Harbor, the first larger city you would come to, or up to 3 hours to reach Grand Rapids.

Alternatively, you can drive north through Wisconsin and into the great wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This lesser-explored part of the state has plenty of natural wonders and gorgeous beaches. Plus, it shares a shoreline with Lake Michigan and the largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior.

Path To A Sunset Beach. Winding trail through dune grass leads to a sunset beach on the coast of the inland sea of Lake Michigan. Hoffmaster State Park. Muskegon, Michigan.

It's also possible to fly from Chicago to Michigan, with several flights daily to many cities within the state, like Detroit, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and more. This is the more direct route and if you rent a car at the airport, you can continue exploring the state by road.

How to drive from Chicago to Milwaukee

Driving from Chicago to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is very easy and direct. It usually takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Depending on the weather, traffic and delays may impact on the driving time.

To get to the ferry terminal in Milwaukee, take I90 W and I94 W north. Follow I-94 W to S 4th St in Milwaukee. Take exit 312A-312B from I-43 N. Then, take W Becher St, E Bay St and Access Rd to E Lincoln Ave which will bring you to the ferry.

Driving to Manitowoc from Chicago

It's very easy to get to Manitowoc from Chicago. First, drive north on I-94 W and continue north through Milwaukee.

From Milwaukee, hop on I-43 N and continue along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Drive north until you reach US-10 via exit 144. Continue on US-10 into Manitowoc. The S.S Badger Car Ferry Service is located right downtown, off US-10.

Driving directly from Chicago to Michigan

From Chicago, get on I-90 to Gary, Indiana. After you reach Gary, take the exit onto I-94 east, towards Detroit. Continue northeast and into the state of Michigan.

To get to Grand Rapids, continue on I-94. Take the exit to I-196 which follows the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan and curves inland and into Grand Rapids.

To get to the Upper Peninsula, start in Chicago and head north on I-94 through Wisconsin. Continue on I-43 and drive through Green Bay. Continue north on M-35 into Escanaba. From here, you can easily reach other towns and cities in the Upper Peninsula.

How long does it take to reach Michigan from Chicago by ferry?

Boarding the car ferry to Michigan begins 90 mins before departure. Arrive at least 45 mins before departure so you can have a stress-free time getting on board.

Always double-check the exact check-in and departure times with the ferry operator or booking agent. Once on board, the ferry usually takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The journey is usually smooth and pleasant. However, Lake Michigan occasionally experiences storms and large waves. If you get seasick easily, check the weather before taking the ferry.

How much does it cost to take the ferry to Michigan?

* All prices are calculated at the time of writing and are based on a single journey including 1 adult ticket

The Lake Express Ferry, traveling between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Muskegon, Michigan, costs $105 per person one way. You can save money by purchasing a round-trip ticket for $181 per person. Prices don't vary by time of year.

The S. S. Badger Ferry service between Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan, costs $85 one way and $155 round trip. From May 18th to June 8th and September 5th to October 9th the prices are even cheaper at $74 one-way and $135 round-trip.

Which ferry port should you choose as your destination in Michigan?

If you're taking the Lake Express, you'll arrive at the Muskegon Terminal. This ferry terminal is located right downtown and close to major routes to continue on your drive through Michigan.

The S.S. Badger Car Ferry arrives at Ludington Dock, in the small city of Ludington. Again, the ferry terminal is located downtown and close to the main roads that will take you throughout northwest Michigan.

Things you need to know about traveling to Michigan from Chicago

Michigan is a beautiful state to visit but like anywhere else in the north, you need to be prepared for cold weather and empty spaces.

Always check the weather before departing. Michigan can experience heavy snowfall in the winter because of the lake effect snowfall.

Any time of year, you should be prepared for driving long distances with few amenities, especially in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan has some big cities, but much of the state remains rural. It's best to plan ahead by stocking your snacks, fueling up when you can, and making a great playlist for long drives.

Best time to visit Michigan

The best time to visit Michigan is in the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Winter is beautiful, but often difficult for a road trip because of the heavy snowfall and occasionally icy roads.

Summer has the best temperatures and mildest weather. However, this is also the prime tourist season and some places like the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Traverse City get busy.

Fall is a pleasant time to visit as the weather remains nice and temperatures are mild. There are also plenty of exceptional roads where you can enjoy the fall colors.

Keep in mind that both ferries operate between May to October, so if you are traveling during the colder months, you will need to drive directly from Chicago to Michigan instead.

Things to see once you reach Michigan

Michigan is a beautiful state where you can find a bit of everything, from parks with infinite hiking, magnificent coastal views and beaches, quiet towns with charming boutique shops, or big cities full of excitement. Below are some highlights of this wonderful destination.

Sailing routes & distances.

The ideal sailboat size will depend on how many people you plan to have on board and how long you’ll be spending on your boat. As a standard sailboat for Lake Michigan, you should ideally look at 27-feet or longer. Something like a Catalina 30 is a great choice for the Great Lakes. Ideally, you’re not looking for anything too big and a boat with a shallow draft to cope with shallower regions on the lakes.

Lake Michigan is a 300 mile (494km) long freshwater lake. It is the third largest of the Great Lakes, with a surface area of 22,300 square miles or 58,000 km squared.

You can sail on Lake Michigan from mid-May to mid-October. Generally, the water temperature stays low until late June and early July. As a result of midwest weather patterns, the winds get less predictable during August and early September.

Squalls tend to be common and can present a challenge to smaller boats. The wind pattern and velocity on Lake Michigan can also get quite high which can lead to big waves. The changeability of the conditions means a storm can quickly roll in before calming just a few hours later. Summer thunderstorms can be particularly dangerous and are difficult to predict.

It is easy to get hold of detailed local forecasts for wind and weather so use them to judge when it’s best to go out. The winds on Lake Michigan are usually predictable well in advance so they’re easy enough to avoid. That being said, it’s wise to stick to the coast until you’re confident you have a good understanding of the conditions as they can change quickly. Common sense is your best guide.

boat trips from chicago to michigan

Sailing on Lake Michigan is nicest when the temperature starts to climb but before the warmer temperatures start to unsettle the weather patterns. This means that the best time to sail is around mid-summer, between June and July.

Whatever time of year you sail on Lake Michigan, be prepared to have some days off the water. It’s not unusual to be hit by bad weather even during the summer months. Another thing to bear in mind is that it tends to get cold on the water at night so make sure you have cold weather gear with you.

The Great Lakes are considered to be non-tidal but nonetheless, Lake Michigan does have fluctuations in its water levels. There are twice daily tides on Lake Michigan of approximately 0.5 to 1.5 inches (around 1 to 4 cm).

Such fluctuations caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon have very little effect when compared with the changes caused by wind and air pressure, however. These create the most noticeable shifts in the level of Lake Michigan.

Similarly, the Bay of Green Bay on Lake Michigan experiences the most significant tidal shifts thanks to the local geography. In this region, levels on Lake Michigan can fluctuate up to 4 inches (approximately 10 cm)

boat trips from chicago to michigan

The wave heights on Lake Michigan vary significantly according to the wind. As Lake Michigan is not open ocean, its wave heights are limited by the fetch. The highest waves on Lake Michigan are around 20-25 feet in height, which is about 6-7.5 meters. 20 foot waves are generally rare but not unheard of.

boat trips from chicago to michigan

As the temperatures on Lake Michigan can stay cool until mid-summer, it’s a good idea to have layers of wind and cold protection with you. Even when the water begins to warm, it stays cold beneath the surface so consider wearing a wetsuit.

Thermal and fleece layers will also provide you with good insulation even when wet. You may will also need waterproof clothing in case you get caught in a thunderstorm (though these are best avoided!) and lifejackets.

If you’re sailing on Lake Michigan, it is not uncommon to have flies bothering you, some of which bite. With this in mind, you might want to opt for long sleeves and long trousers in lighter colors to avoid being bitten. Alternatively, you could use insect repellant and reapply often.

Lake Michigan is a stunning sailing destination but it’s not without its hazards. The shifting wind and water conditions can quickly catch you off guard. It’s not uncommon for sailors to be heaved overboard. Make sure all life jackets and wet suits are fitted with reflective tapes and you have whistles and flares.

Though water levels in Lake Michigan are rising, the water has also been known to recede to record low levels in recent decades. Check the current water levels before you go out and be aware of submerged objects close to the surface at low water levels.

You also need to be vigilant, even when sailing in good weather, as squalls can start quickly. If you’re going to be sailing at night, it is vital to have a powerful night light on board in order to be seen from a distance by other vessels, especially in fog, and to aid navigation.

Lastly, there will be ships on Lake Michigan that are far larger than your sailboat. Pay attention to your surroundings, especially on commercial shipping routes.

Sailing across Lake Michigan can involve a huge range of different routes, either going offshore or along the coast

Chicago and New Buffalo are situated almost directly opposite one another. To sail directly across Lake Michigan, from Chicago to New Buffalo, is a distance of approximately 40 nautical miles straight sailing. The journey can take between 2-5 hours. The exact time will depend on the conditions on the lake and the speed of your sailboat.

Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are joined by a 5 mile wide (8 km) channel known as the Straits of Mackinac. Lake Huron is 206 miles long and 183 miles wide with an average depth of 195 ft.

To get to Lake Huron from Lake Michigan, you will pass under The Mackinac Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. You will also sail past The Beavers - a collection of islands in the north of Lake Michigan - and Mackinac Island. Both are brilliant stopping points on your journey!

To sail from Chicago on Lake Michigan to Alpena on Lake Huron, the route is approximately 440 nautical miles. At a steady rate of 8 knots, the route would take roughly 2-3 days to complete.

Sailing from Chicago to Detroit involves crossing from Lake Michigan into Lake Huron. There is also the added challenge of sailing down the St Clair River, leaving Port Huron and making the way to Walpole Island, coming out into Lake St Clair.

Detroit lies across the lake and a short way down the Detroit River. It is approximately 630 nautical miles from Chicago to Detroit.

If you’re sailing to the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River is the most sensible route for exiting the Great Lakes. You’ll sail downstream from southern Lake Michigan via the Chicago River, entering the Des Plaines River.

The Illinois River will take you to the Mississippi River, just north of St. Louis, Missouri. You can choose to stay on the Mississippi River, going south past Memphis, Tennessee and Greenville Mississippi. This route takes you out near New Orleans, Louisiana.

Alternatively, a more popular route is to go from the Mississippi River, up the Ohio River and to the Tennessee River, coming back down in a loop through the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, or the Ten-Tom Waterway. The Ten-Tom Waterway is a nice inland water route and this journey is very well travelled, forming part of ‘The Great America Loop’.

Sailing the inland waterways from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico is approximately 1,530 miles.

Boater Pal

Boater’s Guide To Crossing Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is the third largest of the five Great Lakes of America. The length of the lake is 321 miles and the width is 118 miles, respectively. Crossing the lake can be very challenging depending on the kind of boat you have, the weather, and the time of the season.

So, here is some things to know about crossing Lake Michigan:

  • It takes about 10 to 20 hours to cross Lake Michigan on a sailboat going 5 knots (5.75 mph), depending on where you cross from.
  • On a motorboat cruising at around 20 knots (23 mph), it will take around 2.5 to 5 hours to cross Lake Michigan, depending on where you cross from.
  • The recommended size sailboat for crossing Lake Michigan is anything over 23 feet long.
  • The recommended size motorboat for crossing Lake Michigan is anything over 28 feet long.
  • Be prepared for cold weather especially if you plan on crossing overnight. Always bring some blankets and a sweatshirt.

The experience of crossing Lake Michigan can be amazing as long as you make sure you are being safe and going out when the weather is right. You don’t want to get stuck in a storm and have to deal with waves that are towering over your boat.

Continue reading to learn more about what you should know before crossing Lake Michigan.

Table of Contents

Things to remember when crossing Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan can create some giant waves which in turn can cause you danger and/or seasickness. If you have a week stomach, or this is your first time on a long boat trip, try to look into the horizon often and stay out of the cabin. This will help you from puking, but if you have to do it, make sure that you won’t accidentally throw yourself overboard.

Additionally, even though you can appreciate a five-month sailing season here, it will, in general, get cold on the water, particularly around evening time. Along these lines, it’s essential to check the climate before takeoff and dress appropriately.

Along with those two big points, here are some smaller ones to also keep in mind before crossing Lake Michigan:

  • Make sure you won’t get in any trouble with the Coast Guard or DNR (flairs, lifejackets, proper lighting, etc.)
  • Bring extra gas.
  • Bring extra lines.
  • Always bring more food and water than you think you need.
  • Make sure your radio works.
  • Bring extra blankets.

Check out this article if you want to know all of the DNR requirements.

What size boat do you need to cross Lake Michigan?

While freshwater boats don’t usually need to be massive, boating on the Great Lakes is somewhat really testing. Technically, you can go out on Lake Michigan in boats that are 16 feet long on calm days; however, it’s best to go out on something closer to 23 feet long, especially if you plan on crossing Lake Michigan.

Even with a boat that is 23 feet long, you will be experiencing very harsh waves. With normal conditions, you will find yourself needing to slow down to avoid smashing your boat on a rogue wave. This is why I recommend getting something larger than 28 feet long.

Here are what some boats look like that would be good to cross Lake Michigan in

boat trips from chicago to michigan

Lake Michigan waves rarely get over 4 feet high in the summertime, so as long as you believe your boat can safely take that on, you should be fine to cross. Smaller boats such as these:

boat trips from chicago to michigan

could even be used to cross Lake Michigan, but I assure you it won’t be a comfortable ride. With these boats, 2.5-foot waves are about the max they should take on to cross Lake Michigan.

Here are some boats that would not be good for crossing Lake Michigan

boat trips from chicago to michigan

Not only are most of these boats small, but their low hulls also won’t be able to protect them from the large waves that Lake Michigan will throw at them. Therefore it’s unsafe to use a boat similar to these to cross Lake Michigan.

I always recommend only crossing with a sailboat that has a cabin and another source of propulsion besides just wind. You never know how much or how little wind mother nature will throw at you, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

How Long Does It Take To Boat Across Lake Michigan?

As I said at the beginning of the article, it takes about 2.5 to 5 hours to cross Lake Michigan on a motorboat and about 10 to 20 hours on a sailboat . These times will obviously fluctuate though, mostly depending on where you are crossing from, and how fast you are going.

So I went a little deeper into this and created a chart for motorboats and sailboats that shows how long your trip will actually be.

The fluctuation in time equates to the fact that not all boats have the same cruising speed. The largest time shows a slow cruising speed at 14 knots (16 mph), and the shortest time shows a fast cruising speed at 26 knots (30 mph) for motor boats.

For sailboats, the low number is 4 knots (4.6mph), and the high number is 6 knots (6.9 mph).

How to find the best time to cross Lake Michigan

Although the experience of crossing Lake Michigan can be extremely fun and adventurous, limiting the danger of it is very important. You don’t want to get stuck in a storm or in high waves, so always check weather forecasts before you go out.

To do this, just do a quick google search on how big the waves are in your area. websites such as noaa.gov will give you the wave heights and much more information that will be useful to know. When waves start to get higher than 2.5 feet, you may want to consider waiting to cross unless your boat can handle it with ease.

Waves tend to always be larger during the offseason, so I would always recommend going in the summertime when the waves are smaller.

Crossing the Great Lakes either by motorboat or sailboat will surely be an amazing adventure as long as you take the right precautions. Always check to make sure your radio is working just in case something does go wrong, you can get help.

Mackinac City on Mackinac Island in the Straits of Mackinac Between Michigan's Upper And Lower Peninsulas on a beautiful Summer afternoon, Michigan, USA

Want to take a cruise without spending half your vacation getting to your departure point? Consider the Great Lakes, which offer 11,000 miles of shoreline and the possibility of sailing far beyond sight of land. The Great Lakes Cruise Company offers departure hubs in Chicago and Milwaukee from which you can be onboard and en route to a range of destinations in a twinkling. One classic destination is Michigan’s picturesque Mackinac Island , famous for its 120-year-old tradition of no motorized vehicles. Visitors instead get around on foot or bike or in horse-drawn carriages. For those who want to go beyond the fudge-and-tchotchke circuit along Main Street, 80 percent of the island is Mackinac Island State Park . Outfitters such as Jack’s Livery Stable offer drive-yourself carriages. However you arrive, be sure to visit Arch Rock, which affords stunning views. Delve into island lore with a short hike up Anne’s Tablet Trail, which snakes past the gazebo featured in the sci-fi romance film Somewhere in Time and on to the shrine to 19th-century writer Constance Fenimore Woolson, whose novel Anne takes place on Mackinac.
