Declan was absolutely amazing! The atmosphere was super fun and hyped and everyone was so pumped!! He is RADICAL live and super energetic! It was definitely the best and most fun concert I have ever been to and meaningful because we all got to share in a special moment with Declan and his band when they played one of their new, unreleased songs for us!! ❤ Absolutely marvelous experience, you should totally go see him if you can, he is SO fun!!!!

Seeing Declan live was an EXPERIENCE. He’s so talented and his songs are so fun to dance and sing along to. I also loved how small the venue was because it was an intimate show, my favorite types of shows. Declan is also the sweetest + he met people after the show. His opening act, Chappell Roan was the cutest and she lit up with happiness every time we would cheer her on. Both her and Declan are so talented and deserve more recognition. If you have the chance to see Declan, do it!! It’s such a nice environment and small shows like this don’t happen often, especially with growing artists.

I went to Declan's concert at the KOKO.

It was great. Music was great, support was great, everything was great... apart from one thing.

Declan or anyone else couldn't have really changed this but I felt like the crowd wasn't as welcoming as the crowds from oter concerts I have been to. The vibe from some people (not everyone some were actually really nice)was a bit unfriendly. Sometimes I felt really unwelcome. The crowd, especially on the floor, was not great. It's hard to explain. But I think it was just this concert. I have seen other videos of Declan on this tour and people seemed really nice so I guess it was just at this one. I also talked to my frends who went with me and they didn't agree with me on this, so it also might just be me.

But Declan was amazing. Loved it. Support band, Feet was great too. I've started listening to their music too.

Overall, great concert. would go again.

Declan McKenna on His Big Return and Starman-Inspired Wardrobe

Declan McKenna is the real deal. Boasting distinctive vocals, thoughtful lyrics, and a dazzling on-stage wardrobe, the 24-year-old, North London-born musician seems almost from another time, evoking the wild glamour of Ziggy Stardust in the 1970s. 

When he sits down to chat with  Vogue on a recent afternoon, he’s just finished rehearsing with his band for a headlining North American tour called The Big Return , kicking off in Montreal on May 25. (For a while, he was referring to his stretch of 50 gigs that way as a joke, but it eventually stuck.) With two records under his belt and a third forthcoming, he is eager to get back on the road. “That’s the idea for The Big Return: it’s all the hits and a little bit of chaos,” McKenna says.

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that McKenna knows how to serve up a visual feast when he performs. This time around, he’s managed to fit a plethora of chrome and satin regalia into one giant box on the tour bus. (A few shirts with metallic appliqués designed by his sister are also in the mix.) It’s all neat for now, but he’s keen to go thrifting at his various tour stops and add to the trove. “I’ve always got my eye out for stuff. I set a tone at the start of the tour and then gradually collect things while traveling,” McKenna says. Yet his curated look and high-octane stage presence are neatly balanced out by simpler pleasures, too: spending his days off by the sea, setting quiet time aside to read (he’s currently on Yann Martel  Life of Pi ), and helping his friends with their own musical endeavors. 

His live shows have often consisted of layered rock guitars, upbeat synths, and the occasional piano or acoustic interlude, reflecting McKenna's own multi-instrumentalism. “We try to strike a balance, for the most part, between a show that uses modern technology in a fun way, but one that also carries the essence of rock and roll and has sort of rough edges to it. I like to combine all of my favorite shows that I’ve been to in what I do live,” he continues, recalling gigs that left a particular impression on him as a teenager: St. Vincent headlining the Green Man Festival, Tame Impala and David Byrne playing at Coachella. “Those are the experiences I really draw from. When 15-year-old Declan walks in the room to watch Declan on stage, how do we make it the craziest gig he’s ever seen? How do we just blow his tiny mind?” he muses with a laugh. 

While his  Zeroes tour last fall focused on a theatrical performance of his sophomore record from top to bottom, the upcoming one will look to the future, offering fans both a collage of their favorite songs—for instance, a track like “ Brazil ,” which has remained popular nearly 10 years after he wrote it (even trending recently on TikTok)—and a few surprise tracks from his next album. He can’t yet share a specific release date or title, but he teases that fans can expect something within the year, describing the new songs as a sugary and groovy experience produced in the Los Angeles home of Luca Buccellati. (A producer and composer, Buccellati has worked with acts like Lana Del Rey, The Marias, Arlo Parks, and Biig Piig.) They’ve come together sporadically, a patchwork of ideas recorded in various bedrooms, sometimes with contributions from McKenna’s friends. 

But even with such an exciting year ahead, McKenna is glad to remain on nodding terms with the artist he was a decade ago. “I think my 15-year-old self would be proud. If I can go that long without ever really turning away from a song I’ve written, then that’s the kind of music I want to make,” he says. “Even if it is different from what I would make now, I want to make stuff that I still would gladly play in 10 years.”

Both long-established fans of McKenna’s and those encountering him for the first time can agree on his resemblance to David Bowie, both in sound and aesthetic (see: his penchant for artfully smudged or geometric eye makeup). That’s no coincidence—Bowie is among his greatest heroes—but McKenna is also deliberate about staying true to his own creative impulses. “I’ve listened to Bowie for a long time, and I like the idea of constantly shifting throughout your career because I’ve never, for any long amount of time, been doing a project with one sound as the main influence,” McKenna says. “I just want to explore and push myself, like that Bowie idea of your feet not touching the ground. Finding creativity where you are just slightly uncomfortable really appeals to me. It keeps me engaged.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
