Jason Isbell, Brittany Howard reveal Alabama secrets of their success

Small early moments were pivotal to Jason Isbell and Brittany Howard ’s music that’s since reached millions.
Back at East Limestone High School , Howard, the genre-fluid artiste and jaw-dropping singer, shared a janky demo CD she’d made on her computer with a bass-guitar-playing classmate named Zac Cockrell. She let him have a listen, in his car, because she thought his At The Drive-In band T-shirt looked cool. Soon, Howard and Cockrell started the band that became Alabama Shakes , the fast-rising 2010s rock-and-soul act which led to Howard’s Grammy-winning solo work.
In the case of Isbell, America’s most revered songwriter currently ineligible for social security, growing up in Green Hill his best friend was a kid named Chris Tompkins. As teenagers, when a garage band asked Tompkins to join them on keyboards, he agreed only if they’d also let Isbell join on guitar. That band, which sported matching bolo ties onstage, was Isbell’s first. Later, Isbell joined Drive-By Truckers as that indie band ascended, eventually finding greater acclaim and fame as a solo artist .
On Monday night, Howard and Isbell told these stories and others in-person. The event, at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, saw them receiving Alabama Humanities Fellows , the highest humanities honor bestowed in the state.
Previous recipients include the likes of “To Kill a Mockingbird” novelist Harper Lee and civil rights activist and congressman John Lewis . Howard and Isbell are the first two musicians to receive the honor. It was also the first time AHA’s event was held in Huntsville, a city whose musical profile has risen in recent years, detonated by Orion Amphitheater , where Howard and Isbell have performed at.
Howard and Isbell were given their trophies, made by glass artist and Florence native Cal Breed, by Drive-By Truckers cofounder Patterson Hood . A songwriter known for his raw honest depictions of The South, Hood, in a rascally voice, told first-hand accounts of experiencing Howard and Isbell’s talents in utero.
Hood recalled jamming with a then-unknown Isbell at the lake house of Muscle Shoals music insider Dick Cooper , a year before Isbell joined DBT. He also recalled being wowed by an early Alabama Shakes live performance at now defunct Florence retailer Pegasus Records .
The “in conversation” segment was moderated by NPR’s Ann Powers. A renowned music critic and writer, Powers, like Howard and Isbell currently a Nashville resident, previously resided in Tuscaloosa. She guided the night’s conversation deftly and warmly.
While touching on well-told beats – Howard’s decision to go solo, Isbell’s getting sober before breaking through – Powers got them to dig into their north Alabama roots.
Of her Athens childhood, Howard recalled the “different kinds of folks there,” something she said she didn’t fully appreciate until later. “People who have everything, people have nothing,” Howard said.” I got to experience all kinds of people and have a lot of friends from different backgrounds.”
Howard recalled a youth filled with “rolling hills, the cows, the chickens, the trucks and dirt bikes, creeks, and going fishing at night.” She added, “But one thing I love the most is the people in Athens. I miss it. Every time I come back here, I really feel like I’m home.”
Howard touched on Afro-futurist influences like Alabama born jazzer Sun Ra . Of her own music, she said, “The South is always in it. It’s in the molecules.”
Isbell talked about growing up in a family filled with musicians, even if they weren’t professionals. Isbell said, “There was just music everywhere. I remember the first time I spent the night with somebody at their house when I was like 9 or 10 years old, I remember saying, ‘Where’s your guitar?’ And he said, ‘We don’t have a guitar.’”
For Isbell back then, “Not having a guitar was like not having a refrigerator. And I started realizing I was really fortunate, because [music] that’s how we shared time with each other, the thing we talked about, and the things we enjoyed. There was an inordinate number of people from Green Hill, Alabama, who wound up being professional musicians.” Remember Tompkins, who got Isbell into his first band as a teenager? He went on to write country hits for the likes of Carrie Underwood and Kenny Chesney. “And you know,” Isbell said, “part of that, I think, was that we didn’t have a whole awful lot else to do.”
As a teenager, Howard recalled being drawn to friends “who had good CDs,” including a female classmate who liked Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. That led her to the music of prog-rock bands like Yes and King Crimson. Prince and David Bowie also became touchstones. All this can be heard on now-classic Alabama Shakes cuts like “Hold On,” “Always Alright” and “Sound & Color.”
Back further, growing up with mixed parents, Howard’s mom is white and her dad’s Black, Howard’s was exposed to gospel to country. Those sounds continue to echo in her forward-thinking work, as heard on latest album “What Now.”
For a while just a guitar player, Isbell started making up lyrics to other artists songs. Isbell noted since his mom had him “reading a lot and early,” he, “felt like I could express myself verbally and musically, but to get a vocal melody going was a difficult thing for me. Took me a long time.” He got there by improvising guitar lines and then transposing those to vocal melodies he’d sing.
Onstage Monday and seated in posh chairs next to Powers, Howard and Isbell looked like the stars they are now. Howard wore a bold black and white polka-dotted outfit fitting her larger-than-life musicality. Isbell sported a dark suit and slicked back hair. His studded earring periodically caught light.
During their conversation, Howard spoke of meeting her erstwhile Shakes bandmates in Athens. Guitarist Heath Fogg was scooped up from a band she and Cockrell opened for at an early gig. Drummer Steve Johnson was a cashier at a local music retailer. Of finding her bandmates, Howard said, “It’s like [the videogame] ‘Pokémon,’ you’ve got to catch ‘em all.”
After playing their first show together as the Shakes, they later changed the name name to Alabama Shakes, “that’s when we knew it.” Howard added, “What’s full circle is I remember Drive-By Truckers from north Alabama, and I remember seeing them touring around the world, and I was saying ‘If they can do it, we can do it.’”
Isbell recalled pestering legendary Muscle Shoals musicians like Swampers bassist David Hood for advice on how to break into studio work. Hood patiently answered with down-to-earth basics like, “Show up on time. Make sure your gear works. Be nice.”
Isbell also detailed what it was like being a house songwriter at storied FAME Studios in his early 20s. FAME impresario Rick Hall treated him with the same critical ear and harsh evaluations, he’d give a seasoned pro.
“I got experience in studios,” Isbell said, “before I got much live experience on tour. And, you know, if you can sit still and you can play guitar, keep it in tune, and get all the way through a song with Rick Hall looking over your shoulder, you can play live on stage at [now closed venue] T.T. Bears in [Cambridge] Massachusetts after 26 beers.”
Isbell’s signature dark lyrics didn’t result in songwriting hits for others during his FAME stint. “And I used to think,” Isbell said, “if I’d come along in the ‘70s or something, I would have had much more success. Then I realized, no, I would have been very dead.”
Asked by Powers about small Alabama music venues they enjoyed playing coming up, Howard noted Mobile spot Callaghan’s and bygone Tuscaloosa dive Egan’s . Isbell fondly recalled Birmingham rock bar The Nick and Tuscaloosa alt-rock hub The Chukker .
Monday’s colloquium is Alabama Humanities Alliances’ biggest yearly fundraiser. Their next event will feature comedian Roy Wood Jr. and author Rick Bragg at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Center on Dec. 2. Early in the evening in Huntsville, AHA executive director Charles M. Holmes said the organization’s “work is not political, it is human.” The organization’s website states, “As a statewide nonprofit, we’re passionate about using the humanities to make Alabama better.”
That said, Powers did ask Isbell to reflect on his recent performance at the Democrat National Convention. He admitted, “Before, I went on the stage, I was a little bit rattled, because I somebody texted me said, ‘What channel is this on? What network it’s on?’ And I said, ‘It’s on all of them.’”
After their conversation drew to a close, Isbell then Howard each performed one song solo acoustic. Isbell, joking he didn’t want to follow Howard,” went first, playing “Cast Iron Skillet,” a rose off his latest album “Weathervanes,” showcasing his incisive words, sharp guitaring and ripe vocals. Howard followed with a stunning version of “Short and Sweet” off her 2019 solo debut album. Eloquently playing a nylon string guitar, her vocals exploring deep soul expressionism anyone with a heartbeat could feel. Wow. Just wow.
In three minutes or so each, Howard and Isbell articulated in song everything the previous 45-minute conversation dug into and beyond. Then, as she, Isbell, Powers and Hood gathered to bid the audience goodnight, Howard mouthed a certain Alabama endearment: “Roll Tide.”

Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka Announce Joint Tour
Alabama Shakes ’ Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka will embark on a joint tour of North America this autumn. The American and British singer-songwriters will bring Yasmin Williams along for the trek, which kicks off in Philadelphia in late September. Check out the dates below. Coincidentally, on Friday, April 19, Howard also released her song “ Fire Inside ” from the animated Netflix film Thelma the Unicorn . Scroll down to check that out, too.
In a press release, Howard said, “I am so excited to be touring again with my dear friend Michael Kiwanuka and hitting so many amazing venues across the country in the fall. We started this journey at almost the same time in 2011 and it has been so amazing to follow his growth as an artist. I can’t wait to watch his set and also see Yasmin Williams as she is such a unique artist. This tour is a dream come true.”
Kiwanuka, who reworked Howard’s song “ 13th Century Metal ” back in 2020, added, “So excited to join Brittany on this run. I’ve been such a fan of her music since I first saw a video of her singing ‘Hold On’ in a record store somewhere. So authentically true in her voice and songs. Since then I’ve been hooked. Seeing her shine as a solo artist is a delight so it’s a real honour for me to be able to share the stage with her. I can’t wait to see you America. It’s been so long and I’ve missed playing for you. I’m counting down the days.”

I’m not given to hyperbole often, but I’m getting reflective at the end of a decade, and Brittany Howard is one of the best performers of the 2010s.
I have seen her slay in Alabama Shakes, but the joy and freedom she exuded at The Moore Theatre last night was another level of artistic expression for her. It was so infectious that she had every person from the front row to the third balcony on their feet creating a moment, and encouraging us to spread that message outside of the night.
She played almost all of Jaime, and owned covers of Prince and Jackie Wilson, and in the encore played two new songs that made me even more curious for what’s to come in her artistic growth in the 2020s.
I miss Alabama Shakes, but I am so happy she is having so much fun with her solo venture.

Brittany Howard Announces Tour Dates, Signs with Island Records
The post Brittany Howard Announces Tour Dates, Signs with Island Records appeared first on Consequence .
Brittany Howard has announced a handful of tour dates in North America for Fall 2023. The announcement coincides with her signing to Island Records.
After hitting Bourbon & Beyond Festival in Louisville, Kentucky this weekend, Howard’s live shows will resume in November, where she’ll kick things off in Birmingham, Alabama on the 6th. From there, she’ll make stops in Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas throughout the month, before wrapping things up at Corona Capitol Festival in Mexico City on November 17th. L’Rain will be supporting Howard on a few of the dates.
The Alabama Shakes member hasn’t put out a solo album since her 2019 LP Jaime — released via ATO — but the news of her joining Island means we can likely expect some new music imminently. Howard said in a press release: “I couldn’t be happier to announce my new partnership with Island Records, a label with such an incredible legacy and team. I cannot wait for the world to hear my new music and to start touring again.”
Pre-sale for Howard’s headlining shows begins tomorrow, September 13th at 10:00 a.m. ET, with general sale following Friday the 15th at 10:00 a.m. ET via Ticketmaster . Once tickets are on sale, they’ll also be available at StubHub , where your order is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

Brittany Howard Announces New Album WHAT NOW, Extends Tour Into 2024
Listen to the title track below
Brittany Howard has readied her second solo album, WHAT NOW. Along with the news, she’s shared the record’s title track, and announced a new run of tour dates for 2024.
WHAT NOW marks Howard’s first release on Island Records, which she signed to back in September. There’s no release date for the project as of yet, but based on its title track’s lyrics (“I’ve been making plans that don’t include you anymore/ My heart wants to stay but I don’t know what for”), the record signifies a time of transition.
“‘What Now’ is maybe the truest and bluest of all the songs,” Howard said of the single. “It’s never my design to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I needed to say what was on my mind without editing myself. I like how it’s a song that makes you want to dance, but at the same time the lyrics are brutal.” Alongside co-producer Shawn Everett (Kacey Musgraves, SZA), the artist recorded the song at the Sound Emporium in her hometown of Nashville. Pre-orders for a 7-inch vinyl of the single, with B-side “Meditation,” are ongoing.
Howard already announced a brief fall tour of North America with guest L’Rain, but those 2023 dates will now be joined by a February 2024 run with Becca Mancari (who recently dropped a track featuring the singer). Beginning February 6th in Chicago, the 2024 tour includes stops in Toronto, Boston, New York, and DC before wrapping up in Asheville, North Carolina on February 23rd. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster , after which additional deals can be found via StubHub .

Listen: LP Giobbi Delivers Latest ‘Dotr’ Preview, “Until There’s Nothing Left” Featuring Brittany Howard
LP Giobbi has created a wave in an otherwise steady trickle of previews for her impending sophomore album, Dotr , due Oct. 18 via Ninja Tune/ Counter Records. The fourth single from the imminent set, “Until There’s Nothing Left,” incorporates vocals from Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes’ recording of “Don’t Wanna Fight,” ushering an amalgamation of female force from the track’s guest vocalist and Gobbi’s inevitable dance lean. In addition to the audio, Giobbi also dropped a visual equalizer alongside today’s single.
Coalescing their pasts, childhood photos of Giobbi and Howard populate across the screen via the official “Until There’s Nothing Left” video, interspersed with modern captures of the leading ladies: stills, live performance moments (both old and new), and more, which percolate a sense of musical autonomy and control over one’s sonic semblance. The latter lends to overarching themes across the album, particularly the potent celebration of women and their varying roles.
“This album is a lot about what it is to be a daughter, have a daughter and love a daughter, as well as a way of honoring some of the most important women in my life. There are also a lot of themes tied to home (the ones we create or the ones we were born into) which, for me, are reflected through my identity as a daughter,” Giobbi explained.
Touching on the roots of her history with Howard, Giobbi said, “I first saw Brittany Howard when Alabama Shakes performed more than a decade ago at Oakland’s Fox Theater where I was working. Partnering on the Shakes’ ‘Don’t Wanna Fight’ was a dream for me; the result feels like an epiphany, Brittany’s voice rising above spirals of synth like a prayer delivered onto the dancefloor.”

“I ain’t sorry,” she repeatedly declared near the close of the spirited 75-minute show. Witnessing Howard arrive at the defiant conclusion after probing a thicket of personal matters related to love, loss, failure and success stamped the performance with a satisfying sense of accomplishment and liberation.
Targeting the hips, head and heart, Howard also used the occasion to play every full track from her forthcoming “What Now” album to a crowd acquainted with only a few numbers. The lack of familiarity didn’t stunt momentum or prompt anyone to run for drink refills.
If anything, the newness of the material had the audience concentrating in a way often absent at shows in the smartphone era. Then again, Howard’s stage presence and powerhouse voice demanded undivided attention. Surrounded by an agile eight-piece ensemble, she gave herself the freedom to put her six-string instrument to the side, disappear into a moment or ride a feeling wherever it led.
Fully in control, Howard demonstrated why she remains a musician who fares even better onstage than on record. Her imposing physique suited her still-bigger voice, which went from whisper soft to megawatt loud as quickly and smoothly as a hypercar accelerating from 0 to 60. Dressed in a shimmering dress with her curly hair falling to her shoulders, the bespectacled Howard sounded like she looked — commanding, confident, cool, smart, stylish — and vice versa. Her expressiveness extended to extroverted body language and deliberate dance steps that underlined the songs’ animated potency, as well as Howard’s vibrant disposition.
Though her restless fare gazes ahead, Howard exists as a throwback to an era of popular music that placed a higher premium on creativity. Her non-conformity involves a combination of surprise, challenge and risk that doesn’t fit into the tidy boxes valued by the modern mainstream music industry. How many artists would turn their back on probable arena-headlining status or put on hiatus a group that racked up nine Grammy nominations within a six-year span? Howard did both.
In 2018, the 35-year-old broke from the Alabama Shakes, the acclaimed band she helped bring to the edge of household-name recognition after just two albums. The decision disappointed some fans and caused others to wonder about her health. Howard tossed another curve ball in the form of an eclectic 2019 solo debut (“Jaime”) that strayed from her prior rock-based approaches. It garnered additional accolades and five more Grammy nominations. Then the pandemic hit.
Howard made the most of the situation by focusing on her well-being. Fresh from a divorce, and fighting burnout, she relocated to Nashville and explored the outdoors. The Alabama native built a small home studio and recorded a batch of tunes she never expected to release. They form the backbone of “What Now,” which arrives Friday.
Supported by an octet that included two backing vocalists, Howard leaned into songs steeped in liquid funk, combustible R&B, neo soul, harmonic pop and melodic jazz. In conveying struggles, admitting trepidation and striving for resolution, Howard turned to the shape-shifting color spectrums provided by psychedelic accents and rippling organ passages. Keyboards reproduced the sound of bells, bowls and xylophones — singular touches that worked in tandem with an overall focus on texture, atmosphere and vibe.
Occupying her own private universe, Howard anchored an emotional outpouring that stretched sonic borders and asked as many questions as it answered. Songs avoided direct routes. Frustration, hesitancy and cautious hopefulness manifested in the forms of syncopated beats and off-kilter rhythms. Tempos halted and fluctuated. Vintage fusion, hip-hop, disco and club elements cross-pollinated with contemporary soul and dance grooves in ways that encouraged both introspection and movement.
Extending her arms, snapping her fingers, squaring her shoulders, leaning back and staring up at the ceiling, swaying side to side, twirling her hands like a young girl preoccupied with a strand of hair — Howard telescoped the anxiety, fear and anticipation in the narratives. Vocally, she brought the equivalent of sun, clouds and thunder. Whether wailing, crying, sighing, preaching or cooing, the singer seldom failed to rise above the clamor of her band.
Tapping into the energy of serrated riffs and rumbling percussion, Howard transformed the righteous positivity of “13th Century Metal” into a call to action before ceding to a drum solo that emphasized the enthusiastic resolve of the messages. The equally impressive “Power to Undo” ignited with funky and distorted signatures as it begged to continue as an extended jam. Pulsing with four-on-the-floor inertia, “Prove It to You” functioned as a dancefloor confession.
Howard also understood how to deliver the knotty intricacies of a ballad. She tapped her inner chanteuse on the delicate “To Be Still,” crafted a lullaby by way of a solo acoustic reading of “Short and Sweet” and channeled the depths of romantic despair on the arresting “Samson.” During the plush “I Don’t,” the singer’s phrasing doubled as sheets of velvet.
Hiccups that traditionally accompany the beginning of a tour were primarily limited to a handful of lighting miscues. Well-rehearsed and cognizant of pacing, Howard and company operated as if they’d been on the road a month. Yes, the vocalist could afford to engage the crowd with more banter. Another oversight: The decision to rely on synthesizers to conjure trumpets rather than hiring a horn player — particularly given the octet configuration — seemed bizarre. Several new songs should benefit from tighter arrangements as the collective furthers its chemistry.
Be aware that the promising venture might already be living on borrowed time. The 16-time Grammy-nominated singer recently disclosed ideas of retreating to a farm and entertaining retirement — or, at the least, performing according to her whims. Given Howard’s independent streak and admirable unpredictability, such talk might be fantasy. Or not.
Catch her when you can.

Brittany Howard is leaving the door open for a potential Alabama Shakes reunion
You've got to hold on... to the hope.
Jessica is a staff writer at Entertainment Weekly, where she covers TV, movies, and pop culture. Her work has appeared in Bustle, NYLON, Cosmopolitan, InStyle, and more. She lives in California with her dog.
Hold on: Brittany Howard says the door is not closed for a potential Alabama Shakes reunion.
The Grammy-winning rock band has been on hiatus since 2018, and frontwoman and guitarist Howard has since released two celebrated solo albums: 2019's Jaime and 2024's What Now . What does the future hold for the group? And is Howard tired of being asked about it?
"I'm not tired of being asked about it," Howard tells Entertainment Weekly while promoting her Netflix animated film Thelma the Unicorn , out now. "It is a beautiful part of my history as a musician [and] changed my life. I love the music we made together. I was just listening to 'Always Alright'; I haven't heard it in 10 years."

"As far as what happens in the future," she adds, "I just follow the curiosity. I feel like if there's a beat there and the creativity's calling me there, then that's something that we'll have a conversation about, me and the guys. I wouldn't say the door's completely closed."

Formed in 2009 in Athens, Ala., the band — also comprised of guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, and drummer Steve Johnson — released their debut album Boys & Girls in 2012, an instant sensation that garnered the group their first Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. It was followed by the acclaimed Sound & Color in 2015, their last album together.

"It's important to go where your heart tells you," Howard previously told podcast host Tom Power of stepping away from the band earlier this year. "And never feel like you're trapped into something, especially as a creative person... I had to follow, I guess you would call it, the muse. I had to follow where it was coming from, and it was just away from that. I had to do it."
For now, Howard, whose music has soundtracked many films and shows, makes her acting debut in Jared and Jerusha Hess ' Thelma the Unicorn , adapted from Aaron Blabey’s children’s books of the same name. The positive experience has since piqued her interest in pursuing more acting roles. "I always follow my curiosity,” she tells EW.

BRANDON LAKE AND PHIL WICKHAM PRESENT ‘FOR THE ONE’ TOUR DOCUMENTARY
WITH FATHOM
In Theaters October 27-29
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (August 27, 2024) — Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham present FOR THE ONE tour documentary coming to theaters nationwide this fall via Fathom. Wickham and Lake, both celebrated for their inspiring music and powerful performances, bring their songs to life in a new and profound way. FOR THE ONE not only highlights their dynamic live performances from the Summer Worship Nights Tour but also explores the deeper stories behind their music, revealing the personal and collective experiences that have shaped their artistic journeys.
“Never in my life did I think I would be a part of telling a piece of my story in theaters. I hope the stories encountered through this movie show everyone watching how much they are loved by the ONE. I can’t wait to share this with the world and I hope people are encouraged by it,” said Phil Wickham.
Watch the teaser trailer HERE .
“My hope for this project is that it would not only show what it takes to go on tour, but why the music and touring mean so much to us. Countless lives have been changed, especially ours. Though we’ve had the opportunity to influence many, our focus remains FOR THE ONE,” said Brandon Lake.
FOR THE ONE is directed by Noah Taher, produced by Dove Award and Billboard Music Video Award-winning Ken Carpenter (Angel Studios’ THE SHIFT), and executive produced by Ben Howard (BLUE MIRACLE, THE LONG GAME). Lake and Wickham are repped by UTA, who packaged the film.
SYNOPSIS: FOR THE ONE is a groundbreaking film that journeys through the stories that gave flight to the Summer Worship Nights tour. A triumph of music, vision, worship, and community, FOR THE ONE weaves the songs and the passion of Brandon Lake and Phil Wickham into an unforgettable tour documentary.
