Toronto's GO Transit Tickets, Passes, and Fares

go bus trip planner toronto

GO Transit is a regional transportation system consisting of buses and trains, with multiple stations in Toronto . A GO Transit GO Transit ticket can get you on one of the GO Trains or buses that connect Toronto with the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton. GO makes for a convenient way to get around the GTA for both commuters and leisure travelers.

GO Transit Fares

Unlike the TTC and most of the other public transit systems in the GTA, there's no one price for a GO Transit ticket. Instead, the price of your ticket is determined using a "fare zone" system, meaning how much you pay is based on where you'll be traveling. There are also different rates for adults, seniors, children, and students.

If you use a PRESTO Card, you'll automatically receive an incrementally-increasing discount based on how many trips you take in a month. This is a great option for commuters who make the same trip every weekday.

Even if you won't be traveling as frequently as daily commuters, using PRESTO can still result in a discount and can be easier for some people than dealing with paper tickets and passes. Group passes are also available. Visit the GO Transit website and use the  fare calculator to get an estimated cost for your particular trip.

Buying GO Transit Tickets

GO Transit tickets can be purchased from attendants at all GO Train Stations and GO Bus Terminals during ticket booth hours (which vary by station). Many stations also offer automated ticket sale kiosks. If you'll be riding a GO bus rather than a train, you can choose to buy single-ride tickets, day passes or group passes from the driver.

The PRESTO Card is an electronic card that you load with funds. You can purchase a PRESTO Card from Union Station, GO Train stations and some other GO agencies. You can also purchase a PRESTO Card online, and set it up so it automatically reads reloads. There is a $6 issuance fee and you'll need to load the card with a minimum of $10.

Using GO Transit Tickets

If you're riding on a GO Bus and have bought a ticket in advance (from a booth attendant or machine), you'll need to show it to the driver as you board the bus. If you're using the PRESTO Card, you'll need to tap on at the reader located beside the driver AND tap off as you exit at your stop.

If you're riding on a GO Train, you won't show your ticket to anyone as you board. However, if you're using a PRESTO Card, you do need to "tap on" at a reader at the station before you enter the fare paid zone (and "tap off" at the station where you exit).

GO Trains run on a proof-of-payment system, where you board at any door and keep your ticket or PRESTO Card handy, as a GO Transit enforcement officer, customer attendant or other GO Transit employee could ask to see it at any point.

If you have a ticket or group pass, they'll check that you're somewhere between the fare paid zones listed on it, and if you're using a PRESTO Card the enforcement officer will use a scanner to make sure you tapped on before boarding. Visit the GO Transit website for the fare calculator, to check the booth hours of the GO Transit ticket agency nearest you, check for service updates, or plan your route.

Excellent for Go Transit

Very accurate and helpful. Let’s me know in advance if the train is running behind schedule opposed to finding out after getting to the station.

Huge part of my everyday commute!

This app has been a huge part of my everyday commute. I love that I can set “favourite” trips and get notified whenever there’s a delay for my trip. It also notifies me whenever my delayed trip is eligible for GO service guarantee! Amazing!

Easy to use

Never used transit before I got this app, this app keeps it simple and I’m yet to get lost 👍🏻

Welcome to MyTTC .ca

MyTTC was born out of a desire for free, open access to transit data. When we started, the amount and quality of the data available from the TTC was somewhat lacking. However, The TTC has since released schedules and real time data which make other applications like MyTTC easier to build.

We are not the TTC, nor are we affiliated with them. This is an independent effort because we love the TTC and just want to create a better experience for everyone. From counting every stair at every subway station, to placing ten thousand bus stops and over three million stop times, MyTTC is a product of passion by a small, dedicated and potentially obsessed team.

Google Trip Planner

Google trip planner quick tips.

  • Enter your origin and destination, date and time of travel, plan by departure or arrival time, then hit "Get Directions". You'll be redirected to the Google Maps page with the result. By default, Google provides an option with the least walking based on your departure or arrival time, but the option may not be the quickest route.
  • If you would like to see more options, click on the "Back" arrow on the left side of the screen within the Google Maps page. Click on "Options" adjacent to the date and time of travel. Select best route or fewer transfers option, and then scroll down for more alternatives.
  • Select and click on the preferred trip plan for additional details about that trip.

Helpful reminders

Oakville Transit Trip Planner uses the power of Google to make your next bus trip planning quick and easy.

Simply enter where you are, where you want to go, and when you want to be there; Google will do the planning for you!

If you don't know the destination address

If you don't know the exact address you can search for points of interest in Oakville. You can also search for an intersection (e.g., Trafalgar Road and Upper Middle Road), or you can drag the Start Point and/or End Point (with the pin) around on the map.

Change your route planning option

You can change your planning preferences and plan your route by best route, fewer transfers and less walking. Click the "Back" arrow in the top left corner of Google Maps and click on "Options" in the search fields box to change your planning option.

Choosing your route

You will often receive more than one suggested route as this is the way Google works. Because GO Transit also operate through Oakville, GO Transit options may come up as one of the first choices. Routes may vary in trip length, departure and arrival times, cost or the amount of walking involved.

The first suggestion may not be the most suitable, so see what else it suggests by clicking on each. Icons appear to the left of each description showing what modes of transportation are involved. Clicking on each item will show detailed information about the suggested route, including the amount of walking, and the time required for transfers.

Accuracy of scheduled time

Real time information is not yet available on the trip planner. The times provided are the scheduled times found on the schedules and maps page.

This also means that temporary detours and service disruptions are not reflected in the trip results. Arrive early to ensure that you do not miss your bus.

Crossing into neighbouring cities

If the neighbouring city is also using Transit Trip Planer by Google, then yes, you can plan your trip from one city to another. Both of Oakville's neighbouring cities — Mississauga and Burlington — are using Transit Trip Planner by Google.

Google Trip Planner accessibility

Google Transit, which powers this trip planner, has accessibility features for persons who use screen readers or Braille displays. Google Maps provides an easy-to-use interface that gives trip information on these devices.

Suggested backtracking

Backtracking refers to suggestions that you travel away from your destination only to have you travel back again (towards your destination). While it may seem odd for the trip planner to provide a backtracking option, it may be logical from a travel time perspective at certain times during the day.

In some cases, when you plan a trip using the Oakville Transit Trip Planner, you may be provided with a planned trip that involves backtracking, transfers, or extended wait times. In the event this occurs, please contact Oakville Transit or the local transit provider to confirm the connections and determine the fare.

Other available trip planners

Customers can also use the Triplinx trip planner which is designed for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). You can find schedule, fare and other information from 11 GTHA transit providers in Triplinx. Customize your trip by using the options such as maximum walking distance, cycle distance, transit mode and transit service providers you would like to use.

Is the Oakville Transit GTFS dataset available?

Oakville Transit scheduled service data is available in Google Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) format. Visit the Open Data website for more information.

Oakville Transit is not responsible or liable for the accuracy of any information provided by Google Maps and does not validate any trip planning information provided.
