As part of Justin Bieber’s 2012 “Believe” World Tour, the faux Steamboat structure that acts as the centerpiece of his triple-layered stage deck is the absolute highlight of the show. The Steampunk-style Boat piece is made from aluminum, steel pencil rod, foam, and wood and pulls apart in sections for quick and simple travel. Paired with two silver Propeller fixtures to tie its scenic theming together, the Steamboat gets to astound audiences as part of the choreography team and is a character all on its own.

Justin Bieber’s “Believe” World Tour

Justin Bieber’s Believe Tour, which began a year ago and runs through December, has the 19-year-old Canadian and his vast entourage flying around the world with more than 150 shows in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Asia, the Middle East, South Africa and Australia.

Apart from the look of the show’s opening, where Justin Bieber makes a winged entrance, tour director/production designer Tom Marzullo created the show visuals with little more than a one-word directive from Bieber and manager Scooter Braun — to make it “epic.”

Even so, Marzullo strived to adhere to the design principles he learned from Shep Gordon, manager for Alice Cooper and Luther Vandross, years ago — to “make anything that you do appear three times larger than it actually is.”

Tour Director/Production Designer

“Having been there from the beginning, I took my understanding of what they were looking for and set about framing a concept in.  I am incredibly proud of the design and production group for the Believe Tour. Justin’s original idea for the opening of the show was close to where we ended up. He was very involved with the music and the choreography, but aside from the opening, he pretty much left the production design to our team.

“I am a 100 percent believer in the team design approach. In my mind all of the ideas are evolutionary, and they grow exponentially by adding more expertise.

“One of my favorite things to do is to repurpose existing machinery and customize anew. It saves the artist money as well as helps the vendors.

“One of the innovations on this tour that I am most proud of is the tracking lighting pods that travel along the dasher line. I wanted to involve the audience into an immersive experience as well as get great light at the end of the 40-foot thrust. The tracking pods (my guys call them the ‘sleds’) constantly change positions throughout the show and place 7K Syncrolites, Sharpys and MAC 3K’s anywhere we want along the path. The support trusses that extend into the audience also provided excellent special FX positions.”

“We have all of the same vendors returning from the first tour. From Nick (Jackson) of Chaos Visual Productions, Brian (White) on the automation and rigging side from SGPS, All Access’s account executive Robert Achlimbari. My longtime friend and working associate Robert Roth represents Christie Lites. Ted Maccabee represents Strictly FX. Back line comes from Crossover Entertainment — Billy Johnson is the account executive, and Danny Akin is my lead back line tech.”

“ Chris Kuroda came to us midway through the process via a suggestion by Dan Kanter, Justin’s musical director and dyed-in-the-wool Phish fan. Because the automation took up a large part of the overhead real estate, I already had the truss configuration completed when Chris arrived. He and Andrew ‘Gif’ Giffin took the plot and programmed a masterful light show. I wanted a more sophisticated spotlight design that is usually only seen on Broadway and the West End. Nick Van Nostrand accepted and rose to that challenge. Nick’s efforts allowed Chris and Gif to focus on the rig. And Reid Nofsinger, Doug Cenko and Mark Grega created some truly spectacular pyro and laser FX. Now, 100-plus shows later, we are still making improvements. With 10 shows to go on the final North American leg, I think we have a good chance of finishing the design.

Justin Bieber tour photo by Steve Jennings

“I am truly proud of this crew and this show, I am grateful to Justin Bieber, Scooter Braun, Allison Kaye, Solomon Smallwood, Jon Baden, Bill Thompson, Kim Marion and Vicki Huxel for supporting the creative vision and providing a truly great opportunity to give all who attend another reason to ‘Believe.’ Years ago, Shep Gordon (manager for Alice Cooper and Luther Vandross) taught me that the key to creating a memorable show that is equally as successful on the financial statements as it is to the public is to make anything that you do appear three times larger than it actually is… If it is a five-truck show, make it look like 15. In our case, we took 18 trucks and filled the arena. I want Shep to know that the formula still works!”

Lighting Director

“The design team of Tom Marzullo and Chris Kuroda have created a terrific show, which is definitely the most intricately cued and programmed show I’ve had the pleasure of running.   All songs were complete when I took over as lighting director — when Chris left to go back out with his longtime client Phish. For the odd occasion where things get changed up or there is a special guest, Chris also created a fairly elaborate busking page that I can turn to. The show’s overall attention to detail is really amazing. With well over 1,000 cues, it really keeps things interesting and keeps me on my toes every night.  With all the lighting being driven manually, we have a lot of fun with it every night.”

Justin Bieber Headlining Believe Tour Kicks Off In September

justin bieber believe tour choreography

While Justin Bieber fans are awaiting the June 19 release of Believe , perhaps they can slake their fever by snatching up some tickets to the singer's upcoming North American tour.

Bieber will hit the road for a headlining tour in support of his fourth album on September 29 with a show in Glendale, Arizona, with fans who purchase tickets to the shows getting a chance to pre-order the disc. The "Believe" outing will hit 45 cities before wrapping up in Miami on January 26, 2013, with protégé Carly Rae Jepsen on board as the opening act for the entire run.

"There's a lot of fun stuff," Bieber [article id="1685500"]promised earlier this week[/article]
about what fans can expect to see on the tour. "I've been really hard at work in the studio, in the dance studio, just kind of figuring out what I want to do as far as choreography and whatnot. I think the tour's going to be really special. We got a lot of surprises."

The presale for the Fan Club will kick off on May 23, which gives diehards first crack at tickets and some exclusive merchandise. General public tickets will go on sale on June 2 in the U.S. (a day earlier for Canada). VIP packages will also be available, including premium seats, as well as potential meet-and-greet and photo opportunities with Bieber, autographed memorabilia, exclusive VIP merchandise and other perks. Also, $1 from each ticket will be donated to Pencils of Promise , a charity that works to build schools and increase educational opportunities in the developing world, with a goal of building 15 schools around the world for needy children.

While he may be cooking up ways to surprise his fans on the road, Bieber was recently surprised when his video for [article id="1684454"]"Boyfriend"[/article]
broke a record for the [article id="1684600"]most views in one day[/article]
on YouTube. "It's crazy," he said. "Hopefully it just keeps getting more views and more views. My fans are amazing. I'm very blessed."

Bieber just released the [article id="1685471"]track list[/article]
for Believe , confirming that duets with Drake, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean and Ludacris all made the album's final cut. His mentor, Usher, serves as the executive producer for the album.

Justin Bieber on Believe Tour: ‘We Got a Lot of Surprises’

"In like a week or so" is when we can expect Justin Bieber tour dates to be announced.

At least that's what The Biebs told MTV on the red carpet of the 2012 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 20. In case you missed it, the 'Boyfriend' singer delivered the best performance of the evening with his Michael Jackson -inspired dance-a-thon.

Will he offer more of that on the tour for 'Believe?' One can only hope.

"There's a lot of fun stuff. I've been really hard at work in the studio, in the dance studio, just kind of figuring out what I want to do as far as choreography and whatnot," the singer said. "I think the tour's going to be really special. We got a lot of surprises."

Surprises? We like those, especially when they involve The Biebs and performances.

Oh, and in case you snoozed on it, he shared the deluxe edition track listing of 'Believe' yesterday, too.

So generous, that Biebs. Overload us with information. We want it. We need it. Beliebers never want an info drought.

Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ video? JLo? Janet? Meet the choreographer behind the moves, Parris Goebel

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

If you were one of more than 500 million recent YouTube views for Justin Bieber’s song “Sorry” and were dazzled by the dancing, know that the moves originated from the mind of choreographer Parris Goebel.

The dancing for Janet Jackson’s latest tour? That’s was Goebel’s work too.

Choreography for Nicki Minaj? Missy Elliott? Jennifer Lopez? Cirque Du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson ONE”? Goebel has done those as well.

But for one of the world’s leaders in pop choreography, the phenomenon of the Bieber video may be the biggest. Goebel’s dance crew, ReQuest, first introduced to many through MTV’s “Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew,” was enlisted to perform for Bieber’s “Purpose Movement” videos. The piece for the song “Sorry” features the dance crew -- no Beebs -- and is nearing 510 million views on YouTube in 2 1/2 months.

Forgive the math, but that’s almost 7 million views a day. Again, there’s no Bieber in the video.

justin bieber believe tour choreography

Goebel also choreographed the film “Born to Dance,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. The movie, directed by Tammy Davis and starring Tia-Taharoa Maipi, “Australian Idol” winner Stan Walker and “Fame” star Kherington Payne, is about a Maori teen discovered by a more famous dance crew through YouTube. The plot is reminiscent of how Goebel learned to dance, how she was discovered and how her fame has grown.

The New Zealand native paused from teaching classes at Hip Hop International’s Urban Moves Dance Workshops for this edited conversation about her rise, her preparations for Janet Jackson’s tour and how YouTube has expanded the audience for contemporary dance.

Has YouTube grown as a unifier for dance in the world?

I would say yeah, for sure, 100%. Without that, people don’t have the chance to be viewed. Without YouTube, how could anyone see my work? People would have to have a lot of money to fly to the states all the time to show their work. It’s so much easier now with the click of a button. It’s so convenient. You film something, upload it, and people all over the world can see it. It’s magic.

How did you first learn to dance yourself?

YouTube wasn’t really a big thing for me until I was 16. I got into it going off video clips on MTV. I just tried to copy it, but a lot of it was within me.

“Born to Dance” was the first film that you choreographed. How was that process?

It was definitely a challenge because the time period was so short. But I do a lot for my YouTube clips. I do a lot of choreography, and everything I do, I imagine it through the lens. It’s something that I enjoy.

The film is very raw. The storyline is very cool and it’s very cultural. I think people will be able to see what’s so special about New Zealand hip-hop dancing, which people ask me all the time. When they see this film, they will get a glimpse of our country. They’ll see where we’re from and our culture and our roots. On top of that, the whole film is filled with New Zealand talent, so you get an idea of what we’re about and why we’re strong.

How did you decide that this is how you wanted to make your living? A lot of people love to dance, but ...

There was no doubt in my mind that this is what I wanted to do. It was the thing that I was most naturally gifted at. It was a no-brainer. Why would I do anything else? I was so bad -- I failed at everything. Dance was easy for me -- not easy -- but it was within me. Once I started growing up, I realized it was my purpose. I was brought to Earth to do this.

When did you develop your polyswag style?

We just named our style, but it wasn’t anything that was too deep or serious. People took it to the extreme. On “ABDC,” they were like -- you need a name for that -- so we kind of got forced to name it. Then people just took it and stuck with it.

When Lopez and Jackson contact you, and you get these calls ...

And Nicki Minaj!

So you get these calls from established stars asking for help on their tours or videos.

JLo was my first big artist that I worked for. I definitely cried for that one. That was my first glimpse that I could work with big artist. To be honest, I was a bit discouraged because I’m young, and in this industry I’m very young [23], and felt like it’d be a long time before I would be working for some of these artists. Once I got JLo, I had to tell myself that anything is possible. It doesn’t matter how old you are or where you’re from, you need to use this and show people what you can do. Once I got on that job, doors just opened.

To be honest, I didn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke. Obviously it was very confidential for a long time until she even announced that she was coming back, so I had to keep it to myself. I was getting anxious.

As a New Zealand girl, how did you and your friends get on “America’s Best Dance Crew?” You were the first non-North American crew on the show.

My crew, ReQuest, was getting serious, and we knew that there was more that we had to do. We knew that the show was coming and we saw it as a huge opportunity to get our name out there. You’re immediately on national television in America. It’s so helpful for a dancer to have that kind of exposure. So, we really wanted to get on the show -- not necessarily to win the show -- but to help us out.

The show is an extension of Hip Hop International competition. That’s where you actually took off. Your megacrew, the Royal Family, were uber champions. When did that come about?

I think a lot of people have been following me since then. The first time I won, I was like, 16. It was the first big achievement that I had done my whole life.

We came back [from the competition] and we had ReQuest -- and more and more people wanted to audition. Boys and girls. So I formed the Royal Family company, and this was before the megacrew thing started. We were all really serious about dance.

Your crew won the megacrew division three times in a row -- the only crew ever to do that. You also had your own showcase in 2014, but you came back to compete the next year (coming in second). What continued to drive you?

There’s a legacy, to be honest. I mean, you win so many times, but you go back to pay tribute to everything that you’ve done. The people who come, they go watch you every year; they go to be inspired. So we have a sense of responsibility not only to represent our country but also to represent our title and our reputation and show people maybe something new every year that is inspiring to them. When you’re on top, when you’re in a certain place in your life or career, you have a responsibility to not just drop off. You need to keep fueling the people who admire what you do, because they helped you get there. A lot of people have won and just kind of forgot about it. When you win, there’s actually an opportunity for you to do something, create something. I think us winning this many times has inspired others to win. Being strong and hard-working, and people seeing that, I think it makes people strive for more.

Justin Bieber Throws up on Stage on 'Believe' Tour

Justin Bieber's concert in Arizona did not go as planned as he got sick on stage.

During his concert in Glendale, Arizona, he was singing, "Out of Town Girl" when he threw up on stage. He wrote on his twitter later, "Milk was a bad choice."

The video clip of this scene was funny because although Bieber got sick, the back dancers continued to dance the choreography, not caring at what was going on.

Bieber's album,  Believe , has sold over 887,000 copies in the U.S.

List of Backup Dancers for Justin Bieber

While we appreciated the scale and the intricacy of the Pop star’s performances and tours, it would be false to forget about backup dancers for Justin Bieber. They are a crucial part of the stage, stirring the excitement and heating the atmosphere for the entire crowd.

Who are they and where do they come from? Let’s take a look at them now!

Table of Contents

Christina Chandler

Cj salvador, david shreibman, elysandra quiñones, jett atkins and jessie hayes, jonathan rabon, kaili bright, luke broadlick, salemah gabriel, tiffany bong (the syrenz), other justin bieber’s backup dancers, final words .

Aja George

The 1987-born dancer was soon known for his Vine clips, which showed off his choreography and dance skills in a way general audiences couldn’t ignore.

He also had a credit in “The Ho Down”, a short comedy flick in 2010. In the same year, he secured a role in Step Up 3D alongside the leads Rick Malambri and Sharni Vinson, and his fame rose from there.

Not so long after, he performed with Justin Bieber on “Some Body to Love (Remix)” and joined the star on the My World Tour. Enthusiastic fans of Bieber might also recognize George from the documentary “Never Say Never”.

Aja George is currently quite inactive on social media.

Christina Chandler

Christina Chandler grew up and trained in Seattle, part of the Monsters of Hip Hip tour in 2005. In the early days, she was one of the two puzzles for the Chandler x Chandler duo with Ryan Chandler, her brother.

Chandler is most well-known for her work with Pharrell Williams, though her credits extend to renowned names such as John Legend and Taylor Swift. These gigs result in her frequent appearances on the Today Show.

By working for Justin Bieber, her experience with music videos was sharpened quite a lot with the credits in “As Long As You Love Me” and “Confident”.

Through the tours “Believe” and “Purpose”, her talents were showcased even more directly and thoroughly.

CJ Salvador

Salvador comes from Illinois and has had a passion for music ever since he was a little boy. He idolizes great artists such as Michael Jackson, who inspired him to follow their way.

However, he ended up falling in love with hip-hop, and the boyband’s dream rested by the side.

In 2011, he moved to Los Angeles and earned his first achievement with a slot on Selena Gomez’s tour. Success following success, Salvador also filmed and performed with Justin Bieber and Travis Scott on tours and TV shows.

Although the MVs he appeared in have brought him thousands and thousands of viewers, his choreography videos were what built a solid following for him.

His routines for JB’s “I’ll Show You” and Chris Brown’s “Automobiles” accumulated more than 19M views and thus made him a highly-ranked dancer in the industry.

David Shreibman

Born to a mom teaching ballet & jazz and a dad doing pantomime – both of them are on professional levels – Shreibman got into dancing at an early age like it was the most obvious thing to do.

His reputation as a B-boy traveled around fast enough to put him in competition. Conveniently, YouTube was starting to become more relevant by that time, and Shreibman believes it contributed so much to his success.

Since 2011, he has been working with Justin Bieber on various projects, but “Believe” is the first tour they did together.

Each of these 65 concerts included 19 songs. 16 of them witnessed Shreibman’s participation.

Elysandra Quiñones

Elysandra learned to dance when she was 4 years old because her mother thought dance classes would be a good way to make her girlier. Fortunately, dancing intrigued her even more than soccer did, and she became very dedicated to the studio.

Her first professional project was the movie Hannah Montana, which was quite a dreamy gig to get back in that time. In 2012, she scored a spot on Bieber’s Believe tour and continued working with him after.

Unlike many of Justin Bieber’s backup dancers, Elysandra is also a good friend who has been seen hanging out with the star. It might explain the great chemistry they have on stage!

Jett Atkins and Jessie Hayes

After defeating over ten thousand junior hip-hop dancers, the Canberra kid dancers got the chance to not only join Justin Bieber in his concert but also perform with him and have a short interview afterward.

From the interview, we learned that they are under the PLAY Dance Agency by teacher Cassie Grening.

More impressively, they had no more than 24 hours to prepare for an audition tape, wherein they showcased amazing dance skills and facial expressions.

The experience is certainly something these prodigies will never forget, and hopefully, we get to see them on the professional stage soon!

Jonathan Rabon

Rabon remembers dancing his entire life while holding strong admiration for amazing artists like Michael Jackson, Usher, and Chris Brown. After getting to high school, his attention shifted more towards the choreography side.

After securing a role in the 2008 MTV Music Awards, Rabon finally felt like he had achieved something. And he wasn’t wrong in thinking the industry had changed his life.

Aside from the 2015 tour with Justin Bieber, Rabon also got the opportunity to work with big names such as Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Selena Gomez.

Aside from this accomplishment, he spent more time teaching classes and inspiring younger dancers.

Kaili Bright

The earliest appearance Kaili Bright had in public was as a member of ReQuest, a contestant team for 2011 America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC). The fame she got from the show gave her a rather huge fanbase on Instagram.

However, afterward, the only significant achievement she got was a position in the lineup as JB’s backup dancer for the “Believe” tour.

The corresponding documentary also featured her as it gave a deeper look into the making of the show.

Luke Broadlick

Compared to most dancers, Broadlick was undoubtedly a multi-talented figure. He finished his first successful audition at age 14 and frequently appeared as a guest star on various shows.

Two years later, he has gotten a bunch of championships for martial arts under his belt and also secured a spot as Britney Spears’ backup dancer for the Circus tour.

From then onward, his career only skyrocketed to fame with many projects alongside the likes of Justin Bieber (the Believe tour), Jason Derulo, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, and many more.

Nick Baga

Growing up with Gene Kelly films, the Boston lad always knew he would love to be a figure in the entertainment industry, and his passion encouraged him to move to Los Angeles.

Hardworking and driven by a love for performing, Nick Baga ventured into different realms of the entertainment world. From blockbuster movies to nationally broadcast commercials, TV shows to award shows, his credits are extensive.

However, the majority of Nick’s career was still spent on tours with the most wanted artists in the world, such as Steve Wonder, Ricky Martin, Kelly Clarson, Jennifer Lopez, and Justin Bieber.

And fortunately for us enthusiasts, he hasn’t shown any sign of slowing down.

Salemah Gabriel

Training at the Green Hills School of Dance and mostly the DC Dance Factory Nashville, Gabriel has a wide range of skills involving ballet, jazz, tap dance, hip-hop, and lyrical .

After advancing to the semi-final in Monsters of Hip-Hop, Gabriel moved to Los Angeles and booked some big shows with Disney and Nickelodeon.

It gave Gabriel the necessary connection to perform with Justin Bieber, whose popularity was also high up in the sky with the “Believe” tour.

Although Gabriel has transitioned to film production and focused on writing & directing, she still shows great appreciation for dancing and choreographing.

Tiffany Bong

Also known as “Jimini”, Tiffany Bong takes pride in the education she has in dance and theater, which suffices to make her an entrepreneur and a leader rather than a mere artist.

With relatively many awards in hip-hop competitions, Bong has enough reputation to convince record artists to welcome her into their team and conquer world tours together. We can list a few names, like Rihanna and, of course, Justin Bieber.

If you want to learn more about Tiffany Bong, there is no better way than to look at the classes she teaches. Education makes up a large part of her successful career and doing good things for the community is simply what she loves to do.

Justin Bieber has revealed he will announce the dates for his upcoming world tour within the next week, and promises fans the worldwide jaunt will be "really special".

The 18 year-old singer performed his hit single 'Boyfriend' at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (20th May) in Las Vegas, and says it won't be long before the full details about his next tour are released.

"I think we're releasing the tour dates in like a week, so look out for that," Justin told MTV News after the event.

The 'Never Say Never' star says he and his team are currently working on plans for the tour, which will launch to support Justin's upcoming third studio album 'Believe'.

He added: "We got a lot of surprises."

The full tracklisting for Justin's album 'Believe' was revealed over the weekend, confirming that the record will feature team-up collaborations with the likes of Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Justin Bieber's Dancers Look Familiar

justin bieber believe tour choreography

It's hard to believe Justin Bieber's new album Purpose only came out 24 hours ago — I've already listened to it over a dozen times and know the lyrics to at least half the album, so it definitely feels like much longer than that. I knew I was going to love Purpose for months before it was actually released, given that he's been releasing one amazing single after another. One of my favorites is "What Do You Mean," which already has a music video but got a fresh one as part of Bieber's Purpose: The Movement movie/video series which has been hitting the web on Saturday in separate pieces released hourly via his social media. I liked the original 'What Do You Mean' video, but the update one is even more fun, and also features some familiar faces any Belieber will recognize right away.

The Purpose: The Movement version of the "What Do You Mean" video features none other than ReQuest Dance Crew, who first appeared in the dance video for Bieber's "Sorry" . As I'm sure you remember, "Sorry" featured some of the most best choreography and overall style we've seen in a long time, all courtesy of choreographer Parris Goebel . Seeing even more of the New Zealand-based dance crew in "What Do You Mean" is the cherry on top of the already delicious sundae that is Purpose .

It seems that Goebel had her hand in more than just the "Sorry" and "What Do You Mean" videos for The Movement. In fact, she's credited as director and choreographer on every video in the project, and that's major! Dancers from other troupes within her Royal Family organization feature in many of the videos, as well, though some faces are more familiar than others. One thing that's for sure is that the collaboration between Goebel and Bieber totally works both stylistically and technically — the videos are slick, expertly produced, and downright impressive.

Now that we're in a new era of Bieber's career, I hope we get to see more collaboration between himself and Goebel, whether in more videos or even in terms of his on tour choreography. The relationship feels effortless, and the results speak for themselves. Bieber is onto something, and keeping Goebel and the ReQuest crew around seems like a good place to start in ensuring he stays on that path.
