Explore one of the most powerful weapons of the past and experience naval history through fascinating permanent and temporary exhibitions, including a naval artifacts gallery and the Korean War-era HUP-2 helicopter.

USS IOWA represents the largest — and last — class of battleships built by the United States Navy. The IOWA class battleships served in every US conflict from World War II through the Gulf War in 1991.

Visit USS IOWA naval museum and experience a piece of living history.

Why is the battleship USS IOWA significant?

USS IOWA has a long and fascinating history. She was built as the lead vessel of the newest class of battleships, designed during the 1930s as the world was rapidly moving toward war. Commissioned in 1943, IOWA was used in both the Atlantic and the Pacific theaters during World War II.

One of the most significant events she took part in during the war was ferrying President Franklin D. Roosevelt and key military advisors to a top-secret meeting in North Africa with the leaders of the United States’ allies, Great Britain and Soviet Russia. At the end of the trip, the president gave a parting speech to the crew to inspire naval personnel who would go on to serve in important engagements in the Pacific. The rise of aircraft meant the dwindling of the importance of battleships. As a result, no new battleships were built after World War II ended and the IOWA class proved to be the last.

After many years of service, IOWA was decommissioned for the final time in 1990. In 2012, she became a US Navy museum ship, the only naval museum on the West Coast to feature a capital ship that saw action in World War II. Interesting fact: The navy’s history has seen four different ships that have had the name IOWA, including a new Virginia-Class submarine.

How long does it take to visit the museum?

Battleship IOWA is one of the most unique Los Angeles Museums. It’s worth a visit even if you don’t have a ton of time. But as you plan, how much time should you allow?

That depends on the type of visitor you are. Some people like to take their time, peek into every available nook and cranny, read every bit of text, and imagine what life aboard was like for the thousands of sailors who served on this venerable ship. If that’s you, plan several hours for your visit.

Others are up for adventures and want to explore areas like our engine rooms, gun turrets, and the historic captain’s cabin which has hosted the likes of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. You can have a fascinating visit and see a lot in an hour or two.

Battleship IOWA isn’t the only military museum Los Angeles has, by the way. If you’re into military history, you might enjoy a visit to one of the other Los Angeles military museums like the American Military Museum or the Fort MacArthur Museum.

What is a battleship anyway?

The term “battleship” is used to designate a large, armored warship with a main battery of large caliber, long-range guns. Battleships were the most important naval vessels from the late 1800s until WWII.

This type of ship had its origins during the US Civil War, when both the North and the South produced iron-clad warships. A famous naval battle just north of Norfolk, VA between the USS MONITOR and the USS MERRIMACK (rebuilt and renamed the CSS VIRGINIA by the South) demonstrated that existing wooden ships had become obsolete.

In 1869, the HMS MONARCH, built by Great Britain, became the first ocean-going iron-hulled battleship. One of the changes that began to show up on Civil War ships was the replacement of broadside guns pointing out of portholes in the side of the ship with guns mounted in swiveling turrets on the main deck. MONARCH embraced this change fully and represented the first truly modern warship.

From that point, battleships got bigger, faster, and sported guns with increasing range and caliber. USS IOWA, for example, was built with 9 16-inch guns that could fire 2,700 lb shells a distance of more than 20 miles with great accuracy. USS IOWA’s top speed was about 35 knots, roughly 40 miles per hour.

The first battleship built for the US navy was USS MAINE, constructed in the navy yard in New York City. The last, never finished, was KENTUCKY, whose construction came to an end in 1947 at the Norfolk Navy Yard. In total, the naval history of the U.S. includes the construction of 59 battleships of 23 different classes.

Are battleships still important in naval combat?

The United States Navy no longer has any battleships in its fleet. If you read the answer above about battleships, you’ll know that the last ones were built during WWII.

So why did this awesome naval weapon stop being used?

The answer has to do with the rise of naval aviation. Large ships like IOWA are vulnerable to attacks from above by aircraft. The experience of WWII demonstrated this dramatically when Japan’s YAMATO, the largest and most powerful battleship ever constructed, was sunk by allied aircraft in 1945.

During that war, the aircraft carrier was taking the place of the battleship as the most important naval vessel. That remains true today. Because of its size, an aircraft carrier is relatively vulnerable, which means ships that are a bit like a battleship but smaller in size — cruisers and destroyers — continue to have a role in providing protection as escorts in an aircraft carrier fleet.

How many US Navy ships are museums?

There is a large number of naval history exhibits around the country that feature ships from the United States Navy. The greatest number are ships from WWII. The oldest is the USS CONSTITUTION, whose construction began in 1797 and which is still a commissioned ship.

If you’re a fan of U.S. naval history, be sure to visit the National Museum of the United States Navy (or U.S. Navy Museum) the next time you’re on the East Coast. The flagship museum of U.S. naval history, it’s located in what used to be the naval gun factory, part of the facilities of the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.

The Washington Navy Yard, beginning in the early 1800s, was an important center of ship and gun production for the U.S. navy until ordinance and gun production ceased in 1961. The new national museum of the Navy, sometimes colloquially called the Naval Gun Factory Museum, was opened in 1963.

If you’re interested in maritime history beyond the military focus of a naval museum, Los Angeles also hosts the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.

Want to embark on the world's biggest cruise ship? These 10 make quite a splash.

Portrait of Clare Mulroy

Does size really matter?

We’re talking, of course, about the world’s largest cruise ships. For some travelers, bigger automatically means better. But if you’re going to shell out your hard-earned dollars for a vacation on one of the top lines, it’s important to research if the experience is a good fit for you.

You may be looking for a party-packed weekend with other young travelers or a family adventure with something for both kids and adults. But if you won’t settle for anything but colossal, here’s what you need to know about record-breaking ships.

What is the biggest cruise ship?

The Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world. The nearly 1,200-foot ship set sail in January 2024 and accommodates 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members, according to Royal Caribbean.

According to the DNV, the leading maritime register, the Icon of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 248,663 . Gross tonnage measures a ship’s total volume.

Icon of the Seas’ maiden voyage was so highly anticipated that it nearly sold out in just a few hours, Business Insider reported. Some cruise-goers even paid $75,000 a week to stay in an exclusive three-story townhouse complete with private balconies, a whirlpool, a backyard and slides.

Here are the 10 largest cruise ships in the world and how much they weigh in gross tonnage, according to the DNV and VesselFinder :

  • Icon of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 248,663
  • Utopia of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 236,473
  • Wonder of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 235,600
  • Symphony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 228,081
  • Harmony of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 226,963
  • Oasis of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 226,838
  • Allure of the Seas (Royal Caribbean): 225,282
  • MSC World Europa (MSC Cruises): 215,863
  • Costa Toscana (Costa Cruises): 186,364
  • P&O Arvia (P&O Cruises): 185,581

You will get your steps in: How to make the most of the Icon of the Seas

What is the biggest ship ever built?

The Icon of the Seas might be the biggest cruise ship to set sail, but it’s not the largest boat in the history of maritime travel. The Seawise Giant, also known as the Knock Nevis, was the biggest ship ever built at 564,739 tons, according to The New York Times.

The oil tanker was built in the 1970s but caught fire and sank in 1988 after Iraqi planes bombed an offshore terminal. A Norwegian company rescued it a year later from shallow waters and repaired it. The Seawise Giant continued transporting oil until its final journey concluded in December 2009.

How big was the Titanic?

The Titanic was about 883 feet long and had a gross tonnage of 46,329 tons – it’s sizable, but much smaller than the world’s biggest ship; the Icon of the Seas which is 1,200 feet long and has a gross tonnage of 248,663.

There were over 2,200 passengers on the Titanic – more than 1,500 of them died in the 1912 sinking.

12-Year-Old Boy Falls to His Death from Balcony of Cruise Ship Heading for Galveston, Texas

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests," Royal Caribbean told PEOPLE in a statement

A 12-year-old boy has died after falling from the balcony of a cruise ship.

The pre-teen was aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas — which was en route to Galveston, Texas at the end of a week-long cruise — when the incident happened on Saturday, Sept. 7.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

PEOPLE has confirmed that the boy fell at the ‘Central Park’ area of the ship, located on deck 8, where many of the vessel’s bars, restaurants and shops live. He sadly died before the vessel docked in Texas.

The news comes after a 16-year-old boy also fell to his death on the ship back in 2019.

According to multiple outlets, the teenager fell while attempting to climb into his room from the balcony.

At the time, Royal Caribbean corporate communications manager, Owen Torres, confirmed the death in a statement to PEOPLE. “We are saddened by the loss of one of our guests in a tragic accident,” the statement read.

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement at the time that the boy was on the eighth floor of Harmony of the Seas when he attempted to climb into his room because he forgot his room key.

According to a press release from Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas was the world’s largest cruise liner when it launched in 2016. She departed on her maiden voyage in November 2016 from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The vessel has 16 guest decks, 2,747 staterooms and can carry over 5,000 guests.

A 5-STAR BARRIER ISLAND BEACH EXPERIENCE

ship tour tour

"What a great place to visit. We took the trip out from Biloxi on Captain Pete the Crew on the Boat was great. Once out on the Island it was awesome to see the old Fort and the Island was great. Snack bar with clean restrooms a great day away from everything. We will definitely do it again when we are down there."

a bird flying over a beach next to the ocean

"Was worth every penny to take the boat out to Ship Island... On the way out and trip back we saw dolphins! The boat was fully shaded and crew was very nice. Ship Island itself is beautiful, water is clear all around it and you will see all kinds of wildlife. The water was much better for swimming than the mainland. Whole experience was amazing, one of the best beaches I have been to. Wanted to go back the next day!"

ship tour tour

"We went here because there wasn't anything to do but swim, walk on the beach, or sunbathe. We walked on the beach, then took the fort tour, which was interesting. We had a blast. The best news was that the concession stand had reasonably priced food and drinks, and you can rent umbrellas and chairs so you don't need to drag it with you."

ship tour tour

"We purchased tickets online one day before our trip. It was simple and user friendly. We arrived early for the 9:00am departure. Thankfully we did, they had to use two boats for the 9:00 departure. We were able to get onto that first boat, which ensured us an umbrella and chair rental. The day was beautiful, water was clear...it was a wonderful family day trip."

"This is a terrific day-trip! Bring an ice chest, rest chairs and an umbrella and get ready for a great beach adventure. I love going to Ship Island and have been doing it for many years now. It's a bargain and it is a treat to spend the day there! Go! Do it! Love it!"

Boy, 12, dies after falling from balcony on cruise ship

The cruise ship The Harmony of the Seas, where a boy fell to his death

A 12-year-old boy fell to his death from a balcony on a Caribbean cruise liner.

The Harmony of the Seas ship, run by Royal Caribbean Cruises, was on the final night of a seven-day trip around the islands and was heading towards Texas when the tragedy happened.

Witnesses say he fell over his cabin’s balcony railings and into the internal Central Park atrium area of the boat on Saturday night, shortly after playing with friends he’d made onboard.

Staff tried to resuscitate the youngster but he died before the ship docked in Galveston, Texas.

It’s believed the boy was travelling with his family, including two sisters, for a birthday celebration.

‘My daughter was friends with him and said he was upset today,’ posted Sara Tullas on a  Facebook  page for passengers. ‘She is so upset. I wish I would have known he was struggling today.’

The balconies overlooking the atrium

Royal Caribbean confirmed the death had occurred on board and that staff were in contact with the family.

The cruise firm did not release anymore information but witnesses claim he fell from his family’s cabin on deck 14 to the Central Park atrium on Deck 8 at around 5pm.

‘We were a few rooms down and saw undercover cops investigating the room this morning,’ wrote Melissa Anderson on the Facebook page. ‘Birthday decorations on the door and inside the room, with a chair pushed against the balcony.’

‘It had rained that afternoon and the balconies were damp,’ added Becky Potter. ‘It would be difficult to fall if you stand on the ground, but if on the chairs or wet table top anything is possible.’

The balconies of the boat

When it was launched in 2016, the French-built ship was the world’s largest cruise liner, able to accommodate more than 7,000 passengers.

Popular with families, it offers ‘endless opportunities’ for children to ‘make friends and engage in fun, educational, supervised activities with other cruisers in their age group’.

The boy had taken part in the cruise’s teen-club, and many passengers said their children had got to know the boy before his death.

The conversations I have had to have with my son really tripped me up,’ wrote Shannon Elizabeth from Belfair in Washington.

‘My son and him actually got really close on the cruise, and he saw too much of what happened.’

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Metro: ‘We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests.

‘Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time.

‘For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.’

What is the s.s. john w. brown.

Welcome aboard S.S. JOHN W. BROWN, one of only two remaining, fully operational Liberty ships that participated in World War II. This wonderful piece of history provides an educational and historical opportunity for the public to experience 1944 all over again, without the dangers of being sunk by a submarine or a torpedo bomber!

Through the efforts of talented and dedicated volunteers, coupled with the generous financial support of members and friends, S.S. JOHN W. BROWN continues to educate by operating as a historic museum ship, furnishing visitors with a unique opportunity to experience "living history" of the World War II merchant marine.

2022 is our 80th Anniversary; pretty amazing for a ship that was built quickly and was considered 'paid for' if it made one voyage (across the ocean and back).   To read more about the history of the ship, click here or the ABOUT tab above.

'Titanic moment': Carnival cruise ship from Seattle hits iceberg in Alaska

SEATTLE - A Carnival Cruise Line ship from Seattle struck "an errant piece of drifting ice" while sailing in Alaska last Thursday, according to the company.

The Carnival Spirit, which set sail from Seattle on Wednesday, hit the ice in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska.

The cruise ship underwent assessment and no damage to the hull was found, Carnival said. The seven-day cruise arrived back in Seattle on Tuesday.

The company also said the incident had no impact on its operations, however some users on social media claimed it felt like a "Titanic moment."

Passengers of the ship captured photos and video of the ice collision, some documenting the frightening encounter on Facebook and X.

One user added that Carnival did an "amazing job of keeping all the passengers and staff safe and updated."

Carnival said in a statement to FOX Business that the ship did not experience delays, and that the Spirit "arrived in Skagway on Friday as scheduled."

The Carnival Spirit was built in 2001 and can carry just over 2,600 guests with 920 team members onboard. The ship recently embarked on another round trip voyage to Alaska, this one for 14 days.

Carnival cruise ship collides with iceberg

The Carnival Spirit cruise ship, photographed here sailing Alaska, recently collided with an iceberg near the city of Juneau. (Carnival Cruise Line via CNN Newsource)

The words “Titanic moment” are possibly the last thing you want to hear on a boat – but that was the phrase used by one passenger on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship last week, after the vessel unexpectedly struck an iceberg.

No one was hurt on board and the ship was undamaged by the incident, which a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson described as the vessel hitting “an errant piece of drifting ice.”

  • Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts and video on all the top stories

Carnival Spirit was sailing in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska, a waterway south of the city of Juneau known for its spectacular beauty – and pieces of floating ice.

Videos of the incident circulated on social media in the aftermath, as multiple passengers filmed the moment the ship collided with the iceberg.

Cassandra Goskie posted a video on TikTok in which a voice is heard saying: “If we die it was damn well worth it, it’s a Titanic moment,” just before the vessel struck the piece of ice.

Meanwhile passenger Saurabh Singhal described the vessel coming to a halt “for hours to assess damages” in a Facebook post.

“An assessment determined no damage to the ship’s hull and the vessel continued on its cruise and there has been no impact to operations,” the Carnival spokesperson told CNN Travel.

The Carnival Spirit finished its seven-day Alaska cruise on Tuesday without interruption, returning to Seattle, Washington. The vessel has since embarked on another round trip to Alaska, this time for 14 days.

In 2022, Norwegian Cruise Line vessel Norwegian Sun hit a piece of an iceberg while sailing in Alaska, sustaining damage to its starboard bow. There were no injuries.

Alaska is a popular cruise destination, but there’s reportedly been pushback in recent years from locals concerned about over congested waterways in the region.

Alaska’s waters are also known as some of the most challenging for cruise ships to navigate.

“That ice is hard and can damage the hull or propellers,” Captain John Herring, a marine pilot in southeast Alaska who boards ships in the region to help ensure safe passage, told CNN Travel in 2022.   “Strong winds and currents make navigating icy waters even harder.”

Despite these difficult conditions, “we very rarely – if ever – see any issues related to sailings in icy waters,” said cruise expert Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic, a review site and online cruise community.

“Today’s cruise ships are specifically built to sail a number of different waters,” Gray Faust told CNN Travel. “Those that sail in Alaska are not only able to withstand icy waters, they have experienced captains who are familiar with the landscape, which is why the incident being reported caused no issue to the ship or the sailing.”
