Discounts and money off you can get by buying a Railcard in 2024
O ver 20 million Brits are eligible for a Railcard. Getting one can give you some major discounts and money off train fares as costs continues to rise. If you're a daily commuter or someone who travels regularly, getting a Railcard can be a great way to save money.
There are nine different types of cards available, and depending on where you live, your age and if you have a young family, you may be eligible for at least one. For some, getting a Railcard means benefitting from an enormous 60 per cent off train travel.
This is particularly useful in 2024 as on March 3 rail fares in England will rise by 4.9 per cent, 8.7 per cent in Scotland from April, while Wales and Northern Ireland are yet to make an announcement. The UK has one of the oldest rail networks in the entirety of Europe - and one of the most expensive per mile.

16-25 Railcard
For those aged 16-25, you can save a 1/3 off rail fares for days and nights out with friends, seeing family, going to school , college or university. Purchase a one-year 16-25 Railcard for just £30 or three years Railcard for £70.
16-17 Saver
For those aged 16 or 17, enjoy 50 per cent off standard Anytime, Off-Peak, Advance and Season tickets, for just £30 a year.
26-30 Railcard
Costing £30, those aged 26-30 years old can save 1/3 on most rail fares to travel across Britain for a year. The 26-30 Railcard is the first digital-only Railcard and it is available to buy online and download to the Railcard app on your smartphone.
Network Railcard
For those travelling in South East England and aged 16 or over, you can get an average annual saving of £191. The Network Railcard, £30 for a year, spans more than 16 counties in the South East including Greater London and in the area bounded by places as far afield as Exeter, Worcester, Northampton and Kings Lynn.
Family & Friends Railcard
Children aged 5-15 get 60 per cent discount on kids fares. Up to four adults and four children can travel on one card and it costs £30 a year (£70 for three) years, but you could easily save this on your first trip.
Senior Railcard
For those aged 60 and over, save a third off rail fares for days out, holidays, seeing family and friends or whatever you choose. A Senior Railcard costs £30 for one year and £70 for three.
Two Together Railcard
For two named people travelling together, you get an average annual saving of £129 plus special partner discounts. At just £30 a year - split the cost between you and it's £15 each.
Disabled Persons Railcard
If you have a disability that makes travelling by train difficult, you may qualify for a Disabled Persons Railcard. Just £20 for one year or £54 for three years, discounts are applicable on both peak and off-peak tickets and cover you and a travelling companion.
Veterans Railcard
If you are a veteran of the UK Armed Forces, you may qualify for a Veterans Railcard. You can save up to a third off fares and the card costs £30 for a year or £70 for three.
