Tim Cappello: The Story Behind The Bodybuilding Sax Icon

Tim Capello

Tim Cappello (born May 3, 1955) is an American musician, composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist.

Cappello is mainly known for his work as the Tina Turner sax player in the 1980s and 90s, as well as turning heads with his iconic performance in the 1987 vampire film, ‘The Lost Boys’.

After struggling with heroin addiction during his early days of performing tenor saxophone with Peter Gabriel, Tim Cappello decided to quit cold turkey in 1979 and began to body-build in 1980.

Since then, he has become most known for his muscular physique, sexually provocative performances, and a tendency to perform shirtless. It shouldn’t come as a surprise by this point that he also oiled his skin and tied his hair in a ponytail.

It may come as a surprise to jazz fans that the cheesy saxman studied under the jazz legend Lennie Tristano before he made it big.

The Learning Years

Tim Cappello, sometimes credited as Timmy Cappello, grew up in Silver Lake of Harrison, New York. It is no wonder that Cappello went on to pursue music, given that his father was a local conductor and music teacher. Cappello began studying music at age 4.

At just age 15, Cappello dropped out of high school to pursue further education in music at the New England Conservatory of Music , where he was accepted. He played both drums and keyboard for his audition.

Upon leaving the New England Conservatory, Cappello sought out his idol, the jazz legend, Lennie Tristano, for guidance. He intermittently studied under Tristano for four years and managed to land several gigs during this time.

Cappello’s first gig was as a pianist behind comedian Billy Crystal , who was an early stand-up act at the time. This gig lasted five years, before landing a gig on the road with Eric Carmen of The Raspberries, which he got from jamming at as many clubs as he could in and around town.

This was a real jumping-off point for Tim Cappello’s career, and his first big, ‘professional’ gig.

The Formative Years

From this jumping-off point, Cappello’s old schoolmate, Jerry Moratta, got Cappello a gig with singer-songwriter Garland Jeffreys, who Cappello toured with through 1978.

Shortly afterwards, Moratta started playing with Peter Gabriel and managed to bring Cappello with him into that band as well.

Cappello toured with Peter Gabriel, as well as playing on both of his albums ‘Peter Gabriel 1: Car’ and ‘Peter Gabriel 2: Scratch’

Unfortunately, Cappello suffered from extreme drug use, primarily heroin, during his time on the road with Peter Gabriel, and has since said that he regrets not being able to get the most out of it.

It was after his time with Peter Gabriel, on his 25th birthday, that Cappello had a dramatic incident whilst visiting his parents. After his niece saw him in such poor condition from his heavy drug use, Cappello quit cold turkey. Cappello said of the event:

“ It made me realize what I was doing not only to myself but to them. It cut me so deeply that it was hard not to quit. “

It was amidst pulling himself out of addiction that Cappello stumbled across bodybuilding, an obsession to replace his crippling drug addiction. This dedication to his body ended up not just being great for his health, but his career, too.

Tim Cappello Post-Addiction

Cappello’s dramatic change in health and looks made him a valuable asset as a stage performer. This greatly attracted famed singer-songwriter Carly Simon, who hired Cappello for his stage persona in 1980.

Motivated by her crippling stage fright, Simon wanted a band full of confident and eccentric performers to offset her lack of showmanship.

After the tour was cut short due to a frightened Simon offering members of the audience to come on-stage – which went about as well as you’d expect -, Cappello formed his own band, The Ken Dolls , who played through 1981-1982.

The Ken Dolls played mainly at the CBGB , a notorious music club that opened in 1973. Many acts played at the venue during their grass-roots period, such as the Ramones , Blondie , and the Talking Heads . It was mainly a punk venue.

Unfortunately for Cappello, the band was banned from CBGB, likely due to their overtly sexual performances.

After his attempt as a bandleader, Cappello found himself playing for Tina Turner, who was up-and-coming at the time.

Cappello met Turner through a mutual friend of both their managers and was forced to audition off-stage at a small gig with a saxophone solo for Turner’s song ‘Help!’

Lucky for him, Cappello impressed Turner and was hired in 1984. Cappello went on to play with Turner for fifteen years.

Despite his long-running career alongside Tina Turner, Cappello is perhaps more famed for his brief appearance and performance in the 1987 vampire film ‘The Lost Boys’ , which has since been parodied by Jon Hamm on Saturday Night Live .

In the movie, Timmy Cappello performs the song ‘I Still Believe’ , as he discusses here:

Cappello can be heard on some of Turner’s biggest tunes, like ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’ and ‘One of the Living’ which is featured on the Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome soundtrack . Cappello also appeared in the music videos for both songs.

He may not be one of the greatest saxophone players to have lived if you ask the average jazz fan, but you can’t question his showmanship. With his slicked-back hair, bulging muscles and provocative stage presence, Tim Cappello is the original Sexy Sax Man .

If you haven’t seen ‘The Lost Boys’, it’s well worth checking out for his iconic musical performance alone.

Awesome feature! If you want to keep up with Tim, he is a big feature in Gunship, a fantastic band that is heralding in the next era of 80s synthwave. Tim is even featured in the new video “Monster In Paradise,” and it is a sweet throwback to his Lost Boys appearance. He contributed to 5 of the songs on the last album, too. Secretly enjoying that music alongside my newfound appreciation for Andrew Hill, Gary McFarland, early Sun Ra, Phineas Newborn, Jr., Paul Horn and Elmo Hope.

Does he look as good as he did then?

I saw him in Lost Boys and thought he was a knockout. 🥰

There’s nothing like the sound of a sax…

Yes, that is very TRUE. Nothing better than Sax at Night, Sax in the Morning, and Sax in the Afternoon. And Tim Cappello is the BEST!!!! And sexiest.

Right. The sax has a very masculine, sexy, longing sound.

  • I Still Believe: The Tim Cappello Interview by Brandon Sweet 08/24/22

by lon | Aug 24, 2022 | Blog

I Still Believe: The Tim Cappello Interview

The night of August 17, Record Archive was truly alive. Tim Cappello rocked the stage where over 100 people gathered to witness in the back lounge of Record Archive. Record Archive has a handful of regulars that come in every Wednesday night to let loose and unwind with truly great music. These regulars were met with a gathering of humble fans of Tim Cappello. From start to finish the crowd was loving it. Behind the bar, myself and my fellow co-workers were having a ball. This night hardly felt like work at all. The staff alongside the crowd were rocking all night as if we were hypnotized by Tim’s stage presence and his mastery of the saxophone. We were induced in this sort of Dionysion drunkenness, where the true meaning and intent of Record Archive was put on a display.

Tim Cappello for those who don’t know is a professional saxophone player who has toured with the likes of Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel, Ringo Starr, and others. Most notably, Tim is remembered for his musical performance for the 1987 movie The Lost Boys. Standing over 6 feet tall, Tim is full of muscle and is usually oiled up for his performances. This was inherently true for his performance at Record Archive.

Before the performance I had the honor of interviewing Tim. Where we truly “walked and talked” as Tim put it. Below are the questions and answers from the interview: You have toured with Tina Turner, and produced the soundtrack of the 1987 hit movie The Lost Boys. What would you say was the defining moment or the highlight of your career? To my surprise, Tim revealed that his favorite part of his impressive career is now. In an honest answer, Tim is happy touring for himself, as he humbly said “I am no one’s second banana.” Tim mentioned that his shows are selling out, and this solo tour is not a hindrance financially by any means. The packed houses make him “happy as a damn clam.” Tim is impressed and delighted that after 35 years of the initial release of The Lost Boys, he is able to perform his hit song “I Still Believe.” Which is the track he performed during the filming of the movie. Tim says that he is going to be performing for audiences until he “hits a high g, and has an aneurysm right on the stage.” From the first question I could tell that this is a man that is simply just doing what he loves.

Your album that was released in 2018 (Blood On The Reed) has influences of Chuck Berry and other greats. Did they help you directly to cultivate the album or was it more of an ode to the legends of rock and roll?

Tim shared with me that the cultivation of his album Blood On The Reed was for certain an ode to his favorite musicians of Rock and Roll, but it was produced in a way that gave Tim the ability to make the album his own. Tim says the music from the greats, as mentioned above, “it’s music that is so deeply ingrained in me” which helped Tim find ease in the production of his album. Tim expressed his ability to make existing music into his own style. For example,Tim says that he was able to make Bob Dylan’s music his own by “turning it into a heavy metal Jamaican dance hall.” Or by taking “I put a spell on you” from a ballad and “turning it into a heavy sort of 80’s dance song.” Tim mentions that he has always wanted to make this kind of music in his own way, but couldn’t because of his time touring with other musicians and artists. Blood On The Reed released in 2018, but Tim was unable to tour because of the pandemic brought on by COVID-19.

I’ve sold countless tickets for your performance here at Record Archive. The public seems to be very excited that you are performing. What are you looking forward to during your concert Wednesday night? Also are there any more concerts that are coming up that you would like to acknowledge?

Tim makes it clear that after his performance at Record Archive, he has ten more weeks of his tour. In total Tim’s tour is thirteen weeks long. In an enthusiastic response to the second part of my question ,Tim states that “ my thing is just to see those smiles, that’s just it, to see those smiles, see people laughing, see people dancing.” Tim goes on to elaborate that after the show he receives a rush of euphoria that “knocks you back a little.” Tim recognizes that this tour and the feelings he receives from finally touring his solo album “is absolutely the most fun I have ever had.”

Just three questions regarding his performance at Record Archive, his career while touring with music greats, and information on his solo album, have led me to believe that Tim Cappello is a very humble individual with clear intentions to make people smile and have a good time. I was able to take in and learn a lot from Tim and his experiences as being a professional musician.

I would like to thank Tim Cappello for taking the time right before his performance to talk with me as well as putting on a great show. Everyone enjoyed it, and being able to witness a unifying enjoyment with everyone that night was truly a moment I hope to never forget. Thank you to my boss at Record Archive, Alayna Alderman, for setting up the interview. Thank you to my co-workers at Record Archive for welcoming me aboard with open arms and showing the utmost patience in making me feel comfortable. Last but certainly not the least, thank you to the supporters of Record Archive. All my joys in working at Record Archive would not be possible without the kind customers who come in everyday.

justin timberlake forget tomorrow world tour review 2024

Who says the pop star is dead? At his triumphant tour stop in Los Angeles Saturday night, Justin Timberlake led a revival for the reigning Prince of Pop, with a setlist of greatest hits and new material that proves the Grammy-winning entertainer is here to stay.

Related Stories

Jessica biel talks about shielding her children from paparazzi, justin timberlake unveils tracklist for new album, includes another new nsync song.

Dressed in a glittery black suit and trousers, the singer opened with “No Angels,” a disco-lite cut off EITIW that immediately had the crowd on its feet. Backed by a trio of background singers and a full band (including a four-piece horn section), Timberlake and his “ Tennessee Kids ” followed with a tight triple whammy of “LoveStoned,” “Like I Love You” and “My Love” before slowing things down with “Technicolor,” a seductive slow jam that finds the singer worshipping his “modern day” Marilyn Monroe.

Timberlake has made headlines over the last few months for his off-the-cuff comments , but on Saturday, the singer let his music do most of the talking, while showing off some slick choreography that proved he — literally — hasn’t missed a step. Playful, self-assured and just a tad rambunctious, Timberlake was at his best on crowd-pleasers like “FutureSex/LoveSound” and “Summer Love,” the latter of which gave the star a chance to bust out some rump-shaking moves during a mid-song dance break.

Fans immediately leaped back to their feet when the familiar piano opening of “Cry Me a River” began to play. “That got your ass up!” Timberlake quipped about his controversial track , which came surprisingly early on in the night.

Timberlake didn’t say much else during the concert, though he did note that it was “a special night,” with many of his friends and family in the L.A. audience. Wife Jessica Biel wasn’t seen in the crowd, but an acoustic medley of ballads performed on a side stage included Timberlake’s recent single, “Selfish,” which the singer wrote about his longtime partner.

Indeed, Timberlake has been entertaining fans for a long time, too. “I feel like we’ve grown up together,” the singer said at one point of the night, shouting out “a little group called NSYNC” for giving him his start in the music industry (while NSYNC reunited for a one-off Timberlake show at The Wiltern in March, there was no reunion, alas, on Saturday).

“I’ve grown up with you and you’ve grown up with me,” the singer said. “I’m never going to forget it and I have so much gratitude for each and every one of you here tonight.”
