80 NJ Transit train stations aren't accessible to the disabled. Money is on the way

EAST ORANGE — City residents and their local representatives have been fighting since at least 2018 to get accessibility improvements and repair work done at the two NJ Transit stations that serve the city of about 70,000.

Thanks to a new federal grant program, they are halfway there.

An $83.3 million grant was announced Tuesday morning for wide-ranging repairs and upgrades to NJ Transit’s Brick Church station, one of eight awards announced through the All Stations Accessibility Program, a federal grant program created two and a half years ago when the Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act was signed into law.

NJ Transit is chipping in $20.9 million for the local match, which made the agency eligible to compete for the grant.

For Kevin Corbett, CEO and president of NJ Transit, the investment in Brick Church goes beyond one station.

“This is really a great example of not just a station improvement but really revitalizing a whole neighborhood,” Corbett said, noting the mixed-use residential development rising next to the station.

“This kind of project is one of the best investments we can make in New Jersey, this project will stand the test of time for decades to come, improving the lives of countless commuters, promoting a cleaner, more sustainable planet by enhancing public transit’s accessibility, supporting economic growth and vitality for generations to come.”

State Sen. Britnee Timberlake, whose hometown is East Orange, described how modernizing the city’s transit stations were among her first priorities after getting elected to the state Assembly in 2018.

She said she and Mayor Ted Green had long wanted to improve access to terminals for those with disabilities, and recalled the community's older residents "who came with a PowerPoint presentation and said, ‘We have disparities that exist.’ And they went and took pictures of train stations all around the region and came back and said, ‘Will you help us?’” Timberlake said. “We did not stop until this day was realized.”

A four-year construction program will take place at the station and include the following upgrades:

Installing two elevators

Installing high-level platforms

Adding security cameras and other safety measures

Renovating a pedestrian tunnel and stairways.

Many rail stations in the U.S. are not accessible to the disabled

For NJ Transit and other transit agencies around the country that inherited rail infrastructure several decades old, it is a costly endeavor to bring these facilities into compliance with modern day code and accessibility requirements.

That is why this five-year, $1.7 billion federal competitive grant program was created, said Veronica Vanterpool, acting administrator of the Federal Transit Administration that oversees the program.

“We have many transit systems, particularly our older ones, that are not accessible to everyone that needs them and that means transit cannot be the lifeline of opportunity for everyone, only for some — and what we’re trying to do here is level that playing field,” Vanterpool said, noting that 951 of the 3,720 rail stations in the country are inaccessible to those with disabilities.

In addition to Timberlake and Green, Vanterpool was joined by U.S. Reps. Mikie Sherrill and Rob Menendez and posthumous mentions were given to U.S. Rep. Donald Payne, who died earlier this month — all of whom voted in favor of the IIJA bill or have helped ensure that dollars from competitive grant programs like this one get back to New Jersey districts.

Of the 166 rail stations that serve NJ Transit trains and customers, more than 80 stations are not accessible, per the federal Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. And of those stations that are considered accessible, five were identified by the U.S. Attorney’s office in 2022 for falling out of compliance with the ADA , requiring a settlement agreement to make more than 200 fixes and address violations.

Since Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration took over in 2018, more than $6 billion in capital projects has gotten underway at NJ Transit, including rehabilitation programs at 20 rail stations. The $83 million that will be invested in Brick Church station is more money than was spent on the agency’s entire capital program in 2017, Corbett noted.

Timberlake applauded the progress, but reminded the dignitaries and agency officials in attendance that more work — and money — will be needed to continue that momentum.

“While yes, this is a dream, I have another one and it’s right down the street and Kevin knows all about it,” Timberlake said, referring to the city’s other station that also isn’t ADA compliant. Next, she said, “We’re going to go after more money for the East Orange station.”

Alaska Airlines buys former Boeing building in Renton’s Longacres

A Puget Sound property that once housed Boeing’s state-of-the-art training facility is set for a revival under the ownership of Alaska Airlines.

The SeaTac-based airline announced Thursday it has purchased a 600,000-square-foot facility in Renton with plans to transform the site into a hub for training the airline’s pilots, flight attendants and other employees. 

The $86 million deal comes as Alaska Airlines expects its bottom line to rebound this year following January’s midair door plug blowout during an Alaska flight. The airline has been renting a portion of the building since 2021 and now plans $100 million in renovations, touting the value of a hub where employees in different job groups can train together.

The sale also marks the next step for the ongoing transformation of the larger Longacres campus where Boeing once housed its Commercial Airplanes headquarters along with the training facility. Boeing sold the property to the real estate investment firm Unico Properties in 2021 for $100 million. The campus includes two office buildings, a daycare, parking lots and undeveloped land.

Alaska’s purchase from Unico includes the three-story North Building and its parking lot. Elsewhere on the site, the Seattle Sounders have transformed the other, five-story office building into a gleaming new training facility . 

The airline already operates nine full-motion flight simulators in the newly purchased building. Alaska plans to add another simulator and “a mock aircraft for inflight simulations,” the company said Thursday. 

“Having access to a facility that was purpose-built for aviation training that we then get to customize was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” Shane Jones, a senior vice president at Alaska, said in a statement. 

The facility will also include office space, classrooms and an auditorium. Along with pilots and other employees coming to the site for training, about 600 Alaska employees in operations, labor relations and other departments will have offices at the site. Alaska’s corporate headquarters will remain in SeaTac.

Today, Alaska’s simulation equipment is spread across different cities. The Renton training center will be the first time the company’s “frontline employees from different workgroups will train under the same roof,” Alaska spokesperson Tricia Bruckbauer said in an email.

For example, pilots and flight attendants may train together for onboard scenarios. “Being in one training facility creates many more opportunities that don’t easily exist today,” Bruckbauer said.

The property’s aviation story dates back more than three decades.  

Boeing bought the 215-acre former racetrack in 1990 as the company’s presence in the region was booming. Facing a backlog of commercial jet orders, Boeing was snapping up new property and expanding its existing sites. 

After touring training facilities around the globe, Boeing designed the Renton center with classrooms, large simulator bays and a mural of a 737 cockpit, said Peter Morton, a former vice president at Boeing who led planning for the facility in the ‘90s.

But by 2013, Longacres’ significance was waning. Boeing moved the simulators to Miami and spread its training across other locations. Later, in the wake of the pandemic, the jet maker emptied the campus in early 2021 and put it up for sale. It was one of half a dozen local properties Boeing offloaded as it sought to cut costs.

The Longacres campus today is a bit smaller than Boeing’s once was. After Boeing sold off several parcels, Unico eventually purchased 158 acres.

Morton said this week he was glad to hear the training building “is going back to its original purpose, which is to train pilots and maintenance technicians on how to do their job in a world-class way.”

Relocating flight simulators is “not a trivial task,” Morton said. “If you’re looking for a training center, it’s nice to find something other than an empty warehouse where you have to start from scratch.”

The greater Longacres campus is still in transition. Of the campus’s nearly 963,000 square feet of office space, about a quarter is vacant, roughly in line with vacancy rates across all office space in Renton . In addition to the Sounders and Alaska, Unico believes the campus could eventually include 3,000 newly constructed apartments . Details remain sparse about who might develop that housing and when.

• 64-bit binaries have been added for the Blueprint Editor 2 and associated command line tools ConvertToGEO, ConvertToTG and Serz. These 64-bit tools have a “64” suffix to distinguish them from the 32-bit versions. The 64-bit Blueprint Editor 2 is contained within a Tools/x64 subfolder. These tools are currently considered experimental and feedback on their functionality is requested. Note that on first run of the 64-bit Blueprint Editor, the user should set the RailWorks Folder correctly by using the Tools > Options menu item and restarting the app. These tools are designed to be run in the Tools/x64 folder and should not be copied into a different location, nor should the Schema be copied into this x64 folder. ​
• This could cause the application to silently fail before the splash screen. By default, PhysX is now initialised using software rather than hardware. The hardware initialisation could cause a crash on non-CUDA GPUs.
• In some cases, this bug could result in SilverLining sky being replaced by the default sky (although SilverLining precipitation would still work). The magnitude for stars should be adjustable by editing the SilverLining config file if required.
• Increased the size of the heap using for loading geometry in 64-bit mode from 1 GB to 2 GB to stop some out of memory errors on the streaming heap.
• Fix for a situation where a D3D "Device Not Reset" error can occur without first getting a "Device Lost" error. This should fix the remaining D3D crashes, such as those on alt-tab switching.
• The FPS limit now defaults to 60fps (as opposed to 30fps). This limit is now enforced during menus and pause screens in all cases (no matter what command line option is used) to reduce uncapped frame rates and excessive CPU usage whilst browsing the menus, especially with some Ryzen CPUs.
• Fast sound update optimisations have been implemented but are disabled by default due to triggering failures. These changes spread updates to sounds over multiple frames but could cause problems with delayed sound triggering. This can be accessed by using the command line "-FastSoundUpdate" with an optional value for the update factor, e.g. "-FastSoundUpdate=10" (the default when enabled).
• A new command line option "-ShowScriptTiming" has been added to aid developers when optimising their Lua scripts. This renders an overlay on screen showing all the Lua scripts that are being called, the total number of calls, and the total time spent in them.
• A new command line option "-ShowAverageTiming" (which must be used in conjunction with ShowScriptTiming) has been added. This provides additional information - namely the mean and medium time spent in each script. This can be used to determine if the scripts are always performing poorly or if there are outliers. For example, an Engine script may be called 50 times, but one of those calls may take significantly more than the others (i.e. for the player loco vs AI locos).
• When enabled this will provide performance hints via logmate. Currently, this only has one warning - when a script tries to set a value to the same value it already has (e.g. via SetControlValue). In some situations, this Lua call can have a huge performance hit, because the text-based lookup can be very slow. In general, scripts should only set values that they know have changed. Note that GetControlValue has a similar performance penalty, so using that followed by a SetControlValue will have worse performance overall. Instead, scripts should track these values themselves using internal Lua variables wherever possible to minimise these calls. An example might be a loco script that sets headlights and rear lights every frame, rather than when the loco changes direction. With some scripts this filter can cause a huge amount of extra output to Logmate, so a new filter was added rather than using an existing one. Developers should be aware of this when using the "All" filter.
• Steam Workshop download loop now exits when all active downloads are completed.
• Change animation vector/array to use a case-insensitive key, rather than require many manual inefficient calls to "to lower".
• Increased hash table size for sound proxies to speed up searches.
• Cached mapping of names to controls to speed up sound control lookup.
• Added additional clipping for passenger fading.
• Added an early out for headlight flare rendering. Should have same behaviour.
• Reverted Dispatcher change that was intended to make node deletion on pathing failure more robust, but instead could make it more unstable.
• Fixed an STL assert failure in Debug build (this could also cause a crash in release builds) - tunnel iterators were being used after deletion when rendering 2D map.
• Removed assert in Landscape texture that causes a crash/break in Debug builds.
• Fix for crash in loading of Lingbao to Mianchi Scenario 3 (and other scenarios that include reversing sections). Caused by fix to prevent decrementing a stack pointer when at the beginning of the stack. Previous fix was to change loop check, new fix is a special flag to prevent and recover.
• Added command line option "-DisableSilverLining" to fully disable Silver Lining to aid debugging the graphics device lost crashes on alt-tab and screen sleep.
• Updated to Silver Lining 6.42 to fix D3D device lost error on screen sleep (and potentially others)

• Mitigation for serialisation crash during texture load. The most common crash in build v75.6a.x64
• Code to prevent crash from the dispatcher upon freeing up the same node twice on routing failure.

• Fix for crash in headlight destructor (5th most common crash in v75.8a.x64).

$470k video game revolutionising new america's cup as team australia reveals its squad.

Sailing as you know it is being changed by virtual sport — and Australia's top-performing athletes are benefiting from it.

As legendary yachtsman and skipper of Australia II in the victorious 1983 America's Cup, John Bertrand, revealed the 17-strong squad for the nation's entries in the 2024 America's Cup, he described the sport's "new world".

As one of the 12 national youth and women's teams to contest the America's Cup regattas in Barcelona next September and October, Australia has been utilising an AC40 foiling yacht simulator to prepare.

Described by Bertrand as "the most sophisticated software that the sailing industry has ever produced", the high-tech replica mimics the set-up of an AC40 with pre-start tactics and realistic effects of wind shifts, gusts and waves.

Developed by Team New Zealand over the past decade, the simulator aided the squad's selection process and will be used as an invaluable training tool in the lead-up to the famed competition.

The four-sailor simulator incorporates a pair of AC40 cockpits, helm wheels, control devices and instrumentation displays that precisely replicate the AC40 monohull foiling yachts that the teams will compete in.

"This is a new world that we have available for the first time," Bertrand said at the team's squad announcement on Wednesday.

"This is a new world of opportunity for us, in terms of not just practising but ... [virtually] racing against other nations in real-time."

Bertrand recounted a meeting with International Olympic Committee (ICO) president Thomas Bach in which the pair discussed the future of the Olympic Games .

"[Bach] said, 'Well, it's interesting. We've now moved into the suburbs via these new events called rock climbing and skateboarding. But for us to retain relevance in this new world, the Olympic movement needs to get into the loungerooms, we need to get into the houses via Esports'," Bertrand said.

"As a result, the IOC is now heavily looking into how the Olympic movement can utilise Esports with the Olympic programs of the future.

Bertrand emphasised that though events such as the Olympic Virtual Series, online regattas facilitating mass participation are key to moving with the times.

"Online is bigger than Hollywood — movies and television combined. Esports is bigger in terms of dollar value and dollar turnover.

"So, Esports is very much on their radar, and for $470,000 we're in this game now."

Just like a giant multiplayer video game, the simulator also allows the competing nations to race against each other in real-time.

"We're able to compete against these nations, between now and then, in the virtual world," Bertrand said.

"The bottom line is, part of our image going forward in my opinion, is this type of graphic.

"Because of the potential of what we're doing here, where we can change the sport via this sophisticated software.

"This software has been developed to such an extent that almost no on-water testing is required relevant to how accurate this type of replica is."

Over 130 applicants from 40 sailing clubs around the country took part in the selection process with 17 athletes chosen. Several athletes qualify for both the youth (18 to 25 years) and open women's campaigns creating a dynamic pool to pick the final teams from.

The squad features medal-winning Olympians, world-ranked sailors, multi-national and international champions in fleet and match racing and SailGP trailblazers.
