  • Travel Tips

If your loved one is new to flying, then here are a few helpful tips to ensure everything goes smoothly

  • This is especially true for flying out of a major city hub. If you’re flying out of a major city and flying internationally, then you may want to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours before the departure time.
  • If possible, consider bringing only a personal and a carryon for your trip and avoid checking a bag. This will save you money since most airlines charge you to check bags (some charge you for carryons as well). It will also save you time since you do not have to worry about dropping your luggage off at the gate.
  • Flights tend to dehydrate you, so do your best to hydrate well throughout the flight.
  • The mobile app allows an airline to send push notifications directly to your phone indicating you of any gate changes, delays, and more.
  • Checking into your flight online often saves you time and money. Then you can pull up your boarding pass directly on your phone without having to worry about losing your paper boarding pass ticket.
  • Some flights are hot and some are cold, I always bring an extra layer to keep me warm during a flight. If I get hot I can always take it off!

It sure was helpful when you said that you must do your best to do well throughout the flight since lights tend to dehydrate you. This is something that I will share with my parents since they mentioned that they are planning to rent a helicopter for a tour next week. They have been wanting to tour different places since last year, and they want to do their adventures before the year ends.

Origin and History

The precise origin of the phrase “safe and sound” remains elusive in historical records. However, the earliest known mention dates back to the 14th century. Geoffrey Chaucer used the term “hole and sound,” which carried a similar meaning to “safe and sound” in modern usage.

Following Chaucer, the phrase appeared in the 1570 work “The Schoolmaster,” and shortly after, it was used by William Shakespeare in Act 4, Line 4 of his play “The Comedy of Errors.”

Individually, the words “safe” and “sound” have extensive histories predating their literary references. The term “safe” was used around AD 1300 to denote being unharmed, particularly within Christian teachings. By the early 14th century, “safe” began to be used more broadly outside of religious contexts, with its meaning aligning with its contemporary definition of being free from danger.

In legal contexts, dating back to approximately 1402, “safe” was used to signify freedom from both mental and moral issues. In all usages, “safe” simply conveyed the absence of danger, defect, or harm in various aspects of life.

On the other hand, the term “sound” wasn’t defined as – without harm or injury until; the late 12th century. Over time, the word accrued additional meanings and applications.

“Sound” is derived from the Old English term “gesund,” which traces its roots to Old German and meant “healthy or strong.” In legal contexts, the phrase “sound mind and body” signified being “whole” or complete.

In the drafting of wills, the inclusion of “sound” indicated that the testator was of sound mind and not afflicted by any mental impairments. The term “sound” appears in various ancient languages, such as “gesund” in German, “sund” in Swedish, “soun” in Scottish, “gezond” in Dutch, and “suund” in Saterland Frisian.

Here’s What a Sound Journey Is — And Why You Need to Try One

A sound journey harnesses the soundscape to encourage a connection to intuition. here's how to practice this soothing ritual..

Sound baths, which use song bowls and gongs to create a relaxing hum of vibrations, have long been used to induce a meditative state. A sound journey, on the other hand, harnesses the soundscape to encourage a connection to intuition, says Aja Daashuur, founder of Spirit House Collective , a spiritual community focused on creating a safe space for BIPOC practitioners in Eagle Rock, California. It’s the difference between allowing sound to wash over you and actively participating in mindful visualization stimulated by that sound, she adds. “Sound journeys are meant to connect us to our ancestors and spirit guides, to activate subconscious messages so that we can receive them without judgment.”

While the journeys are typically guided, you can go it alone, Daashuur says. Here’s how to design your own.

One week before the sound journey

Consider what you’d like to call into your life. Whatever that is, create an hour-long playlist of relaxing tracks that you associate with it. (Perhaps what emerges is a call for abundance , so you might choose tracks that feature ocean waves or heavy rain, for instance.) This will be the backdrop for your journey.

Need inspiration? Follow YJ on Spotify!

Day of the sound journey

Gather items that make you feel special, such as scented candles, plush pillows, crystals energetically tied to your intention, a calming scent, or a beautiful notebook and pen. Use these to create a welcoming space for your journey to unfold.

Begin the journey

Get your playlist going and light your candle. Spritz your scent around the room or hold your crystals in silence. After a few moments, ground yourself with a simple visualization that connects you to the earth through the crown chakra. Start by imagining roots stretching from the base of your spine deep into the ground, reaching out and into Mother Earth’s energy and the unconditional love it offers.

Once rooted, settle into a comfortable, meditative pose, either seated or lying down. Allow your mind to wander, then consider the theme that emerged during your reflection the week before, and envision something that relates to it. In the abundance example, that might be a treasure chest. Explore that vision in your mind’s eye. What do you notice?

“Allow your journey to continue to unfold,” Daashuur says. “There’s no wrong way to do this. You’re activating a psychic muscle, and it grows stronger over time.” Get curious, making a mental note of whatever stands out without removing yourself from the moment. And then—explore. Take the whole hour in this mental playground, staying present in the visualization.

At the end of your playlist, flutter your eyes open and take a few minutes to sit with everything that came up, both during the journey and in the moments after, writing down stream-of-conscious thoughts in your notebook.
